THE church has condemned reports being circulated by the UPND to some diplomats that government intended to bar or even assassinate Hakainde Hichilema because he was destined to win the 2021 elections.

Last week a UPND delegation led by Party Chairperson Mutale Nalumango and accompanied by among others Gary Nkombo and, Cholwe Beyani held a meeting with a European Ambassador at which they presented findings of an Israeli election strategist group which they have hired which projected an outright win for Hakainde Hichilema in the 2021 elections.

KENYA Sunday recorded the highest number of daily Covid-19 infections since March 13, a development likely to inform the outcome of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s crisis meeting with governors on Monday.

According to the Health ministry, 960 people tested positive out of 8,261 samples that were tested.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe in a statement said Nairobi recorded the highest number of new cases at 510 followed by Kajiado (102), Kiambu (100) and Machakos (58).

The surging infections in counties neighbouring the capital indicate the impact of Mr Kenyatta’s decision to lift containment measures and reopen the city county. In Nairobi, most of the

infections were recorded in Lang’ata, Westlands, Embakasi East, Starehe, Kibra, Dagoretti North, Embakasi West, [Pagethe 4] Kasarani, and Makadara. In Kiambu, infections were concentrated in Kiambu town, Githunguri, Ruiru and Thika while in Machakos, the cases were in Athi River.

A total of 276,415 tests have been conducted from which 280 deaths have been recorded. The total number of positive cases stands at 17,603.

Overall, Nairobi bears the highest number of people with the virus at 10,180 cases (58 percent), followed

by Mombasa (11 per cent), Kajiado (6 percent) and Busia (4 percent).

CHIEF MUKUNI GOES FOR CHITIMUKULU …As he defends HH

HIEF Mukuni of the Toka Leya people has come out guns blazing attacking the Bemba people’s Paramount Chief Chitimukulu for his revelation about the UPND and its leader, Hakainde Hichilema whom he has accused of plotting his dethronement.

In a scathing press statement, Chief Mukuni, a known UPND sympathizer, has defended the UPND and Mr Hichilema over accusations of plotting to dethrone the Bemba paramount chief in the event they formed government next year.

Last week, Chitimukulu revealed a plot to dethrone him should the UPND ascend to power and vowed to prevent that from happening. He has promised to decampaign the opposition party.

However, Senior chief Mukuni claimed that Bill 10 which Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people appears to be a proponent of is what will dethrone him and not UPND president Hakainde Hichilema.

ment on the matter but forced to do so because the circumstances in which the accusations were being made could longer be termed as ordinary.

He also said he found inconsistencies in the Mwine Lubemba's statement against Mr Hichilema.

“I therefore find the effort to drag Mr Hakainde Hichilema and Hon Milupi into the Bemba royal family in - fighting by His Majesty the Mwine Lubemba unfortunate, unfair, unnecessary, and overbearing and without a solid, sound basis and legal or moral justification.

“The evidence available and very much in the public domain is that Mr Hichilema has never exulted in the dethroning of His Majesty, but, contrary has on various occasions commiserated with him with unwavering support,” Senior Chief Mukuni.

He added, “The Chitimukulu appears to overwhelmingly depend on mere hearsay to find Mr Hichilema guilty by association, which by the law of natural justice is unjust and unacceptable and draws a dangerous precedent for future discourses.”

Further, he said, let me state that I find a lot of inconsistencies in the Mwine Lubemba's statement. Among many is His Majesty's assertions that 'the Bemba had no problem voting for other tribes, like they did for Kenneth Kaunda, Frederick Chiluba, Levy Mwanawasa, Rupiah Banda and Michael Sata'.

Stop stigma against Covid patients, says minister

HEALTH Minister Chitalu Chilufya has cautioned against stigmatization of Covid19 patients while praising those who have revealed their status as this helps with contact tracing.

Dr Chilufya said stigma should not disrupt the fight against Covid-19 and encouraged those who tested positive to reveal their status to help others.

“The people who are reporting public that they have Covid-19 are responsible people and would like to protect the people they came into contact with. If you do not want to go public, contact the people you came into contact with,” Dr. Chilufya said.

And Dr Chilufya disclosed that in the last 24 hours as at yesterday, Zambia had recorded 153 new Covid -19 cases out of 446 tests done while no death was record-

This is the reason why President Lungu has insistently stated that it is time for all of us to unite as a common front against Covid-19. It is not time to politicize it. It is time to face this formidable and virulent virus.”

“A number of our economic and social livelihoods are being disrupted by this pandemic and it is important that we deal with it first even as we mitigate the impact of various sectors, we have the imperative of dealing with Covid-19 itself first and it requires community and individuals action,” he said.

THOSE individuals who circulated information about me having died last Friday are at the epitome of wickedness and hatred, Nalikwanda United Party for National Development (UPND) Member of Parliament Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa has said.

And Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya has cautioned Zambians to stop stigma against covid patients as this would defeat the fight against the scourge as people will fear speaking out.

Speaking to the Daily Nation yesterday, Professor Lungwangwa said the fake news about his death had affected a lot of people globally as he was bombarded with phone calls from family, friends, and relatives after `news’ about his purported demise filtered through social media platforms.

“I am a member of the Pan African Parliaments and I had calls from across Africa. I am a member of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace and we have members from all over the world and so, people were calling.

“That included some of the colleagues I am with on the Sun Moon University as global vice president.

POLICE in Chililabombwe have arrested six UPND cadres for unlawful assembly and criminal trespass after they were found conducting elections in the bush which turned out to be a farm belonging to Patriotic Front (PF) Chair lady for Chililabombwe Naomi Mbulo Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga confirmed the incident and said police also impounded five vehicles, 15 carton boxes used as voting boxes and 13 campaign materials.

Asked if he had tested positive to COVID-19 and that this could have been the reason some people became malicious and claimed that he had died, Prof. Lungwangwa said he was negative.

“I did my test on Monday and the results came out negative. Even if I was positive, you cannot just create an imaginary story which is unverified. They should have gone to Parliament to find out. It should not be that way. I hope no other human being in our society will be subjected to that kind of evil,” he said.

Now the party has launched a diplomatic foray to solicit the support of Europeans Governments, alleging that Government was scheming to bar or at worst assassinate him.

However, the Bishops Council of Zambia has described the allegations as rubbish , saying assassination was not in the culture of Zambian politics. He added that it was unheard of for a foreign Government to directly interfere in local politics as was being envisaged by the ambassador.

“If it was assassination, they would have killed him when he did something stupid in Mongu but they let him go,” Bishops Council of Zambia, General secretary Bishop Abel Kaela.

The church also condemned the foreign interference in internal affairs, calling for the expulsion of the envoys involved because such actions would amount to rigging and inciting insurgency in a peaceful country.

Bishops Kaela said yesterday, it was dangerous for foreign countries to start funding opposition as this was recipe for anarchy and warned government to take firm action.

He said, it was important to find out if indeed South Africa and Angola governments were involved in this dirty scheme.

They told the ambassador that according to an analysis of voting patterns and voter turn out among other issues Hichilema would win the vote.

They told the ambassador that there were plans to stop him from standing and at worst assassinate him. They appealed for support to enable them win the election claiming that the Angolan and South African Governments were also supporting UPND. In response the ambassador promised logistical support to conduct campaigns for the election.

On the same day the Ambassador met another European Union Ambassador to inform him about the engagement with the UPND officials.

And contrary to diplomatic etiquette one European Government has accepted to assist the UPND with logistics to campaign.

The Ambassador representing the country has also undertaken to consider requesting the European Union (EU) to provide the UPND with financial support as well as logistics. The diplomatic initiative is now expected to culminate in a meeting between the UPND delegation and with EU Ambassadors in September.

ENFORCE STRICT COMPLIANCE THAT 472 COVID-19 infections and three deaths were recorded in 24 hours on Friday, is a frightening phenomenon which should trigger a sense of responsibility and care among all citizens in Zambia.

More depressing is the fact that cumulative deaths stand at 139 with 17 patients on oxygen; Zambian must upscale preventive measures and awareness programmes.

Health Minister, Chitalu Chilufya, for the umpteenth time emphasized the imperative need to observe health guidelines, but many citizens are still not buying into the narrative.

It is now commonplace for a horde of citizens on public buses, markets and other public places to speak, cough and sneeze from uncovered mouths.

Awareness programmes on social distancing are an academic exercise because people are commuting in public automobiles squeezed to the brim.

While the Health Minister would spend time stressing the mandatory social distancing, much thought has not been given to the sitting arrangement on buses.

Commuters sit shoulder-to-shoulder without masks on their faces.

Clearly, Government is aware about the obtaining situation on the buses and markets – prime area for fast-spreading of the virus.

If the sitting arrangement on buses cannot be adjusted just now, then Government must make it mandatory for crew members to police their passengers.

Secondly, Government must task the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and the Zambia Police Service traffic section to enforce mandatory mask-wearing on public vehicles.

Additionally, Government must task the local authorities to enforce mask-wearing in markets and bus stations which fall under their ambit.

Traffic police officers, who flood the roads at the end of each tax quarter, must this time around swarm the roads to inspect buses and taxis for face masks.

If indeed traffic officers are genuinely intended to save lives by ensuring compliance of traffic rules, why can’t the same officers work to save lives by ensuring every passenger has a mask on their faces!

What is the obstacle?

These officers must exude the same vigour on non-compliant passengers!

Similarly, the vicious council police officers who sprint across the streets to round-up vendors must use the same stamina in the markets to ensure traders and customers alike have masks on their faces.

The situation is desperate; critical and therefore authorities must equally unleash uncompromising officers to police disobedient and careless members of the public.

Invariably, the COVID-19 cases are high in the country, considering that there is a large segment of population which has not been tested.

Many asymptomatic persons are moving about and spreading the virus in buses, markets, townships, neighbourhood and whoever visits their homes.

There are also those who are symptomatic and avoiding getting to health facilities; this is the most dangerous group.

Many people are ignoring preventive measures out of ignorance while others are merely careless.

Whatever the case, all of them must be forced to wear masks because they are abrogating the Statutory Instruments relating to COVID-19 prevention.

The worst culprits are shuttling between beer dens and illegal shebeens to quench their insatiable appetite for beer.

Others are spotted in township street corners gulping opaque beer from the same unclean containers.

One wonders how a group of people would steep so low as to share opaque beer from the same narrow mouth of the pack. They also share cigarettes, puffing away from the same butt!

Thus state police and council police must be unleashed to enforce strict compliance of COVID-19 preventive measures.

RANK, TUTWA DARES SANGWA

RELINQUISH your State Counsel rank by writing to the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) and the President instead of hiding in your status to fight other people’s battles because it will not help you, Kabwe Central Member of Parliament has challenged lawyer John Sangwa.

Last week, Mr. Sangwa was quoted as saying the rank and dignity of State Counsel was not chivala mulomo, adding that being a member of LAZ did not abolish any lawyer’s freedom of expression.

This was in response to President Edgar Lungu’s appeal to the newly-elected LAZ executive to address the tendency by some State Counsels who were in the habit of openly demonising and insulting the executive when they are supposed to be advisors to the State.

The President had suggested that state counsels had the option of putting their concerns in writing to the Office of the President in line with the dignity of their status.

Mr. Sangwa, however, reacted to the call by the President by suggesting that if the status of State Counsel was to stop the recipients from speaking out on governance issues, then he was willing to relinquish

Following this, Mr. Ngulube has challenged Mr. Sangwa, who is his former lecturer, not to just talk but actualise his threat with action by writing to LAZ and the Republican President about his decision so that the judiciary could be notified of his decision.

He warned Mr. Sangwa against being used to fight other people’s battles but that since he had veered onto the political arena, he must officially join politics so that he could be taken as an opponent.

“I am aware that recently JPS, as we used

to call him 20 years ago, was apologising for attacking the Judiciary and he went to lengths of putting up a written apology. We all thought it was genuine. But today, he sounds like someone is stopping him from talking.

“To you JPS, the best arena for you is politics so that we take you on as our Opposition. Hiding in the rank of State Counsel to fight other people’s battles won’t help. So if you are serious about it, write to the Law Association of Zambia and the Republican President so that the Judiciary can be informed accordingly,” Mr. Ngulube said.

He reminded Mr. Sangwa that the United Party for National Development (UPND) would soon be going for the convention and that he would be of help if he contested the position of party chairperson for legal affairs.

“In fact, the State you are attacking in the media can be engaged through established channels. Even in churches we have a chain of communication. You can’t just stand up and start punching everyone in the streets. “ UPND is about to go for a convention.

They can give you a position such as chairman of Legal Affairs since you represented Mr. Hichilema in the 2016 election petition where you miscalculated the 14 days,” he said.

Another land scam explodes in Kitwe

By ROGERS KALERO A councillor in Kitwe has been implicated in the illegal allocation of land near Presidential Lodge, which has resulted into a land dispute between Central African Methodist Church and an individual only identified as Mugala At the centre of the controversy, is Bupe ward councillor, Collins Chansa, in Ndeke Township.

But Mr Chansa told the Daily Nation that he merely helped the church to acquire a place of worship in the area. He explained that after securing land for the Church a Mr Mugala surfaced and claimed that the land was his. In a separate interview with the Daily Nation in Kitwe, Central

African Methodist Church Elder, Kateule Mukupo, said the piece of land was given to them by Mr Chansa who promised to help them ensure that all the documents were properly done.

Elder Mukupo said the area councillor allocated the Church a piece of land after they verified with the Kitwe City Council that no one owned the same property.

He said after three years, a Mr Mugala surfaced and claimed ownership of the same piece of land which the councillor had given them.

“Yes, the plot was given to the church by councillor Chansa and he promised to ensure that all the documents were properly done. He said that was his job as a councillor, but after more than three years, a

Mr Mugala came to claim ownership of the land. “Mr Mugala claimed ownership of the land and started construction works. When we went to the council, they said they did not know him and even sent officers to stop his works, but we were surprised that he had documents from the Ministry of Lands,’’ Mr Mukupo said But Mr Chansa said if the Church leaders had informed him about Mr Mugala immediately he showed up, they would not have been entangled in the ownership wrangle.

Mr Chansa said after Mr Mugala surfaced, the church leadership decided to start dealing with Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe and they did not involve me at that point.

Remain focused, Church urges Lungu

The Central African Presbyterian Church urged President Lungu to soldier on with the responsibilities that God has given him of governing the country.

Synod of Zambia deputy secretary Reverend Doctor, Daniel Tembo acknowledged that it was difficult to be President and very few people appreciated the Presidency.

“Let him not listen to rubble rousers. As a church are praying for him, we realise it’s not easy to be President and it’s a job which very few people will appreciate,” said Rev. Doc. Tembo.

The clergyman was speaking yesterday during an induction service for Rev. Duckson Kumwenda in charge of Kabwe congregation which was officiated by Bwacha constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Sydney

Mushanga.

Rev. Dr. Tembo said as a church they would continue working with the government of the day in promoting the peace and unity of the nation.

He said as a church they were serious with issues of peace and desired peace, clean politics and campaigns ahead of the 2021 general elections.

“We believe as a church we are a beacon of peace and all politicians are my children, I embrace them, campaigns might be here today, we vote tomorrow it passes but you and me still need to live together,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Mr Mushanga who is Central province minister urged Zambians to take part in maintain peace and unity in the country. Mr Mushanga who said it’s only with peace and unity that meaningful development could be archived.

He said the promotion of peace and unity in the country should not be left to the church and political leaders but should be embraced by all.

3 PERISH, 5 INJURED IN ROAD MISHAP

By SIMON MUNTEMBA THREE people died on the spot, while five others sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident along Great North Road at Munali Hills, 48 kIlometres North of Mazabuka town.

Police public relations officer, Esther Katongo has identified one of the deceased as Violet Habumbe of Hakoola village, Chief Naluwama, Chikankata District while two others, female and male adults have not yet been identified.

Ms Katongo told the Daily Nation in a statement that the accident occurred yesterday at about 09:30 hours at Munali Hills along Great North Road (Mazabuka - Kafue).

She explained that involved was a motor vehicle Toyota Hiace Registration number BAE 3867 driven from South to North direction

by Levinson Mweemba, 34 years of Kabobola compound in Mazabuka, with 14 passengers on board.

Ms Katongo said the accident happened when the driver who while ascending a hill, improperly overtook a truck on a curve, and in trying to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming truck careered off and overturned several times.

“Due to the impact, three passengers sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. One has been identified as Violet Habumbe of Hakoola village, Chief Naluwama, Chikankata District while two, a female adult and a male adult have not yet been identified,” she said.

Ms Katongo said all the three bodies had been deposited in the Mazabuka general hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

She said five other passengers who sustained serious injuries were Rasheti Katanga, 30 years , Moono Jonathan 22 of Chityotyola, Kafue and Rhoda Malambo 18 of Chilanga township, Situmbeko Namangala 74 of Kanyama Compound in Lusaka and unknown male adult.

Business picks up MKUSHI TRADERS CRY FOR SHARE OF PRESIDENTIAL EMPOWERMENT FUND at Kabwe Mall BUSINESS at Kabwe mall is slowly picking up after management decided to reduce rentals to keep businesses running.

About four stores at the mall that wanted to close their businesses have resolved to continue running after the reduction in the rentals.

by Covid-19 global pandemic have negatively affected business at the mall.

Centre manager, Raydon Lupeke said in an interview that about two clients would soon open their businesses at the mall.

Mr Lupeke said a lease agreement was being done to finalise the procedure of having the clients on board.

“Currently, the four shops that wanted to leave say they are staying and we are doing agreements for two clients to come through and one is in the pipeline,” he said.

Mr Lupeke also said management was in talks with one of the bus operators and Hungry Lion to have the centre as a stopover for refreshments to boost business.

“We are in talks with one bus operator and they are agreeable to be stopping over for passengers to refresh, we are doing a lot to improve business at the mall,” he said.

RADERS in Mkushi have accused the Presidential Initiative Empowerment Fund (PIEP) coordinator Clement Tembo of being selective in disbursement of the funds and want to be considered also.

The accusation comes in the wake of lack of empowerment from the funding since inception while other districts in Central Province have already received a share such as nearby Kapiri-Mposhi.

The marketeers feel neglected and have expressed displeasure for allegedly being sidelined.

Ms Evelyn Mbewe, a representative of the traders said she believed President Edgar Lungu came up with the initiative to help citizens

with startup capital for various businesses to improve their livelihood especially women who were vulnerable.

Ms. Mbewe said Mkushi marketeers have been waiting for funding since Mr. Tembo visited them last year accompanied by their Member of Parliament Doreen Mwape and former District Commissioner Luka Mwamba.

She said as a group they have been making follow ups through the office of the ditict commissioner but nothing has come up.

“We just heard that our colleagues in Kapiri Mposhi were funded a few days ago. What of us here in Mkushi whom you promised to be funded. We also need empowerment funds to boost our businesses like other districts who have benefitted,” Ms. Mbewe said.

Margaret Batonga said as a group, they wanted to upgrade their businesses from selling vegetables to trade in rice or fish.

Ms. Batonga said in the era of Covid-19 business has become difficult and the sales were low. She said due to lack of business and customers, many traders have gone back to street vending.

Ms. Batonga appealed to Mr. Tembo to consider traders in Mkushi in the next allocation.

When contacted, Mr. Tembo said he will get back to them as he was in a meeting by the time of the conversation.

Recently through Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo, Kapiri Mposhi traders were funded about K50, 000 from PIEF, a situation which sparked off reactions from Mkushi traders.

Police in Mumbwa have arrested a 19 year old boy of Nangoma for allegedly raping a 99 year old woman.

Central Province, Police Commissioner Chola Katanga, confirmed to the Zambia News and Information Services(ZANIS) that the incident happened at Kasalu village yesterday, around 20:00 hours.

Mr Katanga, explained that the incident occurred when the victims’ daughter Naomi Sekele was selling at the shop leaving the old lady in the custody of her grandchildren, who also went to the shop to pick up the milk, thus leaving the old lady alone.

He said it was at that point that 19 year old, Bless Kapepe took advantage of the loose situation and pounced on the old lady, causing her to bleed heavily . “When the family went back home, they found the rapist busy in the act with a motionless old lady heavily bleeding and Kapepe was apprehended when he attempted to run away,” Mr Katanga explained.

The victim was later taken to Nangoma mission hospital, while the suspected rapist is in police custody.

THE failure by the opposition UPND to condemn the beating up of Chief Nyakaseya by one of its members in Ikelenge District in North-western province is a clear indication that it is a violent party with no respect for traditional leaders, a Patriotic Front (PF) sympathizer has said.

Mr Peter Sikazwe said the UPND’s failure to apologize and condemn the bad language and violent conduct of its cadres was a clear sign of arrogance and lack of regard for other people in society.

“Apologizing to a person you have offended is a sign of humility, but it is sad that our colleagues in UPND don’t want to apologize. The failure by UPND to apologize to anyone is a sign of arrogance and pomposity.

“If they can beat up the chief and refuse to apologize, it means they have no regard for any one. We have delayed to issue a statement thinking they will apologize, but nothing, hence our decision to issue a statement,’’ Mr Sikazwe said.

On Thursday last week, police in Ikelenge District arrested 54-year-old Lawrence Kazhimbala of UPND for

assaulting Chief Nyakaseya of the Lunda people.

He is said to have beaten up the traditional leader when he tried to order closure of his bar due to rising cases of COVID 19.

But Mr Sikazwe said people were expecting the UPND to exhibit humility, tolerance and maturity so that they could sympathize with them.

“You are in the opposition and you are insulting people like no one business, it becomes a problem. Even those who wanted to give you a benefit of doubt will think twice.

“Yes, they will think twice, what if we give them power, how are they going to behave?

Are they going to give us respect? So UPND must learn to be humble,’’ he said According to a police report, the chief was over-powered by Mr Kazhimbala, who punched and kicked the traditional leader.

Chief Nyakeseya suffered a swollen right hand and is currently admitted to Kaleni Hospital.

North Western Province Police Commissioner Elias Chishi said the incident was embarrassing and called for respect for traditional leaders and adherence to COVID 19 rules.

THE Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ) needs to play an active role in upscaling financial inclusion in rural areas by providing finances to micro-financial institution for onward lending.

This is according to the Policy Monitoring and Research Centre (PMRC) Executive Director, Bernadette Deka-Zulu.

Ms Zulu observed in a statement the need for increasing financial inclusion, particularly in rural areas. She recommended that Government through DBZ should provide finances to microfinancial institution for onward lending to rural areas as a way of increasing financial inclusion.

“The Development Bank of Zambia needs to play an active role as a head financial institution providing finances to micro-financial institution for onward lending to rural areas.

“Government is urged to put in place measures to guarantee smallholder farmers’ active participation in the agriculture commodity exchange,” Ms Zulu said.

The last Finscope Report for Zambia which was done in 2015 indicated that financial inclusion was significantly skewed towards urban areas at 70.3 percent of adults, compared to rural areas that experienced lower levels of at 50.2 percent.

She also urged Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) and other stakeholders to increase sensitisation in rural communities on the options available to smallholder farmers regarding use of movables assets as collateral to access finance.

Ms Zulu further urged the Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) to upscale efforts in ensuring that the necessary micro insurance guidelines were promptly put in place.

Statistics above indicate that Kenya has done well, compared to other countries, because of the recent success of mobile money in Kenya and East Africa in general. Innovations can bring about drastic changes in how people engage in financial transactions by;

OHANNESBURG - Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago has said that inflation is expected to remain contained over the next two years, despite concerns from some economists that South Africa is heading toward a deflation "danger zone."

The governor was speaking during a briefing following the repo rate announcement. The Monetary Policy Committee decided to cut rates by 25 basis points, in line with market expectations.

This brings the repo to

3.5 percent, the lowest rate since the repo system was introduced in 1998. The central bank has slashed interest rates by 300 bps so far this year.

Some economists however feel the MPC could have introduced deeper cuts, given the unprecedented economic crisis brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taking into account the collapse in growth and weak inflation, there is "scope" for deeper cuts, said Old Mutual Chief Economist Johann Els.

He previously told Fin24 that the bank should be responding to the risk of deflation.

"Under these circumstances one needs to frontload [rate cuts] as much as possible," he said during a phone call just after the rates announcement.

Kganyago however noted that South Africa is experiencing disinflation – which means inflation is growing at a slower place than the previous period and not deflation, when prices decline. Currently the SA bond market has

CiSCA CLAIMS ON BILL 10 MISLEADING Dear editor

E wish to strongly dismiss and respond to the partisan statement that has been issued by Civil Society for Constitutional Agenda (CISCA) in the wake of Justice Minister Honorable Given Lubinda's affirmation to re-introduce back the Constitution of Zambian Amendment Bill no. 10 of 2019.

W e appreciate the fact that like any other citizen, CiSCA is utilizing its liberty to express its stance and this is evident that President Lungu's government values divergent views. On behalf of youths whose interests we represent, we would like to react to the statement lest it is taken as gospel truth by the unsuspecting citizens.

We also wish to correct the claims by CiSCA that government will re-introduce the bill to Parliament. This claim is as false as it is incorrect and a blatant misrepresentation of Parliamentary

We do agree with Honourable Lubinda's observation that the opponents of bill 10 are striving hard to remain relevant, we add that this is their newly found ways of retaining prominence in some hostile media platforms.

We wish to assure CiSCA that Bill 10 is in without any taint of doubt absolutely in the best interest of the Zambian people as it is the golden opportunity to iron out the creases which have been the basis of protracted discontentment in other Christian and Democratic Republic of Zambia.

On behalf of the youths, we wish to reaffirm that President Lungu's government is a youth oriented government led by youthful and useful personalities.

It is against this background that President Lungu's commitment to give constitutional assurance of the participation of youths in the political affairs should be supported and persuade the UPND MPs to withdraw their

Just internet can do. It’s not a must that you need to pay at the gym. You can jog outside. It’s not a must that you should have the devices that everyone is talking

AN insult against any traditional leader in Zambia, Bemba, Tonga or any other is also an insult against his or her subjects and as such, whoever is guilty of such an act must be ready to suffer the consequences that come with such disrespect.

As a starting point, the UPND must take disciplinary action against Mucheleka who is a senior member of their Party to initiate a motion of reconciliation with Mwinelubemba. They should avoid coming out as more intelligent and educated than others with jargon quoted press statements, failure to which would mean the entire UPND leadership agrees with the insults attributed to Mucheleka.

It is also scary to note that the official statement from UPND also states that:- “We have in the past demonstrated our commitment and love to SOME of our traditional leaders in the country”. SOME, NOT ALL, how so?

If anything, HH has committed political suicide by taking on the Chitimukulu and it is very likely that Mucheleka couldn’t have issued that statement without the blessing of HH and leadership.

HH and Mucheleka must understand that hate is a contagious disease. Hate is irrational and explosive negative energy. Failure to contain it has led to needless loss of lives. Many war-torn countries started as peaceful nations. It took leadership failure to destroy those nations.

HH must further understand that tribal Wars or politics have never solved any problem. At the end of the day, we must all undergo “Intercultural competence training.”

Peace is difficult to restore once lost because the blood of the slain is always crying for revenge, hence the soil is spiritually defiled by bloodshed.

HH must not risk losing the Bemba vote by letting his senior members insult any Bemba chief. The current Chief Chitimukulu, Henry Kanyanta Sosola is one of the few Zambian chiefs who has displayed immense wisdom when it comes to governing his people and as well as giving sound advice to his subjects and the country as a whole. We also need to appreciate and understand that he is also one of a few chiefs, like Chief Mukuni who are very

intelligent and speak freely on topics of national importance.

Incase HH has forgotten, Unity and competition are the cornerstones of the Bemba’s successful political system.

Their unity lies in that the seventeen gazetted chiefs and fifteen non-gazetted sub-chiefs who are linked to one another, not primarily through subordination, but through a complex and flexible kinship between chiefs and sub-chiefs themselves and then with a total allegiance to a common Mwinelubemba Chitimukulu.

The Chitimukulu is the oldest name of a royal chief in the Bemba dynasty. It is the name carried by the most senior members of the crocodile totem and as such it demands the most respect.

The sway of the Chitimukulu is as much moral and spiritual as temporal. His temporal power too is the greatest of the chiefs. He lives in and rules Ulubemba, the stronghold of the tribe and all appointments of chiefs to help him hold the widening sphere of Bemba rule comes from him.

Is this what HH wants to risk through careless remarks by his cronies?

All those who want to destroy the Bemba chieftaincy and tribe aim to break up the unity and allegiance to Mwinelubemba Chitimukulu and create a weak Bemba multi-chiefdoms tribe that could easily be scrapped.

The greatest problem in Zambia is that the ‘’educated’’ believe that they have acquired knowledge in all spheres of life. And to them “education’’ is the master key that can open all doors of life.

However, the truth is that you cannot think a traditional muddle clear: you have only to obey it clear. As Alexander Goldenweiser put it in his book, Anthropology: An Introduction to Primitive Culture: ‘’What the anthropologist really deals with, then, is not the past but the present… people in general, and primitive in particular, do not think or analyse their culture they live it. It never occurs to them to synthesize what they live or reduce it to a common denominator, as it were.’’ (ibid., p.43).

In intellectual matters you can think things out, but in customary matters you think yourself into cotton wool. The point is that in cultural norms, intellect or reason is not sufficient to explain strong elements of ritual nature. This is because ritual deals with objective realities and definite contents and demands. And in this respect, the mystical nature of chieftainship is an extraordinarily eclectic dissertation particularly valuable in that it allows western culture to view itself from the outside, thereby permitting the objectivity impossible for the ignoramuses puffed up with western accumulated book knowledge whose opinions and axioms are perverted.

ANTI- KAMPYONGO SCHEME SLAMMED

A TRADITIONAL ruler of Shiwang’andu district has condemned UPND Secretary General Stephen Katuka for conniving with a former Matumbo ward councilor to de-campaign area MP Stephen Kampyongo using lies.

In a telephone interview from Shiwang’andu last Friday,

Sub-Chief Mushila said he was aware that Mr. Katuka had allegedly connived with the named former Councilor to mount a campaign of falsehoods against Mr. Kamyongo, who has developed the area contrary to the duo’s lies that Mr. Kamyongo has lost popularity in the area because of his alleged failure to develop his constituency.

schools and recently opened a health post at Malekani and taken two ambulances to the area.

He said Mr. Kamyongo, who is also Home Affairs minister, recently worked on the road linking the chiefdom to other parts of Shiwang’andu to ensure smooth transportation of patients and building materials for various projects currently under way in Shiwang’andu.

Granted, young children are not expected to make financial contributions, they are however expected to contribute something around your home.

This contribution takes the form of chores assigned to them. When your children start work whilst staying with you, they need to contribute financially to the household expenses, and you must ensure that this happens.

Plan Together Set goals together and plan - for instance, at the beginning of the year. Discuss what your priorities are for the year and remember to make these detailed. Each member of the family can itemise their needs for school such as school bags, books and shoes. They can also indicate items such as special clothes for parties or church and treats ranging from movies to eating out. At this stage, you must ensure that they understand that some

Miner buried alive …as earth curves in

AN ILLEGAL miner has died in Mkushi at former Sacko Mine Limited after the earth collapsed and buried him alive.

Central province police commissioner Chola Katanga confirmed the accident to the Daily Nation in an interview.

Mr. Katanga said the incident occurred on Friday between 16:00 and 17:00 hours whilst the victim was working.

Mr. Katanga identified the victim as Enock Mupeta 22, of an unknown address in Itala compound. Mr. Katanga further said after police in conjunction with the fire brigade rushed to the scene where the body was retrieved and pronounced dead upon reaching Mkushi district hospital.

Mr. Katanga added that the body was deposited at Mkushi district hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

“Brief facts of the matter are that the victim was working at the Sacko mine. Between 16:00 and 17:00 hours the earth collapsed and buried him alive,” said Mr. Katanga. Sacko Mine Limited was formerly owned by Sacko Bassi who has been deported to his native land Mali after allegedly abrogating Zambian laws.

Meanwhile, two grandchildren aged 10 and 12 have discovered the body of their grandfather murdered by unknown people in Mkushi. The incident occurred on Friday between 08:00hours and 12:00hours at Katwishi area. Central province police commissioner Chola Katanga confirmed the suspected murder in an interview.

Mr. Katanga identified the victim as Isaac Chibwe 73,of Katwishi area who was found dead at home. Mr. Katanga further said police visited the scene and discovered that the victim had cuts on the head. “The victim sustained cuts on the head as a blunt object is suspected to have been used in inflicting the injuries.

“Brief facts of the matter are that the victim was at home and was discovered dead by his grandchildren aged 10 and 12 years old between 08:00 and 12:00 hours.” Mr. Katanga said.

State defends political parties

By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA THE State has told the Constitutional Court that there has been no violation of the constitutional requirements by political parties in terms of them holding free and fair elections regularly, that would give need for the Registrar of Societies to deregister them.

This is in a matter where Livingstone Magistrate Benjamin Mwelwa has petitioned the Constitutional Court asking it to deregister political parties that have not held party elections since 2016, as required by the amended constitution.

He is seeking an order and declaration that any political party which was registered and in existence as of January 5, 2016 and which has not promoted and practiced democracy through regular, free and fair elections, within its political party, has breached article 60(2)(d) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act no. 2 of 2016.

Mr Mwelwa therefore, seeks a declaration that such political parties ceased to exist as political parties in Zambia on January 4, 2017. He cited Attorney General, Likando Kalaluka and the Electoral

Commission of Zambia (ECZ) as the respondents in the matter. The UPND, PF and the MMD have joined the matter as interested parties.

In its answer to Mr Mwelwa’s petition, the State through Thandiwe Phiri-Mhende, a principal State advocate from the Attorney General’s chambers, argued that neither the constitution or any law enacted, proscribes that elections for political parties need to be held within 12 months.

“The constitution merely directs that tenets of democracy should be upheld by all political parties but how or when that is done is not prescribed,” Ms Phiri-Mhende said.

She stated that there had been no violation of the constitutional requirements by political parties in so far as holding party elections to warrant them being reregistered by the Registrar of Societies.

Meanwhile, the PF through their Secretary General Davis Mwila, argued that that its party constitution gives the party president power to appoint the Secretary General.

Mr Mwila denied that the same is unconstitutional.

He urged the court to dismiss Mr Mwelwa’s claims in so far as the PF is concerned. He wants the court to make a declaration that the PF has complied with the provisions of Article 60 (2) (d) of the Constitution of Zambia Act No 1 of 2016.

THE unprecedented infrastructure developments across the country is a sure trump card for the Patriotic Front t (PF) to retain power in 2021, former UPND Livingstone District Vice Chairperson, Lutangu Fwanyanga,has said.

Mr Fwanyanga has also predicted that the UPND would crumble after next year’s elections.

He was speaking during the ongoing PF’s mobilisation programmes in all the 17 wards at the weekend. Mr Fwanyanga said that the country had been undergoing transformation through developmental projects and added that the onus was on Zambians to allow the ruling party and President Edgar Lungu to continue.

According to him, UPND has nothing to offer starting from its leader Hakainde Hichilema and those in lower structures.

He said that the scrambling of UPND was looming especially after next because Mr Hichilema was a difficult person to work with. Mr Fwanyanga said the leadership of UPND under Mr Hichilema, the opposition party has had four Vice-Presidents, who had left the party because of poor leadership.

He said that the departure of all the four senior members must act as an eye opener to the people of Zambia to judge the leadership in UPND. Mr Fwanyanga said clearly, it could not be that all those that had left the UPND were a problem, but it was the intolerance and difficult work environment which h forced them out. “When you get married and divorce more than three times, then you are a wrong character. That is the more reason why UPND update has no vice president,” he said.

Mr Fwanyanga said currently the opposition party’s national Chairperson, Mutale Nalumango was the pillar of UPND and not Mr Hakainde.

He insisted that after next year’s general elections, the UPND would vanish from the scene.

Meanwhile, Livingstone Central Parliamentary aspiring candidate, Ikuka Muleta, has asked the people of Zambezi ward to support the ruling party and his candidature.

ESIDENTS of Nakatindi Township in Livingstone have appealed to Government to intervene in the looming demolishing of their homes by Zambia Railway Limited (ZRL).

ZRL is planning to demolish more than 400 houses built on its reserve land along the Mulobezi railway track which had been encroachment.

The houses were built too close to the railway track contrary to the required 50 metres away from the line for any structure. But the residents are now worried of their homes and property if the demolition goes ahead.

ZRL DEMOTION EXERCISE LOOMS In an interview with the Daily Nation in Livingstone, one of the affected residents, Makwingo Namukolo, pleaded with the Government to intervene.

Mr Namukolo said that the Livingstone City Councils allocated them to the plots and authorised construction but wondered why their homes should be demolished.

“We have a concern over the plots where we have built houses. We are being told by Zambia Railways that we have encroached and our houses will be demolished, but why,” Mr Namukolo wondered.

“Everyone who built there was given those plots by the Council and we paid for those plots. Those plots are not illegal, people bought and they have papers to prove it so why demolish the houses,” Mr Namukolo said.

He said most of the people who had built on the land were old and they havd no hope of where they would go.

Mr Namukolo said since ZRL informed them about the decision, no Government official had shown up to intervene, prompting them to make the earnest appeal.

He said people have been on the plots for a very long time. Recently, ZRL Managing Director, Christopher Musonda, complained that there were many encroachments on the company’s land, making it difficult it implement rehabilitation and expansion projects.

ZRL has thus resolved to reclaim land from illegal developers, who had built houses and other properties near the railway track while in some cases, railways infrastructure had been uprooted.

Lstone Council embraces e-billing

With the new way of delivering bills electronically, the local authority has launched a sensitization programme on the new way of billing clients and subsequently making of payment from the comfort of their homes.

Mr Mapuwo urged the residents to create awareness among themselveson the importance of paying property rates and other statutory fees in communities.

desk at the Victoria Falls border to collect border levies, as this would be done at the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) pay point.

Meanwhile, GIZ Decentralization for Development, Public Finance Advisor, Francis Muyambo, expressed gratitude for partnering with the Livingstone City Council.

Mr Muyambo said that so far, it was only Livingstone City Council where the project was being implemented.

SOUTH AFRICA JAILBREAK: ...prison inmates rearrested

LL 68 inmates who escaped from a jail in South Africa's Western Cape on Friday have been rearrested, the government says.

Prison officials were praised for "restoring stability" following a two-day manhunt. The break-out

happened after inmates at Malmesbury Prison "overpowered" staff during an exercise session.

They then locked three officers in a cell before freeing other prisoners and escaping over a roof, authorities said. Previous reports said they had escaped while be-

ing transferred to court for trial.

South Africa's prison body had originally said 69 inmates escaped, but the department of justice on Sunday said they were 68 in total.

According to local news site EWN, the reason for

this confusion was that one inmate presumed to have escaped had in fact "moved to a different cell during the chaos and never left the facility".

North Korea on alert over ‘first suspected coronavirus case’ NORTH Korea has reported what it describes as the country's first suspected case of coronavirus.

State news agency KCNA said a person who defected to South Korea three years ago last week returned across the demarcation line had Covid-19 symptoms.

Leader Kim Jong-un held an emergency meeting with top officials, imposing a lockdown in the border city of Kaesong.

North Korea, a secretive state, had earlier said it had no Covid-19 cases - but analysts say this was unlikely.

"An emergency event happened in Kaesong city where a runaway who went to the south three years ago, a person who is suspected to have been infected with the vicious virus returned on 19 July after illegally crossing the demarcation line," KCNA said.

At Saturday’s politburo meeting, Mr Kim ordered a “maximum emergency system” to contain the virus.

KCNA added that Mr Kim also launched an investigation into how the person had managed to cross the heavily fortified border, warning those responsible that “a se-

vere punishment” would be administered.

At the same time, South Korea has not reported of any illegal crossings of the demilitarized border in recent days.

North Korea closed its borders and put thousands of people in isolation six months ago, as the virus swept across the globe.

Rwandan volunteer re-arrested over cathedral fire A RWANDAN national has been re-arrested in the French city of Nantes and charged with arson, following a fire that damaged the city's 15th Century Gothic cathedral a week ago.

The 39-year-old man, who worked as a volunteer warden at the cathedral, was detained but released last week.

French newspaper Le

Monde quotes a prosecutor as saying the suspect has "admitted" to being responsible for the fire that broke out in three different places.

His lawyer is quoted as saying the man "bitterly regrets" his actions.

Delegated or subsidiary legislation are laws delegated to the Executive wing of the government to make as provided for in an act of parliament.

•

The law recognized that it would not be possible for parliament to make all laws.

•

Parliament has allowed government ministers to make laws. For example, the Education Act allows the Minister of Education, through consultations to issue government circulars that become law.

•

The Law is a set of rules, which a society develops for itself to control the behaviour of its members to one another.

•

It also includes the meting out of punishment to members of society that do not abide by the rules and the awarding of compensation to people who have been wronged.

•

This is the second largest source of law in Zambia.

•

It is also known as Law Reports or Judicial Precedent.

•

Without law, society as we know it would be impossible because freedom without boundaries results in anarchy, which means total confusion. From the time that human beings are born, their lives, safety, health and peace are controlled by law.

•

This is when, in disposing of a case, the court refers to how a similar case was decided upon by a superior court.

•

In Zambia, superior courts are the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court, the High Court and the Industrial Relations Court.

Elements of a good legal system

•

A good legal system is one that serves members of its society fairly without violating their rights. There are six core elements that should be present in a good legal system. A good legal system has to be:

The High Court and the Industrial Relations Court are at the same level, the difference is in the type of matters they handle.

•

The High Court handles criminal and civil cases while the Industrial Relations Court handles employment or labour disputes. The four courts handle appeal cases and are therefore known as appellant courts.

•

The Magistrate Courts and the Local Courts are lower courts.

•

The decisions of the appellant courts are reported in the Zambia Law Reports.

•

Decisions of the appellant courts are binding on subordinate courts.

•

For example, if a case handled by the Supreme Court is recorded in the Law Reports, this decision is binding on the High Court and the Industrial Relations Court. The imaginary case below illustrates this point:

iii. Case Law

Simple (Uncomplicated) A law has to be written in a language that can be easily understood by a large section of society. The form of language and the level of difficulty should suit the needs of the majority of citizens.

•

Comprehensive (Inclusive) It should not leave gaps but attempt to cover all possible areas of dispute, concern or debate. It should anticipate future problems and include them in the laws. It should not be constantly formulating new laws as wrongful acts take place.

•

Certain (Definite) Citizens ought to know clearly what is prohibited by law. A law should not be so ambiguous or vague that it is only fully understood and interpreted by a small number of people in society. It should therefore be documented so that it is possible to refer to it and that it should be clear to everyone who consults it.

•

Accessible (Obtainable)

•

It should be readily available to members of the public. This means that it should also be affordable. If citizens come into conflict with the law, they should be able to afford legal representation. Similarly, a wronged person should be able to readily access legal means of having their problem dealt with. If the legal system is not affordable, then it excludes a large number of people.

Flexible (Adaptable)

Case Laws are important because they: i.

Save time as there is no need for a whole new research.

ii.

Show respect to the judges who made the previous decisions.

iii.

Ensure equality, uniformity and stability in the law. If a murder case takes place and a decision is made, when another murder case takes place in similar circumstances the same decision as the first murder case should apply regardless of who committed the offence.

Laws have to keep up with social change and therefore, they should change with time. If a type of dispute which was not there previously comes up, the law should change to take care of any new challenge. If it does not, then it is rejecting change. A good law should not reject change.

International Treaties

Zambia is signatory to a number of International Treaties.

The contents of these treaties are the sources of Law.

•

Note that in order for these International treaties to become Law they have to be domesticated through an Act of Parliament in order to officially become Zambian Statutes.

Moral Values (Ethical)

Note: we have two types of legal systems in the world namely; Monist and Dualist. Dualist legal system which recognises International Law as law but does not apply directly on the country not until it is domesticated through an Act of Parliament while Monist Legal system considers International and domestic law as one.

The law should be based on the moral values of society. If laws do not reflect society’s core values, citizens are unlikely to respect and uphold it.

Sources of Law in Zambia Sources of law are the starting point to refer to in order to find what the law says when one is faced with a legal problem. Zambia has a dual legal system and relies on the English Law and African Customary Law.

Common Law is one of the Laws that Zambia has adopted. Common Law is the Law that started from customs that were common to all parts of England.

England applied this Common Law to its colonies such as Zambia and after independence this became part of the sources of law of the Zambian legal system.

ii. Legislation Legislation or statutes is the largest source of law in Zambia. These are laws enacted by parliament.

All powers to make laws are vested in parliament. There are three types of laws made by legislation. a) The Constitution •

The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land. Article 1 Paragraph 3 of the 1996 Amended Zambian Constitution states out its supremacy.

•

It states, This Constitution is the Supreme Law of Zambia and if any other law is inconsistency of this law, that other law will be declared void.

•

This implies that if any law does not conform to the Constitution, then that law becomes invalid Acts of Parliament are laws made through bills passed by the National Assembly and assented by the President.

•

The process begins with the presentation of a bill in the National Assembly and passes through three Reading Stages before being sent to the President to either veto or withhold his or assent.

•

If he/she assents, the bill is gazetted and becomes law.

•

If the President does not sign, the bill is sent back to the National Assembly.

•

The National Assembly can either debate further or make changes or it can send back to the President in its original form.

When this happens, the President has 21 days in which to either assent or dissolve Parliament to pave way for fresh elections.

•

c) Delegated or Subsidiary Legislation

These practices differ from the ones in Statutory Instruments because they are not written and not codified.

Before Zambia was colonised, the indigenous people were using their customs, most of which have been in use from prehistoric times, as their law.

For a custom to be recognised and enforced by the courts as law, it must be in existence for a long time, sometimes over centuries and it must be freely accepted by most citizens for it to be binding on them.

•

Most Zambians are governed by customary law in their personal affairs.

•

The local courts which administer customary law are located all over the country and they are the ones commonly used by the less privileged and the vulnerable in society.

•

They are easily accessible and conducted mainly in local languages, although English is also allowed. As a result, local courts hear 80% of the total cases brought before all the courts in the court system annually. Customary law is also applied in traditional courts, which are presided over by traditional rulers.

•

Customary law uses advisors who are called assessors to give advice on particular matters.

•

These assessors are not extra Justices but play the role of a consultant. For example, if a court is about to hear a case involving a Lamba customary law, it could invite a Lamba person of suitable character and social status to sit as an assessor for that particular case only.

•

The advice of assessors is given in open court so that everyone can hear it and that the persons concerned shall be able to respond or bring evidence on matters after such advice is given.

b) Acts of Parliament •

Customary Law is derived from custom, which is the practice of doing things in society.

RIME in Mitengo residential area in Ndola has continued to rise unabated as the bandits have now stolen Zesco installation worth K7800.

The usually serene residential area, sitting between Chifubu Township and the Mufulira-Ndola road, has recorded a series of thefts in the past six months, which occur every week.

Last week, bandits broke into a house and hauled household goods which included a refrigerator, a cooker, furniture and solar power unit, all of which was loaded onto a waiting van in the dead of the night.

GOVERNMENT has donated over a hundred bags of mealie meal to the elderly people of Twapia Township of Ndola District.

Ndola Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel Mulenga donated over a 100 bags of Mealie meal to the aged people of Garment of Praise International Ministries in Twapia.

Mr Mulenga who is also Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development said he was making the donation on behalf of President Edgar Lungu.

He said the donation aimed at aiding the elderly people to take care of their households and them-

WIZARD REMAKS LEAD TO SUICIDE

AN ELDERLY man of Luanshya District has hanged himself to a tree after being accused of being a wizard by his family members.

Confirming the incident, Luanshya District Commissioner Patrick Maipambe said Mr Fitaliano Chikumbi, 86 years old of Kambilombilo Township of Luanshya committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree.

Mr Maipambe stated that the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, July 25 this year at Luanshya graveyard.

The Luanshya District Commissioner

made the confirmation through a statement to the Daily Nation.

He said the matter was reported by the son, Steven Musonda 37 years of the same address at the Luanshya Central Police Station.

He said the man hanged himself to a tree at the graveyard using a rope after being accused of being a wizard by his family members.

Mr Maipambe stated that the suicide scene had been visited by the police stating that the body had been observed to have no visible injuries.

He said the body had been deposited in the Thomson hospital awaiting burial.

Inequality fight gains momentum

IN the quest to fight inequality, the first of the 2020 national gathering for the Fight Inequality Alliance Zambia (FIAZ) has commenced its gathering.

FIAZ is a global movement of people who are fighting inequality to beat poverty and injustice using online and offline technologies in order to increase voices FIA National Coordinator, Daisy Lutangu, told the Daily Nation in Kitwe that the national gathering which was supposed to take place last March was postponed to protect the participants and the general citizenry from Covid -19. Ms Lutangu said the programme was going ahead in order to ensure that obstacles in fighting inequality were removed to ensure advocacy and other programmes succeeded.

Mr Ngosa expressed gratitude that the fight against inequality was not only innovative but also creative in everything it did.

He observed that there was no amount of pressure including Covid -19 that could stop the Fight for Inequality Alliance in its quest to bring equality.

"It is in situations surrounding the global pandemic like Covid -19 that perpetuated inequality and the involvement of the community could help to speak out very clear visions," he said.

CUBA REBELLION DAY: 26 July ...the Castro brothers joined with other exiles in Mexico to prepare for the overthrow of Batista, receiving training from Alberto Bayo, a leader of Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War.

I

T is a public holiday in Cuba and one of the most important dates as the 1st January when the Revolution guided by Fidel Castro took power in Cuba. 26th July reminds every one of the 1953 brave assault on the Moncada and Céspedes garrisons in Oriente, Cuba, which although unsuccessful at that time, initiated the CUBA rebellion that drove out Batista´s dictatorship from power 5 years later.

Fulgencio Batista, a former soldier and sergeant, became president on 10th March 1952, after seizing power in a military coup and canceling what could be the 1952 elections. During his time Batista proved to be dictatorial and indifferent to popular concerns, and closely allied to the United States. While Cuba remained plagued by corruption, high unemployment and limited infrastructure, Batista antagonized the population by forming lucrative links to organized crime and allowing American companies to dominate Cuban economy, especially sugar-cane plantations, sugar mills, railways, factories, mines and other local resources, which served only the local bourgeoisie, the American investors and the majority of the population in abject ignorance and poverty.

Cuba Rebellion Traditions and Activities The Cuban Revolution was the right response to that state of affairs, an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro's revolutionary 26th of July Movement against the authoritarian and pro yankee Batista´s government.

Numerous key Movement revolutionaries, including Castro brothers, were captured shortly after the assault. In a highly political trial, Fidel spoke for nearly four hours in his defense, ending with the words "Condemn me, it does not matter.

History will absolve me."

Castro's defense was based on nationalism, the representation and beneficial programs for the non-elite Cubans, and his patriotism and justice for the Cuban community. Fidel was sentenced to 15 years in the Presidio Modelo prison, located on Isla de Pinos, while Raúl was sentenced to 13 years.

However, in 1955, under broad political pressure, the Batista government declared an amnesty and freed all political prisoners in Cuba, including the Moncada attackers.

Soon, the Castro brothers joined with other exiles in Mexico to prepare for the overthrow of Batista, receiving training from Alberto Bayo, a leader of Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War. In June 1955, Fidel met in México the Argentine revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara, who joined his cause.

The revolutionaries named themselves the "26th of July Movement", in reference to the date of their attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953.

Guerrilla warfare The Granma yacht departed from Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico, on 25 November 1956, carrying the Castro brothers and 80 others including Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, even though the yacht was only designed to accommodate 12 people with a maximum of 25. The yacht arrived in Cuba on 2nd December in Playa Las Coloradas, in the municipality of Niquero, arriving two days later than

wide range of progressive social reforms, to provide equality for black Cubans and greater rights for women, to improve communications, medical and health facilities, housing, and education. By the end of the 1960s, all Cuban children were receiving free education, unemployment and corruption were reduced, and great improvements were made in hygiene and sanitation. Fidel dedicated many of his years to develop equality among Afro-Cubans. His anti-discrimination legislation was his first and major attempt to give equality to the people of Cuba. His many reforms (healthcare, education, and equality) gave opportunities to those Afro-Cubans who lived in poverty because of the racial discrimination in Cuba.

The equal right of all citizens to health, education, work, food, security, housing, culture, science, and

wellbeing – that is, the same rights we proclaimed when we began our struggle, in addition to those which emerge from our dreams of justice and equality for all inhabitants of the world.

One of the many expressions of our solidarity can be seen in the thousands of foreign scholarship students graduated in Cuba since 1961, thousand of them from African countries.

The Cuban Revolution had powerful domestic and international repercussions and started a deep process of economic and social transformations in the Cuban society with the option of socialism as the only way to build a better, fair and more equitably society. In particular, it transformed Cuba's relationship with the United States, although efforts to improve diplomatic relations have gained momentum in recent years, the American government persist in its cruel economic, financial and trade blockade policy and sanctions against Cuba, reinforced under the Trump administration.

The Cuban Revolution also heralded an era of internationalist support to other countries during the struggle fighting for their independence and freedom, including African countries like Angola, Guinea Bissau, Congo, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa, etc. Today that solidarity is symbolized by sending of Cuban Medical Brigades to friendly countries to fight diseases and pandemic as the Covid-19. This is the legacy of 26th July uprising and our modest tribute to that historical date which made it possible for the Cuban Revolution.

We are proud and happy of our history of Spanish and African routes and values which make our culture stronger and rich, and as such we never forget the great importance and far reaching significance of 26th July.

Today, the Cuban government under the leadership of President Miguel DíazCanel is a continuation of the one headed by Fidel and Raúl Castro, widely supported and represented by the Cuban people, struggling to build a better and harmonious society for everyone. 26th July is celebrated in Cuba as the Day of the Revolution and every year it is more alive than ever.

SENSATIONAL Zanaco’s objective to take advantage of their games in hand yet again suffered a setback following their barren draw against Nkwazi in a week 20 rescheduled fixture played at Sunset Stadium yesterday.

And National Division fixtures involving Kafue Celtic Vs Prison Leopards and Police College Vs Nchanga Rangers which yesterday could not take off due to non -availability of COVID-19 results. In the rescheduled week 20 fixture, Zanaco were looking to redeem themselves following a humiliating three nil loss suffered at the hands of Nkana last week in Kitwe.

The fixture provided Coach Chris Kaunda an opportunity for redemption after his team was early this season beaten by Nkwazi in the reverse fixture played under former coach Numba Mumamba. Now under Chris Kaunda a Zanaco side which had been rejuvenated before the suspension of the games was looking for a win so as to brighten their chances of breaking into the top four. Kaunda came up against his former assistant Dennis Makinka whom he mentored at Nkwazi during his previous two stints as Nkwazi coach.

The game could not live up to its high intensity billing for a derby as both sides put up a luckstrure performance that saw it ending nil all at the end of the 90 minutes. Fulfilling games in hand doesn’t get too easier for the bankers as they now have to face title contenders Green Eagles on Wednesday. Sunday’s result has left Zanaco number 10 on the premier log with 35 points. Meanwhile National Division One league week 25 fixture involving Kafue Celtic and Prison Leopards could yet again not take place on Sunday following non availability of Celtic‘s COVID-19 result.

Celtic was on Saturday scheduled to host Leopards in top five clash that was to be played at the OYDC but was later pushed to Sunday as the hosts were yet to receive their COVID results after conducting tests on Wednesday last week. And the game involving Nchanga Rangers and Police College could also not kick off as COVID-19 results were not yet ready after their test on Tuesday last week.
