All sectors of the dairy industry gathered yesterday morning to voice their concerns and praises for the industry as United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue hosted a town hall meeting at World Dairy Expo. The event, which kicked off Perdue’s visit to Madison, Wis., shed light on many national and foreign policies weighing heavily on the minds of dairy farmers across the country. “We are truly interested in your prosperity and livelihood,” Perdue said. “Even as an advocate and representative for agriculture to our administration and Congress, I cannot do the job that you (farmers) can do. I want to exhort you all to make your voices heard.” Perdue was joined alongside Secretary-designee of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Brad Pfaff. the Chinese market, Perdue was optimistic about the opportunities available currently and in the future for American dairy exports. He spoke of marketplace access in Japan, but also other Asia territories in Turn to PURDUE | Page 4
A dairyman at heart Brache is International Person of the Year BY KATE RECHTZIGEL Staff writer
When Dr. Julio A. Brache Arzeno graduated high school, he had no idea his career path would lead him to raising dairy cattle, or even being a part of the dairy business. But at 92 years old, Brache can confidently say he was always meant to be a dairyman. Brache, president of the Rica Group, based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is the 2019 World Dairy Expo International Person of the Year. Tonight, Brache will be recognized for his contributions to the dairy industry at World Dairy Expo’s Dinner with the Stars in the Exhibition Hall. “It is quite a satisfaction that an international organization like World Dairy Expo recognizes me for my dedication to dairy cattle raising and milk production in the Dominican Republic and for the role Rica has played in that development,” Brache said. Brache’s time in dairy did not begin until the late 1950s, only after he pursued Turn to BRACHE | Page 3
