“Roos, Paul Johannes. Captain of first South African international rugby team. Born near Stellenbosch in 1880, and educated at Wellington and Stellenbosch. Having qualified as a teacher, he found his first post at Rustenburg, Transvaal in 1902. Ever since 1897, in his college days, he had been an outstanding rugby player, and when, in 1903, he returned to Stellenbosch, he was soon one of the best-known men in the game. In 1906 he captained the first South African overseas rugby team, the ‘Spring-Bokken’ or Springboks, and gained an almost unbroken series of victories in Britain and France. He became headmaster of a boys school, was a leading rugby administrator, was elected to Parliament and died in 1948” (Rosenthal 1967:466).
