CHRISMAR PURCHASE BY NAPSA IS ALL LIES IT is a lie that the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) is purchasing Chrismar Hotel at US$18 million, NAPSA head of corporate affairs, Cephas Sinyangwe has said. Mr Sinyangwe said it was a blatant lie that NAPSA was in talks with Lusaka business-

man Valden Findlay to buy Chrismar Hotel. Mr Sinyangwe was reacting to a story published by News Diggers that Mr Findlay who is a close associate of President Edgar Lungu was in the process of selling Chrismar Hotel at US$18 million to NAPSA. He said at no time did NAPSA engage Mr Findlay over the alleged sale of the property which is located at Plot number

6892 Los Angeles Boulevard in Lusaka “NAPSA is aware of a story circulating in some circles purporting that NAPSA had purchased Chrismar Hotel. “The authority wishes to categoricary state that it has not purchased the named firm. Therefore, the story must be discarded as fake news,” Mr Sinyangwe said. To Page 4

MMD CHIEF DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY OVER HOUSE OF PRAYER PROJECT By KETRA KALUNGA

T

HE secrecy surrounding the funds that have so far been donated towards the construction of the House of Prayer in Lusaka needs unbundling to avoid speculation, MMD president Nevers Mumba has said. Dr Mumba said the House of Prayer was a Christian project which should not be shrouded in secrecy. He said in an interview that there was need for transparency and accountability

in the manner resources donated towards the project were being handled. Dr Mumba, who is a former republican Vice President, urged the Ministry of Religious Affairs and National Guidance to issue a comprehensive statement on the status of the project and funds raised so far. “They should prove to the nation that the money that was raised is still intact and not tampered with. Otherwise the secrecy being exhibited so far is worrying,” he said.

Dr Mumba urged the ministry to tell the nation why the first board that was spearheading the project was changed. “Information on the ground is that they misappropriated the funds that were raised towards the project,” he said. Dr Mumba said that Government should clear the air on the allegations and if they were true, the nation should know what action had been taken. Over K2 million is reported to have been raised for the project.

Lungu to launch youth empowerment fund in Kitwe By SIMON MUNTEMBA PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu is today expected to launch to launch a multi-million youth empowerment fund in Kitwe, on the Copperbelt, Province. Minister of Sport, Youth and Child Development Emmanuel Mulenga announced the development at a media briefing jointly addressed with Chief Government spokesperson Dora Siliya in Lusaka yesterday.. Mr Mulenga said it was President Lungu’s desire to ensure that young people were self-reliant so that they could significantly contribute to the economic development of the country. He said Government would continue to create a conducive environment for young people with business ideas to pursue their dreams. Mr Mulenga said this was

important because most young people with brilliant business ideas are being inhibited by the high cost of financing. He said unlike other empowerment funds which were tied to specific sector, the yet to be launched fund would accommodate proposals from all sectors.

Is Mukuni UPND ‘vuvuzela?’ Sampa asks By NOEL IYOMBWA SENIOR Chief Mukuni has reduced himself to a United Party for National Development political spokesperson, Kasama Central Member of Parliament Kelvin Sampa has charged. Reacting to a statement by Senior Chief Mukuni alleging that it was agonising to see the Paramount Chitimukulu claim that UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema has intentions of dethroning him, Mr Sampa said that it is surprising that the traditional was speaking

on behalf of the UPND president. Mr Sampa explained that the statement by Senior Chief Mukuni was unfortunate because Paramount Chief Chitimukulu was not speaking from without. He said that the Bemba Chief was only making reference to what Mr Lukuku and Mr Mucheleka allegedly threatened that if UPND forms government, it will degazette the Chitimukulu. Mr Sampa said that it is shameful that the traditional leader is accusing Chitimukulu of responding to hearsay when

The Minister said the ministry would encourage young people to look at goods and services that were in short supply on the market so they could derive maximum profits from their businesses. And Mr Mulenga said the fund would be co-managed by his ministry and the Citizens Economic Empowerment it was the UPND themselves who were making the statements. He said that as a senior chief, he could have engaged Chitimukulu in private rather than issuing statements in the media.

Mr Sampa “first by chastising the two before he could go on a defence mode, defending Mr Hichilema,” Mr Sampa also said Senior Chief Mukuni had missed a great opportunity to chastise Mr Mucheleka and Mr Lukuku because the two are the ones who have been attacking Chitimukulu by

Commission (CEEC). Mr Mulenga said it was the desire of Government that the whole process is shortened to a minimum period of three weeks. Meanwhile, Chief Government spokesperson Dora Siliya has appealed to young people across the country to take advantage of the various empowerment initiatives Government has continued to put in place to achieve their business dreams. Ms Siliya said while Government had continued to take positive steps to empower young people, it was important for those with business ideas to rise to the occasion and seize the opportunity and participate in the economic development of the country. She appealed to the youth to make themselves available by taking a chance at the opportunities the presidential youth empowerment fund will present. issuing statements. “When Paramount Chitimukulu was referring to what the two were saying, and the statement that was issued by Senior Chief Mukuni claiming that the Chitimukulu is only responding to hearsay is very unfortunate. For me I would have expected him to begin “first by chastising the two before he could go on a defence mode, defending Mr Hichilema,” he said. Recently, Senior Chief Mukuni issued a statement stating that it was agonising to see Chitimukulu claim that Mr Hichilema has intentions of dethroning him. He said that as far he was concerned, what endangers Chitimukulu's throne is Bill 10 because he tragically appears to be a proponent of it.

Don’t abuse doctors, warns ZMA

By SIMON MUNTEMBA

THE Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) has condemned public abuse of medical doctors in the workplace. This follows a video that has gone viral showing a patient disparaging medical officers at the University Teaching Hospitals (UTHs), casualty and emergency area. ZMA secretary general, Dr Masiku Phiri said the association was aware of the unfortunate incident and commended its members for the exceptional professionalism exhibited in the face of immeasurable provocation. “Yours is a calling and ethical vocation, but you are human too and we know to what extent you went to hold your ground. ZMA is immensely proud of you,” Dr Phiri said. He said the association had launched its own investigation into the matter at hand in order to establish facts. In the meantime, he said, we would like to reassure the victims that should the alleged offender be found wanting,

ZMA will use all of its available resources to make an example out of him by exhausting all legal channels, with ZMA bearing all costs. “Additionally, we are aware that there was presence of Police officers at the scene with multiple witnesses and so are hopeful that a criminal case has been opened against the aggressor,” Dr Phiri said. Dr Phiri said it was saddening to note that at a time when health practioners were deep in the mud fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, they were verbally abused by the patients. “At a time when over 40 Medical Doctors have contracted Covid-19 in the line of duty and are currently under quarantine, doctors are battling depression and mental illness because of what they have witnessed at the battlefront in the war against corona virus, at a time where healthcare workers have been working tirelessly since the outbreak began in March, the last thing we would expect is verbal abuse at the hands of a state agent,” he said.

358 covid-19 cases recorded By OLIVER SAMBOKO ZAMBIA recorded 358 new Covid-19 cases from 1568 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya announced yesterday. Updating the nation on Covid-19, Dr Chilufya also disclosed that the country had recorded 10 BID deaths bringing the number of people who have succumbed to the disease to 256. He said the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in the country since the outbreak has escalated to 9021, while the number of deaths stands at 256 and recoveries at 7586. Dr Chilufya said six of the BIDs were recorded in Lusaka while Ndola recorded four. He also said of the 74 patients admitted to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, three are in critical conditions while another 41 patients are admitted in other facilities across the country. The Health Minister advised members of the public to always mask up and adhere to the Covid-19 guidelines so

as to reduce the number of cases. He said the geographical spread in the virus is worrying and needs to be addressed immediately. Dr Chilufya warned that no one will be allowed to enter markets and other public unless they are masked up.

2021 POLLS IN DOUBT? By KETRA KALUNGA

From Page 1 YALI president, Andrew Ntewewe said the country has almost 12 months left before it goes to the polls, and warned that if left unchecked COVID-19 which has caused so many deaths in the country could annihilate the nation. He warned that rather than get preoccupied with the elections, the nation should come together and deal with the current threat from the covid 19 pandemic. He said this was not the time for the coming elections to take centre stage because the nation has a more serious threat to deal with. “The 2021 elections that most political parties are focused on might not be there because of COVID-19, and concerted efforts needed to fight it because people would want to vote in a COVID-19 free environment,” Mr Ntewewe said. And YALI has welcome submissions from stakeholders that the UPND should be disqualified from the 2021 general elections if the party does not go to convention. He also said the calls from the people including the party members that the UPND should hold its intra-party elections were genuine because they were backed by the constitution. Mr. Ntewewe said yesterday in an interview that the UPND party were raping the Zambian constitution by failing to go to the convention since 2006. “It is constitutional for any political party to hold intra party elections, article 60 says a political party should hold a convention before going for

general elections,” he said. Mr Ntewewe said as YALI they were happy that more people have joined calls for the UPND to hold its party elections because they have on several occasions been attacked for raising the matter. He described the UPND leader, Hakainde Huchilema as the worst political party leader in upholding the democratic principles of the country. The YALI president said the UNPD leader has been going against the law by appointing the vice president and central committee on his own without going through the electoral process as provided for by article 60 of the Zambian constitution. Mr Ntewewe said as YALI they were ready to join other stakeholders in making submissions to the elections board to have the UPND disqualified if it doesnot go to the convention to elect the presidential candidate for 2021. He said is was dictatorship for Mr. Huchilema who he said sees himself as a god to hold on to the party presidency without going for a convention. Meanwhile, Mr Ntewewe says the 2021 general elections were hanging on a thread because of COVID-19 hence the need for political parties to cease fire and work together to end the deadly disease. Mr Ntewewe said this was not the time for political parties to level accusations against each other but to join hands in fighting the pandemic that is claiming lives of many Zambians. He said it was immature for the UPND to allege that ruling Patriotic Front (PF) was instructing the Zambia police not to allow them to hold meetings on the pretext of the escalating cases of COVID-19.

He advised Panji Kaunda not to be so bitter about the lifestyle of Tasila if he himself abused his opportunities as the son to the first Republican President through a reckless lifestyle. ‘MINES WILL REBOUND’ By SILUMESI MALUMO

THE dwindling mining sector will rebound due to the programmes Government is undertaking to ensure that the operations of mines are enhanced, the Small-Scale Miners Association of Zambia has said. The association’s president, Mr Kunda Chani, said the artisanal and smallscale miners faced numerous challenges especially during the Covid-19 period to undertake mining activities and help from Government was a relief. Mr Chani, was reacting to the K730, 000 grant which has been set aside by Government and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for artisanal and small-scale miners. He said the funds would play a critical role to miners in their operations. He said in an interview yesterday that as mining was critical to the country's economy, it was important that operations were not halted in any way as it can negatively affect the econ-

omy. Mr Chani said what Government had done was a step in the right direction, and urged other stakeholders to help the miners who were adversely affected during this period. He also urged the banks to allow small-scale miners to access soft loans for them to improve their operations. "The grant might look small but it will help smallscale miners who are suffering out there, and as an association any intervention meant to preserve the industry is a very welcome move. I think we would want to call upon other players to emulate this particular move which has been undertaken. They should come on board and provide other facilities ranging from grants, possible flexible loans and other facilities which will keep the industry afloat”. He assured the members that once the funds were given to the association they would shared accordingly.

UPSCALE COVID-19 AWARENESS THAT some Zambians have resorted to self-oxygen prescription, calls for an immediate repackaging of information about COVID-19 in a manner that will be persuasive and touching to the masses. At the moment, many citizens appear to be detached because the response to all precautionary measures has been lukewarm. They have to be forced to wear masks, they have to be policed to observe social distancing and have to be watched to wash their hands or sanitise and are only doing so when they reach commercial banks and retail outlets that are strict and compliant. Thus sensitisation programmes must be enhanced and redesigned to include an appealing and human element that will resonate with the public. The current formal and straight-jacket messages across mainstream media, bill boards and other platforms are invariably not able to stimulate action or change of mind-set. Government, multi-sectoral teams and other stakeholders have struggled to convince the larger portion of the population on the imperative need to strictly adhere to preventive measures. For five months now messages about COVID-19 have not had a significant impact on the citizens as information about preventive measures sounds like routine chorus. The message that ‘mask-up, observe social distancing and wash your hands regularly’ is simply not working in the manner it is being disseminated, particularly in high-density townships. Authorities must enhance monitoring as information flows and also evaluate its impact on the masses so that gaps can be closed; adjustments are supposed to be done on regular intervals. Health promotion officers and other personnel are key in information dissemination in their various jurisdictions across the country. The media stands as the most important tool to effectively disseminate information across the country and thus needs to be proactive rather than stick to the daily updates from the Ministry of Information. It will be helpful for the media to package information in an appealing manner that will generate interest and behavioral change. The media should also educate the masses on the provisions of the Public Health (Infected Areas) (Coronavirus Disease 2019), regulations 2020 as provided through the Statutory Instrument (SI) number 22. Under the regulations, a person who fails to comply with restrictions, prohibition or contravenes regulations commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a fine or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both. Information about SI 21 and 22, which were invoked in March this year has not been adequate in the public domain. Surprisingly, the social media was awash this week on the punitive measures portraying them as new yet, they were introduced through the same SIs in March this year in the Public Health Act. It is for this and many other reasons that information handlers need to do more in sensitising members of the public. Health teams and other stakeholders must get into markets and bus stations and work with associations to disseminate information about COVID-19. Information splashed on static and immobile bill boards is simply moribund while radio and television advertisement are proving monotonous. Drama and other forms of performing arts can still be implemented under the new normal in markets and bus stations to small groups and not necessarily large gatherings that could compromise social distancing. In a nutshell, there must be an immediate paradigm shift in the way information about COVID-19 is packaged to a much more appealing and touching fashion.

CORRUPTION RIFE IN OPPOSITION - TUTWA

ORRUPTION is deep rooted among the opposition who are everyday accusing Government of such acts without providing proper evidence, Deputy Chief Whip Tutwa Ngulube has said. Mr Ngulube, who is also PF Kabwe Central Member of Parliament, has since challenged all those that were accusing Government officials of being corrupt, to report to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) with concrete evidence. He told the Daily Nation that it was such baseless accusations that were painting a bad

picture of the country to the outside world. "Such allegations are baseless and meant as political campaigns to undermine the popularity of the party in government. “If these people who report had evidence, they would have been in the forefront making sure that corruption is stopped and not what we are seeing now," he said. Mr Ngulube further charged that those that were accusing others of being corrupt everyday were the ones that were corrupt. He charged that corruption was deep-rooted among op-

Langa initiative launched By GRACE CHAILELESOETSA THE newly launched Langa Chilanga Community Initiative (LCCI) is expected to increase household income, improve nutrition and entrepreneurship among small scale farmers in Chilanga , says Chilanga Member of Parliament, Maria Langa. During the launch of the LCCI yesterday at Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) in Mt.Makulu, Chilanga, Ms Langa said the five year initiative will be achieved under the four pillars which include agro productivity and value addition, vocational skills empowerment, entrepreneurship and leadership. She said LCCI has partnered with ZARI and Kamano Seed Company to enhance agricultural productivity, nutrition and entrepreneurship through on- farm seed multiplication and fruit tree production among small scale farmers. “Under the fruit tree

production, the small scale farmers will engage in the growing of dwarf Papaya, hass avocado and fibreless mangos. And ZARI is at hand to provide the technical know-how on how to manage these three crops that are economically viable,” she said. Ms Langa said the initiative is targeting to grow one million hass avocado trees which can translate into K150 million profit per annum. She called for mindset change among Chilanga farmers and encouraged them to consider crop diversification in these times of climate change. “ I am aware that Chilanga has over 100,000 people of which over 50,000 are youth and women. It is my hope that this initiative will help fight the under development and poverty in my constituency and district of Chilanga,” Ms Langa said. ZARI director Peter Lungu said the LCCI initiative was in line with the government’s call for crop diversification. Mr Lungu said ZARI would work closely with the farmers to ensure the programme was a success. And Kamano seed production specialist Stephen Tembo said the company will train the farmers in seed production which is more commercially profitable compared to conventional grain.

is meant to pay beneficiaries for the omitted months of July, August, September and October for 2017. He explained that the arrears were generated during the Zambia Postal Services Corporation era when it was engaged to pay beneficiaries

in 2017 after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare. “The months of July and August 2017 household beneficiaries were not paid whereas in the months of Septem-

Japan hands over training centre By NOEL IYOMBWA JAPAN has handed over a vocational training centre for youths in Kabwata in Lusaka under the Given Lubinda Foundation. Mizuuchi Ryuta, the Japanese Ambassador to Zambia, said that youths held the key to the healthy development of communities of Zambia. He said that with proper education and vocational training, youths had the potential to contribute to the development of the economy adding that without that, they could pose a threat to the peace and stability. The Japanese envoy was speaking during the han-

dover ceremony. Mr Ryuta said that once operational, the centre with the capacity of 200 people, would contribute to improved access of youth to academic, skill development and better employment opportunities. He stated that the students would not only receive training but also have opportunities to compete among themselves and learn from each other. The Ambassador stressed that to facilitate the commencement of the centres operation, the Embassy called upon Japanese private companies to supply second-hand 92 desktop computers, which was met with positive re-

sponses. “I am happy to announce that one of the representatives Mr Dino Bianchi of Toyota is here on behalf of other Japanese companies to witness the handover ceremony. “While we face the impact of Covid-19 on our economy and labour market, the initiative that was launched in the form of handover of the youth centre is only a modest step,” he said. Mr Ryuta noted that by combining the forces of teachers, community members, young people, and politics there would be power to overcome the pandemic. And Higher Education

Minister, Brian Mushimba, who was represented by Chief Planning officer, Succeed Mubanga, said that in its mandate to improve education, the ministry works with different stakeholders. He said that to date the Japan government has undertaken over 172 projects across the country, a sign of its commitment to uplift the lives of many people in Zambia. Mr Mushimba noted that it was important that quality should be in the programmes that the centre would be providing to promote self-employment among the beneficiaries. “We need to give the youth quality training so that they employ them-

ZANIS reports that the District Commissioner said this when he made an impromptu visit to FRA Lwakela satellite depot. “Government is committed to improving the livelihoods of farmers in this province as demonstrated from the disbursement of K17 million to the region for cash pur-

Mr Kawangu has since instructed the District Joint Operations Committee (DJOC) members to monitor the situation and ensure that the illegal selling of maize to neighbouring countries is halted. Meanwhile, a 73-year-old woman, Ms Mulenga Kamwefu, of Chafilwa Village, has expressed gratitude to the government for releasing the money to pay them. Ms Kamwefu said the government should continue to help the vulnerable to mitigate poverty. – ZANIS.

PRIVATE SECTORS RECOVER

By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

ZAMBIA’S private sector last month experienced signs of recovery despite the persistent contraction to record the highest Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) reading since the COVID-19 outbreak in March. This is despite the sector recording further reductions in output, new orders, and employment for the sixth successive month while input costs rose for first time in four months. Stanbic Bank’s PMI for July 2020 indicates circumstantial evidence suggested COVID-19 was the main factor affecting business conditions even in July. Head of Global Markets, Victor Chileshe, however said there were signs that the worst of the downturn could have passed with the PMI reading posting its highest reading since March 2020. Mr Chileshe said in a statement that

this was despite the business conditions continuing to deteriorate. “What we saw in July was that the rates of decline in output and new orders eased further from what we had in May despite business conditions continuing to deteriorate during the month. Operating conditions have now contracted for 17 successive months,” he said. Mr Chileshe explained that at 44.6, the headline PMI for July recorded a marginal improvement on June’s 42.3. He however indicated that the figure still represented an overall marked decline in business conditions across the Zambian private sector. IHS Markit Public Relations Manager, Katherine Smith, said her organisation saw a similar trend in business activity which decreased at a noticeable yet softer pace due to the conditions created by COVID-19. Ms Smith explained that difficulties

Zambian Breweries ventures into hand-sanitiser manufacturing By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

ZAMBIAN Breweries is engaging potential partners to set up a project for ethanol from cassava for manufacturing of hand sanitisers. Meanwhile, demand for alcohol has remained high despite the closure or bars and night clubs. The company has started discussing with some partners how to use the local sourcing to benefit small scale farmers by buying cassava from them, Zambian Breweries Country Director, Jose Daniel Moran. Mr Moran said Zambian Breweries would use the crops to produce ethanol and hand sanitisers. He was speaking on episode thirteen of the Anakazi Banking Online Conversations. “We want people to benefit and not import we are looking at the opportunity and see what is available locally and work together. “It is great to see a number of companies interested on how we can deal with this type of projects. We are going to keep investing in the local market, keep capacity because we believe in it,” Mr Moran said. Meanwhile, Mr Moran said the company was experieincing a good demand of alcohol from consumers despite bars and nightclub being closed. Mr Moran however explained that top brands the company used to sell the most had currently reduced. The packs, he said, were are selling more. “You will be surprised that even with closure of bars, restaurants and night clubs, still we are seeing a good demand because the consumers are out there. “The consumer has changed from going out and having a drink and socialize to being at home and that has quite been a big learning. It is not only here in Zambia but it is happening across all our markets,” he said. Mr Moran said the company had prioritised initiatives which would keep the businesses healthy and afloat post Covid-19 pandemic.

in securing new orders meant a lack of pressure on operating capacity. Companies, she said, were therefore able to work through backlogs of work again and scaled back employment for the sixth month running. “Moreover, the rate of job cuts quickened from that seen in June. Purchasing activity and inventories were also reduced amid a reluctance to hold excess stocks at a time of weak demand and pressure on cash flow,” Ms Smith said. She noted that Covid-19 continued to impact suppliers’ delivery times, with delays on the delivery of inputs from abroad due to border closures widely reported by firms. She added that total input costs ticked up in July for the first time in four months. Ms Smith said the overall increase was centred on higher purchase prices, which rose due to currency weakness.

Govt urged to fund ZRA adequately to enhance operations - PMRC POLICY for Monitoring and Research Centre (PMRC) has urged government to support the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) operations through provision of adequate funding to enhance its activities. According to the PMRC Research and Analysis Division report, ZRA has achieved a number of milestones in tax administration attributing the successes to the changes in tax reforms. The report stated that due to the changes in system updates such as the addition of Value Added Tax (VAT) as well as the introduction of online tax transactions (e-services), ZRA has effectively improved tax services on both parts of the customer and the government. It noted that implementation of socialeconomic development projects in the country has escalated due to the increased contribution of tax revenue to the national budget. PMRC stated that infrastructure development such as the construction of and rehabilitation of roads, schools, health facilities, provision of national security have been achieved due to increased tax revenue collection. “The ZRA system has proven to be better than the previous tax system, in that it is more capable of capturing more revenue when the economy is doing well and has similarly recorded revenue declines during bad times when the economy is in a recession due to it being a semi-autonomous institution that uses modern management methods and often updates its systems,” the report pointed out. It however indicated that ZRA has also lost tax revenue because of challenges such as lack of trained tax inspectors, thereby undervaluing property which leads to less tax revenue collected.

“Despite the ZRA having in place the taxpayer’s education and advisory services programme and taxpayer charter, many Zambians remain tax illiterate. ZRA needs to develop training and dissemination strategies in order to increase tax literacy, this could help bring basic understanding of the tax system and could encourage tax compliance In addition, PMRC observed that most Zambians have low levels of tax literacy because ZRA has very little programs to enhance tax knowledge among taxpayers adding that the Authority further struggles with tax avoidance due to some loopholes. Hence the report recommended that continued support both financially and materially is needed to enable ZRA increase capacity in revenue collection through implementation of various programmes. “Despite the ZRA having in place the taxpayer’s education and advisory services programme and taxpayer charter, many Zambians remain tax illiterate. ZRA needs to develop training and dissemination strategies in order to increase tax literacy, this could help bring basic understanding of the tax system and could encourage tax compliance,” PMRC explained. The Report further stated that it was inevitable to simplify the tax law to increase understanding and compliance and also strengthen the law on double taxation agreements to prevent tax evasion by multinational corporations -ZANIS

Africa’s outlook positive - AfDB By BUUMBA CHIMBULU

AFRICA’S outlook remains positive despite the impact of the Covid-19, says African Development Bank (AfDB) Acting Senior Vice President, Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala. Ms Tshabalala said the positive outlook for Africa was reinforced by the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). She explained that the AfCFTA seeks to deepen regional integration across the continent and allow the free movement of people and trade across borders. During a recent virtual conference hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and its partners. “There is a tremendous opportunity for Indian industry to work together with the Bank in sectors such as power generation and transmission, energy, agricultural transformation, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, technology, transportation, and industrialization,” Ms Tshabalala said. She highlighted business potential in Africa, noting that the continent had great prospects for investors, with a growing consumer market that Indian firms could not afford to miss. “AfDB is seeking to expand the number of bankable projects in Africa and has set aside US$100 million for project preparation activities in low-income countries. It is also keen to mobilise greater private sector participation in these projects from all countries,” Ms Tshabalala said. David Rasquinha, Managing Director of the Export-Import Bank of India, underscored the need to expand Indian financial inflows to Africa by expanding the Indian banking network. He said India and Africa could work together in areas such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals, the financial sector and infrastructure development. Akhilesh Mishra, India’s Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, urged the private sector to consider investing in youth and start-ups because those sectors have enormous potential for employment generation. He noted that aside from the longterm funding traditionally provided as official development assistance, African countries would require more targeted short-term financing. AfDB and India have a longstanding strategic partnership dating back almost 40 years to 1982

‘Expedite Kipushi one-stop mbia. border facility .co.zm construction’ By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

R5997-30-31

THE construction of a one-stop border facility at Kipushi in Mushindamo district should be expedited to enhance trade between Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). North-western Province Minister, Nathaniel Mubukwanu, said the facility was of great importance to the Government, hence the need to expedite the process. He said once a one-stop facility was constructed, trade between Zambia and the neighbouring DRC would be enhanced. Mr Mubukwanu said it is for this reason that Government had invested heavily in infrastructure development such as the road sector and air transport to take advantage of the country’s regional location to enhance trade with other countries. “In terms of trade, we know that Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo are some of our neighbours whom we share the longest borders. Therefore, it is imperative that we invest in suitable state of art equipment that will be able to facilitate the easy movement of goods and services in region, he said. The Minister said this when a team of experts from the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry and other Ministries called on him in Solwezi. He said the construction of a one-stop border facility in Mushuindamo district was a welcome move and assured of unwavering support to the project. Mr Mubukwanu said Government had invested substantial amount of money in the Kipushi border road, stating that this must be matched by the appropriate facility at the border.

TODAY marks exactly twelve (12) months to the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections. This period is extremely short given what needs to be done by political parties as well as the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). These include, 1. Updating of the voter register

2. Delimitation of constituencies (if any) 3. Creation of new polling stations 4. Dissolving of Parliament and Councils 5. Party Conventions or Conferences 4. Adoption of candidates 6. Printing of ballot papers We should always remember that election is a process and not the actual voting day. This process, most of the time, can determine the outcome. It is, therefore, important to follow this process with keen interest. For instance, a bad adoption of a candidate can make a party lose even before the pol…

MY VIEW ON CURRENT EDUCATION SCENARIO Dear editor,

N

ON-EXAMINATION classes are obviously missing out as we all know. HOW CAN WE TRY TO NORMALISE THE SITUATION? We can, maybe, share the learning process by saying: (i) EXAMINATION CLASSES go to school MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, and FRIDAYS. (ii) NON-EXAMINATION CLASSES go to school on TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS. (iii) Schools with a lot of learners can do the usual double shift with an incentive for teachers for their tireless efforts. Schools with a double shift can interchange learners’ reporting time every week.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR 2020: Examinations for 2020 can be shifted to March 2021 and be normalised as follows: #1. Examinations for 2021 can be done in February 2022. #2. Examinations for 2022 can be written in January 2023.

#3. Examinations for 2023 can NOW go back to December 2023. This IDEA will help our colleagues in the EDUCATION PRIVATE SECTOR, who are undoubtedly GREAT PARTNERS in driving this economy in all ways, survive like our colleagues in the Government Institutions. This

will afford every learner at home an opportunity to become active because they will be kept busy with school work including Ba mature. No Learner Left Behind (NLLB). JOSEPH SIKANYIKA

Dear Editor, BEFORE you crucify Southern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary on the list of six artists selected to represent the province at the launch of the K30 million Empowerment Fund for artists, are you aware that the six artists are not the final beneficiaries of the fund? Their role for now is to learn how this fund is accessed then come back and share with their colleagues here in the province. So there is nothing to fume about here balombwana. Quite allright, you would have wanted that favourite artist of yours to be among them but listen, if you advise him or her to remain calm and wait for the time to apply, they might provide a best business plan that will earn them something from these funds. The six artists are just bearers of the message from Government to all the artists in the province. I feel let's not throw mud on Mr. Kennedy K. Mubanga and his team at the province for now because this is just the beginning. Let me draw you back a bit in case you have forgotten colleagues. When Southern Province was about to host the Tourism Investment Exposition in Livingstone, there was a suggestion that the EXPO theme songs be done by BIG national artists such as JK, Chester, Macky-2 etc. I remember the accusation was that artists in the province are not united and that they have a bone to chew with the government of the day. It is the same Mr Mubanga you are calling to insult today who defended CUUNDU music artists saying they must do a theme song for their own province of origin. During the EXPO, I'm told from the K130, 000-plus someone somewhere suggested that local artists be given a K15, 000 to share the five of them. It is Mr Mubanga again who fought for the raising of the figures to what they got, the man was almost hated with some superiors threatening to fire him. Really, have we forgotten? My advice to the artists in the province, just familiarise yourself with the process of applying to get these funds through the provincial arts council and you might be that lucky one. Peddling lies saying the artists are being assembled to do a song for a political party are not there. Let's accept Cuundu music has been uplifted by Mr Mubanga who has the passion to see it grow. HOUSE-BREAKING IN NDOLA SPREADS TO MINSUNDU By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

N

DOLA, known to many as the friendly city in the country, is slowly becoming a den of criminals as most new residential areas are now a targeted of menacing thieves. For the past seven months, Mitengo area has been a hotspot for housebreaking and thefts, but now the criminality has spread to other new residential areas such as Minsundu and Hillcrest Extension. Criminal activities are slowly spreading to other townships in the city, a situation that is worrying many residents. But the Zambia Police Service said it was ready to bring down those that would want to make the city ugly. Minsundu residential area has been the latest target by

thieves who are mostly targeting vehicle accessories and household goods. The thieves jump over boundary walls to steal items from vehicles and also burgle into houses and lay their hands on electronic items such as television sets. A family in the area had its bags of maize stolen by the

thieves who also broke in one of the vehicles but failed to steal the music system and other valuables. Residents interviewed said the thieves were crossing from the nearby Nkwazi Township, which was previously known as senior compound. "We will not allow bu-

glers to have their own way and destroy other people's homes and property. We will bring them down in no time," Copperbelt Province Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga assured. Ms Katanga warned that time was almost up for the thieves as the police service was doing all it could to increase patrols in such areas. She said that those that would be found wanting would face the wrath of the law. Ms Katanga however appealed to members of the public to report suspicious people to the police, stating that most of them were known in those same areas. Residents in Minsundu appealed to the police to start patrolling the area, which is only separated from Nkwazi Township by a railway line.

SAVE Environment and People Agency (SEPA) with support from Oxfam and the Ministry of Mines has empowered women engaged in mining activities with technical know-how. The women will also be tutored on innovation in order to survive in the mining industry which for many years has been dominated by men. SEPA Chief Executive Officer, Mailes Zulu, said women had been trained on environmental management, safety and gender-related issues in the mining activities. She was speaking to the Daily Nation in Kitwe. Ms Zulu said women were also trained on how to manage the environment during the course of their activities. "Women are given the skills on how to deal with environmental issues because mining activities not only degrade the land but also pollute the underground water through illicit deposits of mine waste," she said. Ms Zulu explained that women were taught that they needed to take care of the environment each time they carried out mining activities. She said that the training in mining environmental management included the exist plan regarding

what would happen to the mine holes. She observed that after mining, the miners had an option of either burying the mine holes or transforming them into fish ponds, which were also another money generating venture. Ms Zulu said women having basic knowledge on safety measures would help them reduce negative accidents associated with the activities. The safety measures which were taught to women, she noted, included skills on how to protect their children from mining threats. She said women were given serious warning to never allow their children access to the the mine environment. "This warning is in line with the international protocols which protect the rights of children from hazardous activities. “Zambia is a signatory to the international protocols that protect the rights of children and women who will be found wanting risk not only losing their mining rights but prosecution," she said. Ms Zulu further disclosed that gender issues were emphasized during the training to remove the notion that mining activities were an exclusive right for men. She said since women were also involved in the mining activities, there was need for men to respect and embrace them. She said that it was not only about mining that mattered but value addition to the industry which was required.

Encroachments a major challenge, says Nkana Water boss By ROGERS KALERO

UNCOORDINATED developments in various parts of Kitwe have led to encroachments and rampant vandalism on the water and sewer installations, Nkana Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) Managing Director Diana Makwaba has said. According to the Managing Director, the sad development was affecting the water utility’s service delivery in the city.

Ms Makwaba said uncoordinated developments had been one of the major challenges for the water utility company in terms of providing quality services because some people were constructing structures on the sewer and water facilities. Ms Makwaba was speaking yesterday in her presentation at NWSC offices in Kitwe during the tour of the company by Water Development, Sanitation and Envi-

ronmental Protection Minister, Jonas Chanda. "We have been working with the local authorities to deal with the problem of uncoordinated developments which has been one of the major challenges. Uncoordinated developments have been a big challenge because people construct on sewer and water pipes. "Some people are allocated plots on sewer and water pipes where they construct

structures, and in the process they damage the installations thereby affecting service delivery,'' Ms Makwaba said. Ms Makwaba also said phase one of the Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Project (NWSSP) had contributed significantly to the improvement of people's lives in communities through the construction of Ventilated Improved Toilets (VIP) in Wusakile and Amro

And Dr Chanda said the decision to suspend the Kitwe and Lusaka councils over illegal allocation of land was a right decision and hoped that it would help curb the illegal land deals. Dr Chanda said illegal allocation of land was affect-

ing planned development because some structures were being built on NWSC water and sewer and water pipes. "I hope this will send a signal to other councils to desist from engaging in such illegal activities. We need to plan our developments properly together with commercial utilities so that they can equally plan on how best to deliver services,'' Dr Chanda said.

UNIP DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY IN CDF PROJECTS By ANDREW MUKOMA

A

LL implementing agencies of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) funded projects must be transparent in disbursing funds, UNIP has demanded. UNIP said that only stalled projects must be prioritized for funding before new ones could be approved. Southern Province Chairman Captain Robert Mukengami said that for constituencies like Livingstone, needed to do much more through CDF. He said, therefore, that the 2020 CDF must be put to good use and if possible, implementing agencies should only allocate resources to

Sinazongwe MP pleads for ‘abused’ workers By ANDREW MUKOMA GOVERNMENT should take keen interest in the welfare of workers at the former ZAMBEEF farms which is now being run by a foreign entity, Sinazongwe Member of Parliament Gift Sialubalo has said.

Zambians urged to promote unity

Mr Sialubalo said that the workers were being subjected to use ploughs with oxen instead of truckers, hence the need for the Ministry of Labour to take interest in the welfare of employees. In an interview yesterday, Mr Sialubalo said he had engaged Southern Province Minister Dr

commended for releasing the 2020 CDF on time. "We don't know whether it is because it is a UPND controlled council that is why they are doing things deliberately to fail the Government of the day," the UNIP leader said.

ZAMBIANS should embrace each other in unity and love regardless one’s of political affiliation and tribe, the Sekute Royal Establishment in Kazungula District has advised. Chieftainess Joyce Nalucha Sekute observed that it was worrying that today in the country, people were slowly living in division. The traditional leader observed that disunity must not have a place in Zambia and that citizens must embrace the ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ motto She said the ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ motto, must to be safeguarded at all cost as it was a unifying factor coined

by the founding fathers. Chieftainess Sekute said this when Zambians for Unity, Peace and Development, (ZUPED) a NonGovernmental Organization paid a courtesy call on her at her Livingstone residence yesterday. The traditional leader urged other traditional leaders in the country to embrace all politicians without looking at one’s tribe or political party. ZUPED president Mary Ngoma in her goodwill message reiterated her organization’s call to denounce tribal politics while pushing the developmental agenda for all Zambians. Ms Ngoma said there could be no development where there was division. She observed that political violence should not be allowed in a democracy nation like Zambia.

happening in my area. This is why I and the provincial minister fought hard to have an officer there so that whatever is happening in the district, Government is aware. "The provincial minister and I fought tooth and nail to ensure that we have a labour officer there to be inspecting these employers. That’s how come we have an officer who is going there," he said. Mr Sialubalo said if the issue was not properly handled, workers would continue to be subjected to poor work conditions.

DAILY ASTROLOGICAL PREDICTION FOR 15 AUGUST, 2020

ARIES Without realizing how or when it happened, you may find yourself in the middle of a conflict today. But all you need to do is call upon your mediation skills and you’ll navigate these potentially stormy waters without any difficulty. Your smile can make peace. What you should always remember is that people want to be liked. Try to keep everyone cheerful, and delegate responsibility to the people who really deserve it.

TAURUS Everyday items and common conversations could take on a heavier meaning today. You’re entering a phase in which you have a great deal of discernment, so you’ll be able to see the hidden meaning behind what people are saying or doing. The challenge today is to stay neutral about events, because you know things that other people don’t know. Now is not the time to blow the whistle and get people riled up. GEMINI A blast from the past could be coming back on the scene, and they have some big plans in store for you. They just might offer the missing piece between you and several opportunities, including greater

wealth and a hotter romance. Keep an eye out for unfamiliar phone numbers or e-mail addresses, because everything isn’t exactly as you assume it to be. Sometimes relationships or other types of connections are circular, and they come back around to make things complete.

CANCER While your focus has been on other people in your life lately, thinking completely about your current relationships isn’t going to be possible. But that is a good thing. It’s time to get yourself refocused on who you are as an individual. You may be running the risk of losing yourself in the crowd. Ask yourself honestly if you’re working so hard on friendships and relationships with other people to avoid working hard on yourself. LEO Although you could be cast in the role of student, you could feel very empowered by the end of the day. Learning is something that takes time, but it offers more long-term rewards than you could ever imagine. It’s time to think about the big picture in your life and put off thinking about immediate gains. Put in the necessary time in order to better understand

what you’re about to enter into. Ask questions and feel good about doing so. There is no such thing as a stupid question!

VIRGO You’ll get along quite swimmingly today, due in part to some recent good fortune that has put a smile on your face. Watch out for conflict in the afternoon, when someone’s demands could cause you to lose your peaceful demeanor. Before you make a scene, remember that you haven’t got the time to deal with people who are switching things up at the last minute, so why pretend that you do? Be up front when people propose things that just won’t work. LIBRA If you’re starting a new job, don’t put pressure on yourself to be a superstar right off the bat. Give yourself all the time you need to get a handle on your new routine, new environment, or the new group of folks around you. The empathy shown to you now will encourage you to relax and just be yourself. There is freedom in letting go of the expectations you put on yourself. Your job now is to learn, not to impress. SCORPIO There is a direct relationship

between how easy something is and how worthwhile it is to pursue. If someone is batting their eyelashes at you, dying for attention, they’re not the person you should be checking out right now. Seek out the person who doesn’t work so hard for the approval of others. This person isn’t playing hard to get. They’re just being who they are. Talk to them. It might be challenging, but it will be worth it.

SAGITTARIUS When you were a little kid, struggling to pedal your bike to the top of a big hill wasn’t that much fun, but coasting down the other side at a breakneck speed was positively thrilling. It’s all about putting in the effort required to get the most fun possible out of your day. If you feel you’re struggling or putting in more than your fair share of work, just keep in mind the wonderful reward that is waiting for you on the other side of that hill. CAPRICORN If you start this day feeling a little down, try to get outside for a walk as soon as you can. No matter what the weather is like, a big dose of fresh air will get you back on track. A blue mood is nothing to worry about. It could just be your mind telling you to slow down

a bit and ponder some new emotions that your heart is feeling. Taking a walk will give you the time you need to reset your brain and start feeling like yourself again. AQUARIUS Experiencing a different culture is the best way to learn more about what your own culture has taught you, and which parts of that lesson you might want to improve upon. Don’t be afraid of different types of music, food, dance, or theater. It might be uncomfortable or confusing at first, but in the end it will enrich your life and spark your creativity. Get out there and visit different worlds. If you can’t travel, there are movies, books, and websites! MADAGASCAR PRESIDENT'S HERBAL TONIC FAILS TO HALT COVID-19 SPIKE

ospitals in Madagascar have been struggling to cope with a surge of Covid-19 cases, while the president has been promoting an unproven product he says can cure the disease despite the World Health Organization (WHO) warning against using untested remedies. Cases have quadrupled in the past month in the Indian Ocean island, with more than 13,000 infections and 162 deaths from coronavirus, which has spread to all but one of its 22 regions. Despite the spike, President Andry Rajoelina stands by

the herbal concoction called Covid-Organics, which was launched to great fanfare in April. It is produced by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research from the artemisia plant - the source of an ingredient used in a malaria treatment - and other Malagasy plants. The drink has been marketed as a prevention and remedy - and for the last four months been offered to children at school. Earlier in the month the

president was out again distributing the tonic, along with essentials such as rice, oil, sugar, to poor communities in the capital, Antananarivo. He faced criticism for drawing crowds during a lockdown, but his attitude remained upbeat: “The epidemic won’t last, it’s only passing through and we will defeat it.” He also suggested that the number of infected people was not high in suburbs of the capital where the free distribution

of the drink had started a few months ago. The WHO says it welcomes innovations based on traditional remedies but it wants scientific evidence before backing their use. So far no results of clinical trials have been made public - though that has not stopped stop the tonic from becoming a source of African pride for some. Free shipments have been sent to dozens of African countries. - BBC

New Zealand extends Auckland lockdown for 12 days New Zealand has had success containing coronavirus, and went 102 days without a community transmission. The origin of the cluster in Auckland - New Zealand's largest city with a population of 1.5 million - is still being investigated. The PM said the decision to extend the restrictions was “in keeping with our cautionary approach and New Zealand’s philosophy of going

NEW Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a 12-day extension of the country’s Covid-19 restrictions, after a cluster of cases grew to 29. There are four “alert levels” in New Zealand, and Auckland has been on Level 3 since Wednesday. The rest of the country is on Level 2, and Ms Ardern said both would be extended.

hard and going early”. She said that, in 12 days’ time, she thought “the cluster will be identified, will be isolated, and we can move to Level 2 in Auckland with confidence”. All 29 cases “remain linked to one cluster centred in Auckland”, Ms Ardern said, adding that 38 people are in government quarantine. But she said that, although the first cases of the new

outbreak were confirmed in Auckland on Tuesday, contact-tracing had uncovered an earlier case, involving a shop worker in the Mt Wellington district of Auckland who became sick on 31 July. “In terms of the ongoing investigation to identify where the virus originated from, there are still no clear connections at this point,” Ms Ardern said. - BBC

As UAE hails Israel accord, silence from Saudi Arabia DUBAI/RIYADH - As media and people in the United Arab Emirates hailed the Gulf state’s deal to normalise relations with Israel as a diplomatic victory that helps the Palestinians, silence reigned in Saudi Arabia, longtime figurehead of regional policy towards Israel. Analysts see the surprise UAE-Israel agreement announced on Thursday as a strategic boost for the UAE’s regional and global standing that could put it ahead of its powerful Saudi neighbour and ally, especially in critical relations with Washington. Saudi Arabia is the Gulf’s largest economy and the world’s biggest oil exporter, but the UAE has in recent years become increasingly assertive in its own foreign policy, especially in regional

hot spots such as Libya, Sudan and Yemen. In July last year the UAE said it was withdrawing its troops from Yemen where it had jointly with Saudi Arabia led a Western-backed coalition fighting the Iranaligned Houthis since 2015. The accord was a rare triumph for U.S. President Donald Trump in Middle East diplomacy ahead of his Nov. 3 re-election bid. But, should he be defeated by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, the UAE could gain an advantage over Riyadh in relations with the United States. “The move positions the UAE nicely should Biden win, as it will help smooth things over with (the U.S.) Congress and, by doing so, leave Saudi Arabia outflanked and more exposed than ever before,” said Neil Quilliam, associate fellow with Chatham House and managing director of Azure Strategy. “This must be the real concern for the Saudi leadership right now - and the lead calculation on how to respond to the UAE-Israel move.” - REUTERS

Mwenya cries foul By MUKWIMA CHILALA KONKOLA Mine Police president Gideon Mwenya is concerned that the planned meeting between FAZ president Andrew Kamanga and Super League clubs will disadvantage other players in the forthcoming elections. Mwenya, a vice presidential candidate in the forthcoming Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) general elections. He is concerned that Kamanga will be meeting a big constituent of councilors when the Association was yet to hold its polls. He claimed this would be viewed as campaigning. Mwenya said Kamanga being a player himself in the FAZ elections, should instead delegate the General Secretary and other secretarial staff so as to level the playing field for all. He said that the FAZ president should be sincere not to take advantage of his incumbency by going out campaigning in the name of meetings. “The FA president (Kamanga) is an interested party in this coming election, so let him not attend that consultative meeting that will be held tomorrow. The secretary can brief the clubs on whatever suggestions that will come up. Who knows what happens tomorrow suppose there was a change of leadership then what

Arsenal sign Willian on free transfer ARSENAL have signed Brazil midfielder Willian on a threeyear deal after the 32-yearold’s contract with Chelsea expired. The Blues had offered the player a new deal but were unwilling to match what the Gunners had on the table. “I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. “We had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions.” Willian made 339 appearances for Chelsea after signing from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala for £30m in 2013. He won five major honours with the Blues, including two Premier League titles and the Europa League, and was voted the club’s players’

happens, it would mean most of the plans would be thrown away,’’ Mwenya said. “We want to be genuine in the way we are managing the game because if we are going to be doing things out of personal gain then we are going to be setting a bad precedence that will be difficult to reverse,” he said. And Mwenya has called on relevant stakeholders to speed up the process of meeting with FIFA so as to get done away with the wrangles that had engulfed football. Mwenya says he was looking forward to seeing the game in Zambia go back to the unifying factor that it was before unlike what had been transpiring the last few years that had seen the game divided. In the aftermath of the abridged league that came to an end last week FAZ president Kamanga has today called for a consultative meeting with Super league clubs that will focus on the next season.

player of the year twice. “He is a player that gives us a lot of versatility - he can play in three or four different positions,” added Arteta. “He has the experience of everything in the football world but still has the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs. “I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come.” Arsenal finished eighth in the Premier League last season, while Chelsea were fourth and secured a Champions League spot. However, the Gunners did beat their London rivals in the FA Cup final - a game Willian missed through injury - to make sure of a place in the Europa League. Willian follows compatriot David Luiz in moving from Chelsea to Arsenal, with the defender having made the switch last August. Arsenal technical director Edu said: “I know him very well, since a long time ago because we’ve been working together for the Brazilian national team. -BBC

SERENA WILLIAMS COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT SISTER VENUS AT TOP SEED OPEN

F

ORMER world number one Serena Williams came from a set down to beat her sister Venus 3-6 6-3 6-4 and reach the quarter-finals of the Top Seed Open. Serena also trailed 4-2 in the deciding set but claimed four straight games to win a high-quality match in Kentucky. It was the 31st competitive singles match between the sisters, with Serena now having won 19 times to Venus' 12. "I honestly don't know how I was able to pull it out at the end," said 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena. "I have been losing a lot of those tight sets so I said to myself that I really needed to win, just for my game and my confidence." Top seed Serena broke seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus, 40, in the first game of the match but faded to lose the first set 6-3 in 41 minutes, before taking the second by the same score in 50 minutes. Serena, 38, broke first in the final set but Venus fought back and looked to be on course for victory at

4-2 up. However, Serena, who also had to come from behind against Bernarda Pera in her opening match, hit some crucial winners to reach the last eight of her first tournament in six months. She will face either fellow American Shelby Rogers or Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez in the quarter-finals of the behind-closeddoors event. In Thursday's first last-16 tie, Switzerland's Jil Teichmann beat Ukrainian fifth seed Yulia Putintseva 6-2 6-2. "I didn't come here to win for the first time in my career, I just came here to get some matches and see what happens," added Serena, who is preparing to play in this year's US Open, which starts on 31 August. Her chances of winning a 24th Grand Slam singles title in New York have been boosted by several top-20 players withdrawing from the event. Defending champion Bianca Andreescu, who beat Serena in last year's final, became the latest to pull out of the tournament in New York on Thursday. -BCC

Congolese Kadjob joins ZANACO FC By MICHAEL MIYOBA

SENSATIONAL ZANACO FC have begun their quest to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2020/2021 MTN/FAZ Super Division with the signing of Congolese defender Joel Kapend Kadjob from Nkwazi FC. ZANACO FC General Manager Malon Kananda confirmed the development in an interview noting that the former Nkwazi defender had signed a two year deal which will keep him at Sunset Stadium until 2022. Kananda said Kadjob would add value to ZANACO who missed out on qualification for CAF Games after

finishing the local league on sixth position. Kananda reaffirmed ZANACO’S commitment to strengthen the team before the new league resumes in October. “Kadjob has signed a two year contract and we believe the player will add a lot of value to the team. “We are planning for the new season and we feel if we bring in one or two more players we will be ready,” Kananda said. He hailed the great relationship between Nkwazi and ZANACO which has seen the two teams exchanging a number of players, including the head coach Chris Kaunda

who is also a former Nkwazi coach. Kadjob becomes the fifth former Nkwazi player to move to Zanaco in the recent past after Eric Owusu, Belchance Makiese, Kebson Kamanga

Simeone defends Atletico after Champions League exit DIEGO Simeone said Atletico Madrid were weighed down by the pressure and intensity of a long season as they crashed out of the Champions League on Thursday against Leipzig. Leipzig will play Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals on Tuesday after Tyler Adams' deflected shot in the 88th minute earned them a shock 2-1 victory in Lisbon. Atletico's Joao Felix had earlier scored a penalty to cancel out Dani Olmo's opener. Defeat ends a disappointing season for Atletico, who finished third in La Liga, 17 points behind Real Madrid. "We didn't have that physical sharpness or rhythm,"

said Simeone afterwards. "At the end of a season with so much pressure, so much need to get into the Champions League, and the need to integrate new players. "We came with a lot of hope. The feeling is a lot of bitterness but I know the players gave everything. They gave it their all." Questions will be asked about Simeone's future and his ability to turn this Atletico side into winners again, while sticking to his defensive style of play. "I have nothing to say to anyone about what we did this season. It's a good season, third in La Liga, quarter-finalists in Champions League," Simeone said.

"Next season will be tough, very tough." Simeone admitted Leipzig were the better team and deserved to go through to the semis. "They were better, faster," he added. "We gave everything and we leave with dignity, with an opponent who deserves their victory." -SUPERSPORT

THE curtains to the dramatic Zambian Super League 2019/2020 season came to a close last Sunday with Kitwe based club Nkana bagging their 13th title. Nkana’s triumph stretched their unmatched record as the most successful club in the domestic league. Dramatic as it was, the 2019/2020 season provided some mouth dropping action which saw four teams securing continental berths. Nkana and Forest Rangers qualified to the CAF Champions League while Choma based Green Eagles and Napsa Stars will be campaigning in the second tier of CAF Confederation Cup. The biggest puzzle whenever continental representatives have been ‘unmasked’ has been whether they can compete at such a big level and bring pride to the nation. For the first time in nine years, giants Zesco United will not be representing the country in any of the two CAF competitions after missing out on the four slots. But can the four compete favorably at continental level? For Green Eagles who have been consistent in the last two seasons, they will need to add more flair to their squad which comprises entirely of local players. An addition of a few foreign players could add a bit more life but with the

club protocols in mind, hunting for some great local talent wouldn’t be a bad idea. Nkana are definitely a sure competitor with some good continental experience in their bag. They could have missed out on the ongoing CAF competitions but are surely expected to come back strong. Their concentration could probably be on keeping key players (which they have been struggling to do). With their experience they might do well. It is on the two ‘unfamiliar’ envoys Forest Rangers and Napsa Stars where many have cast doubt. The two sides are new to continental football and still have milk in their mouths to compete. However, we have seen debutants even in European tournaments doing fine. Atalanta, Red Bull Leipzig are among the teams that have shone in the UEFA Champions League this season. Some big money moves of highly rated local players could help them in their quest for continental glory. Getting a couple of players on loan deals can also be a good idea just to aid in widening the pool for selection. Quality foreign players should also be on the execution plan for the two inexperienced sides. Foreign players provide the balance needed in the team, players from certain regions possess mental and physical strength that local players may lack. So getting quality foreign players and incorporating them could propel the sides to refreshing waters. Technical benches must also be equipped and bolstered. It will require comprehensive planning for the clubs’ managements. It is my hope that the four teams will bring glory to the nation. who are scared because INDENI makes a return into the Super Division after six years but me, I’ve been in the Super Division and I know what it takes to win a game and I know what I have to do for the team to win games,” he said. Chilufya said his main target will be to help INDENI cement their position in the Super League before considering a top four finish. He said INDENI has a lot of great players but there is need for the club to invest in new and young players below the age of 26 to compete fairly in the new league set to resume in October. Chilufya said his main target as coach is to make his own name by helping INDENI achieve greatness as they compete among the best teams in the league. “I’m not the best but I want to be among the best coaches and so I joined INDENI and with the spirit the management have, I know that we can achieve with the support the team is receiving from the new executive,” Chilufya said.
