Postage Stamps, South Africa

“1926 — 1 January (½d. and 1 d. values) and 1 May (6d value). Watermark: Multiple Springbok’s Head. Printed by Waterlow & Sons, Ltd., London, and later by Government Printer, Pretoria. All these and subsequent issues of pictorial stamps are best collected in attached pairs (horizontal) due to the fact that the introduction of these stamps marked two innovations, in that Afrikaans replaced Nederlands in the inscriptions, also that they are unilingual, English and Afrikaans alternating throughout the sheet” (Rosenthal & Blum 1969:144).

Republic of South Africa

“Diamonds were discovered in South Africa

in 1866, and the Diamond Industry was firmly established with the formation of De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888. The industry occupies an important place in the economy of Southern Africa and was the foundation of its modern industrialisation. The annual value of the joint output of the South African Republic and SouthWest Africa is higher than that of any other country in the world…” (Rosenthal 1967:149-152).

“Republic of South Africa. Title since May 31, 1961, of the former Union of South Africa (q.v.). Its total area is 472,359 sq. miles, of which the Cape Province represents 277,113 sq. miles, plus 374 sq. miles of Walvis Bay (q.v.) administered as part of South-West Africa; the Transvaal 110,450 sq. miles; the Orange Free State 49,866 sq. miles; and Natal 33,578 sq. miles. Marion Island and Prince Edward Island in the southern Indian Ocean also form part of the Republic and are administered by the Republic. Its ocean currents, plateau formation and distance from the Equator give most of the Republic a fairly temperate climate suitable for White settlement … The population in 1966 was 18,298,000, of whom 3,481,000 were White. According to the last census covering all races, in 1960, the largest White population, 1,455,372 was in the Transvaal, with 997,377 in the Cape, 340,293 in Natal and 274,596 in the Orange Free State. Population by provinces (all races) (1960) … There are over 17,000 factories, employing more than 900,000 people, of whom nearly 300,000 are white. The number of farms occupied by Whites is over 120,000, representing an area of about 220,000,000 acres. About 12,000,000 acres under cultivation, two-thirds of this being under maize. See also FORESTRY, TRANSPORT, ROMANDUTCH LAW, BANTU PEOPLES, as well as individual entries” (Rosenthal 1967:446-447).
