Focusing on Student Impact
Supporting students through scholarships, emergency assistance, and funding of Cypress College programs.
Maximizing impact through a gift funding the Greatest Need
Students at Cypress College experience various challenges affecting their academic success. They often suffer from food insecurity, unexpected unemployment, child care and elder care hardships, homelessness, mental health issues, and many other barriers to their success. Sometimes students simply need funds to purchase a book or even diapers. Oftentimes our most successful students need a little help just to stay in school and remove the everyday stressors that prevent them from continuing their college journey.
A gift to the Foundation’s Greatest Need Program is the most impactful way to provide flexibility when supporting students’ everyday necessities. Funds often offer Emergency Assistance in the form of grants or loans and fill the gap for student scholarships helping students who might not otherwise receive an award.
Making a lifetime impact through a Cypress College Foundation Legacy Society Endowment
Your gift will ensure that students will receive scholarship awards in perpetuity, recognizing your commitment to the college beyond your lifetime.
Your Legacy Society Endowment will grow through the Foundation investment portfolio with earnings used to support students through scholarships or any other pre-determined programmatic purpose. You can add to the endowment each year, further growing its impact on students. When you provide scholarships for students, they not only receive the monetary support, but also are further encouraged through the knowledge that someone believes in them and their success. Donors and scholarship recipients also benefit from the Scholarship Awards Ceremony. You and your student recipient will both be recognized and have the opportunity to meet and discuss the impact of the scholarship.
SINCE OPENING IN 1966 CYPRESS COLLEGE HAS BEEN
INSPIRING STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS
Cypress College: 2024 U.S. Department of Education
Raise the Bar Top 100
Community College
Cypress College – the beautiful, thriving campus that you see today – has modest beginnings in 1966. On September 12, most of the initial student body of 1,200 stood around the flagpole with a barely dry concrete footing for the first flag raising, complete with a Marine color guard and several dignitaries present.
The new community college campus was dubbed the “Instant Campus” by Newsweek Magazine because of the mere 74 days that intervened between the digging of the first shovelful of dirt and the beginning of classes. Indeed, the main electrical transformer for the classrooms was turned on just hours before the first class sessions began. The buildings were all temporary modular constructions, though some of these “temporary” buildings continued in service for over 40 years!
The first students to apply at Cypress College were indeed an intrepid, pioneering group, for when they applied, there was no campus, only a few apartments and houses converted to administrative offices, and a place to register students. But register they did, and the college’s first semester started on schedule with students taking classes with a bare-bones curriculum. After the first year, 25 transfers to the college became its first graduates.
Cypress College has since grown into the beautiful 112-acre campus that it is today, one of the most attractive campuses in the state and nation. It was ranked the #1 community college in California by Niche.com, a well-respected school search platform, in both 2018 and 2020. For two years in a row in 2021 and 2022, Cypress College has been named an Equity Champion of Higher Education for Latinx Students. Cypress College was also honored as a 2023 Aspen Prize Top 150 U.S. Community College. In 2025, Cypress College was recognized as a top 100 community college in the nation by the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Raise the Bar Initiative.
Today, approximately 16,000 students attend Cypress College each semester, taking courses that range from advanced calculus to cybersecurity, nursing, aviation and travel careers, and geographic information systems. The college now offers 174 career-training programs, associate degrees in 98 areas of study, and 56 transfer degrees. Since 2017, Cypress College has also offered a Bachelor of Science in Funeral Service on campus, one of the 15 founding bachelor’s degree programs in any field offered at a California community college. Starting fall 2025, Cypress College will also offer a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, kicking off with an initial cohort of students who have already earned their associate degree in dental hygiene.
Cypress College students have gone on to succeed at four-year institutions across the nation, where Cypress College transfers consistently do as well, or better, academically as their peers who began their education at the four-year school.
The college’s Career Technical Education programs are also premier, with several ranked among the best in the nation. The preponderance of respondents to a 2020 survey of Cypress College CTE students reported improved employment success because of their education at the college. They noted a 61 percent increase in hourly wages after completing their coursework — exceeding the 56 percent average statewide increase — and 93 percent of them voiced satisfaction with their Cypress College experience.
At Cypress College we invest in the success of our students. Buen Cypress! We Take This Journey Together.
Americana Awards: A Brief History
Americana’s Origin
A letter sent 50 years ago to Cypress College from then-president Gerald Ford encouraging organizations to pay tribute to the upcoming 1976 Bicentennial was the impetus for what has become the college’s signature event as well as an Orange County tradition. Based on this letter, Marion “Stoney” Stoneking, then community services director, along with associates Kaleta Brown, theater instructor, and Don Cantrell, public information officer, conceived of a “Community and Americana Awards night,” the purpose of which would be to recognize people, “the sum and substance of America.”
Honorees
Stoney met with the mayors of each of the college’s seven (now eight) service cities and asked each to identify someone who had made “contributions of service” to their city. The people the mayors selected became the Citizens of the Year. (Today, each of the eight cities has a designated committee that selects an honoree from nominations received from the entire community.)
For the first nine years, seven well-known people in various categories (entertainment, business, sports, the arts, the media, etc.) were given the Americana Award. One of these seven honorees also provided the evening’s entertainment. These honorees included Ray Bolger, Edgar Bergen and Ella Mae Morse. Other well-known honorees with a more local connection were: Marion Knott, Mickey Mouse, Carl Karcher, Buddy Ebsen, Dr. Sammy Lee, Cypress alumna Geri Jewell, Florence Arnold, and the Sons of the Pioneers. Since 1985 a Man and/or Woman of the Year has been chosen from numerous nominations. Among those honored have been: Tommy Lasorda, Irv Pickler, Frank Garcia, Bill Medley, Bruno Serato, and Trevor Hoffman, Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
The Evening
From 1976-1984, the event was held on campus. The first Americana evening started with a dinner prepared by the faculty and students in the Culinary Arts program. The dinner was held in the Band Room although in subsequent years it moved to the Culinary Arts Dining Room, which is now the Art Gallery.
Following dinner, the awards ceremony and entertainment were scheduled. Since the theater had not yet been completed, the show that first night, with Ray Bolger performing, was held in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. A year later, the program moved to the theater and was held there every year until it was moved off campus. The event was well received by the community, and the theater was generally full. The awards were given out by Stoney and the college president. At one point, the mayors asked if they could give out the awards, but Stoney said no because he didn’t want the event to become political.
The expenses for the program were paid by the community service tax that colleges were allowed to collect at the time. However, when Prop. 13 was passed, that money was no longer available, which is why Jack Scott, then president, saw the opportunity to raise funds, and the current format was established. The event was moved off campus and was held at the Disneyland Resort from 1985-2023.
In 2005, as the 30th anniversary of the Americana Awards was being celebrated, an Emeritus program was implemented, as over 200 past honorees were recognized and presented with bronze medallions attached to red, white and blue ribbons. Since then, each year’s honorees receive their own medallions.
The on-campus event drew more than 600 attendees to the campus theater. The 200 who attended the dinner prior to the awards and entertainment paid $10 for a dinner of beef stroganoff served over noodles. Of course, today’s event brings 600 together for slightly more than $10 for a four-course dinner in a spectacular setting, the proceeds of which support the work of the Cypress College Foundation. Each year the Foundation provides student scholarships, student emergency assistance, student book loans, and faculty grants among other programs.
The Closing
Stoney had seen a video of Frank Sinatra singing “The House I Live In (That’s America to Me),” and he thought the ideas expressed in the lyrics fit the theme of Americana perfectly, so each year he ended the program by reading the lyrics of that song.
He particularly emphasized the last two lines—“But especially the people/That’s America to me”—because in his mind, that’s what Americana was all about: the importance of people doing their best, serving their communities, and sharing their talents with others.
For 50 years, since that first Americana in 1976, Cypress College has continued to recognize outstanding community volunteers. We sincerely thank you for helping us celebrate these citizens and for assisting us in raising millions of dollars in support of Cypress College students.
In spring 2019, Cypress College selected its first cohort of Presidential Scholars of Distinction, a scholarship intended to recognize nine students — one from each college pathway — who exemplify what it means to be a Cypress College student. We’re pleased to introduce our 2024 cohort of Presidential Scholars of Distinction!
The 2024 scholars are (L-R): Subina Adhikari, Business/CIS; Cassandra Rehome, Career Technical Education; Eric Johnson, Health Science; Kathy Pannell, Kinesiology; Jamie Seitz, Language Arts; Daanish Noor, Science, Engineering, Mathematics; Samantha Ramos, Social Sciences; Saul Conde, Visual & Performing Arts; and Jesus Ramirez, Jr., We Journey Together.

Message From the Cypress College President
Scott W. Thayer
Thank you for joining us to honor our Citizens and Person of the Year and to celebrate the 50th Americana Awards Gala. By participating in this gala, you are also supporting the critical work of Cypress College, including providing financial assistance to our students. Community colleges play a unique role by ensuring that anyone who desires a higher education has the opportunity to enroll.
Your financial contributions allow the Foundation to support our students’ journeys through scholarships, emergency assistance, and funding of other important programs. While these resources may seem simple, you will hear from our students and others tonight just how vital they are to successfully completing an associate degree, university transfer, and/or career certification. In short, your support may well provide a lifeline to help someone continue their education.
Like community colleges themselves, the Americana Awards are a unique and special event that allows the college to give back to the communities we serve while providing financial support to our most-deserving and most-needy students. Cypress College is your community college, and the impact we make together is seen in the success of our students.
The focus of the Americana Awards Gala is to recognize and reward greatness in our community. It is my privilege to recognize the inspiring contributions made by each of our honorees this evening. This group represents the quiet heroes among us. They are people who roll up their sleeves and work to ensure their communities are better today than they were yesterday. Through generosity, ingenuity, hard work, and commitment, each has contributed in ways that leave a lasting impact on their community. It is indeed an honor to celebrate their contributions in this beautiful new venue this evening.
Thank you for being part of this special night. Your support of our honorees lauds the spirit of volunteerism and your generosity in support of Cypress College truly makes a difference. So, on behalf of our students, I offer my sincere gratitude.
Person of the Year
These are the most important facts people need to know about A.C. Green: He is a devout Christian who puts God first in his life. Next are his parents, who taught him the importance of hard work, of doing the best job you can do, of treating others as you want to be treated, of always doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Old-fashioned principles, some would say, but A.C. has built his life on those tenets. Now, after a hugely successful professional basketball career, he is involved in a variety of activities and organizations to teach those same principles to a new generation of young people.
In 1989 A.C. established the A.C. Green Youth Foundation, with a mission to “help young people build self-esteem and character while learning moral and ethical principles that will help them make responsible decisions.” Designed to serve youth from the ages of 8-24, the foundation’s program focuses on sexual abstinence education through his “I’ve Got the Power” and “Game Plan” abstinence curriculum, videos, leadership camps, and website.
Every year approximately 300 boys and girls attend the all-expenses-paid summer leadership program, which features educational opportunities, career exploration, character building, field trips and, of course, plenty of basketball. The goal is to identify and encourage leaders among children who might otherwise be forgotten—those who lack positive role models, are physically and/or emotionally abused, economically disadvantaged or victims of homelessness. A.C. personally supervises each program because he is excited to help these participants live up to their potential, and to encourage them to keep trying and to work hard. He continues to be inspired by the look of accomplishment on their faces when they see their hard work paying off.
At a young age A.C. was introduced to the Boys and Girls Club in his hometown of Portland, Oregon. He had so much fun there that he realized working with kids was something he wanted to do as an adult. He knew that he wanted to give back by helping kids. He also wanted to give young people opportunities and resources that he didn’t have growing up, such as not being in a family that could afford to send him to basketball camps. Serving on the National Board of Trustees of Boys and Girls Clubs, as he does now, has brought A.C. full circle back to his childhood memories and dreams.
In 2016 A.C. teamed up with a variety of individuals and organizations to improve the technology resources available to students at the Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, an off-reservation boarding high school for Native Americans. A.C. was moved to support this project because of his commitment to building future leaders but also because he is part Native American himself.
His interest in developing future leaders has also led him to efforts to encourage healthy eating. He helps the Los Angeles Unified School District feed quality meals to over 600,000 students each year, and he supports a program that encourages kids to become more physically active. His hope is that healthy food and more exercise will help to reduce childhood obesity.
A.C. Green
During the holidays he provides leadership in an annual toy drive for the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Salvation Army, and Los Angeles County Housing Services.
Of course, no biography of A.C. Green would be complete without describing his 16-year career in professional basketball. After playing basketball at Oregon State, A.C. was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, where he was on three national championship teams, along with teammates Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, James Worthy, Byron Scott, Michael Cooper, and Shaquille O’Neal. A.C. currently holds the National Basketball Association Iron Man title, having played an astounding 1,192 consecutive games.
Since retiring from professional basketball, A.C. has pursued various business interests, including owning and operating a number of Denny’s restaurants and several car dealerships. He has been involved with a film company focused on family entertainment, a men’s apparel line, and a health and wellness company. Currently he is a partner in Beyond Global 45 (A.C.’s Lakers jersey was #45), a health-driven food company. His line of Ironman 45 food, which includes deli meats and vegan cookies, is available on Amazon.
A.C. has spoken at venues all over the world and has appeared on many television and radio programs, including The Oprah Winfrey Show and the Today Show. He has also worked as an anchor and news analyst for Trinity Broadcasting Network, hosted various television programs, and is currently the broadcaster for the South Bay Lakers (G League).
Given his exceptional record of community service, it is not surprising that A.C. has received a number of honors and awards. He was recognized by President George W. Bush during Black History Month in 2006. In 2011, he was awarded the Bobby Jones Award by Athletes in Action, an award given for “character, leadership and faith in the world of basketball, in the home and the community.” He has been named to the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, and in 2024 he received the United States Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.
In commenting on this last award, A.C. wrote: “While this award represents a lifetime of work, I believe I’ve got a lot of life left to live. I’m not slowing down anytime soon—after all, they don’t call me the NBA Iron Man for nothing! The work continues, and I plan on sprinting to the finish line, whatever that may look like. Here’s to serving, loving, and living with purpose. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this amazing ride--let’s keep going!”
Congratulations to A.C. on his many accomplishments. May he “keep going” for many years, as he strives to make the world a better place for children and the communities in which they live.
City of Anaheim
Successful entrepreneur. Avid Ducks fan. Former tennis player and coach. Devoted husband and father. Volunteer extraordinaire. Bharat Patel is all these things and more. What motivates him is knowing he is helping others, especially children, “being able to put a smile on people’s faces.”
Born in India, Bharat moved to Orange County with his family in the mid-70’s. His parents purchased the Peter Pan Motor Lodge, which was Bharat’s home as a teenager and may be the reason he sees himself as never having actually grown up. He’s “still a kid at heart,” which keeps him from taking things too seriously.
However, his father’s dream was to build a castle, and eventually he did—the 200-room Castle Inn and Suites, right across the street from Disneyland.
Now, Bharat is the president of Castle Inn, Inc., where he continues his father’s legacy. It is a true family business since both Bharat’s wife, Ragini, and their son, Rakesh, work with Bharat. Their daughter Rashika works for LA Fitness where she manages the Pilates programs. Bharat proudly shares that Castle Inn and Suites was named the Anaheim Minority Business of the Year in 2017 and the Independent Hotel of the Year by the Asian Hotel Owners Association.
Bharat’s list of community service is long, with much of it related to children and young adults. As a result of his own children’s college enrollment, Bharat served on the Whittier College Poet’s Council and on the Board of Trustees. At Chapman University, he was on the Parents’ Council and Town and Gown.
Rakesh, Bharat’s son, is an Eagle Scout, so Bharat has also been involved with the Boy Scouts. As further evidence of his commitment to children, Bharat says that if he won the lottery, he and his wife would use some of the money to build schools in India and Fiji (where their families originated) in honor of their parents.
In Anaheim he has spent 10 years on the Anaheim Transportation Network Board, eight years on the board of Visit Anaheim (two years as treasurer), three years on the Anaheim Police Foundation board, and three years active in the California Lodging Industry Association. In his four years on the board of the Anaheim Community Foundation, he has helped solicit funds to be distributed to individuals and organizations throughout the city.
While he has enjoyed all of these affiliations, there is one that stands out because of his interest in helping children. For over 10 years, he has been on the executive board of the Anaheim YMCA, which serves Anaheim, Stanton, Cypress, and La Palma. As part of that organization, he sponsored a snow day for a thousand kids. He was also involved in the building of the current Y’s six outdoor
Bharat Patel
arena soccer fields and is excited about plans for the Y to build more sports facilities and a community center.
In spite of his corporate responsibilities and his many community commitments, Bharat finds time to enjoy Ducks games, especially with his wife and family. A fan for 32 years, he has only one rule in his suite: There is no talk of business. The focus is on family, friends, and food.
Bharat and Ragini were married in 1987 after “a whirlwind courtship.” They were introduced by mutual friends while Ragini was visiting the United States from her native Fiji Islands. Throughout their marriage they have enjoyed getting together with family for holidays, both American and traditional Indian celebrations.
Bharat believes in the importance of giving back. His goal is to leave the world a little better place than when he entered it. A number of former Americana honorees are friends and mentors, people who have inspired him in his service to his community. But his primary inspiration is his family. What he does, he does for them.
When asked about future plans, Bharat demurs, saying that he hasn’t really given that much thought. But the good news for Anaheim is that he firmly believes he is “just getting started.”
Clearly, there is much more to come from this dedicated volunteer.
City of Buena Park
Mike and Linda Weinstock are a true Cypress College family. Both of them attended Cypress, as did their children. Son Nathan has his degree from the college, and their daughters played water polo for the Chargers. Linda remembers watching the college being built in 1966.
Linda grew up in Buena Park while Mike lived in nearby Lynwood. In addition to attending Cypress, Mike studied engineering technology at CSULB while Linda was a student at Brigham Young University. They met through a mutual friend in 1978 and became best friends who gradually developed a romantic relationship.
They married in 1979 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Los Angeles Temple.
Mike and Linda have been blessed with five children--Nathan, Jacob, Sarah, Rachel, and Rebekah-and now five grandchildren. Family traditions and activities are at the center of their lives. Growing up, their children were active in sports, scouts, and other activities, which meant Mike and Linda spent much of their time attending these events. Typically, however, they didn’t just attend events; Mike was often an assistant coach, as was Linda; and Linda was always the team mom and generally the person running the snack bar.
A favorite family tradition was Christmas caroling, which started small with just a few neighbors but over the years grew to sometimes include 75 people. For many years they sang at a Buena Park nursing home; then the whole group went back to Mike and Linda’s home to enjoy refreshments and sit in front of the fireplace where there was always a big fire, which tradition required regardless of how hot it was outside.
Mike used his engineering technology skills to obtain jobs at various companies. He started at Floating Point Systems as a field engineer and later became an area manager. FPS became Cray Research, which later became Silicon Graphics, Inc., which eventually became Hewlett-Packard; but throughout all these transitions Mike continued his field engineering work.
Linda chose education as her career path. In addition to volunteer work with her children’s PTA’s and school site councils, she worked as a classified employee for the Anaheim Union High School District and as a foreign exchange student coordinator/ESL instructor for a private company. She also owned a children’s book business and worked on and off for 40+ years as a cosmetologist. But perhaps most impressive is she served on the Savanna School District Board of Trustees for 32 years.
Linda & Mike Weinstock
Her interest in the school board was a natural outgrowth of her involvement with her children’s schools as a classroom volunteer and an active PTA officer and member. She was a “hands-on” board member, spending a great deal of time at school sites interacting with administrators, teachers, staff, and especially the children.
While she was chair of the Savanna School District Advisory Committee, Holder Elementary School, located just across the street from Cypress College, was re-opened. Linda very much enjoyed being part of the planning for re-opening a school in such a familiar area.
In recognition of her community service, Linda has been selected for numerous awards including PTA Honorary Service 1991, the Anaheim Union High School District Superintendent’s Award, and the Orange County Woman of the Year Award, 67th Assembly District. During the years her children were growing up, she was often honored for being the team “mom” for numerous sports teams.
Mike’s community service in Buena Park also reflects a deep concern for the well-being of children. For many years he was on the Park and Recreation Commission of Buena Park, serving several terms as chair. For more than 32 years he has been active in the Boy Scouts of America, holding positions such as scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster, and Eagle advisor. He has also been an assistant coach in soccer, flag football, and Buena Park’s Peanut Baseball program, as well as being a youth group advisor for his church. His interest in the city has also led him to a position as a commissioner on the Buena Park Community Service Commission.
Mike, too, has been recognized for his service. Silicon Graphic, Inc., honored him with a “You Make a Difference” award, and both the Boy Scouts of America and the Red Cross have acknowledged his contributions.
When asked why they are so involved in their community, both Mike and Linda credit their parents and their church for inspiring their desire to help others. As Linda says, “I feel that service to others is why I am here,” and undoubtedly Mike would agree. Clearly, their dedication to service and their support of Buena Park exemplify the spirit of giving.
City of Cypress
Rob Johnson greets everyone he encounters with a warm smile, and either a firm handshake or a full-on hug. His friends call him “All-American Rob” and “Mr. Nice Guy.” He exudes kindness and concern for others, the kind of person that can be counted on to help and to do good. Not surprisingly, there is a long list of organizations in Cypress that have benefited from his desire to “do good.”
Rob and his wife of 45 years, Nancy, have two daughters, which led Rob to become involved in the girls’ activities: Cypress Girls Softball League coach and president; AYSO Girls Soccer coach; and Cypress High School sports booster club and Grad Night Committee. Even after the girls became adults and were no longer playing sports, Rob joined the Cypress Challenger Youth Baseball organization so that he could coach kids with disabilities. He credits Jon Peat, the Cypress 2024 Citizen of the Year, with encouraging him to become part of this very worthwhile activity.
The time he spent as a police officer in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Long Beach also opened his eyes to the fact that not all youth get the opportunity to have fun, make new friends, and develop new skills. Because of this need, he was determined to provide those opportunities to as many kids as he could.
His involvement with youth sports led naturally to other kinds of city activities. He chaired the Cypress Parks and Recreation Commission and the Cypress Community Festival. He was the assistant chair of the Cypress Traffic Commission and was on the Board of Directors of the Cypress Chamber of Commerce.
He became known as an innovator in these various organizations. As president of Cypress Girls Softball, he increased the number of teams by 25% and increased the budget by 50%. As chair of the Cypress Festival, he significantly increased the number of volunteers and added new activities including a police K-9 demonstration and a girls vs. boys baseball game. While on the Parks and Recreation Commission, he worked with others to create Cypress’ first holiday decoration contest.
His leadership skills, hard work, and dedication to the city of Cypress did not go unnoticed, as evidenced by the fact that he was elected to the city council in 2012. Of course, the fact that he knocked on 7,842 doors during his campaign might also have had something to do with his victory. He was on the council from 2012-2020, serving two terms as mayor.
Rob has been honored as the Cypress Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year and has also been recognized by the California state assembly and the state senate for his work on the city council. Because of his love of softball, the most meaningful recognition is probably having the Cypress Parks and Recreation Commission name the main diamond at Arnold Park in his honor.
When Rob decided to leave police work, he moved to the spirits and wine industry. His father and grandfather had both been in the wine business, so it was an industry that Rob was familiar
Rob Johnson
with. He worked for Crystal Geyser Water Company for 34 years, ending his career as the Western Region Sales Manager. Rob is thankful that Crystal Geyser is a family-owned business that was very supportive of his community involvement.
Since his retirement in 2024, Rob has enjoyed golf, pickleball, tending his plumerias, and traveling. He and Nancy have visited 42 states and are determined to visit the other eight in the next few years. Rob has also become active in the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men’s fellowship group that supports a variety of charitable work in the community.
Ever the sports fan, Rob describes his perfect day as ending with “reading the news to make sure the Boston Red Sox won the night before, the USC Trojans won on Saturday, and the Green Bay Packers won on Sunday.” Another winner? The city of Cypress because of Rob’s decision to become involved “to make the city a better place to live, work, and play.”
City of Garden Grove
Dr. True McMahan’s eyes sparkle as she talks about her patients and the joy she gets from one-on-one interactions with them. Yes, she is the doctor, constantly assessing their health and their needs, but she is also one human being connecting with another. In her view, they are partners working together.
This view of medical practice has put Dr. True (as she prefers to be called) in high demand as a long-time physician in Garden Grove. She is currently the medical director of the Emergency Department at Vituity and Garden Grove Hospital Medical Center, as well as the medical director of Vituity and MemorialCare Outpatient Hospice and Palliative Care services.
That may sound like two full-time jobs, but Dr. True is not bothered by the workload. She has plenty of energy left over to serve her community in additional ways. She has been a member of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce for the past eight years and is currently that organization’s board chair. She is also on the board of the Garden Grove Community Foundation.
In addition to being an outstanding physician—she was voted one of Orange Coast Magazine’s Top Doctors in 2021—Dr. True participates in competitive ballroom dancing. Of course, dancing is great exercise and a powerful way of relieving stress, but she also enjoys the “good stress” of competing.
Not surprisingly, even in that arena she finds a way to serve her community. She has been a member of the Rx Ballroom Dance nonprofit board for the past five years. Rx Ballroom Dance’s mission is “to use ballroom dance to preserve and enhance the quality of life in people who are confronting neurological conditions.” So, this community service combines two of Dr. True’s passions: medicine and dance.
She and her family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam when she was seven years old. Her father had been a pilot for South Vietnam, working with the United States Air Force, so the family was able to move first to Pensacola, FL, and then Houston.
After graduating from high school, Dr. True knew she wanted to work in the medical field but wasn’t sure if she wanted to be a doctor, so she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Houston Baptist University. However, while working as a nurse, she found herself constantly asking, “Why?” about so many medical decisions and practices that medical school became an obvious next step.
She earned her medical doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine and then moved to California to fulfill her residency requirements in emergency medicine at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center. She chose this field because of the excitement and unpredictability of the emergency room. As a Girl Scout, she had learned the importance of always being prepared, so she used her ability to handle whatever happened to become a very successful emergency room doctor.
Dr. True McMahan
She also credits her high school drill team coach for teaching her the importance of PMA, a positive mental attitude. This approach to her work and life in general gives her energy and the ability to focus on helping others. She is now a role model to her own team of colleagues, exhorting them every day to have PMA.
Although she dislikes being in the spotlight, the city of Garden Grove has refused to let her go unrecognized. She has received the Garden Grove Service Excellence Award and the House of Representatives Woman of Distinction Award, as well as being named the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce Director of the Year in 2021.
In spite of her hectic schedule, Dr. True places a high priority on regular contact with her husband and three children—Justin, who is in medical school; Aidan, who is finishing his BA at CSUF; and Kylie, who is graduating from high school this June.
Dr. True’s compassion for each person she meets, believing that every individual has something to contribute “to the tapestry of life,” has made her a beloved member of the Garden Grove community.
City of La Palma
For nearly 50 years, Rick and Jean Daum have volunteered in La Palma, as a way of “keeping La Palma the great community that it is,” but they have also served the communities of La Mirada, Cerritos, Whittier, Los Alamitos, and even Soldotna, Alaska!
Their story as a couple began on August 25,1965, when they met at the Douglas Aircraft employment office on their first day of work. Shortly after that, they had their first date and ended up getting married in 1967.
They moved to La Palma in 1976, where they raised their two daughters and started participating in local organizations. Rick volunteered as the coach for his daughters’ softball teams, while Jean volunteered at the girls’ elementary school and with Blue Birds, Brownies (now known as Embers), and Girl Scouts.
They were both still working during this time, Jean as an administrative secretary at Douglas/ McDonnell Douglas/Boeing and later as an executive secretary for the executive chef at the Disneyland Hotel. Rick had a 34-year career in law enforcement, first as a deputy sheriff, then as an investigator in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Rick was also in the Coast Guard Reserve for 20 years. One of his most interesting assignments was during a 6-month period following 9/11, when he helped with security at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
After retiring in 2003, they both felt that they had a great deal to offer the local communities, so they began volunteering in earnest. They became Volunteers in Policing (VIP’s), working with the La Palma Police Department. In that role they have assisted with Red Ribbon Week, helped with traffic control for special events, performed vacation checks, and provided other services that support the community. Jean has been on the VIP board, serving as secretary and currently as administrator. Rick has been the treasurer and vice president.
They are also part of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which educates its volunteers about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, search and rescue, and first aid. They often assist with CERT training courses.
Rick has volunteered with the La Palma Beautification Committee, helping to organize the Concerts in the Park series, while Jean became a volunteer at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility. They have also helped with Neighborhood Watch in La Palma.
Jean & Rick Daum
Their work in the La Mirada community has highlighted a different interest, the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. They have both been ushers at performances and have held various offices on the theatre’s executive board. The annual La Mirada Spring Beautification Program also attracted their interest, so they volunteered as judges. They canvassed neighborhoods to find homes that had exceptional landscaping and exterior maintenance, then nominated the select few that deserved special recognition.
In Cerritos they volunteered as ushers and helped with special events at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center. In Whittier Rick enjoyed being part of the Rosie the Riveter Association, which he joined to honor his grandmother who was a “Rosie” at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach during World War II. In Los Alamitos Rick and Jean volunteered at the front desk of the Joint Forces Training Base, greeting veterans and their families as they came in for processing.
And what about Soldotna? When the couple retired, they bought a second home on a river in this small town, primarily so that Rick could enjoy fishing and they could also entertain family and friends, but even there the spirit of volunteerism was too powerful to ignore. Jean helped in the accounting department and gift shop of the Central Peninsula General Hospital, earning a service award for volunteering 100 hours in 2012.
The couple has received numerous other awards and recognition for their many activities. The La Palma Police Department has honored them with “VIP of the Year” awards, and the city of La Mirada has recognized each of them with the “Volunteer Service” award.
They are very proud of their family, in particular their five grandsons who, with support from Rick and Jean, all qualified as Eagle Scouts. The grandsons also all earned college degrees. And speaking of college, Jean is a Cypress College alum!
Since retirement, they have visited 55 countries and all 50 states, but they are always happy to be back home in La Palma, where their many volunteer activities have made them an integral part of the community.
City of Los Alamitos/Rossmoor
Randy Hill is well known in Los Alamitos as a devoted husband and father, a busy real estate associate, a very active community volunteer, and a coach for many youth sports, but farmer? Yes, having spent summer and school breaks on his great-grandparents’ Texas farm, where he helped with the cows and crops and enjoyed the “everyone-knows-everyoneelse” atmosphere of a small town, he still thinks about the life he almost chose. As he says, it is more in his nature to do that kind of work, which is probably why for 11 years he did field maintenance for Los Alamitos Youth Baseball.
Randy and his wife, Diana, high school sweethearts, grew up in Santa Monica; but the cost of homes in that area led them to Los Alamitos and its promise of small-town friendliness and great schools. Randy explains, “Los Al is a great place to raise a family, and I am blessed to have raised mine here.”
His two sons, Ross and Austin, went to Los Al schools, including Los Alamitos High School, where the boys played football. Randy was president of the Football Boosters club at the high school, as well as treasurer of the Baseball Boosters club and president of Los Alamitos Youth Baseball. Not only did he assume leadership positions in sports organizations, he also coached flag football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and golf for local youth.
But it wasn’t just sports that drew Randy’s support. He served as president of the Los Alamitos Education Foundation (now an emeritus board member), participated on the Zoning Code Advisory Committee, and was a member of the Community Schools Media Partnership board. He is currently on the Los Alamitos Traffic Commission and the board of the Griffin Football Foundation.
He has also been a board member of the St. Isadore’s Historical Plaza Organization, providing strong support to this group as it works to fulfill its mission of renovating the nearly 100-year-old St. Isadore chapel and surrounding area to make it a gathering place for community events and services.
As president-elect of the Los Alamitos, Cypress, and Seal Beach Rotary Club, he is looking forward to helping the club continue its growth after a loss of members as a result of the pandemic. He is hoping to recruit more younger members, a goal that should not be too difficult to achieve, given his many contacts with former athletes that he coached.
Early in his career, Randy worked for FedEx. He also helped manage his wife’s business; and for several years, when his sons were in elementary school, he was a substitute teacher because he was concerned that there were no male teachers in their school.
His greatest source of pride is his family. Happily, his sons and grandchildren all live in Southern California, so they are able to get together often. A favorite family activity is going out to breakfast together after church.
Randy Hill
A real estate broker associate, Randy enjoys using his business to provide events for the community, including an annual Easter Egg Hunt, an ice cream truck for end-of-summer fun, and concerts in the neighborhood park, which he co-sponsors with the city.
His contributions to the community have not gone unnoticed, as he has been recognized with a Hero of the Heart award for the Los Alamitos Unified School District and a Los Alamitos Education Foundation King of Hearts award. The Los Alamitos Museum named him Citizen of the Year in 2012; and his company, First Team Real Estate, has honored him with several Hall of Fame recognitions.
When not working or volunteering, Randy enjoys playing “any game that involves a ball,” as well as board and card games with family and friends. He enjoys golf, softball, tennis, and snow skiing. He and Diana love to travel, especially to visit new and exciting destinations.
While Randy appreciates being recognized for his contributions to Los Alamitos, what matters most is his desire to give back to the community that has given his family so much, knowing that he has “left things better than [he] found them.”
City of Seal Beach
“I’ll do it,” says Scott Weir. Regardless of the request, when asked to do something to help the people of Seal Beach, Scott steps up and says, “I’ll do it.” That sentence is his mantra, and the record bears him out.
The list of Seal Beach organizations and activities he supports is long and varied, including pony baseball, national junior basketball, soccer, the Beachcomber Neighborhood Watch, Grace Community Church, St. Anne’s Church, the Fish Fry, the Arts and Crafts Fair, and the Christmas Parade.
He has also participated in community activities in nearby Los Alamitos: St. Isadore’s Board of Directors, Los Alamitos/ Seal Beach Rotary, Los Alamitos Traffic Commission, Los Alamitos Education Foundation Board (Emeritus), the Community and Schools Media Partnership, Griffin Football Foundation, and both Los Alamitos Youth Baseball and Los Alamitos High School Football Boosters, two organizations he led as president.
When his wife, Betty, offered to chair the Seal Beach Rough Water Swim in 1988, Scott jumped in to help. Together they put on that event, which four years later led to Seal Beach hosting the 16K Open Water US Swimming Championship, which served as the Perth Olympic Open Water Trials.
Scott was the fundraising chair for the Seal Beach Centennial in 2015. His team raised more than $170,000 for various centennial events, leaving an unused surplus that the city’s Recreation Department was able to use for exercise stations, equipment, and programs.
For nearly 15 years Scott has been active in the Seal Beach Lions Club, which, with over 400 members, is the largest Lions club in North America. He has chaired a number of Lions’ projects, including the McGaugh School Carnival BBQ, Beepball for the Blind, and the World War II Submarine Memorial restoration. He has held various leadership positions in the organization, serving as president in 2021-22. Currently his primary responsibility is as the senior “Leo” Advisor, Leo being the Lions-sponsored organization for teenagers. He enjoys working with these young people, whom he describes as smart and committed to community service.
For his dedication to the Lions Club, he has received the highest recognition possible, the Melvin Jones Fellowship, three times.
Scott is very much a “local boy,” having lived in Seal Beach from the day his parents brought him home from the hospital after his birth. He attended local schools, including McGaugh Elementary and Huntington Beach High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science in business management at CSULB, where he played water polo, earning the honor of being named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association All-American Water Polo team in 1979.
Scott Weir
His career has been in the technology industry, holding positions with Xerox, Hewlett-Packard, and Compaq. Since 2021 he has been an account executive for public sector software with Oracle. In that position he works with local governments to select software systems to handle their data and technological infrastructure needs.
To a large extent, Scott’s commitment to civic work in Seal Beach is due to his parents’ example. His dad, an engineer, was involved in the community, in particular Boy Scouts. His mother was active in the PTA and went on to serve as the Seal Beach city clerk.
Scott and Betty are the proud parents of daughter Chelsea and son Jake. They are also happy grandparents to Jake’s two sons, Liam and Keaton. Family traditions include decorating their home for all the holidays, hosting family gatherings, and organizing an annual bonfire at the beach.
Betty is a former travel agent, so she takes the lead in planning their trips. They have traveled extensively in Europe, visited Egypt, and are looking forward to a fall trip to New Zealand.
Scott’s dedication to helping others can be summed up in these simple but important “rules”: “Put the shopping cart back. Open doors for the elderly and others. Never litter (leave your campsite better than it was when you got there). Say ‘yes’ to helping. Strive to be a good person always.”
City of Stanton
“If, at the end of the day, we haven’t done a good deed, then the day was wasted,” says Nena de la Torre. As her biography makes clear, she never wastes a day.
Nena’s contributions to Stanton include nearly every community organization and event in the city. One of the first activities Nena became involved in was the Stanton Relay for Life. With her face painted purple (purple being the color associated with this event), Nena was a co-sponsor and team captain for the annual event.
With the encouragement of Stanton mayor Dave Shawver, Nena soon found other events that attracted her participation and sponsorship: the annual Easter Egg Hunt, National Night Out, Halloween for Family and Friends, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, Veterans Day at the park, the annual Thanksgiving dinner at Harry’s Café, monthly food drives at Stanton Park, and the annual Family Fiesta at St. Polycarp. She provides sponsorship dollars to all these events; but equally as important, she is hands-on, showing up early and staying late, contributing her leadership and organizational skills to make these events successful. She helps because “at the end of the day, after any event is over, even though I’m exhausted, [I am] very happy. Seeing faces that have new hope and a friendly smile just keeps me going.”
Although Stanton is certainly her primary community when it comes to service, she is also helping beyond that. Recently she has become involved in Each One Teach One (EOTO), a nonprofit that helps pay for the health care, education, housing and nourishment of orphans and poverty-stricken children in the Southern California area and in various parts of the world, such as India and Mexico.
Nena has helped raise $150,000 and will soon be going to Nairobi, Kenya, where 700 children will get backpacks, schools supplies, shoes, and other necessities, and their villages will get larger items such as a bus and a generator. Again, she is looking forward to seeing the faces of these children as they receive some basic necessities that will help them become educated and move beyond the poverty that they have known all their lives.
Nena brings her same energy and full commitment to her family business, Golden Touch Auto Center, which offers full-service auto repairs and towing. She is one of the very few women in this business, leading her to be even more committed to being successful. She is constantly thinking about how she can expand and improve her business, and yet what is most important to her is being kind and compassionate toward her customers.
She combines her love for raising funds for charitable causes with another passion: running races. Triathlons are her specialty, including an Ironman competition in Arizona, which included a full marathon (26 miles) as well as an extended bicycle course and open-water swim.
Sanjuana De La Torre
Nena treasures her family—her three sons, two young grandchildren, and her mother, who lives with Nena. Family celebrations occur regularly, “celebrating anything and everything.” Her mother plays the important role of teacher and storyteller, helping the family stay connected with Nena’s hometown of Jalisco, Mexico, and their many relatives who still live there.
Nena’s sons help run the family business. They also follow the example set by Nena and her late husband, Mehdi Motadi, by giving a helping hand to whoever needs it, especially if they think no one is looking.
In spite of this desire in the family not to call attention to themselves, Nena has been recognized as the Businesswoman of the Year in 2022 and 2023, and a Woman of Distinction in Orange County. The California legislature also recognized her Golden Touch Auto Center as a business of the month in 2024.
Nena is a person of passion and enthusiasm. She loves to read, she loves music, she loves traveling (she’s visited 76 countries), and she loves life, believing that “sharing what you have with your fellow humans will always bring you joy.”

From the first Americana Awards in 1976, Seal Beach was included with the neighboring areas of Los Alamitos and Rossmoor. In 2004, it was determined that residents of Seal Beach should be recognized separately. Since that time, there have been 20 Citizens of the Year from Seal Beach who were chosen by a committee of that city’s residents and honored at the Americana Awards

Rick transferred from Cypress College and continued to play basketball for Indiana State University and San Jose State where he earned his bachelors degree in business.
Rick had a long career in professional basketball in the U.S. and Europe and is now the President of the NBA Players Association. Among his many entrepreneurial endeavors, he is a founding partner in Elite Beverage, a successful wine and tequila distribution business and serves on several non-profit boards.
Rick is an avid supporter of Cypress College, organizing alumni gatherings, mentoring and supporting student athletes and donating to the athletics program. He is very passionate about how Cypress impacted his life and also supports the Cypress College Foundation through the Golf Classic, Americana Awards, President’s Night at the Theater and other endeavors. Thank you and congratulations to Rick Darnell, the Cypress College Alumnus of the Year.

FORMER CYPRESS COLLEGE
In an important step to establish a lasting legacy for Cypress College students, the Foundation established the Legacy Society. Donors who commit to an endowment of $10,000 or more through a will, trust, annuity, insurance policy or outright cash, are inducted into the Legacy Society. The Foundation inducted 36 Charter Member families into the Legacy Society in 2017. Legacy Society donors include members of the community, Cypress College faculty, managers, staff, and retirees as well as Foundation Board members. Of particular interest is that five former college presidents have all committed their support to Cypress College through the Legacy Society.
To join the Legacy Society or for more information contact:
I am participating in the Cypress Legacy Society because of the transforming impact that it will have on students. Particularly important is the education this will provide for first-generation students, students from low-income families, and students deserving a second chance. My contribution and the contributions from others to the Cypress Legacy Society will provide scholarships to deserving students for many years to come.

PRESIDENTS SUPPORT LEGACY SOCIETY
Bob Simpson
Cypress College is a special place doing amazing things for students. Having been a member of the Charger family, I know the value of our mission in transforming the lives of our students. Being a Legacy donor provides the opportunity to support that mission now and into the future.
JoAnna Schilling
As President of Cypress College, it was my honor to contribute to, and support, the Legacy Society at Cypress College. When a donor gives to the Legacy Society they are making a life-changing difference in the lives of students who are beating the odds of economic, racial, and cultural barriers. While our students possess a resilience born of courage, grit, and enormous potential, the Legacy Society ensures they also have the financial support to achieve their dreams. I am proud to commit to an endowment that ensures the economic future of these amazing students, and the communities in which they live.
Margie Lewis
I’m a member of the Cypress College Legacy Society because I want to do all I can to ensure that future students will have the financial support they need to complete their degrees and certificates. By setting up an endowment through the Foundation, I know my gift will be used effectively to help students for many years to come. It’s my way of following Nelson Henderson’s quotation: “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
Mike Kasler
Having immigrated to the United States with my family, my parents ingrained in me the importance of education. They believed education was the “equalizer” in terms of achieving one’s goals. As a youngster I didn’t always understand that, but as I grew older I did and instilled the same in my children. There is no better return on investment for our country than investing in a student’s education---the Legacy Society does that! You can become part of that investment.
Bob Simpson, JoAnna Schilling, Margie Lewis, Mike Kasler

An endowment gift may be designated for a specific purpose. Please let us know if you wish to restrict the use of income from your gift for a specific program or purpose. You may wish to make the endowment gift in your honor, or in memory of another person. We can help you make a gift that creates a legacy of remembrance for you and your loved ones.
For additional information on endowment giving or to review information about our endowment plan, please contact us. We look forward to helping you create your legacy!
YOUR
SUPPORT
MAKES OUR WORK POSSIBLE
Did you know that by making a gift to our endowment, you can create a permanent source of income that will ensure the continuation of our programs far into the future? This type of meaningful gift can create a legacy for you while providing lasting support for our mission.
CREATE YOUR LEGACY WITH AN ENDOWMENT GIFT
YOUR LEGACY SOCIETY ENDOWMENT GIFT WILL GROW TO BECOME A PERMANENT LEGACY OF SUPPORT FOR OUR GOOD WORK!
WHY MAKE A LEGACY SOCIETY ENDOWMENT GIFT?
An endowment gift is a gift to an established fund that is permanently invested.
When you make an endowment gift, you create a steady stream of annual income to support our good work.
Your gift will be maintained in perpetuity and make a lasting, meaningful difference.
There are several ways in which you can make an endowment gift either today or as part of your estate plan.
WAYS TO MAKE AN ENDOWMENT GIFT
CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY
When you transfer your cash or appreciated property (stock, CDs or real estate) to our endowment, we will agree to pay you fixed-income for life at a rate based on your age. You may benefit from a charitable deduction and a portion of your income may even be tax free.
GIFT OF CASH
You can start an endowment with a single gift of cash paid today or over time. Your Legacy Society gift will grow over time, ensuring future success for Cypress College students.
BEQUEST
A gift to our endowment made through your will or trust, may provide your estate with valuable tax savings. Your endowment bequest can be a gift of a specific asset, percentage of your estate or the residue (what's left after specific bequests are made to your family). Your endowment gift will create a permanent legacy of lasting support for our work!
Cypress College Foundation thanks Total Environmental Management for their tireless support to ensure our students reach their full potential
Congratulations on a well deserved recognition to each of the honorees!

When you know the secret of throwing one, a boomerang always comes back to you. In the same way, our organization has a secret you may not know. It's a charitable gift annuity.
When you fund a charitable gift annuity with us, you get cash back at high, fixed annual rates that never change.
BUILD YOUR LEGACY WITH MANY HAPPY RETURNS
OUR CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY GIVES YOU PAYMENTS EVERY YEAR FOR AS LONG AS YOU LIVE
When you fund a charitable gift annuity, we agree to send you a check each year for as long as you live, based on your funding amount and your age at the time of funding. The payment amount never changes. In addition, you may also receive:
●
An income tax deduction this year for part of the funding amount.
●
● After a lifetime of payments to you, any remaining funds automatically support our mission in your name.
If you fund it by transferring stock, some of your capital gains are eliminated, some spread over a number of years.
Call or email us to learn what your payment rate and tax benefits will be. When you do, ask about deferred charitable gift annuities and other options that may give you greater payments and tax benefits.

The Cypress College Foundation is proud to once again announce the annual scholarship in tribute to all Americana Honorees. The Americana Awards Outstanding Community Leader Scholarship will be awarded to a Cypress College student who demonstrates extraordinary service to the community.
This $1,000 scholarship was awarded for the first time at the May 2021 Cypress College Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony.
If you would like to contribute to the Americana Community Service Scholarship Fund, please make your online donation at Cypresscollegefoundation.org or mail your check to the Foundation Office.
Vivian Tieu was the first recipient of the Americana Awards Community Leader Scholarship in 2021. Vivian is a Cypress College Ambassador and pursuing a career as a Hospital Administrator. Congratulations Vivian for demonstrating outstanding leadership on campus and beyond!
