Students at Cypress College experience various challenges affecting their academic success. They often suffer from food insecurity, unexpected unemployment, child care and elder care hardships, homelessness, mental health issues, and many other barriers to their success. Sometimes students simply need funds to purchase a book or even diapers. Oftentimes our most successful students need a little help just to stay in school and remove the everyday stressors that prevent them from continuing their college journey.
A gift to serve the Foundation’s Greatest Needs is the most impactful way to provide flexibility when funding programs to support student’s everyday necessities. Funds often offer Emergency Assistance in the form of grants or loans and fill the gap for student scholarships helping students who might not otherwise receive an award.
Your gift will ensure that students will receive scholarship awards in perpetuity, recognizing your commitment to the college beyond your lifetime.
Your Legacy Society Endowment will grow through the Foundation investment portfolio with earnings used to support students through scholarships or any other pre-determined programmatic purpose. You can add to the endowment each year, further growing its impact on students. When you provide scholarships for students, they not only receive the monetary support, but also are further encouraged through the knowledge that someone believes in them and their success. Donors and scholarship recipients both also benefit from the Scholarship Awards Ceremony. You and your student recipient will both be recognized and have the opportunity to meet and discuss the impact of the scholarship.
SINCE OPENING IN 1966 CYPRESS COLLEGE HAS BEEN
Cypress College – the beautiful, thriving campus that you see today – has modest beginnings in 1966. On September 12, most of the initial student body of 1,200 stood around the flagpole with a barely dry concrete footing for the first flag raising, complete with a Marine color guard and several dignitaries present.
The new community college campus was dubbed the “Instant Campus” by Newsweek Magazine because of the mere 74 days that intervened between the digging of the first shovelful of dirt and the beginning of classes. Indeed, the main electrical transformer for the classrooms was turned on just hours before the first class sessions began. The buildings were all temporary modular constructions, though some of these “temporary” buildings continued in service for over 40 years!
The first students to apply at Cypress College were indeed an intrepid, pioneering group, for when they applied, there was no campus, only a few apartments and houses converted to administrative offices, and a place to register students. But register they did, and the college’s first semester started on schedule with students taking classes with a bare-bones curriculum. After the first year, 25 transfers to the college became its first graduates.
Cypress College has since grown into the beautiful 112-acre campus that it is today, one of the most attractive campuses in the state and nation. It was ranked the #1 community college in California by Niche.com, a wellrespected school search platform, in both 2018 and 2020. For two years in a row in 2021 and 2022, Cypress College has been named an Equity Champion of Higher Education for Latinx Students. Cypress College was also honored as a 2023 Aspen Prize Top 150 U.S. Community College.
Today, approximately 16,000 students attend Cypress College each semester, taking courses that range from advanced calculus to computer science, nursing, air conditioning and refrigeration, and geographic information systems. The college now offers 174 career-training programs, associate degrees in 98 areas of study, and 56 transfer degrees. Since 2017, Cypress College has also offered a Bachelor of Science in Funeral Service on campus, one of only 15 bachelor’s degree programs in any field offered at a California community college.
Cypress College students have gone on to succeed at four-year institutions across the nation, where Cypress College transfers consistently do as well, or better, academically as their peers who began their education at the four-year school.
The college’s Career Technical Education programs are also premier, with several ranked among the best in the nation. The preponderance of respondents to a 2016 survey of 2,438 former students reported improved employment success as a result of their education at the college. They noted a 53.5 percent increase in their hourly wages after completing their coursework and 90 percent of them voiced satisfaction with their Cypress College experience.
At Cypress College we invest in the success of our students. Buen Cypress! We Take This Journey Together.
A letter sent 45 years ago to Cypress College from then-president Gerald Ford encouraging organizations to pay tribute to the upcoming 1976 Bicentennial was the impetus for what has become the college’s signature event as well as an Orange County tradition. Based on this letter, Marion “Stoney” Stoneking, then community services director, along with associates Kaleta Brown, theater instructor, and Don Cantrell, public information officer, conceived of a “Community and Americana Awards night,” the purpose of which would be to recognize people, “the sum and substance of America.”
Stoney met with the mayors of each of the college’s seven (now eight) service cities and asked each to identify someone who had made “contributions of service” to their city. The people the mayors selected became the Citizens of the Year. (Today, each of the eight cities has a designated committee that selects an honoree from nominations received from the entire community.)
For the first nine years, seven well-known people in various categories (entertainment, business, sports, the arts, the media, etc.) were given the Americana Award. One of these seven honorees also provided the evening’s entertainment. These honorees included Ray Bolger, Edgar Bergen and Ella Mae Morse. Other known honorees with a more local connection were: Marion Knott, Mickey Mouse, Carl Karcher, Buddy Ebsen, Dr. Sammy Lee, Cypress alumna Geri Jewell, Florence Arnold, and the Sons of the Pioneers. Since 1985 a Man and/or Woman of the Year has been chosen from numerous nominations. Among those honored have been: Tommy Lasorda, Irv Pickler, Frank Garcia, Bill Medley, Bruno Serato, and Trevor Hoffman, Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
From 1976-1984, the event was held on campus. The first Americana evening started with a dinner prepared by the faculty and students in the Culinary Arts program. The dinner was held in the Band Room although in subsequent years it moved to the Culinary Arts Dining Room, which is now the Art Gallery.
Following dinner, the awards ceremony and entertainment were scheduled. Since the theater had not yet been completed, the show that first night, with Ray Bolger performing, was held in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. A year later, the program moved to the theater and was held there every year until it was moved off campus. The event was well received by the community, and the theater was generally full. The awards were given out by Stoney and the college president. At one point, the mayors asked if they could give out the awards, but Stoney said no because he didn’t want the event to become political.
The expenses for the program were paid by the community service tax that colleges were allowed to collect at the time. However, when Prop. 13 was passed, that money was no longer available, which is why Jack Scott, then president, saw the opportunity to raise funds, and the current format was established. The event was moved off campus and has been at the Disneyland Resort since 1986.
In 2005, as the 30th anniversary of the Americana Awards was being celebrated, an Emeritus program was implemented, as over 200 past honorees were recognized and presented with bronze medallions attached to red, white and blue ribbons. Since then, each year’s honorees receive their own medallions.
The on-campus event drew more than 600 attendees to the campus theater. The 200 who attended the dinner prior to the awards and entertainment paid $10 for a dinner of beef stroganoff served over noodles. Of course, today’s event brings 600 together for slightly more than $10 for a four-course dinner in a spectacular setting, the proceeds of which support the work of the Cypress College Foundation. Each year the Foundation provides student scholarships, student emergency assistance, student book loans, and faculty grants among other programs.
Stoney had seen a video of Frank Sinatra singing “The House I Live In (That’s America to Me)”, and he thought the ideas expressed in the lyrics fit the theme of Americana perfectly, so each year he ended the program by reading the lyrics of that song.
He particularly emphasized the last two lines—“But especially the people/That’s America to me”—because in his mind, that’s what Americana was all about: the importance of people doing their best, serving their communities, and sharing their talents with others.
For 48 years, since that first Americana in 1976, Cypress College has continued to recognize outstanding community volunteers. We sincerely thank you for helping us celebrate these citizens and for assisting us in raising millions of dollars in support of the College.
In spring 2019, Cypress College selected its first cohort of Presidential Scholars of Distinction, a scholarship intended to recognize nine students — one from each college pathway — who exemplify what it means to be a Cypress College student. We’re pleased to introduce our 2022 cohort of Presidential Scholars of Distinction!
Welcome to Americana – This is an important community event that we have celebrated for 48 years. Thank you for joining us to honor our Citizens of the Year and Person of the Year. We are also proud to showcase our incredible students. They pursue their education with unwavering strength and persistence against tremendous odds.
Over the past several years, our Cypress students have endured job loss, medical issues, and the difficulties of caring for their children and other loved ones. However, they did not allow the Pandemic to crush their resolve and now, despite these challenges, our students are succeeding because of their fortitude and the Cypress College family of employees, community supporters, and you – our donors.
The Cypress College Foundation, led by your support, plays a pivotal role in the success of our students. As we celebrate our honorees and enjoy our meal in person during Americana Awards, please help our students through your continued generosity and commitment.
Enjoy and thank you!
Howard Kummerman Executive Director,We are pleased you are joining us tonight to honor our Citizens and Person of the Year. We hope you know how grateful we are for allowing us to share in the life of your communities through the power of higher education.
The Americana Awards is in its 48th year and even though we are approaching our 50th year, it still looks good in a little black dress and a tuxedo. This unique and special event allows the College to acknowledge and give back to the communities we serve and, in turn, raise money for scholarships for our most deserving students. Cypress College is your community college, and the impact we make together cannot be understated. Thank you for being with us on this special night.
The scholarships provided through your generosity help our students realize their dreams, allow them to strive for a better future and, for some, may even be the lifeline required to help them continue their education. And so, we thank you on behalf of our students, our faculty, and our staff. Your generosity truly makes a difference.
It is my privilege to recognize the inspiring contributions made by all of our honorees this evening. We all want to know that our lives have been meaningful, and this group of individuals are the quiet heroes among us. Through their own generosity, ingenuity, and hard work, each has given of themselves in ways that will impact our communities, our cities, and our county for years to come. It is an honor to celebrate and acknowledge their contributions as we gather together for tonight’s Americana Awards.
We appreciate the support of so many individuals: our generous donors, our Foundation Board, our elected officials, and our local businesses who support the work of the College year after year. We are particularly grateful to Union Bank for its continued commitment as our Title Sponsor and for Total Environmental Management (TEM) as our Presenting Sponsor, and for the ongoing support they provide the college. At Cypress, We Take This Journey Together, and together, we transform lives.
With heartfelt gratitude,
JoAnna Schilling, Ph.D. President, Cypress CollegeLiz Dunster lights up a room when she enters. Described by friends as “a people-lover,” Liz exudes energy and enthusiasm as she greets both friends and strangers with hugs and a warm smile. What becomes apparent later is her persistence, strength of character, and generosity. Seeing her now as the owner of Erika Records, a very successful vinyl record pressing plant in Buena Park, as well as a happy wife, mother of three, and grandmother of six, people might assume that life has been fairly easy for Liz, but that is not the case.
She was born in Budapest, Hungary; but she, her father, and mother, who was pregnant with her brother, Joe, at the time, were forced to flee to Austria during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. Both her father and her uncle were wanted by the Soviets. From Austria, the family immigrated to Canada, where they had to acclimate to a new language, culture, and surroundings. Her rebellious spirit was already a part of her then, exemplified by sneaking out of Catholic school in the first grade to watch the movie Pinocchio and leaving her home undetected to go to the neighborhood liquor store where she could watch color television.
A few years later she and her family moved to Southern California. As a teenager she participated in sports like track, and she entered local beauty pageants. She became first runnerup in one of the pageants, having lost the crown because, “the hemline of [her] skirt was shorter than what was deemed acceptable at the time.” Liz, even at the cost of the crown, was not going to compromise who she was and be told what to do and how.
Liz met her husband, Chuck, as a teenager, when she went to the local market with her parents and saw him working there. She told her parents, “He is the man I’m going to marry.” Two decades later in 1989 she and Chuck were married in Lake Tahoe and have been together ever since.
The best example of her persistence and rebellious spirit can be seen in her professional life, as the first woman to own a vinyl record pressing plant in the United States. When she decided to start her own business in 1981, she was dismissed as just another dumb blonde. She heard one man say this about her during a meeting with a major record label, so she turned around and told him that she was “a bottle blonde” and it wouldn’t be the last time they heard about her. Forty-two years later she is enjoying the last laugh as Erika Records and the entire record industry are thriving.
Success did not come easily, however. She sold records out of the trunk of her car at swap meets and at music venues like the Troubadour, to grow her business. And within two years she saved enough to buy a machine shop in Signal Hill, where she could make the records herself. Word spread about the quality of her work, and the business expanded, moving to ever-larger facilities until she ended up in Buena Park with a plant large enough to hold 43 record presses. The operation has been and continues to be a family affair. The company is her daughter Erika’s namesake; her son, Janos, is in charge of operations; husband Chuck contributes as general manager, and her brother, Joe, helped by lending his time and effort as an expeditor.
It would be easy to assume that having to work so hard to establish and maintain her business, while wearing multiple hats as wife and mother, Liz would have been too busy to participate in her community; but that is definitely not the case. While contributing in a variety of ways, Liz has focused her efforts on helping children, in particular the Boys & Girls Club of Buena Park and Caterina’s Club, a nonprofit that provides “access to nutritional food, stable housing, and job training for youth.”
When asked why she is involved with the community, Liz describes one of her first visits to the Boys & Girls Club. “The children were asked what they wanted for Christmas. One boy in particular said that all he wanted was a warm coat. Something as simple as a warm coat, a necessity that you and I have probably taken for granted, is all he wanted. I did my best to fight back tears, but I knew right then that I would do my best to help the underserved youth of our community.” Needless to say, the little boy got his coat as did others in the group.
She plans to continue to donate to the Boys & Girls Club, allowing them to expand their programs. She says, “I believe it’s important for young children to have access to the best possible education in and out of school. And the Boys & Girls Club is a great way to positively impact the local youth.”
Liz serves on the board of both the Boys & Girls Club and Caterina’s Club, and her outstanding service to these two organizations was recognized in 2022. She was an Anaheim White House Tree Lighting Honoree for Philanthropic Excellence, and she received the Boys & Girls Club of Buena Park Rehnborg Award, which is presented to the Volunteer of the Year. She credits her husband for his unwavering support of her altruistic endeavors. He is always there to offer advice and remind her of her purpose when challenges present themselves.
As further proof of her generous spirit, if she came into the funds, she would like to expand her philanthropic pursuits by purchasing 100 acres of land to house and provide needed services to veterans and the elderly—The Forgotten Ones, as she calls them. The space would also contain an animal rescue facility because she believes that the veterans and animals could help each other. Finally, to underscore her commitment to children, she would fund a college scholarship program for youth in underserved communities.
She wants to continue being a voice for the voiceless, those in our communities who are struggling but who are often overlooked. Clearly, Liz is a person who does not back down from a challenge. As she says, “I will do whatever it takes to help those in need.”
Kay Carpenter says two people inspired her to focus on doing for others: her grandmother and her co-worker at Con Agra Foods, Bernice Hird.
As a girl growing up in Jamestown, North Dakota, the oldest child with four siblings, Kay often visited her grandmother in a nearby town of only 200 people. Living in a home with no running water and a coal stove, no husband and seven children to take care of, her grandmother struggled to make ends meet, taking in laundry to earn money; but she would always share what little she had with others, both her fellow townspeople and the itinerant workers who often found their way to her door.
Kay saw how everyone in town knew her grandmother and how generous and kind she was, and the young girl intuitively understood the importance of helping others. Kay finished high school in Jamestown and went on to earn a degree in journalism at the University of North Dakota. She then moved to California and took her “dream job” as Assistant Director of Public Relations at Knott’s Berry Farm, where she often interacted with the Knott family, particularly Walter Knott.
In 1971 she went to work as Editor, Communications Manager at Hunt-Wesson Foods (now ConAgra). Bernice Hird, the company’s Community Relations Manager, became her mentor and introduced Kay to all the many charitable organizations Bernice supported in Orange County. Working with Bernice really cemented Kay’s life-long passion for volunteering.
While she was raising her two sons, David and Eric, she became involved in many of their activities, serving as PTA president at John Marshall School, helping initiate an anti-littering and recycling program, and assisting in the classroom. She was a little league team mom and an active band mom at Brookhurst Junior High and Anaheim High School.
Over the years Kay volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank, served as chair of the board for Pilgrimage Family Therapy (counseling for underserved families in crisis), was a communication consultant for the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, joined Anaheim First (part of the city’s Neighborhood Investment Program) as a governing board member, and is one of the founders of the Orange County Philanthropy Day first commemoration event.
While she has enjoyed all her volunteer work, probably her two favorite organizations are the Orange County Human Relations Council--where she has served on the advisory board for 25 years, helping to plan their annual gala among other activities, and serving as chair of the advisory group in 2004--and the Anaheim Family YMCA. Her leadership at the Y includes serving more than 27 years on the Board, including becoming its first female chair in 20002001 and having a second stint in 2020-21. She has been on nearly every committee at the Y,
including chairing the Marketing Committee and the Good Friday Breakfast. You know she has a passionate commitment to the Y because when asked what she would do if she won the lottery, she says without hesitation, “I would first donate money to build a new facility for the Anaheim Family YMCA!”
After 30 years at ConAgra, Kay retired as Director of Corporate Communications and Community Relations, but she stayed connected with some of her fellow retirees. For 12 years she and a group of eight other retirees volunteered weekly at the Southwest Community Center in Santa Ana, a non-profit that helps the homeless and underserved in the area. Kay’s small group prepared school backpacks, Christmas gifts, and whatever else was needed to help the Center fulfill its mission.
Kay has what she describes as “a very eclectic love of music,” having been to more concerts than she can count. Her sons benefited from her love of music. Eric was an original member of “No Doubt,” along with Gwen Stefani, a Cypress College alum. He now works with OCTA. Her son David is a professional bass player, and Kay has been fortunate to travel several places internationally to see some of his performances, including twice at Royal Albert Hall in London. She also is very proud of her three grandchildren—Davis, Giuliana, and Evan—who love music and are all very generous about helping others.
In addition to music, she loves sports, especially baseball. Her favorite team? The Angels, of course!
Kay is determined to “make a difference in the well-being of [her] city, particularly the underserved and to inspire others to do the same.” Her grandmother would be proud!
Carol McCann spent her early years on her paternal grandparents’ cattle ranch in Arizona. While there, she learned how to milk cows, slop hogs, and retrieve chicken eggs, but more significantly she was inspired by her grandparents’ focus on God, family, and caring for their community, such as donating milk and eggs to families on the nearby Native Lands. As a result, she has lived a life of service to others, both in her professional endeavors and in her community.
She is a proud Cypress College alum, having earned her associate’s degree in Registered Nursing at the college in 1981. She met her husband, Jim, while they were both enrolled at the college. They were fortunate enough to take biology classes from now-retired faculty member Robert Vandergrift, who took a special interest in the young couple. He rented a condo to them; and in 1980, when they were ready to buy a house, he wrote a letter of recommendation that helped them buy the Buena Park home in which they raised their sons and where they still live.
Carol quickly put her skills to use, becoming a critical care nurse at the St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton. During the 20 years she worked there she gradually moved into management positions, utilizing the knowledge she gained from earning a bachelor’s degree in business/ organizational development.
After St. Jude’s she worked for Tenet Healthcare, Hirsch & Associates, and MemorialCare at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills and San Clemente, each time increasing her range of responsibilities. While continuing to work full-time and raise her family, in 2001 she pursued her master’s degree in business administration at the University of Redlands. In spite of her significant professional responsibilities, she never forgot her grandparents’ emphasis on helping others. With two young sons and a family love of sports, it was natural for Carol and Jim to become very active in youth sports activities. They were team parents and baseball coaches, in addition to Carol serving as president of the Buena Park American Little League while Jim was chief umpire.
Along with work and volunteer activities with her sons, Carol has been an active member of her church. For several years she served as the 1st Christian Church of Huntington Beach Resource Center volunteer administrator, overseeing daily operations providing food, financial, and local resource referrals to those in need.
In 2015, when Carol retired, her volunteer work expanded exponentially. She has served on the Buena Park Police Chief Community Advisory Board and the Buena Park Homeless Committee. Her interest in the homeless led her to actively contribute to the Buena Park’s Bright Paths program, participating in weekly street outreach activities to connect those in need with services available in the community. Carol also regularly volunteers for the Orange County Point-in-Time
homeless census count, and from 2020 to the present she has chaired the Homeless Navigation Center Oversight Commission.
Currently she is heavily involved with the Buena Park Collaborative (BPC), a nonprofit described as “an energetic group of individuals, businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations who are working collectively to make Buena Park a safer and healthier place.” The group started with a focus on Pre-K through grade 12 education, emphasizing college and career. Over time, BPC has worked collaboratively with the city on housing, safe streets, health (becoming a “Fit City”), and an increase in the number of parks, the goal being a park within a 10-minute walk of all residents. Carol served as BPC Executive Director from 2017-2019 and has been on the Steering Council from 2017 to the present. She was also the Collaborative’s Community Resource Center administrator from 2019-2022.
Not surprisingly, Carol has been recognized as an outstanding volunteer and leader. She was named a California State Senate Woman of Achievement for the 32nd District and a California Domestic Violence Advocate, as well as having received a Kindness Award from the Orange County Supervisorial District 4.
Carol’s entire family focuses on compassion for others. This is exemplified by being actively involved in their church family, plus she, Jim and their sons’ families serve others through education, youth coaching, mentoring, volunteering, rescuing animals, and fostering children. As to the future, Carol looks to the past and what she learned from her grandparents. She plans “to continue to learn and apply that knowledge to better serve God, my family, and the community.”
Sandie McCarthy has a radiant smile. It is almost as if she is lit from within, and perhaps she is, given her strong faith and her desire to make the world a more peaceful and loving place.
Sandie has many roles, including wife, mother, community volunteer, and philanthropist, but in her vision of herself, she is primarily an educator. This role started when she was a very young child and played school with her maternal grandmother, who was once a teacher in a oneroom schoolhouse. At first, “Grandma” was the teacher, but soon Sandie was the one reading and teaching the “lesson.” It was only natural that she would earn a bachelor’s degree in education (at Central Michigan University), with postgraduate studies toward a master’s degree at Wayne State University.
Her first teaching job was from 1966-69 at the Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan, where her husband, Terry, was an officer at the Naval Dental Clinic; but once she and Terry learned that their son Trevor was profoundly deaf, Sandie shifted her attention to her son and his lifelong education, which continues to this day. She enrolled in a correspondence course offered by the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles to learn how best to teach Trevor.
When Terry was reassigned to the Navy Base in Long Beach, Sandie enrolled Trevor in the John Tracy Demonstration Nursery School, where she volunteered as a parent teacher and did fundraising for the next three years. At Trevor’s next school, the Oralingua School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Sandie again volunteered as a teacher assistant and served on the school’s board of directors for six years.
Her interest in helping deaf children led her to be part of the panel that wrote the State of California guidelines to implement the Federal “Handicapped Children Act of 1975,” now known as the “Disabilities Education Act.” These were the first guidelines that mandated mainstreaming of deaf children in their local schools.
Sandie was active in the Harbor Dental Society Auxiliary and the Long Beach Day Nursery School, holding leadership roles in both organizations. In 1984 she joined the Assistance League of Long Beach, where she continues to be an active member. In addition to being president, she has held a variety of other leadership positions.
In 1986 she was asked to join the board of directors of the Cypress College Foundation, the first woman named to the board. She spent six years as its secretary. Thirty-seven years later, Sandie is the longest-serving board member and remains an active participant in all aspects of the foundation. Over the years she has served on various committees; she was president from 2012 to 2014; she chaired Americana in both 2004 and 2006; and she helped establish the
President’s Circle. In 2017, she founded and continues to chair the Legacy Society, an arm of the foundation that obtains endowed gifts to provide financial security to the foundation for years to come. Thanks to Sandie’s leadership, the Legacy Society now has over 50 members.
Sandie describes herself as having “been on a faith-filled journey all my life.” Over the years she has been active at both St. Hedwig and St. Irenaeus Catholic churches, and in 2018 she began participating in the Orange County Catholic Cursillo Movement, a program that holds weekend retreats that help people grow deeper in faith. Drawing on her life-long desire to teach, Sandie now regularly gives presentations at these programs. She was recently a “rectora” (leader) of one of these weekends, which she calls “life-changing.”
Sandie’s teaching takes another form as well. For the past 20 years she has written and distributed a short daily inspiration to more than 150 people worldwide.
Terry and Sandie met at a “teen canteen” in the late 1950’s. They married right after college— which Sandie completed in three years. She says, “We’ve been dancing through life together ever since and are still sweethearts after all these years.”
They have three adult children: Brendan, Bronwyn and the aforementioned Trevor. Brendan, a software engineer, is married and lives with his family in San Francisco, while Bronwyn and her family have their home in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she is a doctor of veterinary medicine. Family memories include climbing Mt. Fuji in Japan and riding in a hot air balloon over the Serengeti Plains.
Sandie sees her “life’s work as being to educate myself and those I meet along the way. Together we are journeying toward fulfillment.” If you happen to meet Sandie on this path, you’ll recognize her by her smile.
Janice and David Skelton are truly a couple in sync. They worked at the same company, Garden Grove Glass; they both enjoy traveling in their motor home; they are committed to supporting their community in whatever way they can; they have even been known to color-coordinate what they wear!
David joined the Garden Grove Elks Lodge in 1971 and has been instrumental in many projects since that time. He helped to start the Bingo program, which has become a significant fundraiser for the lodge. At the annual Strawberry Festival he helps set up the Elks and Emblem Club booths, and since he loves to cook, he is in charge of the volunteer breakfast and cooks at the Labor Day celebration and other events.
One of his favorite activities is the lodge’s Christmas Basket Program. He contacts local schools for names of approximately 200 families in need. He then collects the donated food, mostly from canned food drives at schools, and arranges for the sorting, packing, and delivery of over 500 boxes prior to Christmas Day.
David became an officer in the lodge in the early 1980’s and went on to become “Exalted Ruler” (president) and then “District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler.” He continues to be a strong leader in the Elks organization. For his service, he was named Elk of the Year in 2019.
He has also been active in the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce, providing outstanding support to the Miss Garden Grove Pageant. He was one of the recipients of the Chamber’s Women’s Division Silver Spoon awards, in recognition of his major contributions to the community. The chamber selected David as the 2022-2023 Man of the Year, honoring him for his many years of service to Garden Grove.
Janice began volunteering when her three children were young, starting with the PTA and Bolsa Little League. She moved on from there to be a member of the Garden Grove Emblem Club, which started as an organization for the wives and immediate family of Elks lodge members but is now open to anyone who is interested in serving their community through projects such as drug awareness, literacy, and college scholarships.
The Garden Grove Emblem Club collects and wraps toys to be given as Christmas gifts to children in the community and prepares Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. The club also participates in the Kids Read program, donating money for the purchase of books. Janice joined the Emblem Club 43 years ago and has been very active in it since then. In 2021-2022 she served as president, having served as vice president the year before. During her term as president the club raised over $34,000 to donate to local non-profits.
She is also very involved with the Women’s Division of the Garden Grove Chamber, always helping with their events and fundraisers. She has been the group’s secretary for a number of years and also served as vice president.
Like David, Janice has helped with the Strawberry Festival, including being the associate director for several years.
She, too, has been recognized for her many contributions to Garden Grove. She was honored with the Silver Spoon Award of the Chamber’s Women’s Division; the Garden Grove Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award; and the Emblem Club’s Mary Keller Award.
At home Janice is known for her many collections, in particular Snow White memorabilia. She has so many Christmas ornaments that each year she and David set up and decorate seven trees, each with a different theme according to the ornaments selected. David also enjoys putting up an outdoor Christmas display in their front yard.
Their family consists of three adult children, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Holidays are celebrated with large dinners that include as many family members as possible. There are Easter egg hunts, games, and special food traditions, including strawberry waffles at Christmas.
In David’s spare time, of which there is very little, he enjoys golf and bowling. He is justifiably proud of having bowled three perfect games over the years.
When asked why they are so involved in the community, David talks about his love for Janice and that being married to her is the greatest honor of his life. It is almost as if serving the community is an extension of their love, inspiring them to help others. Janice puts it very simply—“We both enjoy volunteering and helping people”—so that’s what they do, much to the benefit of Garden Grove.
From snow days in Illinois to beach days, Mike Belknap experienced major changes when his family and he, at age 10, moved to California, but he loved the beach and being outdoors all the time. He quickly settled into a Southern California lifestyle and later a career that was at least partly shaped by the weather—community services/recreation. He went on to graduate from Savanna High School in Anaheim and then Cal-State Fullerton with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration.
His first job, while in college, was as a day camp counselor for the City of Anaheim, and he says, “I loved it.” It ultimately led him to the Recreation Department in La Palma for a part-time but year-round job as a recreation leader, which turned into a 37-year career. “Looking back and upon reflection, it’s incomprehensible that a college part-time job led to a career that means so much to me and one I’m very proud of.”
But an experience during his younger days may have had an influence on his career path. He participated in the Fullerton Boys & Girls Club. “From a young age, I saw that having access to recreational opportunities was important for so many of the members and having mentors to guide us through adolescence. Some of my best memories are from that time, and I think that’s what pushed me, although not consciously, toward my career path.”
He moved through the ranks of the Recreation Department and in 2011 became the Recreation and Community Services Director. In 2013 his responsibilities were increased, and he became the Community Services Director overseeing the recreation, maintenance and public works divisions.
During his long tenure in La Palma, Mike is credited with starting a number of recreation programs, including Club La Palma Day Camp, Fit N Fun Afterschool Program, and Pee Wee Sports. All city events come under his domain, with one of the most recent being the Festival of Nations and Hometown Parade. Mike actually loves events, especially those that honor other individuals, so at first he felt a little awkward being the Americana Citizen of the Year. “I’m used to putting on events to honor others, not the other way around!”
Mike is described as a leader and well-respected member of the community, providing support and oversight to numerous volunteer committees. His open-door policy gives everyone accessibility, making him a logical person to serve as a mentor to many past and present staff members. Over the years he has generously given advice and support to colleagues and community members, especially young people—perhaps remembering the importance in his life of mentors in the Fullerton Boys & Girls Club.
While working extensively with volunteers as part of his job, he has also volunteered himself. In his professional capacity he served as president of the California Parks and Recreation Society, District 10. He was also a La Palma/Buena Park American Cancer Society volunteer and subcommittee chair, and helped with the La Palma Relay for Life.
He has also received several awards: a Special Recognition Award and Coveted Leadership Award from the California Parks and Recreation Society, District 10, and from the City of La Palma, Employee of the Year and Recreation Employee of the Year (twice).
When not working, Mike enjoys cooking and baking, believing that entertaining and providing food to others is “my way to show people that I care about them.” While he says this in reference to his personal relationships, by extension the events that he has put on for the citizens of La Palma are simply another aspect of this belief. Clearly he cares about them, too.
“I’m very proud of the lives I’ve impacted through the years. Seeing smiling faces and families together participating in programs and events that I’ve created or enhanced gives me a sense of accomplishment.”
Mike is retiring just a week after Americana. He and his husband are moving to Palm Springs, where he plans to relax for a few months before looking for organizations and activities to which he can contribute.
But he “will always consider La Palma home and the city will always have a special place in my heart.” Clearly there are many people in the city who feel the same way about Mike.
“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” Muhammad Ali is quoted as saying. One of Nesi Stewart’s favorite quotations, her life exemplifies this philosophy—although she does also find time for golf.
Nesi owns Printmasters in Los Alamitos, a business she and her now deceased husband, Carl, purchased in 2007. They had no experience in the printing industry, but they believed that they could continue to make this existing business a success because of Nesi’s interest in graphics and design and Carl’s experience with mechanics and equipment. Nesi’s adventurous spirit, always pushing her to explore something different, also prompted this decision.
Before purchasing this business, Nesi viewed the Los Alamitos Chamber of Commerce website and decided to join the chamber as soon as possible. “It was one of the best business decisions I made,” Nesi acknowledges. Soon Judy Klabouch, owner of Green Street Interiors in Los Alamitos as well as an active community volunteer and the Los Alamitos 1992 Americana Citizen of the Year, asked Nesi to join the chamber board of directors. As Nesi says, “Nobody says no to Judy.”
In 2020 Nesi became the president of the chamber board, thinking it was a one-year commitment, but because of the pandemic, her tenure was extended. She will step down as president in 2023. Later, Judy asked Nesi to join the board of directors of Casa Youth Shelter, an organization that helps youth in crisis. In addition to being a board member, Nesi began spending Christmas mornings at Casa, having breakfast and opening gifts with the youth in residence, what she describes as “a humbling experience.”
Nesi also uses her business to serve her community, for example, through the Printmasters art contest. Students at all levels were invited to create art expressing their feelings about their experiences during the pandemic. The company reached out to customers, associates, and others to collect donations for prizes and for the cost of printing a book of the art submittals. The books were sold, with the proceeds going to three nonprofits in Los Alamitos. During an exhibit of the art, several pieces were purchased, with half the proceeds going to the student artists and half to nonprofits. A local medical clinic selected several pieces to be hung on the clinic’s walls. The prize-winning students were recognized at a Los Alamitos City Council meeting. Nesi says, “One of my biggest thrills was seeing how excited the students were about the acknowledgements they received.”
A self-described woman of faith, Nesi is an active member of the Antioch Church of Long Beach. One of her church activities was to organize a small group of women church members to learn how to play golf while also strengthening their faith. The ladies took weekly lessons from the golf pro at Heartwell Golf Course, followed by an hour of Bible study based on Jim Sheard’s book
In His Grip, which provides a parallel between golf and Christianity. Nesi is “proud that many of the ladies are still playing (and praying) because of this experience.”
Nesi was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and lived there until her family moved to Lancaster, California, when she was 15. In Lake Charles her parents were involved in the local church, the school district, and the community. She and her three siblings stayed busy with many activities, including swimming, dance, piano, and Sunday school. The family lived in a segregated neighborhood, and she attended segregated schools until ninth grade when she was sent to an all-girls white Catholic school. She got a good academic education there, but she recalls, “More important was my exposure to discrimination and my ability to stand up for my beliefs and truths about who I was and what I believed in.”
Nesi credits her husband for much of her success, believing that she would not be where she is today if it were not for him. “Each day I’m reminded of something I learned from him that makes me a stronger and better person.”
Carl was also primarily responsible for choosing their puppy, Millie, which Nesi picked up just two weeks after Carl passed. “Millie is the joy of my life right now,” she says, adding that their morning walks “provide an ideal way to get a fresh start to each new day.”
Nesi has chosen to “pay her rent” in the city of Los Alamitos, making it a better place for everyone.
Kori and Daren DeLeon are the quintessential community volunteers, involved in a variety of events and organizations in Seal Beach while at the same time owning a local company and managing it on a daily basis (Kori) and working as a customer service manager for Southwest Airlines (Daren). And they have raised four children, the youngest being in his first year at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he is on the football team. Kori’s father had a career that caused the family to move quite often. At some point, however, Rossmoor became home and provided such a positive environment that, when the time came, she and Daren decided to raise their family in the same neighborhood.
Being honored by the Cypress College Foundation is not the first time that Kori has had a connection with the college. In the last semester of her senior year in high school, Kori arranged her schedule so that she was through with her classes by noon every day. While she envisioned spending her afternoons having fun, her mother had other ideas, so Kori took a class at Cypress College. She doesn’t remember the details of the class or who her instructor was, but she remembers it as a very positive experience.
Daren grew up in Hemet, where he lived until he graduated from high school. Then he moved to Long Beach and enrolled in Long Beach City College, where he and Kori met.
After several years, they married and began a family, knowing they wanted to be involved in their children’s school and extracurricular activities to the greatest extent possible. They also had the model of Kori’s parents, who were very active in their children’s lives. They took care of people, doing whatever they could for others. Kori and Daren have adopted this philosophy, volunteering because “it is simply what one should do.”
Once their children began attending Los Alamitos High School, Kori and Daren went into high gear as volunteers. Although they helped out in a variety of ways, one area of special focus was the nationally known choir. The couple took tickets and handed out programs at concerts, fed choir members after performances, organized the very successful Bingo fundraisers, made costumes, and even set up equipment backstage at choir competitions all over the country. They also helped with football. Daren coached at Los Alamitos, where he was also responsible for setting up an inflatable Griffin (the Los Alamitos High School mascot) before each game so that team members could run through it, an important tradition at the school. As they did with
students in the choir, Kori and Daren provided food for the players after their games. For their 20 years of service to Los Alamitos High School, the DeLeons were named Heroes of the Heart in 2021.
Kori and Daren have both also been very active in the Seal Beach community. As members of the Seal Beach Lions Club, they have helped with the Fish Fry, Pancake Breakfast, and Christmas Parade. They have also volunteered with the annual Run Seal Beach race.
For many years they have chaired the highly successful Seal Beach summer concert series, even during the pandemic when many other events were cancelled. Attendance at the 2022 concerts was at an all-time high.
They have both been on the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce board, which Kori served as president one year. For her service to the chamber she was named Volunteer of the Year and Business Person of the Year (Kori is the president of RTI Insurance Agency in Seal Beach). She also received the Lions International Citizen of Merit Award.
Their outstanding volunteer work led to the honor of being named Grand Marshals of the annual Seal Beach Christmas Parade in 2021. As Americana Citizens of the Year, they also appeared in the 2022 parade.
Daren has used his employment with Southwest Airlines to participate in the Honor Flight Network Southland, a national organization that transports American veterans to Washington, DC, to share in a day of honor at our nation’s memorials.
Seal Beach is proud to recognize Kori and Daren for their outstanding service to the community.
Brian Donahue began working at age 13, selling cold drinks at spring training baseball games in St. Petersburg, FL. That desire to work has stayed with him. Even now that he’s retired, he stays busy with volunteer activities in Stanton, as well as various hobbies and travel. He refuses to slow down, referring to the Toby Keith song “Don’t Let the Old Man In,” made famous in the Clint Eastwood film The Mule.
Brian lived in New York until he was 11. Then he moved with his mother and sister to Florida, graduated from high school, joined the Navy, where he was trained as an electrician, and eventually found his way to California. He majored in Industrial Arts at Pasadena City College, earning an associate’s degree, and then went on to San Diego State to earn a bachelor’s degree in the same field, followed by enrollment at Cal-Lutheran University to get a master’s degree in secondary education administration. He became what was known at the time as a “shop teacher,” teaching high school students electricity, electronics, and other skilled trades. Later he took on more administrative duties at various regional occupational centers in Southern California and served as consultant-in-charge at the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
Having moved to Stanton with his family, he applied for an opening as a member of the Stanton Parks & Recreation Commission, at the urging of a neighbor, Joanne Case. A few years later she was instrumental in getting him involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Stanton.
After six years with the Parks and Recreation Commission, Brian won a seat on the Stanton City Council where he served for 24 years, including five terms as mayor. During his time on the city council, Brian saw the need for a nonprofit organization that could raise funds to offer programs to the community, so he was instrumental in establishing the Stanton Community Foundation in 2010. Through his leadership he was able to enlist a variety of citizens to serve on the foundation board of directors.
The Stanton Community Foundation sponsors such programs as Threads for Kids (school hoodies donated to elementary schools), Shopping Carts for Seniors (carts donated to the local senior apartment complex), Supply Our Schools (local teachers apply for mini-grants to purchase classroom supplies), and a free senior exercise program. Brian was instrumental in starting all these programs.
He also worked with foundation board members and other community members to plan fundraising events, such as the Classic Car Show, Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, and the Charity Shootout.
Brian’s work with the Boys & Girls Club began in 2002. While attending the Boys & Girls Club Pacific Region Conference, he saw clearly how valuable these clubs are for our youth, and he was determined to do even more with the local Stanton Club. He has now served as president of the board of directors for eight years.
Brian’s leadership helped to ensure that the Stanton Boys & Girls Club stayed open during the summer of 2020 when all the other clubs in the area closed due to the pandemic. The club provided distance learning opportunities and teen mentors free for the entire summer, an invaluable service to the families in the community.
Since the Boys & Girls Club needs to raise funds, Brian, along with staff and other volunteers, plans four fundraisers each year: Harvest Dinner and Auction, Golf Marathon, Casino Night, and a fireworks stand.
In 2021, Brian decided it was time to retire from the Stanton Community Foundation board and the Stanton Lions Club, where he had been a member for more than 10 years. He and his wife, Hedy, wanted more time to travel and enjoy their family of four adult children and ten grandchildren.
His greatest sense of accomplishment comes from working on a project that has positive results. Certainly, the people of Stanton have benefited greatly from all the projects he has worked on over the years.
Closer to home, his wife says, “He can fix anything.”
From the first Americana Awards in 1976, Seal Beach was included with the neighboring areas of Los Alamitos and Rossmoor. In 2004, it was determined that residents of Seal Beach should be recognized separately. Since that time, there have been 17 Citizens of the Year from Seal Beach who were chosen by a committee of that city’s residents and honored at the Americana Awards

Mireya Alt
Psychology and Sociology, 2022
Mireya Alt is no stranger to hardship and challenges. She grew up in South Central LA and worked hard to overcome childhood trauma, left an abusive marriage, and, while rebuilding her life as a single mother of four and first-generation college student, experienced a period of homelessness during the early days of the pandemic. Yet Mireya never gave up on her goals.
She was selected as the 2022 Presidential Scholar of Distinction for the Social Sciences pathway and graduated with associate degrees in psychology, sociology, and liberal arts with an emphasis in social and behavioral sciences.
After graduating from high school, Wilfredo Carrasco studied fashion design at Saddleback College and moved to New York for seven years to work as a fashion designer.
After moving back to California, Wilfredo endured personal struggles that eventually inspired him to turn his life around and return to school. He initially chose Cypress College to pursue an Addiction Studies certificate with the goal of becoming a substance abuse counselor.
Wilfredo was the 2021 Presidential Scholar of Distinction for the Social Sciences pathway and graduated with a degree in Human Services.

She served in a number of roles in the intervening years, including as director of the pneumatics business unit and vice president of customer support operations. She also served as a board member on several joint ventures at the company.
In 2019, Peat was elected to the Cypress School District Board of Trustees and currently serves as the board’s president. She also joined the GFWC Woman’s Club of Cypress, where she was appointed president and worked with fellow members to donate $25,000 to the Cypress College Foundation and name the college’s new Veterans Resource Center outdoor patio in honor of the late Page Betar, a military veteran and GFWC Woman’s Club of Cypress member.
Through the years we have seen the passing of these friends, former “Men and Women of the Year” and “Citizens of the Year,” who devoted much of their lives to helping others.

In an important step to establish a lasting legacy for Cypress College students, the Foundation established the Legacy Society. Donors who commit to an endowment of $10,000 or more through a will, trust, annuity, insurance policy or outright cash, are inducted into the Legacy Society. The Foundation inducted 36 Charter Member families into the Legacy Society in 2017. Legacy Society donors include members of the community, Cypress College faculty, managers, staff, and retirees as well as Foundation Board members. Of particular interest is that five college presidents, JoAnna Schilling, current president, and four former presidents have all committed their support to Cypress College through the Legacy Society.
I’m a member of the Cypress College Legacy Society because I want to do all I can to ensure that future students will have the financial support they need to complete their degrees and certificates. By setting up an endowment through the Foundation, I know my gift will be used effectively to help students for many years to come. It’s my way of following Nelson Henderson’s quotation: “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
Margie LewisBob Simpson
Cypress College is a special place doing amazing things for students. Having been a member of the Charger family, I know the value of our mission in transforming the lives of our students. Being a Legacy donor provides the opportunity to support that mission now and into the future.
JoAnna Schilling
As President of Cypress College, it is my honor to contribute to, and support, the Legacy Society at Cypress College. When a donor gives to the Legacy Society they are making a life-changing difference in the lives of students who are beating the odds of economic, racial, and cultural barriers. While our students possess a resilience born of courage, grit, and enormous potential, the Legacy Society ensures they also have the financial support to achieve their dreams. I am proud to commit to an endowment that ensures the economic future of these amazing students, and the communities in which they live.

Having immigrated to the United States with my family, my parents ingrained in me the importance of education. They believed education was the “equalizer” in terms of achieving one’s goals. As a youngster I didn’t always understand that, but as I grew older I did and instilled the same in my children. There is no better return on investment for our country than investing in a student’s education---the Legacy Society does that! You can become part of that investment.
thanks Total Environmental Management for their tireless support to ensure our students reach their full potential
The City of Stanton is proud to be honoring our fellow community members at the 48th Annual Americana Awards. A special congratulations to Stanton’s 2023 Honoree:

An endowment gift may be designated for a specific purpose. Please let us know if you wish to restrict the use of income from your gift for a specific program or purpose. You may wish to make the endowment gift in your honor, or in memory of another person. We can help you make a gift that creates a legacy of remembrance for you and your loved ones.
For additional information on endowment giving or to review information about our endowment plan, please contact us. We look forward to helping you create your legacy!
YOUR LEGACY SOCIETY ENDOWMENT GIFT WILL GROW TO BECOME A PERMANENT LEGACY OF SUPPORT FOR OUR GOOD WORK!
An endowment gift is a gift to an established fund that is permanently invested.
When you make an endowment gift, you create a steady stream of annual income to support our good work.
Your gift will be maintained in perpetuity and make a lasting, meaningful difference.
There are several ways in which you can make an endowment gift either today or as part of your estate plan.
Did you know that by making a gift to our endowment, you can create a permanent source of income that will ensure the continuation of our programs far into the future? This type of meaningful gift can create a legacy for you while providing lasting support for our mission.
When you transfer your cash or appreciated property (stock, CDs or real estate) to our endowment, we will agree to pay you fixed-income for life at a rate based on your age. You may benefit from a charitable deduction and a portion of your income may even be tax free.
You can start an endowment with a single gift of cash paid today or over time. Your Legacy Society gift will grow over time, ensuring future success for Cypress College students.
A gift to our endowment made through your will or trust, may provide your estate with valuable tax savings. Your endowment bequest can be a gift of a specific asset, percentage of your estate or the residue (what's left after specific bequests are made to your family). Your endowment gift will create a permanent legacy of lasting support for our work!

When you know the secret of throwing one, a boomerang always comes back to you. In the same way, our organization has a secret you may not know. It's a charitable gift annuity.
When you fund a charitable gift annuity with us, you get cash back at high, fixed annual rates that never change.
When you fund a charitable gift annuity, we agree to send you a check each year for as long as you live, based on your funding amount and your age at the time of funding. The payment amount never changes. In addition, you may also receive:
●
An income tax deduction this year for part of the funding amount.
● After a lifetime of payments to you, any remaining funds automatically support our mission in your name.
If you fund it by transferring stock, some of your capital gains are eliminated, some spread over a number of years.
●
Call or email us to learn what your payment rate and tax benefits will be. When you do, ask about deferred charitable gift annuities and other options that may give you greater payments and tax benefits.
The names and images shown here are representative of typical donors and may or may not be actual donors to the organization. Under federal rules your benefits may be different from this example. Please contact us for your specific benefits.

The Cypress College Foundation is proud to once again announce the annual scholarship in tribute to all Americana Honorees. The Americana Awards Outstanding Community Leader Scholarship will be awarded to a Cypress College student who demonstrates extraordinary service to the community.
This $1,000 scholarship was awarded for the first time at the May 2021 Cypress College Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony.
If you would like to contribute to Americana Community Service Scholarship Fund, please make your online donation at Cypresscollegefoundation.org or mail your check to the Foundation Office.
Vivian Tieu was the first recipient of the Americana Awards Community Leader Scholarship in 2021. Vivian is a Cypress College Ambassador and pursuing a career as a Hospital Administrator. Congratulations Vivian for demonstrating outstanding leadership on campus and beyond!
9200 Valley View Street Cypress, CA 90630
The Americana Awards began in 1976 as part of our nation’s Bicentennial celebration. Its original purpose, which is still true today, was to recognize outstanding community volunteers—people doing their best, serving their communities, and sharing their talents with others. More than 400 exceptional honorees have been recognized for these very special awards.
“Citizens of the Year,” as honorees are called, are recommended by an Americana City Committee from each of Cypress College’s major “service cities”: Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, and Stanton. Members of the city committees are often former honorees as well as other community leaders from each city. The city committee recommendations are reviewed and approved by the Cypress College Foundation’s Americana Committee, which also selects a ”Person of the Year” for special recognition of outstanding service to the entire region.
Americana is the Foundation’s annual major fundraising event and has raised millions of dollars over its 48-year history. These funds support Cypress College students through scholarships, emergency assistance, and campus programs that promote student success.
