FOREWORD

It is a pleasure to present the Spring edition of the Catterick Village Junior Football Club Newsletter. It feels like only moments ago we were publishing the first edition at the start of this year. However, the club has been bold in its ambitions and achieved so much in that time, as you will see in the pages that follow. I am proud of everyone involved with these achievements from across the club: players, guardians, coaches and volunteers from across the local community; my thanks to you all.

I must single out two great achievements for this edition: the U16?s incredible participation in the Costa Daurada Cup (a club first) and the recognition of Bob and Ryan.

You simply must read the features that follow on the Costa Daurada Cup - the U16s have surpassed all expectations and shown what can be achieved through hard work and team spirit. I hope that this will inspire the current younger squads across the club to continue this legacy, to represent the club overseas at U16 level What an experience!

Speaking of legacies, Bob Thornton has been pivotal to the establishment, growth and success of CVJFCfor generations of players and continues to provide time and mentoring to the club?s personnel. It is no understatement to say that Ryan Barker is at the heart of day to day running of the club and offers his time to help coaches, players and parents from across the whole club I am delighted to report that they were both rightly recognised by the FA, through their #ForTheLoveOfTheGame awards, more details of which can be found in the pages that follow CVJFCare proud and fortunate to have them both dedicated to the club?s success

I would like to welcome Babcock as a new club sponsor also, broadening our links with local and national businesses, fundamental to our efforts to modernise and professionalise all aspects of the club, such as uniform Match Day Kits.

FOREWORD

Football continues to prosper across the whole club thanks to the hard work of our volunteers. Some other highlights you will find in this edition are:

- Important CWO message

- More success with the club?s young, homegrown Referees initiative with, U16s (Jack and Harry) achieving their Level 7

- Danny Marquiss Football Academy announces partnership for delivery at Catterick Village

- Fund raising initiatives from players and squads.

It is my duty to highlight an area of real concern that I implore you all to help with, regardless of your position in our club community Welfare of all at our club is of paramount importance to the Management Committee and I, take note of the clear rules on use of the field for parking only, appropriate speed whilst travelling along the track and using the car park when making ?drop offs? . If this continues to be ignored, we may have to suspend access to the field for training and match days This would also likely result in the suspension of footballing activities across all ages too. Please help by playing your part in preventing this and advocate the rules to others

As many of us have been contemplating de-icing the car on Saturday mornings, Tracey Hanratty and family have already arrived at the Sports Fields, to set up the Pavilion and provide us all with hot drinks and energy boosting options from the tuck shop (a popular post-training option with all the kids) Thank you for giving up your weekend family time to keep us all from freezing whilst on the sidelines!

Recognition and thanks to Paul Hankin and Darren Rhodes for producing this excellent second edition of the CVJFCNewsletter which I hope you will all enjoy

Finally, a reminder that this community club is always open to ideas and support from you all and if you wish to get involved/support any aspect please contact us:

Bob Thornt on & Ryan Barker m ake t he NRCFA Roll of Honour

We are proud to highlight the well deserved recognition of both Bob Thornton and Ryan Barker who have been awarded an NRCFA #fortheloveofthegame award.

Thank you both for all you have done and selflessly continue to do for CVJFCand grassroots football as a whole.

Bob has been involved with CVJFCfor a number of years as a coach, Chair and Welfare Officer. Still seen at the sports fields on a Saturday during training, Bob is always there to offer invaluable support and advice to the younger volunteers within the club whenever they need it.

Ryan hasn't quite been at the club as long as Bob (LOL) but he continues to assist with the day to day running of the club across all age groups. From marking out pitches to organising referees for matches He constantly follows and promotes the club ethos of 'inclusivity for all regardless of gender or ability' He just needs to learn how to park.

Both Bob and Ryan received a recognition letter from Steven Wade, Chief Executive of North Riding County Football Association.

LEARN HOW TO SAVE A LIFE WITH REVIVR

Thousands of foot ball players, coaches, referees, parent s and support ers across t he Nort h Riding area of Yorkshire are being urged t o learn CPR w it h a free innovat ive app w hich t eaches t he vit al skill in just 15 m inut es.

The ambitious plan has been launched by North Riding FA, whose CEO Steven Wade said he hoped enough people to ?fill Middlesbrough FC?s stadium?would learn the lifesaving skill using the British Heart Foundation's tool RevivR

Interest in learning CPRspiked following the high profile cardiac arrest of Christian Eriksen on the pitch at the Euros in 2021, which led to a third of fans saying they investigated CPRtraining and nine in ten were keen to learn it, according to a BHFsurvey.*

The survey also revealed that 69%of fans were more likely to learn CPRif their club sign-posted it

Steven said Christian Eriksen?s collapse was one of the inspirations for rolling RevivRout across the local footballing community, including all clubs and teams in the North Riding FA area. As well as players, the scheme will target everyone associated with a club, from coaches through to parents

There are more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year in the UK, but the survival rate is less than one in ten. The early and effective use of CPR and a defibrillator can more than double the chances of survival in some cases RevivRteaches you how to recognise a cardiac arrest, gives feedback on chest compressions and outlines the correct steps of defibrillator use, giving anyone the confidence to step in and save a life in the event of the ultimate medical emergency

?The BHFapproached us about their app at the same time as we were thinking about our new health and wellbeing strategy, so the timing was perfect,?said Steven

?There was a lot of publicity around Christian Eriksen during the Euros and we felt this was the perfect opportunity to use football to promote the importance

of learning this skill, giving people the basic knowledge and confidence to know what to do should an emergency arise.?

Steven said there were about 250 clubs and 1,300 teams across the North Riding FA area, with the ages of players ranging from children of six up to people playing walking football in their 70s. By adding in coaches, referees, volunteers, parents and other supporters, he believed they had the potential to reach enough people to fill Middlesbrough?s stadium

The information will be cascaded down through newsletters, roadshows, social media and other methods.

?I?ve tried RevivRmyself already and it?s excellent, I was really impressed with it,? added Steven ?It was really easy to follow and I told my staff afterwards that it was the best 15 minutes I had spent all week.

?And I think that?s the key to it ? it?s not just easy, it?s quick. So quick in fact, you could learn how to save a life in the half time period of a football match!?

BHFFundraising Manager for North Yorkshire Leya Baksh said: ?Well done to North Riding FA for taking this initiative, it?s brilliant to hear they are planning to reach so many people with our innovative RevivRtool

?CPRtranscends football rivalries and truly is a gamechanger - imagine if every football fan in the UK learned CPRvia our free online app RevivR, that would be millions more people with the skills and confidence to save a life.?

CVJFC Newly Qualified Referees

Presented With Level 7 Certificates

Jack Hankin & Harry Cooper have both been presented with their Level 7 Referee Qualification by the North Riding County Football Association

The two U16 squad members achieved their qualification last Summer and have been busy officiating CVJFChome fixtures for our U9 up to U14 squads

The presentation was held at Middlesbrough?s Riverside Stadium and the guest list of speakers included Dan Meeson, FA Head of RefereeingTechnical & Development, and Ed Duckworth, FA National Referee Manager.

Presentation of their certificates followed a break the ice quiz, and Q&A session with current referees who are working between Levels 7 to 3. But they didn? t come away with just certificates.

Among the freebie FA goodies, the boys were also successful in a prize draw with Harry winning the main prize of a brand new Nike Referee kit for the 2023/24 season, and Jack winning a box of chocolates and FA Organiser!

The North Riding County FA regularly run Referee Training Courses throughout the year so if you have considered becoming a referee or would like to find out more, you can enquire about the next set of courses, which will take place from August 2023.

of season st art s

With the first phase of the season coming to a close, our U15/16 squad found themselves sat 7th in the league table. Moving into phase 2 of the Harrogate season., the squad have been placed in the B division where they will be able to share the competitive nature that they have developed on a weekly basis against teams of a similar ability. Fixtures go all the way to late May so there is still plenty of football for the boys to enjoy.

Cost a Daurada Cup - Foot ball in t he Sun and t he creat ion of a club legacy!

An early 5:30am start on Saturday 1st April saw the U15/16 squad, coaching staff and parents set off to Spain for the Costa Daurada Cup. This was a first for the club to attend an International tournament and the boys represented both club and country impeccably. The tournament and the way the whole trip was organised was excellent and the boys did a lot better than we expected. Our aim was to give them a once in a lifetime experience that they could make memories and form lifelong bonds with their team mates The results didn't really matter as we knew we were up against some of the world's top academies and professional clubs, and as long as we showed a good account of ourselves we would be happy.

6

It turned out better than expected with the boys progressing to the Qtr Finals where they lost to the eventual winners of the tournament. Take a look at the dedicated write up later in this newsletter and keep an eye out for the upcoming souvenir programme that will be released containing match reports, images from the trip and the infamous player bio's.

U14 St ill Unbeat en

The U14's have continued playing some really good football since the last newsletter, still remaining unbeaten so far We have two games left to finish this season off with our last game against our closest rivals to decide the league.

The team have displayed themselves on the field this season that would make anyone proud letting their football do the talking. The team seem to be enjoying themselves this year, and as a squad they are becoming a really good group of young lads, An absolute pleasure to coach and be a part of.

Outside of the club I have had a few of the boys represent Richmond School and become Year 9 area Champions.

We look forward to start fundraising, as the boys have been speaking to the U16's and are buzzing for when its our turn to go in the 25/26 season.

?At t it ude, At t endance, Effort ?

The CVJFCUnder 13s are currently in 2nd position in the Harrogate and District U13s B League. This has been achieved through hard work in training, teamwork in matches and by following our three Team Core Values Attitude, Attendance and Effort. By following these core values, we have grown as a Team and the Results are now reflecting the effort and attitude Squad Players show at our CVJFCTraining Sessions. This is extremely rewarding as a coach to see the whole Squad not only improving as Football Players but also as people.

?Unbeat en at Hom e?

This season we have taken over the CVJFCAway dressing room for the Under 13s HOMEMatches at CVJFC. This was designed to build team spirit, friendships and further enhance the overall match day experience. This has been a great motivation for the Team as we have remained Unbeaten at Home in the League for the complete Season

We have now played our Final League Home Game finishing the Season with 8 Wins and 1 Draw with a Goal Difference of +19 Goals whilst playing at CVJFC

U 1 3

?Im provem ent ?

The League Table shows how much we?ve improved against other Teams but as a Coach I find greater reward in the improvement the Individual players have made against themselves The Results matter as it shows the hard work and effort the Players are putting into Training is working and this is satisfying for both the Players and Coaches at CVJFC Although our Team Target is Promotion to Division 1 this year, I believe that we will have had a successful Season if our Players finish the Season as better footballers and people than they started it

Personal not e from Paul

Since I arrived back in August, at Catterick Village JFC, they have opened their arms to me and my family which is what this club is about, family. I was then blessed to help out coach throughout this season with the U11's who have done fantastically well this season and long may it continue.

The club have also helped and supported me through my next steps in coaching and continue to help me develop myself and the teams.

This club is more than just a junior football club. It's a place where you can make friendships for life and take time out from day to day life and have that one thing that brings families together and enjoy on a Saturday and Sunday.

Children develop life skills here through sport and being active and for me that's what it's all about and the club.

Thanks Paul

RESPECT, ATTITUDE, EFFORT & PRIDE

This quarter has seen the U10s consolidate their development form across their 7 a side football journey, ahead of the the transition to 9 a side football next season. With a packed fixture calendar since the last newsletter, most Saturdays have seen us playing League and Development matches, offering playing time to all players across the squad

The focus has remained on playing with freedom and expressing themselves on the pitch, whilst working within a team formation and structure The quality of football has been outstanding and very enjoyable to watch. The players have shown themselves to be adaptable to a number of formations and positions whilst demonstrating an ever maturing understanding of the game.

Recognising this maturity we have updated the qualities that all players are striving to emulate by introducing a new Trainer of the Week Trophy

The trophy, proudly held below by Stan, is engraved with ?RESPECT, ATTITUDE, EFFORT & PRIDE? .

Through these qualities the players are achieving their potential not only as footballers but as well-rounded individuals too. They all seem highly motivated on a weekly basis and full of pride when awarded the trophy. Well done to all of the players in this regard.

I would like to personally shout out the tireless and unsung efforts of Paul Hanratty over the last 24 months, who has administered the squad, delivered training and fostered our philosophy in all the players do John Drury has, and continues to, bring the fun factor to all of the kid?s football activities which is invaluable and important - we are all here to enjoy our football and have fun after all. Thanks gentlemen, from the whole squad and I!

We are all excited for the transition to U11 and 9 a side football. We plan to use the next few months to train, play friendly matches and tournaments/festivals to expose the players to this new format (including offsides!) and gain valuable experience ahead of the 23/24 season

U9 Jaguars To Defend Cup

The CVJFCU9 Jaguars team are now coming towards the end of a highly enjoyable and successful season, as a team they have been displaying all of the clubs values and ethos and are an absolute joy to coach

With regards to training, we?ve been working on a number of different things to try and develop our individual skills and also our team play, these training drills include: spacial awareness, control/passing/movement shielding the ball and individual ball work, all being conducted in a way that the whole squad get the most out of the sessions but while keeping a smile on their faces and injecting a fun side to everything we do.

All this is reflecting on the pitch on a Saturday morning with the whole team putting in some amazing displays, which has seen us reaching the final of the U9s cup competition which we are defending from our previous season at U8s.

Watching the whole squad on a weekly basis with smiles on their faces and seeing the progress that each individual is making really is phenomenal and it?s an honour to be part of their junior football journey. This team goes from strength to strength and the togetherness they show is brilliant to see.

We?re looking forward to carrying this on throughout the rest of the season and into the next season as U10s. Martin Adams - Coach.

U9 Pant hers Coach Proud

The under 9 Panthers squad have enjoyed a great period since the last newsletter. The boys have trained so hard on improving all the basic aspects of their game, this has allowed us to train on more advanced drills and the boys understanding has come on leaps and bounds.

On the field the boys have been on fire, winning 6, drawing 1 and only 1 defeat, the highlight for the boys was the victory in the cup semi final. All the boys are immensely proud of themselves for reaching the cup final, as is their coach Ross Fingers crossed for the final, good luck Panthers.

The boys are looking forward to a team day out once the season is completed, also taking part in a 5K sponsored run to raise money for team tracksuits.

The U8?s are well into Phase 3 with only a couple of fixtures remaining and then a league tournament in May

There is no league table at our age group but both teams have been very competitive in all of our fixtures and continue to improve week on week. Training has continued on Tuesday nights and it?s great to back in the village on the lighter evenings and progressively better weather!! We are continuing to focus on ball mastery and passing & moving in to space.

The kids all seem to enjoy the matches at the weekend and it?s been great to see the things we have been working on in training being taken in to the game situation

Training will carry on training throughout the summer months but have some time off to give everyone a rest We will also have some friendlies arranged in preparation for the move up to U9?s football.

The weekly trophy continues to be very popular and it?s great to see the children trying their best to take it home!

Our U8's look forw ard t o successfully com plet ing t he season before t heir m ove up t o U9's Foot ball

U7's happy t o be back in t he village and a new coach added t o t he squad

As we moved back onto the grass pitches from phase 2 and the indoor football, it was evident that the kids had missed playing outdoors. Relishing in the chance to once again play in the bigger goal and practice their new slide tackles

We welcomed a new coach in Jason to our team and he quickly took charge of the Panthers team. We quickly picked up from where we left off, from both indoors and outdoors, with great performances in training and on match days.

As we approach the end of our playing season it great to see what we are working on in training is being put into match situations and I believe the team is relishing the opportunity to move up an age group and continue in their development.

As a coaching team we would like to thank all the parents for there continued support throughout the season. Also a special mention to Guy and Mark for stepping into a coaching role when Jason or myself have been unavailable, Craig for refereeing the majority of the Jaguars games and The Performance Culture for sponsoring our new rain jackets. Keep up the hard work!

BEAU'S FUNDRAISER FOR LITTLE PRINCESS TRUST

A member of our U10 squad has taken on a brilliant charitable cause to support the Little Princess Trust. CVJFCare always delighted to support and raise the profile of brilliant charitable causes such as this, especially one being led by one of our own young players.

After watching a programme in lockdown showing what families go through when a child is living through a cancer diagnosis, Beau decided to grow his hair and donate it so it could be used to make a wig for a child with cancer.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or to other conditions such as Alopecia.

The trust relies solely on the generosity of its wonderful supporters who help the charity give Hair & Hope to so many children and young people with cancer each year.

With the original fundraising target set at £500, Beau has managed to raise £1682 to date

Well done Beau, your club is extremely proud of you!

As the date for the Spain trip neared for our U16 squad, our brilliant parent volunteers were busy with their continued efforts to ensure sufficient funds for the boys to go away with. Emily Towers, who's son Marcus plays for the team, organised an afternoon cream teas event at Colburn Village Hall.

Along with the delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes on offer, a raffle and tombola added to the afternoon with some fantastic prizes available.

With the help of some of the squad, and the eager taste buds of coaches, parents and the local community, the event was a huge success, raising a significant amount towards the cost of the Nou Camp visit that was planned as part of the trip.

"As his Food teacher, I have had the pleasure of watching Joe's creative cooking skills develop fantastically, particularly over the last year. Joe works in a pub, The Greyhound Inn at Hackforth, where he started by washing dishes and lending a hand in making desserts Joe now cooks more often at the pub as well as researching new dishes, which the pub has since added to the menu. It is exciting to watch Joe's Food knowledge and skills develop and I can't wait to see what he cooks next!"

Cost a Daurada Cup w hole club Present at ion (Dat e t o be confirm ed)

Following the successful trip to Spain for our current U16 squad, Rik asked Daz and Paul if they could present to his U14 squad details of how they raised money towards the trip, how the booking process was managed and to feedback what they did whilst in resort. Daz and Paul have both agreed to this and will communicate with Rik to arrange a date for this to take place

This will then be opened up to the whole club so anyone can attend and see and hear first hand what an amazing opportunity this club is looking at providing for future U16 squads They will hopefully have a few parents that attended the trip also at the presentation, along with some of the squad, so people can hear from all sides.

CVJFC U15/ 16 squad travels to Spain to compete in the Costa Daurada Cup!!

On April 1st, our U15/16 players and coaches, along with some of their family members, travelled to Salou in Spain to take part in the Costa Daurada Cup. Staying at Cambrils Park Resort and playing their matches at Mediterranean Sport Village (Futbol Salou), the squad would be competing alongside teams from across the globe.

The annual tournament is one of the largest in Europe and this year consisted of 103 boys teams, and 48 girls teams of varying age groups from countries including America, Canada, Spain, Sweden, England, Mali, Senegal, Mexico, Japan, Cyprus, Ireland etc. The majority of the teams that enter are either professional elite academies or affiliated to a professional football club. Clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Queens Park Rangers had representative teams in the competition, so we didn't have high expectations for a grassroots club based in a small village in the North of England!

The idea was always to give the boys an experience of a lifetime after giving service to the club from the age of 7 up to 16, in the knowledge that many might not be with us next year when they go to college or enter the world of work. As long as they showed a good account of themselves the results didn't matter, but the team exceeded all expectations. We also wanted to create a legacy within the club so that every future U16 team had a chance to experience a European tournament too.

The boys were impeccable both in their conduct and play and represented both our club (and country for that matter) in the highest manner. We were even the flag bearers at the head of the England group of teams in procession during the opening ceremony with other elite teams, including QPRbehind us Catterick Village Junior Football Club - Pride of Yorkshire indeed!

After drawing our first group match against San Marcial, we won our second against Salou before suffering our first defeat against American Elite Academy and Football Scouting organisation, Futstar/XRSoccer.

We had finished second in our group Official Costa Daurada Cup imageof Jack(vFutstar)

Thanks to Mark from Rondo Travel for everything that he did to make the trip a success for all who attended.

against some of the best academies in the world and would now meet CF Martorell in the quarter finals, a club who's senior team plays in the sixth tier of the Spanish Football League. Unfortunately, some dubious refereeing decisions went against us and despite playing very well we were knocked out of the competition 3-0

What we have taken from the tournament is that as a club, Catterick Village JFCare doing things right and are developing our players into exceptional young men. As well as the way in which they conducted themselves throughout the whole week, mixing with other European teams, and remaining upbeat at all times, they played as a team, stuck by each other and proved that as long as they displayed mutual support and trust in their teammates, they could compete with the best. The entire trip has surpassed any preconceived expectations we may have had and would recommend the experience to anyone, so much so that we are now looking into the possibility of our team returning in 2 years time to compete as u18's alongside our u16's (currently u14's).

Whilst there, the boys roomed together, the whole party ate together at the same meal times and everyone spent downtime together with their family and friends. All of this was part of the overall vision to offer the boys a trip of a lifetime whilst making it as much of a team bonding occasion as possible, giving them endless memories and stories to tell once back home.

Outside of the football tournament, one of the highlights for the squad was a trip to Barcelona to take in the Nou Camp stadium and museum tour. Luckily for the boys, they got to see the stadium before Barcelona move out at the end of the current 2022/23 season for renovation works to begin Hopefully the boys will return in the future so they can then see the new and improved Camp Nou.

Since returning home we have distributed a form to collect feedback on the trip so this can be shared throughout the club. Players and Parents were asked to comment on the resort, travel, football facility and the trip as a whole, along with their highlights. Below is some of the feedback and highlights received

Throughout the whole process of getting our lads to Spain, the driving force behind everything from fundraising to arriving in Salou has been Darren Rhodes.

In recognition of everything that he's done for both the trip and the club as a whole, the boys made a special presentation to him following their training session held after arriving in Spain on the Sunday evening.

During the season the squad had held a fines system where players were punished for dirty boots, arriving late etc with the monies collected by Fin. Despite Daz telling Fin that the money was to be spent on the squad for anything they wanted to help with the bus journey to Spain, the boys opted to use that money to help purchase the framed shirt Further proof of what has been achieved with this group of players over the past few years and the adults that they are becoming.

All Daz has to do now is work out where it goes at home!!

Congrat ulat ions t o all involved w it h t he unprecedent ed success of t he U16's Cost a Daurada Cup t rip.

CVJFCU16s went over to Spain with no expectations of winning, but with an aim of giving the players an experience of a lifetime: football, sunshine, making memories and bonds with teammates. A small village in North Yorkshire taking on academy teams from all over the world!

Having done themselves proud they earned the right to progress out of the group and onto the quarter finals. A 3-0 loss in the Qtr finals ended their football journey through the tournament, but at no point did they look out of their depth, in any sense.

It just shows that success in Junior football is not about winning. Individuals can create a team which is greater than the sum of its parts, thanks to ethos and team spirit. What an incredible experience for these young players and one that will bond them for a lifetime.

I am sure they will be glad to get back to playing 'proper' football in the rain on a bobbly pitch though!

They have all represented the club and themselves with maturity and professionalism, both on and off the pitch They deserve so much credit for this and their efforts have been outstanding ever since they began fundraising. Well done to all involved but especially the coaching team of Darren Rhodes, Andy King, Mike Cooper and Paul Hankin!

I hope that their hard work and success will set a legacy for the club to see all our U16 teams complete an overseas trip, with the full support of the club and community, as we have harnessed this year. That is down to us as a club now to get behind and make happen annually

There will be a full feature on this in the next newsletter (due at the end of April) and also opportunities to hear more at the whole club meeting, when we get together
