East and West coast dairymen bring cows to Madison BY MISSY MUSSMAN Staff writer

For some dairymen, traveling to World Dairy Expo takes much longer than a few hours. Dale Bendig of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Ryan and Freynie Lancaster of Tillamook, Oregon, know all too well the amount of planning and the time it takes to make it to Expo. “It takes a lot to make sure things go smoothly,” Bendig said. Bendig has 20 head of cattle at Expo this year, 15 of which are milking cows. With 870 miles separating his farm and Madison, Wisconsin, the first thing Bendig ensures is that he has the registration papers and certificates of veterinary inspection for the cattle he is transporting. “You don’t want to travel that far and realize the cow can’t get off the trailer because you don’t have what you need,” Bendig said. After the paperwork, transportation for the cattle and supplies is the next step to organize. “We line up a truck to haul the cattle in and make sure we have enough supplies like

Once transportation lined up, Bendig services vehicles the week before 870-mile trip.

“I’ve broken down before and have bought tires in every state we travel through,” Bendig said. “Breakdowns take a lot of time and money and can be our biggest challenge.” In the days leading up to

How fitting helped Trent Styczynski get there BY RON JOHNSON Staff writer

Trent Styczynski began fitting cattle for people at his county fair when he was 12 years old. He had been doing so for free until someone approached him and told him he should be making some money. “I got approached by a guy who told me I should start charging, because I was losing him a lot of business. Some it all kind of took off from there,” Styczynski said. In 2010, the Dairy Cattle WORLD DAIRY EXPO PHOTO Exhibitor Committee made Trent Styczynski is shown after he won the World Dairy Expo the decision to separate the Youth Fitting Contest in 2010.

fitting component of the Youth Showmanship Contest into its own contest at World Dairy Expo. This created the perfect opportunity for Styczynski to show off the skills he had been honing by participating in that first World Dairy Expo Youth Fitting Contest with several others from across the United States. Earning first-place honors, Styczynski was surprised with how he placed but knew that he had done his best. “I was pretty confident in my work and thought I did a good job.” He remembers how the judge especially liked the way he blended the hair on his animal, so no lines were visible.
