CHINESE TIES IDEAL ZAMBIANS and the Chinese must improve their interpersonal relationship between them to effectively eliminate intermittent clashes, some of which have ended fatally.

The peoples of the two nations must start by appreciating the differences in cultural patterns for them to successfully stem violent confrontations.

Language which is an integral part of culture has many a time been the source of conflict because communication has not been smooth.

The work culture of the citizens from the great Asian country is starkly different from the Zambian work culture.

Chinese are slanted towards labour intensive and long work hours in critical sectors such as construction, the reason why in some cases they work even in the night.

In construction, mining and other sites, Chinese stick to time and are often offended when an employee whiles away from an operating area during work hours.

Their intonation is sharp and high when issuing instructions or merely giving advice, which in many cases is disturbing to the Zambians especially an elderly employee at the hands of a younger Chinese.

During the construction of Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, a story emerged of some Zambian workers, who were kicked around after they were found resting under a shade during work hours.

The emphasis from the Zambia point of view was that of elderly men getting offended after being kicked in the groin and other parts of the body.

For the Chinese, it was offensive to them for a site worker to leave an operating area and lump one-self under a tree.

At the time, the raging debate seemed to be weighing against the AsianS because the locals isolated the “assault” from the entire episode and painted the Chinese in the negative.

In many cases, invective and tantrums were unleashed on the locals, who failed to live up to the hard-labour requirements.

But examining such clashes from a cultural standpoint helped to put matters into perspective, although in some cases there were extreme incidences.

Anger management was identified as an inherent problem on part of the foreign workers while the wages were not the most lucrative.

The Chinese often times drifted away from the dictates of the labour laws.

However, the work ethic among locals was not the best one would expect at a very busy construction site.

This illustration could be subsisting even now!

That said, the two peoples must immediately patch up their differences and appreciate one another’s cultural norms.

For a number of Zambians, they must improve their work culture and stick to the rules while the Chinese must adhere to the Zambian labour laws.

Zambians getting into Chinese firms ought to analyse the contracts instead of complaining about low pay when they have already appended their signature to the document.

The two peoples should not take the law in their hands and turn physical, but report irregularities to appropriate Government institutions.

Criminal matters must get to the police as soon as they are identified while labour law abrogation must be reported to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

Zambia and China have a long history of cooperation, the Asian country having constructed the 1, 860 kmlong Tazara railway line from Kapiri Mposhi to Dar-esSalaam.

The Chinese also constructed the 3.5 km Tuta Bridge, linking Central Province to Luapula and the magnificent 34-km Mongu-Kalabo road across the Barote flood plains undulating over 26 bridges.

Avoid protests, NAC advises artists Yaluma sues

By BENNIE MUNDANDO THE National Arts Council (NAC) has advised artists against participating in protests and other illegal activities as there are channels of airing their grievances.

In its guidance to artists dated June 10, 2020, NAC said it recognised the importance of their role in society and that as role models, they are a mirror of society reflecting the passions and concerns of the people.

NAC chairperson, Patrick Samwimbila said during the recent engagement meeting between the artists and the Minister of Tourism and Arts, Ronald Chitotela, artists requested for quarterly meetings with the government.

NAC said the minister, on behalf of Government, accepted this request

and that as a result, there was no need for anyone to engage in unnecessary antagonism because there were sufficient platforms for artists to be heard.

NAC called upon individuals, political parties, civil society organisations or any other interest groups who plan to hold demonstrations for their own agendas to stop hiding in the well-intended concerns aired by artists recently.

NAC appealed to all social media bloggers and commentators to desist from judging and demeaning any artist(s) who decided to meet with any Government officials to air their views.

NAC said artistes were responsible Zambians and they should be free to meet their leaders directly to dialogue and be part of the solution to the situations they desire addressed.

The organisation’s vice president, Mr Emmanuel Mulilo called on all Members of Parliament to support Bill 10.

Mr Mulilo said Bill 10 had a number of progressive clauses that would ensure equality and sustainable development in the country.

He pointed out that the mixed member

representation in parliament clause was one of the most progressive and would ensure the inclusion of those who had always been sidelined in decision-making.

Mr Mulilo said in an interview that the voice of the marginalised, the disabled, the youth and women was important in Government and that there was need for them to speak out in parliament.

He said Bill 10 was the last chance to ensure equality and that the disabled were banking on it.

Mr Mulilo appealed to UPND Members of Parliament not to walk out when the Bill is presented to parliament for second reading.

“Some of us have been left out in decision-making for a long time. That is the reason our plight is overlooked because we don’t have people to speak for us and we remain poor. We know for sure that Bill 10 is our last chance for inclusion.

If it flops then we are doomed,” he said.

Mr Mulilo urged MPs not to be swayed by their political party leaders from making the right decision.

He said the Bill was about the citizens of Zambia and not the ruling party.

Mr Mulilio said Bill 10 should be given chance to be scrutinised for the sake of the several progressive issues that were contained therein.

MINISTER of Commerce, Trade and Industry Christopher Yaluma, has sued some squatters on his land for allegedly building structures without his consent after bringing down a wall fence to the property.

Mr Yaluma who has dragged a Mr Chengo and other unidentified people to the Lusaka High Court claims that the respondents have continued to obstruct and deny him access to the land despite reporting the matter to Police and engaging them on several occasions.

He is now seeking an order of the court for the eviction of the said respondents and their agents from the land and an order restraining them from carrying out any activities, entering and being in occupation of the land covering Stand No. LUSAK/930060, Lusaka held under Certificate of Title No. 30846.

Mr Yaluma also wants costs and any other relief the court may deem fit.

In his affidavit in support of originating summons Mr Yaluma claimed that in 2016, he applied through the Lusaka City Council to be allocated a piece of land, now known as Stand No. Lusaka/930060, Lusaka.

He stated that at the time of the application, all the necessary procedures for one to be allocated a piece of land were followed and minutes and the outcome of those sittings were submitted with the Ministry of Lands for the subsequent processing of a Certificate of Title to the land.

HE country is losing millions of kwacha in revenue through cheating by mining companies that submit low grade assay, instead of the high quality minerals they export, Government has revealed.

The false samples are submitted to chemistry laboratory when they apply for export permits.

by Ministry of Mines Permanent Secretary Barnaby Mulenga who said the Government was determined to stop the drain by imposing tougher testing measures to stem the submission of low-grade samples to undervalue mineral exports and consequently, loss of revenue earned by the government through mineral royalty tax payment.

The measures would also eliminate the inconvenience of requiring clients to travel to Lusaka to submit samples each time they apply for a mineral

permit and to achieve orderliness in the processing of mineral export permit applications as opposed to the randomness currently prevailing.

It is the desire of the government that the ministry gains full oversight of the mineral supply and value chain to ensure effective monitoring of mineral production and exports.

Mr Mulenga said from July 1, this year, officers from the Ministry of Mines would be going to the sites and warehouses to check on the samples themselves instead of relying on those submitted by exporters.

Currently every client who applied for a mineral export permit submits a sample of the export consignment to the Geological Survey.

He explained that a Mineral Valuation Certificate of the entire mineral export consignment was prepared based on the laboratory results.

Mr Mulenga also said that it was on the strength of the valuation certificate that the ministry issued a mineral

export permit to the applicant.

This is done after the applicant had obtained a mineral royalty clearance certificate from the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

“Unfortunately, this practice has opened a window of opportunity for some mineral exporters to deliberately submit low-grade samples to the chemistry laboratory and this has resulted in undervaluing of mineral exports and consequently, loss of revenue earned by the government through mineral royalty tax payment.”

He said to facilitate the smooth transition from the current scenario to the new one, all exporters should ensure that their applications for export permits were received by the ministry at least one week before the officers’ sampling visit to each region.

Mr Mulenga said the applications should state clearly where the export consignments to be sampled would be located, with the applicants’ physical address and other contact details.

“A number of former BP employees have died without getting their benefits from Saturnia Pension Fund despite a Supreme Court ruling,” he said.

And Mr Mumbi said those who were involved in the privatisation process must never comment on the country’s economic situation because they were the ones who had put the country in the current economic crisis.

Mr Mumbi said the economy was in this situation because of the plunder by some of the people who were involved in the privatisation process.

He said in an interview yesterday, the country’s economy would had been stable if those involved in the privatisation did not plunder the assets.

Mr Mumbi said the economic situation was worsening because the current government had already found it weak.

Our economy, he said, was in this situation because selfish individuals plundered the country’s assets and government should institute a probe to get to the bottom of this.

Mr Mumbi called on the Patriotic Front government to take keen interest and probe the privatisation scandal because it had put the economy in the worst situation.

“All those people who were involved in the privatisation of state property have contributed to the downfall of the economy. A loss is a loss regardless of how many years ago it happened, this is why you hear people who do not understand about the economy would say that Levy Mwanawansa improved the economy.

Mr Mwanawasa never improved the economy but we had a debt relief and that was a worldwide campaign by a lot of organisations and individuals asking for a debt forgiveness which came when Mwanawansa was in office,” Mr Mumbi said.

And he also said those who plundered the state assets must never talk about the ailing economy because they were responsible for the present economic woes.

THE government intends to open access rules and regulations to allow private sector players to access the railway system as long as they meet the conditions prescribed, Government spokesperson Dora Silya said in a statement yesterday.

THE rail system will be opened up to enhance private sector participation through the open access regime in order to develop and sustain the sector following a cabinet approval to table the Railways Bill 2020 in Parliament.

Currently, railway financing entirely depends on the government, Ms Siliya said.

“With increased investment in the road infrastructure in the country, especially, since 2013, road transport has been dependent upon for transportation of goods and services and this has increased the cost of maintaining the roads, therefore the need, for a renewed policy to

facilitate infrastructure development for rail,” the statement read.

In the Imalyo ward byelection, Mr Moobola declared Mr Musole Kamocha of the PF the winner with 615 votes while Mr Poice Simasiku of UPND polled 494.

Mr Namasiku Namasiku of National Restoration Party closed the door with 111 votes.

PF Secretary-General Davies Mwila said the victory symbolised that the ruling party had become popular in all parts of the country.

Mr Mwila said in Lusaka yesterday that the people voted for the ruling party because of its development agenda.

GOVERNMENT must prioritise locals in all tenders to empower them for the economy to flourish as the money will continue to circulating within the country, former Islamic Supreme Council president Suzyo Zimba has said.

Mr Zimba said local contractors were capable of handling huge contracts once they were given by the government.

He said in an interview yesterday, Government must ensure that at least 60 percent of the contracts were given to locals to help to improve their operations.

Mr Zimba feel that the country had well-trained contractors who were capable of putting up modern infrastructure instead of prioritising the foreign ones.

He said if Government awarded more contracts to the local people it would help them improve their operations as well as contribute to economic growth of the country.

Mr Zimba observed that giving more contracts to the foreigners would deny the country the much-needed revenue as money would be going out.

OVERNMENT has encouraged mechanised gold mining to mop up the required 40, 000 tonnes this year.

Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development Permanent Secretary, Barnaby Mulenga, said the model would enable the country meet the required target this year.

He admitted that panning only where miners get gold from alluvial was not effective enough, hence the need for mechanised mining.

Mr Mulenga was reacting to calls by the Small-Scale Miners Association of Zambia president Kunda Chani for the introduction of mechanised gold mining for the country to get enough resource.

Mr Chani told the Daily Nation recently that gold panning would enable the country to mobilise required target yearly.

Mr Mulenga however said the model required safety in order to safeguard the lives of the miners.

He said in an interview yesterday that the miners would be required to go underground to mine the resource for which safety was a must.

He said whether people were engaged in small-scale or large-scale mining safety must be a priority.

Mr Tonga said it was clear that youths planning protests were being sponsored by political vultures that are bent on causing unnecessary tension in the country.

He said instead of protesting, young people in the country should ask President Edgar Lungu's Government and Parliament, to stiffen laws on corruption by enacting the non-bailable law against all corruption cases.

"It's sad that some youths wants to hide behind Facebook to agitate anarchy in the country,� Mr Tonga said.

He said youths in the country should learn to use formal platforms to air their concerns than making unnecessary noise with potential to sway the citizens from real issues.

Tonga said the law enforcers should not wait until there was anarchy in the country before acting on those bent on causing problems in the nation.

Chongwe Municipal Council director of engineering, Peter Banda, said in an interview that the works had stalled because of technical reasons He was reacting to concerns raised by residents on the works which have dragged since 2018.

He noted that the road projects which were being done around the CBD in 2019 had partly led to a temporary suspension of street lighting initiative to allow the contractor to work freely.

Mr Banda however disclosed that the engineering department had decided to test the lighting which had been installed so far to assess the quality of works and also to see how the system would work.

The project, he said, would be completed by the end of this year as they were at 35 percent of completion point.

He noted that all the poles were already at the council and were only waiting to be mounted and fitted.

And Chongwe Central ward councillor, Juvenalis Mulimbika, observed that the works done so far were impressive and as such the council must be commended.

Farm workers thwart robbery ‌suspect suffers gunshot wound

By PETER MALASHA A BUSINESSMAN and some farm workers in Mkushi put up a spirited fight to truck down bandits, who had snatched a vehicle which they used in a robbery.

The six bandits grabbed a Toyota Hiace bus from a businessman, Edward Machaya in Kapiri Mposhi and drove it to Mkushi where they staged yet another robbery at a farm.

They hauled 20 bags of fertiliser valued at K12, 360 from Mkushi's Sheply Farm after beating up and tying one of the two guards on duty with a cloth on the mouth and abandoned him on the road.

The other security guard had escaped.

Central Province Police Commissioner, Chola Katanga, confirmed the robbery which happened between 22:00 and 24:00 hours on Monday.

He said the bandits who were driving a Fun Cargo had snatched a Toyota Hiace in Kapiri.

The six criminals then stormed Sheply Farm in Mkushi and attacked two guards on duty, identified as Alfred Bwalya and Richard Katongola.

Mr Katanga explained that during the robbery, one of the guards Mr Bwalya was beaten up and tied with a cloth on the mouth and abandoned on the road.

He said after the attack, the criminals stole 20 x 50kgs bags fertiliser valued at K12, 360 which was in the warehouse at the farm.

However, the farm manager identified as Elias Zimba, together with other workers pursued the bandits.

In the process, they met Mr Machaya 38, of Lubuto area who told them them that the same criminals with the Fun Cargo had also stolen his Toyota Hiace registration number ALH 6890 valued at K60, 000 from his driver Abiud Chendo.

The traditional leader said President Lungu was determined to develop the country and this was evident through infrastructure development countrywide.

Senior Chief Mboroma said in an interview that he was happy that the Fiwila-Mulungwe road via Mboroma was being constructed.

He said since 1974 when he was enthroned as chief, he has never witnessed the infrastructure development taking place in the area.

Senior Chief Mboroma said so far he was gratified by the road works being carried out by Sino Hydro a Chinese firm constructing the road under rural connectivity programme. "l am happy with road works being done by Sino Hydro Company from Fiwila Mission to Mulungwe. The standard of work is good. The road is of economic value and will induce social-economic development," he said.

He added that not only

would it bring about economic development but would also facilitate transportation of farm inputs and other goods.

Senior Chief Mboroma also said the mining industry would be boosted because investors would be attracted to invest to the area.

A good road network, he said, was cardinal to investment.

Ultimate Insurance sues 3 former shareholders

By CHINTU MALAMBO ULTIMATE Insurance Company Limited has sued three of its former shareholders and a businessman for an order that the consent settlement order that was signed between it and a purported law firm be set aside as it was fraudulently executed.

The insurance firm has cited Chanda Katotobwe, Justine Phiri, Klein Syampongo and Maybin Silavwe.

It is asking the Lusaka High Court for an order to set aside a consent judgement purportedly signed by the defendants and the Insurance Company limited dated May 31 2019 under cause no. 2019/HPC/0227.

It wants the court to declare that Imasiku and company did not act with the authority from the plaintiff and as such had no authority to execute such consent order.

The insurance company is also seeking an order for general damages for inconvenience, costs for and incidental to the proceedings.

In its statement of claim, the company stated that Phiri, Syampongo and Silavwe were at all material times shareholders of Ultimate Insurance Company Limited while Katotobwe was a business executive.

It stated that on May 31 last year, the defendants purportedly entered into a consent settlement order with Ultimate Insurance Company Limited in case no 2019/ HPC/0227.

The insurance company stated that the said consent settlement order was not signed by or on behalf of it neither was the plaintiff made aware of such an action.

It stated that a law firm that purportedly signed on behalf of Ultimate namely Messrs Imasiku and Company did so without the authority of the plaintiff.

Ultimate stated that the consent settlement order was fraudulently signed as the plaintiff would aver at trial that the law firm which sued on his behalf did not exist at the time the order was signed. “The defendants have now procured the assistance of a police officer namely Lemmy Shonga to obtain the court record from the High Court purportedly for the purpose of investigations so that the fraud on the said record could be covered up. The said police officer has in other connected matters used his authority as a police officer to aid the defendants in civil matters," the Ultimate stated.

The company alleged that particulars of the offence were that the plaintiff did not authorise the signing of the said consent settlement order and that Ultimate was never served the said process.

Ultimate stated that Imasiku and Company which signed the said consent settlement order did not exist at the time the order was signed and had no authority from the plaintiff to execute such consent order on its behalf.

E have no quarrel with the Constitutional Amendment Bill number 10 because it will benefit the majority Zambians, UNIP Southern Province chairman Robert Mukengami has said.

Captain Mukengami said that those wanting Bill 10 to fail were only doing so because of their political interests and beliefs.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Capt Mukengami said that Bill 10 must be allowed to go through and be supported by well meaningful Zambians.

"UNIP as a party has no quarrel with Bill 10. All what we are saying is let the people of Zambia for the first time enact a Constitution that they feel they have participated in freely.

"When we are looking at Bill 10, let us not put political interests first... which political party I come from but think of the people of Zambia, our masters," Capt Mukengami said.

He said that putting political party interest when dealing with such a national document would only derail the country's progress.

‘Enhance women, youth participation in politics’

ZAMBIA should enhance youth and women's participation in politics throughout the electoral cycle as the country heads for the general elections next year.

Kenmax Hamoonga, the losing Parliamentary candidate for Dundumwezi in Kalomo in the 2016 general elections, observed that young people and women were often excluded from the list of political candidates.

In an interview in Kalomo, he said politics was typically regarded as a space for politically experienced men while women are often disadvantaged in accumulating experience to run for office.

He added that the young people were systematically marginalized because of their age and projected as people who lacked experience.

However, Mr Hamoonga who stood as an independent candidate against UPND's Edgar Sing'ombe in 2016, said time had come for the scenario to be changed.

Meanwhile, Mr Hangooma has joined UNIP and declared himself ready to re-contesting the Dundumwezi Parliamentary seat next year .

SA Express escapes liquidation for now JOHANNESBURG - South African state airline SA Express escaped liquidation on Tuesday after a judge granted a three-month delay in liquidation proceedings, giving the government more time to clarify its plans for the domestic and regional carrier.

SA Express, a different business to national flag carrier South African Airways (SAA), was placed under provisional liquidation in April after its administrators said they could not secure funding for turnaround efforts.

But in papers filed in the High Court and seen by Reuters, lawyers for the administrators asked to delay a final ruling on whether it should be liquidated, saying there was a possibility the government could fund a restart of the airline’s operations.

They cited a letter from the state enterprises ministry that referred to an allocation of 164 million rand ($10 million) in the financial year that began in April, subject to certain conditions. The lawyers said that delaying the hearing would allow “national executives to roll out proper plans.” It would also prevent the airline from losing its operator’s certificate and air licence, which could help creditors to recover some money, they added. – REUTERS.

JOHANNESBURG Financially, 2020 will go down as the worst year in the history of aviation, according to Alexandre de Juniac, director general and CEO of the International Air Transport Association.

On average, every day of this year will add $230 million to industry losses, he said during a webinar on Tuesday. About 10 percent of the world’s GDP is from tourism and much of that depends on air travel.

IATA’s financial outlook for the global air transport industry, also released on Tuesday, forecasts expected to losses totally $84.3 billion in 2020 for a net profit margin of -20.1 percent.

Revenues are expected to fall 50 percent to $419bn from $838bn in 2019. In 2021, losses are expected to be cut to $15.8bn as revenues rise to $598bn.

It means that - based on an estimate of 2.2bn passengers this year - airlines will lose $37.54 per passenger.

Patriotism demands objectivity

PATRIOTISM means putting the country first before other secondary considerations such as political or religious affiliations.

During the pro-independence era, patriotism meant fighting the colonial masters and in turn guarantee the natives exclusive political power.

That narrative is now gone since we have now politically become independent. Even amongst our own brothers, there are people who are determined at all costs to sell Zambia to the highest bidder the same way it was done during the privatisation era.

Being patriotic does not entail becoming serial haters of our long cherished democratic tenets. This brings into picture, the sudden change of narrative by UPND supporters regarding Brian Bwembya (B Flow).

In the course of last week, social media was showered with all sorts of praises which were directed at Mr Bwembya and other morally bankrupt minions such as Chellah Tukuta.

It was apparent that the temporary praise singers of Mr Bwembya were people who have waged aerial hatred against the President and the PF government. For them, they desperately need to use every available opportunity to sway public debates to take a certain twist.

Now that B Flow has been courteous enough to have a closed door meetings, the same people who cheered him have risen and accused him of being an opportunist.

What is good for the goose is also good for the gander. This double tongue approach by the opposition online bloggers shows that the opposition have no defined political direction and ideology. Their ideology is creating a hostile debate and negative energy in the country.

Like the PF Media Director Mr Sunday Chanda has said, the party cherishes freedom of expression and association. If it is freedom of expression and association to criticise the government of the day, it should be freedom to associate with those in the corridors of power.

Above all, Mr Bwembya is a Zambian who has every right to enjoy his birthright like any other Zambian. It is therefore unfair to criticise him on the basis of interaction.

We therefore wish to assure B Flow of our unflinching support irrespective of whether he is critical or in support of our political standpoint. PF values political freedoms and this is evident from the mature conduct of members in this case.

IT’S NOT ABOUT NUMBERS, IT’S ABOUT SUBSTANCE AND VALUE Dear Editor, THE behaviour of some Facebook youth lumpens like Chellah Tukuta and others like him is sickening.

While it is their democratic right to express themselves on national issues which they do not understand, the authorities should not tolerate such useless behaviour for the sake of protecting the peace we have enjoyed for years.

The notion that because youths are in the majority in this country, should not be used as an excuse to cause anarchy. Youths should realise that it’s not about numbers but it’s about substance and value.

My advice to the youth is that to be trusted by the elderly that they are ready to be leaders of today and not leaders of tomorrow, they have to show in their small way that indeed they are ready for the leadership mantle by engaging in productive activities.

Today, it is difficult to see the causes of youths because they don’t inspire confidence but spend their precious time conspiring on

maligning those in authority.

One thing they should quickly realise is that there is no way good policies on them will be made without them, therefore spending time insulting those in authority and not engaging them and demand their role in nation building is an exercise in futility.

The PF as a party and its government are always willing to work with responsible women and youths for the betterment of the larger population.

Of course like every responsible organisation, the PF can’t force youths who are bent on evil to work with them. It’s clear that the PF government means well for the youth, all that youths need to do is to acquire the necessary skills and those with ideas can engage the PF secretariat or better still the ministry responsible for the kind of project they want to engage.

I can assure them that either the PF Secretary General or the minister responsible will help to push the idea for onward funding.

Women want Bill 10 enacted

By JACKSON MAPAPAYI WOMEN Vision 2020 has appealed to Members of Parliament to support article 47.2 in the Constitutional Amendment Bill 10 to change the electoral system to mixed member system.

The organization’s representative in the North-Western Province, Ms Alina Nyikosa, said some articles in Bill 10 were progressive hence the need for MPs to support them.

She said her organisation was in support of Bill 10 especially article 47.2 which calls for the implementation of the 50/50 men and women participation in decision-making.

Ms Nyikosa said the article was a great window for changing to an Electoral System that would bring more women in Parliament.

“We therefore demand an inclusive Parliament. The young, the differently abled persons, women and men moving together in national development,” she said.

She was speaking when a group of women from her organisation presented a petition to the NorthWestern Province Permanent Secretary, Willies Mangimela, at the provincial administration.

Ms Nyikosa also extended the appeal to traditional leaders to support Bill 10.

In response, Mr Mangimela said the process was gender responsive as it promoted equity and balance in the country.

“And this message will be delivered to our provincial minister,” he said.

Mr Mangimela said the Bill was inclusive as it tended not to leave anyone behind and called on MPs to support the Bill.

Parley confirms June 23 presidential re-run LILONGWE - Malawi’s parliament has endorsed June 23 as the date for the presidential election re-run after a court annulled last year’s vote over irregularities, a lawmaker said.

The election had handed President Peter Mutharika a second term, but with just 38.5 percent of the vote.

The country’s Constitutional Court overturned the result, citing “grave” and “widespread” irregularities, including the use of correction fluid on ballot papers.

It ordered that fresh election be held within 150 days of its February 3 ruling. The electoral commission had initially set July 2, but later brought the date forward to June 23.

Legally parliament had to validate the new polling date.

Meantime, a new electoral commission headed by Chifundo Kachale was sworn-in on Tuesday to organise the new vote, after the top court also ordered an investigation into the conduct of the previous one. – AFP.

(ii) Secretion of Saliva: This is carried out by salivary glands. Saliva is a mixture of water, mucus, the enzymes salivary amylase and lysozyme in a slightly alkaline medium. (iii) Mixing Food with Saliva and formation of Bolus :While food is being chewed, the tongue mixes it with saliva. Later, the tongue works with the palate (top of the mouth) to roll the chewed food up into a round semi solid mass called a bolus, in readiness for swallowing.

Swallowing and Peristalsis Ø Swallowing is the passage of food or liquids from the mouth to the stomach through the oesophagus. During swallowing, the food bolus moves by a process known as peristalsis. Ø Peristalsis is the alternate contraction and relaxation of circular and longitudinal muscles in a wave-like manner in order to move food along the alimentary canal. Constipation: Difficult defaecation due to hardness and dryness of faeces, resulting from insufficient roughage and water in diet.

Stomach Ulcers: An ulcer is defined as an open sore that produces toxic matter. Stomach ulcers may result from over-production of pepsin and hydrochloric acid.

Piles (haemorrhoids): This is a condition where the veins in the rectum become swollen and eventually burst causing pain and blood-stained stool. It may be caused by frequent constipation.

• There is a space between the incisors and premolars called the diastema. It is used to manipulate food by separating the freshly eaten food from the one that is already being chewed. c) Dentition in an Omnivore Omnivores are animals that feed on both flesh and vegetation e.g. human beings. Their dentition is not specialised for any kind of diet.

Causes, signs and symptoms of gum disease and tooth decay Tooth Decay Tooth decay also called dental decay or dental caries, this is a condition where the enamel of teeth is dissolved (corroded) by organic acids produced by fermentation of sugars by bacteria in the mouth forming cavities in the teeth.The condition may be treated by filling the tooth in with cement or having a tooth extraction.

Prevention of Tooth Decay • Brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste after every meal • Avoiding intake of sugary foods • Regular visits to the dentist i.e. at least twice every year (once every six months) • Taking foods that are rich in calcium, phosphorus and vitamins C and D • Using dental floss to remove food particles from teeth • Using teeth properly by avoiding using them for opening bottle tops and the like as this may crack the enamel.

Ø Temporal Storage of Food: Liquids can stay in the stomach for up to 30 minutes; carbohydrates are kept for about one hour; proteins and lipids stay up to 2 hours.

Digestion in the Duodenum Ø The duodenum receives digestive juices from the liver and the pancreas. The liver secretes bile which is temporarily stored in the gall bladder and carried to the duodenum by the bile duct. Emulsification is the break down of large drops of fats into small droplets. Ø The pancreas secretes pancreatic juice which contains sodium hydrogen carbonate, trypsin, lipase and pancreatic amylase.Trypsin breaks down proteins to form peptides. Lipase breaks down fat molecules to fatty acid and glycerol.Pancreatic amylase breaks down starch to form maltose.

Digestion in the Jejunum Ø This secretes Intestinal Juice (succusentericus) which contains Lactase, maltase, sucrase and peptidase. Lactase breaks down lactose to glucose and galactose. Maltase breaks down maltose to glucose. Sucrase breaks down sucrose to glucose and fructose. Peptidase breaks down peptides to amino acids.Digestion is completed in the jejunum.

WHO says Covid-19 patients most infectious when they first feel unwell

GENEVA - Studies show people with the coronavirus are most infectious just at the point when they first begin to feel unwell, World Health Organisation (WHO) experts said on Tuesday.

This feature has made it so hard to control spread of the virus that causes Covid-19 disease, but it can be done through rigorous testing and social distancing, they said.

“It appears from very limited information we have right now that people have more virus in their body at or around the time that they develop symptoms, so very early on,” Maria van Kerkhove, a WHO epidemiologist and technical lead on the pandemic, told a live session on social media.

Preliminary studies from Germany and the United States suggest that people with mild symptoms can be infectious for up to 8-9 days, and “it can be a lot longer for people who are more severely ill.” she said.

Earlier, some disease experts questioned her statement on Monday that transmission of Covid-19 by people with no symptoms is “very rare”, saying this guidance could pose problems for governments as they seek to lift lockdowns.

Van Kerkhove, citing disease-modelling studies, clarified on Tuesday that some people do not develop symptoms, but can still infect others.

Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO’s top emergencies expert, said that the novel coronavirus lodges in the upper respiratory tract, making it easier to transmit by droplets than related viruses such as SARS or MERS, which are in the lower tract.

“That means you could be in the restaurant feeling perfectly well and start to get a fever, you are feeling ok, you didn’t think to stay home, but that’s the moment at which your viral load could be actually quite high,” he said.

Ryan added: “And it’s because the disease can spread at that moment that the disease is so contagious, that’s why it spread around the world in such an uncontained way, is because it’s hard to stop this virus.”

AMBIAN coach Honour Janza’s dream of leading a team in the CAF Inter-Club competition is nearing a reality following the motion by the Premier League of eSwatini Board of Governors to nullify the 2019/20 season.

According to a special meeting held on Tuesday, the nullification of the league with

most teams remaining with eight rounds of fixtures would mean increasing teams to 16 and no relegation.

With Mbabane Swallows placed second on the 14- team log standings with 37 points, eight points adrift Young Buffaloes, Janza is expected to make his debut touchline appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup should the motion pass.
