NATION CHURCH MUST TAKE LEAD

THE Church provides a suitable platform for community awareness alongside the spiritual impartation on the Christian faith and other people.

Thus Zambians must fully utilise the body of Christ to disseminate information on the Covid-19 during the Sunday worship across denominations in the country.

Information emerging from many parts of the country indicates that compliance levels are not so impressive as some people are very casual about preventive measures.

In Nakonde, residents ran amok at the height of Covid-19 screening and testing when, in fact, the exercise is meant to protect them from contracting the highly-infectious disease.

A day later, police in Kapiri Mposhi rounded up 30 residents for moving about in the crowded Central Business Districts (CBD) without masks.

Elsewhere, some residents move aimlessly and interact in overcrowded public places without due regard for health guidelines aimed at containing the spread of the disease.

Some people even poke fun at obedient citizens who are always masked up, giving them unpalatable tags.

A worst scenario is told of a young boy who recently recovered from Covid-19 in a Lusaka township, being stigmatised by a horde of residents.

Some youths and older people are keeping away from him and each time he passes, whispers of scorn follow.

Fellow children have been detailed by the parents to keep away from him because he has just “graduated” from an isolation centre in the capital city.

There is brazen lack of understanding of Covid-19 among many citizens, who think social distancing and masking up are punishment, which they could not bear.

It is against such a backdrop that the sensitisation campaign must be escalated to the pulpit and must be given a specific slot during Sunday service in all churches across the country.

Church leaders and preachers in particular occupy a place of honour and authority on moral and spiritual values in society.

They are able to change the tide of all proceedings in communities.

Preachers live with the people in society where they command tremendous influence; they are held in high esteem.

Of course, some men and women of God have not been exemplary as they have been found wanting, but generally many of them are held in great honour in society.

Therefore, Church leaders must craft their Sunday programmes to allot a few minutes to a talk about Covid-19 from different angles.

The Church is an appropriate gathering in society which attracts sober attention and this gives it credence to host awareness programmes every Sunday.

In any case, the Church has always been involved in community programmes from time immemorial.

The Church mother bodies must also ensure that member congregations are fully engaged in the sensitisation initiatives to quash the ignorance embedded in a good number of citizens.

Government must also work with the three Church mother bodies and other umbrella religious organisations to ensure effective implementation of sensitisation programmes.

This casual approach must come to an end; why should people only oblige to follow simple instructions at gun-point?

Leaders from both sides of the political divide, Church leaders, non-governmental organisations, law enforcement officers and all public officers including the media must become ambassadors in the fight against Covid-19.

FOLLOWING the disruption of a radio programme, hosting the UPND president, Mr Hakainde Sammy Hichilema by suspected PF cadres in Isoka, Mr Hichilema has gone on rampage branding the ruling party as a terrorist organisation that is averse to freedom of the press and press freedom.

From the outset, let me make a few things clear:

However, it must be made clear here that Mr. Hichilema and the UPND have no moral right to cry to the high heavens, condemning others on violence against the media because they are serial offenders in as far as violence and brutality against the media and those who do not agree with them is concerned.

UPND is a violent party that needs to redeem itself from the stain and sin of violence by repenting and reforming. To prove my assertion, here are some of the violent trails of UPND: On May 4, 2005, the UPND held a press conference were they launched the infamous Mapatizya Formula, a violent and evil plan that involved the beating, maiming and killing of MMD supporters and leaders.

The UPND organised a ‘militia’ that attacked government vehicles, impounded food supply convoys and harassed government ministers and caused wanton mayhem against the MMD camp.

The Mapatizya Formulain that the UPND has continued to use to this day, involves the disregard of the law and the taking of the law in their own hands.

9. On October 17, 2018, Chilufya Tayali was again a victim of the UPND’s endemic violent culture when he was beaten by UPND cadres right at the court were he had gone to appear in a case in which Mr Hichilema had sued Mr Tayali for defamation.

10. On March 28, 2017, UPND cadres harassed and beat journalists Silumesi Malumo and Prisca Lumingu from Radio Phoenix and Millenium Radio at the UPND Secretariat in Rhodespark when they went to cover Mr. Hichilema’s press briefing.

11. On May 25, 2015, UPND officials harassed and verbally assaulted Rogers Kalero a Daily Nation reporter on the Copperbelt.

12. On May 24, 2006, a photojournalist from Times of Zambia, Richard Mulongo was harassed and chased from covering a UPND press briefing at their party secretariat.

13. On March 18, 2016, UPND cadres went to Sky FM Radio in Monze and brutally beat Fr Frank Bwalya who was featuring on a live radio programme.

I can go on and on citing evidence of UPND violence but for now this suffices.

ARREST all unscrupulous individuals using the Patriotic Front name to illegally grab land from rightful owners, Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo has directed.

And PF deputy secretary-general Mumbi Phiri has distanced the party from people who were committing crimes purporting to be its members.

Mr Kampyongo, who is also PF chairperson for security, said Government would not allow individuals to misuse the name of the party to break the law.

Mr Kampyongo warned that those who would break the law by engaging in illegal activities would face the wrath of the law. He said yesterday those grabbling land from rightful owners would not be spared.

“When you illegally grab land the police will not let you go scot-free but they will ensure that you are arrested and face the law. “We don’t want people to misuse the name of the party to break the law, I am saying this because I am a senior party member who oversees the security of the party, so being forewarned is better than to be allowed to into a danger zone,” Mr Kampyongo said.

Meanwhile Ms Phiri said the party had investigated the alleged illegality in Lusaka West and it was found that the people involved were not members. She said the people want to use the name of the party with impunity to engage in illegal activities and this would not be tolerated. Ms Phiri said it was prudent that the police move in and arrest all those involved in Lusaka West. She said “it is very shocking that people can go into someone’s land and start selling it, people doing this must be arrested,” she said.

THE obsession by the opposition of attacking President Edgar Lungu at every turn will not save them from a certain defect in 2021 because he has proved that he is a capable leader, Patriotic Front national chairperson Samuel Mukupa has said.

Mr Mukupa said while President Lungu was concentrating on developing Zambia, the opposition was focused on fabricating falsehoods and propaganda which he said people had seen through.

He said President Lungu presented the views and stance of the entire PF on issues of interest while some opposition leaders were yapping without consulting anyone.

He said he appreciated all the processes that Government was undertaking on Bill 10 and that the traditional leadership, especially in Barotseland, was above partisan politics but stood and supported the government of the day.

By SANDRA MACHIMA THE Constitutional Court was clear when it ruled on President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility and it is therefore mischievous for anyone, especially a religious man to state otherwise, says New Congress Party leader Peter Chanda.

Mr Chanda said President Lungu has not served two terms and therefore eligible to contest the 2021 elections.

He said it was contemptuous for Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu to start cautioning about President Edgar Lungu when the Constitutional Court’s ruling was clear.

Mr Chanda said President Lungu took office in 2015 to finish late President Michael Sata’s term and that because

towards the enactment of the Constitution that required the input of the people and submitted that the will of the people should prevail.

“We have had a lot of stories flying around and many statements but we want to rest our case in the will of the people to be put to fruition. We want to assure you the traditional leadership more especially in Barotseland is above partisan politics, we stand and support the government of the day.

He said the future of this country could only be assured if the traditional leadership took its rightful place to guide all those who had offered themselves to the political office and warned against those who were peddling partisan interest over Bill 10 as they risked the whole process being an academic exercise.

“Constitution-making in this country has been on going from independence and there have been processes that have gone on in this country which after spending so much money have just ended up being an academic exercise.

“President Edgar Lungu has done in the constitution-making process, something that is extra ordinary. It is something that did not happen in times past and it gives us an opportunity that if we are objective, and we put aside partisan politics on this issue, we can do for the Zambian people something that they have been yearning for so many years,” Mr. Nakacinda said.

Mr Chanda said Zambians must have confidence in the Judiciary as they dispense justice for everyone regardless of their political affiliation.

He said anyone undermining the judiciary was doing it at his or her own peril.

Chambishi Metals gets 30-day ultimatum

By ROGERS KALERO GOVERNMENT has given the owners of Chambishi Metals PLC 30 days to engage the investor Eurasian Resource Group (ERG) and give a clear report on the future of the company which has been put on care and maintenance.

Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu said Government had decided to give the management at Chambishi Metals 30 days in which to reach the investor and make a decision regarding the future of the company because it cannot be made to wait forever.

During a meeting with the management at Chambishi Metals on Thursday, Dr Ng’andu said his delegation had clearly stated that Government cannot be made to wait for an investor to take his time to make a decision on the matter.

“We had a meeting with the management at Chambishi Metals where the company has been put on care and maintenance. We wanted to find out how long this situation will take and if the investor is ready to invest more money in the operations.

“So during the meeting, we advised the management to meet the investor and come up with a clear position on the matter. We have given them 30 days in which to engage the investor Eurasian Resource Group (ERG) over its position regarding the future of the company which was put on care and maintenance in January,’’ Dr Ng’andu said And speaking in a separate interview, Chambishi Metals PLC, member of the board of directors William Nyirenda said the meeting with the delegation of ministers was a fruitful and was hoping that the various issues the company was facing would be addressed.

Mr Nyirenda said, once the various issues were addressed and the company resumed operations, the retrenched workers would be given priority for employment.

About 229 workers at Chambishi Metals were retrenched in January following the placement of the company on care and maintenance due to lack of copper concentrate stock feed.

HRC commends President Lungu for pardoning 2, 984 inmates PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has been commended by the Human Rights Commission (HRC) for pardoning 2, 984 inmates and granting of unconditional bail to 2, 719 remandees.

Human Rights Commission spokesperson, Mweelwa Muleya, has indicated that the pardoning of 2, 829 male and 155 female inmates on the eve of Africa Freedom Day is commendable as their right to liberty has been restored.

In a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday, Mr. Muleya noted that the combined 5, 703 number of inmates and remandees released yesterday is extremely significant because it will contribute to family and society stability. ”The granting of unconditional bail to 2, 719 remandees is commendable.

The HRC has always been advocating for granting of bail to suspects facing bail-able and misdemeanor offences as has been done by the President.

“It is hoped that a sustainable and predictable mechanism will be put in place to prescribe bail as a right to enhance the rights to

liberty and the presumption of innocence until proven or pleaded guilty,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Muleya observed that decongesting correctional facilities means reducing on the risk of contracting and spreading of Covid-19 in the facilities and is commendable as the country fights the pandemic.

He has also called on family members to the ex-inmates and society to welcome and embrace the pardoned inmates and help them integrate back into the community.

Mr. Muleya noted that released inmates are going to inevitably face serious emotional, psychological and socio-economic challenges during their family and community re-entry and they will need multi-sectorial and specialised counselling as well as support to help them cope with society’s realities.

President Lungu yesterday pardoned 2, 984 inmates ahead of the commemoration of the Africa Freedom Day which is celebrated every year on May 25.

By NATION REPORTER IT is hypocritical for UPND president, Hakainde Hichilema to accuse President Edgar Lungu of having failed Zambians while allegedly externalising millions of dollars to offshore accounts as revealed by paradise newspaper not long ago says a top Patriotic Front official.

PF Member of the Central Committee and Lusaka Province chairman Paul Moonga said it was unfortunate that most Zambians, especially the youth were poor today because of Mr Hichilema’s poor leadership rendered on the sale of public assets during the privatisation process.

He was reacting to Mr Hichilema’s accusations that President Lungu had failed the people of Zambia.

“It is hypocritical for Mr Hichilema to accuse President Lungu of having failed the people of Zambia while externalising millions of dollars to offshore accounts as revealed by the paradise papers not long ago,” said Mr Moonga.

Mr Moonga advised Mr Hichilema to shift and refocus his attention and energy on matters that advance national interest instead of trivialising serious national programmes.

He said in a statement that the UPND leader should not be accusing Government of impoverishing Zambians while allegedly externalising millions of dollars to offshore accounts as revealed by the paradise paper not long ago.

Mr Moonga said President Lungu and his administration were doing their part in uplifting the lives of Zambians and that the opposition parties must play their part too.

Ms Kapata said she has also invited the health personnel to test her whole family because as a public official, she was equally exposed.

Ms Siliya said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that despite taking every precaution to regularly sanitise, mask up and observe social distancing including a lockdown on her home, she had still tested positive to COVID-19.

“I regret to announce that I did test positive for the virus yesterday, Friday 22 May 2020. I immediately went into self-isolation pending advice from health professionals.

“Today I liaised with the Ministry of Health and submitted all my contacts in the last 10 days. Health professionals will be

contacting you soon,” she said.

The minister urged her contacts to remain calm and cooperate fully so they and their families could be kept safe and encouraged them not to hesitate to call 909 if they had any questions.

She said she was currently asymptomatic, meaning that she was not feeling ill nor was she showing any signs of the coronavirus despite being positive.

Adding: “As such, I ask all of you to even be more vigilant, in the prevention of the coronavirus. We must continue to wash hands and faces regularly, mask and social distance.

“It is also important that we remove our masks whether surgical or cloth, with care, to

avoid self-contamination,” she said. Ms Siliya has thanked President Edgar Lungu and Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya for support and health professionals for efforts in keeping citizens safe.

And Ms Kapata said the Information and Broadcasting minister has shown other leaders what to do to encourage the public not to fear testing.

“She has set a good example that even leaders can get covid and there is nothing to hide. Even me, I will test with my family and reveal the results,” Ms Kapata said.

Ms Kapata encouraged Ms Siliya to stay strong and maintain the courage that she had shown in making her status public, in fighting the covid.

Retrenched miners cautioned against careless spending

RETRENCHED miners should invest in shelter and income generating ventures so that they can live an acceptable life after leaving employment and not become destitute, Ministry of Labour Permanent Secretary Chanda Kaziya has said.

Mr Kaziya warned that irresponsible and careless spending would reduce them to beggars and they would end up blaming the government for their careless spending.

He cautioned retrenched miners at Chambishi Metals to put their retrenchment benefits to good use so that they do not throw themselves in hunger and poverty.

“That culture of shipwe shipwe or sekesha umupashi which implied spending money lavishly should not be entertained because it would leave you poverty-stricken and you will be blaming Government for your own mistakes.

“I am advising you to think of securing your own shelter and investing in income generating ventures. Remember rented houses do not give respect. Getting excited and booking taxis together with the driver will leave you in untold misery,’’ Mr Kaziya said.

Mr Kaziya also warned management at Chambishi Metals to ensure the retrenched workers were paid their terminal benefits according to the agreement.

He said Government would not take it kindly to hear that the management had decided to change its mind after agreeing with the unions on the package to be given to the retrenched miners.

“I am sure very soon, you will start paying the retrenched workers their terminal benefits. Make sure that you pay the retrenched workers according to the agreement. Don’t change your mind. No, we will not take it kindly.

“Don’t take their patience for granted.

and understanding from the time they were told about their situation,’’ Mr Kaziya said According to the total package, the retrenched workers would get four months’ pay for each year served, K45,000 for each affected as Ex-gratia payment and K6, 000 as repatriation package, one month salary in lieu of notice and then leave pay for those who have leave days On January 20, 2020, Mineworkers Union of Zambia president Joseph Chewe announced that 229 workers at Chambishi Metals have been left in the cold following the placement of the company on care and maintenance due to lack of Copper Concentrate The mining company was initially getting its Copper Concentrate stock feed from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but the situation has changed following the DRCs decision to construct smelters and add value to their concentrate.

DMMU hails production of face masks

By NOEL IYOMBWA THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) is impressed with the rate at which face masks are being produced at Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe.

DMMU national coordinator Chanda Kabwe said this when he toured the firm to check on the production of face masks for school-going children.

In a statement in issued by DMMU Senior Communications Officer Racheal Chama, Mr. Kabwe said there were presently 100 machines with a capacity to produce 1, 500 masks per day by women as a way of empowering them.

He said following the directive by President Edgar Lungu, the DMMU had engaged the Ministry of Defence, which is now managing Mulungushi Textiles, to produce the masks for school-going children in examination classes.

Mr Kabwe however noted that there was need to increase the human

resource to make full use of the available machinery and meet the target of 2.3 million face masks before schools reopened on June 1.

The total number of pupils in examination classes is 1. 3 million and the government is targeting to give at least two face masks to each pupil.

Mr. Kabwe also disclosed that Government has also engaged four market associations to produce face masks.

And Mulungushi textiles General Manager, Michael Phiri said they had the capacity to produce and would deliver the required masks before schools re-opened. In his fourth Covid-19 address to the nation, President Edgar Lungu directed the DMMU and the Ministry of Health to ensure all pupils in examination classes both primary and secondary were provided with face masks and other hygiene requirements as they re-opened schools to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

A 40-YEAR-OLD widower has asked the court to revoke his sister-in-law’s order of appointment as an administrator over his late wife’s estate.

Mr Chifwembe Ng’uni of Ndeke Township in Ndola wants the Kabushi Local Court to revoke Ms Hilda Mubanga’s order of appointment as an

administrator for his late wife’s estate. Mr Ng’uni narrated that his wife died in 2016 and the family agreed that her sister, Mubanga 56, should be appointed as an administrator.

Mr Ng’uni, a teacher by profession said from the time his wife died, Mubanga had not made any follow up in collecting benefits of his late wife as she also used to work in the Ministry of General Education.

By RABECCA BANDA A LUSAKA woman has told a magistrate’s court how the complainant in an assault case allegedly assaulted two of the accused persons in a fracas outside her neighbour’s house in Chilenje but when challenged in cross examination admitted she did not witness the start of the fight.

This is in a case where Izukanji Simbule, 24, a student, Cliff Simbule, 50, a businessman, Sylvia Simbule, 44, a secretary, Mapalo Simbule, 19, a student and Wiza Simbule, 21, a student allegedly assaulted Chrisantius Changwereza, 34, of Makeni thereby causing him occasioning actual bodily harm on December 24, 2019.

The defence witness, Ms Ronica Mwanza, 40, of Chilenje said she was at home in the evening when she heard noise outside.

Ms Mwanza said she went outside to check what was happening at her neighbour’s house - the Simbules - and saw a white car parked outside their gate.

There was an exchange of words with a man who later punched Izukanji in the face and when he wanted to hit him back, his father Cliff Simbule grabbed him and took him inside the house.

She said the man approached Sylvia Simbule and hit her with a silver rod he was holding in his hands.

Ms Mwanza said the man continued insulting and Mapalo

Mr Simbeye said he has forgiven the boy and asked for the matter to be withdrawn.

He said he has known the boy for a long time and he is like a son to him. He advised him to avoid wrong company.

Mr Simbeye said when the assault happened, the boy was with his friends. The juvenile said he was grateful to Mr Simbeye for forgiving him and asking the court to withdraw the matter.

Magistrate Kapulo told the boy to do something positive in life and leave his bad friends. She warned the boy not to repeat what he did because next time he will no longer be 18 and will be jailed.

The court reconciled the two.

NATION CHURCH MUST TAKE LEAD

THE Church provides a suitable platform for community awareness alongside the spiritual impartation on the Christian faith and other people.

Thus Zambians must fully utilise the body of Christ to disseminate information on the Covid-19 during the Sunday worship across denominations in the country.

Information emerging from many parts of the country indicates that compliance levels are not so impressive as some people are very casual about preventive measures.

In Nakonde, residents ran amok at the height of Covid-19 screening and testing when, in fact, the exercise is meant to protect them from contracting the highly-infectious disease.

A day later, police in Kapiri Mposhi rounded up 30 residents for moving about in the crowded Central Business Districts (CBD) without masks.

Elsewhere, some residents move aimlessly and interact in overcrowded public places without due regard for health guidelines aimed at containing the spread of the disease.

Some people even poke fun at obedient citizens who are always masked up, giving them unpalatable tags.

A worst scenario is told of a young boy who recently recovered from Covid-19 in a Lusaka township, being stigmatised by a horde of residents.

Some youths and older people are keeping away from him and each time he passes, whispers of scorn follow.

Fellow children have been detailed by the parents to keep away from him because he has just “graduated” from an isolation centre in the capital city.

There is brazen lack of understanding of Covid-19 among many citizens, who think social distancing and masking up are punishment, which they could not bear.

It is against such a backdrop that the sensitisation campaign must be escalated to the pulpit and must be given a specific slot during Sunday service in all churches across the country.

Church leaders and preachers in particular occupy a place of honour and authority on moral and spiritual values in society.

They are able to change the tide of all proceedings in communities.

Preachers live with the people in society where they command tremendous influence; they are held in high esteem.

Of course, some men and women of God have not been exemplary as they have been found wanting, but generally many of them are held in great honour in society.

Therefore, Church leaders must craft their Sunday programmes to allot a few minutes to a talk about Covid-19 from different angles.

The Church is an appropriate gathering in society which attracts sober attention and this gives it credence to host awareness programmes every Sunday.

In any case, the Church has always been involved in community programmes from time immemorial.

The Church mother bodies must also ensure that member congregations are fully engaged in the sensitisation initiatives to quash the ignorance embedded in a good number of citizens.

Government must also work with the three Church mother bodies and other umbrella religious organisations to ensure effective implementation of sensitisation programmes.

This casual approach must come to an end; why should people only oblige to follow simple instructions at gun-point?

Leaders from both sides of the political divide, Church leaders, non-governmental organisations, law enforcement officers and all public officers including the media must become ambassadors in the fight against Covid-19.

UPND AND VIOLENCE

FOLLOWING the disruption of a radio programme, hosting the UPND president, Mr Hakainde Sammy Hichilema by suspected PF cadres in Isoka, Mr Hichilema has gone on rampage branding the ruling party as a terrorist organisation that is averse to freedom of the press and press freedom.

From the outset, let me make a few things clear: 1. What happened in Isoka is wrong and must be condemned by all Zambians.

2. Government and the Patriotic Front through Information Minister Dora Siliya and Deputy Secretary-General Mumbi Phiri respectively have unequivocally condemned that unfortunate incident.

However, it must be made clear here that Mr. Hichilema and the UPND have no moral right to cry to the high heavens, condemning others on violence against the media because they are serial offenders in as far as violence and brutality against the media and those who do not agree with them is concerned.

UPND is a violent party that needs to redeem itself from the stain and sin of violence by repenting and reforming. To prove my assertion, here are some of the violent trails of UPND: On May 4, 2005, the UPND held a press conference were they launched the infamous Mapatizya Formula, a violent and evil plan that involved the beating, maiming and killing of MMD supporters and leaders.

The UPND organised a ‘militia’ that attacked government vehicles, impounded food supply convoys and harassed government ministers and caused wanton mayhem against the MMD camp.

The Mapatizya Formulain that the UPND has continued to use to this day, involves the disregard of the law and the taking of the law in their own hands.

It also encourages the use of violence and civil disobedience against their

opponents.

3. On February 6, 2017, Brian Hapunda was brutally beaten by UPND cadres in Nega Nega for merely belonging to PF. 4. On May 24, 2006, Vernon Mwaanga and his driver were beaten and assaulted by UPND cadres when they went to deliver a message of condolences at the funeral of the late Anderson Mazoka.

5. In 2016, in Namwala, PF members were mercilessly attacked by UPND cadres for merely celebrating President Edgar Lungu’s electoral victory.

6. On December 5, 2019 UPND cadres opened fire and shot six PF cadres in Mpulungu.

7. In 2016, UPND cadres assaulted and crippled Charity Kabongomana, the then FDD parliamentary candidate for Namwala Constituency.

8. On 27 July, 2015 UPND cadres went to Cresta Golfview Hotel and brutally assaulted Chilufya Tayali who was having a press briefing there.

9. On October 17, 2018, Chilufya Tayali was again a victim of the UPND’s endemic violent culture when he was beaten by UPND cadres right at the court were he had gone to appear in a case in which Mr Hichilema had sued Mr Tayali for defamation.

10. On March 28, 2017, UPND cadres harassed and beat journalists Silumesi Malumo and Prisca Lumingu from Radio Phoenix and Millenium Radio at the UPND Secretariat in Rhodespark when they went to cover Mr. Hichilema’s press briefing.

11. On May 25, 2015, UPND officials harassed and verbally assaulted Rogers Kalero a Daily Nation reporter on the Copperbelt.

12. On May 24, 2006, a photojournalist from Times of Zambia, Richard Mulongo was harassed and chased from covering a UPND press briefing at their party secretariat.

13. On March 18, 2016, UPND cadres went to Sky FM Radio in Monze and brutally beat Fr Frank Bwalya who was featuring on a live radio programme.

I can go on and on citing evidence of UPND violence but for now this suffices.

ARREST all unscrupulous individuals using the Patriotic Front name to illegally grab land from rightful owners, Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo has directed.

And PF deputy secretary-general Mumbi Phiri has distanced the party from people who were committing crimes purporting to be its members.

Mr Kampyongo, who is also PF chairperson for security, said Government would not allow individuals to misuse the name of the party to break the law.

Mr Kampyongo warned that those who would break the law by engaging in illegal activities would face the wrath of the law. He said yesterday those grabbling land from rightful owners would not be spared.

“When you illegally grab land the police will not let you go scot-free but they will ensure that you are arrested and face the law. “We don’t want people to misuse the name of the party to break the law, I am saying this because I am a senior party member who oversees the security of the party, so being forewarned is better than to be allowed to into a danger zone,” Mr Kampyongo said.

Meanwhile Ms Phiri said the party had investigated the alleged illegality in Lusaka West and it was found that the people involved were not members. She said the people want to use the name of the party with impunity to engage in illegal activities and this would not be tolerated. Ms Phiri said it was prudent that the police move in and arrest all those involved in Lusaka West. She said “it is very shocking that people can go into someone’s land and start selling it, people doing this must be arrested,” she said.

THE obsession by the opposition of attacking President Edgar Lungu at every turn will not save them from a certain defect in 2021 because he has proved that he is a capable leader, Patriotic Front national chairperson Samuel Mukupa has said.

Mr Mukupa said while President Lungu was concentrating on developing Zambia, the opposition was focused on fabricating falsehoods and propaganda which he said people had seen through.

He said President Lungu presented the views and stance of the entire PF on issues of interest while some opposition leaders were yapping without consulting anyone.

By SANDRA MACHIMA THE Constitutional Court was clear when it ruled on President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility and it is therefore mischievous for anyone, especially a religious man to state otherwise, says New Congress Party leader Peter Chanda.

Mr Chanda said President Lungu has not served two terms and therefore eligible to contest the 2021 elections.

He said it was contemptuous for Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu to start cautioning about President Edgar Lungu when the Constitutional Court’s ruling was clear.

Mr Chanda said President Lungu took office in 2015 to finish late President Michael Sata’s term and that because

towards the enactment of the Constitution that required the input of the people and submitted that the will of the people should prevail.

“We have had a lot of stories flying around and many statements but we want to rest our case in the will of the people to be put to fruition. We want to assure you the traditional leadership more especially in Barotseland is above partisan politics, we stand and support the government of the day.

And Mr. Nakacinda said he was not in the province to arm-twist the traditional leadership over Bill 10 but to seek wisdom and guidance which was devoid of petty political inclinations meant to achieve political expedience.

He said the future of this country could only be assured if the traditional leadership took its rightful place to guide all those who had offered themselves to the political office and warned against those who were peddling partisan interest over Bill 10 as they risked the whole process being an academic exercise.

“Constitution-making in this country has been on going from independence and there have been processes that have gone on in this country which after spending so much money have just ended up being an academic exercise.

“President Edgar Lungu has done in the constitution-making process, something that is extra ordinary. It is something that did not happen in times past and it gives us an opportunity that if we are objective, and we put aside partisan politics on this issue, we can do for the Zambian people something that they have been yearning for so many years,” Mr. Nakacinda said.

He said the court in its Judgement was clear that the Presidential tenure from January 25, 2015 to September 13, 2016 did not constitute a full term of office.

Mr Chanda said Zambians must have confidence in the Judiciary as they dispense justice for everyone regardless of their political affiliation.

He said anyone undermining the judiciary was doing it at his or her own peril.

Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu said Government had decided to give the management at Chambishi Metals 30 days in which to reach the investor and make a decision regarding the future of the company because it cannot be made to wait forever.

During a meeting with the management at Chambishi Metals on Thursday, Dr Ng’andu said his delegation had clearly stated that Government cannot be made to wait for an investor to take his time to make a decision on the matter.

“We had a meeting with the management at Chambishi Metals where the company has been put on care and maintenance. We wanted to find out how long this situation will take and if the investor is ready to invest more money in the operations.

“So during the meeting, we advised the management to meet the investor and come up with a clear position on the matter. We have given them 30 days in which to engage the investor Eurasian Resource Group (ERG) over its position regarding the future of the company which was put on care and maintenance in January,’’ Dr Ng’andu said And speaking in a separate interview, Chambishi Metals PLC, member of the board of directors William Nyirenda said the meeting with the delegation of ministers was a fruitful and was hoping that the various issues the company was facing would be addressed.

Mr Nyirenda said, once the various issues were addressed and the company resumed operations, the retrenched workers would be given priority for employment.

About 229 workers at Chambishi Metals were retrenched in January following the placement of the company on care and maintenance due to lack of copper concentrate stock feed.

HRC commends President Lungu for pardoning 2, 984 inmates PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has been commended by the Human Rights Commission (HRC) for pardoning 2, 984 inmates and granting of unconditional bail to 2, 719 remandees.

Human Rights Commission spokesperson, Mweelwa Muleya, has indicated that the pardoning of 2, 829 male and 155 female inmates on the eve of Africa Freedom Day is commendable as their right to liberty has been restored.

In a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday, Mr. Muleya noted that the combined 5, 703 number of inmates and remandees released yesterday is extremely significant because it will contribute to family and society stability. ”The granting of unconditional bail to 2, 719 remandees is commendable.

The HRC has always been advocating for granting of bail to suspects facing bail-able and misdemeanor offences as has been done by the President.

“It is hoped that a sustainable and predictable mechanism will be put in place to prescribe bail as a right to enhance the rights to

liberty and the presumption of innocence until proven or pleaded guilty,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Muleya observed that decongesting correctional facilities means reducing on the risk of contracting and spreading of Covid-19 in the facilities and is commendable as the country fights the pandemic.

He has also called on family members to the ex-inmates and society to welcome and embrace the pardoned inmates and help them integrate back into the community.

Mr. Muleya noted that released inmates are going to inevitably face serious emotional, psychological and socio-economic challenges during their family and community re-entry and they will need multi-sectorial and specialised counselling as well as support to help them cope with society’s realities.

President Lungu yesterday pardoned 2, 984 inmates ahead of the commemoration of the Africa Freedom Day which is celebrated every year on May 25.

HH must explain paradise papers expose

By NATION REPORTER IT is hypocritical for UPND president, Hakainde Hichilema to accuse President Edgar Lungu of having failed Zambians while allegedly externalising millions of dollars to offshore accounts as revealed by paradise newspaper not long ago says a top Patriotic Front official.

PF Member of the Central Committee and Lusaka Province chairman Paul Moonga said it was unfortunate that most Zambians, especially the youth were poor today because of Mr Hichilema’s poor leadership rendered on the sale of public assets during the privatisation process.

He was reacting to Mr Hichilema’s accusations that President Lungu had failed the people of Zambia.

“It is hypocritical for Mr Hichilema to accuse President Lungu of having failed the people of Zambia while externalising millions of dollars to offshore accounts as revealed by the paradise papers not long ago,” said Mr Moonga.

Mr Moonga advised Mr Hichilema to shift and refocus his attention and energy on matters that advance national interest instead of trivialising serious national programmes.

He said in a statement that the UPND leader should not be accusing Government of impoverishing Zambians while allegedly externalising millions of dollars to offshore accounts as revealed by the paradise paper not long ago.

Mr Moonga said President Lungu and his administration were doing their part in uplifting the lives of Zambians and that the opposition parties must play their part too.

The Sunday Nation has also learnt that one district commissioner has also tested positive and is isolation.

And Lands and Natural Resources minister, Jean Kapata has hailed Ms Siliya for coming out open about her covid status, saying this will encourage other leaders and ordinary people to go for testing.

Ms Kapata said she has also invited the health personnel to test her whole family because as a public official, she was equally exposed.

Ms Siliya who noted that she had actively been involved, together with other ministers,

The minister urged her contacts to remain calm and cooperate fully so they and their families could be kept safe and encouraged them not to hesitate to call 909 if they had any questions.

She said she was currently asymptomatic, meaning that she was not feeling ill nor was she showing any signs of the coronavirus despite being positive.

Adding: “As such, I ask all of you to even be more vigilant, in the prevention of the coronavirus. We must continue to wash hands and faces regularly, mask and social distance.

“It is also important that we remove our masks whether surgical or cloth, with care, to

avoid self-contamination,” she said. Ms Siliya has thanked President Edgar Lungu and Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya for support and health professionals for efforts in keeping citizens safe.

And Ms Kapata said the Information and Broadcasting minister has shown other leaders what to do to encourage the public not to fear testing.

“She has set a good example that even leaders can get covid and there is nothing to hide. Even me, I will test with my family and reveal the results,” Ms Kapata said.

Ms Kapata encouraged Ms Siliya to stay strong and maintain the courage that she had shown in making her status public, in fighting the covid.

Retrenched miners cautioned against careless spending

RETRENCHED miners should invest in shelter and income generating ventures so that they can live an acceptable life after leaving employment and not become destitute, Ministry of Labour Permanent Secretary Chanda Kaziya has said.

Mr Kaziya warned that irresponsible and careless spending would reduce them to beggars and they would end up blaming the government for their careless spending.

He cautioned retrenched miners at Chambishi Metals to put their retrenchment benefits to good use so that they do not throw themselves in hunger and poverty.

“That culture of shipwe shipwe or sekesha umupashi which implied spending money lavishly should not be entertained because it would leave you poverty-stricken and you will be blaming Government for your own mistakes.

“I am advising you to think of securing your own shelter and investing in income generating ventures. Remember rented houses do not give respect. Getting excited and booking taxis together with the driver will leave you in untold misery,’’ Mr Kaziya said.

Mr Kaziya also warned management at Chambishi Metals to ensure the retrenched workers were paid their terminal benefits according to the agreement.

He said Government would not take it kindly to hear that the management had decided to change its mind after agreeing with the unions on the package to be given to the retrenched miners.

“I am sure very soon, you will start paying the retrenched workers their terminal benefits. Make sure that you pay the retrenched workers according to the agreement. Don’t change your mind. No, we will not take it kindly.

“Don’t take their patience for granted.

DMMU hails production of face masks

By NOEL IYOMBWA THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) is impressed with the rate at which face masks are being produced at Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe.

DMMU national coordinator Chanda Kabwe said this when he toured the firm to check on the production of face masks for school-going children.

In a statement in issued by DMMU Senior Communications Officer Racheal Chama, Mr. Kabwe said there were presently 100 machines with a capacity to produce 1, 500 masks per day by women as a way of empowering them.

He said following the directive by President Edgar Lungu, the DMMU had engaged the Ministry of Defence, which is now managing Mulungushi Textiles, to produce the masks for school-going children in examination classes.

Mr Kabwe however noted that there was need to increase the human

resource to make full use of the available machinery and meet the target of 2.3 million face masks before schools reopened on June 1.

The total number of pupils in examination classes is 1. 3 million and the government is targeting to give at least two face masks to each pupil.

Mr. Kabwe also disclosed that Government has also engaged four market associations to produce face masks.

And Mulungushi textiles General Manager, Michael Phiri said they had the capacity to produce and would deliver the required masks before schools re-opened. In his fourth Covid-19 address to the nation, President Edgar Lungu directed the DMMU and the Ministry of Health to ensure all pupils in examination classes both primary and secondary were provided with face masks and other hygiene requirements as they re-opened schools to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

A 40-YEAR-OLD widower has asked the court to revoke his sister-in-law’s order of appointment as an administrator over his late wife’s estate.

Mr Chifwembe Ng’uni of Ndeke Township in Ndola wants the Kabushi Local Court to revoke Ms Hilda Mubanga’s order of appointment as an

administrator for his late wife’s estate. Mr Ng’uni narrated that his wife died in 2016 and the family agreed that her sister, Mubanga 56, should be appointed as an administrator.

Mr Ng’uni, a teacher by profession said from the time his wife died, Mubanga had not made any follow up in collecting benefits of his late wife as she also used to work in the Ministry of General Education.

By RABECCA BANDA A LUSAKA woman has told a magistrate’s court how the complainant in an assault case allegedly assaulted two of the accused persons in a fracas outside her neighbour’s house in Chilenje but when challenged in cross examination admitted she did not witness the start of the fight.

This is in a case where Izukanji Simbule, 24, a student, Cliff Simbule, 50, a businessman, Sylvia Simbule, 44, a secretary, Mapalo Simbule, 19, a student and Wiza Simbule, 21, a student allegedly assaulted Chrisantius Changwereza, 34, of Makeni thereby causing him occasioning actual bodily harm on December 24, 2019.

The defence witness, Ms Ronica Mwanza, 40, of Chilenje said she was at home in the evening when she heard noise outside.

Ms Mwanza said she went outside to check what was happening at her neighbour’s house - the Simbules - and saw a white car parked outside their gate.

There was an exchange of words with a man who later punched Izukanji in the face and when he wanted to hit him back, his father Cliff Simbule grabbed him and took him inside the house.

She said the man approached Sylvia Simbule and hit her with a silver rod he was holding in his hands.

Ms Mwanza said the man continued insulting and Mapalo

Ms Mwanza said a few minutes later, the man drove off.

He said he has known the boy for a long time and he is like a son to him. He advised him to avoid wrong company.

Mr Simbeye said when the assault happened, the boy was with his friends. The juvenile said he was grateful to Mr Simbeye for forgiving him and asking the court to withdraw the matter.

Magistrate Kapulo told the boy to do something positive in life and leave his bad friends. She warned the boy not to repeat what he did because next time he will no longer be 18 and will be jailed.

The court reconciled the two.

As the Nation is aware, Zambia will join the rest of Africa to commemorate Africa Freedom Day which falls on Monday, 25th May, 2020 under the theme “Silencing the Guns: Creating Conditions for Africa’s Development”.

His Excellency Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia, will lead the celebrations at the national level here in Lusaka. This will be marked by a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Freedom Statue and later the presentation of Honours and Awards to the deserving recipients at State House.

At the provincial level, the commemorations will be led by the Honourable Provincial Ministers who will lay wreaths at the designated sites.

Government, however, wishes to inform the members of the public that in view of the outbreak of the CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC and in order to observe the public health guidelines on preventing the spread of the virus, attendance to the 2020 Africa Freedom Day commemorations has been restricted at both the national and provincial levels. To this effect, members of the public are advised to stay away from the proceedings in line with the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings.

At the Wreath Laying Ceremony in Lusaka, His Excellency the President will be accompanied by the Secretary General of the Patriotic Front Party, the Honourable Ministers of Defence, Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Lusaka Province. Others will be the Ser-

vice Chiefs, the Mayor of the City of Lusaka, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and a few selected Senior Government Officials.

Further, the commemorations at State House have been scaled down from the 350 guests invited last year in 2019 to only 40 this year.

The focus of the celebrations this year will be the Investiture ceremony where only a few deserving Zambians will be bestowed with medals by His Excellency the President, as per tradition.

As we commemorate this important day on the African calendar, let us not lose sight of the guidelines that have been issued by the Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of the CORONAVIRUS. The code of conduct, published on Thursday, details how SANDF members are expected to behave in various scenarios during Operation Notlela, including during incidents of looting, drinking on private property, at roadblocks and other interactions with the public.

The mission-specific code of conduct comes after the suspension and investigation of soldiers present during the death of Collins Khosa, 40, who was allegedly beaten to death by members of the SANDF in Alexandra, Johannesburg, in March.

Lawyers on behalf of the family argued the ministers of police and defence had failed to take steps to prevent illegal action by law enforcement officials, adding their public statement had defended, downplayed and encouraged the use of force.

The code of conduct, shared on SANDF social media sites in the format of “dos and “don’ts.” details how soldiers will be expected to disperse crowds during looting - they should not fire warning shoots, shoot civilians or become involved in a physical fight.

In the scenario where a person is drinking in their yard, SANDF members should ignore the situation and not enter the premises.

Although soldiers have the right to self-defence, they have been instructed to ignore provocation, disrespect and insults. They should exercise restraint and issue a verbal warning, rather than shooting or engaging in a physical fight.

ISLAMABAD - All but two of the 99 people on board a Pakistan passenger plane were killed when it crashed into a residential neighbourhood of Karachi, officials said yesterday, as rescue workers toiled through the charred and twisted wreckage strewn across the street.

The bodies of all the passengers and crew on the Pakistan International Airlines had been recovered, the Sindh Health Ministry said, adding that 19 had been identified. – AFP.

Luvo Manyonga: Former long jump world champion fined for public drinking SOUTH Africa’s star long jumper Luvo Manyonga, who famously overcame a crystal meth addiction to win gold at the 2017 World Championships and silver at the 2016 Olympics, is in trouble with the law again.

The 29-year-old, who was banned from athletics for 18 months after testing positive for the drug in 2012, has been fined for public drinking and contravening South Africa’s strict lockdown restrictions.

According to the police notice, Manyonga was caught on Wednesday at Thubelitsha Park in Kayamandi‚ a township on the outskirts of the famous Western Cape winelands town of Stellenbosch.

He was charged in terms of the Disaster Management Act and the offence was listed as “failure to confine himself in his place of residence and public drinking.”

His residence was listed as Bluewater Bay in Port Elizabeth‚ although it is understood that he has been staying with family at Mbekweni in nearby Paarl since before the nationwide lockdown started on March 26.

The Disaster Management Act forbids the sale of alcohol and requires people to remain indoors unless they provide an essential service or are out shopping for groceries or items specifically listed by government.– BBC.

ORMER World 400m hurdles champion Samuel Matete says the standards of athletics in Zambia was still below par as development is restricted to the line of rail.

Matete said it was unfortunate that over 20 years ago since he left athletics, Zambia can only boast of Sydney Siame scoring success when there was enormous talent across the 10 provinces of the country.

Man dresses up in ridiculous costumes to embarrass his wife on Zoom calls’ CARA Fields, from Indiana, shared hilarious images of her husband Matt as he dressed up as a cowboy and Batman to embarrass her on her Zoom conference calls.

If you haven’t worked from home before lockdown, you may be finding the transition pretty challenging.

Like many others, Cara Fields and her husband Matt from Indiana have been adapting to their new work-life balance home-schooling their children and staying on top of their 9 to 5 jobs.

But, Cara explained to Bored Panda that in order to give her - and her colleagues - a much needed laugh in these tough times, Matt started appearing in her Zoom conference calls dressed up in silly costumes.

She says he’s always loved embarrassing her in public, so this was the obvious next step.

She said: “When I converted our dining room into an office where my camera faced the dining room table, he saw a virtual opportunity to embarrass me during the pandemic.”

At first, Cara’s husband’s started accessorising with items from his wardrobe.

A cowboy hat here, hunting gear and Hawaiian shirts there - pretty subtle overall.

But it wasn’t long before things started to escalate.

She explained that their friends started sending him extravagant Halloween outfits in the post to keep up appearances - and they didn’t disappoint.

One day he wore a Batman outfit and the next he was Where’s Wally.

Cara started posting pictures of his outfits on LinkedIn and everyone thought it was hilarious. One person said: “This is the best” and then suggested they “dress up as one another and change seats.”

MISSING WATER BUCKET TRIGGERS WITCHCRAFT FEARS H

EARING about witchcraft is one thing but to hear about the possibility of being bewitched is a death scare that has never settled well with anyone.

Cowdray Park residents were left in awe and gripped with fear on Sunday evening after one of the residents commonly known as Mai Tracey stirred them with ‘witchcraft’ threats.

She was accusing them

of stealing her 20-litre water filled bucket alongside two bucket lids at their communal tap last week.

A source who was present at the scene, narrated the events that led to the outburst, saying people were queuing for water at the tap and the water pressure was getting low, causing chaos and disorder among people.

Those who were panicking scrambled to get their containers to the front while the impatient got

violent and removed people’s containers from the tap when they were not yet full, putting theirs.

Mai Tracey who allegedly felt challenged by what was happening reportedly took her containers to the front where she also tried to get water by removing other containers.

When people tried to reprimand her, she allegedly retaliated by shooting heavy words alongside witchcraft scares, causing them to “behave” instant-

ly.

While crossing her fingers she allegedly told people that she didn’t fear anyone and that: “akatora bucket rangu remvura nezvivharo zvacho achandiwona. Achanwa mvura yacho ichipupuma mu-bucket racho isingaperi. Muchandiziva! (Whoever stole my bucket will always have that bucket overflowing with water all the time. You will know me.)”.

Man stashes mbanje in underwear IN A DRAMATIC incident an accused person who has been on the run gave police a torrid time as he bolted out of his car with dagga stuffed in his underwear and took to his heels.

A source close to investigations said the suspect Arnold Chikunguru (34) had been on the run since last year as he was wanted for a crime of unlawful entry and theft from a house in Cowdray Park suburb.

Detectives, the source said, received a tip-off that the accused was selling dagga at his house, they pounced at his house last week on Thursday.

“Upon spotting police he bolted out of the house and showed a clean pair of heels, police gave chase and caught up with him while he was trying to scale over a wall at a neighbour’s house,” said the source.

The source said they searched him all over the body and found three twists of mbanje stuffed in

MATERO born and bred Hip Hop artiste Jay Dee Jonez has a new single titled ‘Made In Matero’.

The single which has so far received a fair share of air play on some local radio stations talks about the life and living in the land of the brave, Matero.

Born Darlington David Mukupa on 16th January, 1992 from Isaac Mwaba Mukupa and Eveness Shakwelele Mukupa, the young rapper so far has done eight songs which will be part of the album he is currently working on.

Songs like ‘Kaizer Zulu’ and ‘City Life’ are some of the songs that are also receiving good radio play on some local radio stations.

Located in the valley of the Zambezi Escarpment and sharing boundaries with Siavonga, Monze, Pemba, Sinazongwe and Zimbabwe on the Lake Kariba, the district has only one Constituency, 14 wards with two Chiefdoms under Chief Chipepo and Chief Munyumbwe.

A recent tour of Gwembe Constituency supported by the Zambia Women Parliamentary Caucus (ZPWC) in collaboration with Hivos, aimed at highlighting and profiling projects implemented by female parliamentarians in the country, revealed that Gwembe is in dire need of proper road infrastructure, good bridges, dams, improved health facilities and staff accommodation for government departments. During the tour, UPND area Member of Parliament Hon. Attractor Malungo Chisangano admitted that Gwembe is faced with a number of challenges.

However, she is proud of her mission to transform the constituency.

Being the first-ever female MP in Gwembe, she has undertaken a number of projects in the area and scored some successes enough to change the narrative. From the tour, it is seen that she has adopted a dedicated approach to implement projects in key areas of health, infrastructure, women empowerment, sanitation, education and others.

Under education, her main concern has been constructing classroom blocks, houses for teachers and improving infrastructure of the existing schools.

“Education is the key to development and a rural constituency like this one is faced with a lot of challenges.

EWELANJI Sanga alias Lanji is a Zambian singer, rapper and songwriter born on December 18.

Her musical journey started in October, 2013 when she first visited a recording studio and has been recording music since then.

She was raised in a Reggae-loving home and her father was so much into it but she doesn’t let that limit her sound.

She describes herself as a multi-genre artiste.

Lanji gets inspiration from people’s experiences, songs and artistes like Chronixx, Beyoncé, Bob Marley, T-Sean, Naomi Wachira and Oliver Mtukudzi to mention just but a few.

She dropped her first-ever professional single under YM Media, her label, in late 2019.

The song was called ‘Set DTone’ produced by DJ Dro. This song received positive feedback peaking at number 8 on the Joy FM top 20 and was picked as a ‘Power Promo Zone’ song on Power FM. Lanji is surely a rising

star looking to take over the world with her unique and catchy sound. One of her career goals is to communicate to someone about the power of love, self-confidence and belief in oneself to make their dreams become a reality.

Tracking HON. CHISANGANO’s mission to transform Gwembe

Most of the schools that are found in this district are very old, some of them, my father used them, they were built in the 50s, they are very old and dilapidated,” she says to emphasise the reason she has put up classroom blocks in different places with Kkoma Ward where she built a one by three classroom block, serving as a classical example.

In this ward, the project was motivated by the fact that the original school structures were dilapidated and made learning difficult. Additionally, population for learners had increased and more space was needed.

Another school, Machechete Primary was built using Community Development Funds (CDF). Hon. Chisangano laments how she was bothered by children walking distances as long as ten kilometers to access education. Building Machechete Primary eased the burden and the community is happy especially that initially there was just a grass-thatched shelter serving as a school.

In many other wards, Hon. Chisangano worked with councillors to build more classroom blocks under CDF while others like those constructed at Lumbo, Sinafala Secondary School and Namwambwa were built using donor support.

Accommodation for teachers is another problem hindering education. The tour showed that there are several schools with inadequate teaching staff due to lack of accommodation which has prompted Hon. Chisangano to prioritize construction of houses. At one school, for example, a male teacher has gone to an extent of sharing a classroom, partitioned in half only by a thick curtain, with a family of six among them a wife, and a 20-year-old daughter. The story is similar in most of the 14 wards however, Hon. Chisangano has come in to help as she strongly believes investing in accommodation for government staff, will foster development.

“Under CDF we have managed to build three staff houses in different places, but all that I can say is that it is not only in education where they are faced with serious staff accommodation. The whole constituency, we don’t have sufficient staff accommodation,” Hon. Chisangano said, naming Siapuwa School in Chisanga Ward, as one of the places she facilitated the building of a staff house.

In the area, teachers lived in small-make shift structures that the community came up with. But with the house she helped build, the pressure has lessened.

Another key aspect of her developmental projects is the investment in health.Being a female MP and a Public Health expert herself; her involvement in health development, water and sanitation has been hands on. A maternity building in Lukonde Ward was built under CDF. In this ward, she chose a maternity mainly because accessing maternal health was impossible due to long distances and lack of transport.

“We had a problem of people giving birth in homes, others walking several kilometres to access maternal health,” she says, as she explains her motivation to erect the building in the ward. “ We are thankful to the MP, we have water here and no longer have that problem of people giving birth in homes,” remarked a ward official in ap-

preciation.

However, Hon. Chisangano expresses worry that the medical facilities are far from being enough in her constituency.

Despite her constant calls and follow-ups to relevant authorities, her constituency has not benefited from the government’s 650 clinics constructed in vulnerable communities across the nation. Nevertheless, her engagement with donors and well-wishers makes her appreciate the construction of Ntanga Clinic in Bbondo Ward under the ADRA project.

Further water provision was another of her major projects.

This saw the sinking of 50 bore holes in different wards to mitigate the problem.

Bbondo Ward which was the worst hit, for example, had people spending nights at water points just to fetch some for their housholds. With Gwembe being prone to droughts, animals were dying and the need for water made Hon. Chisangano to work with partners like World Vision and UNICEF to sink these boreholes under the Water Drilling Project.

“Sometimes it is even difficult to prioritise what sort of project to work on as the needs are many,” she says but boasting of having also improved communication in the Constituency in all the wards except for Kole, which she is still working on.

“Network was a huge problem here, we used to climb

trees to make calls, “said a resident of Bbondo Ward.

In the same ward, she has worked very closely with the community and formed groups to ensure development. The notable committees include Water and Sanitation, Communication, and Relief Food.

On Relief Food, she shares how the Constituency was badly hit by hunger but initiated smooth plans to have a share of the relief food from DMMU and World Vision. She says she was also able to link the Constituency to milling companies to help deliver mealie-meal in the area.

The idea was to aid those who had money to buy mealie-meal which was scarce, directly from the millers instead of travelling to Monze. She however, warns that even this year, her Constituency might face hunger due to looming poor harvest. The construction of a modern local court is also one of the biggest projects she is passionately working on in Chief Chipepo area. She said the motivation to build it was because the area has had no court as the first one, built years back, is dilapidated and non-functional.

Hon. Chisangano still intends to facilitate the development of radio and TV receptions in the area but so far, working with TopStar, some parts of the constituency access television signals.

In all these successful projects, Hon. Chisangano prides herself with the full involvement of the community. She believes one of her biggest strengths is to get back to the community.“You really have to be on the ground, get what the people want so that whatever you present in parliament is the truth and it has backing from the people,” she insists.

The MP has developed an open door policy such that constituency members can interact freely with her at any time on developmental issues. ”People can call me for any

problem they are being faced with anytime,” she adds.

Using her community involvement strategy, she has won the confidence of her electorates and managed to form various community support groups for women, youth and ward officials. Her interaction with traditional leadership is also on good standing.

She agrees that her run in office has bordered more on her great networking skills with various government district officials that are crucial to the success of her programmes.

Being female MP, Hon. Chisangano admits that it was challenging at first as all her 14 wards are headed by male councillors but she was determined to remain firm.

“At first, I was not sure whether people were going to accept me. When we built the rapport, they believed in me.

And the way the CDF is being used has given them confidence in me,” she says.

And like any other leader, Hon. Chisangano is not short of challenges.

“As you know Gwembe Constituency is vast and has a lot of challenges, there was one thing I had planned for 2020, 2021, I said that when I receive the last CDF, I was supposed to take it to road infrastructure,” she said.

“As you have also seen that most of the bridges are washed away, that was my plan. But that is something I can’t tell, since we have not received CDF for 2019, this is 2020.”

Other projects that are top on her list include construction of a police post and the Chipepo-Chisekese road that is supposed to be done by the government but is still pending.

Now that her first term is nearing an end, her desire to continue serving the people is according to her, ‘up to the constituents themselves’. She is ready to run for another term, and as a woman, she is eager to share her successes and motivation.

HE Mpika Subordinate Court has convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old man from Mwansabamba to five years imprisonment with hard labour following his arrest for illegal possession of ivory and elephant meat on 3 May 2020.

In this matter, Sydney Musonda was charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of Prescribed Trophy, namely 2kg ivory, and one count of Unlawful Possession of Protected Trophy, namely 46kg elephant meat, contrary to section 130 (1) of the Zambia wildlife Act No. 14 of 2015.

The case was heard by Hon. John Phiri, who upon convicting the accused, sentenced him to five years imprisonment with hard labour in each count on 19 May 2020. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve five years.

The ivory and meat are believed to have been harvested from an elephant that was poached in the Lower Luangwa Valley. The valley is home to numerous internationally acclaimed species of wildlife and is understandably one of Zambia’s main tourism hotspots.

Zambia’s elephant population continues to be threatened by poaching and the illegal wildlife trade.

Since the 1960s more than 90 percent of our country’s elephants have been poached, dropping numbers from 250,000 elephants to about 20 000. For this reason, the penalties for possession of elephant ivory and meat are significant, exhibiting the value placed on these animals.

There are many efforts to restore Zambia’s elephant population to the glory of the 1960s.The Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and its collaborating partners work across the country to ensure that all who participate in the killing of iconic wildlife species like elephants are brought to task by Zambian courts.

Recent surveys show that these efforts are fruitful.

A 2015 survey by Department of National Parks and Wildlife found around 14,000 elephants across the Luangwa ecosystem alone.

That is nearly two-thirds of Zambia’s entire population.

While there is still a lot of work to be done the arrest and conviction of wildlife criminals shows that positive steps continue to be taken.

LATANA Melinda Banda winner of the recently held TMB online TV presenters’ battle says youths must believe in themselves to achieve their desired goals.

Speaking in an exclusive interview after she was presented with K5,000 prize money of the competition initiated to empower young people and sponsored

by Timange Ma Bondi Group of Companies, Latana said it took determination for her to win.

“First of all you need to believe in yourself, dont even mind what people say. We are all not perfect but you need to unleash the potential you have. You need to believe in yourself and everyone will start believing in you,” she said. “ I kept campaiging to my fans encouraging them to vote.”

The competitiona called for

participants to showcase their skills in TV presentation. She said she did not expect to go far in the competition as she was the only female but she truly believed in herself.

“We were many but a lot of people were being eliminated but I stayed on. And being the only female, I didn’t see it coming,” she said.

Initially the contenders were 15 and later trimmed down to the last four. “ The whole presenter’s battle was about me challenging myself. When I was young, I always wanted to do a show to encourage people because I used to be bullied growing up because of the way I looked, small and all,” she said.

“I feel there are some women out there or a group of people going through what I went through so I wanted to showcase what I can do and tell a story out

there.”

She said as a young woman she felt encouraged to win the prize.

“Sometimes women are placed in place where they feel they should not come out of their comfort zone, so I was like me being the only female I feel like I just do it for the females for them to believe in themselves, “ she insisted. “ it doesn’t matter whether you feel you are doing something as long as you are the only female, don’t even feel inferior.”

She thanked TMB Online TV for giving young people a platform to showcase their talent and offering empowerment.

COMBINING work with politics is a big challenge but one needs to make themselves available for both, Erasmus Mukondo Musonda has said.

Musonda, a Chartered Accountant by Profession, and Patriotic Front(PF)Lusaka Province Secretary, says politics is very demanding but one needs to be available.

He has also done CIMA and completed NATECH, ZICA all levels to make describe himself as ' a professional accountant.'

He said it was strange for him to follow a career in accounts because he was doing sciences at secondary level.

Accounts was never in his dreams. After completing NATEC in 1999, in January 2000 he joined Barclays Bank (now ABSA) where he worked for four years.

After his contract at Barclays expired, he was given a package which he invested in estates and furthering his academics.

Currently he is working as a Chief Financial Officer at LRBS joint venture a Public Private Partnership Project.

Mr. Musonda has been a PF member from far back as 2002 but in 2010 he decided to join structural politics.

He has risen from a ward treasury to Provincial Secretary, to date he is in charge of

social media under the PF Media Desk, an office under the PF Media Director.

He created the Information desk in 2015 which is responsible for publicity on social media.

“I have been working with the grassroots and this has made me to have information from the grassroots because I deal with bus drivers, vendors, shopowners, traders and wheelbarrow pushers," he says.

Between 2011-2015 he was vice-chairman for Lusaka Province BTOAZ (Bus and Taxi Drivers Owners Association of Zambia).

When asked about his political aspiration, he said that the party has a final say when it comes to adopting a candidate.

He however disclosed that he attempted to apply from 2010 as a ward councillor under Ward Five and in 2016, he applied for a mayoral position but late Kalumba was picked.

"In 2018, I also applied on the mayoral position but it was given to Miles Sampa," he said.

“Otherwise, my aim is to get into the central committee and one day get into the mainstream politics maybe as an MP or as a councillor. For now, I need to continue contributing to the party as an individual who loves politics."

OHANNESBURG - Africa has now recorded more than 100, 000 cases of coronavirus, according to an AFP tally drawn from official figures on Friday.

Across the continent, 100, 002 cases had been registered as of 1100 on Friday, of which 3, 095 were fatal.

Countries in northern Africa have the highest death tolls, led by Egypt (696 deaths from 15, 003 cases) and Algeria (575 deaths from 7, 728 cases).

South of the Sahara, the highest tolls have been in South Africa (397 deaths out of 20, 125 cases) and Nigeria (211 deaths, 7, 016 cases).

The continent-wide figure is far behind that of the United States, with 1, 577, 758 cases, 96, 978 of them deaths, and Europe, with 1, 974, 501 cases and 171, 011 deaths.

Experts warn that Africa’s figures are likely to underestimate the true scale of the pandemic there, due to lack of testing capacity.

The World Health Organisation, as it announced the 100, 000 mark had been reached, said the virus had spread to every country in the continent since the first case was confirmed 14 weeks ago.
