Unique design marries with WDE theme BY KATE RECHTZIGEL Staff writer
Every year since the late 1980s, Expo has presented themed awards to excellent showman and cattle. With the 2019 Expo theme being Tools for Dairy’s Progress, the awards have taken on a unique look. This year’s 310 Dairy Cattle Show trophies have been assembled with hardware of reclaimed and salvaged American-made farm, vehicle and factory parts. “We are really excited to be able to create these unique, oneof-a-kind trophies for farmers,” Marco Martinez said. “It’s rewarding to watch the older generation pick out the pieces we incorporated.” Martinez is the owner of Modern Metal Creations in Madison, Wis. He grew up working in his family’s restoration shop alongside his mom, Gina Serna, and stepdad, Miguel Serna, who started the business 30 years ago. For the last 15 years, the company has consisted of Martinez, the Sernas, Martinez’s fiancée, Dawn Ring, and neighbor, Russell Dennison. “It’s a relatively literal theme. WDE provides tools

In a room full of forage producers, not one raised their hand when speaker Kevin Jarek asked who had dealt with drought during the 2019 growing season. Instead, most nodded when the University of Wisconsin Extension agent summarized the year’s wet growing conditions that challenged the most experienced farmers, including the award winners who gathered for the World Forage Analysis Superbowl Awards Banquet. The banquet was to honor producers with high quality forages in categories ranging from silage to haylage to alfalfa and grass hay, and beyond. Jarek, from Outagamie County, summarized and cited several instances of small square bales of horse hay going for $975 per ton in Ohio. In a tongue-in-cheek suggestion on how to obtain any straw needed by farmers this year, he presented a 5-pound straw bale purchased at Walmart for $7.97. Turn to FORAGE | Page 4
