Young bovine beauticians compete Lawton named overall youth fitting champion BY DANIELLE NAUMAN Staff Writer
MADISON, Wis. – The ever-growing and evolving World Dairy Expo Youth Fitting Contest took place Sun., Sept. 29 in the Sale Pavilion. For the first time, an Overall Fitter was named from the winners of each of the four age divisions. Adam Hunt of Kingston, Ont., had the pleasure of sorting through the young fitters, placing the contest. “The talent of the youth in the fitting contest was very impressive,” Hunt said. “The entrants were all very skilled and very professional. I was really impressed with the entire group.” When all the clippers were turned off, Ryan Lawton, 19, from Newark Valley, N.Y., was selected as the top senior male as well as the overall champion of the contest. This is the third year Lawton has participated

Anniversaries steeped in dairy Udder Tech Inc., Schwartz Manufacturing Co., share milestones at Madison BY MARIA BICHLER Staff Writer
World Dairy Expo serves as the place for dairy producers and enthusiasts alike to immerse themselves in the latest and greatest products to hit the marketplace. Expo, too, is a venue for tried and true companies to continue their pursuits and celebrate their history. At this year’s WDE, Udder Tech Inc. of Rosemount, Minn. will celebrate 25 years of business, as well as 25 years of exhibiting at Expo. The company will also use WDE as an avenue to launch a new product to their existing line of wearable products. Likewise, Schwartz Manufacturing Co. of Two Rivers, Wis. will celebrate 100 years of business and 53 years as a Trade Show exhibitor at Expo. To commemorate the milestones, the company will have a second booth at the show where promotions and giveaways will take place. Mohns sewn into Expo In 1994, Cheryl Mohn of Lakeville, Minn. transformed her talent for sewing into a full-fledged business. Now, Mohn serves as the president of
Udder Tech while her husband, Bruce, is the vice president. Their daughter, Dana Casto, has been employed full time since January 2015. “We have a great team here who helps to process the orders, and we do everything else in between,” Casto said. The company first operated out of a mobile home on the family’s dairy farm. From there, the company moved to the family’s home in 1996 and then to a shed building on the farm in 2005. As of early June, they moved operations to a commercial facility 20 miles from the Mohns’ farm. Udder Tech’s presence at WDE has also grown. In 1994, the first booth space the company exhibited at was in the outdoor tents, and a 10- by 10-foot booth they shared with someone else. In following years, they used an outdoor booth located along one of the barn walls before moving to the Arena Building where they are located today. This year, they will display their product line in a 10- by 50-foot booth. “We are excited to have more space for helping customers and, with celebrating our anniversary, to highlight

Casto said WDE is the largest trade show the business participates in throughout the year. And, in doing so, they use Expo as its main research and development opportunity while being face-to-face with its customers. “Most of our ideas (for new products) come from customer requests,” Casto said. “At Expo, people will stop by and say how much they like our stuff, but they will also say, ‘We like this, but if you could add a
pocket here or offer something for this problem, that would be appreciated.’ It is always fun to get new product ideas while visiting with customers.” In addition to the company’s vast product line, they are unveiling a new product – purple bibbed overalls. “Purple has been our most requested color in bibbed overalls,” Casto said. “We have Turn to ANNIVERSARIES | Page 4
