FOREWORD

I have to start by thanking everyone involved with Catterick Village JFC for continuing to voluntarily give up your time to deliver all of the amazing activity and opportunities for our players that are detailed in the pages that follow! It is a credit to your hours of effort that, despite the weather being against us on a weekly basis this season, the club continues to thrive and progress on and off the pitch.

Please do take the time to read and enjoy this edition of the club’s newsletter which is packed with information for players, guardians and club officials alike (both current and potential new members). Speaking of volunteering and sustaining the club, we are actively seeking new volunteers for important club positions. If you are interested in finding out more about the roles below please get in touch with us at info@catterickvillagejfc.net

Roses. Each quarter we have produced this newsletter there has been unprecedented news to share. This quarter is no different. The front cover rightly majors on the club’s newly established (Jun 23) Roses Girl’s (and Ladies) football section. A roaring success to date, it is now one of the most wellattended SQUAD sections in the whole of the country!

FOREWORD

A pivotal moment only a few weeks ago also saw the U16 Roses play their first official fixture, making club history - great to see (P15).

Of course this success doesn’t happen without the investment of significant time and energy. Both Paul Hankin and Darren Rhodes are entirely responsible for this success and deserve genuine praise (alongside supporting their own squads, developing this newsletter and driving the club’s development plan forward). Paul Hankin has been rightly recognised for leading this by the FA through a ‘For The Love Of The Game’ award; the third club official to receive this in recent years. Congratulations Paul and thank you (P10).

You will find some planned club dates for the diary too. The Horse Racing Night is a great way to build team work and friendships across the club, whilst helping to generate important funding and support for our ambitious plans to continue to deliver outstanding opportunities to our players.

Play your part in caring for and respecting our facilities, including the new Changing Room floors. Don’t wear boots inside the pavilion, use the boots wash areas for muddy boots and only use the parking areas directed by your coaches.

Yours in football,

COUNTY FA NEWS

Hello Catterick Village!

I am Jasmine Morris, Football Development Officer for North Riding FA. I am the Football Development Team Leader, in addition to overseeing and implementing the strategic objectives for Women and Girls and Disability football across North Riding. Additionally, I also have the role of Deputy Designated Safeguarding Officer, for North Riding.

I have been in post for nearly 5 years, and within that time we have seen female participation almost double. With more females playing football than ever, we have been able to grow our leagues to include younger development age groups and also a full female pathway, something which I am extremely proud of. Of course, none of this would be possible without the great work of our grassroots volunteers, embracing female football and allowing for equal opportunities at their club.

Additionally, we have been able to implement various recreational centres across the county including the fantastic SQUAD girl's session at Catterick Village, which is one of the highest-attended SQUAD providers in the country!

I would like the thank Catterick Village, (A special shout out to Paul and Daz) for their dedication towards establishing and growing their Roses' section. I look forward to helping you develop it further in the coming seasons!

If anyone would like to know anything more about Women and Girls, Disability football or any general questions, feel free to get in touch with me -

Guidance for use of shinpads in Grassroots Football

The FA has issued its latest guidance on the use of shin pads in grassroots football, which North Riding FA is keen to reiterate to our local grassroots football community.

Safety is a key consideration for our game, and the Laws of the Game state that shin guards/pads are a compulsory piece of equipment.

Shin pads play an important role in injury prevention, as they are intended to protect the shin from injury. The amount of shin physically covered is an important consideration, as any part of the shin that is not covered is not as well protected.

‘Micro’ or ‘mini’ shin pads may therefore increase the risk of injury, due to the smaller amount of shin covered, compared to larger sized shin pads.

We advise that, when considering the protection offered by shin pads, that safety is prioritised by ensuring a good proportion of the shin area is covered, and therefore protected.

The materials used are also an important factor. Always look for a CE mark, which means the shin pads achieve minimum standards.

We suggest that shin pads not carrying such a mark should not be worn, as they may present an increased risk of injury to players.

Please give these protection levels serious consideration when deciding what is right for you or for your child

Paul Hankin becomes latest Club Official awarded with NRCFA ‘For The Love Of The Game’ recognition

We are proud to share with you all that Paul Hankin has been awarded a NRCFA #fortheloveofthegame award.

For The Love Of The Game is an awards scheme that aims to recognise hard-working individuals who go the extra mile to ensure our teams, clubs and leagues are able to operate within our county.

In the past 12 months Paul has put in hours of work to create and establish the Roses section, offering football for girls aged 12-16. The Roses section officially launched in June 2023 and has grown since then, with the older girls having their first match recently. During the time leading up to the launch, Paul also completed his FA level 1 and has recently attended presentations on female sports injuries. The creation of the girls only ‘Roses’ section also led to the formation of the ladies team, creating a pathway within the club for the girls to progress. Without the time put in by Paul, the Roses section would not have happened as quickly and successfully as it has done.

Thanks to Jasmine Morris of North Riding County FA who recently attended one of the Roses U16 training sessions to present the award personally to Paul in front of the girls. Hopefully we didn’t disrupt the training session too much!!!

Paul joins Bob Thornton and Ryan Barker as representatives of the club to receive this award from North Riding County FA

Next generation of Club

Coaches/Volunteers

We are proud that we have some younger members starting out as volunteers/coaches within the club. The key to the club continuing for years to come is gaining new people and it is great that 4 of our younger members have taken their first steps.

Holly & Bethany

We are really pleased that both girls have joined in helping Jason to deliver the Soccer Tots sessions on a Saturday morning. Our Soccer Tots have always been popular and thanks to Jason coming back to lead these sessions we have seen increased numbers each week. This led to Jason needing helpers and Holly and Bethany both stepped up to help.

Jack & Shaun

Playing for our U17 squad whilst starting the world of college/apprenticeships wasn’t enough for these two. When the Roses section was formed last summer, both stepped forwards and helped Paul deliver the twice weekly training sessions. Jack and Shaun (under the supervision of Paul) now lead the sessions on a Monday evening for the U14 girls and are both currently doing their FA Level 1 qualification.

It is great to see them actually planning their session and delivering it with confidence. The players all respond to the lads and if they ever aren’t there the first question Paul gets is “Where’s Jack and Shaun?”. They are becoming Catterick Village’s next double act.

CLUB NEWS

History Making Girls

Our U16 Roses played their first ever match on Saturday 2nd March against Scotton Scorchers. The match and the whole experience was a real showcase for Catterick Village as the girls displayed the values and ethos of our junior football club with effort, enthusiasm, teamwork and fair play. Despite a scoreline that, according to the opposition coaches, was not a reflection on how well two fairly matched teams played, we’re super proud of our Roses.

Planning a strategy that ensures 19 players all got game time was a challenge but we were determined this should happen, given that this game was the first ever girls game in CVJFC history. It meant that the girls had to adapt to frequent changes in formation and playing partners. Every single girl played their part and it was pleasing to see things that we have practiced in training being played out all over the pitch. Communication on and off the field was superb and there was some lovely passages of passing play.

Our superb hosts were very complimentary on how we played and we have invited them back to our place for a return match on 4th May. 8 months of hard work, application, effort and enthusiasm has vindicated the club’s decision to form a girls section and our Roses have done us proud.

Changing rooms refurbishment

It is now 27 years since the pavilion build was completed and, along with many other items, the changing rooms have been desperately in need of some attention.

Thanks to a grant from the FA and the magnificent effort with the sleigh ride, the Sports Association have been able to fund the laying of non-slip, washable flooring in both changing rooms. The cost of the flooring is in the region of £2500 and, hopefully, this will now last many years and be of benefit to all the users.

The next project will be to carpet and decorate the main hall.

New Volunteers Welcome to help run and maintain the sports facilty

The Trustees and Management Committee of the Catterick Village Sports Association are always happy to welcome new volunteers who can spare a few hours a month to help run and maintain the facility that our Village sports teams use.

If you feel this is something that you would like to do, then please speak to any of the Trustees or to Bob, Jason, Daz, James or Ryan who will be happy to have a conversation with you and let you know when the next Committee meeting would be taking place .

The Catterick Village Sports Association (CVSA) is a charitable body responsible for the management and maintenance of the Sports Fields and Pavilion in Catterick Village.

The CVSA is made up of local junior and senior sports teams and volunteers from the local community.

The facility is used by the Cricket Club and the Junior Football Club whilst also having regular weekly use by Slimming World on Mondays and North Yorkshire Council for the Youth Club on Thursdays. A calendar of events along with details on how to hire the pavilion can be seen on the CVSA website

New Flooring freshens up the Sports Pavilion

The CVSA has recently planned new flooring to be installed inside the pavilion. The flooring will be installed in both of the changing rooms to enable players to use the facility to its full extent. With the help of volunteers we have stored all of the equipment from the showers into new locations so that now, should players wish to use the showers, they can do so knowing that they are also walking on the correct flooring to prevent slipping etc. The changing rooms will be locked for a period of 1 -2 weeks to allow the new flooring to cure properly.

The main hall of the pavilion is also getting new carpet tiles throughout. This will help the facility in a number of ways as it will be easier to clean and maintain feel warmer throughout the colder months less of an echo for when meetings are being held softer for when Jason brings the Soccer Tots inside for training during winter

Both the changing rooms and main hall have been part funded by the Football Foundation and the Locality funds, with the balance being funded by the CVSA. The CVSA will also be purchasing a carpet cleaner/hoover for the upkeep of the newly tiled main hall.

With the investment made in the flooring of the building we politely ask that there are NO FOOTBALL BOOTS or CRICKET SPIKES worn inside the pavilion. These should be removed prior to entering the building.

With the group now split into two age groups, our U16's numbers stand at 24 registered players, with an average of 20 turning up for our weekly winter training sessions. Training has been held at the artificial pitches at Wavell Road so, unlike match days, training has rarely been missed due to weather With the backlog of league fixtures it has proven difficult so far to arrange friendlies in advance of next season, but the girls made club history on 2nd March when they played their first ever game against Scotton Scorchers from Knaresborough (further information about this fixture is in the club news section).

While we await confirmation of further friendly fixture dates our girls are continuing with their efforts to develop and improve their football skills in their brand new bespoke training kits, sponsored by Pitman Training, Swale Scaffolding & Securefit Creations..

At the younger end of our Roses section, our lively and enthusiastic 11-14 year olds & Squad Girls continue to develop their football skills with weekly training at Richmond School. Coaches Jack & Shaun regularly put the girls through their paces with a mix of fun games, ball mastery exercises and drills designed to improve passing, movement and game awareness techniques. Numbers have remained steady with an average of 10 girls turning up regularly for training sessions and we are making a concerted effort to attract more players to enable a split for the 24/25 season into U15 & U13 squads.

The girls were delighted to receive their fantastic new training kits and are looking forward to wearing their new match kit sponsored by Just Leasing and The Plastic Box Shop as soon as we can arrange some friendly matches for them.

The ladies section continue to grow and gather pace and we have a large pool of players to rotate through playing. What was a difficult winter period for the squad due to the glorious English weather, the ladies found themselves with quite a few postponements and finding match days playable was difficult. Having managing to get a 4g pitch for matches this is no longer an issue and the games are coming thick and fast! As always the ladies are working hard on Tuesday training sessions and they’re continuing want to get better has seen us now training twice a week. The matches are always heavily contested and the players come away from each game knowing that even if the result has gone against them, they have left it all there and still come away with the positives in our first season.

We’ve now managed to start playing some players who are very new to football and have made their debut for not only CV Roses but football altogether, which in itself is a massive achievement for not only the players, but the squad and club as a whole.

As we started late in the league, we find ourselves playing catch up slightly. The squad, from April, will see them playing games midweek until the end of the season. So plenty of football still to be played and I know the players will be eager to get out on the pitch, putting their work in training into effect and show off their footballing ability.

Stop/Start Winter period sees fixtures now planned until May

As with most teams throughout the area, the recent weather has seen us encounter a phase of the season where we have had many training sessions and matches postponed due to the state of the grass pitches. This has resulted in the team now having fixtures scheduled through until the end of May.

Despite the postponed fixtures, the team has remained midtable for the season, although at one point we were in the top 3. Results have been mixed but when the boys get the ball down and play football they are one of the best teams in the league and this always leads to a more positive result.

Final phase of season also sees exams for U16 players

As we enter the final phase of games for the season we once again, as last season, see half of the squad start preparing for their exams at school.

Whilst the club continues to grow at the top ages this will now become the norm and we wish all of the players the best of luck with each exam that they sit.

The coaches will continue to hold the regular training sessions (weather permitting) to give the boys a break from their studying whilst also preparing for matches.

UNew players welcome as we prepare for an U18 team for the 2024/25 Season

As we approach the end of the current season, preparations start for the new 2024/25 season. New players are welcome to come along to join with the existing squad and give us a try for what will be the clubs first ever U18 team.

Players would need to be in year 12 or 13 from September 2024 and this would then hopefully lead to the creation of a men’s team in the village for the following 25/26 season which although there has been a men’s team before, they were always a separate team/club so this would be another first for CVJFC.

Before I give an update on the team, I would just like to say a big thank you to Rik for allowing me to help him out these last few years, and wish him and Rory all the best in their new challenges.

Shortly after the last newsletter we finally got a win. Against the team that got promoted with us we went back to the place where we had last had a victory. The Rossett Sports Centre 3G was home to a great game of football back in December. We had a hard fought match against Beckwithshaw Golds in which for the last 10 minutes we had to play with only 9 players. But in those last 10 minutes we managed to hold onto our 2 goal advantage with the game finishing 3-1 in our favour. The reverse of this fixture has been somewhat difficult to play with the weather continuing to be a major hindrance.

Next up we had a hard fought outing away at Knaresborough Celtic. Again we only had 11 players at this fixture and the opposition's ability to freshen up their team took its toll and it finished 7-0 to Knaresborough.

We then had to wait 6 weeks for another league game. We returned to the Rossett Sports Centre to play Beckwithshaw Blues this time round. This team had beaten us at home 6-0 earlier in the season so the final result of 3-2 is testament to how far the team have come on in recent months.

Unfortunately one of our players took an injury in this game and we wish Henry a speedy recovery to make the last few games of the season.

U 1 5

Last weekend (10/03) we played against Horsforth at home. Whilst it was great to get a game on our pitch the weather had played a major factor in this game with the pitch being quite heavy in places. This game would have been great for any neutrals on the sidelines with the village hitting the woodwork 4 times. However lady luck was not on our side today and Horsforth came out winners in the end 2-1.

Things are very positive within the U15s at the moment with the team finding goals again and also creating numerous chances.

We are still looking for a couple of players so if you're interested contact myself, Martin or one of the squad. Thanks, Guy

The new year has seen some encouraging displays from the team albeit with games being intermittent like a lot of the teams with the amount of postponements with the wet conditions. Individual players have started to adapt to new roles in the team as we set about making them more competitive after initially finding the step up in divisions difficult. After a difficult afternoon at Knaresborough in early January, the players responded with some good training sessions to come out 5-3 victors in a friendly match arranged at Darlington Spraire lads before 2 very tight games against Beckwithshaw Blues and Horsforth who scored a late winner to make it 2-1 after a host of chances were created and the woodwork struck on 4 occasions! We conclude our season with 2 home games against Beckwithshaw Golds and Knaresborough, plus an away day with Panal. Preparations will then begin for pre-season with the hope that we can make a couple of additions to the squad to help make next season a success. Best wishes,

U

“Teamwork”

We now have 21 Players registered, with a good Training Squad who attend every session Tuesday and Saturdays. Although we have Players from 4-5 Different Schools, they all combine as one TEAM when Training and Playing for Catterick Village. This Togetherness and Team Work really shines through when the Squad is Together with ALL Players supporting each other and helping in Training and Matches. This has helped ALL TEAM MEMBERS this year as we have had some results which haven’t gone our way, but our Team Spirit has enabled us to keep trying in every Training Session and Match improving all the time.

“Attitude, Attendance, Effort & Resilience”

Our Strength as a TEAM has always been achieved through hard work in training, teamwork in matches and by following our three Team Core Values. Attitude, Attendance and Effort. By following these core values, we have grown as a Team and everywhere we go and play we show these Values and represent our Players and Club in the best light. This Season has continued to be extremely challenging as a Coach, but I now believe we have added another Team Core Value to our Three making it Four.

The Players have showed this throughout the Season and how ever tough the Matches have been we’ve always exhibited the new Fourth Team Core Value. We have shown Resilience and have fought for every Tackle, Shot, Save, Goal and Match.

U 1 4

“Adaptability 4 4 2 to 4 5 1”

With the standard of football in this League being so high we’ve had to adapt to different tactics and formations to compete with Teams in the A League. We’ve changed formation and tactics, but this has taken a lot of effort in Training from ALL Players and Coaches but is rewarding from my perspective to see improvements in everyone.

These changes have challenged the Players as individuals and as a Team but this ability to adapt to changes and challenges will enable them to grow as People helping them not only on the Football Field but in life. This Adaptability in Matches combined with our solid base of Hard Work and Effect in Training will enable us to grow as a TEAM and has already shown in our most recent Results.

“Hard work & Effort WINS Football Matches”

The Players on my TEAM are probably sick of these words but I really, really believe they are true. I think that we get back in Matches the work we put into Training, the hard work and effort in Training reflects in the Matches. Our Squad has worked extremely hard in training adapting to the new Formation and Tactics and the effort the whole squad have put into every minute of every match has enabled us to improve, compete with Teams and get points in our last Match. We WON our last Away Match vs Knaresbrough Celtics and although the journey is more important than the destination it was very, very rewarding as a Coach to see the smiles and pride on the faces of ALL our Squad and Parents at the end of the Match.

Hard Work and Effort really does WIN Football Matches.

U 1 4

What a first half of the season this has been.

As a coach I could not have asked for more determination / effort and sheer hard work. The U13`s have shown so much team effort, within the first half of the season and it proves it`s working with the position we are in the league. We are top of the table by 5 clear points with a game in hand. This just shows the effort & hard work the U13`s have put in to pre-season training and training Tuesday`s & Friday`s. We have worked really hard on positioning / team work / movement off & on the ball, and so on.

As a coach I am seeing young boys turn into young men & young girl`s turn into young lady`s, which is amazing to see. The complete team have come on so much since last season, they are talking to each other / correcting each other / advising each other and most of all been there for each other. We have had some disappointing times regarding the wet weather meaning we can’t play, but apart from that we are looking strong as a squad.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, for bringing them to training every week. Traveling to away games, which are not just around the corner. Also for replying back to the hundreds of WhatsApp messages we put on the group.

U 1 3

NEVER SAY DIE

We have had another tough quarter to the season.

We have our backs to the wall and continue to fight to get the W but it’s just not quite there yet with minimal margins. The great thing about this is the kids are still coming off the field with smiles on their faces and continuing to battle to get where they want to be.

For every negative in a game there is always double the positives. We are still watching them grow and develop on and off the field.

Coaching isn’t only about football for me, it’s about life lessons and learning never to throw in the towel no matter the situation and our squad has that.

We have lost a few players and gained a few but we are still heading in the right direction.

I believe we will excel when we get to 11 a side and kick on with smiles and determination.

The results this season also haven't gone our way as I myself made an error entering us in two leagues to try and develop both new and old players. This has caused fatigue and injuries to which has a knock on effect from Saturday to Sunday.

Overall we are proud to have this great bunch of boys and girls represent the club.

Rapid development and steep learning curve - all players have risen to the challenge!

It has been a challenging first season for the U11s, having moved into the Harrogate & District Junior Football League B. It has been a genuine step up for the whole squad, with each team we face for the first time an unknown quantity.

Initially matches were running away from us and lessons hard learnt. Testament to the whole squad though, they have grown and developed through these experiences with real maturity. The team are now consistently competitive in all matches and performing to a high standard, with intensity and commitment. This weekend (17 March) they deservedly got their first away League win of the season too - well done!

Paul and I continue to strive to offer quality game time, picking limited match day squads to ensure that each player gets good minutes on the pitch and contributes to the game, whilst not disrupting the rhythm or balance of the team too greatly - it remains an imperfect art!

Thank you to all the player’s parents and guardians for continuing to support us. Their positive match day support, excellent communication and commitment to training/friendlies is a huge factor in the development we have witnessed in the team performances and squad as a whole.

Jaguars & Panthers as one

In January the Under 10 coaches decided to bring both the Jaguars and Panthers back together all in aid of preparation for the transition to next season in the under 11 age group, the groundwork going in early. This is a significant jump for the boys as we transition from 7 aside to 9 aside with the pitch increasing in size from 60x40 yards to 80x50 yards. All coaches are looking forward to the challenge ahead of teaching our amazing players the offside rule as this will be introduced next season.

The typical North Yorkshire weather has really affected our recent league campaign with most games sadly postponed, however the safety of our players is always the foremost priority.

As a collective we have trained as one squad since the turn of the year, both sets have players have adapted to this extremely well. The comradery amongst the players is a joy to watch and a delight to coach week in week out. All players are working hard to help each other develop their football skills and learning from each other.

We have concentrated most of our recent training sessions around our passing game, the boys have continued to work on the importance of passing and moving to allow the ball to do the work for them. The new style as been seen in recent weeks with the boys working hard to play up the pitch- and out from the back.

Rain, rain, go away…………..

Both Under 9’s teams have continued to enjoy their seasons playing 7-a-side in their respective leagues. The Panthers have been playing some great football in the Hambleton & Richmondshire Junior Football League and went on a six game winning run and are in the quarter final of the league cup. With the prospect of a Semi-Final on the horizon, the team have been chomping at the bit to get the quarter final played but the game has fallen foul to the weather on three occasions!! We are hopeful the game will be played before the end of March!! Training has been going very well with a particular focus on shooting and being comfortable with the ball at their feet.

The Jaguars have continued to battle their way through their fixtures playing a year up against U10’s in the Harrogate & District Football League. Having come up against some strong teams, the team has shown great character and footballing skills and come up with some outstanding results. We were particularly proud of them during a fixture in February when the visiting team resorted to constant fouling, off the ball incidents, potty mouth swearing and general poor behaviour. The Jaguars just rolled their sleeves up and continued to play football with calm heads. Their attitude and effort were rewarded with some very good goals and sealing the win. Despite the other team’s resistance to shaking hands, all of our team went over to the visitors to shake their hands and show great sportsmanship.

Unfortunately, we have to say goodbye to one of Panthers at the end of March. Alfie Rodgers is leaving as his family are moving away. We wish Alfie all the best in his new home and his footballing journey elsewhere.

Both teams have plenty of fixtures still to play and hope to enter a couple of tournaments when the season is completed.

After the Xmas break, the U8 squad move into a period of futsal indoors at Richmond School Still working hard in training to continually improve and try new things, the futsal gave the players a unique opportunity to try these practices in a more congested environment, with the added task of using a heavier indoor football. This was something the players grasp with relative ease and the development week to week both indoor and outdoors was wonderful to see. During the futsal we moved to 3 smaller teams to allow the players more game time, with Guy once again stepping in to assist and come with even more passion from the side lines!! All 3 teams did really well, only losing one game throughout (this being to another CVJFC team :) ) All teams made it through to the “champions league” with one of the teams narrowly being beaten in the finals! A good period of development the players can take forward to the remainder of the season. As we move outdoors we continue with our games in the league and have the jaguars squad into the semi-finals of the cup

As always we thank our supporters who come out every week to support the players in training and matches.

Continued rise in Soccer Tots attendance leads to addition of new Assistant Coaches

Great to have our Tots section seeing increased uptake week on week with a great mixture of boys and girls coming along aged 2-4 yrs old to learn their first basic football skills whilst having a great time and being fed plenty of sweets when their concentration slips

Uptake has been so good we've had to increase the coaching team by bringing in coach JJT's daughter Holly and our u14's coach Lee Wilkinson's daughter Bethany. Holly is using her time with us to help with her Duke of Edinburgh Award qualification.

EMMY - FOOTBALL PLAYER, REFEREE AND CAMPAIGNER FOR THE GIRLS’ GAME

Team sport is a significant part of the lives of many of Richmond School’s students, both in PE lessons, practices and matches for school teams as well as participation in local, county and sometimes national squads Emmy, Year 10 student at Richmond School, is a fantastic example of this but she’s taken it one step further by recently becoming the first female FA qualified football referee from Richmondshire She’s also applied to become a Barclays Game Changer - a high profile role that involves the support and promotion of girls’ football in schools.

We caught up with Emmy recently to ask her about her footballing journey and why on earth someone would want to become a referee!

So, Emmy, go back to the beginning - where did your love of football start?

E: I’ve always loved sport but football started when I was about four or five and my grandad gave me a Norwich kit I just wanted to play! I joined Richmond Town girls’ team, but that soon folded because there were so few players. I played in a few boys’ teams but didn’t really enjoy it. Luckily Richmond Town started a girls’ team againthey haven’t stopped and have done really good things - I’ve played for them since then.

OK, what about your football now - what age group, what teams, what competitions?

E: I play in the U17 team at Richmond Town - a year above my age. We play in the North Riding League, playing teams from Middlesbrough and the Sunderland area. We’ve been really successful, winning many cup and league trophies over the past few years We’re one of the best teams in the area, though there is a team called Boro Rangers. Most finals are us against them! I also play for Catterick Village Roses, who are a fairly new side but I am very excited to see where we go.

What about football at school? Football is very popular at Richmond School - how is girls’ football doing?

E: It’s definitely on its way up. We have teams across all the year groups, which is something we didn’t have in the past. Numbers are still quite low sometimes, so we need to push more How? I think we need to work that out - that’s going to be part of my role as a Barclays Game Changer. I work quite closely with Ellen Atkinson, our Girls' Football Development Coordinator. One of the issues is that we have quite a wide range of abilities.

Extra Curricular News

Even in Year 7 some students have played for years and others are just starting out. If we had more players it would make things easier from a coaching point of view. Now, on to refereeing. Who on earth would want to be a football referee?!

E: That’s what everyone says!

Ever since I’ve watched football, especially Leeds matches with my dad, I’ve always noticed there aren’t any female officials. Why? I’m quite aware of issues in the world, particularly when it comes to equal opportunities and this just made me want to be a ref - from the age of seven or eight. It’s quite hard to get into - I’ve been on a waiting list for a long while..

So, you must have gained quite a bit of refereeing experience before the FA qualification you’ve recently obtained? How has the experience been?

E: Yes I’m a ref for Richmond Town and referee games regularly - from U9 to U14s I get comments from the players but mainly from the parents and coaches on the sidelines. It’s understandable. Most of them have never seen a female ref, so maybe they would doubt me But I really enjoy being a referee for Richmond Town What’s your reaction to these comments - how do they make you feel?

E: Well, as the ref, I’m in charge! The players are only showing themselves up making comments and if it goes too far I can send them off. Lots of teams are bringing in sanctions systems now. If anyone says anything rude or disrespectful, it’s an automatic game ban Those teams are much nicer to referee - Catterick Village is a good example So you can really feel the difference these sanction systems make?

E: Definitely. Players question the ref rather than blaming them. I can have a chat with players from these teams and explain my decisions, whereas with other teams it’s more of a battle.

Ok, so let's move on to the course you did recently. Tell us a bit about that.

E: I was extremely nervous going into that room. I was the only girl and all the others were boys who were older than me, but not adults. It was intimidating but I really wanted this qualification and I just threw myself at it. Some people just sat at the back of the room and didn’t get involved at all - I think I passed very well.

Excellent! That’s exactly how to deal with a situation like that. Get yourself noticed! How was the course structured - how long did it take?

E: There were three online modules which took ages, then this in-person training at Richmond School Pavillion which took two full days and an afternoon. There was some theory - the offside rule, how to card players properly, how to log fouls etc Then there were the practical sessions - we spent almost half a day learning how to blow the whistle! We spent another half day learning all the different arm signals. Then there was assistant refereeing - I actually find that harder than refereeing, especially when calling offside - everyone looks at the assistant referee for an offside! What about the assessment, how did that work?

Extra Curricular News

E: It was continuous assessment, there wasn’t an exam. The instructors had been observing us all the way through. We were told whether we’d passed at the end - not everyone did At the end we all played a game and took it in turns to referee It was all boys and they were all older than me, but I felt really confident. I really felt ready to go out and ref games after that!

So, what about the future - what are your plans? Mrs. Carruthers mentioned that you maybe hadn’t had many really strong female role models - I guess that Rebecca Welch, the first female to referee a Premier League game might be one?

E: Yes, kind of, and I have thought about that. I’m not sure whether I want to take refereeing further, but if I do, I want to referee a Premier League game when I’m younger than she was!

I’d also like to get into coaching - there are very few female football coaches around at the moment.

I’d like to give the women’s game more of a push in school, like I mentioned before. But also we need to talk about it more and raise its profile. When the men’s World Cup was on some of the games were shown in classes but when I asked if we could watch the Lioness’s games at the Euros it was a no. In fact I didn’t hear our victory mentioned at all!

What about the longer term future?

E: I’m not sure about a career in sport, though I have been given some opportunities in the last few weeks. I’ve started to train with Richmond Town Ladies first team and train with Hartlepool United. I am also hoping to train / play with Spennymoor in the summer pre-season. These are all semi-professional teams playing in the highest league in the north - Spennymoor are top of this league.

And away from sport - how’s school going and what are your academic goals?

E: School’s going really well. I would eventually like to go into engineering or sustainable engineering I’m going to an architect for my work experience so I can hopefully learn something from that. I’ve also thought about becoming a pilot. I’ve been lucky enough to travel quite a bit and can only remember seeing a female pilot once or twice

Lots of possibilities! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us, Emmy. We wish you all the very best with your football, your refereeing, your role as a Barclays Game Changer and your studies and academic future. I’m sure we’ll be talking to you again soon to report on more of your progress and success.

CVJFC Savings Accounts with Darlington Credit Union

Members of the clubs Commercial team and Management Committee are currently looking into a proposal from Darlington Credit Union which would introduce savings accounts for members, family and friends to use. The accounts would be instant access savings accounts and would have unlimited transactions whilst offering rewards/incentives for you to save. These would provide a great way of starting to save now before it is your squads turn to have European Trip, as witnessed last year with our then Under 16s going to Spain to compete in the Costa Daurada Cup.

Darlington Credit Union is a community financial co-operative formed in 2009 following the merger of 4 smaller credit unions. Since then DCU have grown to serve the whole of the North East today.

DCU are...a not-for-profit, co-operative community organisation offering a secure and ethical place for depositing savings whilst also being an affordable and fair lender and an educator.

Full details of this partnership will hopefully be announced soon.
