A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Frida

In Hebrews 10:23, we are reminded of the Lord’s encouragement to all His followers to hold on to our faith in the face of difficulties. Indeed, at the height of the global health pandemic, Zambia as a country went through a very difficult time and suffered great loss due to the impact of COVID-19 on the economy and public health.

But our God is faithful. Amid many challenges, BeitCURE Children’s Hospital of Zambia (CURE Zambia) remained steadfast in its vision to serve children with treatable disabilities. By the grace of God, we were the only hospital that provided elective surgery during the pandemic.

We are committed to serving the most vulnerable children—those who would otherwise not have access to specialized surgery as these services are limited and very expensive. We focus on three specialties: orthopedics; ear, nose and throat; and plastic surgery.

One of our goals for FY22 was to increase the number of surgeries performed at CURE Zambia by 30 percent. Many thanks to our faithful donors and ministry partners, the number of surgeries at our hospital grew by 33 percent. Also, we expanded our reach by conducting outreach programs in rural areas to identify the most vulnerable children and their families.

We continued to build partnerships with local churches that could help strengthen each patient’s spiritual referral pathway after they were discharged from the hospital. We believe that we advance the kingdom of God by honoring these relationships and supporting the spiritual growth of those whom God has put in our care.

That’s why my heart is brimming with gratitude for how God has sustained and strengthened CURE Zambia all these years so we can deliver hope and healing to more and more children in need. He uses generous and compassionate people to do great things for the most vulnerable.

In this new financial year, we will continue to diversify our funding plans by reaching out to various corporations for in-kind support. Above all, we “hold tightly to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep His promises.”

Sincerely,

BUILDING THE FUTURE

Strengthening Audiology and ENT Services in Zambia

Zambia’s Ministry of Health and Beit-CURE Children's Hospital of Zambia (CURE Zambia) are working together to strengthen audiology and ENT healthcare in the country and increase access to quality services for all Zambian children. To attain these goals, the government of Zambia, in partnership with CURE Zambia and with support from Christian Blind Mission, raised awareness about hearing health, invested in infrastructure and equipment, and provided training for surgeons, hearing aid technicians, clinical officers, nurses, and community health assistants.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT BETWEEN

670,000 AND 1 MILLION ZAMBIANS ARE AFFECTED BY HEARING IMPAIRMENT.

CURE Zambia is committed to building the capacity of national medical personnel to identify hearing loss in children as early as possible, reduce its effects, and provide excellent ENT healthcare to patients.

Recently, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development released the results of a four-year project (2017-2021) to improve the quality of ear and hearing care services to underserved communities in Zambia. For the duration of the project, CURE Zambia provided a remarkable 2,263

ear surgeries for people with hearing impairments. This translated to 120% achievement on the initial target of 1,970 surgeries set for the project.

Another major impact was the strengthening of capacities for local healthcare workers, evidenced by the training of three ENT surgeons, four hearing aid technicians, thirty-six clinical officers and nurses, and twenty-eight community health assistants. The training was aimed at providing medical professionals with specialized knowledge and technical skills to diagnose and treat various ENT conditions.

WORLD-CLASS SURGICAL CARE FOR ZAMBIAN CHIDREN

CURE Zambia and Surgicorps International Complete 100+ Surgeries in Week-Long Partnership

This last year, the Beit-CURE Children's Hospital of Zambia (CURE Zambia) hosted four surgeons and over a dozen support staff from Surgicorps International for one week to provide 109 life-changing plastic and reconstructive surgeries for pediatric patients. The entire country of Zambia only has two permanent plastic surgeons to serve the population of 18+ million, meaning the hospital’s three operating rooms were busy all week long.

The strong and strategic partnership between CURE International and Surgicorps International has been transformational for countless children since being established over a decade ago.

“It is always an honor to host the extraordinarily talented teams that Surgicorps assembles for service at our facility,” said Dr. Giorgio Lastroni, Medical Director of CURE Zambia.

I AM VERY PROUD THAT OUR PARTNERSHIP HAS BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE SUCH ESSENTIAL CARE FOR SO MANY OVER THE YEARS.

IT’S A TESTAMENT TO WHAT WE CAN DO WHEN WE ALL WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD.”

“We’ve traveled throughout the world for the past 27 years, providing healthcare for those in need. Our ten trips to CURE Zambia have been exceptional. We’ve been warmly welcomed and our teams have worked extremely well in concert with the CURE staff. We’re proud and honored to partner with an organization such as CURE; their daily work for the people of Africa and the Philippines is exemplary!” said Dr. Jack Demos, founder of Surgicorps International.

CURE Zambia regularly provides free orthopedic, ENT, and audiology care for children suffering with treatable disabilities. Zambian children who require plastic and reconstructive surgeries are able to schedule examinations and surgeries for future Surgicorps visits. Each week-long visit allows 200-350 patients to be seen and 100-150 surgeries to be conducted.

Surgicorps teams consist of about 20 individuals, including surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, occupational therapists, and non-medical support workers. The permanent CURE Zambia staff works closely with the visiting team during the week of examinations and surgeries in order to provide followup care for patients.

This last visit proved to be another great success. CURE International looks forward to continuing its impactful partnership with Surgicorps to provide life-changing surgeries for children for many years to come.

LIFE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Nanga’s Story

Kenny and Esnart are Zambian parents with five children. When their youngest child, Nanga, was two years old, they noticed that she couldn’t walk properly and fell every time she tried to run. When Nanga turned four, Kenny and Esnart saw that she had developed bowed legs. They didn’t think much of it because their second daughter had the same condition that resolved on its own. But a few years later, Nanga’s disability had not improved much.

Nanga’s parents were disheartened. “It was a huge burden on us because it looked like she would never do anything in life,” shares Kenny. “It reached a point where she would crawl her way to the bedroom. All her friends left her.”

Desperate for help, Kenny and Esnart took Nanga to a district hospital. Nanga was seen by a visiting surgeon who, after some initial assessment, decided to operate on her legs. However, no follow-up reviews happened after the surgery because the surgeon never returned to the hospital. Not long after, Nanga’s legs started to curve outward again, and the disability progressed, causing Nanga more discomfort and pain.

When Nanga was in fifth grade, the pain in her legs had become so unbearable that she missed many days of school. But just as painful were the mocking words she heard from people in the neighborhood.

Even at church, Nanga preferred to sit alone to avoid people.

But just when Nanga’s family thought hope was gone, a cousin found Beit-CURE Children's Hospital of Zambia (CURE Zambia) on Facebook. She contacted CURE Zambia and received information on bringing a patient to the hospital.

With no time to waste, 11-yearold Nanga and her parents took a trip to CURE Zambia, where the staff warmly welcomed them. Dr. Lastroni and Dr. Muntanga examined Nanga and scheduled her surgery for the next day. After the surgery, Nanga stayed in the hospital ward for two days before being discharged with the doctor’s order to return after a month for a check-up.

During her follow-up visit, the doctor removed the casts on Nanga’s legs. One month later, the X-ray showed that Nanga’s bones were intact, and everything was in place. The surgeon assured Kenny and Esnart that Nanga’s condition had been corrected and that she could now participate in any activities, including playing football.

Kenny and Esnart were overjoyed. “At times, I would think I wasn’t in Zambia because the services are excellent, starting with how the workers received us until the time we left. They really took good care of us,” shares Kenny.

Today, Nanga is 14 years old and in sixth grade. She can run, play football, and help with household chores without experiencing any pain in her legs. Her friends are back, and she started going to church again.

HER LIFE IS HEADING

The family is filled with gratitude to God. “CURE Zambia should continue with the same spirit of taking care of patients so that many more will have the privilege of being served,” says Kenny. “The Lord alone will bless everyone.”

Nanga's smile came back as her confidence grew during her treatment at CURE Zambia!
