ETIRED Army generals are among other private and corporate investors who may lose millions of Kwacha following among other things the seizure of 41 properties belonging to Madison Asset Management Company (MAMCO).

More than K250billion in investment funding is at stake with the bulk from individuals who were lured by promises of secured high retains in favourable interest rates.

Earlier this year, the Securities and Exchange Commission temporarily took possession of the financially distressed MAMCO with instructions that compliance with the securities act be strictly adhered to in order to salvage some value for investors.

According to documents availed to the Daily Nation, some of the prominent institutions which could lose money include parishes under the Roman Catholic Church, schools and some prominent individuals.

NAKONDE RIDDLE

THE situation in Nakonde worries us.

The Zambian government has since the weekend placed Nakonde on a total lockdown so as to carry out a disinfection and screening exercise for the district.

But Nakonde is not just on the Zambian side. From what we know, the Tanzanian government has not adopted the same stringent measures as their Zambian colleagues.

This means that much as the Zambian side is taking precautions, the danger still looms from Tanzania.

It has been established that the bulk of Covid-19 infections recorded in Zambia have been traced through Nakonde, which borders Tanzania to the north.

Zambia must therefore approach the Tanzanian government and see how the exercise could be done simultaneously on either side of the border.

We know from foreign media that Tanzania’s President John Magufuli has not been as forthcoming as his colleagues over the Covid-19 pandemic, that he has been accused of downplaying the danger.

While several African countries - Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Zambia had imposed some form of lockdowns over certain sectors of the economy, President Magufuli has allowed churches and mosques to remain open, claiming that healing will come from there.

We realise that Zambia, being a landlocked country is in a dilemma. It has to go through the diplomatic route to get Tanzania to act.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta at the weekend ordered the closure of the country’s land borders with Tanzania and Somalia except for cargo transport.

The order came into effect at midnight on Saturday.

Testing for the coronavirus at border posts will be compulsory for all drivers.

President Kenyatta said 78 truck drivers had tested positive in the last week and had been denied permission to enter.

In recent weeks there have been lengthy queues at the border between Uganda and Kenya where mandatory testing has already begun.

While we do not enjoy the luxury that Kenya has for example of having an outlet to the sea, we appeal to Government to impress upon the Tanzanian government on the need to work together.

It won’t help much to have Nakonde on a lockdown for some days while there is nothing done on the other side.

Those people on the border are one big extended family who mingle freely over the porous border. The customs and immigration posts are a mere formality.

There are countless footpaths they use to cross either side.

Government must be commended by the manner it is handling the novel coronavirus pandemic that has thrown the world’s economy and social life into disarray.

President Edgar Lungu has had to contend and balance the economic and social needs of the people in arriving at the best possible way to tackle the virus.

There has been a robust public health education drive throughout the country about the new normal that emphasises the use of hand sanitisers, social distancing as well as stopping handshakes – something quite unZambian.

While the effort has been a success so far, our concern is over the country’s border entry points.

Muchinga Province Minister, Malozo Sichone who has been leading the multi-sectoral team in Nakonde experienced firsthand the problem at hand when a horde of Tanzanians on scooters tried to beat the lockdown.

Mr Sichone, said police officers and Government officials were stunned that foreigners could attempt to get into Nakonde at the height of a total lockdown when no one could have transacted with them.

That Mr Minister is what must be worked on, ensuring that health risks on either side of the border are eliminated.

Minister urges world leaders to enhance testing, research

By NATION REPORTER GOVERNMENT has assured the World Health Assembly of Zambia’s Covid-19 preparedness and called on the world to leverage efforts to enhance expansion of laboratory testing, and research for vaccines and treatment.

Health minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya told the assembly that Zambia had pitched public health security at the apex of the country’s transformation agenda amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said Zambia had set up an incident management system and activated the public health emergency

operation center in response to the pandemic.

Speaking yesterday during a Virtual World Health Assembly meeting being held in Geneva, Dr Chilufya called on the world to leverage efforts to enhance expansion of laboratory testing platforms, pooled procurement of cheaper relevant commodities and PPE’s as well as enhanced research for vaccines and treatment.

Dr Chilufya explained that Zambia’s Covid-19 response is premised on key pillars namely surveillance and disease intelligence, laboratory and diagnostics, infection prevention and control. He said other measures are case

management, risk communication and community engagement, supply chain and stock pilling commodities as well as human capital.

Dr Chilufya also reaffirmed the call for continued focus on universal health coverage and enhanced efforts to, combat HIV/AIDS, NCD’s as well as maternal and child deaths.

And addressing the assembly, World Health Organization secretary general Tedros Adhanom called on the world to unite and rethink new strategies that will change the response to pandemics and to capacitate health infrastructure in order to overcome diseases.

Kambwili insulted Lungu - witness

A WITNESS has testified that he found remarks uttered by National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili directed at President Lungu to be insulting.

Superintendent Stephen Nkowani, 46, of Zambia Police headquarters said yesterday that according to his findings, the sentiments were insulting and demeaning and should not be used on a human being especially the President.

Mr. Nkowani said this before Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Lameck Mwale in a case Kambwili has been charged with one count of defamation of the President for allegedly referring to Mr. Lungu as a dog.

He said on August 17, 2019 while on duty, he took over the docket of defamation of the President and the complainant was New Congress Party (NCP) Secretary General Daniel Nyati over the utterances which went

viral on social media.

He said Mr. Nyati showed him the said video which he had downloaded on his phone.

Mr. Nkowani said he demanded that the video be downloaded to subject it to further investigations and he submitted it to police forensic headquarters for examination and results indicated that it was not altered.

He said another man Alan Mkandawire went to lodge another complaint relating to an article published in the Daily Nation newspaper regarding Kambwili’s utterances.

Lake Tanganyika’s illegal settlers face eviction

By NOEL IYOMBWA MINISTER in the office of the Vice President Olipa Phiri has ordered the immediate removal of people who have settled at Kabyolwe on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Speaking when she delivered relief support to the affected 345 families, Ms. Phiri said government will not wait for people to lose lives before acting.

She said the office of the National Coordinator Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) will work with the provincial administration to ensure safe movement of people to dry land. She said taking of relief food to affected family does not mean they will continue staying there.

Ms Phiri also said under the building back better programme, her office will ensure it provides the resettled families with building materials and other livelihood support materials.

She however assured the affected families that Government will continue supporting them with food since their fields were flooded.

Meanwhile Mpulungu Member of Parliament Freedom Sikazwe thanked the government and President Edgar Lungu for the quick response.

Mr. Sikazwe said what has happened to the people on Kabyolwe has never happened in the last 40 years.

He said this was a clear effect of climate change.

Mr. Sikazwe, who is Presidential Affairs Minister said people should take matters of climate change seriously.

Self -regulation framework for clergy done

A SELF-REGULATION framework aimed at ensuring that churches adhere to legal, ethical and other standards has been completed, Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Godfridah Sumaili has said.

Ms Sumaili said the framework would help to address the issues of fake pastors who pretend to be servants of God, yet their activities were contrary.

She said the self-regulation framework was submitted by churches and religious organisations.

Ms Sumaili said the framework would soon be launched.

She said that Government would not tolerate people that pretend to be servants of God and mislead people with false biblical teachings.

Government through the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs was consulting the Church and religious community leaders on a framework in which they can operate devoid of breaching the ethics and standards.

In an effort to ensure that truck drivers transporting essential goods do not get into contact with other persons, police are escorting them from Nakonde to Kapiri Mposhi and beyond.

Yesterday, about 300 trucks crossed into Zambia from Tanzania.

The truckers are first screened and their vehicles disinfected before being given police escort out of the border town, which is a hotspot for Covid-19.

Muchinga Province Commissioner of Police, Joel Njase, explained in an interview that officers would ensure that the drivers do not park anyhow nor come into close contact with other persons along the way. Mr Njase said that the Zambia Police Service was working with the Road Trans-

port and Safety Agency (RTSA) to escort the truckers from Nakonde to Kapiri Mposhi.

“Our officers as well as RTSA officers escort these truckers up to Kapiri where our counterparts from Central Province take over and escort them further until they reach their destinations,” he said.

Mr Njase, however, indicated that there was need to have more escort vehicles to ensure that all the trucks only parked at designated parking slots and that the parking was concentrated on serious business.

He said that the need for more vehicles as well as manpower would help to decongest traffic of the trucks at the border waiting to depart.

“It will be difficult for us and may fail to let the traffic flow if we do not have enough vehicles to escort for example a 100 trucks per trip. Already today (Monday) we had about 300 trucks that have crossed from Tanzania and Congo that are being escorted,” Mr Njase said.

He said that despite the tight security escort, police allowed truckers be a bit more relaxed

so as not to make them feel stigmatised.

Mr Njase said that some truckers were complaining that they were treated like they were sick, a situation he said was not supposed to be taken in that manner.

“We are however happy with the compliance levels of the people in Nakonde. We have not recorded any case of a Zambian national trying to defy the lockdown. It seems everyone is appreciating the work that is being done to ensure our town is safe again and we are happy,” Mr Njase said.

222 Zambians arrive from SA, India face quarantine

ABOUT 222 Zambians returning from South Africa and India will be quarantined for 14 days, the Ministry of Health has announced.

And the ministry said the supervised home isolation system for Covid-19 patients in Nakonde had been intensified and some were being discharged.

Ministry of Health director, infectious diseases,, Lloyd Mulenga, said 106 Zambians were returning from South Africa while 116 would come from India.

Professor Mulenga said during the Covid-19 update yesterday that all people returning would be quarantined for 14 days including those in transit to other countries.

Prof Mulenga also said the supervised home isolation system in Nakonde had been intensified.

He said more than 100 community health workers were working with a team of 50 case managers to follow up patients in home isolation.

Prof Mulenga said there were 96 patients in Chinsali Isolation Facility and that a number of patients had been released to home isolation.

Meanwhile, Prof Mulenga said Zambia recorded eight Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours from the 521 tests which were conducted from Lusaka, Ndola and Chinsali laboratories.

He said four Covid-19 patients were discharged from the Levy Mwanawasa Isolation Centre after testing negative twice.

He said the new cases included three from Lusaka, two from Ndola and three cases from Solwezi.

Dr Ng’andu said it was iportant to award all tenders to local contractors as a way of empowering them and keeping the money in circulation locally.

He said during the ZNBC Sunday Interview, Government would always prioritise the local contractors when it came to awarding of tenders.

Government wanted to help the local people become self-reliant and contribute to the country’s economic growth, Dr Ng’andu said.

The economy, the minister said, could grow significantly if the money was circulating locally than if it was allowed to be taken out of the country.

Dr Ng’andu said if more tenders were given to foreign contractors, this affected the economy negatively adding that this was why Government would be awarding the tenders to locals for the betterment of the economy.

Dr Ng’andu said it was the locals who could help in growing the economy because all the money they earned would remain in the economy.

“We need to step up as Zambians especially during this period to help the economy to come back on its feet. I do admit right now that the economy is on its knees and we can do something as a people to ensure that the economy improves.

“So as Government what we have resolved is that various tenders will be given to the local people so that the money can continue circulating in the economy,” Dr Ng’andu said.

Lungu pledges better barracks GOVERNMENT will build barracks for Zambia Army and ensure are they well looked after, President Edgar Lungu has said.

President Lungu said despite the important role that military personnel play, not much had been done to appreciate them.

He said his experience as Minister of Defence, and Home Affairs showed that men and women in uniform were neglected.

President Lungu said this when he inspected works at the Buffalo Park Barrack in Lusaka yesterday.

The President said he had made it a point to ensure officers in the security wings were well looked after.

He said the PF had done more than other governments when it comes to building houses and other supporting infrastructure for men and women in uniform.

The barrack which is opposite Apex University will have over 700 houses and a secondary school.

The facility will also have two primary schools, hospital and office accommodation among others.

The barrack will further come with modern construction equipment which will allow the Army to venture into construction works.

President Lungu said such facilities will be replicated in all the ten provinces of Zambia.

And Zambia Army Commander, Lieutenant General, William Sikazwe said officers were happy with the State-of-the-Art infrastructure being built

by Government.

Lt-Gen Sikazwe urged army personnel to exercise patience as the project would be completed in 2021 and not the scheduled 2022.- ZNBC

LUNGU SENDS MINISTERS TO SORT OUT MINE ISSUES

RESIDENT Edgar Lungu has dispatched a team of senior government ministers to forestall mine closures and resolve contentious issues including the bulk power agreement between CEC and ZESCO. Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu has declared that government will come up with best ways of sustaining the mining industry, which should ultimately increase production.

The Minister said, therefore, that the technical committee which has been constituted to critically look at means of sustaining the industry would find the best ways of keeping the mines running. The committee, which is being led by the Finance Minister said its mission was to engage Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) on how best it could remain sustainable.

According to the committee, Mopani should increase production without job losses especially that it had hinted on placing the assets on care

and maintenance.

Dr Ng’andu however said if Mopani insisted on putting the mine on care and maintenance, then Government would consider a second option, which he could not disclose. Dr Ng’andu was with his Labour and Social Security counterpart, Joyce Nonde Simukoko, Mines Minister Richard Musukwa, Copperbelt Minister Japhen Mwakalombe and technocrats from the ministries. He was speaking yesterday at Katilungu House in Kitwe when he met mine union leaders “We are not here to close the mines, but to discuss with MCM on how best it could keep its mines sustainable with increased production and no job losses. We don’t want MCM to put its mines on care and maintenance because that will mean job losses “So we will discuss with them, but if they insist, then we will look at our second option which I cannot tell you now. President Edgar Lungu has sent us here to ensure that Mopani is not put on care and maintenance,’’ Dr Ng’andu

President Lungu said And Mr Musukwa said the 90 days given to Mopani did not mean that the mining company should stop operations after that period, but reflect on how to improve operations.

Mr Musukwa said Government would also look at Mopani reducing its operational costs while increasing production and maintaining the labour force “Glencore must open its valves and start thinking of how it will continue to keep Mopani running with reduced costs. One way Mopani can reduce costs is to stop dealing

with foreign contractors and giving chance to locals who have the capacity to carry out various jobs.

Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) president Joseph Chewe said he was grateful that the government and some Copperbelt Members of Parliament had continued to provide solidarity during difficult times.

A WITNESS has testified that there is nothing wrong with the title held by Chita Lodge Limited for the land on which former Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander Eric Chimese is accused of concealing property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Testifying as 12th prosecution witness yesterday, Ministry of Lands cartographer Mpotwa Mukwasa agreed that there is nothing wrong with the copy of the title deed, the

deeds register on which the property appears, and the property number F/2303/Q with proposed seven subdivisions. This is in a case in which Chimese is charged with Chita Lodge Limited Director James Chungu with alleged concealing of property suspected to be proceeds of crime. The property includes a two storey house and nine flats. PETROLEUM transporters are enjoying a cordial working relationship with Government and all the challenges being faced in the sector are already being addressed by relevant authorities, the Petroleum Transporters Association of Zambia (PTAZ) has said.

INDO Zambia Bank (IZB) will continue to support economic activities which will stimulate the economy in the wake of outbreak of Covid-19.

Government can count on IZB for continuous support towards stimulating the economy, says Managing Director, Maheshkumar Bansal.

Mr Bansal said this when a team of the Indian business entities offered support to Ministry of Health in the ongoing fight against the spread of Covid-19 in Lusaka at the weekend.

“The government can count on IZB to continue supporting economic activities along with its effort to stimulate the economy in these difficult times as this is our mission and together we can navigate unprecedented times,” he said.

Mr Bansal stressed that IZB had waived all charges on its Indo Net banking facility and on mobile banking platform to encourage customers to use the digital platform.

He emphasised that IZB had launched repayment relief packages to support its corporate, retail and individual customers whose businesses had been adversely affected by covid-19.

Mr Bansal explained that his institution’s initiative had been enabled by the Bank of Zambia prudential relief measures in view of covid-19.

He also said the support the Bank was making was in addition to its ongoing support to Provincial Administration across its national wide branch network.

“The support we are handing over to the Ministry of Health are sanitisers and disinfecting soaps which the Ministry can deploy at critical centres,” he said.

Revenues, grants, and domestic financing totalled K18.1 billion in the first quarter of 2020. Of this amount; Total revenue and grant collections amounted to K15.32 billion, 0.11 percent above the projected K15.31 billion for the quarter.

• Tax revenue accounted for K11.87 billion, non-tax K3.18 billion, grants K271.96 million, and K2.8 billion came from domestic financing.

At K7.1 billion against a target of K5.8 billion, income tax collection was above target by 23 percent. This was mostly driven by company tax from the mining sector and positive performance of Pay As You Earn.

VALUE ADDED TAX

Value Added Tax collection of K2.74 billion against a target of K4.04 billion was below by 32 percent. This is due to the general slowdown in economic activities caused by the COVID-19.

INSURANCE PREMIUM LEVY

Insurance Premium Levy collections amounted to K30.76 million against a target of K38.74 million. Collections were below target by 21 percent due to decisions by a considerable number of insurance consumers to downgrade their policy preferences from comprehensive to third party.

Moody’s Downgrades Kenya Credit Rating On Rising Debt Levels, Expensive Loans NAIROBI – Global credit rating Moody’s has downgraded Kenya’s credit rating to B2 from B1 owing to rising debt levels and deterioration in debt affordability.

The move comes days after Fitch credit rating agency revised Kenya’s credit outlook to a positive at B+ score from a negative.

According to Moody’s Kenya’s efforts to improve revenue collection and inject fiscal discipline are unlikely to be effective enough to stem a weakening fiscal trend.

However, the agency maintains Kenya has a stable outlook. “At B2, risks are balanced and supportive of a stable outlook. Kenya retains strong fundamental economic strengths with a relatively diversified economy that holds strong growth potential.

Moreover, Kenya has a relatively deep capital market and mature financial sector, which affords the government some capacity to issue domestically in local currency and with longer tenors,” the

agency said.

Infrastructure projects that include the building of the Second phase of the Standard Gauge Railway from Nairobi to Kisumu, lower revenue collection and a rising cost of debt are likely to result in large fiscal deficit and keep government debt on an upward trend.

The agency sees Kenya’s debt payment as a share of revenue to hit 20 percent in 2018 compared to 19 percent in 2017 from 13.7 in 2012.

“Kenya’s government external debt, which stood at 31.6 percent of GDP as of June 2017, continues to shift away from concessional debt toward commercial and semiconcessional debt, leading to higher financing costs,” the firm noted.

Kenya, the agency says, should push to streamline and modernize public spending in a bid to improve efficiency.

The rating’s opinion is that the government will continue to face liquidity pressures due to a combination of large financing needs and an increased reliance on sources of financing with less predictable costs, in particular commercial external borrowing and short-term domestic debt.

SA’s Impala closes platinum mine due to coronavirus cases JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s Impala Platinum said it would temporarily close its Marula mine after detecting 19 coronavirus cases among workers reporting back for duty at the site in northern Limpopo province.

“Implats has identified 19 positive cases during the week, all of them asymptomatic. Of these cases, 14 were identified as the result of proactive testing of employees returning to work. None of these employees had started work at the mine,” the company said in a statement at the weekend.

It said the site would not reopen until the appropriate health measures had been put in place. South Africa, the world’s No. 1 platinum producer, is gradually restarting operations in its key mining sector, which was shut down as part of a nationwide coronavirus lockdown now in its seventh week.

Authorities have eased the restrictions to allow mines to operate at 50 percent capacity, but labour unions have since won a court case against the

Meanwhile, Platinum demand will fall by 18 percent this year and supply by 13 percent as the coronavirus batters the global economy, leaving the market with a moderate surplus, the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC) said yesterday.

In its latest quarterly report, the WPIC revised its forecast for oversupply this year in the roughly eight-million ounce platinum market to 247, 000 ounces from 119, 000 ounces.

FIRSTLY, we strongly condemn the violence that was undertaken by unknown people who allegedly disrupted the live radio station in Muchinga Province.

It is also disappointing that instead of letting the investigative and security wings to take the lead, the opposition sympathsers have pointed an accusing figure on the ruling PF. These petty politics are very unfair to the PF which values freedom of the press.

We are made to believe that unidentified people, who might be UPND supporters could have been assigned with this dirty

task of tarnishing the enviable reputation PF has acquired as a fountain of democracy.

We urge the UPND to desist from this cheap politicking and particularly using hapless youths to pursue a fruitless political battle.

Political parties want the donated face masks to be given to the public apart from front line workers.

My questions are as follows: Disposable ones, how do we give to a family which has 12 people per house?

And how many are they supposed to use per day?

Because we are aware that its six hours to eight hours when using surgical mask.

So my simple calculation per house hold which has 12 people, per day meaning its 24 masks.

When we count per week a family with 12 people, it’s 168 masks.

How many families do you have per ward?

Let’s understand as to why the minister of Health is telling us to use the reusable face masks.

The initiative of our MPs and councillors to make sure we find ways and means to have reusable face masks.

Let’s not bring politics on this.

By MUYANI SHINJABALE ALL donations towards Covid-19 fight must be accounted for to encourage more firms to come forward and also to gain public trust, Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe.

Mr Nundwe said donations made to the Ministry of Health be it monetary or materials must be accounted for to avoid audit queries.

He was speaking in Ndola when the Muslim Social and Welfare Trust and the Zambia Occupational Health and Safety Association (ZOHSA) donated items towards the fight against Covid-19 .

Mr Nundwe assured the two donors that the items would be used for their intended purpose.

And speaking earlier, Muslim Social and Welfare Trust Deputy chairperson, Haroon Zulu, said the donation valued at about K25, 000 was aimed at combating the corona virus on the Copperbelt.

Mr Zulu noted that the pandemic had not spared anyone thus the need for everyone to come on board in the fight against the virus.

AZOHSA Secretary, Christopher Mwansa, said his organisation had donated hand sanitizers, buckets, liquid soap and food stuffs valued at over K13, 000.

Mr Mwansa said AZOHSA stood ready to work with Government to implement health and safety at work places even beyond Covid-19 .

Resume flights to South - Hamukale

By ANDREW MUKOMA THE Provincial Administration in Southern Province has appealed to the aviation industry to consider resuming their domestic routes to Livingstone following the reopening of the Victoria Fallas Southern Province Minister, Edify Hamukale, said domestic airline operators must consider resuming the LusakaLivingstone route.

Dr Hamukale said that this would help promote domestic tourism and encourage more Zambians to visit the country’s tourist capital.

THE Livingstone City Council (LCC) has expressed disappointment with the way big restaurants that have provisions of a section of bars within their premises are operating in the tourist capital.

During a routine operation to check on compliance levels, it was discovered that some big restaurants are also selling alcohol to customers.

This has dismayed the local authority, which has threatened to revoke the Covid-19 certificates issued to all restaurants for them to begin operating.

Council Public Relations Manager, Melvin Mukela, said that the said some restaurants were failing to adhere to guidelines.

Mr Mukela said that restaurants were failing to implement social distancing, wearing of face masks and were being overcrowded.

ARARE Zimbabwe's Home Affairs minister has ordered an investigation into the alleged abduction of an opposition MP and two youth leaders.

But WHO currently has limited leverage and lacks the power to enter countries to investigate without their permission.

The faithful will have to wear masks. Priests can celebrate most of the Mass without masks but they will have to wear one, as well as gloves, when they distribute the communion wafer. The communion is to be given in the hand and not the mouth.

Technically, St. Peter’s has remained open during the Italian lockdown which began in early March, although only for private prayer. Only very few people have entered because of increased security to avoid gatherings in the square outside.

The Vatican has not yet announced when the pope will say a Mass from the main altar before the public. His services since early March have been held in an almost empty chapel in his residence and streamed live on the internet or on television.

The Vatican has said that when St. Peter’s is open for large Masses on Sundays and holy days, thermal scanners will be used to check the temperatures of those going inside. – REUTERS.

GOVERNMENT has sent relief food to Covid-19 infected Nakonde to aid the vulnerable and families of the patients, Muchinga Province Minister Malozo Sichone has confirmed.

The relief food was sent through Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

Mr Sichone said the DMMU sent 2, 500 bags of mealie meal to families of those that had tested Covid-19 positive.

The mealie meal were in 12.5 kg packs.

“To aid families of these affected by novel coronavirus and vulnerable people of Nakonde during this difficult time, Government through DMMU has given mealie meal to Nakonde Districts,” Mr Sichone said.

He said Government would continue supporting those affected with COVID-19 and the frontliners in the fight against the pandemic.

“We would like to encourage people of Nakonde that tested positive not to run away, COVID-19 is not a death sentence,” the Minister said.

And Mr Sichone said training of border officials had been concluded while Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials and their Tanzanian counterparts had also concluded formalities for movement of essential commodities.

He said Government had put in place measures to facilitate movement of essential commodities from Nakonde to Kapiri Mposhi under escort to avoid unnecessary stoppages by truck drivers.

“The temporal closure of the border was necessitated by the need to train border officials and screening which has been concluded and with that movement of essential commodities will soon resume,” Mr Sichone said.

ANDBALLERS are on the verge of losing their fitness as they are unable to access on-line training sessions due to lack of technological gadgets and bundles.

With the handball court a restricted area since March when Zambia recorded cases of coronavirus, the players require online training sessions to remain in shape during this period.

But Handball Association of Zambia (HAZ) president Victor Bwalya-Banda said the association had no capacity to provide bundles for over 100 players to access the training session.

Bwalya-Banda said most of the Under-17 and Under-20 male players who are expected to compete in the postponed International Handball Federation (IHF) trophy Africa Zone VI do not have smartphones nor laptops.

OACH Honour Janza says midfielder Chisamba Lungu must forget about his past glory and focus on current performance to keep him in the game.

Janza who believes Chisamba still has a few years to shine should opt for a foreign club.

Chisamba, 29, terminated his contract with the 12-time Zambian league champions Nkana and his tipped to be joining another local club.

In an interview, the former Chipolopolo coach said the midfield whizz is in the afternoon years of his career, so he needs to make a timely move to achieve his final dreams.

“His approaching 30 years now, meaning he is in the afternoon of his career and any move he has to make, must be timely and with commitment if he is to achieve his last dreams

Fwayo resurfaces as Matero coach

By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA ZAMBIAN former international striker Fwayo Tembo has been appointed guest coach for Lusaka Province Division Three side Matero United.

Matero United Football Club proprietor, who is also Lusaka Mayor, Miles Sampa said Fwayo signed a one-month contract worth K5, 000.

“We have hired Fwayo Tembo on a one-month contract as guest coach for Matero United FC. “The contract is worth K5, 000 and meant for a win-win situation for both Matero United and Fwayo as he awaits reopening of the league in Azerbaijan where he trades his skills,” Sampa posted on Facebook.
