January 2019 marks the start of the Czech Film Fund’s seventh year in existence. I would contend that in the last six years the fund has become a stable state institution and a partner of equal standing to similar institutions abroad. Through stabilized, compound financing, support for all kinds of genres and formats, independence and transparency in grant adjudication, and not least through the high level of funding provided to minority (and other) co-production films over the last three years, the fund has been able to help Czech producers collaborate on attractive European projects. For the third year now, the Czech Film Fund has included the Czech Film Center, which cooperates with international festivals, consults programmers about current Czech films, and recommends films for potential inclusion in programs. Hence, the Czech Film Center works with films that the fund has financed from the outset, from the initial screenplay, to development, and through to production. The Czech Republic may be a small country, but it is a great one. And it is a country of great film talents: Jiří Trnka, Břetislav Pojar, Karel Zeman, Michaela Pavlátová, Jan Švankmajer, as well as many others. We are the country that made Alice, we are a country with a cinematic tradition, and with prospects for the future. Over the last seven years I have tried on a daily basis to keep the fund ready to support the incredible talent we are gifted with. Thanks in particular to the increased financial resources available since 2016, it has been possible to give bigger grants to many uniquely interesting projects that await distribution this year, which I believe will bear out my hopes for wonderful talent our country has to offer.

INTRODUCTION With the beginning of new year, we take a look back at the just finished year 2018, presenting an overview of what’s been dished up, as well as what’s cooking, in Czech cinema.

IN THEATRES In 2018, three animated Czech films entered cinemas in the Czech Republic. Two of them based on an extremely popular Czech stop motion animation series Pat and Mat about two clumsy neighbors constantly fixing something, even when nothing is broke, got the biggest box-office, with Pat & Mat – Winter Fun reaching 90 000 moviegoers.

International Achievements And which Czech films were best received at foreign markets and festivals? One of last year’s most successful films was a surrealist freak show, combining animation with feature film, from a master of the genre: Insect, by Jan Švankmajer. After premiering at the IFF Rotterdam, the film, which the director says will be his last, appeared at a number of other foreign festivals to a largely positive response. A short film After was screened in the section Graduation Films in Competition in Annecy. The movie was directed by Matouš Valchář, a Faculty of Art and Design student from the University of West Bohemia.

Czech Participation in Coproduction Markets Numerous Czech projects were presented in coproduction markets to favorable response. A Czech-Slovak coproduction, short film The End (dir. David Štumpf, Michaela Mihalyiová) was presented to film professionals and potential partners alongside 36 other projects at the world-class pitching section Mifa Pitches in Annecy. The film is being produced by BFILM.cz together with Slovak BFILM and Prague‘s FAMU. Warsaw Kids Film Forum presented among projects in development the animated TV series The Little Odyssey (director Jakub Kouřil, produced by k-pictures); while the feature length film Rosa & Dara and Their Great Summer Adventure (director Martin Duda, produced by Bionaut) was selected for the Works in Progress section.

In the Works: Animated Projects Last year saw a number of promising projects in the development and production stages that received support from the Czech Film Fund. Promising projects are also underway in the area of animated film. These include two highly anticipated projects that have been years in the making: feature film My Sunny Maad by well-known Czech animator Michaela Pavlatová, produced by Petr Oukropec and Kateřina Černá – Negativ, and Even Mice Belong in Heaven by directors Denisa Grimmová and Jan Bubeniček, produced by Vladimír Lhoták – Fresh Films and Alexandre Charlet – Les Films du Cygne. Projects in the stage of development that were supported by the Czech Film Fund last year include Rosentaal (a MAUR film production, supported with € 46,154) and Golem (Hausbot Production, supported with € 34,615). The projects in production that received the highest funding were Tony, Shelly & Genius (producer Pavla Janoušková Kubečková – nutprodukce), which also received the Eurimages Co-production Development Award at the Cinekid Junior Co-production Market 2018, and Heart of a Tower (producer Peter Badač – BFILM), both of which were granted € 576,923.

Projects Nearing Completion Noteworthy Czech films of all types have premieres approaching. In the category of animated film, several interesting project are coming: Fritzi: A Miraculous Revolutionary Tale, by Ralf Kukula and Matthias Bruhn, based on the book of the same name by Hanna Schott; The Missing Star, by French director Loïc Malo, an opulent essay based on the last moments of Josif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili (better known as Stalin). Both films are co-produced by Czech MAUR film. When it comes to international funding from Eurimages – the only animated project that got support in 2018 was Even Mice Belong in Heaven, by Jan Bubeníček and Denisa Grimmová (Czech Republic/France/Poland/ Slovakia), which received € 370 000.

Short film Journey is about the worlds that each of us has within. These worlds consist of every age and experience, they are part of us, characterizing us and forming a part of our personality. The film is about a man who does not have such an inner world. He decides to fill his world by stealing pieces of “worlds” (personalities) from other people. However, the fragments thus obtained do not create a personality, but a conflict, which finally destroys him.

The dramatic journey of two siblings, Kyona and Adriel, who are on the run, as they are pursued by an unspecified Eastern European country. A story about the eternal human effort to find a new home and a better life. An effort for which we are willing to risk our lives. A nearly common shop with a nearly common corpulent saleswoman, Karla, stands at the end of the world. Out of standing in time, beyond genres and universes. Whoever needs anything to buy can simply arrive there. Stranger and stranger customers come to Karla and she always sells whatever every creature needs. But does a lone vendor even fulfil her greatest wish? This sensitive animated short film about the insensitive human world uses digital cartoon animation with a distinctly creative artistic concept.

Sergei Korolyov is considered one of the greatest technical geniuses of the 20th century. His discoveries in the field of rocket technology and spacecraft have greatly contributed to the formation of modern society as we know it today. As part of the Stalinist cleansing, he was sentenced to forced labour in Siberia after the betrayal of his co-worker, Valentin Glushko. Later he was taken from the gulag only to be put in another type of prison. In complete secrecy for the rest of his life, he led the Soviet space program at the Baikonur base. Repeated clashes between Glushko and Korolyov will later prove to be one of the key causes of Soviet failure in sending a piloted flight to the Moon.
