STOP STIGMATISATION ALL citizens must hold together and desist from stigmatising Covid-19 patients and asymptomatic individuals as the trend is retrogressive in the fight against the pandemic.

Zambians must give moral, spiritual and other forms of support to individuals who have recovered from the disease instead of running away from them because such an act amounts to stigmatisation.

Reports abound about unsympathetic individuals pouring scorn and mocking people who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in many areas.

Nakonde District Commissioner, Field Simwinga, experienced stigmatisation as some people kept away from him and his family when he left an isolation centre after recovering.

Some parents advised their children to keep away from his family members who had just gone through treatment and care.

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dora Siliya, received a flurry of attacks when she came out in the open to announce that she had tested positive of corona virus.

Individuals, including women took to social media accusing the minister of lying about her status while others rejoiced about the unfortunate situation.

One would have thought that the women would rise up and defend their female colleague, but nay, they were part of social media hooliganism.

There was dead silence from women’s organisations that pretend to advocate for the rights of women in the country.

Mocking reached a crescendo a few days later when Health Minister, Chitalu Chilufya, also tested positive.

A number of people, including political foes took it out on him and celebrated his positive status and subsequent self-isolation.

There were a myriad of negative opinions about the Health Minister, who should have naturally received sympathy and accolades for having been in the forefront disseminating information about preventive measures.

Certainly, there are more incidences of mocking of ordinary citizens going unreported in townships, work places and other locations.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Services and other Government wings ought to be proactive and check stigmatisation and other excesses in work places on workers who have once suffered from coronavirus.

Additionally, the civil society should equally get heavily involved in fighting discrimination against Covid-19 victims.

Evidently, information dissemination is concentrated on preventive measures and statistics of infections and recoveries, leaving an information gap on the imperative need to fight discrimination.

Just as some sections of society has observed, it is “unZambian” to mock a sick person or anyone who experienced a sickness.

From a Christian stand-point, Zambians ought to bear for one another and encourage the weak as opposed to mocking them.

The prophet Jeremiah declared that God brings healing and states in Chapter 33:6 that, “Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.”

Likewise, citizens must not turn the tide but go along with the Biblical teachings and encourage the weak, sick and the weary.

All Christians have a moral and spiritual obligation to encourage the sick and in this case, it is important to pray for Jehovah Rapha’s hand of healing upon all Covid-19 afflicted persons.

Mocking the sick does not come from God, but has its roots elsewhere; it must be avoided at all costs.

THE Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has assured investors that their investment is safe and protected by the law.

ZDA board chairperson, Fisho Mwale, regretted that some lives had been lost and that there were reports of Zambian workers being subjected to harsh conditions of service.

A few days ago, three Chinese nationals were killed and their bodies burnt in a factory in Makeni area in Lusaka after a dispute with workers over payment while on the Copperbelt and other areas some workers were reported to have been forced into quarantine.

But Mr Mwale yesterday said ZDA was fully aware of the important role investors played in the country’s economic growth and job creation.

He however indicated that investors should adhere to the laws that govern how businesses should be run.

Mr Mwale said this must be done while investors adhered to the laws obtaining in this country for the mutual benefit of all parties involved.

THE Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) has hailed farmers for rising above challenges faced during the last farming season to record a bumper harvest.

ZNFU president Jervis Zimba yesterday said farmers faced numerous challenges such as late delivery of input distribution and uneven rain patterns across the country but that they were happy that farmers had delivered.

He said ZNFU recognised the challenges the farmers went through last season but that this notwithstanding, they rose against adversity.

“The Zambia National Farmers’ Union would like to thank most sincerely all farmers, the small-scale, emergent and large-scale for producing 3, 387, 469 metric tonnes of maize to make Zambia food secure.

“We do recognise the challenges the farmers went through last season i.e. the high cost of inputs and the uneven distribution of rain. This notwithstanding, you rose against adversity. Once again well done to the farmers of Zambia,” he said.

And Mr Zimba appealed to farm produce off-takers such as the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to offer farmers economically-sound prices for their commodities.

He said the 2020/2021 season was just a few months away and that giving farmers a good price for their produce would help them reinvest and adequately prepare for the coming season.

“We urge our farmers to now focus on the marketing aspects.

We would like to urge all the off-takers especially the Food Reserve Agency to pay an economic price to the farmers and to pay the farmers on time.

“We are five months away from the 2020/2021 farming season and we do recognise that the input costs have increased due to various factors. It is only by paying farmers an economic price for the maize that we can expect them to reinvest for the coming season,” Mr Zimba said.

They also want the court to compel Mr Kaunda and the others to produce a full UNIP inventory of assets and funds within and outside the country, an order for an account of all the party assets sold from 2000 to date, costs and any other relief the court may deem fit.

According to an affidavit in support of Ex-parte summons to join parties to action filed recently, Mr Mannwell Ng’ambi, who is one of the plaintiffs stated that on August 6, 2029 the complainants commenced an action among other things claiming an account of UNIP assets and cessation of illegal sale of

assets belonging to the party by the defendants.

Mr Ng’ambi said on August 22, 2019, the Lusaka High Court granted an Ex-parte order of injunction restraining the defendants from performing duties of members of the central committee (MCCs) save those duties to organise the Congress.

He claimed that the defendants have disregarded the said order of injunction and have during the substance of the injunction on December 6, 2019 illegally sold property number 632 Kabwe also known as Victoria House to Iqbal Akubat (fifth intended defendant).

ZAMBIAN firms have no capacity to undertake debt restructure because it is a complex process which needs highly competent firms, says the Economic Association of Zambia (EAZ).

And an economist Statistician has said Zambia needs a skilled financial adviser such as Lazard Freres Gestion with experience in dealing with other financial institutions who may be the holders of the country’s Eurobonds to restructure its US$11.2 billion external debt.

He said in an interview yesterday that Lazard had done debt restructuring for developed economies such as Argentina and Greece as well as African countries like Mozambique.

Meanwhile, Patriotic Front Media Director Sunday Chanda said opposition parties were ignorant on many issues, including the government's decision to restructure the national debt.

And Mr Nalishebo explained that Zambia had no local firm which had the needed experience to assist in restructuring the country’s debt.

“I could be wrong, but I do not know of any Zambian financial advisory firm or political party with a track record as Lazard’s to be able to pull off this kind of debt restructuring,” he said in his comment on the debate regarding the hiring of Lazard.

NY racial abuse of any Zambian by any foreigner on Zambian soil is an affront on the entire nation and it is inexcusable anywhere in the world, says the Patriotic Front.

CORRUPT traffic officers in Lusaka are again mounting illegal roadblocks and extorting money from motorists with impunity.

Motorists have complained that the officers were harassing them to obtain money from them corruptly.

A check by the Daily Nation found more than 12 traffic officers manning one roadblock on Lumumba Road near the Mungwi Road junction traffic light.

One officer went ahead to ask for a bribe from this reporter without knowing that the conversation was being recorded.

The police command in Lusaka was immediately alerted of the incident and

have since requested for details to follow up the matter.

Some motorists interviewed complained that traffic police officers hiding at “strategic points” on some roads in the capital city were only impounding vehicles from those who did not have any money after demanding a bribe. One motorist from Matero narrated how police last Thursday waylaid motorists at the Mungwi/Lumunba Road traffic lights and impounded his vehicle and several others while ignoring the chaos caused by minibus drivers, over defective traffic lights.

The motorist said: “I tried to explain to this elderly female cop that the minibus drivers were causing obstruction by blocking the road

Maize price fair - FRA

THE Food Reserve Agency (FRA) says it does not expect anyone to cry foul over the maize price pegged at K110 per 50 kilogramme bag for the 2020 crop marketing season.

And the FRA says it is ready to buy one million metric tonnes of maize as directed

by President Edgar Lungu. In an interview yesterday after announcing prices for designated agricultural commodities, FRA Executive Director Chola Kafwabulula said they consulted relevant players in the agriculture industry before arriving at the prices.

Mr. Kafwabulula said FRA invited the Ministry of Agriculture, Zambia Cooperative Federation, Small-Scale Farmers Association, and the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) for consultations but only ZNFU did not attend the meeting.

According to the 2020 crop marketing season prices, the FRA will buy white maize at K110 per 50kg bag, soya beans at K150 per 50kg bag, and paddy rice at K70 per 40kg bag.

Mr. Kafwabulula encouraged small-scale farmers to sell their produce to the FRA because it is a government institution tasked with providing national food security. He said this will guarantee food security for home-grown school feeding programmes, vulnerable groups like hospices, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), and floods and drought victims.

“When you leave maize to the private sector you will not have control over it. Selling maize to the FRA means empowering Zambians with food security. We are a transparent government agency because we ensure that

Mr Sampa wondered what kind of example Mr Hichilema was portraying to his followers when he can't come out and condemned attacks on elders.

MINERS IN QUARANTINE PERKS …K1, 000 to be locked up

MANAGEMENT at Chambishi Copper Smelter (CCS) has increases allowances and improved social amenities as the firm prepares for re-quarantine.

CCS said re-entry to the facilities will be taken seriously and employees have been given three days in which to decide whether to be quarantined or not.

According to a memorandum from management to employees and obtained by the Daily Nation in Kitwe yesterday, quarantine allowances had been increased by K1, 000 per month across the board.

Previously, workers in the lowest grade got K1, 000 quarantine allowance per month while those in the highest

grade were entitled to K5, 000.

Management provided food for quarantined employees before they were released on Wednesday after the initial quarantine period.

The memorandum dated May 27, 2020 was signed by assistant chief executive officer, Zhang Xiangwang and indicated that employees were given a fresh start.

More UPND MPs back Bill 10 - Tutwa

SOME Members of Parliament including the opposition who have been against Bill 10 are now in support after being guided by their traditional leaders to read and understand the contents, says Government Deputy Chief Tutwa Ngulube.

Mr Ngulube said most of the MPS who were against the legislation were instructed by traditional leaders to read and understand the clauses which had made them to appreciate its importance.

He said in an interview yesterday that some UPND MPs had now come to understand that they were initially misled about the legislation.

MANGANESE MINERS TO FORM COOPERATIVES

The move is aimed at curbing illegal mining.

Low compliance levels worry MP

WUSAKILE Member of Parliament Pavyuma Kalobo has expressed disappointed with the low compliance of wearing masks in his constituency.

Mr Kalobo was speaking in Kitwe when he received a donation of assorted items worth over K12, 000 in the fight against the corona virus to Luangwa Health Centre.

He said that it was important for people to realise the need to continue with the wearing of face masks in order to stop the further spread of the corona virus.

“The pandemic that has really affected a larger population of the world and Zambia has not been spared, hence the need to pay attention and adhere to all the health guidelines that have been put in place,” he said.

Mr Kalobo has since commended Ex-Helen Kaunda Secondary School pupils for donating to the health facility.

He said that the donation would help not only the health workers but the whole Luangwa community fight the deadly virus.

And speaking earlier, Kitwe District Clinical Care Expert Marrie-Josee Odimba said that the donation would help frontline health workers to stay safe from the disease.

“If the mineral is properly mined it will benefit the host community as well as the nation at large. The other issue which we raised was about the licence holders being blocked to access the mining areas by those who want to promote illegal mining.

“So we have decided to stop this illegal activities being promoted by some people so that the country can fully benefit from the resource," Mr Chani said.

CEC PROFIT DROPS BY 78 P.C.

PE R AT I O N A L challenges affecting Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) have negatively affected financial results for Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) whose profit after tax has reduced by 78 percent.

CEC total revenue decreased by three percent to US$408.272 million in 2019 from US$421.203 million in 2018 mainly on account of an eight percent reduction in power demand by the mines and reduced wheeling services to non-mining consumers of 7 percent.

Profit after tax was US$12.246 million compared to US$55.856 million in 2018, representing a decrease of 78 percent, says CEC Company Secretary, Julia Chaila.

Ms Chaila explained that KCM was the subject of winding up proceedings

commenced by ZCCM-IH while the planned smelter outage at MCM, for purposes of effecting plant overhaul, had the impact of reducing demand at the mine by about 35 percent.

She said the challenges at KCM had manifested in the customer failing to pay for power consumed, resulting in the company taking significant impairments during the year.

“This remains a top concern for the business, requiring the Company to take measures to limit its exposure if the customer does not find a sustainable solution in the coming year,” Ms Chaila said in a statement announcing the 2019 audited financial results.

Ms Chaila also said CEC expected the power demand to remain largely suppressed in the next one to two years.

She explained that the key downside risks to demand in the short term included the mining fiscal regime, seen as being unfavourable by the mines, and the impact

of Covid-19, which were yet to be fully understood at this stage.

She however said the prospects for a rebound in demand going forward remained positive as most mine customers worked to return their operations to full capacity and new projects resumed ramping up demand over the next three to five years.

THE Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) is promoting a scheme to ensure that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) supply safe and good quality products which will assist them access high value market during the Covid-19 period.

ZABS Executive Director, Manuel Mutale, said his organisation was promoting the Certified Local Supplier Scheme as a way of supporting SMEs gain access to high value markets.

Mr Mutale explained that the scheme provided an opportunity for small businesses to have their products tested and certified at an affordable cost in order for them to remain competitive.

“The competitiveness of the SME sector remains one of our priorities that is why the certified local supplier scheme was designed to specifically assist SME’s meet the requirements of their

customers through the application of standards and quality systems.

“We believe there is no better time for our SMEs to take advantage of this scheme than now, when there is demand and interest in locally produced products,” he said in a statement.

Mr Mutale said the pronouncement by President Edgar Lungu during his third Covid-19 address to the nation, offered a window of opportunity for SMEs to scale up production of essential commodities that could be supplied to various high value markets in the country. “We believe that a multilateral approach which includes organisations, private sectors and governments will be beneficial and imperative for a successful implementation of support for Africa’s MSMEs,” he said.

13 unclaimed bodies in KTH mortuary

KITWE Teaching Hospital (KTH) has 13 unclaimed bodies in the mortuary and has appealed to the public who maybe missing their relatives to check at the medical institution.

According to the Local Government Act cap 281 sec 61 function 41 of laws of Zambia, unclaimed bodies qualify to be disposed of by the council’s public health department.

A body is declared unclaimed after laying in a mortuary for 90 days without anyone claiming it.

KTH Public Relations Officer, Phoebe Chileya, confirmed to the Daily Nation that the bodies had been laying in the hospital mortuary for some time now without any identification.

“We have been issuing notices of identification to the public but no one has so far come to identify any of them. And looking at the period they have been in the mortuary they qualify to be disposed of,” she said.

Ms Chileya said that among the 13 bodies, of which most of them were in a decomposed state, was one female.

She said that the disposing of the unclaimed bodies would help decongest the mortuary and help personnel maintain hygiene.

“We therefore advise the public to always rush to the hospital whenever they miss their relatives to try and identify them so that they can be given proper burials,” Ms Chileya said.

FINALLY FARMERS ARE GETTING FAIR DEAL Dear Editor,

VER the last four months (July to October 2019), the price of Zambia's staple food (maize and mealie meal) has been on an upward trend.

This is largely due to an open system allowing farmers to sell maize at market value. A healthy situation.

Government on the other hand has continued to procure agricultural produce from farmers as per tradition (at slightly lower prices) to beef up food security through the Food Reserve Agency.

This market value or cost reflective tag has led to an increase in mealie meal prices for the consumer. It's a bitter sweet tale of sorts in that the farmer is getting value with every drop of sweat and the consumer (mostly in urban areas has to forego certain

luxuries to meet the cost of nshima.) The PF government's open market policy has created a conducive environment for sector growth.

For decades Zambia has enjoyed government subsidies on food and essential services such as electricity.

With time, these subsidies have been reduced and in some cases withdrawn to ease the burden on the national treasury. The adjustment process is never seamless but is a necessary measure.

We need to ask ourselves; "Who feeds Zambia?"

"At what cost do they do it?"

"Do they make a profit out of it?" The answer to each of these three questions will in turn determine whether or not the current price of mealie meal is justified. Zambia is largely fed by subsistence farmers most of whom are in rural or outskirt areas of

the country. President Edgar Lungu and PF government has tossed the coin and it is still spinning. The farmer's side of the coin is finally facing upwards. The farmer has for the first time sold his maize at the market price.

This has put more money in his pocket. This has stirred a production movement and an increase in the number of persons putting hoe to ground. The right formula has been found and a balance struck. An increase in agricultural output will mean; *A reduction in prices of agro produce and increased exports. This in turn becomes a self-regulating or market driven sector of the economy. *An increase in industries manufacturing farming equipment, fertiliser and other inputs, *An increase in demand

for packaging materials such as sacks The ultimate result is new jobs, new income streams and a broadened tax base all with an aim of enhancing the nation’s quality of livelihood.

The increase in mealie meal prices is therefore a blessing in disguise whose benefits will be appreciated beginning next harvest season. Every wise citizen with foresight should seize this moment and join the bandwagon of new farmers. The rewards will be worth it.

Dear Editor, ZAMBIA Telecommunication Corporation (ZAMTEL) is a Government-owned mobile service provider. It provides various services such as voice calls, selling of cell phones and internet among others.

As clients utilise these services, they may face some challenges and opt to seek clarification from the company. The customers make use of the free toll line 111 to communicate with the appropriate members of staff.

However, it becomes very difficult for the clients to communicate with officers from the call centre department. This is because their free toll line goes unanswered no matter how many times you call it. ZAMTEL should emulate Airtel and MTN whose toll free lines are very effective and reliable.

You get the feedback when you call their toll free lines thereby getting assisted within the twinkling of an eye or within the shortest possible time.

It is for this reason that I request ZAMTEL to improve their communication through the toll free line. If they can’t improve, it is better to do away with their toll free line because it is not serving the intended purpose.

We are sick and tired of getting a raw deal from ZAMTEL in terms of service delivery insofar as their toll free line is concerned.

SENIOR CHEMISTRY: PRODUCTION OF AMMONIA In the previous lesson, we talked about non-metals which include oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. When stating the uses of nitrogen and hydrogen, one use was common between the two and that is they are both used in the manufacturing of ammonia. In the lesson for today, we shall look at production of ammonia. Hence the topic for today is manufacturing of ammonia Ammonia can be prepared at both laboratory and industrial level.

We shall begin discussing manufacturing of ammonia at industrial level. The identity test for ammonia is that it turns damp red litmus paper blue. This means that when a damp (moist or wet) red paper is introduced into a gas jar containing ammonia, it will turn blue.

This entails that ammonia is alkaline in nature.

Physical properties of ammonia (a) It is colourless (b) It is lighter than air (c) It has a pungent smell (d) It has a boiling point of -33.30C (e) It has a freezing point of -77.70C (f) It is very soluble in water Chemical properties of ammonia (a) It turns a damp red litmus paper blue. This is the identity test for ammonia (b) It dissolves in water to form ammonium hydroxide (c) It burns in pure oxygen with a yellow- brown flame (d) It reacts with hydrogen chloride to form a white smoke as shown below NH3(g) + HCl(g) NH4Cl(s) Therefore, the white smoke is ammonium chloride (e) It is a reducing agent of metal oxides that are low in the reactivity series.

3CuO(s) + 2NH3(g) 3Cu(s) + 3H2O + N2(g) Manufacturing of ammonia at industrial level At industrial level, ammonia is manufactured by the Haber process.

The Haber process was named after a German Chemist by the name of Fritz Haber. At the Haber process, ammonia is manufactured by reacting nitrogen and hydrogen. These two gases used in this process are obtained from the industrial processes we discussed in our previous lesson. The diagram below shows Haber process.

Note that this is just a sketch diagram and it comes in different types but the principle remains the same.

On the other hand, when pressure is high, the forward reaction will be favoured. For gaseous reactant increasing pressure will in turn increase the amount of the product because the rate of collision of gas particles will be high. Therefore, increasing pressure in the Haber process will increase the yield of ammonia and the equilibrium position will shit to the right.

The catalyst speeds up the rate for forward and backward reaction at the same rate. The use of a catalyst in the Haber ensures that lower temperature is used so that there is high yield of ammonia.

Laboratory preparation of ammonia.

In the laboratory, ammonia is prepared by heating ammonium chloride(NH4Cl) calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2) commonly known as slaked lime. See the diagram below.

(a) Catalyst (iron) (b) Pressure of 200 atm (c) Temperature of 3500C to 4500C When the above conditions are met, the two gases react to produce ammonia. The ammonia produced is pumped into the condenser where it is condensed to liquid ammonia. The liquid ammonia is removed kept in the storage tank. The unreacted gases are pumped back to the reactor as indicated in the above diagram so that they can react to produce more ammonia.

When temperature is high, the backward reaction will be favoured, this means that ammonia will decompose to produce hydrogen and nitrogen and the equilibrium will shift to the left. Hence to maximise the yield of ammonia, slightly low temperature is required

Example 2 Ammonia is produced by a reversible reaction. The equation for the reaction is: N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3 (a) In the reversible reaction for the production of ammonia which reaction is exothermic and endothermic? (b) Explain what would happen to the pH of water when ammonia is dissolved in water. (c) Calculate the percentage of nitrogen in ammonia [N-14, H-1] Solution (a) The forward reaction is exothermic and the backward reaction is endothermic (b) When ammonia is dissolved in water, the pH of the water will increase implying that the solution will become alkaline. (c) Mr of NH3 = (14 x1) + (3x1)

When ammonia is heated with slaked lime, it will react as follows:

The ammonia gas produced is passed through the tower of calcium oxide commonly known as quicklime. Calcium oxide is used as a drying agent. Note that dying agents like sulphuric acid is not used ammonia is basic and it can react with it.

Ammonia gas is collected by downward displacement of air because it is less dense than air. When air is completely displaced, the gas jar is removed from the tower and closed.

Uses of ammonia (a) It is used in the manufacturing of explosives (b) It is used to manufacture glue and plastics (c) It is used as a refrigerant in the refrigerating plant (d) It is used as cleaning agent (e) It is used to manufacture nitric acid (f) It is used to manufacture fertilizers like ammonium sulphate and ammonia nitrate Example Study the diagram below showing preparation of ammonia

The mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen are fed into the reactor as shown in the above diagram. In the reactor, nitrogen and hydrogen react as follows: 2NH3(g) N2(g) + 3H2(g) The double arrows ( ) show that the reaction is reversible. This implies the reaction goes in the forward and backward direction.

For hydrogen and nitrogen to react, certain conditions are required and these conditions are:

(e) If the temperature is too high in the reactor, the backward reaction will be favoured and ammonia will decompose at a faster rate to produce nitrogen and hydrogen hence the equilibrium position will shift to the left. (f) The function of the condenser is to liquefy (condense) ammonia gas to liquid ammonia

BRASILIA - Brazil registered a new record in Covid-19 cases and more than 1, 000 dead in a 24-hour period, according to official figures out on Thursday.

The country has the world’s second highest number of confirmed novel Coronavirus cases 438, 238 after the United States.

According to Health Ministry data, 26, 417 new cases were confirmed in a 24-hour-period ending late Thursday. In that same period, Brazil experienced its third highest number of virus deaths since the start of the pandemic: 1, 156, bringing the total death toll to 26, 754, the sixth highest in the world.

Some experts however believe that the actual virus infection rate could be up to 15 times higher because there has been no widespread testing in Brazil.

The virus is spreading as federal and local authorities clash over health policies.

China says coronavirus did not originate from Wuhan wet market - it was super-spreader site BEIJING - Experts still don’t know where the new coronavirus came from.

Genetic evidence has all but confirmed that the virus originated in Chinese bats before it jumped to humans via an intermediary animal host.

But where and how that spillover first happened is still up for debate.

Initially, authorities in Wuhan, China, reported that the first cases of the virus emerged at the local Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market.

But following an investigation of the animals sold there, the Chinese Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said this week that it has ruled the site out as the origin point of the outbreak.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Gao Fu, the director of the Chinese CDC, told Chinese state media: “It now turns out that the market is one of the victims.”

Samples collected from animals at the market came back negative for the new coronavirus, suggesting that they couldn’t have infected shoppers.

The cases linked to the wet market weren’t the first in China.

Wuhan authorities first informed the World Health Organisation (WHO) about the unknown, pneumonialike illness that would later be identified as the new coronavirus on December 31.

After silence, Trump marks 100, 000 virus deaths in US WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Thursday marked the “sad milestone” of 100, 000 coronavirus deaths in the United States, after his earlier silence prompted criticism that he was failing in his duty to console victims and their loved ones.

“We have just reached a very sad milestone with the coronavirus pandemic deaths reaching 100, 000,” Trump posted on Twitter, about 16 hours after the death toll passed the threshold according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.

“To all of the families & friends of those who have passed, I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy & love for everything that these great people stood for & represent. God be with you!”

The US death toll, from 1.7 million confirmed infections, is by far the highest of any nation, and critics have accused the president of an inadequate early response to the pandemic.

Trump has repeatedly said any death from Covid-19 is tragic.

But he has been chided for appearing to concern himself more with the country digging out from economic devastation than consoling tens of thousands of American families shattered by the loss of loved ones.

The illicit trade in cigarettes in South Africa is now in full swing after the sale of tobacco was banned at the end of March as part of strict measures imposed to slow the spread of coronavirus, as the BBC reports.

WHEREAS once Michelle could go to her local shop in South Africa’s commercial hub, Johannesburg, to buy cigarettes she is now having to do a secret deal.

The 29-year-old economist finds sellers through contacts in WhatsApp groups and arranges a covert meeting to get her nicotine fix.

“Once you’ve found a seller you can trust, a meeting point or pick-up point is arranged,” she said.

‘No chance to stock up’

Michelle, which is not her real name, is not the only one. What was perfectly legal two months ago has turned thousands of people into potential criminals.

“No warning was given for the ban, so I personally wasn’t sufficiently prepared - either to get a stockpile or prepare to go without,” Michelle, who has been smoking for four years, said in an interview.

More than half a million people have added their names to an online petition calling for the government to change its mind.

“We have been provided no scientific evidence to support a tobacco ban,” Bev Maclean, who started the petition, wrote.

“With legal tobacco product sales being banned, consumers are turning to the illegal market and paying high prices for mostly illicit cigarettes that don’t pay taxes to government.” In the last financial year, South Africa’s tax collecting agency raised about $790m from tobacco sales. A two-month ban could therefore cost the government about $132m in lost revenue.

The authorities believe that by either reducing smoking, or even quitting, the chances of recovering from coronavirus are increased.

“The science says smokers begin to benefit from quitting a few hours after they quit,” explained Dr Catherine Egbe, who works in the alcohol, tobacco and drug unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).

Dr Egbe is one of the scientists who has publicly supported tobacco ban.

“While we know the worst is not yet over, current statistics point to the fact that the country could be doing something right.

“The pressure faced by the government is coming from those who want to prioritise profits over human lives,” said Dr Egbe.

The South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) birthday party took place in parliament on April 19, when Namibia was under lockdown and group gatherings were banned to limit the spread of coronavirus.

“We had a very important occasion of the 60th anniversary of SWAPO,” Geingob confessed on Thursday during a press conference on the country’s Covid-19 response.

HARARE - Three Zimbabwean youth leaders were granted bail on Thursday after being charged with promoting “public violence” for taking part in a demonstration from which they were allegedly abducted by police, a lawyers rights group said.

Joanna Mamombe, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri went missing from a Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party protest in Zimbabwe’s capital Harare on May 13.

They were found dumped on the side of the road two days later, covered in injuries and claiming they had been kidnapped by the police.

On Wednesday, Zimbabwe’s national

police charged the trio for taking part in an “illegal demonstration” and inciting “public violence.”

“The magistrate ordered them to pay Z$1, 000 ($40) bail each and report once a fortnight to the police,” Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights spokesman Kumbirai Mafunda told reporters outside Harare’s Magistrate Court on Thursday.

The three women, who are prominent members of the MDC’s youth league, are still recovering from multiple injuries in hospital.

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa said they had been severely beaten and sexually assaulted.

Taiwan decriminalises adultery in landmark ruling TAIPEI - Taiwan’s constitutional court yesterday decriminalised adultery in a landmark judgment aimed at upholding personal rights and privacy, scrapping a law that activists said discriminated against women.

The democratic island became the latest place in Asia to strike down a ban on marital infidelity following South Korea in 2015 and India in 2018. The court struck down the adultery law that meant those who had sex with a married person, or with a person outside marriage, could face up to a year in jail.

Teqball, Judo masks Chief Chamuka

By SPORTS REPORTER TEQBALL Federation of Zambia in partnership with Zambia Judo Association (ZJA) have donated 1, 000 reusable masks to Chief Chamuka of the Lenje people of Central Province to be given to the underprivileged children in schools.

Teqball president Dickson Jere and ZJA president Alfred Foloko yesterday made a joint donation to Chief Chamuka as part of their contribution to the fight against Covid-19 ahead of the re-opening of schools on Monday for learners in examination classes.

The two sports organisations have each contributed 500 reusable masks to the Chamuka chiefdom.

And speaking during the presentation, Jere said his association worked with ZJA to help in curbing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s not possible for the league to return on June 21 when teams are not training.

Teams need to start training now so that they get back in shape to avoid injuries.

There are a lot of things FAZ need to put in place that is why we are appealing to the government to lift the ban.”

He also challenged FAZ to present a clear road map to clubs on how it wishes to conclude the league.

Chawezi said teams will need adequate time to prepare their stadiums and their players for the

restart to protect them from unnecessary injuries.

“FAZ should quickly come up with a strategy of how teams will start participating in the league again. At least like we have seen in the EPL, it started with teams training in small groups,” he said.

On Tuesday FAZ vice president, Rix Mweemba indicated that the association is hoping to resume the league in the third week of June with FIFA indicating financial assistance to the clubs which will have to play the remaining games behind closed doors.

Is Shonga over-rating himself?

IN modern football, it is every player’s dream to be the most highly paid in any competitive league. But attracting a hefty salary comes at a cost of high performance from the player.

This week, the South African media revealed the colossal salary former Nkwazi Football Club striker Justin Shonga has demanded from Young Africans of Tanzania.

The striker, who plays for Orlando Pirates has struggled in the South African Premier League this season.

Shonga has so far featured in eight out of 23 league matches for Pirates and is yet to score. And yet the Zambian international is demanding a whopping US$15, 000 (about K270, 000) salary from the Tanzanian giants if he is to join them.

The Chipata-born player’s demands will see him become the highest paid in the Tanzanian Premier League and he will be getting more money than coach Luc Eymael at the club.

But is this realistic for a player who has made only three starts for the “Buccaneers” this season? The 23-year-old must try to

move and find his feet by joining another club where he can earn more game time. Very few clubs would spend so much on a player who has not scored a goal all season as a centre forward.

Shonga should put his feet down and put his career progression ahead of big monies.

It is a fact that if he stays at Pirates he will continue warming the bench hence, he must push for a move as quickly as possible.

The fight for places at Pirates has been stiff with Shonga clearly being relegated by Malawian striker Gabadinho Mhango who is the current league’s top scorer with 14 goals so far.

Demanding for a huge salary won’t help Shonga, let him push for a move to a club where he can have more game time.

Shonga is a talented striker and this could be a turning point for the Chipolopolo star.

He needs to move to a team where he is guaranteed game time.

Over-rating himself won’t do him any good.

Clubs to decide Wildcat PFL fate

And Chief Chamuka thanked the two sports bodies for the donation and choosing his chiefdom as one of the first beneficiaries of the Covid-19 prevention measures ahead of the reopening of schools for examination classes on Monday.

WILDCAT Premier Futsal League (PFL) clubs will meet to decide the fate of the league, PFL chairman Tarak Mehta has said.

Mehta said the league which was suspended after the government implemented a ban on contact sports to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic would resume or end prematurely after the meeting with the clubs.

The PFL meeting is set for today at the PFL headquarters in Lusaka.

Mehta said if it’s to resume, the

league will have to wait for proper guidelines from the government which is the biggest stakeholder in promoting the growth of futsal in Zambia.

He said the Wildcat PFL will also have to come up with strict measures aimed at promoting the players’ safety if the league is to resume.

“The Wildcat PFL remains suspended for now and this is in conformity to the directives from government which banned all contact sports.

Account for KoPa sales, FAZ told

THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has been challenged to state how much has been generated from the sales in KoPa sports apparel.

Soccer administrator Blackwell Siwale has wondered why FAZ had not declared what has been raised in the last two years that the KoPa was launched.

Siwale noted that the project was bound to fail because it was being treated like it was the FAZ president’s personal brand.

He said that the continued advertisement of the sports apparel by the FAZ president Andrew Kamanga on his social media pages created an impression that it was a personal project.
