SCHOOLS, BARS IN NEW NORMAL SIX months after being closed, schools and bars have been given the green light to reopen with due diligence being taken to guard against the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The cry for both schools and bars to reopen have been getting louder as the economy began to bite.

Many people earn their living from running bars and their closure had crippled their earnings.

Schools, especially private-run entities, did not fare any better.

In fact, many of the stories we have ran have shown that the closure has had a telling effect on both learners and teachers.

Apart from teachers and lecturers losing a source of income because parents and guardians became reluctant to pay school fees for non-learning pupils, learners also lost valuable hours of classroom work.

Income in private learning institutions simply dried up.

Some schools had resorted to putting their members of staff on half salaries as a way of mitigating the impact of the pandemic.

As the economy began to bite, the cries to reopen schools got louder and louder and the most recent was from the Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT).

The union had contended that the pandemic was here to stay and that the ministry of Health had managed to bring the scourge under control, hence the call to reopen schools.

Equally concerned bar owners had made several overtures to Government to give the sector some lifeline before people became destitute due to the prolonged closure of bars.

Yesterday, President Edgar Lungu responded to the cries and ordered that both schools and bars be reopened, albeit under special guidelines.

In reopening the bars, the President advised that these could only operate from Friday to Sunday, which is three days in a week specifically, while schools would resume normal operations under the new normal.

This means that pupils and teachers would be expected to mask up, observe social distancing as well as sanitise hands when need be.

Making the announcement during the opening of the fifth session of the twentieth National Assembly, the President emphasized the need to strictly adhere to Covid-19 health preventive measures.

He said the reopening of bars and night clubs was done on a pilot basis, warning that should there be flouting of public health guidelines, he would be forced to close them again.

President Lungu however said the bars and night clubs would be open partially from Friday to Sunday between 18:00 hours and 23:00 hours.

This means that no one would be allowed to be loitering near the bar premises after 23:00 hours.

It is imperative that these regulations are observed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 through bars and night clubs.

The President also directed the Ministry of Home Affairs and Local Government to ensure there was strict adherence to preventive measures against the pandemic.

These means that police officers and health inspectors would be expected to do the rounds of bars and schools, to ensure there is adherence.

It is in the best interest of everyone to observe the general guidelines as provided by the Ministry of Health to guard against the spread of Covid-19.

The nation has already witnessed the devastating impact of Covid-19, through a surge in BIDs (brought in dead) cases especially in July.

The lull that is being experienced is therefore to be taken with caution for things could change without notice if people became careless.

Strict enforcement of measures is needed to ensure the country does not backslide.

OVERNMENT says it will investigate the reported drug shortages in some hospitals around the country, Ministry of Health spokesperson Abel Kabalo has said.

Reacting to some reports that there was a shortage of essential drugs in some

hospitals, Dr Kabalo said it was surprising to learn about the shortage because the government recently received a consignment of drugs and other materials which have been distributed across the country and added to the already existing stock.

He said Lusaka being the capital was one of the first to receive.

“It is surprising to hear about those reports then we are going to investigate this to find out the truth because we received drugs last week so we don’t expect such reports,”Dr Kabalo said.

Dr Kabalo commended government for stocking up on drugs to add to the already existing stock.

There have been reports of shortage of essential drugs in some hospitals and clinics in Lusaka and surrounding areas of late.

Hospital revealed that some patients are being given prescriptions to buy essential drugs and surgical materials such as IV fluids.

At Chawama clinic which was still congested by 15:30 hours, a patient talked to said she went to the hospital around 06 hours but was only attended to after 14:00hrs.

She said she was given some of the drugs and a prescription to buy the other drugs that were not available at the clinic.

Another patient claimed that those who did not know any medical personnel at the clinic were not attended to quickly.

At Chingwere Level One Hospital, the situation was the same as the health facility was still congested by 16:30 hours on Monday.

Some patients talk complained that they were only given pain killers and prescriptions for major drugs.

Mr Musenge upon being advised did submit the new symbol of the party but since then no new development had taken place.

And in an interview Mr Musenge said despite the delays he was optimistic that the new political party would be launched.

‘Engage in gold mining’

By SILUMESI MALUMO PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has encouraged Zambians to form cooperatives and engage in gold mining.

The Head of State said if more Zambian people got involved in gold mining, it would help change their welfare.

He was speaking yesterday when he opened the fifth session of the twelfth National Assembly in Lusaka.

President Lungu said gold was a lucrative mineral and it was important that people engaged in mining the natural resource sustainably.

Mr Lungu said: “I therefore encourage more people to form cooperatives and engage in gold mining so that their lives can be improved.”

When Zambian people form cooperatives, President Lungu said, Government would support them in order to enhance operations.

“Mr Speaker, as Government we have identified the mineral to be a strategic mineral as it will help in improving the economy and the welfare of our people.

“I would like to encourage my people to have interest in this sector and ensure that they form cooperatives and as Government we shall support them so that they will be able to undertake mining activities,” he said.

President Lungu said about 13 cooperative had been created in Vubwi, Rufunsa and other districts and had started mining gold.

He said this was encouraging because the commitment would enable many lives in the country improve significantly.

ZRA, FIC tackle illicit outflows in mines

By SANFROSSA MANYINDA THE Zambia Revenue Authority is working closely with the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) to ensure that mines do not rip off the country through tax avoidance.

It was revealed in the 2019 FIC 6th Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Trends report that some mining firms were repatriating proceeds to offshore jurisdictions while declaring losses to evade tax.

The report also disclosed that some precious stones and base metals that were exported to foreign jurisdictions were undervalued.

According to the report, the FIC disseminated 44 intelligence reports to law enforcement agencies with suspected losses valued at K984 million compared to the ZMW 6.1 billion reported in 2018 from 80 intelligence reports disseminated.

However, ZRA Corperate Communications Manager Topsy Sikalinda told the Daily Nation in Kitwe that they were working with the FIC to ensure that the trend was curbed.

"We will continue working closely with FIC until we see the vice is completely curbed," Mr Sikalinda said.

It was also revealed that as a result of the disseminations made by the FIC, the ZRA assessed taxes amounting to K27.7m in 2019, compared to K62m in 2018.

Economy to rebound - Lungu THE country’s economy is projected to rebound in 2021, President Edgar Lungu has said.

President Lungu said diversification and job creation would play a key role in the recovery process of the country’s economy.

He also said Government would continue investing in key sectors of the economy such as agriculture.

President Lungu however said the recovery process depended on how the Covid-19 pandemic would be dealt with.

He said Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu would give details on how the economy would be helped to recover during the presentation of the National budget.

The President said this when he addressed the fifth session of the twelfth national Assembly yesterday.- ZNBC

Load-shedding ends this year - Lungu

By SILUMESI MALUMO PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu said he will commission the 750 megawatts at Kafue Gorge Lower power plant being constructed at a cost of US $2 billion by the end of this year.

The coming on stream of 750 megawatts will end loadshedding.

President Lungu assured Zambians that once the power plant was operational, the power challenges the country had been facing would come to an end.

Speaking yesterday when he addressed the fifth session of the 12th National Assembly, President Lungu said load-shedding had seriously affect the economy and the welfare of many Zambian but it would come to an end.

He said that the country had power deficit of about 810 megawatts but with the coming on board of Kafue Gorge Lower and other hydro power stations and solar

power plants, the deficit would be cushioned.

Mr Lungu said Government was committed to ensuring that electricity generation in the country improved significantly.

“My Government is not leaving any stone unturned, we want to ensure that power challenges which the country has been faced with become a thing of past,” he said.

President Lungu said Government had invested enough in electricity in order to turn around things in the energy sector.

Electricity, he said, was critical to the country’s economy and therefore it was the reason Government was investing significantly in the sector.

“The construction of Kafue Gorge Lower has reached an advanced stage and by the end of this year the project will be commissioned. This is a major milestone in the power generations.

“So the Kafue Gorge Lower coming on board and many other projects we are constructing, the 810 megawatts power deficit will be cushioned and the country will never face loadshedding,” President Lungu said.

Don’t cut off voter registration – UPND

By GRACE CHAILE-LESOETSA THE UPND has argued that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) must not cut off the voter registration to 30 days but proceed with an assurance by the Ministry of Home Affairs that they have covered the entire country in the issuance of National Registration Cards (NRC).

Ms Imenda said there is a procedural requirement for ECZ to

act reasonably in the decision made under section 28 by taking into consideration the public interest and furtherance of democratic tenets.

“The applicant contends that reducing the voter registration period to 30 days in the penultimate year of Presidential and general elections for August 12, 2021 is too short to allow citizens to register considering that voter registration is highly dependent on the exercise for the registration of National Registration Cards,” she said. She argued that the 30 days cut-off period will only advantage those regions in the country that have been accorded the opportunity to fairly participate in the voter registration exercise and would result

in “gerrymandering” by the resultant effect of disenfranchising some regions of the country.

She stated that the decision to discard the voter register is not only dangerous to the country’s democracy but gravely illegal because it flouts section 7 of the Electoral Process Act. “The consequences of this decision are too ghastly to contemplate for our nascent democracy. One can only imagine what would happen if a person leaving in diaspora travels from abroad to cast his vote only to find that his name was wiped out of the voter register and coupled with that ECZ only made a 30-day window for citizens to register from October 18, 2020,” said Ms Imenda

PIA board members prejudiced criminal case - witness

By OLIVER SAMBOKO PENSION and Insurance Authority (PIA) board members took a position prejudicial to the interest of the state in the criminal case involving three senior members of PIA, the Lusaka Magistrate's court heard yesterday.

This is in a case in which Registrar of PIA Christopher Mapani, Deputy Registrar Titus Nkhwale and Manager Compliance and Insurance Nicholas Mbuya are facing two counts of abuse of authority of office.

Testifying in the matter, state witness Noel Mwanza, 42, a prosecutor from the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) told the court that on June, 8, 2020, NPA held pre-trial for two cases including the one involving Mr Mapani and two others at Twangale Lodge in Chilanga.

He said among the participants in the pre-trial was the DPP and other senior state advocates at which PIA board Chairperson Petronella Mwangala and board secretary Mrs Kabisa Ngwila were also invited as witnesses among others drawn from the Ministry of Finance, directors of Ultimate Insurance and PIA. He testified that on June, 12, 2020, Ms Mwangala accompanied by her board secretary came through for pre-trial.

Mr Mwanza said that at the same trial session, Ms Mwangala informed the meeting that she had brought with her an institutional lawyer identified as Kaumbu Mwondela.

He said when the NPA was preparing the witness for the trial, it had difficulties with PIA as they had taken a position prejudicial to the interest of the state leading to the board chair being warned that she could be co-charged in the matter.

Refurbished oxygen plant handed over

By KALOBWE BWALYA OVER eight hundred thousand Kwacha has been spent on refurbishing the oxygen plant and mother’s shelter at the university Teaching Hospital (UTH) Children’s Hospital since it was commissioned.

Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya thanked the UNICEF and the government of Sweden for the financial support channeled towards renovating both facilities at the hospital.

K702,350 was spent on renovating the oxygen plant while over K100,000 went towards refurbishing the mother’s shelter.

Dr Chilufya said the donation of the refurbished oxygen plant had come at the right time when the Zambia was battling the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Chilufya explained President Edgar Lungu had been re-engineering the health sector to re-position it for universal health coverage.

Dr Chilufya said with Covid -19 many patients being admitted to health institutions needed oxygen and as such the use of oxygen had gone up.

Meanwhile, UNICEF country representative Ms Noala Skinner said oxygen was a key life ingredient at all health institutions.

Ms Skinner said UNICEF would also extended the support to Lewanika and Mongu general hospitals’ mothers’ shelter.

And UTH senior medical superintendent –Children’s hospitals Professor John Musuku disclosed that the oxygen plant and the mother had been in dormant in last 10 years and commended UNICEF and Sweden government for the support.

Meanwhile, Zambia has recorded 109 new Covid-19 cases, one facility death and 5 unclassified. Fiftytwo people were admitted countrywide of whom 19 are on oxygen.

Lungu warns against corruption

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has warned of stern action against public servants involved in corruption.

And President Lungu has advised political leaders to preach peace and refrain from utterances that have potential to cause violence as the country goes towards the 2021 general elections.

The Head of State said those found in engaging in corruption would face the wrath of the law.

He said yesterday during the national address that any individual involved in corruption would not be protected by the Government.

Mr Lungu said regardless of which political party the perpetrators are affiliated to, the law would be applied fairy.

“Fighting corruption is our main priority as Government. As Government we will not tolerate any form of corruption.

“Those who will be found guilty by the courts of law will be dealt with. The law will be applied to any individual involved in corruption regardless of the political party you belong,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Lungu urged Zambians to desist from violence as the country goes towards elections.

Mr Lungu said there was no need for the people to engage in violence during campaigns, stressing that people should embrace each other.

“Elections come and go, so there is no need for people to engage in violence. We need to remain one people, one nation before and after elections,” President Lungu said.

$30m modern resort set for launch …Union Gold unveils facility next month

Union Gold, which is the holding company for Protea Hotels, is behind this investment.

Other facilities in this modern Avant- grade resort, will be a hotel, convention centre, brewery, sports facility and kids play area among others.

Bonanza Resort General Manager, Adrian Penny, said the resort had so far provided work for over 300 locals and almost 325 permanent jobs would be created once fully operational.

Mr Penny said the resort would be opened to the public on October 23, this year and would start with 150 employees and around 200 part time staff.

He said the resort would spend about US$500, 000 on training its local staff, starting

that the resort would continue to improve the lives of those in the community.

Mr Penny said the resort was not only offering employment but also providing extensive training to team members to develop them into highly skilled and confident professional at an International level.

“The investment is by Union Gold which is the holding company for Protea Hotels which will be at resort,” Mr Penny said during the tour of the resort yesterday in Lusaka.

Mr Penny said the facility was targeting Zambian citizens and the focus was the domestic market.

He said the resort was sourcing their food stuff from the local farmers and would continue to engage more farmers as the business expand.

“Our marketing focus is to grow domestic travel. Being located just 25 kilometre from Lusaka town, Bonanza Resort is the ideal location for Lusaka residents to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and feel as if they are going out of town,” Mr Penny said. He said once the air travel became accessible post Covid-19 , the proximity to Kenneth Kaunda International Airport was ideal for International conventions, meeting and events.

THE re-opening of universities has cheered students at the Kitwe-based Copperbelt University, a student leader has said.

President Edgar Lungu yesterday announced the reopening of all schools, colleges, and universities during the opening of parliament.

COBUSU president, Lawrence Kasonde, said the students have eagerly been waiting the reopening of learning institutions because not all had access to e-learning as many of them come from vulnerable families.

Mr Kasonde said during an interview with ZNBC at parliament building shortly after the Presidential address that e-learning or virtual learning came with its own challenges to students from low-income homes.“It's something that every student has been waiting to hear because only the privileged are the ones that are able to access virtual learning, students from vulnerable families have challenges to access e-learning.

“This is because they are certain things that you need to put in place for you to access e-learning, things like gadgets, data, the load shedding schedule has also

Expert backs State on eliminating load-shedding

WE do not expect any power deficit after 750 megawatts from Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station come on board in December, Energy Expert Johnson Chikwanda has said.

“I stand confident and support the statement made by President Edgar Lungu that load shedding would be the thing of the past because once all 750meggwats (MW) from the Kafue Gorge Lower Power station comes online, “ he said.

Mr Chikwanda said besides the 750 MW that would be added to the national grid, there were other projects in advanced stages of commissioning in the thermo energy sector which would be added to the grid.

He was speaking on ZNBC yesterday shortly after the Presidential address to parliament.

Mr Chikwanda said diversification in the energy sector had played a major in saving the country, which has for many years

relied on hydropower generation.

“Diversification in the energy matrix is what has saved us because we have been

Mr Chikwanda however said the country should not be complacent that once the 750 MW was added to the national grid then load shedding would be completely eliminated.

He explained that what would be eliminated was the deficit because the country had about 70 percent of households that had not been connected to the grid. Mr Chikwanda is of the view that the drive to grow and capacitate the energy sector and electrify the rural areas should continue.

“So what is being emphasized here is a short term to cushion the current challenges that we are having, when we have these power plants come on and one or two smaller solar power plants then definitely will are going to deal with the current energy poverty that we have,” he said.

OFFICIALS from Russia and Zambia are expected to hold a videoconference this month to discuss the ongoing project to build a nuclear research centre in the country.

The videoconference is scheduled for September will discuss the roadmap, Zambia’s ambassador to Russia, Shadreck Luwita, told Sputnik.

He said this on the sidelines of the RussiaAfrica Partnership Forum Secretariat’s presentation in Moscow on Wednesday this week.

Citing the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Luwita said he was hoping that progress would be made on the project in the coming months.

“Because of the lockdown, the project was suspended, so now the project is going to be reviewed, so that we hear a revised roadmap on how the project is going to be implemented.

“The videoconference is scheduled for September that will discuss the roadmap, that is when we will have a clear picture as to when the official visits can commence from both

sides,” he said.

Mr Luwita said now as the economies were being opened up, he was looking forward to the implementation of the project for nuclear center technology which was supposed to be implemented in Zambia.

HEN the K a f u e Co n s o r t i u m proposed sale collapsed, Cabinet made a decision to unbundle ZCCM. The mode of privatisation adopted by the government was to unbundle the company and sell the assets in business packages.

The main reasons for unbundling the company into these asset packages was to promote the diversity of ownership of the mining assets, minimise delays in exploiting the various ore reserves and resources and, minimise political and economic risks.

Cabinet also approved to restructure ZCCM into an investment holding company to hold a minority interest in the sold packages (which became ZCCM-IH ).

The GRZ/ZCCM Privatisation Negotiating Team established sub committees to expedite the sale.

It appointed; 1. Mr. Norman Mbazima, CEO and Managing Partner of Deloitte and Touche to find a buyer for ZCCM core assets.

2. Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, CEO and Managing Partner of Coopers and Lybrand Zambia, Grant Thornton, to sell noncore assets and subsidiary companies.

3. Mr. Elias Chipimo,

Zambia lacks opposition political parties Dear Editor, ZAMBIA risks being a one-party state despite having practised plural politics since 1991 because of the calibre of most opposition political parties.

It is disheartening how most of the opposition political parties are preoccupied with schemes of going to plot one againstone another being the political parties awaiting to form Government.

They have deliberately ignored to represent their followers regarding issues to do with alleviating poverty even in their strongholds to concentrate on the road to State House. Yet it is only one person’s ego they are fulfilling; the one wanting to occupy it.

If that is not the case, why not divert the resources to needy areas in their strongholds instead of paying lawyers to seek interpretation just over mere pronouncements by President Edgar Lungu that if PF wants him to stand in 2021, he is available.

WISH to call upon labour inspectors in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to make random inspections at companies to get first and information on how some employers violate labour laws with impunity and ill-treat their employees in particular.

YOUTHS WANT ENHANCED AWARENESS ON FUNDS

OME youths in Kitwe have lamented the lack of information on how they can access the various Government youth empowerment programme.

Recently, Government launched the K470 million national youth empowerment programme, running parallel to the livestock empowerment, the K30 million meant for artistes and another K106 million available under the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development.

Youths in separate interviews in Kitwe argued that no tangible results had been recorded in similar initiatives in the past and suggested that adequate information should be availed.

A youth, Godfrey Musonda, said many youths had no idea on how to generate innovative business ideas, write proposals or how to access the empowerment initiatives available to them.

Mr Musonda argued that there was lack of sensitisation which he said was supposed to be paramount to the success of the initiatives especially that past youth empowerment schemes such as the higher busses transport project and colossal sums of money, failed to yield intended results.

"Government should have done home work on the ground before launching the K470 million national youth empowerment program. We feel it may also fail like the past schemes and loans which beneficiaries never paid back," he said.

Another youth, Michael Kabwe, advised those who benefitted from the empowerment programmes to put the resources to good use, pay back on time.

Mr Kabwe said it was disappointing to note that some people were being selfish by not paying back the money for others to benefit in the near future.

Ms Jenifer Mwape echoed the sentiments and appealed to Government to create a reachable desk to explain empowerment schemes in the country, especially in the rural areas.

Another youth, Joseph Phiri, said lack of information was a hindrance to development and urged Government to enhance awareness on empowerment programmes.

Luanshya Mayor stakes K50, 000 for talent show

By SANFROSSA MANYINDA LUANSHYA Mayor Nathan Chanda has pledged to spend more than K50, 000 for the December 2020 Luanshya Got Talent show.

Mr Chanda said that this was in a bid to promote talent among youths in the district and reduce moral decay among the young.

The mayor observed that Luanshya had great talent that needed to be developed and promoted.

"I urge young people to continue being part of such productive activities so that they could keep themselves busy and desist from engaging themselves in illicit activities," he said.

Mr Chanda, who is also Copperbelt PF chairman, said it was important to ensure that youths were encouraged to work hard and above all to be disciplined.

He explained that it was the wish of Government that youths were not used as tools of political violence but as tools of development.

Government, he said, had faith in young people and therefore took advantage of the favourable environment created in a quest to empower the youths.

The mayor called on youths to come up with bankable projects and also take advantage of empowerment programmes such as the K470 million and Youths Multi-Sectoral Empowerment Fund under the Ministry of Youth.

Youths should also take advantage of the K30 million presidential youth empowerment fund, targeting the art industry in Zambia, under the Ministry of Tourism and Arts. " In life, one can only attract people who can help them or can be recognized by the society if they are humble, determined and disciplined.

Determination and Discipline will forever be key to success nomater how learned or skilled one is, they will never burn bridges behind them if they lack these characteristics," Mr Chanda said.

Mr Musukwa, who is Mines and Minerals Development Minister, said that youths were free to put up income generating facilities on the land and be able to

He said that this would create job opportunities among youths as long as they ventured into notable and serious viable business activities.

Mr Musukwa said that Government could not manage to give direct jobs to everyone but that it could help through such gestures.

Mr Musukwa warned the youth against selling the

land, stating that his office would not tolerate such an illegal act.

He said that the land was meant for them to better their lives and not for resale, hence they should reciprocate by generating income.

Youths and their ward councilor Donald Mwape thanked the MP for the gesture and described it as lifetime empowerment.

The incident occurred on Tuesday on the East bank of Zambezi and the deceased has been identified as Joseph Samukwala of Kalengwa village in chief Chinyama's chiefdom.

North-Western Province Commissioner of Police Elias Chushi, named the suspect as Kakoma Samukwala aged 26 of Kafwasa village of the same chiefdom.

Mr Chushi said Mr Samukwala was hacked on the head three times by his enraged son, who used a sharp axe.

"The suspect has been apprehended and confined by

police officers pending further procedures while the body of the deceased is lying in the mortuary at Zambezi District Hospital mortuary," he said.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man of Mitukutuku area has

been arrested for having sex with his 16-year-old biological daughter.

UPND justifies project inspection in Kalumbila CHIKANKATA TOWN COUNCIL

On Thursday, Kalumbila Town Council Secretary Josephine Mwanza said the council was not party to UPND national chairperson Mutale Nalumango’s inspection of schools, health facilities and bridges in the district.

Ms Mwanza stated that all projects the local authority was undertaking were Government initiatives and could not in any way be attributed to an individual or political party, in particular, the UPND. She said the inspection conducted had no blessings of the council, thereby regarding the act as unprofessional and unethical.

But UPND North-western province Vice -Chairlady in charge of Mobilization, Naomi Tetamashimba, justified that the party leadership was in

She said that Ms Nalumango was merely appreciating the projects being undertaken by Kalumbila Town Council since it was UPND-dominated.

"The project inspection by our leadership was to familiarize themselves with the happenings in the districts and councils controlled by us the UPND and to appreciate the local leadership on how they are utilizing locally generated funds. So, there is nothing sinister about it," Ms Tetamashimba stated.

Ms Tetamashimba advised the Patriotic Front (PF) to accept the fact that all councils in North-western Province were UPND –controlled, hence the need to appreciate the civic leadership which was working round the clock.

She condemned what she termed as "continued threat" on council staff by the PF for allowing her party to conduct a tour of the projects.

"And we will not allow these same continued threats of staff with suspensions and transfers," she added.

CAF ANNOUNCE CHAN DATES T

HE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the African Nations Championship tournament which was postponed earlier this year will kick off on January 16 with the final set for February 7, 2021.

The African football governing body made the announcement on Thursday, after an Executive Committee meeting, thereby alerting the 16 nations involved in the competition t o re s u m e

preparations just over three months away from the start of the competition.

CAF said the sixth edition of the CHAN tournament, which was initially scheduled for April 4-25, 2020 and postponed due to the Covid-19 will kick-off on January 16 with hosts Cameroon facing Zimbabwe.

CAF said the tournament which features players who play for their domestic league will have in effect the fourth substitution rule in the event of extra time at the knockout stages of the competition.

CAF also noted that the 2022 CHAN tournament in Algeria has been rescheduled to January 2023, and the exact dates will be discussed with the Algerian Football Federation.

CAF has also rescheduled dates for the 2021 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco to March 13 – 31, 2021 following a request by the

Moroccan Football Federation. “An amendment to the MRI test regulations was approved so as to disqualify any team that has even one ineligible player,” read part of the decisions made by the Executive Committee.

Zambia who finished third in 2009 and have been quarter-finalists in the other two editions will compete in group D with Guinea who finished fourth in 2014 and will be making their third appearance in the tournament in Cameroon.

The Chipolopolo will also face Namibia and Tanzania who will be making a second appearance at the CHAN after they took part in the maiden edition in 2009 where they were eliminated at the group stage.

The 16 national teams which qualified for the tournament will converge in the land of the Indomitable Lions to try to dethrone champions

Morocco.

Meanwhile, CAF has opened the process of launching bids for junior competitions, the women’s competitions, CAF Champions League and Beach Soccer Africa Cup. CAF also noted that the CAF Women’s Champions League will feature eight teams from Six CAF Zones which will organise qualifiers to determine the finalists for the eight team tournament, who will include the host and the best losing team.

“For the maiden edition, the zonal union of the host country will have two representatives. However, for subsequent editions, the host country will have only one representative whilst the Zonal Union of the defending champion will qualify two teams,” CAF said, adding that the competition will be held annually and during the second half of the year.

Just a few days ago, the Zambia Volleyball Association announced the cancellation of their national league for this year. And the worry has been how to keep the athletes fit during this abrupt off season?

Gladly, this week’s announcement that Lusaka’s OYDC Zambia Sports Development Centre has been cleared to to start its activities ignited hope.

OYDC Chief Executive Officer Frederick Chitangala said only sports disciplines like Netball, Hockey, Beach Volley and Basketball has so far resumed in a bid to maintain a minimum number of people at the facility.

TOTTENHAM Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho "honestly believes" the club will sign a striker in the transfer window.

A new arrival would join Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn in Spurs' squad.

Spurs were left short up front last season when Kane and Son were injured in January and February respectively.

"I want, I need a striker," Mourinho said. "But I want to make it very, very clear that the club knows that I need a

Some of the so-called “minor” sports have no other sports centres where they can train or practice apart from the OYDC hence, the reopening will definitely have a positive impact on the various sports.

It is difficult to find a tennis court in the compounds and thus, the reopening brings a glimmer of hope for a “minor” sport.

The reopening of OYDC however, should not be received by over excitement and various stakeholders shouldn’t become overzealous. This is the time to adequately prepare for sports in the “new normal.”

Sports federations must put everything in place to prevent the centre from being a hunting ground for Covid-19. Strict guidelines must be put in place to ensure that everyone adheres to them.

Testing kits must be acquired and everyone who participates in the various sports must be declared free from the deadly virus. The staff at OYDC and all stakeholders must be tested regularly to make sure that there is no outbreak.

The opening of the OYDC is a welcome move and will surely help in the development of sports in the post-Covid era.

Let all stakeholders not be overzealous but make comprehensively rational decisions.

...FAZ reject social media’s 'fake' Chipolopolo squad

HE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has dismissed the national team list circulating on social media and attributed to Chipolopolo coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic.

FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala said the circulated list is false and should be ignored by the public.

In a statement issued

by FAZ communications manager, Sydney Mungala, Kashala said the association has a standard procedure for announcing national team call-ups that involves the coach publicly naming his squad or through official FAZ media platforms.

"Following the wide circulation of a purported team list of the senior men’s national team allegedly produced by Chipolopolo coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic, the Football Association of Zambia wishes to state that the technical bench has not

yet announced the squad for upcoming fixtures," Kashala said.

He said ‘Micho’ will announce his squad for upcoming fixtures after receiving a confirmed calendar for October fixtures.

“We understand the anxiety some people may be experiencing arising from the absence of international football but that should not be a reason to fabricate national call-ups,” Kashala said.

“The responsibility to make call-ups lies entirely with the coach and FAZ does not interfere in that area.”

The Chipolopolo’s confirmed international engagement is in November with back-to-back fixtures against Botswana in the Cameroon 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Meanwhile, FAZ has lined up two planned international friendly matches next month against the United Arab Emirates before the dates for the 2020 Cosafa Senior Men’s Challenge are confirmed.
