An Insider’s Guide

Everything you need to know outside of the classroom

CUSHING ACADEMY

Our official mascot is the Emperor Penguin. Emperor Penguin.

A waddle is a group of Penguins. We’re pretty into our mascot here at Cushing!

Welcome to the Waddle!

Think of this book as a resource and guide filled with interesting and fun insider knowledge that all Penguins should know.

WE HOPE IT WILL HELP YOU KICKSTART A GREAT YEAR AT CUSHING ACADEMY!

HOW THE PENGUIN CAME TO BE…

Cushing Academy was founded in 1865. It held its first classes in 1875. But the Penguin mascot didn’t appear on campus until 1933, when the coach of the Academy’s ski team — who was fond of the animal — named the first yearbook at Cushing The Penguin.

In 1940, the seniors gave “Peter Penguin” his own yearbook entry; in 1943, the first reference to the Academy’s sports teams as “Penguins” was recorded in the school newspaper; and by the end of World War II, the Cushing Penguin had become the de facto mascot and a source of community pride.

It’s no surprise why! Penguins are social, intelligent, loyal, adventurous, and fun — just like Cushing students.

The Student Journey at Cushing

You are about to embark on a Journey at Cushing — probably the most pivotal of your life so far. You will hear a lot about our Portrait of a Graduate throughout your time here. This is the framework we use to guide your experience at Cushing. It involves four journeys — Personal, Community, Intellectual, and Ethical — that allow you to shape and define who you are and who you would like to become… both here in Ashburnham and in the world beyond.

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE

A Cushing graduate learns, lives, and leads by these ideals:

> advocate for myself.

> pursue excellence in all areas of my life.

In my Intellectual Journey, I:

> approach lifelong learning with openness and curiosity.

Ethical Journey

CUSHING ACADEMY 3

All dorms have student lounges with couches and TVs, as well as common areas with refrigerators to store leftovers.

Did you know: Did you know: Cushing was founded as a coeducational school in 1865. It is the oldest coeducational boarding school in New England.

Living at Cushing

Dorm life at Cushing is super fun. You can look forward to competing in Dorm Olympics, always having someone who will want to order pizza with you, and a place to kick back with friends to play a game or watch a movie. Each dorm has faculty members who live there, too, with their own families — and sometimes pets! They are there to support you, cheer for you, and help you make connections. Both dorm parents and student proctors are ready to help you through normal things like initial homesickness.

Ninth and tenth graders can expect a roommate, assigned based on a questionnaire, whom you will be introduced to when you arrive for move-in. After your first year at Cushing you can submit a roommate preference — and some upperclass students request to live in Lee and Sanborn Houses, where all the rooms are singles.

Dorms are single-gendered, however there is visitation for all genders in common areas of dorms. On the weekends, dorms host all-gender visitations on a rotating basis.

When is lights out?

When is lights out?

Weekdays it is 10:30 pm for ninth and tenth graders and 11:00 pm for juniors, seniors and postgraduates. It is 11:00 pm for all students on Fridays and midnight on Saturdays.

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE 4

WHAT ABOUT DAY STUDENTS?

Day students participate in everything, including evening and weekend events! You are expected to eat lunch on campus and are welcome for breakfasts and dinners. The Day Student Room on the lower level of the Main Building is the hub of activity for day students, featuring lockers, lounge chairs, and an entertainment area for after hours congregation.

YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

You will quickly find a strong support network at Cushing Academy, both amongst your peers and our faculty. In addition to teachers, coaches, the Health Center (see page 32), Counseling Office (see page 33), and the Office of Student Affairs (see page 12), your first line of support includes:

Dorm Parents

Dorm parents are faculty that live in the dorms, supervise study hall, and check in with you at night. They work with student proctors to create an inclusive dorm culture and make everyone feel at home.

Student Proctors

Student proctors are student leaders that live in the dorms and help new students get acclimated, maintain dorm standards and expectations, and rally peers to participate in dorm programming and events, like Dorm Olympics.

Faculty Advisors

Outside of your living quarters, you will be in a small advisory group that meets every Tuesday with a faculty advisor. Your faculty advisor is your liaison with all things Cushing — they keep you up to speed on what is going on, and check in with you, your teachers, coaches, and dorm parents to make sure you are getting the most out of your Cushing experience.

Interested in being a Interested in being a Student Proctor? Student Proctor? It’s a prestigious position and a competitive process! Look for details about Student Proctor applications prior to Spring Break.

Cushing Penguins eat well! Meals at Fisher-Watkins

Dining Commons feature a range of options at every meal. In addition to four different hot food stations — grill, main entree, vegetarian, and “clean” — there is a pizza bar, a salad bar, a fruit bar, a pasta bar, and a deli. We regularly get unique ethnic offerings like fried chicken waffles with sriracha mayo, Korean beef bulgogi, and fried tofu shrimp (okay, so there is some real Penguin food!). And don’t forget the Soup of the Day hidden in the corner. Drinks include a variety of juices, sports drinks, and even green tea!

Missing something from home? Our kitchen takes requests. Plus there is always something sweet to end your meal with, including soft serve and hard ice cream with toppings.

DINING HALL HOURS

Breakfast: 7:30–9:00 am

Lunch: 11:00 am–1:30 pm

Dinner: 5:00–7:15 pm

CUSHING ACADEMY 11

Office of Student Affairs

The Office of Student Affairs is located on the second floor of the Main Building (North Side).

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) is the department that sets community norms and helps knit Cushing together as a community. They are in charge of advisory, student government, student activities, assemblies, trips, Super Saturdays, and more.

Ms. Catlin is one of ten faculty members married to someone else who works at Cushing.

WHY MIGHT YOU COME SEE ME?

If you have ideas on how to improve our community. Some students might come see me if they are working on understanding our community expectations.

SOMETHING SPECIAL I ADD TO CUSHING:

I’ve worked in college counseling, admissions, athletics, residential life and now student affairs, so I can usually understand a variety of views and experiences.

FAVORITE CUSHING MOMENT:

The first time the field hockey team I was coaching was selected for the playoffs.

FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS: Chapel for assembly.

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE 12

PENGUIN VOCAB

“Shout Outs!” “Shout Outs!” At the conclusion of every assembly is an opportunity for students to make announcements and give celebratory shout outs.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Advisory

Led by your faculty advisor, your small advisory group (of 4–5 students) will meet every Tuesday morning to check in, to discuss important issues, and develop caring and supportive relationships. You will also sit with your advisory group at Assembly.

Assembly

On Friday mornings, the entire Cushing community gathers in Cowell Chapel. Expect announcements about upcoming events, celebrations of accomplishments, student performances, and outside speakers. It’s the one time each week that the entire community comes together in one place.

Community Lunch

Mondays mean a shared open lunch time where no one has classes. This is a great time to schedule a meeting, collaborate, or share a bite with a friend.

Study Hall

On Sundays through Thursdays from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, every Penguin has dedicated study hall time. Depending on your year and supervisory needs, this could be in your dorm room (Study Hall), in the library (Structured Study Hall), or in the academic support office (Super Structured Study Hall).

Super Saturdays

All Cushing weekends are fun, but Super Saturdays — usually held once a month — are an extra opportunity to engage with the community. They include special programming on Saturday morning that can include speakers, workshops, presentations, and other student competitions. Participation on Super Saturdays is required for all students, including Day Students.

REACH BOARDING

We use an app called REACH Boarding to coordinate permissions to leave campus and keep track of where all our Penguins are and when they are returning. You’ll want to download the app and have your parent/ guardian download it, too. You can access it online at cushing.reachboarding.com.

While you don’t need REACH permission to walk into downtown Ashburnham during approved time or to take one of our supervised weekend shuttles, if you’re wanting to go elsewhere off-campus — like a haircut, doctor’s appointment, or driving lessons — or to go home for the weekend or to visit at a friend’s house, you’ll need to make a request through REACH.

Want to get away on the weekend?

Want to get away on the weekend?

Weekend REACH requests need to be in by 3pm on Thursdays. The OSA and your parents will confirm your request.

Once you make a request and your parents submit their okay, the Office of Student Affairs will confirm your request… but don’t forget to formally check-out with the on-duty dorm parent before you go!

Clubs + Student Organizations

PENGUINS GET INVOLVED! YOU SHOULD, TOO!

We have more than 20 clubs! You can check out all the options at the Clubs + Student Organizations Fair at the beginning of the year. You can sign up then or just show up any time you see an email blast that catches your interest. If you have an idea for a new club or organization, let the Office of Student Affairs know and we can work with you to make it happen. We love supporting student initiative!

SEE WE HAVE A FULL YEAR!

Community Read

Have a recommendation for next year’s Community Read? Want to help lead a discussion? We solicit new suggestions each spring!

Over the summer we each read a book of our choice from a list of Community Read options suggested by returning students. During orientation, we then gather in groups to discuss and connect about what we’ve read. It’s a great way to start the year!

Convocation

This formal ceremony is the official start to the academic year. It includes the introduction of new faculty, speeches by Dr. Bertin and a chosen faculty member, as well the student body presidents and the singing of the alma mater.

All School Handshake

At the opening and closing of the academic year, all faculty and students participate in the All School Handshake. It’s exactly what it sounds like — you’ll shake hands with each of your fellow Penguins! At the start of year, the All School Handshake happens right after Convocation.

Dorm Olympics

An annual competition to determine dorm superiority! Events start during the first weekend on campus with Opening Games (think: relay races, bubble soccer, and other lighthearted competitions) and continue throughout the year. You’ll want to work with your dorm/house/day teams to coordinate a spectacular entrance to the Games…

Thursday mornings classes start later in the day, giving you an opportunity to sleep in! sleep in!

CONNECTIONS

Ninth and tenth graders at Cushing participate in a oncea-week, 45-minute discussionbased class with about a dozen classmates designed to help us build strong relationships with other Penguins and have a toolbox to make the most of our time here. We get to really talk about our lives and learn about things like strategies for success at Cushing and time management.

Connections Class Teacher

WHY MIGHT YOU COME SEE ME?

For a pep talk or to help problem solve.

SOMETHING SPECIAL I ADD TO CUSHING:

28 years of experience, and I organize Penguin Attack which is one of our favorite events of the year.

FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS:

The Chapel during assembly. I love it when the community is all together.

Mountain Day

A tradition since 1926, the entire campus takes the day off from classes to hike to the top of Mount Monadnock. It is an epic symbol of the individual and community journey that every Cushing graduate takes. Will you make it to the summit this year?

A barbecue greets you at the bottom.

Fall Family Weekend

An extended weekend where all Penguin parents and loved ones are invited to sit in on classes, meet with your advisors, and take in the Cushing experience.

Haunted Heslin + Halloween Dance

Around Halloween, the basement in Heslin Gymnasium is transformed by seniors (the “scare team”) into a delightfully fun and spooky spot. It’s followed by a costumed dance.

Spirit Week

A series of theme days (dress like a friend on twin day, wear a jersey, wear your PJs!) and a raucous pep rally. We have two Spirit Weeks, which lead into our fall and winter sports playoffs.

See more on page 25!

Watch a sneak peek of Mountain Day!

“Purple Fridays” “Purple Fridays”

The PRIDE! Club hosts this event right around Valentine’s Day.

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE 24

MUST HAVE WARDROBE

You can find the standard list of what to bring and what to leave behind online, but here are some insider must haves:

> At least one dressy outfit (coat and tie level of attire for events like Convocation and dressing up on game days).

> Good cold weather gear, including a winter beanie.

> Pajamas to wear to weekend brunch in the dining hall.

> Spirit week gear (sports jerseys, Western wear, outfits to be a twin with your friends).

> Lots and lots of purple!

Tony Fisher Day of Service

A graduate of the Class of 1969, Cushing Trustee and well-known philanthropist Tony Fisher passed away in a plane crash on his way to Cushing in 2003. In his honor, Cushing students and faculty dedicate a day of service each year to the local community.

Decision Day

Sponsored by the College Counseling Office, the first Friday in May we celebrate Decision Day, when seniors announce their intentions for the following year, wear the swag of the colleges and universities they will be attending, and thank faculty for their assistance throughout the application process.

XBL

A student-run, Extreme Baseball League for wiffle ball. This is both highly competitive and very inclusive. Come watch or play on Thursday nights in the spring.

Penguin Attack

Foot chases + squirty penguins = fun! Armed with penguin-shaped squirters, participants are assigned another member of the contest to squirt — and eliminate — in a spirited game similar to tag. Will you be the last Penguin standing?

April 25 is World Penguin Day! World Penguin Day! It’s also the Cushing Day of Giving, an annual opportunity for the Cushing community to give back and support the Academy.

CUSHING DAY OF GIVING APRIL 25 CUSHING ACADEMY 25

BROTHER’S VERSUS VILLAGE PIZZA

There are two local pizza shops in Ashburnham. Which is better? It’s the Great Cushing Debate. Here’s how some of our faculty members vote, along with their favorite orders:

Mr. Donny Connors: Village for calzones Brother’s for everything else

Ms. Sarah Catlin: Brother’s for Cheesesteak

Mr. Donald Harmon: Village for BBQ chicken calzone

Ms. April Winters: Brother’s every time! There’s nothing bad on the menu and there’s something for everyone

Junior/Senior Prom

A traditional formal dance planned by students at a beautiful location off campus.

Spring Fling

An afternoon full of dunk tanks, bouncy houses, cotton candy, and live performances on Drew Common. It’s always a fun celebration as we head into the final weeks of the academic year.

Annual Awards Ceremony

A chance to honor Penguins who have done exceptionally well in a range of endeavors. The Awards Ceremony happens the Friday before graduation.

All School Handshake

After the Awards Ceremony, we have our closing All School Handshake, where we again look each other in the eye, shake hands with one another, and acknowledge all we have accomplished. Seniors do not shake faculty members hands at this event — they will ceremoniously shake faculty members hands at the Senior Walkway after Graduation.

Dr. Jennifer Willis: Brother’s for great Greek pizza!

Mr. Larry Kline: Village, those are my guys!

You’ll have a chance to sing the Alma Mater at Convocation, Graduation, and anytime you’re in a Cushing mood.

SENIOR TRADITIONS

Pumpkin Carving Seniors get time off to carve pumpkins together and then put them on display — the first senior-only event of the year.

100 Day Celebration

A celebratory reception for Seniors that marks their final 100 days at Cushing. You’ll hear from recent alums and have time to reflect on your Cushing journey and envision how you want to close out your time at Cushing.

Senior Day

A planned day of adventure and bonding during Senior week. It usually occurs the day after Prom.

Your Brick on the Senior Walkway

In the last week of school, your name will be added to a brick on the Senior Walkway just outside of the Main Building.

Capping Ceremony

A unique Cushing tradition where Seniors celebrate the individuals that have helped them the most in their Cushing Journey. Each Senior is allowed to ask up to two individuals to “cap” them — formally place their graduation cap on their head for the first time — in front of the school in a fun and celebratory ceremony a few days before graduation.

Senior Breakfast

A formal breakfast the day before graduation, with alumni speakers and an introduction to the perks of being part of Penguin Nation.

Graduation Dinner

A special dinner for graduates and their parents the day before graduation.

Commencement

Opening with Pomp and Circumstance and ending with the alma mater, this is where you will walk across the stage and formally graduate. After the throwing of caps at the end of the ceremony, seniors file out onto the Senior Walkway for a final handshake — and often hug — with faculty members.

“Senior Privileges” “Senior Privileges”

For the final weeks of the year, graduating Seniors propose Senior Privileges. In the past, these have included things like late check-ins, quiet hours instead of study hall, and special visitation rules.

“Penguin Nation” “Penguin Nation”

That’s what we call our alumni community. Once a Penguin, always a Penguin! Be proud to be a part of it!

College Counseling

In addition to a candy bowl, the College Counseling Office often has Capri Sun available for students… don’t be a stranger, stop by!

The College Counseling Office is on the second floor of the Main Building (South Side).

At Cushing, our college counselors help you identify and win acceptance to a college that is just right for you. Director of College Counseling Ms. Emily Roller and her colleagues Ms. Kathleen Ftorek, Mr. Brian Jurek, and Mr. Daniel Monahan have been doing this for three decades(!), plus they know our students deeply from serving as dorm parents, sharing meals together, and coaching athletics. Those multiple connections help counselors understand what you are good at and what you want next so they can provide expert advice.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM COLLEGE COUNSELING

9th Grade: College counseling gets to know you, including touching base in Connections class to help you self-identify key personality traits that will later guide good college choices.

10th Grade: You will participate in a mock admissions exercise, reviewing fictional application files and deciding whether to accept, waitlist, or deny.

11th Grade: It’s getting real! You get matched with a counselor, begin identifying schools to consider, work on the common application, and begin writing essays.

12th Grade + PG: Counselors work shoulderto-shoulder with you, honing final school lists, reviewing applications and essays, practicing admissions interviews, and strategizing. After acceptances come out, they guide you and your family through the process of making your final decision.

Interested in visiting a college in the area? Our college counseling office can help you get to campus. Just ask!

Ms. Emily Roller

Director of College Counseling

WHY MIGHT YOU COME SEE ME?

FAVORITE CUSHING TRADITION: Capping ceremony. I love seeing the really important relationships that get built at Cushing, and what faculty members have meant the most to our students.

FAVORITE CUSHING MEMORY: Running the Boston Marathon for Dana Farber (five times!) and being met by Cushing student volunteers at the finish line.

CUSHING EXPERIENCE STUDENTS SHOULDN’T MISS: Trying to make it to the summit on Mountain Day. You can do it.

Fisher-Watkins Library

Our unique, underground library connects the lower academic quad with the Main Building and is a central hub of activity on campus. There are many comfortable places to work wirelessly — including ten desktop computers and two printers available for student use.

In addition to physical books, the library also is your connection to a vast array of digital materials, including movies, ebooks, audiobooks, periodicals (like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal), article databases (like JSTOR or Academic OneFile), and other reference materials (like the Oxford Reference Online and the Britannica Online Library). You can access these resources through the library link in MyCushing.

You can eat and drink in the library! But all food and drink containers must have lids (no cereal bowls, coffee mugs, or ice cream cones…)

Health Center

Cushing’s Health Center is open 24/7. If you are feeling ill or need to take prescription medications, this is the place to go — just make sure you let your dorm parents know if you need to visit when you’re supposed to be in your dorm room, such as during study hall, or after lights-out.

In addition to a staff of licensed nurses, the health services team also includes Shannon Hurley, APRN, who is in the clinic Monday–Friday from 8 am–4 pm and Medical Director Dr. Michael Mutchler, who visits the clinic twice a week.

URGENT AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL NEEDS

For urgent and emergent medical needs, Health Services closely collaborates with our local hospital and urgent care centers. We have established a strong relationship with Heywood Hospital in Gardner, MA. In the case of a serious injury or illness, all attempts are made to have a Cushing adult accompany the student to the local hospital or urgent care.

We strongly encourage you to complete routine health care while you are at home — however, the Health Center can help you schedule and get to specialist visits if needed… just ask!

We will get you back on the ice soon!

The Health Center is located in the Lemieux Family Wellness Center, right in the heart of campus.

WHY MIGHT YOU COME SEE ME? If you are not feeling well and need to be evaluated by one of my nursing staff, or maybe you need to have some Covid testing to be able to get home for break.

SOMETHING SPECIAL I ADD TO CUSHING: I think that I add a smile for when you are not feeling well.

FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS: My favorite spot is on the grass in front of the Main Building. You can see some amazing sunrises and in the fall the leaves are gorgeous because you are just high enough to see the surrounding area.

Keeping physically fit is an important part of being a Penguin! Our athletic training facilities — both at Watkins Field House and Iorio Arena — help keep Cushing athletes healthy and safe, assisting with injuries, prevention, rehabilitation, physical therapy and more.

When you’re on a team at Cushing, you’ll be issued practice gear — or “Purple and Grays,” which consist of a Cushing Athletics t-shirt and shorts — as well as home and away uniforms. At the end of each day, our equipment managers will wash your practice and game laundry, so it is available for use the next day.

IN AND OUT OF SEASON ATHLETICS

You don’t have to be on a team to take advantage of Cushing’s athletic facilities. There is regularly scheduled gym and ice time available on the weekends, and cardio and weight training equipment is available to students during downtime in the Watkins Field House and Iorio Arena.
