FRESHMAN SALESIAN RETREAT donald yu don bosco On Aug 24 – 25, 2012, the Don Bosco Tech Key Clubbers participated in the Freshmen Salesian Experience Retreat. The retreat is sponsored by the Youth Ministry Program in Don Bosco. We partook in the retreat through the Big Brother Program. The Big Brother Program is designed to welcome freshman to the Bosco Tech family in an exciting and loving way. The first day of school can be intimidating and scary for the freshmen. As a club, we helped out around the school, guided the freshmen round the campus, and interacted with them. Ricky Tham and his fellow Key Clubbers were put into groups with the freshman. We acted as Big Brothers by how we provided the incoming students with more knowledge about the school and the culture of Bosco Tech. If freshmen had any difficulties, they were able to ask us questions like, "Where are my classes?", and anything else they might want to know about the school. The second day of the retreat, we went to the beach for the freshmen so that they can enjoy their time and help break the ice. But before we have fun at the beach, we first have to have mass, because Don Bosco called for an oratory model where a boy can play, pray, receive an education. During the mass, Big Brothers, Key Clubbers, and freshmen prayed to have a fun and safe day and to have a fun and successful year. After the mass, it was time for fun. Freshmen were paired with us for some ice breaking competition of sports and fun. Key Clubbers and the Big Brothers had many fun games and activities for everyone. We had sports like soccer and football for freshmen who were athletic and we had activities that didn’t require that much athletic skill like water-balloon toss. The ice broke with the freshmen; they started to make friends and participate more as we played more sports and done more activities. For the most part, we helped Don Bosco Tech, and more importantly we welcome the freshmen to our school. The retreat set an environment that emphasizes fun and group activities. As we participated in the retreat, we help turn the daunting first day of the freshmen into one of their most enjoyable and happiest first day of school.
