Namib

“Namib. Desert region along the coast of South-West Africa, Varying in width from 30 to 80 miles, it consists in the main of sand dunes, from which hills of rock and gravel occasionally emerge. The Namib extends with few interruptions for almost a thousand miles along the borders of Angola to near the mouth of the Orange River, but in the area north of Swakop River (q.v.) the dunes are lower and less continuous, while occasional watercourses break through to the sea. Despite its barrenness the Namib has a certain amount of vegetation and wild life. (See WELWITSCHIA MIRABILIS.) The discovery of diamonds in the Namib in 1904 led to the establishment in certain areas of important workings. Boreholes in the river valleys have at times produced considerable supplies of water” (Rosenthal 1967:379).
