Witness the Magic: The Sun Miracle of Abu Simbel 2025/26
Twice a year, on February 22 and October 22, a spectacular solar event takes place at Abu Simbel. For just 20 minutes, the morning sunlight reaches the temple’s sanctuary, 65 meters inside, illuminating three of its four deity statues: Re, RamsesII,andAmun.Thefourthstatue,Ptah,godof theunderworld,remainsindarkness.
This astronomical alignment was carefully planned during the temple’s construction by Ramses II in the 13th century BC. However, due to the relocation of the temple in the 1960s to save it from flooding by Lake Nasser, the Sun Miracle now occurs a day later thanoriginallyintended.
The event draws visitors from around the world, followed by a Sun Festival on the temple forecourt, where whirling dervishes perform and celebrate Ramses II’s deification as a god-king. It remains one ofEgypt’smostbreathtakingancientspectacles.
