publishers’ note

Welcome to Stroll Hurricane

JULY

As you can see from the cover, Teays Valley Living has officially become Stroll Hurricane! The look and feel of the magazine are updated, but everything else will stay the same. Harold and I are still your publishers, and we’ll still share exclusive stories of area residents, pets, studentathletes, local businesses, and more. I know you value calling Hurricane home– a safe, beautiful community worthy of strolling. This publication has exclusively served homeowners in the area since its inception in 2017, and that will continue to be the case as Stroll Hurricane. Change is not always easy, but we are excited to be turning a new page in this magazine (pun intended) and providing you with an even higherquality monthly publication. It’s a change we hope our residents and our local business partners alike will grow to appreciate. Are you excited about the new name and look of your private magazine? I’d love to know. Better yet, send us a selfie of you with this re-branded issue at tvl@n2pub.com. In this issue, we feature Andrew and Ashley Dawson, and their daughter, Isla, as our cover story. Additional articles include Athlete of the Month, Bryson Rigney, Young Achiever, Ashlee Moyer, and this issue’s Sponsor Spotlight featuring Village Heirlooms. If you own a business and would like to reach area homeowners, contact us to see how we can be of service. Congratulations to the Hurricane High School baseball team on winning another State Championship. I hope you’ll join us as we Stroll through summer! Happy Fourth of July!

Meet

Andrew, Ashley, and Isla Andrew and Ashley Dawson, along with their daughter, Isla, and their dog, Tyson, have lived in Woodcylffe Chase for the last year after having lived in the Bloomingdale subdivision. Andrew and Ashley both grew up in Sissonville and graduated from Sissonville High School. They both later graduated from Marshall University. Andrew told Stroll Hurricane how they became a couple: “We met in middle school when Ashley transferred back to Sissonville. Although we knew each other, we were not friends but had similar friend groups. It was not until our senior year in high school that we began talking to each other, and we started our relationship right before we graduated.” Andrew is the Market President for United Bank. His territory includes 8

Putnam, Cabell, and Wayne counties. Andrew works primarily with business owners, catering to their commercial borrowing needs. He is a member of the Putnam County Parks and Recreation board. Andrew also serves as a board member for the Coalfield Development as well as for Hurricane Trail Racing. Additionally, he volunteers at Meeks Mountain Trail. Ashley is an operations manager for United Bank, helping to oversee the bank’s loan document preparation department. Andrew and Ashley have a daughter, Isla, 7, who is in the first grade at West Teays Elementary. Isla plays soccer with HYSL on a team Ashley coaches, and she also plays for the Charleston Clash. Isla enjoys dancing at Dancing Unlimited, basketball, and swimming and will join the swim team this summer at Sleepy Hollow. The Dawsons enjoy traveling and the outdoors. “Most of our hobbies are outdoor activities, whether it is going to Isla’s soccer games, swimming, running, or hiking 123-456-7890 Stroll Hurricane

at Meeks Mountain,” Ashley said. As far as a vacation destination, Ashley shared, “Anywhere with a beach or Disney World. We also enjoy traveling to Hilton Head, SC, and Destin, FL.” Back at home, family dinners consist of “anything quick and easy as we bounce from work events, sporting events, and a constant variety of activities,” shared Ashley. Ashley further commented, “With our busy schedules, we try to make every Friday evening a family date night and go out to dinner as a family at one of our favorite restaurants.” Andrew told us the family is all fans of Marshall University sports. “We are a family that bleeds green.” When the time for relaxation presents itself, Ashley enjoys going to the gym or spending time with friends. Meanwhile, Andrew relaxes by running and training for races. The Dawson family are proud members of the community. Andrew states, “We love the sense of community we have found in Teays Valley. With neither of us being from here originally, we have been welcomed with open arms and have made strong friendships within the area.” Ashley added, “We love the Woodclyffe neighborhood. We can go out in the evening for a walk or a bike ride and see several of our neighbors. It is also nice to see a growing number of kids in the neighborhood who can play with each other and grow up together.” We are blessed the Dawson family decided to relocate to the Teays Valley area and have become valued community members.

ASHLEE MOYER By Harold Cooper

PATIENT APPRECIATION

YOU ARE INVITED

ANNUAL SUMMER BASH AUGUST 19TH | 7:30PM - 9:30PM WAVES OF FUN HURRICANE, WV 12

July 2022

Ashlee Moyer, 20, is the daughter of Cindy Moyer. The Moyers have lived in New London Commons for 13 years. Ashlee graduated from Hurricane High School in 2020 and is currently a biology major with an emphasis in neuroscience at West Virginia University. Ashlee, an honor student, serves as vice president of the WVU Collegiate 4-H Club, handling finances, running meetings, and organizing activities. She also volunteers at the Cancer Center at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, where, as she states, “I am blessed to interact with the sweetest patients.” Ashlee will graduate a year early from WVU in 2023. She told Stroll Hurricane, “I will take a gap year between undergraduate and medical school to work full time as a lab technician in a cancer research lab. I will be applying to MD/Ph.D. combined degree programs to become a neurosurgical oncologist. My goal is to own my own cancer research lab to serve West Virginia.” Ashlee, who is involved in research on zebrafish motor bias, was recently sought out by a medical doctor at WVU who has her own glioma cancer lab. “So, I have decided to switch to cancer research since it aligns with my future career path.” As far as a favorite memory, Ashlee shared, “Presenting my research poster at the 2022 Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium in the biological sciences poster category. I presented my findings on how visual experience during a neurodevelopmental period affects motor bias (swim direction preference) in larval zebrafish.” Out of 24 presentations, Ashlee was chosen as the winner. Ashlee got started in research through the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP) at WVU, a year-long program designed for undergraduates interested in research. Ashlee commented, “I am ecstatic when my experiment goes according to plan. With research, it is mostly failure, but when you get that one experiment that produces good results, I feel like I have accomplished something, especially when it has never been tested by anyone else in the world.” At times, Ashlee’s hard work and determination are tested. “I am in my research lab roughly 20 hours a week while being an honors student, making straight As, volunteering, and participating in clubs.” So how does she get it all done? “I keep a planner on my iPad, which has everything from doctors’ appointments to my class schedule, but for things I need to accomplish within a week, I keep a paper to-do list.”

To whom might this exceptional young woman look up? Ashlee is quick to point to her mom. “She is the one person I look up to most. She raised me and always told me I could do anything I set my mind to. I thank her for always pushing me and giving me the resources to succeed in life. Thank you for raising me the way you did while being a single parent. I truly do not know how you did it; you are my hero, and I love you, Mommy!” Ashlee Moyer is a young achiever that the Hurricane community is very proud to call our own.

BRYSON RIGNEY Bryson Rigney, 18, is a recent graduate of Hurricane High School and the son of Todd and Shawn Rigney. Bryson has two brothers: Brady, 15, who just completed his freshman year at HHS, and Bear, 11, who attends West Teays Elementary. The Rigney Family lives in the Fox Run subdivision. “Growing up, I loved all sports, and while I played basketball and football, baseball has always been my favorite, ever since I started playing at 3 years old.” Bryson was an important piece of Coach Sutphin’s Redskin baseball team these past two years, starting at third base as well as handling some starting pitching duties. With Bryson’s help, the Redskins made the State Championships the last two years, losing in the championship game last year and gaining the crown this season. Bryson was named to the 2021 all-MSAC team and second-team all-state captain. In 2022, Bryson was first-team on both levels. When asked to comment on his teammates, Bryson told Stroll Hurricane, “I love the vibe between all of us and how well we get along.” He also mentioned he loves the competition of the sport and the friendships he has made. In discussing what he has learned while playing baseball, he stated, “I learned how to work through adversity and how to grow as a person and teammate.” As far as a favorite coach, Bryson said, “My favorites are Coach Sutphin and Coach Baldwin. They have both changed my baseball career in more ways than just on the field.” Bryson laughed when he told us his favorite moment was “when Coach Sutphin finally allowed us to play rap music during warm-ups.” Although baseball keeps him busy, Bryson is involved with the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Link Crew. As far as advice for young Hurricane-area players who hope to play for the high school team one day, Bryson offered, “Don’t get down on yourself; take the tough times and use them as fuel.” Bryson has committed to play baseball at Western Kentucky University while pursuing his goal of becoming a dentist. Join us in wishing Bryson the best of luck!

MEET DEXTER

Tommy Teays: Hello, Dexter. I must say mini Goldendoodles melt my heart. Dexter: Nice to meet you, Tommy. Sorry about that heart thing; I hope that doesn’t hurt. TT: No worries, boy. So, are you named after the lead character of the TV program Dexter? Dexter: I have no clue what that is. This puppy is too busy for TV. I think Cathy and Mark just liked the name. I can go find them and ask. TT: Thanks, but that won’t be necessary. How did you come to live with the Chandlers? Dexter: They got me from a breeder in Kentucky after the sudden loss of Leo, their beloved golden retriever.

Pooch's Palace Boarding Doggie Daycare Grooming Now taking reservations for summer boarding

TT: I am certain you have filled a void in their hearts. Dexter: There you go again with that heart thing; you are a bit obsessed, my friend. TT: Speaking of which, I hear you are obsessed with your large teddy bear. Dexter: That’s true. I love the big guy. TT: You are quite funny. I understand you are also multi-talented. Dexter: Although I am only about 8 months old, I started mastering commands at 9 weeks. I can sit, shake, high five, low five, dance, beg, and wait. TT: Impressive. Did the Chandlers have any trouble crate training you? Dexter: Well, they had no trouble putting me in my crate, but getting me to stay in that terrible contraption is another story. By the time Cathy and Mark got home, I had escaped from “jail” and greeted them at the door. They were pleased I did not have any accidents or bother anything in the house. TT: Besides the loss of Leo, is it true you fill another void in the Chandlers’ lives? Dexter: Yes. Since most of their children and grandchildren don’t live in the area, I am their main source of companionship. TT: With that being the case, are you, perhaps, a bit spoiled? Dexter: Yes, being spoiled and being treated like royalty are the same thing. TT: I can tell you are loving and intelligent. Are there others who love you and enjoy your company? Dexter: Yes. Cathy and Mark’s grandchildren who do live locally love to come over and spend quality time. TT: Dexter, it has been my pleasure talking to you. Dexter: Right back at ya, Tommy; now give me a high five!

Not all homeowners have the footprint in their kitchens for long islands, endless countertop space, and walk-in pantries. That does not mean that homeowners cannot create the kitchen of their dreams. In fact, smaller spaces can outperform their larger counterparts because smaller kitchens tend to maximize every inch of space. Designing a smaller kitchen for homeowners sometimes will require determining how to best use cabinets, maximize countertops, and develop a flow that makes it easy to use the kitchen for multiple purposes. Smaller kitchens, by their very nature, tend to be more efficient spaces. Efficiency translates to less waste. Because storage is typically limited, food in the fridge or pantry areas does not get overlooked, misplaced, or allowed to go bad. Similarly, smaller kitchens require homeowners to prioritize their tools, gadgets, and countertop appliances. Every item in smaller kitchens tends to be used frequently. You may not have space for the sandwich press or apple slicers. Less clutter is another benefit of a small kitchen because most of the items in the kitchen have been curated to maximize their use. Smaller kitchens also tend to be cleaner because there just is no room to stack dirty dishes, groceries, or cookware. A smaller space does not have to appear or function as small. Open shelves provide the flexibility to change the look and feel of the space whenever you want, thereby maintaining a fresh new look all the time. We often recommend to homeowners who opt for open shelves to paint them the same color as the wall. This allows homeowners to create focal points with the items they place on shelves. Eliminating cabinet hardware is another technique to make smaller space function and look larger without compromising functionality. Drawers and cabinets can be opened using a lip or touch latch. You also do not have to worry about bumping into a knob or pulling in tighter quarters. Maximizing the use of corner spaces can help enhance the look and performance of smaller kitchens either for storage or as the location for sinks. Some other techniques to make smaller spaces appear and function as larger are to use light colors for cabinets, patterned floor covering, and running backsplash from the counter to the ceiling.

Village Heirlooms Village Heirlooms, located in Hurricane on Teays Valley Road, is recognized as one of the few furniture stores in West Virginia selling furniture made of solid wood. Furniture from most other stores may glisten and gleam, but it is made from particleboard or medium-density fiberboard (MDF). “Our furniture is built by Amish craftsmen using furniture building techniques passed from generation to generation for hundreds of years,” stated Rich Edwards. Village Heirlooms is owned by Rich and Jennifer Edwards. They purchased the business in 2016 from its founder, Norman Schrock, and moved it to the current location. Rich and Jennifer both grew up in Lincoln County and are graduates of Hamlin High School, where they developed a friendship that led to their marriage in 1977. They just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Village Heirlooms is the largest seller of outdoor furniture in West Virginia. “We are proud to share that we have been named an outstanding dealer for Luxcraft® Outdoor Furniture for the fourth consecutive year,” Rich noted. Luxcraft® has over 250 dealers nationwide, and Village Heirlooms has been in their top twenty for total sales for five years straight, achieving the number 7 position in 2019. Luxcraft® provides a limited lifetime warranty on all their outdoor furniture products. The most popular type of outdoor products featured at Village Heirlooms

is furniture made from Polywood. The content of Polywood is 90% recycled milk jugs. It is fade-resistant, mold and mildew-resistant, and stain-resistant. And while it won’t warp or splinter, its best feature is it never needs to be sanded, stained, painted, or sealed! It doesn’t even need to be covered or taken indoors in the winter. With over 30 color combinations, customers can find the perfect fit for their outdoor home décor. It is ideal for the yard, porches, decks, patios, and pools. Village Heirlooms also sells a line of outdoor children’s playground equipment. Rich added, “There are over 19 models to choose from, and each one comes with a 20-year limited warranty from our Amish builder.” “One of the best things about our furniture is that it is custom made, meaning you can choose the wood species, the stain, and even the hardware. We work with over 70 Amish builders! Although we have a showroom packed with various examples of fine quality furniture, if a showroom model is not exactly what the customer is looking for, they can peruse catalogs from any of our builders to find the exact style they have in mind.” While most folks know that Amish-made furniture is top tier for quality furniture, they may not know the Amish also make some of the best mattresses on the market. Rich stressed, “Our mattress builder has 18

different mattress models, and every one of them comes with a 90-day money-back, satisfaction guarantee and a 15-to-20-year warranty, depending on the model. We even have TempurPedic® style mattresses.” Another line of products not often associated with Amish builders is office furniture. Village Heirlooms carries a large selection of quality, solid wood office furniture for your home or corporate office. “Like our home furniture, it is all custom built to your exact specifications.” Some of Village Heirlooms’ newest additions to their collection of Amishmade products include furniture-style

dog crates, wind chimes, and the children’s playground sets. Rich elaborated, “For most of our products, we provide free delivery and set up to customers who live within 30 miles of our store. Delivery beyond 30 miles is available for a nominal fee. If you have a vacation home outside the range of our local delivery trucks, we can ship via common carriers to anywhere in the continental USA.” Rich and Jennifer have five grown children and nine grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 11 years. The grandchildren include seven boys and a

set of twin girls. Since most of Rich and Jennifer’s children live in other states, their favorite thing to do is coordinate family get-togethers. The most recent event was a “staycation” in July at their home that included all the children, children’s spouses, and grandchildren. Village Heirlooms is located at 3469 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, WV. That is just down the street from the entrance to Valley Park and the wave pool. How wonderful it is to have a unique, quality furniture retailer right here in our backyard. If you are in the market for some of the highest quality furniture

available in West Virginia, you owe it to yourself to visit Village Heirlooms. In addition to Village Heirlooms, Rich and Jennifer Edwards also own the Hallmark store in the Liberty Square Shopping Center. JOHN BUCKLAND “AKA” WV Batman

You may not know the name John Buckland, but most of us know the WV Batman. In 2012 Buckland started Heroes 4 Higher (H4H). “H4H was started not long after I came home from a two-year stint in Iraq,” Buckland said. Thirty years prior to becoming the local Caped Crusader, Buckland was a victim of abuse as a youth. “I went through abuse, addiction, depression, thoughts of suicide, and a self-destructive life.” For the last 10 years, he has brought a message of hope to others during their difficult times. Today, Buckland is a full-time Batman. Through the charity side of H4H, he visits children battling illness, tragedy, or other difficult life situations. “My most recent volunteer mission had me in Poland for two weeks giving hope and smiles to Ukrainian and Polish families impacted by the invasion of Ukraine.” The business side of the organization has Buckland attending school assemblies, locally and around the country, speaking on bullying, suicide prevention, drugs, and school violence. Not only does Buckland wear a mask and a 48-pound suit and cape, but he also owns a Batmobile. “The H4H Hopemobile, or Batmobile (very cool to look at), serves as a rolling memorial for over 30 children we have helped lay to rest and even given some of the last rides prior to their passing away.” During his time in Iraq, Buckland met his wife Ronda, and the couple moved to Huntington, where she is from. The couple has a 9-year-old daughter Skylar. John has a son Chaz, 32, who lives in Georgia with his granddaughter Zoe. Buckland commented, “Ronda will be Bat Girl or Wonder Woman and join

me from time to time. My family has been so supportive over these last 10 years.” Batman has been familiar to many of us in the community. “I have been to several festivals, public events, and parties in the area and have visited families with children in the hospital.” Buckland shared his thoughts on volunteerism, “The only thing we take with us when we die is what we did for others while we were here.” Buckland continued, “I have worked through my issues and demons and am

now in an everlasting place of healing. This involves giving back to the community; each event I go to provides an opportunity to inspire someone to be a hero in their own lives. I’ll be doing this until I can’t anymore; it’s my final stage of healing.” To donate to support Heroes 4 Higher and the H4H Foundation volunteer missions, please visit WWW.H4H.is.

Putnam Career and Technical Center...

A

of fers a patient care program?

t Putnam Career and Technical Center, the patient care technician program teaches us that nursing not only takes heart but also takes determination and the will to succeed in the field. In our program, we discover all of those qualities and more within ourselves. Since the program is a simulated workplace, it considers various aspects of how a real nursing assistant would function. Throughout the program’s twoyear duration, we acquire knowledge of medical terminology, gain experience with equipment, and learn how to care for a patient’s wellbeing correctly. By supporting each other in our simulated workplace, we learn how to work as a team and build relationships with co-workers to prepare us for such a high-need, in-demand career. Teamwork is utilized every day. From completing tasks such as doing patient laundry to utilizing teammates to aid in bed making and properly performing vital signs, each person has an integral position in the class. Some of our simulated workplace

28

positions include head nurses, safety director, dietary supervisor, laundry supervisor, maintenance supervisor, infection control supervisor, technology supervisor, and inventory clerk. Our positions change as the course progresses, so everyone has the opportunity to practice specific skillsets that come with each new position. Our program provides students with an encouraging learning environment while teaching personal and professional responsibility. The staff at Putnam Career and Technical Center are incredibly supportive and devoted to preparing every student to excel in the workplace through knowledgeable instructors, dependable counselors, and notable administrators. Students in the patient care program have access to specialized medical equipment, including multiple simulation mannequins. When granted access to this equipment, students are expected to behave in a professional manner and act responsibly. Overall, the Patient Care Technician Program cultivates knowledgeable, passionate, and responsible health care workers. PCTC offers many opportunities to advance students’ careers after graduating from the center. Once students have completed the patient care technician program, they are equipped with multiple certifications such as CPR/ First Aid/AED. Attaining these certifications ensures competency in important emergency procedures, how to operate an automated external defibrillator, and how to perform CPR. Students will be certified in HIPAA, OSHA, the operation of EKG, and phlebotomy procedures and will acquire a patient care technician certification upon program completion. These certifications are important in the health care field and can help students achieve a position in a clinical setting, progress to higher positions, and/or prepare for postsecondary education. Throughout the course of the program, students are granted the opportunity to step inside the real world of nursing. Within the class, students learn medical terminology, receive the experience of a simulated workplace environment, and have the ability to gain multiple certifications. With benefits of teamwork, self-discipline, and leadership skills, the Putnam Career and Technical Center’s Patient Care Technician Program prepares many young, aspiring nurses and other future medical professionals to confidently take their first steps into the medical field.

Now enrolling for our fall medical assisting class. This class is not only economical but also a good way to get you started on a career pathway. Assistance is available with job placement, and support after placement. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
