January 2019 marks the start of the Czech Film Fund’s seventh year in existence. I would contend that in the last six years the fund has become a stable state institution and a partner of equal standing to similar institutions abroad. Through stabilized, compound financing, support for all kinds of genres and formats, independence and transparency in grant adjudication, and not least through the high level of funding provided to minority (and other) co-production films over the last three years, the fund has been able to help Czech producers collaborate on attractive European projects. For the third year now, the Czech Film Fund has included the Czech Film Center, which cooperates with international festivals, consults programmers about current Czech films, and recommends films for potential inclusion in programs. Hence, the Czech Film Center works with films that the fund has financed from the outset, from the initial screenplay, to development, and through to production. The Czech Republic may be a small country, but it is a great one. And it is a country of great film talents: Helena Třeštíková, Olga Sommerová, Miroslav Janek, Karel Vachek, Lukáš Kokeš, Klára Tasovská, Jan Gebert, as well as many others. We are the country with a cinematic tradition, and with prospects for the future. Over the last seven years I have tried on a daily basis to keep the fund ready to support the incredible talent we are gifted with. Thanks in particular to the increased financial resources available since 2016, it has been possible to give bigger grants to many uniquely interesting projects that await distribution this year, which I believe will bear out my hopes for wonderful talent our country has to offer.

INTRODUCTION With the beginning of the new year, we take a look back at the just finished year of 2018, presenting an overview of what’s been dished up, as well as what’s cooking, in Czech cinema.

IN THEATRES In 2018, twenty-nine Czech documentary films were released in Czech cinemas. Among those, adventurous Wilder Than Wilderness by Marián Polák, produced by Radim Procházka was the biggest box office hit, drawing around 90 000 moviegoers.

International Achievements Czech documentaries continued to thrive last year. The painfully relevant documentary When the War Comes, from director Jan Gebert produced by Radovan Síbrt’s PINK, in cooperation with HBO Europe and the Croatian company Hulahop got a very good reception at the Berlinale, where it was presented in the Panorama section. Two Czech documentaries were selected to be screened at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, as part of a new program called the Changing Face of Europe, initiated by European Film Promotion: The Russian Job, by Petr Horký, and The White World According to Daliborek, Vít Klusák’s stylized portrait of a Czech neo-Nazi. The international competition of Visions du Réel hosted the world premiere of the Latvian-Czech coproduction documentary D Is for Division, directed by Dāvis Sīmanis, produced by Ego Media and Produkce Radim Procházka. Putin’s Witnesses by Vitaly Mansky, shot as a coproduction between Latvia, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic (Hypermarket Film), premiered at the Karlovy Vary IFF, winning the main prize in the Documentary Films Competition before going on to screenings at the Toronto IFF, IDFA, and other festivals. Karlovy Vary IFF also premiered, as part of its Documentary Film Competition, Breaking News, by Tomáš Bojar, and Inside the War on ISIS (former title: Inside Mosul), the debut by courageous director Jana Andert. The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) invited documentary director Helena Třeštíková to be the guest of honor at the festival where seven of her most famous and important works were screened. In addition, Třeštíková presented her Top 10, the ten works that most influenced her as a filmmaker, introducing them to the IDFA audience.

Czech Participation in Coproduction Markets Numerous Czech projects were presented in coproduction markets to favorable response. The experimental documentary My Unknown Soldier, directed by Anna Kryvenko and produced by Michal Kráčmer (Analog Vision), was selected for the documentary work in progress section of the coproduction forum When East Meets West, Last Stop Trieste. The documentary project Kiruna 2.0 (directed by Greta Stocklassa, produced by Analog Vision – Veronika Kührová) was presented in January at North Pitch—Below Zero, organized by the European Documentary Network, in collaboration with the Tromso IFF in Norway. Another Czech documentary project was presented in the 2018 edition of the Hot Docs Forum: Wishing on a Star, directed by Peter Kerekes, produced by Videomante (Italy), Mischief Films (Austria), Artcam Films (Czech Republic), and Peter Kerekes (Slovak Republic).

In the Works: Documentary Projects Last year saw a number of promising projects in the development and production stages that received support from the Czech Film Fund. Documentary filmmaking is a genre that has been on the rise in the Czech Republic for decades and is now giving narrative filmmaking a run for its money in terms of acclaim and success abroad. And more promising projects are underway. Among those that received the highest levels of funding from the CFF for production were Every Single Minute, by director Erika Hníková (produced by Jiří Konečný – endorfilm), a portrait of a family raising their little boy through a parenting philosophy called Kameveda. The project received financing of € 76,923. Another project dealing with children and parenting is Vít Klusák’s Caught in the Net, which uses an original experiment to uncover the taboo topic of online child abuse (funding: € 57,692). Pongo Story, directed by Tomáš Kratochvíl and produced by Radim Procházka, follows a successful Roma family who left the Czech Republic for Britain 12 years ago, was supported with € 46,154. Another four projects in development each received € 15,385: Happily for Ever, directed by Jana Počtová, looks at contemporary relationships; Woods, directed by Lukáš Kokeš and Klára Tasovská, produced by Pavla Janoušková Kubečková (nutprodukce), follows children involved in a forest adventure game; Adam Ondra: Pushing the Limits, directed by Jan Šimánek and Petr Záruba, is the portrait of a rock climber; and Storyteller of the Jungle: Otto Placht, by director Alice Růžičková, features a painter inspired by the Shipibo Amazonian Indian tribe.

Projects Nearing Completion Noteworthy Czech films of all types have premieres approaching. Solo, one of the projects vying for festival and domestic audiences in the field of documentary film, is the portrait of a talented Argentine pianist recovering from addiction in a psychiatric hospital in Buenos Aires, and marks the feature debut of Czech-based French director Artemio Benki. Living legend of Czech documentary filmmaking Helena Třeštíková is preparing a portrait of Miloš Forman titled Forman versus Forman. Director Eva Tomanová has made Another Chance, the story of a lopsided love affair between a successful, middle-aged woman and a young marriage impostor. And director Viera Čákanyová describes her upcoming documentary essay, FREM, as a requiem for Homo sapiens as a species on the decline.

International Funding: Eurimages One documentary film with Czech participation received grants from the Eurimages Fund in 2018: Fever, by Helen Simon (Germany/Czech Republic, € 160,000).

Czech Film Awards – Czech Lions and Czech Film Critics’ Awards The 8th edition of the Czech Film Critics’ Awards 2017 conferred the prize for Best Documentary Film to director Miro Remo and producer Jiří Konečný (endorfilm) for their portrait of one of the most popular Slovak singers of all times called Richard Müller: This Is Not Me. At the 25th Czech Lion Awards, the award for Best Documentary Feature went also to a portrait of a well-known artist, this time to Cervena following the life story of famous opera singer Soňa Červená. The film was directed by Olga Sommerová and produced by Pavel Berčík (Evolution Films).

They met on Friday, getting married secretly on Sunday. They had to run away from their parents’ wrath and rather spent their honeymoon among the cannibals in the South Seas, where they lost both their camera and their illusions. At the moment when many people would abandon filming, Martin and Osa Johnson risked their lives to bring the testimony of a diminishing wildlife. The film is an authentic footprint of the era when filming in Africa was more dangerous than lions or malaria. Although they were celebrities admired by Chaplin or British Royal Family, they are forgotten nowadays. This feature documentary discovers the work and legacy of these outstanding pioneer filmmakers in Africa for the first time in a new perspective.

The Czech president is expected to announce his decision whether he is going to run for the office again. The newsrooms in the Czech Television and Hospodářské noviny daily have been closely monitoring the event since early morning. This gives us opportunity to get a close look at two different teams of reporters and editors as they put together their “breaking news”, both covering the same event. However, the way these two newsrooms go about their business is not quite the same. The resulting film offers a very fresh and authentic inside look into the practices of journalists working for the traditional media, within the context of our hectic times characterised by information overload.

Central Bus Station is one of the biggest and at the same time, one of the most pathetic stations in the world. Its architect‘s visionary plans for a building that will engulf its visitors turned into an endless maze of corridors. The gift for Tel Aviv’s citizens now serves as a haven for refugees from all over the world. Yonatan has been guiding people through for 17 years already, showing them the dark side of the station. He discovers communities in places that were supposed to stay hidden. These communities are overseeing their traditions and values and they want to defend their new home. This way, the building reflects a world outside its walls.

On an archival black and white photograph, a Latvian woman – Hermine Purina, the first victim of the Soviet invasion of Latvia in 1940 – is trying to save her son Voldemärs by covering him with her own body. This photograph became an inspiration for contemplating over film’s boundaries – geographical as well as metaphorical. Russians and Latvians sense the import of historical realities, captured by the photograph, in completely different ways. One side associates it with the liberation and the beginning of the victorious war, for the other it means the loss of freedom and the presence of invaders. One side celebrates, while the other grieves. An explosive testament about the tension on the eastern borders of the EU.

The docu-fiction essay portrays self-taught but ambitious right-wing populists who long to play a highstakes game and act as fictional characters, grey eminences or manly heroes. Through the character of a propagandist cinematographer and movie freak, the film follows the builders of a Czech local movement agitating against Islam and immigration in a country which refuses to accept refugees and where no refugees come. The cinematographer engages his friend in the movement: a sociologist who takes books about the clash of civilizations seriously. They both relate to living a great story in which big history meets small history, the dominating meets the dominated, sense meets absurdity, reality meets fiction, while everything is pervaded by ideology which both builds and destroys. contact Frame Films – Hana Šilarová hana@framefilms.cz +420 602 792 856

This four-hour documentary – a compilation of Czech Television’s eponymous series – systematically charts life in prison and the associated societal circumstances through looking at human fates on both sides of the bars. Using the powerful stories of several individuals who are at different stages of their incarceration, the film presents not only a crosssectional view of the current correctional system but also contemplations about guilt, punishment, justice, and whether an individual caught in the gears of a repressive system can actually remedy their behaviour and change.

The students not only attended Grygar’s public lectures during his long journeys across the Czech Republic, but also gained exclusive access to Argentine Pierre Auger Observatory, where the Czech scientist participates in fascinating cosmic radiation research. In addition to scientific activities, the film focuses on Grygar’s life story. Finally, he is asked the most difficult question: How is it possible that as a scientist he believes in God?

The film maps his work, which is slowly coming to a close, thus capturing his impact on the perception of the society. The Sudetenland has been the topic of his work for fifty years. The story of development of skateboarding in Czechoslovakia during 1975–1989. The skateboarding is for the director a starting point in looking for signs of freedom outside the mainstream society controlled by the communist regime. This new western sport became quite attractive and contagious kind of entertainment for young people in otherwise greyish environment of socialist Czechoslovakia. Using some old found footage never shown before, the audience will have a chance to learn more about the beginnings of this sport in the region and about the unique community.

For over half a century the little town of Neskaupstadur in eastern Iceland was nicknamed “Little Moscow” due to its communist rule. But the unassuming town has been going through a period of drastic transformation, with capitalist politics now taking hold. The town’s main companies have been privatized, oil extractions are being discussed and a tunnel that will open up the previously isolated town is being drilled. The viewer is introduced to some interesting characters from the city, each with their own views and attitudes towards the past and future of their town. Through them 20th century socialism is analyzed, as well as the changes capitalist politics bring to a small town like Neskaupstadur.

Ondrej Jajcaj has been obsessed with death since childhood. Starting as a tomb raider, he became self-proclaimed scientist/philosopher, focused on the dental remnants of the dead. Jajcaj’s goal is to liberate society from fear of death. To accomplish this, he and his few followers set on a journey with his mobile caravan of death, moving from village to village and confronting people with the phenomenon of death. The journey eventually turns to Vienna, where Jajcaj returns the dental remnants of Johann Strauss and Johannes Brahms, which he took from their graves himself. Majorettes juggle with femur bones and Jajcaj’s caravan moves to another village. The journey doesn’t end, but loops into infinity.

We are following people who have transformed their hard experiences into meaningful activities as well as people who represent the ordinary life in the slum. They have one thing in common – they are trying to transform their home into a better place to live. Our characters are connected by Don – a young photographer who is trying to depict Kibera in another form. The main part of the film takes place against the background of the 2017 Kenyan General Elections. The film, co-directed by Radim Procházka, was an attempt to capture an authentic picture of Horáček’s election campaign, presenting his team’s tactics, interactions with both supporters and opponents, with journalists, and opposing candidates. Conceptual experimental film, loosely inspired by selected parts of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s philosophical masterpiece A Thousand Plateaus, focuses on audio-visual articulation of a notion as a fundament of thinking, through the medium of film. By using formal means, it thoughtfully actualizes certain philosophical concepts – such as “deterritorialization” through the usage of unsettled camera shooting, or “embedding” by using a camera effect vertigo (combination of zoom and camera movement in opposite directions).

We recreate the story based on several sources and word of mouth. Vít became a father very early, perhaps too early. Surprisingly enough, he fell happily and with determination into the parenthood. He adapted everything to the effort of provision of the family. He became a financial advisor – some kind of modern mercenary warrior operating in the jungle of finances. He soon becomes successful. When he learned to use his natural charisma in work, a huge career perspective opens before him. The success, however, is possible only for the price of moral compromise. The issue of fatherhood shows here in a different light. An urgent question arises; to what extent it is possible for a man to be a good father, whilst still seeking father himself. Joël Farges, a French filmmaker in his 60s is looking for a destiny of his favourite film from his childhood. It was a Prince Bayaya by Jiří Trnka. Trnka’s films were once known and popular in France. Trnka’s career peaked when the Cold War raged between the East and West blocks. His films were presented as an artistic counterweight to commercial production of Disney. Leftist western intellectuals were amazed; Trnka‘s films were narrated by Jean Cocteau and Richard Burton, winning prizes in Cannes and Venice and became a valuable export article for the totalitarian regime. Several months later, the boys from the Moroccan town of Salé headed to Czech Republic to experience the same thing vice versa. Two teams, two cultures, one mutual interaction. A walk on thin ice full of liberating humour.

In the middle of Europe, two nations coexist side by side, close to one another in many ways and yet worlds apart. The Czechs are dedicated atheists, while the Poles are born as baptized Catholics. Czechs shake their heads in disbelief at Polish piety, while Poles hold Czechs in contempt for living without God. A Czech documentary crew sets out on a summertime pilgrimage across Poland in order to investigate through the camera the concrete situation regarding the notion of “Czech atheism vs. Polish religion”.

The Heaven is a story of love, an unconditional love the caring (and unpaid) nuns give to unfortunate children. It’s a story about selfless sacrifice in a communist and fiercely materialistic society. The surge in numbers of abandoned handicapped babies started in 1979 when the “one child policy” was introduced in China. Being forced to have only one child, many parents who had a handicapped newborn simply killed or abandoned it and tried to have a healthy one, as children are expected to take care of their parents when they grow old.

The topic of higher education is getting more and more attention in the recent decades. Many young graduates have difficulties to find a job, but there are also pressures from market structures to form higher education in a different way, including the financing of schools. The pressures on reforms and introduction of school fees led to massive protests and debate on the quality of higher education and its role in society. A documentary about a uniquely Czech depiction of the female crotch as a diamond with a vertical line in the middle. The original vulgarity painted on walls and in public toilets with its recorded history reaching to the 17th century became a phenomenon that entered the highest levels of Czech art in the 20th century – be it drama, literature (Milan Kundera), visual art (Jindřich Štyrský) or film. At the same time, it left its humorous mark on the Czech population by giving it its “diamond perspective”. Paradoxically, the Czech diamond thus has become, though officially overlooked, an actual part of the Czech cultural heritage. On 28 September, 1973, two men claiming to be members of the Eagles of the Palestinian Revolution organization hijacked a passenger train on the Czechoslovak-Austrian border. There were Jewish emigres from the Soviet Union on the train, who were taken hostage. This was a unique kind of a Palestinian commando attack, for it was planned to take place behind the Iron Curtain. The main political target was the Soviet Union, generally perceived as the biggest supporter of the anti-Zionist cause. The perpetrators clearly stated their intentions and goals, yet the public image of their action was to be shaped by others. This story of the manipulation of reality lies at the core of the film.

Life without being able to see from birth, loss of “eyes“ when about to reach adulthood, coming to terms or the very opposite. Mutuality or contrast of stories of the young blind is the crucial link within the plot of this documentary. Even though one could call this topic “heavy”, these boys and girls are able to view themselves from a variety of angles, they are able to take the mickey out of themselves and their sarcasm sometimes gives one the shivers.

The film happens to be directed by the granddaughter of Radek Pilař, well known creator of beloved Czech children animated series such as Rumcajs and somewhat less known as a pioneer of video art in Czechoslovakia. The documentary brushes the dust off of those old VHS tapes to get a glimpse of early electronic images in our country and uncover the yet unmapped history of prerevolution Czech video art. Decades later they all “videists” still share their enthusiasm, obsessive curiosity, and futuristic visions about the use of new technologies for artistic expression.

The film takes us on a journey of the author and her diary. Something strange is happening in her life. A Moose is always appearing. Is it trying to tell her something? She has to follow. The story starts in Czechia and the Czech stories and protagonists lead us further, across the borders – the same way the Moose goes. Only here the real Moose odyssey starts. We are led through Europe and at the end to Canada, where the Moose message is finally fulfilled. On the way, in different places, she meets protagonists who all have something in common: they have participated in various humans‘ attempts to deal with moose, to control it. While the moose stayed the same specific indomesticable creature, people, after these encounters, ended up changed completely.

The relationship between people and bees is one of the best mapped phenomena in human history. In most cultures, the honey bee was considered a sacred animal and enjoyed great respect. Today, due to our irresponsible interventions in nature, it is facing extinction. Together with Honeymen, two amateur beekeepers from Brno, we set out to search for an answer to how to save the bees. However, it soon becomes clear that it is not only the bees that are dying; it is also something in us.
