Catholic Church in Southern Africa
“Catholic Church in Southern Africa. The first Catholic service held in South Africa of which there is historical record was the celebration of Mass following the erection of the Padrao of St. Gregory by Bartholomew Diaz on Santa Cruz Island, near ALgoa Bay, in 1487. A small chapel built at Mossel Bay by João de Nova in 1501 was the first Catholic place of worship. The oldest existing Catholic church in South Africa is St Mary’s Cathedral, Cape Town begun in 1840. Until 1805, with the arrival in Cape Town of three priests from the Netherlands, there was no organised Catholic worship, although there were Catholics among the inhabitants of the Cape. Missions to the Bantu began in 1854, when two priests were sent to Zululand by Bishop Allard, O.M.I. The Mariannhill Mission Society developed from the Trappists who founded Mariannhill Mission in 1883 …” (Rosenthal 1967:101).
