Union Buildings
“Union Buildings. The seat of the Government in Pretoria. Its construction was approved by the Transvaal Colonial government, which earmarked the necessary funds. Building began in 1910, when the foundation stone was laid by the Duke Of Connaught, and was completed in 1913. The design, embodying many old Dutch architectural motifs, was by Sir Herbert Baker, and the cost £1,130,000. Dominating the summit of Meintjies Kop, the building, with its great amphitheatre, can house over 1,500 officials. In its basement are the Government archives of the Transvaal and of the Union” (Rosenthal 1967:580).

“1927 — 54. First printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., Ltd., London, and later by Government Printer, Pretoria. Watermark: Multiple Springbok’s Head. As they were printed alternately in English and Afrikaans, they are best collected in attached pairs. In 1933, the words ‘Suidafrika’ on the Afrikaans stamps was altered to the new hyphenated ‘Suid-Afrika inscription. Numerous shades, printings, varieties and alterations in the design of these issues exist, in both the unhyphenated and the hyphenated series, and offer an immense field of study and specialization for the advanced collector. The South African Handbook Catalogue should be consulted for details and guidance” (Rosenthal & Blum 1969:144-145).
