HAPPY FARMERS THE nation must indeed be cheered by the assurance coming from farmers in Central Province through their traditional leaders – that they will grow more maize.

The farmers feel motivated to produce more maize during the coming seasons because of the prompt payments made by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

The chiefs were happy that Government through the FRA had paid the small-scale farmers early for the maize.

Chief Shaibila speaking for the 10 chiefs who met President Edgar Lungu in Mkushi yesterday said farmers were motivated to work even harder next season.

Under the new payment system introduced this year, the FRA has been paying farmers on the spot after doing all the paper work.

This has also put to shame the habitual critics of the country’s agricultural policies, particularly maize farming and paying farmers.

Farmers have this year been spared from going through the annual agony of waiting for payments long after they had delivered their maize produce to the FRA depots.

This improved system has also thrown briefcase buyers off balance because a farmer has been able to sell the maize at a higher price to the FRA than what they were offering.

The briefcase buyers had entered the market expecting that the FRA would conduct “business as usual – collect the maize and pay later.”

The assurance by the farmers through their chiefs contrasts sharply with their commercial counterparts.

Just recently, commercial farmers threatened to reduce or abandon maize growing because of what they claimed were the government’s contradictory policies – not allowing maize exports until the nation was food secure.

While we appreciate the massive contributions that commercial farmers make to the nation’s economy, it is important to equally pay attention to the small-scale farmers.

The nation can only claim to be food secure when peasant farmers have grown enough maize for consumption in their barns after selling excess produce to the FRA and other buyers.

It is clear that the government is on the right path to ensure that farmers’ needs are met as highlighted by the chiefs.

The chiefs commended Government for the early distribution of inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) for the 2020/2021 farming season.

“We are really happy for the early flag-off and distribution of FISP for the coming season for that we say keep it up as you said it will never occur again,” Chief Shaibila said.

Farmers are clearly in a win-win situation should Government continue on this trajectory – deliver inputs early and assure farmers of prompt payments.

As Chief Shaibila, who is also Council of Chiefs provincial vice chairman, said the early payment of farmers had motivated them to prepare the fields early in readiness for the next farming season.

OVERNMENT will soon take appropriate action regarding the privatisation process in which national assets were plundered, Vice President, Inonge Wina, has said.

Ms Wina said the matter was of national interest and needed to be addressed for the best interest of the nation.

She was responding to a question during the vice president question time yesterday from Muchinga Central MP, Howard

Kunda.

Mr Kunda wanted to know whether Government was considering instituting a commission of inquiry to probe what transpired during the privatisation programme.

The Vice President said those who were mandated to oversee the privatisation process were supposed to show high level of professionalism by declaring interest as they were handling the privatisation process.

“The negotiating team was expected to show high levels of integrity, transparency and professionalism since they were

handling national assets.

“So, Mr Speaker the people of Zambia are debating this matter and their Government will find a solution to this national discussion. Government has not yet decided the mode of moving forward on this matter,” Mrs Wina said.

She said it was prudent that necessary action was taken to ensure that the matter at hand was addressed.

Ms Wina said those who mishandled the privatisation process had left the country in misery and the people in destitution.

‘Energy policy will facilitate diversification’

By NOEL IYOMBWA THE national energy policy 2019 goals will promote diversification of energy sources, the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has said.

ERB Engineer - Electricity, Humphrey Ngwale, said the organisation would support projects that were aimed at using renewable energy sources.

He said that ERB had been proactive involved in promoting renewable energy and that so far the independent power producers were making strides to the diversification of energy sources.

Mr Ngwale was speaking during a conducted tour of

the 34 megawatts plant yesterday at the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ).

He said that Ngonye Solar Plant was awarded the contract in 2016 and started operating in 2019 adding that so far the performance of the company was impressive.

Mr Ngwale noted that the energy regulator would continue to support initiatives aimed at promoting development of renewable energy sources.

Meanwhile, Ngonye Solar Plant Manager Felix Chama said the power generating company was in Zambia to stay. The firms, he said, would continue to contribute to the country’s economic

growth through the supply of power to Zesco.

Mr Chama disclosed that the company was taking part in bids by the Indusstrial Development Corporation to construct many other solar power plants in the country.

Ngonye PhotoVoltaic Solar plant located in the Lusaka MFEZ is a joint venture between the Zambian government through IDC and Enel Green Power Company a subsidiary of Italian power giant Enel.

The company has since entered into a 25-year power purchase agreement with Zesco Limited where the power company was buying power at seven cents per Kilowatt.

Govt urges mines to increase output

By SILUMESI MALUMO GOVERNMENT has urged players in mining industry to increase mineral production and ultimately contribute to the growth of the mining sector.

Mines and Mineral Development Minister, Richard Musukwa, said mining houses should embrace the new normal and increase production.

The minister was speaking yesterday when Rio Tinto Country Manager Evans Kanche paid a courtesy call on him says a statement

issued by Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development Public Relations Officer Lucy Shawa.

Mr Musukwa said low mineral production had contributed to the weakening of the Kwacha.

He said it was prudent that mining houses found innovative ways of improving production.

He said an increase in mineral production would help mitigate depreciation of the Kwacha and assured the mining sector of Government's full support as a major stakeholder in the industry.

And Mr Kanche said works on the four projects Rio Tinto planned to execute this year, which delayed because of Covid-19, had resumed in Solwezi and Mufulira.

Mr Kanche said works at Ngala in Mufulira commenced on September 1, 2020 which included conducting gravity and aircore while diamond drilling would be done soon.

He added that the projects which would cost about $10 million would continue and measures had been put in place to ensure safety among workers amid Covid-19.

Nevers loss denting real MMD - Nakacinda “NEVERS Mumba and his candidate in the Lukashya Parliamentary By-Election has embarrassed and put the name of, the MMD, into disrepute,” says Raphael Nakacinda.

Mr. Nakacinda says genuine Movement for Multi-Party Democracy members are upset that Dr. Mumba decided to go against their wish and field a candidate whose results have been embarrassing to the MMD as a party.

He says as a party that is in an alliance with the Patriotic Front, it was not necessary to go against the National Executive Committee that resolved not to field a candidate but support alliance partners the PF. He said Dr. Mumba’s candidate, Mr Christopher Kabwe, who got 114 votes is an indication of Dr. Mumba’s failed leadership and hence the calls for a Convention become so eminent than ever.

Mr. Nakacinda who is a nominated Member of Parliament, adds that the best thing Dr. Mumba can do in the wake of the 114 votes his candidate got is to resign and allow a people accepted leadership to take over.

Mumana Pleasure Resort gutted

FIRE yesterday gutted part of Mumana pleasure resort on Great East Road in Lusaka destroying property.

(LCC) public relations manager, George Sichimba, said the fire was reported around 14:00 hours and that when fire brigade arrived at scene they found the restaurant

section engulfed in flames. The fire brigade managed to contain the fire from spreading to other sections of the building, especially the nearby filling station.

Mr Sichimba said

preliminary investigations indicated that the fire was caused by flying embers (burning pieces of wood or grass) from the bush fire. “The embers fell onto the grass thatched roof of the

restaurant which led to the inferno. The restaurant section has been extensively damaged but no other sections of the building has been affected, “he said.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Mr Hichilema said, “Recently, the nation witnessed an age-old political debate that was instigated by a politician sponsored

by Mr. Edgar Lungu and the Patriotic Front, and given unlimited media coverage on my role in privatisation, over a matter that has since been handed over to the courts for determination. This was a malicious campaign meant to pit me against the Zambian people.”

However Mr Ngulube urged Mr Hichilema to stop using Facebook and to come on radio and explain so that people can have an opportunity to ask him questions.

He said the UPND leader was being jittery and acting funny trying to threaten everyone who comments on privatisation.

He said there is no way the court can stop any Zambian from commenting on the matter because that would be unconstitutional.

“We all have freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution. We have all rights to comment all matters of affecting the nation and privatisation is one of those issues affecting the nation,” he said.

He should keep quiet and use his energy to explain what happened. He has claimed on some radio that he did not participate in privatization, but if he did not participate in privatisation why is he saying the matter is in court?

“We want to tell Mr Hakainde Hichilema that first of all it is not possible to take the whole country in court. Number two, the issues that are in court have nothing to do with how he failed to declare interest in swindling the Zambian people of a hotel that the Zambians had actually believed was sold to a third party when in actual fact he is the one who bought,” Mr Ngulube said.

These, he said, are matters of public interest and are fair comments that people are making and by law, even if Hakiande has sued Edith Nawakwi alone, it does not stop every Zambian from commenting on the matter.

“Hakainde’s complaint in court is that Edith Nawakwi accused him of having stolen a house, that is the issue that he has taken to court.

In that court case, Hakainde refused, failed or neglected to mention privatisation.

There is nothing stopping us from commenting on this matter. We demand answers from Hakainde. We demand that from today, this issue of privatisation will follow you until you ex-

plain,” he said.

Mr Ngulube further said, “We will not allow Hakainde to intimidate the nation by threats of taking the matter to court. The decision to take the matter to court was his personal decision, it did not silence the people of Zambia. Just like Hakainde himself calls the Zambian people and the ruling corrupt, how he calls everybody in PF corrupt, it is in the same spirit, we are also asking him to account.” “ Hakainde thought he was very clever when he started calling people corrupt, he thought he was not living in glass house. He is living in a glass house and now he has realized that apart from him throwing stones at people, people are capable of also throwing stones at him,” he said.

So, we want to urge him not to be a cry baby.

He should just be strong enough to explain what he did during privatisation.

RESIGN, MWILA TELLS HICHILEMA following the announcement of results of Thursday’s parliamentary and local government by-elections.

We are asking you Mr Hakainde Hichilema, please explain to the people of Zambia, during privatisation you were poor, after privatisation you became rich. So can you explain to us how you became rich?

And stop threatening people. Stop gagging us. Allow people to debate openly and freely,” the Kabwe lawmaker said.

Mr Ngulube said, “The issue of privatization is a matter of public interest and it is in our minds. All of us were swindled by you and so we have the right to get an explanation. If he wants he can sue the whole country, get the list of all Zambians and make sure that he serves everyone with an injunction and he must explain why he doesn’t want us to talk about privatisation.”

THE Constitutional Amendment Bill no 10 has been reinstated for debate in Parliament following a motion raised by Vice President Inonge Wina, forcing some UPND MPs to walkout in protest.

Some UPND Members of Parliament walked out of Parliament yesterday when Ms Wina, moved a motion to reinstate bills, including the constitution amendment Bill 10 which were not debated in the last session.

Ms Wina said parliamentary procedure was that when it resumes sittings, bills such as amendment Bill number 10 of 2019, Food and Nutrition bill, Food Reserve Agency bill among others which were not concluded were supposed to be reinstated.

She urged all MPs to support the motion for the bills to be concluded during this sitting.

Several MPs did support the motion and all the bills were reinstated.

But the leader of the opposition, Mr Jack Mwiimbu, indicated that the UPND MPs would never support Bill 10 which had already elapsed.

Central MP, said the Patriotic Front wanted to reinstate Bill 10 because it was a ventilator to ensure that President Edgar Lungu was eligible to stand in 2021 elections.

He said that the UPND would not participate in such issues which were intended to protect the PF. Meanwhile, Government Deputy Chief Whip, Tutwa Ngulube, reminded Mr Mwiimbu that Bill 10 was not meant to protect the PF but to amend the 2016 amended constitution.

Mr Ngulube indicated that if Bill 10 did not pass, the UPND should never cry foul when they lose the 2021 general elections.

He said that Bill 10 gave an opportunity for MPs to amend the constitution which had a number of lacunas.

Mr Ngulube who is also Kabwe Central MP said that if Bill 10 was passed it would address issues such as the presidential petition period that had been a source of concern among political players, especially the UPND. He said UPND would obviously lose the 2021 general elections and they would run to the courts and if the constitution was not amended, the 14-day presidential petition would stay and they should never cry foul.

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has thanked the people of Lukashya and Mwansabombwe for voting for Patriotic Front (PF) candidates in Thursday’s by-elections.

Mr Lungu also congratulated Mr George Chisanga and Mr Kabaso Kapampi for emerging victorious in Lukanshya and Mwansabombwe constituencies respectively.

In a statement issued by his special assistant for press and public relations Issac Chipampe, Mr Lungu said the two victories showed that people still believed in the PF government’s development agenda.

“These victories arising from the unfortunate loss of two lives of wonderful souls were also a litmus test for the party’s popularity in Northern and Luapula provinces. Now that we have won the two seats, it shows that our people in the two regions believe in our developmental agenda,” President Lungu said.

The President also urged the two new Members of

Parliament not to let the people from two constituencies down.

“Work hard in the remaining few months before the general elections.

Don’t let the people down, justify why you won, “he said.

And President Lungu thanked the people of Kalengwa, Mwinyilamba, Kandombe, Kasongo, Lunyiwe, Chibanga and Machinga wards for voting for the PF. He also congratulated the United Party for National Development for winning the other five ward by-elections.

Govt eager to get strategic partner for KCM

WE are working tirelessly to find a strategic partner to take over the operations of Konkola Copper Mine (KCM), Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Richard Musukwa, has said.

The minister said the technical committee given the man-

date to identify an investor to take over KCM was doing everything to ensure the process was concluded.

Mr Musukwa said Government was eager to ensure that an investor was identified as soon as possible so that operations can start running smoothly.

"Things are moving, soon

an investor will be identified to ensure that it starts running the mine. Since the liquidator was appointed operations have been going on well but an investor is needed so that operations can be run on fullscale," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Musukwa was confident that the liquidation case in court would be

concluded soon. He said that the case was hindering the progress of running the mine and it was important that it was put to bed without delay.

"All we are wishing is that the court process comes to an end as soon as possible. Once this case is concluded we shall see things start moving well at KCM," Mr Musukwa said.

OVERNMENT should do away with Indeni Petroleum Refinery to help reduce fuel prices, Alliance for Democracy and Development president Charles Milupi has suggested.

Mr Milupi said the Indeni plant was outdated and that it was not a refinery but a mere separator of already refined fuel.

He said the fuel that comes into Zambia was already produced and mixed and only separated here.

Mr Milupi said the Indeni refinery had become a liability and therefore Government should import already separated fuel avoid unnecessary expenses.

He also advised Government to reduce fuel taxes to reduce pump prices.

Mr Milupi said fuel taxes were too high and had contributed to high prices of the commodity and the cost of doing business.

He said said any revision in fuel taxes should be downwards so that prices of fuel could help spur development even when the Kwacha was depreciating.

Mr Milupi said fuel was one of the drivers of economic development and therefore Government should find means of ensuring that prices were moderated.

Mr Milupi said ‘middlemen’ in fuel trade have contributed to high prices of the commodity in the country.

State wants stay of damages to Mwaliteta and others

THE Attorney General has asked the Lusaka High Court to stay proceedings for assessment of damages pending an application for leave to appeal against decision to award UPND Lusaka Province chairman, Obvious Mwaliteta.

Mr Mwaliteta, Evans Mukobela, MacMillan Shimukonka, Laswell Phiri and Emmanuel Mumbi sued the State over their alleged malicious prosecution and are seeking K768, 971, as special damages.

THERE should be no glitches in the implementation of the Farmers Inputs Support Programme (FISP), Mbala District Commissioner Maybin Chibalange has told the district agriculture committee.

Mr Chibalange said he will not allow any inconveniences in the distribution exercise because government had already distributed inputs such as fertilizer and seed in the district through stakeholders like NERIA's Investments.

FARMERS WILL GROW MORE MAIZE - CENTRAL CHIEFS

ARMERS have been motivated to produce more maize in the coming seasons following prompt payments by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), chiefs in Central Province have said.

The chiefs have also commended Government for the early distribution of inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) for the 2020/2021 farming season.

The chiefs were happy that

Government through the FRA had paid the small-scale farmers early for the maize.

Chief Shaibila who represented the 10 chiefs who met President Edgar Lungu said farmers were motivated to work even harder next season.

"We are really happy for the early flag-off and distribution of FISP for the coming season for that we say keep it up as you said it will never occur again," Chief Shaibila said.

Mukwita ready to call on Zambians in Diaspora

ZAMBIAN'S ambassador to Germany, Anthony Mukwita says his administration welcomes the challenge thrown to diplomats by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chalwe Lombe not to always wait for Zambians in the diaspora to call at the mission for services.

Mr Mukwita said making the call and not wait would be his ‘mantra’ from now onwards.

This is contained in a statement issued in Berlin by First Secretary for press and public relations Kellys Kaunda.

Mr Mukwita said he would make it part of his duties to

schedule calls to different Zambians based in Germany and six other countries he is accredited to.

The countries are Poland, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic.

“It helps to demystify diplomacy and project it as a public service for the well-being of every person despite their social status in life,” Mr Mukwita said.

On Wednesday Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation, Chalwe Lombe urged diplomats not to wait for Zambians to call them but to be proactive and initiate calls.

during a diaspora virtual clinic with Zambia’s foreign missions based in Europe.

“Make the call, don’t wait for the call”, Mr Lombe urged diplomats as he explained, “just find out how they are doing; what the embassy can do for them if anything.”

FQM PLEADS FOR CONSISTENT MINE TAX REGIME “We have seen numerous changes to the country’s mining tax regime over the last 10 years,”

OVERNMENT needs to put in place an effective and efficient mineral tax regime to attract foreign direct investment, says First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Government affairs specialist, Godwin Beene.

He said the tax regime should adequately compensate the country while remaining internationally attractive and competitive.

“We have seen numerous changes to the country’s mining tax regime over the last 10 years,” he noted.

Dr Beene indicated that an effective and efficient

mineral tax regime would enable FQM and other mining companies continue being a major contributor to the Zambian economy.

He explained that the mining firm’s approach to tax and royalty payments reflected its underlying core values that focused on building open and transparent relationships with the tax authorities in the countries where it operated.

“However, despite the policy inconsistency, First Quantum managed to pay more than US$533 million (K5.6 billion) in taxes to the Zambian government in 2018, with an additional US$10 million spent on

community and infrastructure projects,” Dr Beene said in a statement.

Meanwhile, FQM’s Sentinel Mine in Kalumbila District of North-Western Province exceeded production targets for July and August.

Kalumbila Minerals production has increased production from 112,693.17 tonnes from January to June in 2019 to 117,353.51 tonnes in the same period in 2020.

Kansanshi Mining, production increased from 112,540.76 tonnes in 2019 to 128,188.20 tonnes in 2020.

This development puts the mine on track to meet investor projections for the full quarter.

Think-tank projects economic rebound

THE Zambian economy will rebound next year especially if diversification and value addition are prioritised, Policy Monitoring and Research Centre (PMRC) Executive Director, Bernadette Deka-Zulu has said.

Ms Zulu added that there would be need to expand the export base while seeking local business solutions.

She acknowledged in her OP-ED the several interventions and relief measures that were instituted to cushion the country against the negative effects of the Covid-19.

Some of the notable interventions include, the K10 billion refinancing facility, the K8 billion Covid bond: the K2.5 billion aimed at paying local contractors and suppliers among others.

“Further, there have been several tax relief measures.

All these measures have

been very essential to keep the wheels of the economy running even as the Covid threat has been prevalent.

“There is hope indeed as the rebound of our economy is projected in 2021. With regards to the economy, the call remains to prioritise diversification, value addition, expanding the export base, and finding local business solutions,” Ms Zulu said.

PMRC, Ms Zulu said, had been contributing to this call by providing platforms for several stakeholders to dialogue, discuss and propose innovative solutions towards this cause.

Ms Zulu pledged PMRC’s continued support for positive and constructive dialogue in the country.

She indicated that it was encouraging to note that Zambia had moved from being importers of maize seed to net exporters.

She said this development confirmed that research and

‘Utilise online voter registration process’

By ANDREW MUKOMA ELIGIBLE voters should take advantage of the online voter registration to expedite the process, Monze Town Council Deputy Secretary Sydney Hamooya has said.

Mr Hamooya said the online process would save them time when eligible voters visit the registration centres to complete the process because they all have done the registration online and only wait to be approved.

He was speaking when he featured on a ‘Media Population Control’ sponsored radio programme on Sky FM. Mr Hamooya said the online voter registration platform would ease the challenges faced during physical registration such as long queues and time taken to capture information during registration.

He explained that online voter registration centres had been identified in each constituency where eligible voters who would use the online platform to complete the process and collect their voter’s card.

“In Monze Central the Civic Centre will be the static centre, while in Bweengwa we will have Nteme Primary School and Mumuni Library in Moomba Constituency as the designated stations for online Voter Registration Centre,” Mr Hamooya said.

He added that members of the public will be informed in due course on the exact days and dates the Registration Officers would be at each centre.

He said various forms of sensitization would be used to ensure that people were informed about the Voter Registration Centres and other activities.

“We had a workshop in Choma where Assistant Registrations Officer Supervisors were trained.

We prepared the centres and came up with a deployment plan. We will be able to publicize the names of the centres in due course so that each eligible voter can go and register,” he said.

Mr Hamooya implored residents to ensure that they exercise their right to vote by registering as a voter between October 28 and November 30, this year.

PF grabs 3 out 5 wards in North-West

THE Patriotic Front (PF) in North-Western Province has grabbed three out of five local government seats in the by-elections.

According to the information gathered by the Daily Nation in Solwezi, the PF has scooped Linyuwe in Kabompo, Kalengwa in Mufumbwe and Mwinilamba in Ikelenge.

The UPND has retained the Kashima east in Mufumbwe and Kanzenzi in Mwinilunga.

In Kalengwa, PF’s Vincent Maseka polled 274 votes against his only contender Annie Kapangalwendo from the UPND who only managed 175 votes.

In Mwinilamba, Joswell Saken’ga of PF polled 293 votes beating his rival Lesmord Kaumba of UPND who polled 281 votes.

In Linyuwe, the PF candidate got 452 votes, beating UPND candidate who only managed 295 votes.

Meanwhile, in Kashima east UPND candidate Milner Katolo polled 519 votes against the PF candidate Victor Siyumba who polled 493 votes.

In Kanzenzi, the UPND candidate polled 505 votes while the PF candidate polled 487 votes only.

PF provincial Information and Publicity Secretary, Edwin Sekelechi, said the outcome of the polls in the five by-elections was a good indicator that the people North-western province were ready to work with the Government of the day. ‘’In as much as we could have some challneges here and there, the truth is the people are ready and willing to work and support the ruling party,’’ he said.

But UPND provincial youth Information Secretary Kelly Naweji accused the PF of abusing Government facilities.

Mr Naweji said PF officials were openly seen distributing mealie meal in all the five wards.

Frightening because Zambians are losing millions through this well organised syndicate of plain criminals.

The face book is awash with people claiming to make millions for their unsuspecting victims.

Dear Editor, ANYONE can go into agriculture and this depends solely on your managerial knowledge about it. Agriculture is the basis of all raw material we see today.

We need to produce more cash crops and food crops in Zambia, which is very possible and the world will come running to us.

We can only achieve this if more people engage more in agriculture in Zambia.

Let me digress a little bit.

They can also provide insurance schemes for every large scale farmer because agriculture certainly is a risky enterprise in the production stage.

I have been to almost all corners of Zambia and I have found out that every part has various climatic and soil condition types that can raise almost all types of crops and animals all across the globe according to their requirements.

Foreign firms in Kalulushi harassing workers?

District Commissioner (DC) Stephen Kainga has expressed concern with the levels of misconduct among foreign investors towards the locals. “I have been receiving numerous complaints of harassment from local employees at their work places. This situation is uncalled for and we will not as Government allow such kind of treatment of fellow human beings to continue,� he said.

Mr Kainga said that Government was working very hard to see to it that Labour laws were followed especially by foreign investors.

He warned that his office would not tolerate the harsh treatment of local workers by any firm on the district.

The DC further called on employees to report employers who break the law without hesitation so that the law could visit them.

THE UPND on the Copperbelt has conveyed its gratitude to the voters in the just ended by-elections in Lufwanyama and Mpongwe districts.

The opposition party won the Milopa, Kansanta and Luswishi wards in Lufwanyama while PF grabbed Mushingashi, Chubanga wards in Lufwanyama and Kasonga ward in Mpongwe in the by-elections on Thursday.

These wards fell vacant following the resignation and defection of the former UPND councillors to the ruling party.

UPND Copperbelt Chairman Elisha Matambo said that despite being intimidated, voters managed to deliver resounding victories for the party.

"The PF heavily relied on intimidation, bribery and violence and therefore expected a complete whitewash, but our people stood their ground and rejected their corrupt advances including offers of cash and food handouts," he said.

Mr Matambo said the party's victories undercut the PF's misplaced claims that the Copperbelt was their strong hold.

"We also wish to salute our gallant candidates from the wards who refused to exchange their loyalty and patriotism with cash. “We also commend our structures who were drawn from all Copperbelt districts, that we had assigned a ward each to manage the campaigns," he said.

Mr Matambo however implored party members to continue working hard, recruiting and ensuring that they encouraged the people especially those who had attained the voting age to obtain Nation Registration Cards (NRCs).

OUTHS must show commitment whenever they are given an opportunity for empowerment and become self-reliant, Kwacha Member of Parliament Joe Malanji has said Mr Malanji said Government would not give hand-outs to youths, but would instead explore various ways of empowering them hence the need for them to reciprocate by demonstrating commitment.

He was speaking in Kitwe yesterday when he handed over a 65-seater bus Higher bus worth US$270,000 to Umuntu Musepela Cooperative which has a membership of 30 youths. “Government will always explore various ways of empowering the youths so that they are self-reliant. The idea of cooperatives is good and it is such initiatives which

Those who are committed will benefit from initiatives of the Government,� Mr Malanji said.

Under the youth empowerment programme, the cooperative had contributed K100,000 which Mr Malanji paid for the youths Mr Malanji, who is Foreign Affairs Minister, said Government has had challenges in trying to empower youths in the past because it had to deal with emergencies like floods and other natural calamities.

Urethra: This is the tube that carries semen from the sperm duct and urine from the bladder.

Epididymis: This is made of coiled tubes where sperms are stored.

Sperm duct (vas deferens): This is the tube that carries spermatozoa from the epididymis to the urethra.

Penis: This is an erectile organ that is used to deposit semen into the vagina during sexual intercourse. The semen is deposited into the vagina by a process called ejaculation.

Sexual Reproduction in Frogs ü Frogs require water in order to reproduce. This is because their eggs and larval stages are adapted to obtain their oxygen from water. ü Mature male frogs attract females for mating by making croaking sounds. The male mounts the female in water to start the copulation process. ü During copulation, the female produces a large number of eggs which are then fertilized by spermatozoa from the male outside of the female’s body. This is called external fertilization. ü Once the eggs have been laid, there is no parental care but they are left to develop on their own. Each egg contains egg yolk which is rich in food needed for development of the embryo until it hatches to produce a tadpole.

ü The tadpole moves through water by propelling itself using a tail and obtains oxygen from water using gills.

• Ovulation is the release of an ovum from the ovary.

Menstruation is the shedding of the uterus lining together with some blood through the vagina which occurs when an ovum does not get fertilized. It lasts three to five days. Ovulation and menstruation occur approximately 14 days (two weeks) after each other.

• The menstrual cycle is controlled by hormones secreted by the pituitary gland and the ovaries.

• The hormones from the pituitary gland (follicle stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone) act on the ovaries while those from the ovaries (oestrogen and progesterone) act on the lining of the uterus (endometrium). The roles of these hormones are summarized below: 1. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is secreted by the pituitary gland and causes ripening of the eggs in the ovaries by stimulating the development of Graafian follicles around them.

2. Oestrogen is secreted by the Graafian follicle in the ovary. It builds up the lining of the uterus, inhibits further secretion of follicle stimulating hormone and stimulates secretion of luteinising hormone.

3. Luteinising Hormone (LH) is secreted by the pituitary gland. It stimulates ovulation and the development of the corpus luteum (yellow body) from the remains of the Graafian follicle.

4. Progesterone is secreted by the corpus luteum in the ovaries. It maintains the growth of the uterus lining and increases blood supply to it in readiness for implantation in case fertilization occurs. It also inhibits secretion of FSH and LH by the pituitary gland.

Botswana opts to make land owners of wives with new law GABORONE - A wife in Botswana can now own land alongside her husband, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said on Thursday in a boost for women that rights groups called long overdue.

Prior to his amendment, the 2015 Land Policy stopped wives from owning land if their husbands already had some.

“This amendment will allow women to be independent in marriages, and also have rights to land as any other person. We applaud this move,” said women rights activist Tunah Moalosi.

Women face a host of barriers to owning land - be it through skewed inheritance rights or restricted authority over assets - in 40 percent of countries, World Bank research shows.

Although most African and Asian farmers are women, only about 15 percent of global farmland is owned by women, according to Landesa, a global land rights organisation, with experts predicting increased inequality due to the coronavirus.

Botswana’s revised Land Policy gives everyone an equal eligibility to a residential plot in a place of their choice,

on both state and tribal land.

Previously, only unmarried women or the wives of men who did not already own land were eligible for land rights.

The discrimination left millions of married woman, widows and single mothers without access to the land where they live and work.

“The Botswana Land Policy 2015 was discriminatory against married women and did not give them equal treatment with men, and I am happy to report that this discriminatory sub-section has since been repealed,” Mass said at a virtual briefing.

The government allots deeds for land on which people have a legitimate claim but no legal rights, seeking to regularises a chaotic ownership system.

According to a government audit announced in parliament last month, 53 percent of the 620, 660 people on the government land allocation waiting list are women. The average waiting period for land is between 10 and 30 years, it said.

Masisi said on Twitter that the new policy would also protect widows and orphans who may head households.

Tshegofatso Mokibelo, 38, a widowed financial analyst, was turned down when she last applied for a residential plot because her late husband owned land and his family had claimed it.

ONDON - An Amsterdam court on Thursday froze a stake held by Exem Energy, a company owned by the husband of Angola’s former first daughter Isabel dos Santos, in a dispute over a deal struck with Angolan state oil firm Sonangol in 2006.

The dispute, which is being heard in Amsterdam after both sides agreed on arbitration, concerns Sonangol’s sale 14 years ago of a 40 percent stake in holding company Esperaza to Exem, which is owned by Isabel dos Santos’ husband Sindika Dokolo.

Sonangol argues that Exem acquired the stake on “extremely inconsiderable terms,” according to court documents posted on the Amsterdam appeal court’s website, where Thursday’s ruling was announced.

“There has been no findings of wrongdoing by Exem, Mario Silva (its

representative on Esperaza’s board), or Sindika Dokolo,” Exem said in a statement.

“This ruling gives Exem the opportunity to present the facts while also allowing the company to continue to operate normally,” it said.

ORBES has ranked Liverpool star, Mohamed Salah as the only African star on its list of highest-paid footballers for 2020.

Salah was placed fifth in the global 10-man shortlist behind no. 1 Barcelona's Lionel Messi, Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo and PSG's duo, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Manchester United's Paul Pogba, Barcelona's Antoine Griemann, Real Madrid's Gareth Bale, Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea completed the ranking.

Over the past 12 months, the two-time African Footballer of the Year earned $37 million which included a salary of $24 million and endorsement deals worth $13 million.

During the period, Salah enjoyed success with Liverpool on continental and global level before helping them end their 30-year wait for a Premier League title in July.

Following their Champions League triumph in the 2018-19 season, the 28-year-old helped Jurgen Klopp's side lift the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Chelsea, and then the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar last December.

Last season, his contribution of 19 goals in 34 Premier League matches helped the Anfield outfit win their maiden top-flight crown since 1990.

Since he moved to Merseyside from Roma in 2017, Salah had passed the 20-goal mark across all competitions in his last three seasons.

He started the 2020-21 campaign on a flying note after scoring a hattrick last Saturday, as Liverpool began their league title defence with a 4-3 victory over the newly-promoted Leeds United.

Zesco signings cheer Sakuwaha

FORMER Zambia national team and Zesco United striker, Jonas Sakuwaha has hailed Zesco United Football Club management’s decision to strengthen the side ahead of the 2020/2021 FAZ/MTN Super Division season.

Sakuwaha, who spent four glittering years at the Ndola-based side told the club’s media team led by Desmond Katongo in an interview that the signing of Bruce Musakanya, Lazarus Phiri and Kelvin Kampamba is a step in the right direction.

“Zesco United has played a lot of games in the last four

seasons winning three titles in the process. As such it was crucial to bring in new faces especially with the departure of key players such as Lazarus Kambole.

“Last season was difficult and it was clear that the boys were tired and needed some support. I am happy with the step management has taken to bring in new players,” Sakuwaha said.

The former Lorient and TP Mazembe striker has also backed Kampamba, Musakanya and Phiri to succeed at Zesco United.

“Bruce is a fantastic player with a lot of experience both at domestic and internation-

al level. He will provide those killer passes that can be a nightmare for defenders.

“Kampamba is another remarkable player who will make an instant impact in the team especially were goals are concerned. The guy can provide excellent passes and can score from free-kicks,” he said.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winning striker has also urged former Kansanshi Dynamos winger, Lazarus Phiri to shine at Zesco United.

‘PFL title defence will be tough’

In an interview, Christoforetti said his team will face stiff competitions from teams like Kabwe K-line and Kitwe Bullets who have been impressive after the first two rounds of the league.

Christoforetti said Automotive, who dominated the 2019/2020 PFL which was declared null and void due to the Covid-19 pandemic, have made a number of changes which has seen the team engaging new players for the 2020/2021 futsal season.

Automotive thumped DC Isoka 6-0 on Saturday and Christoforetti believes the 2018/2019 futsal champions need to improve further as the league advances.

“Defending the title won’t be easy we are a team that trains, for a long time we have been training professionally so we have this advantage but it doesn’t guarantee us the title defense.

“We did change a lot we have new players in the team I’m letting young players to have more game time and experience needed to compete so it is not going to be easy the last game we played showed that the league will be tough,” Christoforetti said.
