F RO M THE MANAGER

DARYL McMAHON

Good afternoon everyone from the Chigwell Construction Stadium, I hope you are all keeping safe and well and I hope you have enjoyed a relaxing Easter weekend. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to Danny Searle and his coaching staff ahead of this afternoon’s match. On the Hartlepool defeat…

I thought the performance was really good. It’s a difficult place to go – they have a fantastic home record at the moment. I thought for large spells of the game we were the better side but unfortunately, we were undone by a set piece.

It’s been a theme in the games that we’ve lost where we feel we should’ve done better and the majority of those for us have been not taking our chances. We’re creating good chances and we just have to keep believing in what we’re doing. On Matt Robinson...

He’s been in great form of late. He’s scored four goals in 150 appearances, and three of those have come in his last 10 – he’s been on an incredible run for us. I said it last week – he gives us so much energy, on and off the pitch with the positivity that he brings in the changing room. We’ve changed his position; he can play with both feet and he’s really good in the air and now he’s getting into those positions where he can affect the game. By putting him into the box from crossing positions, we’ve realised he can be a handful and the energy that he has means he’s so hard to mark.

On Aldershot Town…

I’ll expect them to be similar to the last time we faced them earlier in the season, but they’ll see a very different Dagenham & Redbridge side. We’re nothing like we were when we played Aldershot. If you look back on our season, it’s taken us a while to get to the stage we’re at now for various reasons, and now we’re looking like the team we wanted to be earlier in the season.

On finishing the season strong…

I thought we put in a performance on Friday that was worthy of taking some points. In the last eight games, we’ve won four, drawn two and lost two, and those two that we lost were down to set pieces. It’s fine margins in this league and we look to attack Aldershot today with everything we’ve got to go and win, then we go onto the next one. That’s the relentless mindset that I want us to have between now and the end of the season, that every game we’ve got something to prove individually and collectively.

Thank you for continuing to show your support for us and I hope you enjoy this afternoon’s game!

THE OPPOSITION

ALDERSHOT TOWN THESHOTSI MEET THE TEAM GEORGE FOWLER

Danny Searle Manager Danny Searle joined the Shots in May 2019 after spending the second half of the 2018/19 season in charge of Braintree Town. The 41-year-old holds a UEFA Pro Licence and has coached in the Academies of Chelsea, Charlton Athletic, Southend United and lastly, West Ham United where he was their Academy’s Head of Coaching. He joined Braintree in 2018 as Assistant Manager to Hakan Heyrettin and took over as First Team Manager when Heyrettin joined Maidstone in January 2019. Unfortunately for Braintree, their upturn in form wasn’t enough to keep them in the division and they were relegated along with the Shots, however, he departed Braintree as a popular figure and is held in high regard by fans and staff there. 1 Mitch Walker Walker became Shots boss Danny Searle’s fourth signing of the summer when he joined from Dover Athletic in June 2019. He spent seven years with the Whites, amassing a total of 279 appearances and helped guide the Kent side to promotion from the National League South. He started his career at Brighton & Hove 06 THE DAGGER

Albion, making one solitary first-team appearance, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 League One victory over Yeovil Town in 2010. He also spent time out on loan at Eastbourne Borough and Welling United whilst at the Seagulls before joining Dover in 2012.

recording one assist for Crawley Town during this time. He has also previously won promotion to the National League in 2018/19 with Torquay United, playing 23 times and will be looking to further his National League promotion record with Aldershot Town next season.

2 George Fowler Originally joined the Shots from Ipswich Town on loan in September 2017, after several extensions to his loan he joined the Shots on a permanent deal in January 2018 after making just one first-team appearance for Ipswich which was against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. He started the 2018/19 season well, scoring his first Shots goal in an FA Cup draw with League One Bradford City, his season was cut short a week later through injury and he signed a new one-year deal in July 2019.

6 Kodi Lyons-Foster Lyons-Foster joined in June 2019 for his second spell at the club and was new Shots boss Danny Searle’s first signing along with Ollie O’Dwyer. He joined Bristol City from Villa in 2016 but didn’t make a senior appearance there and spent time out on loan at Guernsey. He joined the Shots in 2017 after a successful trial but left the club at the expiration of his contract in January 2018 after making seven appearances. He then joined Whitehawk on a permanent deal after an initial loan period from Aldershot before joining newly promoted Braintree Town in the National League.

4 Jamie Sendles-White The former Northern Ireland youth international committed to the club after a spell with Crawley Town in League Two, having previously spent time in the Scottish Premiership with Hamilton Academical as well. Sendles-White made 14 appearances for the Red Devils in League Two last season, along with also

7 James Rowe Rowe was initially released by the Shots at the end of the 2017-18 season but rejoined the club on trial this pre-season where his performances impressed enough for him to earn a new deal. He has been

relegated from the EFL with Tranmere Rovers but won the National League the season after with Cheltenham Town in 2015-16. He began his career at Reading where he didn’t make a first-team appearance and had spells on loan at Lewes and Basingstoke Town before a move to Forest Green Rovers preceded his arrival at Tranmere. He signed a new deal in June this year. 9 Mo Bettamer The 26-year-old forward joined The Shots from Barnet FC in October 2019 on a contract through to the end of the season. Bettamer scored six goals in just 15 appearances for both his and current Shots manager Danny Searle’s former club Braintree Town and will be looking to continue his impressive goal-scoring record. During his time with Staines Town, the former Libya Under-20 international also bagged an impressive 29 goals in all competitions in the 2017/18 season. Although primarily a centre-forward, Bettamer is also very versatile and is capable of playing as a left-winger. 10 Chike Kandi 24-year-old Chike has played for both Chelsea’s youth and Brighton and Hove Albion’s youth team before moving into non-league. He has played for the likes of Leatherhead, Woking and most recently Dagenham & Redbridge, where he spent three years and impressed with both his rapid pace and eye in front of goal. 11 Harry Panayiotou Panayiotou signed for the Shots in July 2019 after a spell in the Greek Second

Division with Aittitos Spata. He started his career at Leicester City where he scored in his only first-team appearance, an injurytime winner against Leeds United at Elland Road. He spent time out on loan at Port Vale and Raith Rovers before joining National League side Barrow in 2016. He spent two seasons at the Bluebirds with a loan spell at Salford City included before a move to Nuneaton Borough preceded his move to Greece. Panayiotou is a St Kitts and Nevis international with an impressive strike rate for the Sugar Boyz, scoring on average every other game.

14 Joel Nouble Forward Joel can play on the wing and up front and after scoring an impressive 10 goals in 34 games for Concord Rangers last season, he will be looking to make that step up into the National League with Aldershot. He came through the academy at Dagenham & Redbridge and made his Football League debut in 2014 in a 3-2 win over Cheltenham Town.

12 Alfy Whittingham Whittingham joined the Shots from Hungerford Town in July 2019 after spending last season at the National League South side, where he was named their Young Player of the Season. Before that, he spent three seasons at Havant & Waterlooville where he made a handful of first-team appearances. He also spent time out on loan at Hungerford Town, AFC Totton and Petersfield Town. He is the son of Portsmouth legend Guy Whittingham and scored against Pompey for the Shots in a 4-0 win in pre-season.

15 Jermaine Anderson The 24-year-old started his youth career at Premier League side Arsenal, before joining League One side Peterborough United’s youth system in 2012, where he went on to make 76 appearances for Posh in the Championship, League One, FA Cup and League Cup as well. Anderson then spent the 2018/19 season on loan at both Doncaster Rover and Bradford City in the EFL League One, playing 25 times in all competitions for both clubs, scoring twice, before being released by Peterborough United at the end of the season, where he joined Bradford City permanently in January 2019 on a one-year deal, where he made two appearances before leaving at the start of this season.

13 Ryan Hall Hall is the Academy’s number 1 ‘keeper and his impressive performances in Academy matches and training with the first team saw him called up to the bench for the Shots National League match away to Barrow in March 2019. He made his firstteam debut in the Shots FA Trophy 1st Round replay against Bedford Town last season, in which he captained a youthful Shots team.

20 Toby Edser The central midfielder, who played youth football at Charlton Athletic, came through Nottingham Forest’s academy and signed full professional forms in August 2017. Having captained the U23 side on several occasions, Edser was sent out on loan to Woking, then Port Vale before returning to the Cards for a second loan spell last campaign. The 21-year-old had been on trial with the club before the 20/21 season

KEYMAN JOSH REES Josh started his football career in the Arsenal Academy, where he was until 2013 when he moved to Nottingham Forest and made his football league debut. The 26-year-old, after a few loan moves out of Nottingham, has since become an established National League player, playing for the likes of Torquay United, Gillingham and until today, Bromley. His most prolific season was in 17/18 where he notched 16 goals and 8 assists for Bromley in the National League.

and made a clear impact, contributing to several goals and assists, prompting Danny Searle to make the move for him. 22 Giles Phillips The 23-year-old started his career at FC Barrington USA in June 2017, before becoming the first Carthage College player to sign a professional contract, signing with Championship side Queens Park Rangers in February 2019. Phillips then spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL League One, playing 16 times in all competitions before being released by QPR at the end of the season, where he joined Wycombe permanently on August 20, 2020, on a one-year deal. Phillips joins the Shots on a short-term loan until January 2021 and will wear the number 22 during his time here. 23 Killian Colombie The French-born player is primarily a rightback, but can also play on either side of the pitch as a winger or a wing. Having played in the youth systems at Paris SaintGermain and AS Montigny-le-Bretonneux in his homeland, he went to America to study at Iona College in the New Rochelle area of New York in 2015. He most recently played for Sporting Kansas II

before moving to England and joining the Shots. 25 Shadrach Ogie The Irish defender who moved over to England to join League Two side Leyton Orient came through the academy system there before signing full professional forms in February 2019 and joins us on an initial one-month loan deal. The 19-year-old has performed on the international stage too, making his debut for the Republic of Ireland under-18’s against Turkey u18s, a month after making his under-19 debut for Ireland in February 2019. 26 Lewis Kinsella Left-back who came through Arsenal’s Academy before moving to Aston Villa’s Academy in 2011. Failed to make an appearance at the Villans but had spells out on loan at League Two side Luton Town, where he made his professional debut and at Kidderminster Harriers in the National League Premier. Signed permanently with Colchester United in 2016 where he made 29 appearances before moving to the Shots initially on loan for a month, before signing permanently at the end of January 2018 where his performances earned him another one-year deal with the club in May.

I 05.04.21 V ALDERSHOT TOWN

30 Ricky Miller It is in the National League systems where Miller played his best football, scoring 28 goals in 46 games for National League North side Boston United in 2013-14, before going on to score 22 goals in 54 games in the National League with Dover Athletic in 2015-16. However, it was the season after in 2016-17 that saw Miller’s best return of goals in professional football, scoring 45 goals in 46 games for Dover as they narrowly missed out on a play-off position, with the forward finishing the season as top scorer in the National League, 15 goals clear of second-placed Christian Doidge. He joins Aldershot Town with the hope to continue this kind of goalscoring form to see the Shots push higher up in the table. 44 Ross McCormack The former Scotland international has a very established career at Championship level, scoring lots of goals in several productive seasons for Cardiff City, Leeds United, Fulham and Aston Villa. The 34year-old, who has been signed for a combined fee of nearly £25 million during his career, will bring a huge amount of experience and quality to Danny Searle’s squad.

DEAN RAN CE

THE CAPTAIN

HAPPY EASTER WEEKEND EVERYONE, AND I HOPE YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO TUNING IN FOR THIS AFTERNOON'S GAME.

The performances have been consistent now for a little while and it’s just the standard we have now set ourselves. I think Hartlepool started the game on Friday strongly, and probably deserved their goal. From that point though I feel we dominated large spells of the game and we’ve seen throughout the season that if we don’t take the opportunities that present themselves, then good teams will make you pay. Unfortunately the goals we concede are just down to little lapses in concentration which are the differences in these tight games. If we can tidy up on these small details you can see recently we are as good as any team in this league. Personally I think Hartlepool are the strongest team we have faced this season, so we can take huge confidence that we more than matched them in both games. I was really pleased for Robbo (Matt Robinson) to make his 150th appearance. It’s a huge achievement for him. He has been at the club for a little while now and he knows exactly what it means to play for Dagenham & Redbridge. He is desperate to succeed and that enthusiasm can be infectious. He is having a great season so far and I’m surprised to learn he had only scored the 1 goal before this season, he has great energy and good technique so there is no reason why his recent goal scoring form cannot continue and become a consistent addition to his game. Obviously both ourselves and Aldershot are wanting to bounce back immediately with a positive result after both suffering defeats on Friday. Games are coming thick and fast so you don’t have much time to dwell on previous games, whether we had won 10 THE DAGGER

I

or lost you put the game to bed quickly and focus on the next. Aldershot have good energy in their team along with some good 1 v 1 players going forward. I know Danny (Searle) won’t want his season to just fizzle out and like us will be wanting to finish as high as possible. It’s another team we can leapfrog with a win though which gets us closer to where we want to be at the end of the season. With so many games in such a short space of time, the majority of players will be playing with some kind of knock, we just manage it the best we can throughout the week so that we are able to perform on match days. Hopefully I'll continue to be alright to play. As a team we are still not focussing any further than our next game, so we don’t really focus on how many games we are playing in different periods. The management manage our loads and make sure we are in the best possible shape to be able to perform each game. It’s the gaffer's decision whether he thinks players need a rest and ultimately performances will dictate that. I’ve said before that we have quality throughout the squad so if a player comes in due to injury, fatigue or a poor performance then they’re more than capable of stepping in and staking their place in the team. On behalf of the team I want to send our thoughts and condolences to Lee Collins’ family and friends and everyone at Yeovil Town. Rest in Peace Lee Collins.

SATURDAY 27TH MARCH 2021 VICTORIA ROAD NATIONAL LEGUE KICK-OFF 3.00PM DAGGERS Justham, Johnson, Clark, Wright, Gordon, Robinson, Rance ©, Sagaf (Saunders 65’), Weston, McCallum, Balanta Unused Subs: Reynolds, McQueen, Khan, Jones TORQUAY Covolan, Wynter, Lemonheigh-Evans, Hall ©, Little, Andrews (Umerah 64’), Randell, Sherring, Boden (Kimpioka 57’), Law, Lewis. Unused Subs: MacDonald, Moxey, Waters.

Angelo Balanta’s late goal in the second half secured all three points for the Daggers, beating Torquay United 1-0 at the Chigwell Construction Stadium. The Daggers were the better of the two sides in the first half, as Matt Robinson and Will Wright saw opportunities on the visiting goal narrowly off target. Gary Johnson’s Torquay side upped the ante after the restart, with Josh Umerah only denied a goal by the fantastic reactions of Elliot Justham. Angelo Balanta broke through the Gulls defence to give Dagenham the lead with 12 minutes to play, firing an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. And despite an agonising miss from Benji Kimpioka, the hosts held on for an impressive three points against a side chasing automatic promotion. After a quiet opening ten minutes from both sides, the visiting Gulls looked to have broken through the Daggers’ defence, as Connor Lemonheigh-Evans was played through on goal. Before the midfielder could pull the trigger, Elliot Justham rushed off his line to pull off a great challenge to earn his side a goal kick. 14 THE DAGGER

I

ACTIONSTATIONS V TORQUAYUNITED

Daryl McMahon’s side responded well to that opportunity and created one for themselves in the 15th minute. Working the ball down the right-hand side, Myles Weston whipped a low ball into the box, one which the returning Robinson could only fire into the side netting. As the Daggers started to settle into the game, they began to find more space which they could exploit behind the Torquay defence. In the 22nd minute, Wright collected the ball inside the visiting penalty area, following excellent play from the hosts, before cutting inside his marker and bending the ball narrowly wide of the top corner. Having scored a glorious winner against Altrincham the previous week, Wright was presented with the opportunity to match that effort when Dagenham were awarded a freekick in a similar area of the pitch. Unfortunately, having struck it well, the ball was too slow to dip, clearing the crossbar by a matter of inches. McMahon’s Daggers looked to be in the ascendancy, as the Gulls were struggling to deal with the windy conditions. In the 35th minute, having worked the ball down the flank, Weston decided to have a go for himself, turning centrally before getting his left foot behind a powerful shot, one which Lucas Covolan was equal to. Three minutes later, it looked as though Liam Gordon had finally broken through, collecting a Robinson through ball to find himself in acres of space on the left-hand side. Centring the ball, Gordon was left frustrated as the ball took a deflection and rolled into the welcoming arms of the Torquay ‘keeper. With five minutes left in the first half, the visitors were adamant they were due a penalty, as Adam Randell’s shot looked to hit the arm of Kenny Clark. The referee immediately waived those appeals away as the Daggers thumped the ball away from danger. On the stroke of half time, the in-form Angelo Balanta had the hosts’ best chance of the half, leaving his marker on the floor with some excellent footwork, but Covolan was again able to keep the Daggers at bay, getting both hands to a ball which looked destined for the back of the net. The call from McMahon at the break must have been for more of the same and after only two minutes of the second half, Dagenham

05.04.21 V ALDERSHOT TOWN

almost had the lead. Getting on the end of a powerfully hit cross, Balanta saw his towering header drift just wide of Covolan’s goal. In the 51st minute, after the Gulls had a great chance at the other end, it was the Daggers’ turn to shout for a penalty when it looked as though McCallum was felled inside the area as he was about to fire the hosts ahead. To the dismay of the those in red shirts, the referee was not interested and turned their appeals down. As the game approached the hour mark, Torquay looked to be in the ascendancy, as Gary Johnson handed a debut to new signing Benji Kimpioka – on loan from Sunderland. In the 61st minute, Amari Little almost got to a long diagonal ball into the box, but the attempted assist had too much power on it as the midfielder sent his header high and wide. Having put in a terrific performance against Hartlepool, Justham was performing magic once again for Dagenham to keep the scores level, diving brilliantly in the 67th minute to tip Josh Umerah’s header off the goal line and away from danger. With 20 minutes left to play, McMahon’s side were starting to look a lot more threatening on the ball. After Gordon had fed the ball to Dean Rance just outside the penalty area, the captain’s side-footed shot was off target as the ball cleared the crossbar. Improving as the second half went along, the Daggers were rewarded for their pressing play when, in the 78th minute, the Torquay resistance finally broke. After the ball found Balanta inside the box, the Colombian steadied himself before firing the ball beyond the reach of Covolan. Throwing bodies at the Dagenham box, the Gulls were almost caught out in the 85th minute when Balanta raced away at goal. Moving the ball onto his right foot, he saw his shot take a deflection which took the ball agonisingly wide of goal. With seconds remaining in the game, the visitors almost snatched a win from the Daggers’ hands when Kimpioka pulled the trigger deep in the penalty area, but his shot took the slightest of touches off Umerah’s boot, a missed opportunity that cost his side a share of the spoils.

I N CO NVER SATION

MATT ROBINSON “IT IS OBVIOUSLY A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT AND A GREAT MILESTONE IN MY CAREER TO HAVE PLAYED 150 GAMES FOR SUCH A GREAT CLUB.”

DAGGERS’ MIDFIELD MAESTRO MATT ROBINSON SPEAKS ABOUT HIS CAREER MILESTONE FOR THE CLUB AHEAD OF TODAY’S GAME AGAINST ALDERSHOT.

To win over the supporters of the club that you play for, hard work, dedication, and a top-quality attitude are attributes that should be considered absolutely essential. Anything less than that and any player, whether professional or part-time, will find it hard to produce their best football.

Matt Robinson is a man who has put blood, sweat and tears into giving Dagenham & Redbridge his absolute all since joining the club from Luton Town in 2016, producing a number of fine performances that have established his place as a firm fan favourite.

In Good Friday’s 2-1 road defeat to title-chasing Hartlepool United, Robinson was able to make his 150th appearance for the club, marking the occasion with an impressive diving header that at the time had given the Daggers a fighting chance of claiming at least a point.

“It is obviously a great achievement and a great milestone in my career to have played 150 games for such a great club,” said the in-form midfielder.

“It is a great milestone in this day and age because players move around so much, but it is one that I am obviously chuffed with. Not so much with the result on Friday, but I got to mark it with a goal which was somewhat of a consolation.”

Whilst the loss to the Monkey Hangers on Good Friday will do little to console Robinson, he does have far fonder memories of playing at the Vic.

“Easily. Scoring away at Hartlepool in the 92nd minute in 2018, I think on the 1st of December, which was my first goal for Dagenham. I would have taken my shirt off to celebrate if I were not already on a booking,” he remembered fondly about his favourite moment for the club. “We thought we scraped a point but later, I was on the near post for a corner, and it has gone out. There was a little bit of head tennis before Tomi carried the ball half the length of the pitch, as I had run the whole length of the pitch beside him to tap the ball home. “My Mum and Dad were there which made it an even better day.”

In a National League campaign which has become harder and harder to predict, the Daggers’ hopes of claiming one of six play-off places on offer were dealt a blow, with the club now ten points behind Wrexham in 7th.

However, with a play-off place still a possibility for Daryl McMahon’s side, Robinson was quick to highlight that the ultimate goal of this team, whether that be this season or next, was to achieve promotion. “I think that the main objective has to be to get the team and the club back to the Football League, which is where, ultimately, we want to be and deserve to be. Everything else after that is obsolete and does not matter as much.” he said. “I think that has been the objective, especially since our new owners took over. They have been excellent, and they have told the fans that is what our aim is.

“Anything less than that, I think we will have fallen short. It may not happen this year, but we are putting things in place and building to do it in the coming seasons.” With games coming thick and fast, the Daggers are presented an immediate opportunity to put the Hartlepool defeat behind them, as Aldershot Town visit the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Only one place above McMahon’s men in 16th, and with both teams still eyeing a late surge up the National League table, Monday’s match will prove to be another stern test for this Dagenham side. “One thing that I always say whether you win, lose or draw, the best thing about football is there is another game and in this league, that is probably in three or four days,” said Robinson.

“It has only been a few days, it feels like we got back from Hartlepool yesterday, but there is another game around the corner and Aldershot are another team that probably have not hit the heights that they thought they might this year. “In the last few seasons, they have been kind of up there and they are obviously another hard-working team like ourselves. We just need to outwork them, outplay them and get three points.”
