Parents: Bryan Voss and Rebecca Bovee Town: Worthington Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I am a senior at Worthington High School, and I play tennis, golf and am involved in the musical. My father works on a dairy farm and I am frequently out there doing whatever I can to help. Next year I will be Justyce Voss, 17 attending Minnesota West Dairy Star Sponsor: Community and Technical Prairie Livestock College in Worthington Supply looking to get some genWorthington, MN erals done before attend800-626-7768 ing a four-year college. I am currently undecided in what major to pursue. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? I believe I have a very friendly personality with very good communication skills, which helps me provide the right information to people. I am very eager to use my dairy princess status to get the messages across to a wide range of people. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me because I believe that a healthy diet begins with dairy, and I think that everybody else should know that, too. Not only is it important to our health, but it is also important to our economy. The dairy industry provides many jobs to people who, without it, would not be able to make a living. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? I would really like to promote the message that the cows on our farms are well taken care of. The cows on our farms are fed well, live in comfortable living spaces and our farmers do whatever they can to keep the cows healthy. To help make this message more effective, I would show pictures of the cows and the living conditions at the farm.

In the Select Sires fall, I will begin my col800-795-1233 lege journey with a major in agricultural education with an emphasis on leadership and communications at the University of Minnesota. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? I believe I am a great ambassador for the dairy industry because it is something I have a true passion for. There really isn’t anything I enjoy more than informing a consumer about life on the farm and why I love it so much. After being extremely involved in the industry my whole life, I think my knowledge, viewpoints and presence are all top qualities a dairy princess should possess. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? While exhibiting dairy cattle over the past few years, I have had many different questions come my way. I believe putting a face on the dairy industry is exactly what consumers need to feel a little bit closer to the farm. Even if it’s answering that no, brown cows don’t give chocolate milk, it’s the little things that count. It’s up to people, like myself, to inform the public about where their food comes from and why it’s important. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? Dairy farms feed millions everyday with their wholesome, nutritious, and good tasting products. Farmers promote milk as nature’s most perfect food, and we deliver. Milk, cheese and yogurt are packed with essential minerals and nutrients that everyone needs to lead a healthy lifestyle. Dairy foods are also quite tasty. No matter what product a consumer chooses, they can be assured that it will taste delicious and be nutritious.
they love. The number of dairy farmers is decreasing, so people need to realize how important they are. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? A dairy message that I would choose would be the importance of dairy consumption. I would do presentations for children on farm tours and serve milk and other dairy products at fairs, businesses in town and parades. To do this, I would need pamphlets, banners, and most importantly, the dairy products.
Olmsted County Parents: Kevin and Kathy Connelly Town: Rochester Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I will be graduating this spring from Hayeld High School. I plan on attending the University of Wisconsin-River Falls to pursue a degree in animal science and English. My family and I own and operate a 100-cow dairy farm Meghan just outside Byron, Minn. Connelly, 18 We farm a little over 700 acres of corn, beans and Dairy Star Sponsor: hay. Plainview Milk What qualities do Products you have that make you Plainview, MN a good dairy princess? I 507-534-3872 enjoy promoting the dairy industry, particularly with youth. People are becoming further and further removed from agriculture, and I absolutely love educating students in the classroom about the dairy industry. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? It’s important to me because it has made me the individual I am today, and I believe it is important to everyone because the dairy industry, and agriculture as a whole, feeds a nation. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The message I would deliver would be dairy farmer’s live on or near the land that we farm. We understand the importance of protecting natural resources because we breathe the air and drink the water just like everybody else in our community. I would deliver this message with the use of educational materials and a personal passion that every dairy farmer has in regards to their care for the environment.

Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? The dairy industry is important to me because I grew up on a dairy farm, and I consume dairy everyday. It should be important to everyone because if there were no dairy farmers, most people would lose the things

My fam- Pro-Ag Farmer’s Co-op ily milks around 40 HolUrbank, MN stein cows which are on 218-267-2401 rotational grazing during the summer. What qualities do you have that make you a good dairy princess? I am proud of the dairy industry, I care about people and I want to inform them of all the goodness of dairy. Why is the dairy industry important to you, and why should it be important to everybody? I love the dairy industry because of the dairy products that are very nutritious and taste great. Everyone should include these well-rounded products in their diet because they are wholesome and have multiple nutrients in one serving that many other foods combined would have to be eaten to replace them. If you could pick one dairy message, what would it be and how would you deliver it? The fact that milk and many dairy products contain nine essential nutrients is a very important message that many probably forget. Going into a school or classroom to do a presentation on calcium, riboavin, protein, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and niacin would be ideal. Similar to the demonstration of putting only the amount of sugar back into an empty drink bottle for a visual aid of how much sugar was originally in the drink, one probably could add different particles, symbolizing the different components of milk into an empty cup, for example water, protein, etc.
