ZNFU WARNS GOVT Price K10
Vol. 6. Issue 2595
Monday May 11, 2020
By BENNIE MUNDANDO
T
HE Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) is alarmed by revelations that some millers are pushing for a duty waiver for wheat imports which will result in Zambia losing US$8 million in revenue and leave local farmers destitute once the market is flooded. The union has since warned that it was watching to see which Government officials would
authorise a waiver, which it described as a mischief. Early this year, millers asked stakeholders to allow them import 100, 000 tonnes of wheat so that they could blend it with the local product and then export the surplus to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where the market has been created. The total tonnage would cost around US$40 million and is supposed to attract a 15 percent duty and a surcharge of 5 percent once imported.
What the source said
Some millers, with the help of some people in Government, are pushing for a duty waiver. If Government is going to entertain the waiver, it means that not only are we going to lose revenue in excess of US$8 million, some ungrateful millers will export more and then the local farmer will have no market for their wheat,”
...as Zambia risks losing $8m in wheat scandal. On Page 3

KENYA’S opposition leader Raila Odinga yesterday denounced Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli for his Covid-19 policies that have raised fears of runaway coronavirus crisis in the region. Raila, a close friend of Magufuli, also revealed that the Tanzanian president had refused to heed advice from other regional leaders, including President Uhuru Kenyat-
ta, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame to abandon his unconventional policies on the disease. He said his own efforts to reach out to the Tanzanian president have been futile, and Magufuli is yet to respond to messages left on his automatic answering machine. Story on Page 3
