The film uses techniques of both live-action and animated film – the real experiences of the narrators are combined with animated sequences reconstructing painful situations, looking into the thoughts of three young people prematurely exposed to death. She lacked love and empathy from her father and now she is not able to share her feelings with him. She can’t get rid of the painful memories taking her back to when she brought home a little dead bird and her father didn’t support her. Sometimes it‘s too hard to open your feelings and share it with a close one. Sometimes it‘s too late. Let your painful memory fly away like a free little bird. THE KITE / POU·TùT DRAKA Martin Smatana / Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland 2019 / 13 min Producer: Peter Badač Production Company: BFilm.cz (CZ) in co-production with BFilm (SK), FAMU (CZ), CeTA (PL) The Kite deals with the issue of death, but it does so in a simple metaphorical and symbolic way using the relationship between the little boy and his grandpa. It explains that none of us are here forever and that all living creatures must die, but also shows that death doesn’t mean the end of our journey. After an unfortunate accident, two mortal enemies – a little Mouse and a Fox – meet in animal heaven. They lose their natural instincts and become best friends. Their wish to stay together after they return to earth comes true, but they are reborn into opposite roles. Thanks to the power of friendship they can overcome what seems to be impossible. A grandfather who is a feminist, an adopted young boy who astounds with his intellect, and Freshta, who will do anything to run away from her abusive husband. Like the other women in the family, Herra wears a burka and hides in a closet when guests arrive. She soon starts a new job with an American woman, Heidi, who has little understanding of the way women live in Afghanistan, and even less that not everybody wants to be saved by Westerners. Our aim is to lay the foundations of a functioning animation industry that will be part of the Czech economy.
ANIFILM www.anifilm.cz Kamila Dohnalová / Industry Program Coordinator kamila.dohnalova@anifilm.cz ANIFILM is an International Festival of Animated Films held annually in Třeboň, Czech Republic. The 19th edition will take place at the beginning of May 2020. The call for entries opens on 1 September 2019 and the application deadline is 10 January 2020. The festival showcases the best films from the entire spectrum of animation in several international competition sections. The industry programme offers a wide range of masterclasses, seminars, workshops and lectures. ANIMARKET that takes place during the festival is an industry networking event of job opportunities for animation professionals and students.

extreme, powerful, breathtaking flatulence. Flatulence so strong that the expulsion of gas from Ronald’s anus literally makes him take flight, like a high-octane jet pack. A local bully, seeing and hearing what happens to Ronald for the first time, mockingly dubs him ‘Fartron!’ That rude nickname will prove to be the defining identity of a superhero like no superhero seen, heard… or smelled, ever before.

However, in the elephant world, size and power matter, he therefore struggles to be appreciated by the other, larger animals. Despite this setback, Frederick doesn’t allow them to make him feel small; his wit, determination and boundless enthusiasm make him the largest personality in the jungle.

Stranger and stranger customers come to Karla and she always sells whatever every creature needs. But does a lone vendor even fulfil her greatest wish? This sensitive animated short film about the insensitive human world uses digital cartoon animation with a distinctly creative artistic concept.

They are left alone and nobody wants them except for their cat that magically transforms in a loving aunt. In another part of the town, two boys find an overgrown garden with piles of old apple cores. Only an old Indian lady down the street knows the truth about the two monsters that used to live here. In the old city centre, a man collects useless broken things. One day he repairs an old magical book that can bring the reader back to the past. Finally, isn‘t that old man sitting alone in the park, Bogdan, the first man who knew how to fly? He visited distant continents with herds of birds, but no one remembers him anymore. Except maybe for his little neighbour, who would sure like to learn to fly, too.

PEARL AMONG THE WORLDS / PERLA Martin Kotík / Czech Republic / 90 min / IN DEVELOPMENT Producer: Martin Kotík Production Company: Rolling Pictures (CZ) In a water-sprite town on the bottom of the Vltava River, far away from the “dangerous” humans, lives Pearl. She‘s a teenage water-sprite royalty, having abilities that other children don’t, and thus believes that according to an old legend, she’s the chosen ONE to protect the underwater world. To develop her abilities enough, she goes ashore to the human world where she meets Oliver and finds out that humans aren’t their greatest threat. These two become friends and later, Oliver also discovers his own abilities. They train together and prepare for the upcoming battle – the old legend begins to fulfill. Water is rising, world is vanishing and both worlds are in danger, and the only thing standing between humans, water sprites and disaster is a couple of teenagers. Can they ever succeed?
