SATURNIA SURVIVORS IN COURT TODAY

THE surviving 130 of 236 Saturnia Fund pensioners, from BP are back in court today, 18 years after their claim was commenced.

Over the years the argument has been the cour award of K26 million which Saturnia has disputed claiming that the pension- ers are only entitled to K1.2 million.

ORMER vice president Guy Scott who has been admitted at the University Teaching hospital (UTH) in Lusaka is doing well, Republican Vice President Inonge Wina said yesterday.

Ms Wina yesterday visited Dr Scott and senior Chief Nkula ( Maxwell Mucheleka Kafula ) of Chinsali who are both receiving treatment at the country’s biggest health institution.

Speaking after she visited the two, Ms Wina said health services in the country under the leadership of the Patriotic front Government has have improved.

Ms Wina praised the UTH doctors, “ for taking care of him so well. His royal highness Chief Nkula has a sprain and other complications but doing well also.”

She also pointed out that the hospital was carrying out successful operations which Zambians should be proud of.

She was impressed with services at University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) and called on media to highlight the improved services at the hospital and other local health facilities so that the people can appreciate what their Government was doing for them. Mrs Wina said she was happy that Dr. Scott was doing well and wished him a quick recovery.

Hearing date for ‘undervalued’ KCM set

THE Lusaka High Court has set November 19, this year for hearing an application

by ZCCM-IH to dismiss the matter in which a minority shareholder wants to challenge the alleged fraudulent sale of KCM to Vedanta Resources Plc. In its application, ZCCM-IH want the court to dismiss the matter on grounds that the minority shareholder, Dennis Mumba, was not eligible to commence such an action.

The holding firm contended that Mr Mumba’s notice of motion was irregularity on the grounds that it does not properly describe the respondent (ZCCM-IH).

Further that the affidavit in support of the summons did not fulfil the requirements of the authentication of documents Act chapter 75 of the laws of Zambia ZCCM-IH stated that Mr

Mumba’s application did not satisfy Order 53 of the High court rules as it was filed without the requisite skeleton arguments and thus offended the courts' rules.

Mr Mumba launched a derivative action stating that Vedanta Resources Plc should have paid US $2.909 billion instead of US$25 million which led to financial problems at KCM. Mr Mumba stated that ZCCM-IH was a shareholder in KCM and as such he is authorised to bring the derivative action on behalf of the respondent (ZCCM-IH) against Vedanta and others.

He cited Zambia Copper Investments Limited (ZCL), Vedanta Resources plc, Milingo Lungu as provisional liquidator of KCM and KCM ( in liquidation) as defendants in the matter.

He stated that KCM loss of US$2.884 billion marked the genesis of the mine’s financial problems.

THE Ministry of Health has employed 2,500 health workers during the just-ended recruitment exercise, Ministry spokesperson, Abel Kabalo has said.

Dr. Kabalo told the Daily Nation in an interview that the new employees have since been deployed to different health facilities across the country.

In April this, year President Edgar Lungu directed that 3, 400 health personnel be engaged to enhance measures aimed at curbing the spread of the covid-19 in the country.

Dr Kabalo said that following the Presidential directive, the Ministry of Health recruited 2, 500 health workers across the country.

He further disclosed that the recruitment exercise has since ended.

Dr Kabalo stated that the exercise was a success as key personnel were recruited after a thorough assessment of the needs across the country.

And a former leader at the Hotel Catering, Tourism and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (HCTAWUZ) says the establishment of a privatisation commission of inquiry is long overdue.

Mr Bwalya said recent protests by Intercontinental Hotel and Rainbow Lodge former employees was a clear indication that there were more questions to be answered by people who were entrusted with the privatization of State assets.

He said demands to know what happened to the trust fund Livingstone should not be ignored because only a few ‘selfish’ individuals were benefiting from the fund.

Mr Bwalya called on investigative wings and citizens to develop interests in clearly understanding what happened during the sale of the two big institutions.

“Why was a hotel worth over US$26 million sold five times below its value? Someone must be made to account for what transpired,”

he said.

Mr Bwalya said the failure

Mr Sitwala said former employees of the privatised public assets and all those who were affected during privatization needed to get justice.

He said in an interview with the Daily Nation that there had been a lot of talk about the matter, hence the urgent need to set up an inquiry without any further delay.

“There has been accusations for and against privatisation so the privatisation inquiry will provide a legal process. At the moment, people are simply accusing each other because they don't know the truth,” Mr

And former HCTAWUZ Southern Province senior organising Secretary, Martin Mwaangala, said the privatisation of the Rainbow Lodge, Mosi-oa-tunya Intercontinental Hotel and Eagle Travel has brought suffering to many families in Livingstone.

Mr Mwaangala suggested that overnment should repossess the assets which were sold through the flawed privatisation process.

Meanwhile, former Sun Hotel HCTAWUZ Branch vice chairman, Jones Mutowa, said the privatisation inquiry was the only way to resolving the impasse.

Mr Mutowa said it was sad that some of the negotiators and consultants manipulated the process and the outcome of the privatisation went in their favour.

The stunned relatives were galvanised into action after they realised that their relative was now a convict and tried to go and console him but police officers stopped them in their tracks. The horde of family members, party cadres and well wishers who included some church men and women, then trooped outside.

In what turned out to be a full scale mourning, family members both and women wept openly outside as Kambwili awaited transportation to Lusaka Correctional Facility, just opposite the Magistrate courts.

One female was seen crying and praying in tongues and asking Jesus to come down and show his power. “Ilangeni mwelesa, come down and show your mighty…..”.

Shocked cadres with tears rolling down their cheeks were subdued without their leader but vowed to stand by him.

Kambwili’s relatives could not hold back their grief as Mr Simusamba sent the former Roan member of Parliament to prison after finding him guilty on the two accounts of forgery and uttering false documents but acquitted him on the charge of giving false information to a public officer.

Mr. Simusamba sentenced Kambwili to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour in the first count of forgery and another 12 months in the second count of uttering false documents. The sentences will run concurrently meaning that Kambwili will only serve one year.

This was after the court was satisfied with the evidence that the national registration card (NRC) assigned to Kambwili’s son Mwamba at the registration of the convict’s company Mwamona Engineering Technical Services (METS) belonged to Kambwili’s sister Sampa.

Mr. Simusamba agreed with evidence of complainant Chilufya Tayali, who is Economic Equity Party (EEP) president, and arresting officer Stanley Mumbula that the person Mwamba Chishimba, whose name appeared as one of the directors in METS at its registration, was fictitious as Kambwili’s son was a minor aged eight and could not be a director at law in 2001.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Musa Mwenye said Kambwili is a family man with five children and a grandfather responsible for a large extended family. He said Kambwili is diabetic, hypertensive and that he sleeps with a sleeping machine without which he faces the danger of dying.

US OFFERS ZAMBIA K39BN AID DEAL

HE United States has announced a K39 billion five-year development programme for Zambia which will be invested in health, agriculture, education and tourism.

US Charge d’Affaires David Young said the launch of USAID’s new development strategy cements the US continued support to the people of Zambia for years to come.

“The K39 billion in committed funds are not a handout, nor are they a loan that must be paid back. These funds are an investment in the Zambian people and they are contingent on a successful partnership with the government, the Zambian people, the private sector and civil society,” Mr. Young said.

Mr. Young announced the programme when he paid a courtesy call on President Edgar Lungu at State House yesterday to celebrate the USAID Development project grant agreement.

He said the US was committed to working with the government of Zambia to improve health, literacy and food security for the most vulnerable Zambians including pushing this year to epidemic control of HIV/AIDS. Mr. Young said the US would

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has been sued in the Livingstone High Court for allegedly grabbing land in Kalomo belonging to the deceased George Nsemani Hambwalula.

Mr Hichilema has been sued

by Misheck Hambwalula, the son to the deceased.

It is believed that Mr Hichilema became aware of the land through his partner at Grant Thornton, Christopher Mulenga, who was liquidator of Lima Bank to which one of the three farms in dispute was mortgaged.

It is further believed that Mr. Hichilema allegedly forged the documents to portray that he had legally acquired the land when in fact not.

Mr Hichilema has even fenced the entire land including the grave for the late Mr. Hambwalula in the land in question and made the family of the deceased to be destitute.

But the plaintiff says Mr Hichilema grabbed the land,

and he must therefore vacate farm 3275, farm 803 and farm 801 in Kalomo district.

The plaintiff said Mr Hichilema must also pay at a commercial rate for the use of farm 3275, farm 803 and farm 801 from the time he occupied them.

“The defendant, Mr Hichilema, pays damages to the plaintiff for the mental distress and anguish and loss of his eye as a result of the stroke caused by Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s insults.

The defendant is not a bonafide purchaser for the value of the farm 803 and 3275, Kalomo.

The defendant is a squatter and a trespasser and is illegally occupying farms 3275, 803 and 801.

“The defendant must also produce the contracts of sale or lease agreement and account for any money paid or due to the estate of George Nsema Hambwalula,” part of summons read.

The plaintiff, Mr Misheck Hambwalula has also demanded that Mr Hichilema removes caveats on farm 3275

Government efforts in the quest to improve social services to the people President Lungu also assured Mr. Young that the government was committed to re-profiling its debt as it knew that it was no longer business as usual.

“The debt situation is one worrying area and I assure you that the Finance minister is doing everything possible to return Zambia to sustainable levels,” Mr Lungu said.

And speaking during a joint press briefing with Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu, Mr. Young said the US government was committed to support Zambia’s democracy and its effort to decentralise governance and improve service delivery to its people.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ng’andu said the programme would supplement Government efforts to fight poverty and improve the economy. Dr. Ng’andu also assured the American government that the money would be prudently used. and 803 and stops calling to insult him.

The Livingstone High Court has therefore commanded that within 21 days after the service of the writ of summons, Mr Hichilema must appear in court and in default the plaintiff may proceed therein, and judgement maybe given in his absence.

Meanwhile FDD president Edith Nawakwi has expressed shock over the conduct of Mr Hichilema on the alleged matter.

Ms Nawakwi said she is vindicated that Mr Hichilema had become rich because of allegedly engaging in fraudulent activities.

“When a man is greedy the way Hakainde is, there is no end to it. He grabs one farm after another, what is most shocking and devastating is that he seems to prey on the vulnerable,” she said.

The case of late Mr. Hambwalula, she said, in which the deceased worked hard in colonial time to acquire land from colonialists for the benefit of his sons and daughters and for Mr Hichilema to walk in and grab the properties of a deceased man must not be condoned.

THE five-year K39 billion development programme announced by the United States for Zambia is a major economic boost which should change the face of the nation.

The massive development programme announced by US Charge d’Affaires David Young will be invested in health, agriculture, education and tourism.

With the country reeling from the economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the American aid could not have come at a better time.

It is not a secret that the coronavirus pandemic is not only a health hazard but has also uprooted the world’s economy.

Not one country, from the financial movers and shakers in the world to the struggling least developed countries have been spared.

And for poor countries like Zambia, this kind of help will make a difference in the country’s drive to improve not only the economy but also the living standards of the people.

Mr Young said the launch of USAID’s new development strategy cements the US continued support to the people of Zambia for years to come.

The American envoy announced the programme when he paid a courtesy call on President Edgar Lungu at State House yesterday to celebrate the USAID Development project grant agreement.

This development package clearly sends a clear message to local prophets of doom that the international community has not neglected Zambia as they have been dreaming and claiming.

It is a sign of confidence in the country’s leadership that even in the midst of the economic difficulties the country is going through, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This is the more reason why the American government has seen it fit to invest so much of its taxpayers’ money because it is money not being poured into a bottomless pit.

The investment cements the strong bonds of friendship that have been nurtured through the years, from the time that Zambia attained her independence.

President Lungu also alluded to this relationship noting that the American government has since independence in 1964 provided support in the education, health and other sectors of the economy.

It is a relationship based on mutual respect between two independent countries that will not allow artificial differences to mar their long-term goals.

As Mr Young said, “the K39 billion in committed funds are not a handout, nor are they a loan that must be paid back. These funds are an investment in the Zambian people and they are contingent on a successful partnership with the government, the Zambian people, the private sector and civil society.”

He said the US was committed to working with the government of Zambia to improve health, literacy and food security for the most vulnerable Zambians including pushing this year to epidemic control of HIV/AIDS. This fits in well with the government’s growth agenda that has targeted agriculture and tourism in addition to improving the health and educational sectors.

We note that this is not the first time the US government has come to Zambia’s assistance much to the disappointment of doomsayers.

In April, the United States announced a K180 million support to Zambia’s fight against Covid-19 through Mr Young in an online teleconference discussion.

Ironically the same day, a former Cabinet minister was on one of the private radio stations espousing on how Zambia’s credibility had sank so low that no country in the world was willing to help revive her ailing economy or offer any help.

The gentleman articulated on how the International Monetary Fund and World Bank had offered stimulus packages for countries to access in the advent of the novel coronavirus pandemic that has crippled the world’s economy.

But as we have noted, the ties between the two countries are deep rooted and will not be soured by lies and cheap politicking of perceived repression in the country.

THE Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has maintained that it will not attend the National Day of Prayer, Fasting and Reconciliation on Sunday.

UPND spokesperson, Charles Kakoma, told the Daily Nation that the party could not attend the prayers because some of its members were still being prosecuted.

“Many of our members are being prosecuted and that is the bottom line, no two ways about it. We are seeing real criminals being given

nolle but have innocent people behind bars,” he said. Mr Kakoma said that the UPND would only begin to attend such programmes when all those that were wrongly arrested were set free.

He said the party also stood for others stating that it was not only party members that were suffering behind bars but that there were many other political prisoners that deserved to be set free.

UPND national chairperson, Mutale Nalumango, earlier this week said it would be an act of giving political prisoners a Judas kiss if the party went ahead to participate in the event.

Ms Nalumango said that UPND saw no convincing reason to attend the National Days of Prayers, Fasting and Reconciliation.

THE Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has launched a fiveyear strategic plan for the period 2020-2024 aimed at strengthening the operation of the joint owned water resources along the Zambezi river basin.

The five-year strategic plan which was launched via virtual meeting yesterday was formulated through wide consultations and would guide the operations of the organization in the next five years.

ZRA board chairperson, Dr Gloria Magombo, said the authority was a unique organization connecting Zambia and Zimbabwe in their quest

to promote socio-economic development.

She said the five-year corporate Strategy would underpin the performance of the firm in response to its mandate of managing the Kariba dam complex and the Zambezi river stretch.

Dr Magombo said the strategy was formulated through wide consultative participation of both internal and external stakeholders and would replace the 2015/2019 strategic plan which ended in December 2019.

“The formulation of the current Corporate Strategy further involved a review of past performances and consideration and implementation of the

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG),” she said.

She said the aim of the new strategic plan was to improve the Zambezi river basin management objectives.

This, she said, would contribute to the economic, social and ecological goals of the authority.

Dr Magombo urged management to fully implement the plan to ensure energy security for the two neighboring sister countries.

“This will be achieved through five interdependent values anchored on the concept of “Safety” throughout the operational value chain system in dam and water resources management,” she said.

ABSA predicts slower sub-saharan Africa economic growth

BY MARTIN AKENDE ABSA Group has predicted a slower economic growth in sub-saharan Africa in 2021 compared to 2019 before the outbreak of the Novel coronavirus.

And the Bank has observed that despite the low infection and fatalities of the Coronavirus on the African continent, the pandemic is having a sizable impact on the region’s economies.

Meanwhile, Absa Zambia Plc has predicted that the Kwacha will rebound in the third quarter of 2021 given the current economic fundamentals and high demand of the dollars in the importation of commodities.

Absa Group chief economist Jeff Gable said despite the African continent recording low infections and fatalities compared to other continents, restrictions on movement has largely affected countries on the continent.

Gable said tourism-dependent economies experienced a sharp contraction due to exceptionally weak international tourism which severely impacted the service sector.

The chief economist pointed out that the restrictions in the movement imposed in most countries have affected tourist, service experts and investors movements.

He has observed that despite some countries on the continent relaxing the travel restrictions, some other countries across the world are still observing restrictions on movements.

He was speaking at the 2020 virtula absa data journalism masterclass in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gable said the African economies are expected to rebound in 2021 but at a slower rate compared to 2019 before the outbreak of the coronavirus due to tourism which is not expected to rebound immediately.

Mr. Gable added that debt, particularly in the public sector, is increasingly becoming risky owing to the number of countries in debt distress.

He explained that the number of countries in debt distress or high risk has increased from 8 to 20 countries in the last 5 years.

And ABSA Zambia Head of Global Markets Stanley Tamele has predicted that the Kwacha is likely to rebound in the third quarter of 2021 given the current economic fundamentals and high demand of the dollars in the importation of essential commodities.

Mr. Tamele explained that the high demand for the dollar in the energy and agriculture for the importation of crude and farming inputs respectively is adding more pressure on the local currency.

He further noted that the decline in export of copper, the negative impact on the Small Medium Enterprises such tourism and travel had also impacted negatively on the local currency.

He said the Kwacha is expected to have some relief in the third quarter of 2020.

Dr Magombo said the board expected experts to deliver the Corporate Strategy through honesty, integrity, professionalism and respect.

And giving an overview of the Strategic goals under the plan, ZRA director of Finance, Edward Kabwe said there was need to increase water storage volume on the Zambezi River Basin catchment from the current 181 billion cubic metres to 182.65 billion cubic meters.

He said demand for electricity in Zambia and Zimbabwe was projected to grow to 6 713MW and 6 344 respectively, hence the need for the two countries to ensure the successful implementation of the 2 400MW Batoka Gorge Hydro-Electric Scheme project.

Over 1000 mining licences revoked

By NOEL IYOMBWA OVER 1000 mining licenses have been cancelled this year, Mines and Mineral Development minister, Richard Musukwa told parliament yesterday.

Mr Musukwa said that the ministry requires mining firms to submit quarterly and regular reports and that once they are filed, the ministry studies and conducts inspections.

He further said that the ministry has been conducting inspections on mines based on reports submitted and also undertakes inspections in terms of exploitation of resources.

He disclosed that most affected mining firms have been submitting desktop reports which are not conforming with the activities on the group hence the decision to cancel the licenses.

He said that license holders are always encouraged to seek consent with traditional leaders and communicate with other stakeholders before they start their mining activities.

He said that mining license holders are supposed to oblige with the conditions which are stipulated by government.

Community Development Minister Kampamba Mulenga told parliament she was happy with the increase in the allocation to the Social protection program.

Ms Mulenga said that the allocation has been increased from K 1.4 billion in 2020 to K 3.7 billion in 2021 representing a 61 per cent increment adding that this is an effort to uplift the lives of people in society.

She further said that the social cash transfer will also increase from K 90 to K 110 per household.

BACKGROUND

The Pensions and Insurance Authority, in its 2020 budget, has made a provision towards the cost of engaging consultants and intends to apply part of the proceeds for this provision to cover eligible payments under the contract for provision of consultancy services for development of the curriculum for trustees of occupational pensions schemes in Zambia.

The Authority has been providing training to the Trustees for over 10 years. It is now the intention of the Authority to properly structure the training so as to enhance capacity building of trustees of occupational pension schemes in Zambia.

From the foregoing, the Authority is hereby calling for Expressions of Interest for provision of consultancy services to develop the training curriculum for trustees of occupational pension schemes in Zambia.

BOUT 330 customers from key economic sectors such mining and tourism have accessed the Covid-19 relief packages from the First National Bank (FNB) Zambia.

FNB in April this year started offering cash-flow relief to qualifying individuals and commercial customers whose finances have been impacted

by Covid-19.

From the time the packages were rolled out, about 330 customers had benefited from the relief offers, says FNB Zambia Chief Executive Officer, Bydon Longwe.

Mr Longwe said most of the customers who had benefited from the relief measures were from economic sectors such as mining and tourism.

Untenable debt

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa won’t be able to meet its finance ministry’s debt targets and it may be undesirable for it to attempt to do so at a time when the economy is being battered by the fallout from the coronavirus, according to an advisory panel appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In a more than 100page document advising the government on an economic recovery program that Ramaphosa is due to unveil today, the Presidential Economic Advisory Council said spending cuts could hold back growth and have other adverse consequences.

“We risk having nurses and doctors being unable to provide health services because of medicine stockouts, teachers paid but with no learning materials or classrooms, police officials grounded in stations because there is not enough petrol to go out on patrol,” the panel

said.

“This undermines the progressive realisation of socio-economic rights to health, education and basic services, and will reduce the efficiency of social spending, which is currently very poor, still further.”

RWANDA NODS CANNABIS PRODUCTION FOR EXPORT

IGALI - Rwanda has approved the cultivation and export of cannabis even as the use of the stimulant for medical or recreational purposes remains illegal in the country.

The government is targeting to grow its export earnings from the global cannabis market valued at the $345 billion according to analysts New Frontier Data.

The decision has caused confusion with some warning it could be detrimental to the youth if tough controls are not enforced.

Rwanda’s Minister of Health Dr Daniel Ngamije said that

despite the government’s intention to profit from the production and export of marijuana, its use in the country is banned.

“This will not give an excuse for drug abusers and dealers.

The law against narcotics is available and it will continue to be enforced,” Dr Ngamije said on state-run television Rwanda Broadcasting Agency

on Tuesday.

A Cabinet meeting, chaired

by President Paul Kagame, on Monday approved regulatory guidelines on cultivation, processing, and export of “high-value therapeutic crops.”

While The EastAfrican has yet to see the guidelines by press time, a source from the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) told the paper that

cannabis is the crop referred to. Last year, RDB had invited companies to bid for the development of medical cannabis in Rwanda with a focus on the export market.

The production or sale of cannabis is banned in Rwanda.

Doctors are banned from prescribing it as medicine, and doing so could land them in jail for two years and a fine of about Rwf3 million (about $3, 000), under Article 266 of the Penal Code. Use of the narcotics attracts a jail term of two years, while drug dealers face between 20 years to life in prison, and a fine of up to Rwf30 million ($30, 000).

Forex auction cheers CZI HARARE – The Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), Zimbabwe’s largest industrial lobby group, has lauded the positive effect of the forex auction market on the economy, saying the system has brought about exchange rate stability, predictability and curtailed inflation.

But importantly, CZI spelled out the cardinal rules that the authorities must follow as well as the pitfalls they need to avoid in order to sustain the current momentum and positive impact on the economy.

Stability of the exchange rate on the auction market, CZI said, has stopped the run of the open market exchange rate and similarly led to low and stable inflation.

The Zimbabwe dollar has recorded successive gains against the US dollar over the last three auctions, after depreciating exponentially from $25 to US$1 on being floated for the first time on the new auction system to reach its lowest point of around $83.39 to the green back.

Zimbabwe’s exchange rate appears to have reached optimum levels of stability in the market-driven auctions with the domestic currency continuing its recent trend of a minute firming, gaining one eighth of a percent in last week’s auction to $81.34.

The Zimbabwe dollar has

not traded below $80 since it hit $80.46 on August 4, 2020.

And the highest level to date of $83.39 on August 25 is increasingly appearing as the peak of the discovery process in the early auctions.

In effect, the auction rate is now the major determinant of the pricing across the markets, which was previously based on open market rates prior to the introduction of the auction system on June 23, 2020.

CZI also said the gap between the official and parallel market rates had narrowed significantly while access to foreign currency on the auction had greatly improved.

There has been certainty and predictability; coupled with transparency in the allocation of foreign currency by RBZ, CZI said the prevailing situation had shored up the confidence levels in the economy.

“The foreign currency auction has ushered in a breath of fresh air due to the many positives that the economy is deriving from the newly instituted foreign currency management system,” CZI noted.

To sustain and even improve the positive impact of the auction system, CZI noted that authorities needed to abide by some hard and fast rules, including avoiding interfering with the rate or forex allocations. – THE HERALD, Zimbabwe.

Kwacha depreciation inflates prices of goods and services Dear Editor,

HE Kwacha is our legal currency which has been depreciating against the major convertible currencies such as the United States dollar for instance.

The Bank of Zambia (BOZ) exchange rate of the Kwacha against the US dollar was K20.13 as at Monday October 12, 2020.

The Kwacha at various Bureau de Change in Lusaka is trading slightly above K21.00.

The recent depreciation of the Kwacha relative to the foreign currencies has led to the skyrocketing in the price of goods and services.

The prices of goods and services have generally more than doubled in the recent past, thereby making it difficult for the majority of the people to afford them. These

The small-scale entrepreneurs have not been spared either by the Covid-19 pandemic. The most affected business sectors are the hospitality and manufacturing, among others.

The low level of economic activities in our country entails that most goods and ser-

vices have to be imported.

When the country imports more goods than it exports, the country has to pay for the imported goods in foreign currencies notably the US dollar. Ultimately, there will be more demand for the dollar.

It is a well known fact that the majority of Zambians are

GOVERNMENT should know that to develop the country we should remember tZambia is an agricultural country as most areas have good water supply and fertiliser.

We have enough fertile land and good rain fall pattern so we can feed the entire southern and central Africa. Government through the ministries of Agriculture and Livestock to invest more. As a nation we can make money in agriculture and livestock than we can make on copper.

The other thing we have to look at is crop diversification. Crop diversification, once fully maximised will contribute positively to the wealth creation and boost people’s livelihood with addition to other crop that have the potential to generate income and stimulate to development.

AGRCULTURE Maize is one of the major crops grown in the country, but there is need for other crops to be recognised as well. We also need to focus more on millet, sorghum, rice, beans, soya beans, nuts, wheat and cassava.

Zambian has the potential not only to attain lasting food security but to become a regional agriculture hub and global exporter of processed agricultural products.

Agriculture presently contributes 15 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP). Therefore agriculture remains vital to employment and rural livelihoods as 70 percent of the country’s labour force works in agriculture.

That’s why the Ministry of Agriculture needs to encourage farmers to grow more food. The Lima credit programme started by ZNFU in partnership with Zambia National Commercial Bank (Zanaco) to address issues affecting small-scale farmers whose particular challenges includes, loans, fertiliser and improved seeds for the farm produce should be encouraged in all provinces.

The other one is Lima Chuma which means “Cultivating Prosperity,” is a holistic programme designed to empower the rural farmers. Only two things are needed to surpass crop production.

Firstly, disease preven-

tion and secondly the fight against stock theft should be taken seriously. Government should consider revising some policies in the livestock that negatively affect the country’s capability to export to the regional markets.

Addressing such policies will enable easy access to veterinary service among livestock farmers. The old policies in livestock have resulted in farmers suffering from escalating costs of vaccines and poor access to veterinary services translating in reduced livestock.

The disease situation in Zambia has led to limited export opportunities thereby reducing the potential contribution to foreign exchange.

Livestock farmers require support by putting in place appropriate and sustainable policies, support services, functional institutional are regulatory framework to increase livestock productively and quality of life through production.

1) Problems that hinder commercial beef production in Zambia.

A. Most traditional farmers keep animals for prestige and they are reluctant to sell.

B. Poor quality meat because the quality is not controlled.

C. Poor cattle management leading to over grazing in disease infected areas.

D. Most cattle farmers stay very far from the market centres.

2)

There are two measures that should be taken by the government and cooperating partners to improve beef production and supply in Zambia:-

A. Educating farmers on the importance of quality rather than quantity.

B. Veterinary officers should start going to assisting cattle owners and attending to animals.

C. Provision of markets and cold storage such as Zambeef and Kachema Suppliers.

Wusakile school borehole repaired

By ROGERS KALERO A TOTAL of K12, 000 was spent on buying a water pump, cables and other items at Jonken Primary School in Wusakile constituency in Kitwe, Member of Parliament Pavyuma Kalobo has said.

Mr Kalobo said the borehole stopped functioning, forcing residents in the area to starting consuming water from Jonken stream.

Mr Kalobo said he was working with Kitwe District Commissioner Chileshe Bweupe and District Education Board Secretary, Chrispine Nyungila to address the problem.

"Unity of purpose or team work is vital whenever we face challenges. Team work will always yield desirable results whenever we face challenges.

"On my own as MP, I would have not managed to repair this borehole. A total of K12, 000 has been spent on this work. This includes replacing the submersible pump and cables which were burnt," he said.

‘Don’t allocate plots near water bodies’ ALL local authorities must stop allocating pieces of land near water bodies, Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary, Bright Nundwe has directed.

Mr Nundwe said allocating plots near water bodies, such as rivers and streams, would contribute to manmade disasters which had affected many parts of the province.

He said stakeholders should work together in reducing disasters in the province.

Mr Numbwe said this yesterday in Ndola during the commemoration of International Day for Risk Disaster Reduction.

Mr Nundwe said he would not entertain allocation of plots in water logged areas because it had been costly on the treasury to manage disasters.

"I wish to emphasise the need for all stakeholders to work together if man-made disasters are to be avoided and save resources that could be channelled to other critical needs," he said During the event, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit donated mealie meal and maize to 22 boarding schools to go towards their feeding programmes.

OVERNMENT has been challenged to give proper guidance on operating hours for restaurants that also have liquor licences.

Bars and Night Clubs Owners Association of Zambia charged that a good number of restaurant owners who also

had liquor licences were operating beyond stipulated the hours.

Recently, Health Minister, Chitalu Chilufya, expressed concern that some bars and night clubs were not adhering to the covid-19 guidelines, among others, operating beyond stipulated hours.

The association secretary general, Mr Edmond Lifwekelo, complained that some sections of society deemed bars and night clubs owners to be

non-compliant with the hours if operation when there was a different story on the ground he was speaking in an interview in Kitwe.

"Before bars were allowed to open, restaurants that have liquor licences were allowed to sell liquor provided it came with a meal and these are the people operating beyond stipulated hours because they do not have a clear time to close their premises.

"Proper guidance on this

matter before re-opening the facilities would have helped," he said.

Recently, President Edgar Lungu announced that bars and night clubs would be operating on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 18:00 to 22:00 hours.

Mr Lifwekelo said there was urgent need for councils countrywide to sit down and see how best the matter could be resolved.

He said it was not too late to

have the matter resolved, stating that failure to do so would breed misunderstanding on the matter.

Mr Lifwekelo meanwhile called on Government to consider increasing the hours of operation for bars and night clubs, considering that the cases of Covid-19 were declining.

"In as much as we appreciate that the facilities were opened, we need more hours to help our members recover the monies they lost in the past few months that their facilities were closed," Mr Lifwekelo said.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE Dump Trump for a better American and a more peaceful world Dear Americans,

I

HOPE and trust that this letter will touch the heart of every American voter. As you go to vote this November 2020, apply yourself to the presentation of America as the land of freedom and economic prosperity.

One cannot keep out of mind the obvious wrong decisions and actions that President Donald Trump has committed during his administration which have endangered the lives of many Americans and further threatened world peace.

Those who worked with the president closely have testified in their writings.

(Fire and Fury in Trump’s White House; The room where it all happened). Dear Americans, Trump must be stopped. He has to be stopped at the polls this November.

I cannot choose a president for you. I cannot even judge and give a definite position on the president.

What I am doing through this letter is to show that certain actions and decisions of the president may not be good for America

Yes, one can comfortably immerse themselves into the local American environment, be in the comfort of billionaires, millionaires, political and business elites, reach out to select few global colleagues within the same comfort zone and lifestyle.

Yes, as global wealth expands, any leadership with a humane soul of caring for all human beings will use the leverage of national political leadership to put through a positive change to humanity, especially when the leadership is of an economically and politically powerful nation – which the US is today.

On his execution on January 30, 1649 King Charles I had this to say on the people; “For the people, and truly I desire their liberty and freedom, as much as anybody whomsoever, but I must tell you that their liberty and their freedom consists in having a government those laws by which their life and their goods, may be most their own.”

By failing to recognise the importance of working with the rest of the world on laws and institutions that keep America and the rest of the world in tandem, the Trump administration has put the lives of Americans and their goods at a razor edge where they can be lost in an instant.

The job losses and unemployment which have soared to the great depression levels is a case in point.

As he bade farewell to the presidency, George Washington also said; “Respect other nations.”

The Trump administration has completely ignored the wisdom of the founding president.

At this age and era of the modern state, the liberty of America is firmly tied to the liberty of the world, and wrapped up with this liberty is the security of all human beings and the protection of their human rights.

Each American should feel the moral obligation that lies on choosing a right president for

America, who will do the right decisions and actions for Americans and the right things for the world today. The experience over the last four years of Trump administration whether you look at violence at Charotteville or the trade war with China has taught us much.

President Trump is definitely not a right choice for Americans or the world, but the duty is for Americans to give us their choice.

On the September 25, 1919 President Woodrow Wilson said; there is one thing that the American people always rise to and extend their hand to, and that is truth of justice and liberty and of peace.

Thus to the words of Wilson, truth, justice, liberty and peace will come by voting Trump out of office and the truth, liberty and peace will start to flow in the world from America, with Americans and the rest of the world working together on global issues confronting the world today.

Even as we fight the coronavirus as a world; we have to do it together in solidarity; we have to work on a new economic order with and post Covid-19; a new global environment and an inclusive social, political, cultural, religious order which follows the World Health Organisation rules.

The key is, we have to work together as individuals and as nations. The one who does not want to work with others, is but a danger to all, and to the rest of the world.

President Trump does not want to work with others, not on the environment, not on the economy, not on justice for all.

The removal of Donald Trump from the presidency is a political and moral necessity. It will be a better America for Americans themselves and for the rest of us - a more peaceful world.

On February 5, 1850, Henry Clay stated that; “We shall stand condemned in our consciences, by our own constituents, by our own country.”

Henry Clay was making a case for the union of the USA. He was right.

May I add that we, as humanity will stand to be condemned by the future generations if we fail to see the obvious danger that Trump has brought to the modern state.

NVESTORS should not feel indifferent about investing in any of the economic sectors as their investment remains safe despite Zambia having elections next year.

The political process should

not make investors feel indifferent about investing in any of Zambia’s economic sector, assured Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister, Christopher Yaluma.

Mr Yaluma assured the French investors that their investment was safe even though Zambia would be holding elections next year.

The minister was speaking during the Zambia-France Virtual Investment Forum yesterday.

“Zambia has had in the past held peaceful elections and at no time did we as a country experience any form of political instability since we got independence in 1964. Therefore, you are free and safe in

Zambia at any given time!” he said.

Zambia’s Ambassador to France, Christine Kaseba-Sata, said the country was keen to see more French footprints.

Zambia Development Agency acting Director General, Mukula Makasa, said the country offered a number of incentives for investors.

CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST CONSULTING SERVICES TO CONDUCT A STUDY ON THE FEASIBILITY OF EXTENDING MANDATORY INSURANCE TO OTHER CLASSES OF INSURANCE TENDER REF: PIA/CN/010/2020 The Pensions and Insurance Authority is the regulatory and supervisory authority of the pensions and insurance industry. The Authority is established under the Pension Scheme Regulation Act no. 28 of 1996 (as amended by Act no. 27 of 2005). The Authority is empowered under Section 5 of the Pension Scheme Regulations Act No. 28 of 1996 (as amended) to formulate standards in the conduct of insurance business.

Background of the consultancy The Authority in meeting its mandate to increase penetration and access to insurance services sought to conduct a study to extend mandatory insurance to other classes of insurance. The Authority seeks to understand the insurance landscape in order to assess what classes would benefit from mandatory insurance as well as the impact of such an extension.

Purpose of the consultancy The purpose of this study is to assess whether there is need for regulatory intervention in the introduction of mandatory insurance taking into account the local insurance landscape and international best practices while considering the unserved markets.

Scope of the consultancy The study will involve but not limited to of the following: i. Review performance of the current mandatory motor third party (MTP) insurance as provided for in the Road Traffic Act No 11 of 2002. ii. As part of the above requirement, validation of industry data on client value (based on claims experience) on motor third party insurance for the last 5 years, is critical. iii. Identify and propose classes of insurance business that could form part of mandatory insurance, in addition to the current MTP. iv. Where mandatory classes of insurance business have been proposed, identify relevant legal framework and make recommendations where necessary for the purposes of achieving the desired outcomes. v. Design implementation plan, which must include consumer sensitization framework.

The Authority now invites eligible Consultant(s) with

requisite expertise to submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) for the provision of this service. Interested consultants are required to submit the following:1. Detailed Company profile including CV’s of three (3) Key staff demonstrating their technical capability to undertake the assignment. The lead consultant must have a minimum of Master’s Degree in finance, development studies, MBA or equivalent with minimum experience of not less than 10 years in the relevant field. The other proposed staff (Minimum 2) must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or professional qualification in finance or equivalent and the other Must be an actuary with experience in evaluating insurance business with experience of not less than five years in the relevant field. Submissions should include respective certificates.

2. Provide proof of having conducted assignments of a similar nature with at least 3 reputable clients in the last five years, preferably with reputable organizations. Attach respective recommendation letters. The consultant must demonstrate proven record of conducting feasibility studies; preferably on access, usage and performance (which MUST include client value) of financial products, especially in Pensions and Insurance sector.

3. Submit copies of Certificate of Incorporation, Valid Tax Clearance Certificate.

Empower more rural women - CCPC

PLAYERS in the financial sector can assist in saving the informal sector during the Covid-19 period by improving chances of rural women in accessing the Covid-19 relief which will support their businesses.

This is according to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) Executive Director, Chilufya Sampa.

The Bank of Zambia in April this year availed a K10 billion stimulus package to help businesses affected by the pandemic.

Mr Sampa warned that data from the FinScope which showed that nearly half of women in Zambia were financially excluded could distort the market and cripple an important part of the economy, the informal sector.

Mr Sampa said financial inclusion among rural women could save the informal sector.

He however observed that this called for an increase in the rate at which financial players brought on board women in rural areas to promote maximum inclusivity in the distribution of Covid-19 relief packages Mr Sampa stressed that women in rural areas faced serious hurdles in accessing Covid-19 relief support

Dundumwezi locals cautioned over tribal vote

IF you don’t vote for President Edgar Lungu in next year’s general election, don’t expect him to continue giving you development, PF national mobilisation committee member, Bizwell Mutale has told the people of Dundumwezi.

Speaking when he addressed village headmen and their subjects at Nabulangu grounds in Dundumwezi, Mr Mutale said for a long time the people in the region have not been voting for the ruling party because of the tribal lies that the UPND under the leadership of Hakainde Hichilema has been spreading.

Mr Mutale said the tendency by the people of Southern Province of voting on tribal lines was hurting the region’s development prospects.

“This time around it will be tit for tat, you don’t vote for him, don’t cry for development from a Government that you don't support and expect it to listen to you," he said.

He however, noted that the province was ripe for change from tribal voting,

for their businesses because they lacked access to formal financial services.

He was speaking during an episode of the Stanbic Anakazi Banking online conversations.

“What has come through from the women market is that in rural Zambia, women typically run microbusinesses that help support their families. However, most of these women remain financially excluded.

“As a result, it becomes nearly impossible for them to access relief packages that are available to other entrepreneurs in urban areas,” Mr Sampa said.

CCPC, Mr Sampa said, would work with various stakeholders to ensure that as many women as possible had accessed to financial services.

He said this would enable them not get by passed by the various interventions being put in place to help businesses navigate through the outbreak.

“We have been working with the Rural Financial Extension Programme (RUFEP) in trying to raise awareness of the importance of financial inclusion among women in rural areas to help change the narrative.

“We are engaging banks and mobile money providers in this quest,” Mr Sampa said.

Mr Mutale said the whole region and especially the people of Dundumwezi who did not vote for the PF in the last election have turned green and ready to move forward with the rest of the country by voting for the PF which was inclusive and of national character.

He called for collaborated effort between the ruling party structures and the grass root, adding that despite President Lungu visiting the region and not getting any vote from the people of Dundumwezi, the head of state and the party in power has initiated a number of developmental projects including the electricity and the construction of the Kalomo Dundumwezi road.

"The President did not get any vote here but he has been here twice to Commission two important projects that are benefiting you people. What more do you want the President to do for you to appreciate him," he said.

He said President Lungu and his Government has for a long time shown its commitment by giving the people of Dundumwezi and Southern Province in general electricity and a good road network but noted that it was saddening that despite all the effort, the region has continued to reject him.

UPND SALUTES KAMPYONGO OVER NRCS ISSUANCE

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) has welcomed Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo’s appeal to all stakeholders not to politicise the issuance of National Registration Cards (NRCs).

Southern province Information and publicity secretary, Neto Halwabala, said the appeal was timely as it would help in ensuring that the process was transparent.

Mr Halwabala said in an interview that the ministers had in the past made good policy pronouncements but they had not been implemented.

“We agree with the Minister of Home Affairs’ advice to the offices of District Commissioners that, their offices should be accessible to stakeholders who want to get information on the ongoing mobile issuance of NRCs,” he said.

Mr Halwabala said the UPND had been failing to access the time tables for the exercise from District Commissioners in the province.

“In some districts, they are areas that have been selected but do not have a lot of people and those areas where there are a lot of people are not targeted,” he said.

North-West gets $750m growth pledges

By JACKSON MAPAPAYI ABOUT US$750 million worth of investment pledges have been made to North-Western Province.

The pledges were as a result of the investment exhibition dubbed 'Expo North-West Zambia 2019' held in August last year.

This came to light during the First to Third Quarter of the Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) held in Solwezi.

Expo coordinator, Christopher Bwalya, said sectors of interest included agriculture and agro processing, carbon trading, forestry, energy, infrastructure development, border posts facility development and mining.

Mr Bwalya said a lot was happening in the agriculture and processing as well as in infrastructure development.

He said that under the agriculture and processing sector, about US$128.5 million had been pledged.

He said in Manyinga, a US$32 million plantation was coming up while in Mwinilunga a Kalene Fruit Canery plant was being set up under the auspices of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

The project, he said, was at 75 percent completion.

In Kalumbila, Mr Bwalya said that a horticulture plant was being set up by PG Farms while discussions to set up a One stop Border post at Kipushi border in Mushindamo was underway with a local company.

Meanwhile, provincial minister, Nathaniel Mubukwanu, urged the expo committee to follow up on all investment pledges.

He said Government’s desire was to see all investment pledges materialise so that people could start experiencing the benefit of the expo.

"The resources must be put in place to enable people responsible to follow up on pledges and commitments investors made so that the province can materialize tangible social and economic investment benefit for the people," he said.

Mr Mubukwanu said the overall objective of the Expo was to realise increased inflow of investment in various sectors and encourage investment.

North-Western Province last year held an investment exposition under the theme “unveiling the hidden treasures”.

On Monday, Mr Kampyongo said District Commissioners should provide leadership and address concerns from stakeholders in the ongoing mobile issuance of NRCs and also make their offices accessible.

The Minister said he did not want the exercise to be politicised to a level where officers on the ground were intimidated.

Travellers get Covid-19 awareness tips

By ANDREW MUKOMA THE Commuter Magazine has stepped up awareness campaigns targeting travellers after noticing laxity in adhering to Covid-19 health guidelines and regulations.

The Commuter Magazine indicated that most travellers on public service vehicles especially along the LivibgstoneLusaka route had stopped adhering to the guidelines such as sanitizing and masking up.

Liswaniso Mwanalushi, managing director at The Commuter Magazine, observed that people had become complacent in adhering to Covid-19 regulations.

Mr Mwanalushi said the sensitisation programme was meant to help travellers continue to follow the Covid-19 guidelines as the pandemic was still there and real.

He told the Daily Nation during an awareness campaign at the main bus station in Livingstone that his organisation

would continue reaching out to the people and educating them on the importance of following the guidelines.

"We have embarked on a programme of sensitizing travellers on the need to continue adhering to the Covid-19 guidelines given by the Ministry of Health. We are distributing face masks and fliers to commuters, bus crew and traders “We feel that travellers are at risk of contracting Covid-19 if the guidelines are not followed to the letter. It is for this reason that we will continue to educate them and where possible even give them face masks and education materials,” he said.

Mr Mwanalushi bemoaned the low levels of social distancing on the buses caused by the restrictive nature of the sitting arrangement was done.

He thanked the cooperating partners AIDS Healthcare Foundation for supporting the organization's efforts.

...as NRC mobile issuance exercise progresses well in Shang’ombo SHANG’OMBO District Commissioner, Max Kasabi says over two thousand people have obtained National Registration Cards under the ongoing mobile issuance of National Registration Cards (NRC’s) in the area.

Mr Kasabi expressed happiness that residents of Shang’ombo were satisfied with the exercise as one cannot do without a national identity document.

Mr Kasabi revealed that 2,400 people out of the eight thousand targeted number have been issued with NRC’s so far in the district.

He indicated that 1000 NRC’s issued are new registrations while 700 are card replacements.

Mr Kasabi revealed this when he conducted an inspection to the current areas the exercise is being conducted namely

in Mambolomoka, Liyuwayuwa, Sipuma Siwelewele and Mboiwa in the district.

Mr Kasabi described the exercise as calm saying the government is committed to rolling out the issuance of NRC’s in the district before the commencement of the voter Registration exercise.

Meanwhile Mambolomoka Ward Councillor, Malundu Malundu thanked the government for the gesture saying people need NRC’s to obtain governments social services.

He also appealed to the government to extend the mobile issuance of the NRC’s exercise dates.

Heavy rains blow school roof A DOWN POUR has blown off the roof of Chikonkwelo Secondary School in Kabompo forcing pupils to squat at a nearby church.

Kabompo District Commissioner Patrick Kasoka who visited the school yesterday with North Western Province Disaster Management and Mitigation unit (DMMU) Regional Coordinator, Paul Muyongo and District Education Board Secretary, Juma Phiri described the incident as unfortunate.

Mr Kasoka said the incident was unfortunate as the structure which was community led was the only standing building at the secondary school making it a major setback to the community and the leaners.

"It is sad and unfortunate that this has happened to the only structure at the secondary school as the school has had infrastructure challenges which include lack of classroom blocks and staff houses," he said.

Mr Kasoka said it will be a great relief if the people of Chikonkwelo can be given the needed support by the DMMU office to rebuild the structure as the incident has disturbed the learning process.

"We will be very grateful if the community is supported by the DMMU to have the structure rebuilt as soon as possible to help restore the community's effort in achieving this milestone," he said.

Speaking at the same event, DMMU Regional coordinator, Paul Muyongo advised the community to always try

and put up structures that are safe and able to withstand calamities.

"As DMMU we always encourage building back better so we need the community to set up environmentally friendly structures that are climate resilient.

"I would also urge the implementers of community projects to consult with all the available technocrats and institutions with various expertise," Mr Muyongo said.

He added that projects which are consultative allow the diverse expertise on the project to ensure little available resources not to go to waste.

"It is regrettable to have this experience, however, if community projects are consultative, it always gives room to avoid wastage of few available resources," Mr Muyongo said.

Meanwhile, Chikonkwelo Secondary School Head Teacher, Frederick Kambanji said about 200 pupils have been negatively affected as Covid-19 has also reduced the normal learning space and time.

Mr Kambanji said the displaced pupils are now squatting at the nearest CMML church and the primary school.

And District Education Board Secretary, Juma Phiri commended the teachers and the churches for such initiative.

"We want to commend you the teachers and the church for the initiative used during the whole calamity, we are really thankful,” Mr Phiri said.

AMBIA national soccer team coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic says there was nothing personal about him dropping defender Kabaso Chongo after Zambia lost 2-1 to Kenya.

Speaking during a press briefing, “Micho” said the experienced TP Mazembe defender was expelled from camp for technical reasons and not for personal reasons as insinuated by some people.

“Micho” said Chongo’s expulsion from the national team has nothing to do with the player not being disciplined as he comes from one of the best organised clubs in Africa.

The Serbian said the defender was expelled from the team as he failed to meet some characteristics of being a role model to the young players and his chemistry with Thandi Mwape in defence did not work well.

“What happened to the captain of the national team Kabaso Chongo was because of technical reasons, it has nothing to do with discipline as he is coming from a very organised club.

Fathi upbeat about new players

NAPSA Stars coach Mohamed Fathi is confident that the new players signed by the club will fit as the club prepares for both the CAF Confederations Cup and the MTN/FAZ Super Division.

NAPSA Stars have strengthened their squad with the acquisition of five players from Kenya Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively.

The “Pensioners” signed 2019/2020 Buildcon Football Club top scorer Chanda Mushili who has signed a threeyear permanent deal with the 2020/2021 CAF Confederation Cup debutants.

Mushili joins Chipolpolo and former Zanaco FC left back, Lawrence Chunga and Zimbabwean central defender Dauda Dennis who have signed twoyear and three-year permanent

Mohamed Fathi deals respectively.

NAPSA Stars also signed Kenyan striker Timothy Otieno who has signed a three-year permanent deal from Tusker FC. In an interview, Fathi said qualifying for the CAF Confederations Cup motivated the team to buy more players to strengthen their team.

“When we qualified for continental games we looked at how to beef up the team so we

brought Daudi, he has international experience playing for Zimbabwe and also to cover our players Luka Banda and Luka Nguni and also to have depth on the central defence.

“Lawrence Chungu is a national team player and he played with Zanaco so he has experience and he is a bit younger,” said Fathi.

“In midfield when you look at Collins Sikombe, we thought Jacob Ngulibu who played continental games with Nkana could assist Sikombe, this will also give us depth in midfield.”

Fathi, who was impressed with the way his players represented NAPSA at their various national teams is confident the new players will add value to their new club.

He said Otieno brings depth upfront because Napsa have been struggling in that department since Tapson Kaseba got injured.
