I WON’T TALK TO HH, SAYS LUNGU By AARON CHIYANZO in Lukulu

DEMAGOGUES AT PLAY THE current wave of political hooliganism could be a premonition of the dark scenario that awaits the campaigns for the 2021 general elections. It is for this and many other reasons that political players ought to get to the round-table and immediately thrash out their differences. Firstly, political parties must hold intra-party sensitization programmes on peace and co-existence before calling for inter-party dialogue for genuine reconciliation. From the outset, it appears that some politicians are taking the forthcoming elections as a matter of life and death, going by the unfolding events and sentiments therein. Yes, the 2021 elections will be crucial, but should not be a matter of life and death because politics is about giving oneself for selfless service and not self- interest. Some politicians’ insatiable appetite for power gives them away even when they try hard to present themselves as individuals aiming to serve the people. Clearly, within their supposedly attractive discourse to plead for support, a tinge of venom would accidentally exit their mouths. The bitterness with which they speak also gives them away as people all out to get state power for reasons other than serving the people. Invariably, the feud is between the United Party for National Development (UPND) and the Patriotic Front (PF), whose cadres do not want to meet “eye-to-eye.” If the events in Mufulira are anything to go by, then the 2021 campaign trial will not be a walk in the park. There are two pertinent questions which both parties must address objectively; without any emotions. For the UPND, wasn’t there a civilised way of dealing with the events outside the radio station in Mufulira? UPND were in large numbers. Secondly, what were the PF cadres doing in the vicinity of the radio station which was crowded by their opponents? Political foes must just address these questions soberly and the solution will be found! There is absolutely no need to snort emotional outbursts over an issue which can be resolved without further exacerbating the volatile situation. They must simply tame their cadres quietly. In any case, UPND and PF Members of Parliament meet regularly in the chamber and share the same facilities at Parliament Motel. They go to the same bar and restaurant; they eat and wine together at that level, hence the same spirit must filter down to the cadres at grassroot level. Leaders must not speak revenge, but they must speak reconciliation as even the Son of God, Jesus Christ, expunged the “an eye for an eye” approach. Politicians from all parties in Zambia must espouse an approach by Martin Luther King Jr, who contended that: “We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.” There is no need to maim one another when leaders in higher echelon of competing parties are dining and wining together. Youths in particular must open their eyes as some politicians are taking advantage of their vulnerability to coerce them into violent missions. Some cunning politicians want to have their way at all costs and one of their strategies is to use vulnerable youths in their covert acts. Therefore, youths must be wary of politicians, who are deceitfully trying to play smart and promising alms. Such politicians are merely professing fake goodwill; they are demagogues!

T

HERE will be no dialogue with Hakainde Hichilema, but he must stop the violence that his party is perpetuating, President Edgar Lungu has said. President Lungu also directed the police to arrest all law breakers, saying that “enough is enough.” The President said this in Lukulu yesterday after exposing a plot where the opposition had organised some Mongu residents to boo him, as the case was in Monze. Mr Lungu said the plan was to make the PF look violent after they retaliate to the provocation from the opposition. He said since it was known

which leaders were inciting violence, there was no need to call for dialogue but to counsel leaders involved. President Lungu observed that some people were pushing for him to dialogue with Mr Hichilema, the UPND leader, on the pretext that it was the only way violence would end. Mr Lungu however said he had managed to get the PF to refrain from violence and the UPND leader should do the same. "Before I came here, I had evidence of a plot where they were planning to boo me in Mongu and humiliate me as they had done in Monze. They are trying to get the PF to respond with violence so that they can label us being violence. “These are the leaders who

are inciting violence, but enough is enough the police must arrest all law breakers," he said. President Lungu however advised PF members not to fall in the trap of the opposition by retaliating. "It takes one foolish person to destroy the country. And ask yourselves why these opposition leaders don't send their children to commit these acts of violence," he said. President Lungu advised PF members to emulate his approach and to seek justice through the law when offended. He also advised citizens who did not have National Registration Cards to get the documents to participate in next year’s elections.

K67m farmer empowerment rolled out

By AARON CHIYANZO in Lukulu

GOVERNMENT has empowered small-scale entrepreneurs and farmer communities in Western Province with over K67 million to carry out projects aimed at uplifting lives in their localities. This is under the US$50.6 million Pilot Programme for Climate Resilience (PPCR) targeting over 500, 000 beneficiaries in 17 districts of Western and Southern provinces. The project is aimed at strengthening climate resilience in the Barotse Sub-Basin with communities being supported to build resilience by diversifying livelihoods to include income generating activities that are not heavily affected by weather and climate change. Speaking during the handover of the cheques, President Edgar Lungu said about US$100m would be pumped into the programme and extended to 16 districts in Muchinga, Luapula and Northern provinces. President Lungu said under the project, Government had supported 110, 412 households

By OLIVER SAMBOKO NDC leader Chishimba Kambwili was yesterday warned to stop misconducting himself in the matter he is facing three counts of forgery, uttering a false document and giving false information or risk being cited for contempt. This was after Chief State Advocate Margaret Chitundu raised concerns to Principal Magistrate David Simusamba over Kambwili’s conduct. Kambwili is facing three counts of forgery, uttering a false document and giving false information to a public

to undertake livelihood activities that help them increase their income levels, ensure security and adaptive capacity. He directed the minister of National Development Planning, Alexander Chiteme to ensure an assessment of the gains and challenges the programme was experiencing. President Lungu said the project demonstrates Government’s resolve to sustain livelihoods even in the midst of harsh social and economic conditions due to climate change. “The PF Government has always pursued an ambitious agenda of delivering socio-economic development through construction and rehabilitation of various infrastructure projects,” he said. He said the PF Government was “walking the talk and not mere politicking.” President Lungu however said climate change continues to be the enemy to the successes scored and had adversely food security and sustainable livelihoods of people. He said it was the reason Government commenced the implementation of PPCR with support from the Climate Investment Fund through

the World Bank and African Development Bank. President Lungu thanked WB and AfDB for the continued support to different sectors in the country. “A group from the community comprising 105 members has been trained in fibre production under PPRC. The group has so far raised over K200, 000 in revenue,” he said. President Lungu also directed Mr Chiteme to ensure the programme was rolled out to all provinces. And Mr Chiteme said beneficiaries were involved in horticulture, aquaculture, farming and other business ventures. He said beneficiaries were also linked to international markets and that the programme was being scaled up. One of the beneficiaries, Ms Prudence Mwikelela who received over K1m support for her mushroom business said she would soon start exporting her products to Namibia. Ms Mwikelela thanked Government for improving their livelihoods, saying that the PPCR had enabled poor people to start taking their children to school and live a decent life.

PF mourns PS Mulenga By SIMON MUNTEMBA LATE Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Chileshe Mulenga, demonstrated his aptitude as an intellectual par excellence, the Patriotic Front (PF) has said. PF Secretary-General, Davies Mwila, said the party received with shock and profound sadness the untimely death of Dr Mulenga on Sunday morning after an illness. Mr Mwila said in a statement yesterday that Dr Mulenga was a hard-working civil servant who served the country diligently. “Dr Mulenga immensely contributed to the PF in opposition as part of its think tank, deputy Secretary General and acting Secretary General, demonstrating his aptitude as an intellectual par excellence. “He has now joined the great crowd of witnesses led by our patriarch President Michael Chilufya Sata and other PF departed heroes, as they watch from heavenly terraces how the ruling party runs its race in serving the people of Zambia,” Mr Mwila said. He also conveyed the party’s condolences to the bereaved family. “We honour his legacy and mourn his loss alongside his wife Ms Mary Mulenga and the family; as well as the Minister of Home Affairs and staff at the Ministry,” Mr Mwila said. According to a statement by Secretary to the Cabinet Simon Miti, Dr Mulenga was well until Sunday morning when he developed some health complications. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The funeral is being held at the family residence plot number 1105, off Munali road, Lusaka.

Recently, Kambwili burst into rage inside the courtroom at the Lusaka Magistrate court and verbally abused Ms Chitundu for objecting to defence lawyer’s application for an adjournment. Magistrate Simusamba warned Kambwili against misconducting himself because if he continues, he was going to be cited for contempt. “You are an honorable person and

I want to treat you as such. But if you continue conducting yourself in a dishonorable manner, you will be cited for contempt of court,” warned Mr Simusamba. After the matter was adjourned again yesterday, Ms Chitundu asked the court to warn Kambwili and his supporters to stop issuing threats against the prosecution, stating the matter before the court was not a personal issue but that the prosecutors were just simply carrying out their duties.

Mr Nkhuwa

Crooked fuel importers cautioned By SILUMESI MALUMO

GOVERNMENT has urged fuel importers to follow right procedure instead of engaging in illicit activities such as evading tax. Energy Minister, Mathew Nkhuwa, said Government always wanted the players in the sector to comply with the laws. Mr Nkhuwa said Government was ready to give import permits to players that would not evade tax as revenues were critical to the country’s development. He told the Daily Nation that people were very free to engage in the importation of fuel as long as they were doing it above board. The Minister said Government would not deny people who intend to engage in the business because it was their right but it was a must to comply with the law. He said this in the wake of rising cases of fuel smuggling, in which unscrupulous traders label the consignment as transit but later offload within the country, thereby evading tax. “When someone comes up with the proposal, my ministry will be able to look at it and give the import permit. But as they import this fuel into our country they should pay the necessary tax,” Mr Nkhuwa said.

AS Zambia teeters at the brink of the Covid castastrophe, the Ministry of Health has stepped up contact tracing and community surveilance but the situation is dire, its spokesperson Abel Kabalo has said. Dr Kabalo said the ministry has upscaled Covid-19 contact tracing and surveillance especially with the upswing of cases to curtail spread of the pandemic. And the country’s two biggest hospitals are battling to save lives of people on oxygen who are struggling to breathe, Professor Lloyd Mulenga, Director Infectious Diseases has said. Prof. Mulenga said in an interview yesterday that the University Teaching Hospital had patients and so did Levy

Mwanawasa Hospital, all labouring to breathe due to covid. The Professor said, “we are on the verge of a catastrophe. We have a lot of sick people on oxygen. People labouring to breath.” He said the number of BIDs (brought in dead) was also frightening because there were too many sudden deaths and people just collapsing. There are also, he said, suspicious cases in many private health facilities. “We have beefed up the numbers of doctors and other health personnel but it is scary,” Prof Mulenga said. He said there were VIPs (very

important persons) admitted and people from the high density areas because everyone was affected. Dr Kabalo said officials were still on the ground to carryout contact tracing to ensure that Covid-19 does not affect more people. Dr Kabalo said Zambia is at the brink of a Covid catastrophe because people have not taken the disease seriously and refuse to mask and social distance. He complained that people were not masking up or bothering to observe Covid prevention guidelines. He also warned that there was no self-treatment for Covid and all suspected cases must

be reported to the health authorities. He explained that covid was making sugar levels to go up in some cases, simulating diabetes and therefore treatment could not be standard for all patients. “There can not be a standard treatment for patients as people are treated according to what they present,” he said. Meanwhile, the ministry has instituted inspections of private facilities to ensure compliance with covid-19 testing protocols. This followed complaints of lack of testing in some facilities leading to suspected covid deaths after patients are discharged.

Litunga, BRE Kuta only authorities to comment on Baroste agreement - Lungu By KANGWANDA MUCEMBELE

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says the only authority that has power and mandatory to comment on the Baroste agreement of 1964 is the Litunga and the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE). President Edgar Lungu further disclosed that it’s only the Litunga alone who can dissolve the Barotseland agreement of 1964 because it’s only him who signed the treaty. President Lungu said this last night in Sioma at County lodge which is built next to

Zambezi river where he was lodging. He told his cabinet ministers and party members last evening that the Barotseland Agreement of 1964 was signed between First Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and Sir Mwanawina Lewanika and the British government as a witness. President Lungu has since advised people trying to seek audience with him over the agreement to go through the Litunga and the BRE Kuta before meeting him. The Head of state added that he will not recognise any group or small political

parties that are bent on creating confusion over the Barotse agreement without following normal procedure. The people of Barotseland , Chiefs and youths should engage the BRE Kuta not me. It’s only the BRE Kuta that has the mandate to engage me over the Barotseland Agreement of 1964. He said as President of Zambia, he will reach consensus with the responsible authority who is the Litunga and the BRE, adding that the Litunga and the people of Barotseland are also part of one Zambia One nation.

SPEAKER of the National Assembly Dr Patrick Matibini should take stern action against Choma Central Member of Parliament Cornelius Mweetwa if he fails to apologise for disrespecting Vice President Inonge Wina. Patriotic Front (PF) women in Lusaka said it was disrespectful for Mr Mweetwa to have uttered derogatory remarks against the Vice-President, let alone walk out on the Speaker. PF vice provincial chairlady, Chilando Chitangala, said it was sad that Mr Mweetwa refused to apologise on the floor of the House. Ms Chitangala said it was

heart-breaking that at a time women were fighting for 50 percent representation in Parliament, Mr Mweetwa went on to disrespect MsWina, a mother and grandmother. At a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Ms Chitangala noted that Ms Wina had inspired many women to join politics because of her exemplary leadership style and behaviour. She said Ms Wina had inspired a lot of women who were now holding influential positions in Government. She called on the Speaker to take the matter seriously because Mr Mweetwa was among those, who were making it difficult for women to be in politics.

still high - Tonga By SILUMESI MALUMO THE nomination fees are still high and unacceptable, and need to be reduced further because many will be disadvantaged, Third Liberation Party has said. Party president Enock Tonga said the fees would disadvantage especially the youths who had nothing to offer but they want to contest for political positions. Mr Tonga said in an interview yesterday, if Electoral Commission of Zambia went ahead with the proposed nomination fees this would be unfair to people who were struggling to earn a living during this difficult times. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has reduced to K100, 000 from K150, 000 the presidential nomination fee for the 2021 general elections after stakeholders rejected the proposal of K150, 000, describing it as prohibitive. According to the latest proposals, male aspiring presidential candidates are expected to pay K100, 000 while female, youth and disabled State House hopefuls will have to pay K80, 000 from the earlier proposal of K120, 000. Men aspiring to be Members of Parliament will have to pay the commission K20, 000, a reduction from the earlier proposal of K25, 000. CHIMESE’S BANK ACCOUNTS CLEAN - WITNESS By OLIVER SAMBOKO THERE is no suspicious transaction on bank accounts belonging to former Zambia Air Force (ZAF) commander Eric Chimese, a witness has testified. Absa premier relationship manager, Bruce Chikontwe, said this yesterday when he testified in a case Chimese is charged with Chita Lodge Director, James Chungu, with concealing of property suspected to be proceeds of crime and money laundering. The case is before Lusaka Magistrate, Nsunge Chanda. Mr Chikontwe, 48, said Absa, which was previously known as Barclays, did not report any suspicious transaction to the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on Chimese’s two Kwacha accounts and one dollar account. In his evidence, he presented to court bank statements for the three accounts from January 2012 to July 24, 2018. He said in October 2017 when Chimese received his gratuity amounting to K421, 344 he was in Kitwe and he would therefore not know what was happening on the former ZAF chief’s bank accounts. Mr Chikontwe said the DEC did not brief him that it had seized the gratuity Chimese received from ZAF when his contract was about to expire. He admitted that the gratuity was not a suspicious transaction and that it was not criminal for one to be paid gratuity. He said Absa, then Barclays, never reported to the DEC any suspicion or complaint relating to Chimese’s bank accounts. Trial continues on July 29, this year.

‘Govt and chiefs should empower women’ By PETER MALASHA

GOVERNMENT should work with traditional leaders in promoting women land rights and ownership, the Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) has said. ZNWL Mkushi chairperson, Getrude Banda, said empowering women with land, be it customary or state, would enhance the livelihood of women as land was a resource. Ms Banda said Government and traditional leadership should prioritise empowering women with land because they were the most vulnerable in society. She said if women owned land their vulnerability could be reduced because they would use the resource as capital and venture into real estate and farming. The ZNWL was speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation. “We are reiterating the call to Government and traditional leadership to promote and enhance women land ownership. “Government should prioritise allocating land to women than men because they are mostly vulnerable in society. Promoting women land ownership will empower them economically as it is a resource,” Ms Banda said. Ms Banda however hailed Mkushi’s chief Chitina for promoting women land ownership in his chiefdom. She urged other chiefs to emulate chief Chitina who has taken a good stance to promote women land ownership in his chiefdom for development.

ZJC Secretary General, Kwaela Mwanza, said the UPND leader should denounce violence and tame his violent cadres He said the opposition had also gone on a tirade of disrespectful conduct towards Government officials. Mr Mwanza said it was unfortunate that UPND deputy spokesperson, Cornelius Mwetwa, could justify his demeaning words against Vice-President, Inonge Wina, as freedom of speech. “Madam Inonge Mutukwa Wina should not be respected only on account of being the Vice president of Zambia but because she is old enough for even Mr Mweetwa to call mother,” Mr Mwanza said.

In this matter, the bus drivers sued Shanzi and Banda for allegedly misappropriating funds meant for development activities in the constituency, generated from public busses procured by constituency members. “The relief sought herein is an order that Joseph Shanzi and Dickson Banda particularly who disobeyed and disregarded the court process be committed to prison for their continued contempt of Court for non-compliance, disobedience of the Court proceedings of the 23rd April, 2020.” The drivers are seeking relief that the defendants , their agents, and servants conduct in deliberate disobeying the said Court process changed and altering the ownership of the two Hino buses registration No. BAL 7042 and BAL 7043 at RATSA, fraudulently doctored minutes of the ward officials purporting to be Constituency officials , chasing Chishimba and the members from Choma ,Monze bus station in Chawama constituency and suspending some other officials perceived to have interest in this matter particularly Mr Capson Mwanza the constituency vice-chairman which is prejudice to the administration of justice. “That we pray to this honorable Court that the defendants should be committed to prison for being dis-respective to this honorable Court,” stated the plaintiffs.

IT will not be easy for the UPND to win the 2021 general elections due to the tribal tag aligned to it, former Islamic Supreme Council president Suzyo Zimba has said. Mr Zimba said from the word go the party had been perceived to be that of Southern Province which had made it difficult for many people to support it. He said Zambians had seen that the political party only embraced southerners and they had opted for political parties with a national face. Mr Zimba in an interview yesterday, said even if the UPND formed a pact with National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili as long as Mr Hakainde Hichilema would be at the helm, nothing would change. He said people opt for a political party with a national face because it had interest of all Zambians. “Look the only way the pact can work and I want to make it clear unless Kambwili becomes head of that and Mr Hichilema gives up that desire he has for the Presidency, it won’t work. If you look at the voting pattern add all the registered voters in Southern Province then compare with other Provinces it is very difficult actually for a Southerner to win because it is something we have planted to say UPND is for Southerners. “There is evidence, there a lot of Members of

Mr Zimba Parliament in UPND from Southern Province , so it is seen to be the party for the Southerners and this has angered many, they do say that why should a party be for Southerner,” Mr Zimba said. Mr Zimba the tribal tag was a major cause why UPND would continue to be in opposition for a longer period of time. He said if something changed in the party hierarchy it can change the perception Zambians had because it would at least contain a national face.

Vote patterns must change, says political analyst By BENNIE MUNDANDO THERE is need for political paradigms to shift and electoral swings to change where electorates choose to attach significant value to their vote as opposed to flowing along the tides of regional and tribal politics, political activist Patrick Luneta has said. Mr. Luneta said in an interview yesterday that it was time to look at the calibre of party presidents, Members of Parliament, mayors, councillors and indeed other elective office bearer and “filter so that

the residue is thrown out.” Mr. Luneta said the country was in dire need of a distilled representative leadership as opposed to those who peddled regional and tribal politics. “We end up where we are, having high-ranking elected office bearers who are propagating tribalism, violence and embody elements of serious moral decay because we easily move with the tides. “Voter patterns can attest that we vote based on external influence and not on value. It is only in 2006 in Livingstone where we saw a value-based vote pattern when they elected

Sakwiba Sikota as MP and voted for Levy Mwanawasa as president,” Mr. Luneta said. He said there was need for enlightment among voters on the need to vote for credible individuals capable of transforming their lives as opposed to voting on tribal and party lines, a feat he said was responsible of lack of development in some parts of the country. “We need to be detailed as we near the 2021 polls otherwise we will be putting the blame of politicians when we should have a fair share of the blame,” he said.

condemn the violence instead of celebrating it,” he said. Mr Mwanza said has commended President Edgar Lungu for displaying mature leadership and wisdom by guiding his cadres not pay evil for evil. “This shows political maturity and love and care for the lives of the Zambian Youth and the general populace as a whole,” Mr Mwanza said. He has called on we further call on Ms Wina not to be distracted in her quest to build a better Zambia for all. Mr Mwanza demanded that Mr Mweetwa should be magnanimous enough to apologise as this was one way he would prove that he was well-cultured with real Zambian cultural background.

Masansa road in Mkushi deplorable By PETER MALASHA LUANO and Mkushi farmers have bemoaned the deplorable state of Masansa-Mpula road connecting Great North Road in Kapiri Mposhi. The road was in a bad condition and needed urgent attention In an interview, farmers’ representative, Richard Lishimba, said farmers were facing challenges in transporting farm produce and other commodities from the area. Mr Lishimba said motorists struggled to drive on the road from Mkushi in Masansa, taking three hours on the 50Km stretch to reach Mpula junction. He said Mkushi was the highest grower of wheat and soya beans and yet the roads were bad, forcing transporters to shun the area in fear of damaging motor vehicles. Mr Lishimba said since 2010 the road had not been worked on, hence the urgent need to have it rehabilitated. “The road has not been done since 2010. The distance of 50Km takes almost three to four hours. There is another road from Kabwe which passes through Mukonchi across Lunsemfwa River. The bridge has been done at Lunsemfwa River in readiness for this same road but nothing has happened. “And it goes to Luano district. From Luano the road goes to Masansa, it joins the one from Mpula and they meet at Masansa. From there it goes down to Chiponya connecting Mkushi on Great North Road,” Mr Lisimba said. He noted that roads in Lusaka were being refurbished with accompanying fly-over bridges but nothing much was being done in rural communities where the food is grown. Mr Lishimba appealed to Government to work on the two roads.

PIC told to ensure Eskom viability before taking equity JOHANNESBURG - The Public Investment Corporation (PIC), Africa’s biggest fund manager, must ensure that state-owned power utility Eskom will operate profitably before its R92 billion debt pile is converted to equity, said Deputy Finance Minister David Masondo. The plan proposed by workers’ unions that the PIC convert its debt into equity to help ease the power utility’s debt burden “has the potential to work,” Masondo said. While Eskom has been able to pay interest on the debt, the power utility would need to generate sufficient revenue and profits to pay dividends, Masondo said. “The PIC must ensure that the expected dividend earnings will be reasonably higher than the current interest earned on their loans,” Masondo told the City Press newspaper. “Eskom must meet certain conditions if converting PIC debt to equity is to be successful and sustainable.” Eskom, which supplies almost all of South Africa’s power, has about R450 billion in debt and its revenue doesn’t match service costs. A proposal that the fund manager, which manages over R2 trillion, take a stake in the utility, was submitted to Treasury this year, the PIC chair Reuel Khoza said in June. – BLOOMBERG NEWS.

GORDHAN CALLS ON SAA UNIONS, CREDITORS TO BECOME 'CO-CREATORS OF A NEW NATIONAL AIRLINE'

J

OHANNESBURG Ahead of a key vote on the future of embattled national carrier SAA, Pravin Gordhan's Department of Public Enterprises has called on unions and creditors to become the "co-creators of a new national airline." Some seven months after it entered business rescue, a vote on the airline's future is at long last expected take place today. Stakeholders will vote to accept or reject the amended business rescue plan drawn

by up business rescue practitioners Siviwe Dongwana and Les Matuson, which includes the retention of only 1, 000 jobs, as well as offers of voluntary severeness packages to staff to reduce the airline's wage bill. A vote in favour of the plan by 75 percent of the voting interests is required to carry the vote. "Should creditors vote not to support the business rescue plan, SAA would face liquidation," said the DPE,

which would mean far lower severance package payouts to staff. – FIN24.

ZNCC seeks tax relief in mid-term budget Covid-19 constraints hit Botswana fuel supply, leading to shortages GABORONE - The Covid-19 lockdown, which has seen local fuel refineries reduce output in South Africa, has led to shortages in neighbouring Botswana, which has not been able to receive normal deliveries since the easing of the national shutdown. The landlocked country, which relies largely on South Africa for its fuel imports, has faced severe supply constraints over the past two weeks. The shortages have resulted in panic buying among some consumers, prompting the government to tap into its strategic reserves and source fuel from alternative suppliers in the region such as Namibia and Mozambique. The sparsely populated nation of 2.4 million inhabitants has registered low Covid-19 infection rates, with only 314 cases of the virus identified and a single death. But the knock-on effect of the virus in SA has nevertheless been harsh. "We have not received the normal supply of fuel from South Africa and that has caused supply challenges from the retailers. The situation has not stabilised and we had to make use of our strategic reserves," said Mmetla Masire, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mineral Resources. "We are now receiving about a third of our normal supply," he said adding that it was not clear when the situation might ease. The country normally keep 12 days of supply in the strategic reserves. Masire suggested the supply constraint was due to refineries not producing at full capacity due to the lockdown, which slashed output. He added the country requires about three million litres of fuel a day. Adding to the fuel supply constraints are bottlenecks at Botswana's ports of entry, where truck drivers transporting fuel are subjected to mandatory 14-day Covid-19 quarantine before entering the country. – FIN24.

HARARE - The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) that represents over 7, 000 business entities countrywide, says Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube should use the mid-term budget review this week to include tax relief measures under the Government’s $18 billion economic recovery and stimulus package. President Mnangagwa announced the bailout package on May 1, 2020 aimed at reinvigorating the economy and providing relief to individuals, families, small businesses and industries impacted by the economic slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic and measures taken by the Government to contain the

disease. Analysts now expect the domestic economy, which declined by an estimated 6.5 percent according to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, to shrink by about 15 percent due to the impact of the coronavirus global pandemic. In its recent forecast, the World Bank projected Zimbabwe’s economy might contract by 10 percent from the initial growth forecast of 2.7 percent. Zimbabwe is nearing about 1, 000 positive cases of the coronavirus, which has shuttered global economies and led to millions of job losses and poverty and nine deaths. It is expected that the deadly viral disease will turn upside down Ncube’s initial growth projection of three percent this year, which he announced

British economy likely to take longer to recover LONDON. – As the International Monetary Fund predicted a 10.2 percent contraction of Britain’s economy in 2020, gloomier than its previously projected contraction of 6.5 percent, economic watchers said Britain’s economy hit harder by Covid-19 than previously thought could take longer than expected to recover. “Even with the relaxation

of some Covid-related restrictions on economic activity, a degree of precautionary behaviour by households and businesses is likely to persist. The economy, and especially the labour market, will therefore take some time to recover towards its previous path,” the Bank of England said. Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, was concerned

late last year in the 2020 national budget, to a decline. Coronavirus came as the economy already faced numerous headwinds including low commodity prices, shortage of power and foreign currency, high operating costs, exchange rate volatility, high cost of utilities and expensive and short-term funding constraints. “The chamber acknowledges that the stimulus package will go a long way in ensuring that industry is resuscitated as this will help in providing resources for potential rebound opportunities given the Covid-19 pandemic negative impact on sectors of the economy,” ZNCC said. The business lobby said the funds under the recovery and stimulus package should be easy to access and should not

about the situation now, because two weeks after most shops reopened in England, footfall is still only half what it was a year ago. “By European standards, Britain’s recovery remains slow,” she said. Official statistics showed that Britain’s gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 2.2 percent in the first quarter, the worst contraction in 41 years, and the economy shrank by a record 20.4 percent in April. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development forecast a slump of 11.5 percent of GDP in Britain in 2020 in a single wave

come from printing money, have a grace period of at least five months and clear timelines for its disbursement to be effective. But ZNCC said to be effective, Ncube should consider a cocktail of tax relief measures that should cover value added tax, payment dates for individual tax and VAT, review of taxable amounts under intermediated money transfer tax, re-look the tax free threshold and retain duty on cigarettes. However, ZNCC said the ad valorem excise rate should be maintained at 20 percent of the taxable amount, while the specific exercise component should be hiked from $100 per mille to $160, subject review again in November. – THE HERALD, Zimbabwe.

scenario. Lockdown restrictions have led to sharp falls in economic output. Aviation, manufacturing, hospitality, retail and construction have been hit hardest. Prime Minister Boris Johnson put the country on lockdown on March 23, banning non-essential travels and closing schools and shops to limit the spread of the coronavirus. The government has gradually lifted the lockdown since mid-May, allowing non-essential retailers to reopen since June and pubs, bars and restaurants to resume business since last Saturday. – XINHUA.

Tuesday 14 July, 2020 ANTONIO MOURINHO MWANZA COME ON GUYS, THIS IS 2020 Why should a woman’s hard-work, talent, potential, dedication and achievements be reduced to a skirt and her private parts? We, men do interviews all the time and no one asks us about our sexual escapades; no one asks us how many girlfriends, slay queens, one rounders we have or we have had. So why should women be subjected to silly questions whose only purpose is to make them look cheap and immoral? Why can’t we ask them questions that focus on the bigger picture, the real issues affecting people? Why should interviews with women be reduced to chats about sex and promiscuity? Every time a woman makes it in life ati ni hule. Even at UNZA, the highest institution in the land, a reservoir of intelligentsia where the creme-de-la-creme of intellectuals ought to reside, when a woman, a girl, graduates with flying colours, SOME people will label her an STG (Sexually Transmitted Graduate). Like really!!! Awe guys, God has endowed our girls, our women with the same exact ability and potential to excel in life as men. Our girls have the same potential, the same ability as us men to make it in life; it’s hard work, discipline, vision, dedication that matters; it’s not genitals or gender that matters, so let’s learn to respect and encourage our girls and women to fulfill their potential and achieve success. Ask questions that will impact the lives of those listening not kufunsa va ziii monga porridge ilibe salt na sugar. This is 2020 for crying out loud; stop tearing our women; like PAC said it’s time to heal our women, fight for our women. So if you don’t have what to ask other than vamu skirt then keep quiet. Let’s learn to treat our women, our girls with the love and respect they deserve; let’s not be treating them like sexual objects. No. Let’s stop this stereotype. COMMENTS: Chiko Katongo: Very true, it’s sad that women are not supposed to be great once we rise we are labelled otherwise. Nono Mu: Lol Ummmm Chellah disrespected women not too long ago and everyone clapped lelo narrative yachinja pa shosho media... When we spoke against him ati we are PF we must just shut up now you see the trend seems to be escalating to unbelievable levels Chipimo Mic Chileshe: This is the same concern I had as well. Chellah called a lot of women prostitutes and shosho media applauded.. I really don’t understand. Andrew Mazombwe: Word bululu. Chiko Katongo: This needs to stop. Feston S Simovwe: Very encouraging words. ! Malunga ChinChin: Profound words, thank you. Jane Mulenga: Thankyou my son, Antonio Mourinho Mwanza, you are blessed. Gwen Kays: Very true even us looking for jobs it’s the same and corruption is everywhere It’s not really fair. Steven Kaoma: That’s the controversy surrounding her life so all she needed was to answer and laugh it over than the way she reacted, his worship the mayor of the great city of Lusaka was asked whether he was mad he answered without taking offence boss. Kennedy Mambwe: Should the stupidity of jealous people define the questions you should be asked. Oh please! If she says yes buhule bwampanga so what to you and me? Let’s deal with real issues and be mature. Charlotte Næss: Steven, the point here is to realise that women too have the same capabilities and potential as men. Nothing and absolutely NOTHING can prevent them from making it big. Therefore, the thought of ssuming when one woman makes it big, ninshi she used her BOTTOM awe. So the reporter should have asked Mutale a better question than that humiliating one. PERIOD! Loveness Chibemba: We as women need to live free from discrimination. Well said brother Antonio Mwanza. Bravo! Charlotte Næss: Well done you thank you for saying it!! Alfred Joseph: In as much as I may agree with you, let me stress that the question Mwanza Mutale was asked was in line with the allegations made against her by the general public hence, the interviewer was in order to ask her that question so that she can clear the air

Friends and relatives: Lessons from RB

MWEETWA MUST REFLECT ON THE SPEAKER’S RULING Dear Editor,

F

IRSTLY, we would like to join the Zambian people in condemning the dishonorable conduct that was expressed by UPND Choma MP Cornelius Mweetwa by referring to the Vice President as “shallow.” In the past few years, we have counted Mr Mweetwa to be among sober UPND MPs who have practiced civil and issue-based politics devoid of character assassination. On many facets, irrespective of what transgression Vice President Inonge Wina may have committed, calling her “shallow” is the dishonorable conduct that under any circumstances cannot and must not be justified. It is therefore wrong for the opposition politician to stand on his feet even in the aftermath of the counsel from the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Patrick Matibini. The Speaker has parens patrie (parental jurisdiction) over all parliamentarians, therefore Mr Mweetwa must reflect on his ruling. We take cognizance of the irrefutable fact that it is such inflammatory and uncoded language that is contributing to the never ending political tension in the country. In this era where there is a hostile environment, leaders must refrain from the politics of name calling and instead observe mutual

respect for one another. The UPND leader must take note that the Vice President and Patriotic Front commands a huge following across the country and it is likely that the supporters may take offence and react to such statements. Using words like “shallow” is insulting not only to the Vice President and the PF but also the Zambian people who reposed confidence in her as Republican Vice President. We wish to remind Mr Mweetwa that we do sympathise with his plea to exercise his freedom of expression in and outside Parliament. In the same vein, this right can be exercised with utmost civility and sober language. He can intelligently put across cogent arguments and poinst at the percived wrongs. It is also unconventional

in our parliamentary system for Mr Mweetwa to demand for an apology outside the August House from the Vice President for what was said within the precincts of the National Assembly. We challenge Mr Mweetwa to use applicable parliamentary procedures to impeach any statement issued at the floor of the House. We are disappointed with the gross misconduct that was committed by Mr Mweetwa. We feel he must reflect on the Speaker’s ruling and apologise to the Vice Presidency or alternatively put across and argue his case before the floor of the House regarding the statement from her. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Youth Rights Activist, Lusaka.

Dear Editor, PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda had a close friend whom he knew from their UNIP days. They became very close after their days in government. So, when he was elected President in 2008, his close mate was elated - rightly so - that his close buddy was now in the driving seat of the country. He was one of the first to visit him as President. “I want to be minister of Defence or Home Affairs or Foreign Affairs...” the friend told the President, choosing for himself the three most powerful positions in government. But the problem was that this friend had no proper qualifications apart from having served in UNIP structures and rose within the ranks and file of the one-party state system. He only had “standard three” or something like that! The President explained how difficult it would be to choose a very close friend as minister at the expense of qualified people in the MMD who were already in Parliament. “We need to find something else...” the President said. The friend understood the predicament of the President but instead proposed that he be appointed ambassador to either UK or US - one of the powerful diplomatic posts thus far. “Even India as last resort,” the friend said. Reluctantly, the President said he would think about it and asked me to get his CV for onward transmission to the Secretary to Cabinet Dr. Joshua Kanganja at that time. The President walked his friend to the car park - a rare gesture by the Head of State where they hugged goodbyes. As we were walking back to the office, the President whispered to me in low voice. “Baba...nikuzipima mu life,” he said, meaning one must measure himself and his qualifications before asking for certain roles or permission. “He can’t even be deputy ambassador or counsellor in those countries...,” the President said, before jokingly saying maybe he can be appointed First Secretary in Sudan! “Never put your friends in difficulties by asking for favours which you do not qualify for...,” the President said before ordering me to abandon the mission of sending the CV for consideration. “I will talk to him again...” he said, adding that matters of the State appointments can never be on friendship especially if one is not qualified for the job. You see, I learnt from RB, that each time you go and ask for a favour from friends or relatives, always have the requisite qualifications to make the life of your friend easy. In short, “Kuzipima” or measure yourself - qualifications and experience- before you ask your friends in powerful positions for a job or contract. Make the life of your friend easy. This applies to other things like business. Never ask for business when you have no capacity to deliver..you want a road contract but yet you do not even own a shovel or wheelbarrow! DICKSON JERE.

Use social media to market tourism, youths advised By ANDREW MUKOMA THE young people in the country should fully utilise social media platforms to market the country’s tourism, the Livingstone Chamber of Commerce has advised. This must be so in order to reduce the youth’s focus on petty issues such as rising against the Government. Chamber of Commerce, President Namakau Sianga, advised youths to leverage on the power of internet and social media to market the country’s extraordinary tourism hidden treasures. She was speaking when she featured on a governance programme on Radio Musiotunya dubbed “Atwaambe” yesterday. Ms Sianga challenged

youths to stop abusing Government on social media but instead bring forward initiatives and campaigns aimed at promoting local tourism attractions. She said that it would be interesting for youths to exchanging ideas on how local tourism could be improved. Ms Sianga, who is also the founder of Naleli Women Initiative, further appealed to other stakeholders to get more involved in propelling innovative campaigns to boost the tourism sector in Zambia. She said that for a very long now, Government had been encouraging Zambians to play a role in marketing the country tourism sector. Ms Siyanga said it was the role of every citizen to play their part in championing the country’s tourism sector. And Livingstone Tourism Association (LTA) Chairperson Rodney Sikumba said his association would engage youths and social media influencers to sell Livingstone as a tourism destination.

ELDERLY CITIZENS ENROLL IN COMMUNITY SCHOOL By ANDREW MUKOMA

A

BOUT 60 elderly persons drawn from Linda and Mulala communities in Livingstone have been re-entered for adult education at Linda Trust Community School. Linda Trust Head teacher, Charity Chilambe, said that the school which runs from grade one up to eight has 568 learners. Ms Chilambe said, out of that figure, 65 were elderly persons, with ages ranging from 27 to 65 years old. This came to light when Mosi-oa-tunya Rotary Club in Livingstone led by President Rodney Sikumba donated COVID-19 preventive materials to the school at the weekend. "Linda Trust Community

School is a school which depends entirely on donors and well-wishers. We are running from grade one up to grade eight between seven years and sixteen and we have a total of 568 children. "As you know education is very important regardless of one's age. We

have re-entered those that went out of school so that they can continue learning and also those who have never been in school but have passion for school despite their age," Ms Chilambe explained. Ms Chilambe appealed to donors and well-wishers to

come to the aid of the school so that it could effectively provide the services. She said the first priority on enrolment was given to double orphans while second was to the single orphan and the rest were from vulnerable families.

President Lungu meets Chiefs in Luampa PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has called on the people of Western province to co-exist and strive at embracing peace and unity at all times. President Lungu wondered why issues of tribal conflicts have suddenly arisen in places where people lived together and accommodated each other despite belonging to different tribal groupings. The Head of State said this in Luampa district of Western province when he met six chiefs both from the Barotse and the Nkoya Royal Establishments respectively. “There is need for traditional

leaders in the two chiefdoms to respect the court ruling on the tribal conflicts between them. He said any member who would be found disregarding the judgement will be breaking the law and will be dealt with according to the prescribed laws,” said President Lungu. President Lungu said issues of tribe should not divide the people in the region, there are about 35 tribes in Western province and all along people co-existed and lived together but what is happening is saddening. “You need to be preoccupied with things that affect the welfare of your subjects such as good health care, education and food, not concentrating on issues that are bringing conflicts amongst yourselves,” said the Head of State. President Lungu added that this is why people needed to support the amendment of Bill Number 10 of 2019 that has a specific article that clearly states how government can help in addressing such matters for the sake of peace and unity. And Chief Siwalyondo of the Barotse Royal Establishment in Luampa district has appealed to President Lungu to protect his chiefdom from the increasing numbers of people masquerading as chiefs resulting in confusion and harassment of his subjects in the locality. Chief Siwalyondo who has lived in the district from 1921, noted that he is now fearing

9

for his life following the death threats that he has continued to receive from his enemies in the area. “I was born here in 1921, but what am seeing today has never happened in my area, a lot of people are claiming to be chiefs and are now following people in their home to collect money. Those who fail to pay are being beaten and threatened, so Your Excellency I need your protection,” stressed the traditional leader. In response, President Lungu assured the traditional leader that he will engage the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure that people’s lives and property is protected inspite of their differences. Meanwhile, Chief Kabangu of the Nkoya Royal Establishment has assured President Lungu of his chiefdom’s support and cooperation in order to bring development in the area. Chief Kabangu said government has constructed health posts, a mini hospital, schools and other infrastructures as some of the development that has changed the face of the chiefdom. He said the commitment of the PF government to improve the living standards of the people in the chiefdom has cheered his subjects adding that the entire chiefdom will support the amendment bill number 10 due to its progressive clauses. President Lungu is in Western province for a three days working visit where he is expected to inspect developmental projects, engage with traditional leaders and interact with party officials. - ZANIS

PRESIDENT Lungu wants the Copperbelt Province to stop depending on mining but diversify into the agriculture sector, the provincial administration has said. Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe said the region has been the largest contributor to Zambia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for years even though the mainstay has been mining activities. Mr. Nundwe said this in Ndola at the weekend when Nyimba Investment officials led by Head-Sales and Marketing Manager Willings Mulenedema paid a courtesy call on him. He said President Lungu wants to ensure the Copperbelt province contributes to national bumper harvest and he therefore implored input distributing companies to ensure timely delivery of the commodities. “The President has been saying that let agriculture be the mainstay of our economy and agriculture be serious business. I have seen trucks rolling in delivering inputs and this is because the President has said that let the province not entirely depend on mining,” said Mr Nundwe. He was impressed

that Nyimba had started distributing the inputs way ahead of the farming season, saying the move would help farmers plan in good time. With Nyimba distributing the commodity, Mr. Nundwe said he did not expect excuses from farmers. And Mr. Mulendema said Nyimba was contracted to supply 32, 550 metric tonnes of fertiliser, which comprises 21,028 metric tonnes of D Compound and 11, 522 metric tonnes of urea. He said Nyimba was scheduled to complete the delivery of all the required quantities by the end of July. “On our part we are expected to complete the total deliveries in the next two weeks. We have all the quantities for the entire country in our main hub in Lusaka and for the Copperbelt. We are certain that we will complete in the next two weeks. Timely delivery is our key strategy, ‘’Mr Mulendema said And Masaiti District Commissioner Patrick Zulu thanked President Lungu and Agriculture minister Michael Katambo for ensuring that farming inputs for the 2020/21 farming season were in the district early.

LOOD victims in Kitwe, who have been temporarily accommodated at Buchi Hotel, have started leaving the transit centre citing poor sanitation and lack of proper care. The flood victims have for some time now been crying to Government and the Kitwe City Council for quick resettlement, especially after the outbreak of Covid-19 in March this year. Over 500 flood victims from Bulangililo, Musonda, Mwaiseni, Mufuchani and areas around Kafue River were accommodated at the Hotel and Buchi Hall for over six months, but have started abandoning the place fearing Covid-19 infection. They have also complained of poor sanitation. “Our friends have started leaving because of the life we are subjected to here. We now feel we do not have anyone to turn to because we are not getting any promising response,” said one of the victims Mr Musenge Musonda.

FILE PHOTO : Over 500 flood victims from Bulangililo, Musonda, Mwaiseni, Mufuchani and areas around Kafue River were accommodated at Buchi Hotel and Buchi Hall for over six months, but have started abandoning the place fearing COVID-19 infection.

Mr Musonda said that the victims had been waiting for an update for some months now but to no avail. He said that the people had started going back to their settlement to rebuild the houses that collapsed after the Kafue River start its

banks. Another victim, Ms Mable Mulenga, complained that it was difficult for them to live with children at the transit centre that was overcrowded. “We can only ask for Government to expedite

their procedure of moving us before we all go back to our old place. “We are getting worried day by day especially when we do not get any updates from the relevant authorities and we feel we are forgotten,” she said.

Enhance science, technology, Govt urged By SANFROSSA MANYINDA GOVERNMENT should put science and technology at the centre of development, the Dziwa Science and Technology Trust (DSAT) has said. The organisation has appealed to Government to create a stimulus package for equipment to allow locally based scientists conduct their research without any difficulties. DSAT Executive Director, Veronica Mwaba, told the Daily Nation in Kitwe that it was better to be practical than being reactive in the fight against Covid-19. “Covid-19 has devastated economies as well as humans and we are going to lack big time as a country if we do not invest in science education,” she said. Ms Mwaba observed that the pandemic had taught countries and individuals many lessons that needed to be seriously taken care of. DSAT is a non-governmental organisation aimed at promoting science with a bias on agriculture, education, environment, health, innovation, engineering and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It also aims to engage experts and the community to appreciate the benefits of science and technology

in their livelihood through effective science communication. Ms Mwaba noted that there was need to build confidence amongst health workers by providing necessary equipment if progress was to be made in the fight against the pandemic while adapting to the new normal. Ms Mwaba said that it was impressive to note that the country did not import any professionals to help with the Covid-19 as the Ministry of Health was up to the task.

She, however, encouraged Government to increase the use of ICTs to the majority of Youths especially those in Community Schools so as to see more Youths take the Lead on the use of ICTS. “It would be encouraging to see a generation of youths with the potential to create business opportunities through ICTs. There is no doubt that the drivers of Sustainable development goals are young people,” she said.

“This is a fight to save every life, and we need to save every bed. “We have therefore decided that in order to conserve hospital capacity, the sale, dispensing and distribution of alcohol will be suspended with immediate effect.” He said there was clear evidence that the resumption of alcohol sales had resulted in substantial pressure placed on hospitals, including trauma and ICU units, due to motor vehicle accidents, violence and related trauma. “Most of these and other trauma injuries occur at night.” On the curfew, Ramaphosa announced that “as an additional measures to reduce the pressure on hospitals, a curfew will be put in place between the hours of 21:00 and 04:00.” “Apart from people who need to travel to and from work or who need to seek urgent medical or other assistance during this time, everyone will be required to remain at home. On the wearing of masks, the president said to reduce the rate of transmission, the wearing of cloth masks would be made mandatory. “While many South Africans are wearing masks, there are, however, some among us who are not wearing masks when in public. “It is therefore important that we should enforce the wearing of masks. “Regulations on the wearing of masks will be strengthened. Employers, shop owners and managers, public transport operators, and managers and owners of any other public building are now legally obliged to ensure that anyone entering their premises or vehicle must be wearing a mask,” the president instructed. In addition: “All workplaces and all institutions need to ensure that there is a designated coronavirus official responsible for making sure that all regulations and all precautions are strictly adhered to.” Earlier in his speech, Ramaphosa had expressed dismay at certain behaviours, explaining: “Even as most of our people have taken action to prevent the spread of the virus, there are others who have not. “There are some among us who ignore the regulations that have been passed to combat the disease. They also act without any responsibility to respect and protect each other. - NEWS24.

country, and not regions, districts or tribes.” Speaking during a press briefing in Mzuzu, Ngwira whose party was criticised for being nepotistic and tribalistic when it was in government, said MCP is repeating the same things that Malawians have been fighting against. “The cake is not a national cake as promised, but a cake for MCP. We are afraid that we will suffer even more under the MCP government. Instead of impressing, MCP has clearly shown that it is tribalistic,” said Ngwira. He also accused the new government of rewarding people that funded MCP. “This Cabinet is all about who contributed to the MCP campaign. I see only hands of MCP in it. I doubt if the Tonse Alliance leaders endorsed this,” he said. He added: “To make matters worse, they are now trying to suppress the media through

ILONGWE - DPP regional governor for the North Christopher Mzomera Ngwira has hit at MCP, accusing it of advancing tribalism as evidenced by composition of President Lazarus Chakwera first Tonse Alliance government Cabinet. But Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has trashed Ngwira’s claims, saying MCP did not have influence on the appointments, arguing that Chakwera himself has defended his selection that “he chose those people on merit to represent the

such appointments. Some of the media houses will now be compromised because of the appointments. This is trying to silence the people. The media is the mouth-piece for the voiceless.” But in reaction to Ngwira’s claims, MCP spokesperson, the Reverend Maurice Munthali hit back at DPP as a party that promoted tribalism, “and that is why people voted it out.” “The new government is putting an end to that. Positions are being based on merit and let the people work and see their performance. The good part is that the President has emphasised that the Cabinet will be reporting to the public. Everyone will be held accountable and judged based on their performance,” said Munthali. He asked DPP to concentrate on its opposition business, and let Chakwera lead the country. – NATION.

New Zealand mosque shooter sacks lawyers

WELLINGTON - The gunman behind New Zealand’s Christchurch mosque shootings sacked his lawyers yesterday and opted to represent himself, raising fears he would use a sentencing hearing next month to promote his white-supremacist views. Australian national Brenton Tarrant will be sentenced on August 24 on 51 murder convictions, 40 of attempted murder and one of terrorism arising from last year’s massacre, the worst mass shooting in New Zealand’s modern history. He has pleaded guilty to the charges. – AFP.

UN, EU slam Malian government for lethal response to protests

BAMAKO - The United Nations and the European Union have condemned the Malian government’s use of lethal force during protests calling for President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to resign, and urged it to release detained opposition leaders. On Friday the latest and third mass demonstration held since protests began in early

June turned violent, with police firing gunshots toward demonstrators, some of whom had occupied state buildings in Bamako. Protesters have been calling for Keita to step down over his failure to quash violence by jihadist groups and ethnic militias, and over disputed results of legislative elections in March. four people were killed on Friday. The opposition says the police killed at least eight more during smaller protests on Saturday. Several leaders of the M5-RFP, the coalition leading the protests, were also arrested. In a statement late on Sunday night, the U.N. mission in Mali, the African Union, West African regional bloc ECOWAS and the European Union criticised vandalism by protesters but reserved their sharpest criticism for the authorities. International and regional powers fear political turmoil in Mali could undermine their military campaigns against Islamist insurgents in West Africa’s Sahel region. The United Nations has over 13, 000 peacekeeping soldiers in Mali. The organisations “condemn the use of lethal force in the context of maintaining public order and invite all stakeholders to exercise restraint,” the statement said. It added that M5-RFP leaders arrested over the weekend should be released “to create the conditions for political dialogue.” The M5-RFP, a coalition of religious, political and civil society leaders, has repeatedly rejected concessions offered by Keita as insufficient, including his offer on Saturday to dissolve the Constitutional Court as the M5-RFP has demanded. – REUTERS.

SOLD scones to raise money for school but still missed the whole of Grade 11 due to financial constraints and almost got expelled from school but today, I am a qualified electrical engineer, running my own company in an industry dominated by men, says Melissa Hangoma. Ms. Hangoma, 24, of Old Kanyama Township in Lusaka, says she has seen life at its worst from being thrown out of the house in the middle of the night under a heavy downpour to almost getting ejected out of school for missing almost the whole year by uncompromising school authorities but says God is always faithful to those who trust Him. Ms Hangoma, the only daughter of a woman she barely remembers as she died when she was only four years old while she has never seen her father as he refused to take responsibility after her mother got pregnant, says she has seen the ugly face of poverty. She says had it not been for her aunt who kept her faithful when life seemed hopeless, she would have wasted her life into early marriage or would have veered into illicit behaviour just to make ends meet. “There was nothing rosy about my life. Raised by an aunt who was also struggling, life was unbearable but the worst came when I qualified to Grade 10 and got admission at one of the schools in Kafue. “I had to leave my aunt behind and had to look for a house for rent. There was literally no money. One of my uncles helped me with school fees for Grade 10 but I never set foot into class the whole year in Grade 11. “Even when I was in school in Grade 10 in 2012, there were nights when I went to bed without food. I did not want to bother other people I was renting the apartment with and so, I never asked for food from anyone. Staying alone at such a tender age with poverty hitting me hard, I would have been forced into prostitution but God kept me faithful. “I had no money to pay for either rentals or tuition. I could not return to school in 2013. I went back to Kanyama where I started baking and selling scones to raise money for school but this was not enough. “For almost a year, I sold scones and when I returned to school in Grade 11 term 3, my first headache was the school authorities who told me matter-of-factly that I would not get back into school because I was not serious. “The head teacher even went to an extent of telling me that there was no space for girls who ran away from school to sleep around with men and only retuned when they felt like. She even asked if I had not been married during the time I was away from school. The world was crumbling around me,” recounts Ms. Hangoma.

‘I SOLD SCONES TO FUND MY EDUCATION’ She said things got worse when she got to where she rented an apartment as her landlady told her she could not get in because she had arrears. In January 2014, she went back to the school with her aunt who begged the head teacher to allow her to continue with school despite her absence the previous year to which the head teacher reluctantly agreed. When she went back to the apartment, she recounts, the landlady said she would not

prepare supper. This meant that I was always late for school, and then had to dodge from school to go and prepare meals in the evening before the owner of the house knocks off. “Being away from school for a year and dodging classes from time, I did not perform as expected in Grade 12 but managed to get a full certificate. I thanked the woman who kept in Kafue and left for Kanyama to join my aunt. “A certain private school offered me a job but I did not

For almost a year, I sold scones and when I returned to school in Grade 11 term 3, my first headache was the school authorities who told me matter-of-factly that I would not get back into school because I was not serious.” move in her room but allowed her to stay with her. “But she was a single mother who was also struggling to raise her children. Life for her was hard and bringing me in worsened it. Then, a certain lady from church offered to get me. She had a stable job. The challenge was that where she was staying was far from school but I accepted. “Even there, things were not easy for me. I literally became a maid. I used to go to school in the afternoon and that meant doing all the house chores including preparing lunch for the family. “Also, I had to come back early from school to go and

last because the owner of the school wanted to start sleeping with me,” she recounted. She said in 2016, she obtained a certificate in psychosocial counselling and worked as a volunteer at Kanyama clinic but that was not sustainable as she was not getting anything and she stopped. She then got a bursary to study a craft certificate in electrical engineering at the Thorn Park Construction Training Centre where she also did photovoltaic solar installation and graduated in 2018. Today, Ms. Hangoma owns her own company which was only registered on June 18, 2020, called Melitec Electrical

and Construction Limited but says the only challenge she has to land bigger contracts is lack of equipment as she if forced to subcontract other people. “I have just registered my company and what I lack is funding to buy equipment such as drilling, welding, and melting machines, grinders, compressors, a generator, and ladders. It’s rewarding for a woman to be in a field which is considered to be exclusively for men and I want to make the grade. I am not only seeing challenges of competing with men. I am also seeing opportunities. “There are people who will give you a contract just to see if you can do it. Others will give you a contract because they believe women are sincere and honest and so, I am not intimidated. Of course there are times when people cannot just give you an opportunity to do the work because you are a woman. “Some people want to take advantage of that fact and propose sex over contracts but I will never fall for such because I know how God has led me and would not want to disappoint him now,” Ms. Hangoma said. She believes she wants to be among a generation of women who will get up, get dirty, and make a living for themselves than depending on men all the time. “We look down on ourselves because of what people say about us. I have been discouraged before. I heard this

stereotype a hundred times but I have never been distracted. “Some people, say they have not gone far in their education because they did not have sponsorship but I am here. I had to drop out of school for a year to go and sell scones and get back to school. “The reason why most married women become destitute after their husbands are dead is because of this dependency syndrome where they contribute nothing to running the affairs of their home and when the breadwinner dies, hell breaks loose on them because they are not used to fending for their families. “Women, married or not, must desire to go back to school, get a trade and stand

on their own because that is the only way they will be financially independent. I am planning to take my aunt back to school soon because she has seen me through thick and thin. She has been there for me when all seemed hopeless and she needs my empowerment. “The other thing killing us as women is that we are too smart for nothing. We want to be too choosy when it comes to learning skills. I am living testimony of the fact that women can find space in the men dominated profession. “In this field, you don’t need to wait to be employed because you are an employer yourself and this is something I am proud of,” Ms. Hangoma said.
