Great Trek
“Great Trek. Mass emigration of colonists, mostly of Dutch origin, from the Cape of Good Hope in the 1830’s. Isolated treks had been in progress almost since the beginning of European settlement in South Africa. Cases of the Great Trek were manifold, including the lack of understanding by the British Colonial Office and their representatives of the problems of the Frontier farmers, the inadequate compensation received for slaves liberated under the Emancipation Law, the return to the neighbouring tribes of the ‘Province of Queen Adelaide’ which had been set up as a buffer territory, also an inborn dislike of tax-paying and centralised administration by many of the earlier colonists…” (Rosenthal 1967:222-223).
