Olive and Roxy

precious pets Submitted By Resident: Kim Underwood

Family Member Names Kevin, Kim, Parker, Lizzie, Tanner Pets Names: Olive and Roxy Type of Dogs- Golden Retrievers Ages: Olive- 7 years old, Roxy- 2 years old Where and Why did you get your pets? We rescued both of them! Their previous owners wanted to re-home them for different reasons. Is there a story behind its/their names? Olive came to us already named. We initially thought about changing her name, but ended up falling in love with it. Roxy came to us named Bonnie. We decided that name did not fit her spunky personality, so we re-named her Roxy. Anything special or unusual about them (talents/ quirks)? They are a little (well maybe a lot) co-dependent. They have to be near us at all times. They prefer to be with their parents, but if we’re away they will settle for their human siblings. What do you like best about your pets? Their sweet personalities and dispositions. They are super friendly and never meet a stranger. Any funny stories? Olive IS afraid of lightening/thunder/heavy rain, but isn’t afraid of anything else. Not even the vacuum. Roxy is NOT afraid of lightning/thunder/heavy rain, but is afraid or skittish about everything else. They definitely have different fears! How spoiled is/are your pets? So spoiled! They honestly have no idea they are not humans. What else should we know about your pets and how your pets has/have enriched your home and family? We take them with us everywhere we go, if possible. One of their favorite places to go is the lake to ride our boat. Do you have a pet that deserves the spotlight? Email Amanda.Mercer@n2pub.com for details.

The Kirk Family travel tales Submitted By Resident: Heather Kirk Instagram: @wediscoveralabama

Where and when did you go? We have spent the past year on a journey to see every county in Alabama. Who accompanied you on this vacation? Myself (Heather) and the kids have gone on all of the trips. Dad (Drew) and Grandparents have tagged along as they could as well. Is there a special reason why you chose this destination? One day I found a book in a local bookstore called Amazing Alabama: A Coloring Book Journey Through Our 67 Counties by Laura Murray. I was inspired by all the amazing things in our state and decided that this would be a great learning activity for the kids. We decided to make it a goal to see all the counties before our daughter, Hadley, finished studying Alabama History in 4th grade. Did you try any special cuisine? We always eat at local restaurants while visiting. This is one of our favorite parts of the day! We have had some hits and some misses! These are a few of our favorite restaurants that we have discovered...Pike CountySisters Restaurant (Banana pudding!), Hale County- Greensboro Pies at the Stable Coffee Shop, Calhoun County- Dad’s BBQ (Cheddar biscuits), Colbert County- The Palace (Milkshakes), Madison County- Rosie’s Mexican Cantina, Cullman County - All Steak (Orange rolls), Blount County- Charlie B’s, and DeKalb County-Wildflower Cafe. What activities did you do while on vacation? We have explored many historical sites and places of interest. I am a big

14 The Bridge • October 2020

fan of covered bridges so we have seen just about every one of those that we are able to see. We have also enjoyed seeing many of Alabama’s natural wonders including Little River Canyon, Noccalula Falls, Dismals Canyon, Cathedral Caverns, and Mount Cheaha. We have also visited several important historical locations including the Civil Rights Institute, Freedom Rider’s Memorial, Battle of Horseshoe Bend, and Ivy Green (Birthplace of Helen Keller). We make it a point to see something of importance in every county. We can’t just “drive through” it to get credit. We have to intentionally visit something there or someplace to eat within each county. What was the most unexpected thing that happened? I wasn’t sure how the kids would react to the idea. There are definitely times when they have complained but overall they love every bit of our adventures. It has been a great time for a family to be together. My parents have also joined us on lots of adventures and seeing their excitement has been fun. We have made many memories that we will always cherish. What was your favorite part about the vacation? I have had many people as what are the favorite places that we have seen. Many of these are easy day trips from Birmingham. We still have just over twenty counties to go but out of those that we have seen, these are our favorite spots. Little River Canyon (DeKalb

and Cherokee), Civil Rights Institute (Jefferson), Jackson Lake Island (Elmore), Covered bridges (Blount has several), Noccalula Falls (Etowah), Wilderness Park and Bamboo Forest (Autagua), Dismals Canyon (Franklin), Bald Rock and Cheaha State Park (Cleburne and Calhoun), Ivy Green (Colbert), Cahawba (Dallas), and Fort Morgan (Baldwin). Would you go back? Yes! There are so many beautiful places in Alabama! We have a running list of places that we would like to return to! Do you have any recommendations for someone going to this area? The main recommendation would be to give yourself time to explore. Some of the prettiest sights that we have seen have been on our drives. Don’t ignore the historical markers on the side of the road! You might discover something amazing! Also, buy an atlas because you will definitely lose cell service in parts of our beautiful state and you might end up wandering around for a bit!

Children’s

of Alabama Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children. Annually ranked among the best pediatric medical centers in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Children’s provided care for youngsters from every county in Alabama and 42 other states, representing more than 684,000 outpatient visits and more than 15,000 inpatient admissions last year. With more than 3.5 million square feet, it is one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the United States and offers inpatient and outpatient services across its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional specialty services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd and in Huntsville and Montgomery. Primary care is provided at more than a dozen medical offices in communities across central Alabama. Children’s is the only medical center in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is a private, not-for-profit medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, psychiatry, research and residency programs. The medical staff consists of UAB faculty and Children’s full-time physicians as well as private practicing community physicians. Children’s turned 109 years old this summer. Here’s more about the history of a hospital identified in a 1940s newspaper article as “The Place Where Miracles Happen.” Holy Innocents Hospital for Children, as Children’s was then known, originally operated under the auspices of the Episcopal Church of Alabama. It was founded in 1911 when Rev. Carl Henckell, pastor of All Saints Church of Birmingham, sought a solution to the growing need in his community for quality health care for children, especially those from poor families. Henckell joined Rev. Raimundo de Ovies, rector of St. Andrews Church, and Dr. James E. Dedman, health officer of the City of Birmingham, in founding the organization. The hospital, providing free medical care for all children, opened its doors in 1912 in the All Saints’ small parish house on Birmingham’s Southside. An all-female group of volunteers did whatever was needed to operate the charity hospital, from scrubbing floors to sitting with sick children. The small quarters soon dictated a move for the hospital to a nearby 10-room frame house that could accommodate up to 12 beds. Children’s operated through the generosity of private citizens, civic organizations and the tireless work of volunteers who organized doll bazaars and charity balls as fundraisers. In 1923, Jefferson County’s newly established Community Chest—today’s United Way of Central Alabama—designated Children’s as one of its first beneficiaries. Creating financial stability for the hospital for the first time, the organization reimbursed the hospital for the difference between a patient’s total charge and what his or her family could afford to pay. In 1924, the hospital was able to relocate to a new, two-story brick and concrete building it had built on the corner of 7th Avenue and 30th Street South.

16 The Bridge • October 2020

This $75,000, 50-bed facility gave area children expanded access to the latest medical care with the most caring of providers. And just eight years later, the hospital opened a second building at the site, raising bed capacity by 50 and adding urgently needed surgical facilities, nursing quarters and an outpatient clinic. In 1961, Children’s moved to present location between 6th and 7th Avenue on 7th Avenue South in Birmingham to a four-story, 100-bed facility. In this move, Children’s made an agreement to provide pediatric care for the University of Alabama and University Hospital patients while serving as a learning and teaching resource for the UA School of Medicine. By 1967, UAB had become an independent institution and University Hospital had phased out most of its pediatric beds. Throughout the ’70s, medically historic vaccinations were added to polio vaccine including vaccines for rubella, chicken pox and pneumonia. Once again, Children’s Hospital changed its name and logo. The Children’s Hospital of Alabama better reflected the medical facility’s growing service area beyond Jefferson County. In 1980, the hospital announced its most financially ambitious undertaking, unveiling plans for a $24.5 million expansion to include an eight-story tower and parking deck. The newly expanded facility opened its doors in 1982. In 1983, Children’s joined 20 other pediatric hospitals as an original affiliate of the Children’s Miracle Network (today’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals), which was founded by the Osmond family to benefit children’s hospitals across the nation through fundraising telethons and associated programs. The face of Children’s changed again in 1989 as its lobby was remodeled to welcome visitors in a spacious two-level atrium. A new tower expansion expanded inpatient capacity to 190 beds.

Dr. Jim Dearth, who guided the growth of Children’s for more than 20 years as its chief executive officer, retired in 2007, transferring the responsibility to ensure the hospital’s hallmark superlative care to Birmingham businessman Mike Warren. In 2008, the hospital’s most significant expansion to date was announced. Children’s $100 million “Keeping Promises” capital campaign focused on the addition of 750,000 square feet, which was the largest health care construction project in Alabama. Twenty-five million dollars of those funds were donated by Alexander City’s Ben and Luanne Russell, and the expansion was named the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in honor of Mr. Russell’s grandfather. Further reflecting the area it serves and the services it provides, the organization changed its name to Children’s in 2011. The name change was also in observance and commemoration of the 100th Anniversary in 2011. The expansion enlarged capacity from 275 patient beds to 332 beds plus 48 neonatal intensive care unit bassinets, also made possible the addition of two services: pediatric transplant and pediatric cardiology. The growth over the past century is only a prelude to the medical accomplishments that lie ahead for Children’s during the next 100 years and beyond. Passion, love, hope—all words that have guided the way for Children’s staff and its legion of volunteers since its founding—continue to make a difference in the lives of children in Alabama.

In 1991, a new 190,000 square-foot Ambulatory Care Center (now called the Lowder Building) opened featuring a 12-room surgery suite and a 29-bed, one-day admission center opened. Many of the hospital’s outpatient clients were relocated to this site. A new century of pediatric care dawned in 2000 with the opening of the five-story Children’s Center for Research and Innovation and Children’s Harbor Family Center.
