GROANING BOARD DINNER GROANING BOARD: The name derives from medieval days when so much food was served that the table “groaned” from the weight. Guests are escorted to the feast by the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes & Drums. The multi-course meal is traditionally served family style, and all guests at the table join in the passing and sharing of specially-prepared, gastronomic delights. The evening is hosted by a colonial-dressed 18th century ‘master of ceremonies’, who explains the meaning of the Groaning Board dinner and introduces the courses and entertainment throughout the evening. With each course, entertainment is offered, which may include strolling musicians, dancers, storytellers, and perhaps a famous 18th century person will join in the fun and raise a toast or share some meaningful dialogue. The highlight being the rhythmic beat of a fife and drum corps heralded by a procession of waiters holding huge trays of the main course high above their heads! Dining tables are adorned with green and white-checked table overlays. Black colonial lanterns are placed in the middle to serve as a simple centerpiece. SAMPLE ITINERARY: Cocktail Reception prior to dinner – colonial greeter(s) will welcome your guests to enjoy cocktails. During cocktails, your guests will be entertained by strolling colonial balladeers as they play background music. Fife and Drum Corps – enter cocktail reception and welcome your guests and then ask them to follow as they escort to dinner. Colonial Host to take the stage and welcome guests – explains the groaning board dinner, yard napkin which they will find at their place setting and how the evening will flow. Dinner Menu – to be planned with conference service manager – meal consists of the following courses: soup, salad, bread service, (3) main dishes, (3) side dishes and most times, the famous Williamsburg Tart Cherry Trifle. Pitchers of Ale are placed on the table as well! During each course, a form of entertainment is provided. Please see suggested list of entertainment below:

Golden Horseshoe Golf Club Outing and Team Building Options

Team Format Ideas: Team format tournaments are ideal for meetings and conventions because they can merge groups of various sizes with any level of play desired. It allows a field as small as 16 to as large as 144 players and even affords the opportunity to pair better players and less skilled or beginners without sacrificing fun, competition or the ability to build teamwork and camaraderie. Scramble: The most popular format for large groups because only the good shots are played. All players hit a tee shot, then the best one of the foursome is selected and all players take their next shot from that spot. The process is repeated until the ball is holed out. The score on each hole is recorded as a team score. A large mixed-level group with a number of beginners would be most suited for a scramble. Best Ball: This format may be played with two, three or four-person teams. Golfers play their own ball on each hole. The lowest score of the team is then recorded as the team score for each hole. The format may be played with or without a handicap. Low Net / Low Gross Foursome: This format is used most often by more skilled players. Golfers on each team play their own ball and the total score of the foursome, less their handicaps, determines the winner. Individual Stroke Play: Suitable for small groups or skilled golfers, stroke play allows each golfer to play their own ball and score independent of other golfers. Rewarding Participants: Prizes are typically awarded to the foursome with the winning score or to the individual with the lowest score, depending upon the tournament format. The more prizes awarded, the more goodwill created. It is also a good idea to award prizes for an eagle and a hole in one. The golf staff can organize the perfect prize package for your group or event. Gift certificates are also available for prizes. Corporate logo apparel and merchandise from national name brands are available. Ask about bulk order discounts with the golf shop.

Additional Suggestions for On Course Events

Longest Drive: On a long, straightaway hole (typically a par five), the longest tee shot that lands in the fairway is awarded a prize for the event. Closest to the Hole: Any par three on the course would be adequate for this contest. The tee shot that comes to rest closest to the hole is the winner. Straightest Drive: On a long, straightaway hole, a white line will be painted down the middle of the fairway. The tee shot that comes to rest closest to the line is the winner. Beat the Pro: Challenge a Golden Horseshoe golf professional on a specific tee shot on a par three hole during your event. If anyone in the group beats the pro, a prize is awarded. (Additional fees apply for golf professional time during event).

Golf Team Building Activities

Executive Golf – Spotswood Course: The Spotswood Course provides the perfect 9 hole short course option for groups looking to hold an abbreviated golf event. At just over 1800 yards from the back tees or just under 700 yards from the forward tees with a par of 31, Spotswood can be set up perfectly for your event. The nine hole layout can generally be played in two hours or less in an average round and if played as a scramble, may even further decrease the amount of time spent on the course. With a much shorter course and a relaxed atmosphere, there is not a need for all players to be skilled golfers. A great way to introduce golf to a group without the pressures of playing a full length championship golf course. Available for morning or afternoon play. The Horse Race: The horse race (also known as a shootout) is a golf event that can be played by golfers of all skill levels, and even those who have never picked up a club before. Groups are split into teams of four or five people per team, preferably with varying skill levels of golfers in each group. At least one person who would consider themselves a golfer would be good for each group. All teams tee off on the same hole, one after the other, until all balls are in play. An alternate shot or scramble format can be used with each person hitting a shot until the ball is in the hole. The team or teams with the highest score are eliminated on each hole. Play continues until one team emerges the winner. The entire group follows the action like a gallery would at a golf event. The event ends with teams cheering each other on and groups more dependent on the other members to get the ball to the hole. Pricing is available per hole played and can be limited to as few holes as you’d like. Afternoon play only. Approximate time of play 1-2 hours depending on size of group.

GOLF

Additional Suggestions for On Course Events

The Relay Race: The relay race is a golf event that can be played by golfers of any skill level, or even non-golfers. Groups are split into teams of four, preferably with varying skill levels in each group. The entire group can use one hole and everyone can watch each team, or four teams of four can play each hole to make the activity move more quickly. Team members will be designated to hit the drive, the approach, the putt and so on. The clock starts as the designated driver will hit a shot to the person waiting at a safe distance off to the side of the hole. When the ball is safely on the ground, the second player armed with two or three clubs, picks a club, runs to the ball and hits the second shot toward the green. The third player, armed with a best guess at the appropriate clubs to hole the ball out, runs to the ball, then attempts to get the ball in the hole. The order repeats until the ball is in the hole and the clock is stopped. A timekeeper must be designated for the group, as the object of the race is to get the ball in the hole in the fastest time. Each team has the option to throw the ball down the hole to the next player to advance it if they are not a skilled enough golfer to swing a club. Strategy is a key in this teambuilding game. Afternoon play only. Two-hour time limit. Each group generally takes about 2 minutes per hole. Pricing based on time and number of holes used. Night Golf: Chipping, Pitching and Putting contests are great at dusk with glow-in-the-dark golf balls. Night golf at Golden Horseshoe can also be played on a number of various hole combinations on the Gold or Spotswood courses. Groups tee off in a regular shotgun tournament format after dark and play the course with lighting provided by glow sticks and glow in the dark markers and golf balls. Fairways, hazards, greens, and tee markers are all marked with glow sticks for safety and directional purposes. A glowing insert marks the golf holes and the golf flag is also marked with a glowing insert. Pricing varies by course and number of holes reserved and will include the cost of glow ball materials. Approximate time of event is 2 – 2 ½ hours. Bulls-Eye Golf : Gold or Green Course Practice Facility or Gold Course Short Game Area A dart board configuration or four circles with varying points is painted around the flag stick on the target green surface. Each group or player on a team hits a shot or throws a golf ball to the green from the designated tee box area. Each group or team keeps score based on the number of points accumulated each round and a winner is chose at the conclusion. The tee box can be catered with food service and drink stations (food and beverage pricing available from conference services).
