LOCAL > HISTORY

“MAGIC THE MAKING OF THE

Minot was founded in 1886 when the Great Northern Railway laid track through town. The railroad crew had to set up camp in Minot for the winter, and this is when a small tent town grew to a town of over 5,000 within the next few months. Minot earned the nickname the “Magic City” because the growth of the town seemed to be as if by magic.

The railroad crew had to stay in Minot for the winter because they were working on the Gassman Coulee Trestle Bridge, a landmark on the west edge of Minot. The trestle was being built for freight and Amtrak trains. The trestle was originally built out of wood in 1887 but was destroyed by a tornado in 1898. A new steel bridge was built in 1899 and is still standing to this day. (Stop by the Railroad Museum in Downtown Minot on a Saturday to learn all about the history and culture of the railroad from 1886 to the present. There is something for visitors of all ages.) The growth of Minot in the early 1900s had brought an influx of people with all sorts of different backgrounds, which was good for the local businesses. By the time prohibition had started in the 1920s, Minot was a hub for illegal activity. The city was a supply stop for Al Capone’s liquor-smuggling operations. The bootlegging that had gone on in Downtown Minot soon led people to give Minot the nickname “Little Chicago.” The roads from Minot to Canada were trafficked with rum running from the large supply of liquor in Canada to the demand for liquor in the United States. The period of prohibition was a growing period for Minot, which gave us rich and exciting history. In the next few decades, business was booming in Minot. There was shopping, car dealerships, grocery stores, and more. In the 1950s, 12 BeLocal

2020

CITY” you could find 10 cans of tomato soup for just $1 at the grocery stores. A new change for Minot was the construction of the Minot Air Force Base that opened in 1957; this caused major growth for the economy. The Air Force Base was built 13 miles north of Minot, and is now home to the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing. The growth from the MAFB was halted in 1969 when a flood hit Minot. The Souris River outgrew its banks and flowed through the streets of Minot. The water devastated many homes and businesses, but the residents of Minot came together to rebuild the flooded parts of the city.

In 2000, Minot had grown to 37,000 residents, but that would soon rapidly increase. In 2006, the Bakken was forming and North Dakota was in the thick of an oil boom. Despite a nationwide recession, North Dakota’s unemployment was the lowest in the country. The oil boom lasted for nearly a decade and helped the economy in many North Dakota towns, including Minot. The oil industry still has a big presence in North Dakota. In 2011, Minot was truly changed forever. A historic flood, called the 100-year flood, hit Minot. This flood left most of the city underwater; over 11,000 residents were forced to evacuate their

homes. Many main roads in Minot had to be closed, and people had to boil their water because Minot’s water-treatment plant had flooded. Unlike the 1969 flood, which happened in April, the 2011 flood happened in June. This caused the water to become very warm in the affected houses and business, which caused even more damage. Houses were filled with water for almost a month, and many residents were without places to stay. This is when everyone really came together to help each other. People who were unaffected by the flood were opening their homes for those who had nowhere to go. Once the water had receded back into its banks, people were volunteering to help clean out flooded homes and businesses. Through the tragedy, the people of Minot became united and began to heal together. Although, there are still signs of the 2011 flood, Minot has rebuilt and certainly become stronger. Today, the City of Minot is working on being the best city it can be for its residents and the population has begun to grow again since the flood. Minot strives to be a safe and comfortable community for everyone. The history of Minot has shaped the city into what it is today and gives the people of Minot something to be proud of.

There’s no better way to get to know a city than through its unique dining options. Along with lots of favorite chains and franchises, Minot has plenty of locally owned eateries. From the classy to the quirky, we know you’ll find some new favorites in no time. Here are some of ours... The Starving Rooster The Starving Rooster is modern and truly one of a kind to the Minot community. Their building was built in 1919 as a tractor company, and, amazingly, they have repurposed almost all of the original materials in the building. Their wood fired pizza is a customer favorite. Make sure to check out their brunch on Sundays, and their $4 pints of all ND brews on Tuesdays. 10 North Main 10 North Main offers an amazing selection of entrées and tapas, as well as craft cocktails. They are known for their hand-cut steaks, pheasant strips and cheesecakes. Check out the Silhouette Room for a cocktail hour; it is a lounge looking over the dining room. LIVE MUSIC

Live music from local musicians can be found all over the city, throughout all seasons; restaurants, bars, parks and at events. It certainly isn’t Nashville, but here are a few spots you can find live music on the regular... The Original Bar and Nightclub recently got a major facelift and is a great venue to see bands from all over the state play on the weekends. You can hear music from any genre at “The O,” from country to rock. The Original has a large stage and an open area for people to really enjoy the music and show off their dance moves. But they also have an upper level loft for people who want to enjoy the music but don’t prefer to be in the crowd. At Ebeneezer’s Eatery and Irish Pub you can find live music almost any day of the week. You will get the feeling that you are in the middle of Dublin, Ireland, when you step into the atmosphere of Ebeneezer’s or taste the authentic Irish grub! If classical music is your style, you can see the Minot Symphony Orchestra perform from the fall through the spring at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall, located on Minot State University Campus. Other traditional options include the Minot Brass Band, Chamber Chorale and City Band -- whose concerts are all free to the public. When larger concerts come to town, you can find them at the Minot City Auditorium or the North Dakota State Fair Event Center. These venues give you the experience of being at a concert in a big city while still being five miles from home. You can keep a pulse on upcoming concerts from Jade Presents, jadepresents.com

tips from a local mom and military wife The “Magic City is a wonderful place to build and grow a family. Regardless of if you grew up here or relocated, Minot is a seriously fabulous place. Five years ago, my (now) husband and I moved from Upstate New York to Minot. I will be honest: When he told me he had applied for a job in North Dakota and was offered the position, I had to look it up on a map. I had never been to the upper Midwest after all, and it had been a while since geography class. When he accepted his position with the ND Air National Guard, we started the process of relocation.

LOCAL > POINT OF VIEW

Mitchell had been stationed here on active duty many years prior to our relocation and had fond memories of his time here. Prior to our move, I flew out for an interview. Upon arriving, I called and shared with him that Minot was not the city he remembered. Minot had had a lot of changes and growth over the years. After he had PCS’d (permanent change of station) and left Minot, the city experienced a devastating flood, an oil boom and a lot of city revitalization. The city I landed in was refreshed, ever-changing in terms of growth, and had many new businesses, including Target, which I remember specifically hoping for. When we arrived, it was the very tail end of winter, but the spring weather quickly approached and warmed the air. It was the first chance as a young couple to explore our new home. To our surprise, we went to Oak Park, a beautiful park near the center of the city with trails, several play areas for kids and a lot of well-kept green spaces. We walked, and as we did, we were shocked on the number of people that greeted us. It was then I knew we would love it here. The people of Minot are so kind, truly “North Dakota Nice!” Since then, our lives have changed; marriage and kids certainly make a person think about their surroundings a bit differently. But after five years, with confidence, I can still say we truly do love Minot! Minot has so many fantastic offerings for families, including two major highlights, the two largest events in the state: the North Dakota State Fair and Norsk Høstfest. Both events are super fun to attend either as adults or families. I also find as a mom, there are several hundred events a year that we can attend or stay active with. Some are especially for kiddos, and some are completely free – a bonus! From story hours downtown at Main Street Books or exploring the Magic City Discovery Center, to the high-energy Full STEAM Ahead program, and the Make A Scene Kids Theatre, there is seriously a lot of offerings for children in this city. My favorite weekend activity in the summer has been taking my daughter to the splash pads. Cecilia absolutely loves going to play in the water. Radio City Park Splash Pad is perfect for younger kids with its smaller water attractions and lighter water pressure. We walk in the parks, and check out the several miles of bike trails. No matter the season, we can stay active, even if that means walking at one of the numerous craft shows or attending area events. As a mom, it can be tough to balance the budget, maintain some sanity and entertain the kiddos. But in our time here in Minot, I have learned that there are so many offerings to keep all things stable.

DAY AND WEEKEND

TRIP IDEAS

There is a lot to do in Minot, so it’s understandable if you never want to leave. However, you should know that there are lots of fun places to visit within a short drive. Along the way you’ll experience pure landscapes, big skies, agriculture and the rugged beauty that makes North Dakota “legendary.” So, get your favorite playlist or a fresh audiobook, pack the cooler, and head out on a road trip.

Medora (3 hours south) Medora is a small, old, western town placed right next to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and it is a perfect weekend getaway for the family. Make sure to bring your camera; there’s a lot of wildlife to capture. And if you are a history buff, make sure you get the opportunity to sit on Theodore Roosevelt’s front porch. But whatever you do, don’t leave without indulging on a Pride Dairy Ice Cream cone. You can head there for a day, but a weekend would be better!

FUN FACT

Bismarck (1.45 hours south) Just a short drive south, you can explore Bismarck, home of our state’s capital. In the summer, the Raging River outdoor waterpark is worth planning a day trip to relax on their lazy river, rush down the tube and body slides, or explore the interactive water play area. While there, make sure you also visit the Heritage Museum near the capital, which displays several types of dinosaur bones, Native American heritage pieces, and hosts an interactive kids zone including an indoor tree house full of exploratory learning opportunities. Bismarck also has a lot of cool breweries and restaurants, including a rooftop biergarten called “Luft.” Check it out!

While driving to Medora, you can take a detour and drive the Enchanted Highway. This 32-mile stretch of highway will show you larger-than-life metal sculptures on the side of the road that will make you want to stop the car and get a closer look. The metal sculptures are actually the largest sculptures made from scrap metal in the world!

OSTLUND FAMILY Calling Minot Home for Generations The Ostlunds are a local family who have built a life in Minot over generations. This is their story and what they love about their hometown. David and Cheri are both Minot locals, and have lived here their entire lives. Cheri’s parents moved to Minot from Grand Forks so her father could work at the Minot Air Force Base in the 1950s. David spent his childhood in Minot riding his bicycle and playing basketball for Minot High. David and Cheri met on a blind date, dated for a couple years, and got married in 1991. They chose to stay in Minot to start their new journey of marriage. They now have two kids, Aaron, 25, and Jessica, 22, and a dog named Gus. David and Cheri decided to stay in Minot for a lot of reasons. They wanted a safe and comfortable place to raise their children. They like how close the community is and how easy it was for them to meet new people and make friends. David and Cheri’s favorite thing to do in the summer is riding their bikes around Oak Park and going to see the Arts in the Park concerts as often as they can. What they loved about raising their children, Aaron and Jessica, in Minot was the amount of things to do for kids. They were given so many different things to try, like ice skating, soccer, gymnas-

tics, dancing, and swimming. The Roosevelt Park Zoo and the Roosevelt Pool was the focus of many memories for Aaron and Jessica. Their summers growing up were full of trips to see monkeys at the zoo and many sunny days swimming at the pool. Aaron is now attending Minot State University to become an English teacher. Between going to class and doing homework, Aaron’s go-to spot is Ebeneezer’s Irish Pub in Downtown Minot. Their Big Focker sandwich and Guinness on tap help him destress after school. Jessica recently got married, and she and her husband, Tanner, love finding new places for date night. Jessica and Tanner both grew up in Minot, but they enjoy being tourists in their own city by exploring places they have never been. Their perfect date night would include dinner at Wings and Rings, taking their two dogs to the Dakota Bark Park, and a movie at Oak Park Theater. Overall, the Ostlunds chose a life in Minot because it has always felt like home. They have never thought of leaving because everything is so familiar and comfortable in Minot. If you are from here or not, you’ll feel welcome in the “Magic City.”

LOCAL TIP

“When exploring Woodland Trail, don’t miss finding the hidden ‘painted rocks’ along the trail as you go. If you find one, pick it up and find a new hiding spot for it so that it keeps everyone on their toes when they come to walk and try to find them again and again. It’s a game that continually evolves as others play it!” – Jamie R.

DOWNTOWN STREET ART Minot has been getting more and more Instagram-worthy street art murals. You can grab a few friends and stroll Downtown Minot to find beautiful art done by very talented artists in an effort to make our city more colorful.

THE WOODLAND TRAIL Located right off the highway bypass is a beautiful hidden walking trail. This walking path is just secluded enough to forget that you are right in the middle of town and enjoy the nature that is around you. It’s a little gem that many people who have lived in Minot for years don’t even know about! The Woodland Trail consists of three miles of double-wide aggregate surface in the woodland area along the Souris River. The trail also has floating dock river crossings in two areas, big logs to climb on, and tons of nature to explore. It is an ideal location for families, local schools, preschools, daycare, and even birders from around the United States to explore nature in their own backyard.

SAUL’S Saul’s is the definition of a speakeasy. It’s literally a hidden, secret bar. The space is dimly lit and quaint, you’re sure to love it—if you can find it! You’ll have to text their number to get a riddle, and you can only get in if you answer the riddle correctly. Good luck! THE BISON TRAIL A perfect way to really see the beauty of Minot. Not interested in flying the airplane, but still want to see the Magic City from the air?

Most students take an average of 6-8 months to complete their certificate, with some able to finish it within 3.

After completing your Private Pilot Certificate, continue your journey by pursuing your instrument, commercial, CFI, and CFI-I ratings!
