Buchu
“Buchu (Reitraceae). A H******** word. Erect, branching shrub up to 6 feet, with small pinkish-white flowers and strongly aromatic leaves, used medicinally—Buchu brandy is an excellent tonic—and for flavouring brandy. Mountain and open kloofs in Western Province, mostly above 1,000 feet. Both Barosma crenulata and Barosma betulina yield folia buchu. The family includes China Flower and Shepherd’s Delight (Adenandra), little Cape mountain shrubs with pink 5-petalled flowers and aromatic leaves, and the beautiful Cape Chestnut (Calodendrum) (see CHESTNUT, CAPE)” (Rosenthal 1967:82).
