Daylight saving time ends November 1, and while your phones and computers will automatically “fall back” one hour earlier, you’ll still have to check your other devices -most importantly, your smoke detectors. Safety experts recommend checking two times a year as we change our clocks. It also serves as a valuable reminder to change the batteries in our fire alarms. Only 57% of Americans have followed best practice and done it in the past six months. It’s recommended that we replace the batteries in each detector. Doing it now will also prevent the annoying “chirping” reminder and will assure your devices are working in top condition. Also, keep an eye out for the date of manufacture stamped on the device. Smoke detectors lose their efficiency after 10 years and require replacing just like carbon monoxide alarms. Upgrade to the newer lithium battery smoke detectors and you won’t have to worry about replacing the batteries for up to a decade. Monitoring your home’s safety measures is now more important than ever. The average time to escape a home fire has gone from 17 minutes to just three minutes or less in the past few decades due to the increased use of synthetics in furniture and home construction, according to safety organization UL. Also, don’t forget to inspect your fire extinguisher for any signs of corrosion, missing pull-pins, and/or changes in the pressure gauge. It’s always a good idea to have a working one on hand. Health and safety to everyone!

celebrating the red, white, and blue By Steve Hoisington, Resident Contributor

Officer Robert Reeves

Keeping Us Safe and Informed This month, we recognize and salute police officer Robert Reeves. Officer Reeves is the public information officer of the Irving Police Department. You may have seen and read numerous posts on police-related activities in the newspaper and on Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, etc. Officer Reeves and his department are responsible for these messages. He reports directly to the chief of police and is the communications liaison between the Irving Police Department and the public, including the press. His family is originally from the Dallas area but he grew up in Austin. He graduated from Texas State with a degree in criminal justice and business administration. He wanted to be a police officer since age 5. After graduating from college and faced with several career possibilities, he chose to join the Irving Police Department, where he has excelled and advanced through the ranks the past 17 years. He resides in Irving and is married with a newborn daughter. Officer Reeves is very committed and involved in community events to prevent crime. He has met with leaders of Las Colinas Association (LCA) and the University Hills Association of Homeowners (UHAOH) to help establish a security committee focused on actions and efforts to prevent and reduce crime in the University Hills neighborhood. He is very passionate about his public servant role and his duty to protect and to help others. His advice is to take simple precautions to prevent common crime from happening. In the University Hills neighborhood, property theft from vehicles is the most common crime. If possible, park your vehicles in your garage and keep your garage doors closed. Do not make it easier for criminals to steal from your vehicles. If parked outside, lock your vehicle doors, don’t leave valuables exposed, don’t leave your vehicles running unattended while you run into the store, don’t leave your spare keys inside the vehicle such as the ashtray or glove box. His advice is also to report anything suspicious. Neighbors seem reluctant to call the police until it is too late. It is important that suspicious activities be reported immediately. The nonemergency police phone number to call is (972) 273-1010. You can review all recent crimes in the University Hills neighborhood and other places at www.communitycrimemap.com. This site also allows you to set up alerts regarding recent incidents. Officer Reeves points out that crime has not necessarily gotten worse in our area; it has just become more visible through social media. Also, the types of crime have changed over time. It is now more important than ever to realize that things are not the same as they were years ago. It’s important to lock your doors and to remain vigilant.

We are very fortunate and thankful to have Officer Robert Reeves as part of the Irving Police Department. He is a true hero that is passionate and professional about protecting and serving the neighbors of University Hills, Las Colinas, and the city of Irving. In this segment, we highlight a neighbor who is an active military person, veteran, law-enforcement personnel, first responder, firefighter, doctor, nurse, or any hero who has sacrificed a part of their life for others. Powell family meet the

By Curtis Powell, Resident Contributor

family spotlight

Moved Here Twice!

Curtis and Marjorie moved to University Hills in 1995 shortly after their first daughter, Susannah, was born. Camille came along in 1998. In 2006, after the girls wore out the sidewalk and some driveways on Hidalgo Street playing with neighborhood friends, it was time for the family to move from their first University Hills home. The Powells were such fans of the neighborhood that their big move was only two streets over to La Paz Ct. (following nine months in an apartment with ants during a remodel!).

12 Our Neighborhood Magazine • October 2020

Marjorie and Curtis met and began dating at TCU. The version of who chased who varies depending on which one of them tells the story. Curtis received an MBA from the University of North Texas and Marjorie received an MS from TCU and later a law degree from UT Austin. Marjorie works as a lawyer and Curtis is an executive recruiter. Curtis plays a lot of tennis, and Marjorie likes to work in the yard and ask Curtis to dig up plants and move them to new spots. Â Â Both Susannah and Camille attended the North Hills School in Irving and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, making the Powells a Frogs and Hogs family. Susannah recently returned from serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay where she did agriculture and environmental support work. She now

works for the EPA and will finally move to Washington, DC next month. Camille will graduate in December with a degree in nursing. They love to travel as a family and have recently made trips to South America, including Chile, Paraguay, and Peru to visit Susannah. Beach vacations seem to take the most planning because of Marjorie’s requirement that the ocean water be above 82 degrees and Curtis’ “must-have” of excellent body surfing waves. Many prime sleeping spaces at the Powell house are taken up by their rescue dog, Kendall, and her cat buddy, Olive. If you visit, however, you will not meet Olive because she’ll be under the bed until the coast is clear. Would you like to nominate a future cover family? Let us know!

LONG-TIME IRVING

Dance Studio Saved!

The Rileys

Kids Now Enjoy the New Baila Irving Performing Arts Academy On April 1, Forcher’s Dance Center in Irving announced that after 22 years, it was closing permanently due to the impact of shelter in place. This long-standing school is over 63 years old but owned by only two families: the Rileys and the Forchers. When my husband, Jaime de la Isla, and I received the news, we were devastated. Our daughter was a dancer at Forcher’s for eight years and was also part of Momentum Dance Company, which is Irving’s only professional ballet company. Forcher’s Dance Center had served as the home of Momentum Dance Company for 16 years. The clos-

ing of Forcher’s Dance Center was a devastating loss to our community. It was then that my husband and I decided to spring into action. While it isn’t easy to open a business in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, we couldn’t let our community suffer this kind of loss. We decided to purchase the studio from the Forchers and set forth to rebrand and reopen. Baila Irving Performing Arts Academy began its inaugural year in June of 2020, in the same studio that has called Irving, Texas home for over 63 years. Continuing in the legacy started by the Riley family (see attached picture of the original owners, the Rileys), and most recently by Jacquelyn and Jerry Forcher, Baila Irving is proud to continue to provide excellent dance instruction to this community, providing development and growth opportunities for all dancers. “Baila” (pronounced buy lah) is the Spanish word for “dance” in the verb form. That single word, in any language, describes so much about those that have come to the Rileys’ and Forchers’ over the years. It is what we do, what we share, what we love. Our students and faculty put mind, body, and heart into their craft and we honor each other in the process. Simply put, Baila Irving means “Come Dance Celebrating over 100 years of Montessori Education With Us, Irving!” and 39 years of School Excellence. 2700 Warren Circle, (at Rochelle & Wingren) Irving, Texas 75062 We have been overwhelmed by the outwww.redeemermontessori.org • (972) 257-2517 pouring of support from

our community in coming together for a singular purpose -- to keep the arts alive in Irving and for the family of dancers that come from all parts of North Texas. Whether it has been through picking up a paint roller to bring a new look, grabbing a ladder to fix a damaged ceiling, donating fixtures and supplies, donating time and expertise to plan, remodel, rebrand, or through simple words of encouragement, the rebirth of this studio has been a family affair. From the songs on our doors (created and donated by one of our dads) to the artwork on our walls (designed and created by an art teacher in Irving ISD) to our new studio floors (installed by my husband and another dance dad). I’ve attached a video of the floor being built. Witnessing the love of dance our students and faculty continue to share and express on a daily basis is humbling and truly fulfilling. Seeing our daughter bring that love back home with her every evening and carry it within herself always is a gift from our community that we can never repay. If you would like to see our journey, follow us on Facebook and Instagram. You will see our transformation and the amazing ways our community has embraced us. This has been a work of heart. This studio not only belongs to my family, it belongs to everyone that walks through our doors. We know that we have a long road ahead of us. It has not been easy to run a business during a pandemic, but we hope that we can continue to grow and bring the arts to our beautiful community for another 63 years.

Alexis Brausa, owner

YogaSix Las Colinas is owned and operated by local entrepreneur Alexis Brausa. The first 17 years of Ms. Brausa’s career were spent in corporate America in sales and finance. After moving to Texas in 2013, Alexis decided it was time to pursue a career she was passionate about. She turned toward her love for yoga that began the moment she started to practice 12 years prior in San Diego. When Alexis found out the studio she used to practice at re-branded to YogaSix, she jumped at the opportunity to bring a modern yoga studio to the Las Colinas Community. As a certified health coach, meditation teacher, and lifelong yoga student, Alexis had a vision of creating a space where people can step away from the day-to-day demands of life and reconnect with their mind, body, and breath. “I truly believe that now more than ever, we need modern-day best practices for a healthier lifestyle. Uncertainty, lack of control, and lack of information—these are primary triggers of stress. And, social distancing leads to isolation, loss of our daily routines, and less access to some coping strategies we have learned to lean on. Yoga and meditation have been instrumental in my own ability to navigate life’s challenges and to keep me centered amid the many demands of daily life,” said Alexis. A variety of yoga classes are offered at YogaSix to encompass everything from deep stretching to stress relief to high-intensity training. Offering six core formats – Y6 101, Y6 Restore, Y6 Slow Flow, Y6 Hot, Y6 Power, and Y6 Sculpt and Flow – each class caters to every fitness level and strengthens the mind-body connection. They also offer workshops such as candlelight restorative yoga, foundations of yoga, meditation and mindfulness, hip hop yoga, tween yoga, and more. “Many people have thought about doing yoga, but something that stops them is feeling intimidated by the language, lack of flexibility, or just not knowing how to ‘do’ it. I love that YogaSix has created a teaching methodology that removes those barriers.” Particularly notable is the use of modern language instead of

Sanskrit to describe its practice, as the traditional language can be intimidating to newcomers. The studio provides class options for everyone, from beginners to yoga, athletes and fitness enthusiasts looking for cross-training and muscle recovery, and more advanced yoga students seeking to progress in their practice. “Like so many parents, I also understand the need to juggle daily priorities and responsibilities while raising two kids, caring for an elderly parent, managing a household, and building a business during a wildly uncertain time. Yoga allows me one hour a day where I can give back to myself and reconnect to my purpose; that makes me a better parent, a better daughter, a better partner, and a better friend. I am eternally grateful to have been given the opportunity to provide this same benefit to others.” YogaSix Las Colinas is open seven days a week with classes held within the studio, virtually, outdoors, and on-demand through the Y6 GO app. Monthly memberships are available for four, eight, or unlimited visits per month, as well as drop-in packages. More information about the new studio can be at www.yogasix.com/las-colinas and the studio can be contacted at 972-845-5448. Residents receive Life at the Lakes magazine at no cost each month thanks to our wonderful sponsors. The K9 unit’s primary focus is as a location device to assist police officers, especially in situations or circumstances where it is difficult for a person to access. K9s are deployed on various burglar alarms, area searches, and high-risk traffic stops to increase officer and public safety. K9 officers are assigned to patrol shifts but aid the Irving SWAT and narcotics units, as well as numerous outside federal agencies. Jitsu is the newest addition to the Irving Police Department’s K9 team. Jitsu joined the Irving Police Department in October 2018 after more than two years of extensive training. K9s are given a badge with their own number once they graduate and are added to the force. SECURITY

Enhancing safety and security by deterring intruders with landscape lighting An outdoor lighting system increases the security of a residence in a number of ways. Lighting deters would-be intruders by: 1. Illuminating all entry/exit points of a house and a property 2. Eliminates dark areas and potential hiding spots around a property 3. Gives the illusion of an occupied residence

Home security measures are extremely important for our own safety and the safety of our friends and family. Several studies by criminal justice and criminology organizations across the country of incarcerated burglars have identified what motivates them and if there were any specific deterrents that would convince them otherwise. One of the most commonly mentioned deterrents was a lack of hiding spots available on well-lit properties. Essentially, the most convenient, affordable, and most successful form of home security is proper lighting. Low-voltage landscape lighting provides an affordable and successful way of increasing home security. We asked the Las Colinas Association Security patrol to assess home lighting within our neighborhood and have discovered that many homes are not well lit. Street lights provide some source of lighting but are not adequate for many homes due to heavy overgrowth of trees and shrubs.

An outdoor lighting system can also help prevent unwanted wildlife from entering a premises at night. Just like the age-old trick of keeping a bonfire lit to deter animals while camping, landscape lights can help keep potentially dangerous animals at bay. The Security Committee of the University Hills Association of Homeowners (UHAOH) in conjunction with the Las Colinas Association and the Irving Police Department have identified ways in which you can enhance your own home’s exterior lighting. One option is to install a lighting system yourself. There are several choices available from sources such as Home Depot, Lowes, or Amazon. Details regarding the self-install options are available on the UHAOH website (www.universityhills.net) or by contacting Wolfgang Walther (972.255.1935 or wwalther@universityhills.net). We have also identified a company to install outdoor lighting for you. They are a full-service landscape, lawn care, and outdoor lighting contractor with several neighbor recommendations. They have provided landscape lighting to several high-profile individual’s homes as well as the Las Colinas Country Club. They offer a discount and a 10-year warranty to University Hills residents. Contact Robey Canaday at Complete Landsculpture (214-358-5296 or https://completelandsculpture.com). But no matter what option you choose, please contact the Las Colinas Association Architectural Control Committee for approval. October 2020 • Our Neighborhood Magazine

Home Fire Escape Plan Importa nt Fa mi ly Projec t The Irving Fire Department wants everyone to know the importance of having a home fire escape plan and practicing it with your family. Plan ahead! If a fire breaks out in your home, you may have only a few minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Everyone needs to know what to do and where to go if there is a fire. • Make a home escape plan and discuss the plan with everyone in your home. • Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily. • Have an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) a safe distance from the home where everyone should meet. • Practice your home fire drill at night and during the day with everyone in your home, twice a year. • Practice using different ways out. • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. • Close doors behind you as you leave. • And most importantly -- if the alarm sounds...get out and stay out. Never go back inside for items, people, or pets. Check out www.Sparky.org for fire safety games and activities. October 2020 • Our Neighborhood Magazine

art around us By Anjali and Chandani Reitmeyer, junior resident contributors

“Twist of Fate”

Inspired by Nature “Twist of Fate” is an eye-catching bronze sculpture right here in University Hills. It features a sharp and graceful metal twist that is balanced beautifully on a piece of stone. This sculpture was created by Gilberto Romero in 2008. It was donated and placed in Flag Pole Hill Park by the Las Colinas Parks Foundation. Gilberto Romero is a metal artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is an outdoorsman and often gets his inspiration from nature. He says, “I see shapes everywhere.” He loves to experiment with shape, line, and color in his sculptures. These elements allow freedom and flow in his sculptures as well as an expression of his feelings for his family and nature. To us, this sculpture is intriguing. How can an artist create a sculpture that stands firmly in the ground but when you really look at it you see and feel movement? Your eyes follow the lines easily and it is calming. Interestingly enough, this sculpture even reminds us of the long curly tendrils that shoot out of our cucumber plant in our vegetable garden! You do see these shapes in nature if you look closely. One day, you should come on over to Flag Pole Hill Park and admire this sculpture just like we do! You will see things in nature in a whole new way. Do you have a passion? Let us know. We’d love to share it with the community!

Scam Activity By Michael Basoco, Resident Contributor

is on the rise

Measures to Avoid Scams According to the Federal Trade Commission, scammers are exploiting fears surrounding the coronavirus pandemic to access bank account information, PIN codes or Social Security numbers through illegal robocalls and other nefarious tactics. As a result, Atmos Energy reminds customers to be especially aware of scammers who are posing as public utility representatives. Scammers typically use three strategies, in-person, online or on the phone, to target utility customers’ money, property and personal information. Atmos Energy recommends customers take the following steps to protect themselves from fraud:

Atmos Scam Prevention Website

Employee impostors • Always ask for an employee’s identification badge, which displays their name, photograph and the Atmos Energy logo. • If you suspect an impostor, immediately call the Atmos Energy customer service number at (888) 286-6700 to verify the employee’s identity and contact local authorities. • Beware of impostors demanding payment at your door. Atmos Energy employees will never collect cash payments in person. Email scams • Beware of bogus emails requesting immediate payment of your bill, particularly with prepaid debit cards. • Verify that your account number is listed accurately. • Do not click on any links in the suspicious email, as many contain viruses. • Verify your account balance through the online Atmos Energy Account Center. Telephone scams • Telephone scams also are on the rise, where criminals pose as utility employees and demand immediate payment of past due balances. • If you ever have concerns about the legitimacy of a call, hang up and call Atmos Energy customer service at (888) 286-6700. For more steps to protect your family from fraud, visit the Atmos Energy website by scanning the QR code. October 2020 • Our Neighborhood Magazine
