A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Elly

The fiscal year 2022 (FY22) was our first full year of operations under a bold new strategic direction focusing more on pediatrics, with a plan to exit adult care by December 2022. The plan— developed in line with CURE International’s strategic direction and with active participation from local stakeholders—represents a honing and refining of our mission, vision, and approach. It builds on close to two decades of experience and commitment to providing high-quality surgeries to children in Malawi. Our strategic plan commits us to organizational excellence, putting learning and partnership at the center of our success. Those commitments span everything we do, which means we learn from our work with the Ministry of Health at the national and district levels. We are also more robust in reaching more people with the gospel because of our partnership with the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) and our engagement with various groups and NGOs in Malawi. Their stories inspire us, and their partnership and collaboration motivate us.

As we adopted the new strategic direction, we devised a phased-up approach to reach more children with treatable disabilities while slowly phasing-out adult surgeries. Because of the solid strategic plan, our co-workers and teams could pivot quickly, working closely with local organizations, healthcare providers, government, and communities to adjust how we

delivered on shared goals. We aim to reach every district in Malawi in the next three years.

As we reflect on the data inside these pages and continue to implement the work, we do so in a renewed environment where quality is paramount as we implement SafeCare Standards.

With this report, we are pleased to share data and stories that provide an overview of the progress we made in FY22 toward that vision. That progress is possible because of our supporters and partners— individual donors, institutional funders, implementing partner organizations, the Malawi government, and more. In the face of countless challenges, we are moving ahead to do all that we can to expand access to surgery and reach more families with the gospel for the kingdom of God.

Thank you for how you help CURE Malawi deliver on that vision.

With God’s blessings,

COMMITTED TO BUILDING THE FUTURE

CURE Malawi and Ministry of Health Strengthen Partnership

In June, Beit-CURE Children’s Hospital of Malawi (CURE Malawi) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) of Malawi signed an amended memorandum of understanding outlining both parties’ commitment to improving access to comprehensive and quality healthcare in Malawi.

Primarily, CURE Malawi with support from MoH, Malawi Against Physical Disability (MAP), and private donors will scale up the number of services it currently provides with a particular focus on orthopedic services, the introduction of plastic surgery services, and the training of healthcare workers.

“The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to enhance efforts to increase access and treatment for children with correctable disabilities in Malawi. This MoU will also be significant in paving the way for future collaborations to overcome critical development and capacity challenges that both CURE and the Malawi government have identified,” says Elly Chemey, CURE Malawi Executive Director.

The MoH has identified orthopedic and plastic surgery as priority programs and has acknowledged CURE Malawi’s capacity to provide these speciality services and train national doctors.

“LIFE-ALTERING SERVICES ARE BEING OFFERED HERE AT BEIT-CURE.

GOD BLESS YOU ABUNDANTLY,”

said Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, Mp. Hon. Minister of Health, at a recent visit to the hospital. This collaboration allows for a long-term solution to improve the Malawian people’s health.

PURSUING EXCELLENCE FOR CHILDREN

Critical Medical Equipment for High-Quality Sponsored Care

The Beit Trust, based in the UK, has been a significant partner to CURE International in its mission to provide hope and healing to children in need across sub-Saharan Africa. Their support has been instrumental in the opening and improving of CURE’s hospitals in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Recently, The Beit Trust elevated its impact by donating medical equipment to standardize CURE Malawi operating rooms, allowing even more children to receive excellent pediatric care. This generous gift will enable thousands of children in the future—many not even born yet—to live a life without physical disabilities.

said Justin Narducci, President and CEO of CURE International. “We are grateful to The Beit Trust for making significant new investments in our operations which will allow us to continue to provide high-quality, sponsored care for thousands of children.”

Two refurbished C-arms and accompanying X-ray equipment will allow medical professionals to understand conditions more closely and precisely treat patients suffering from broken or malformed bones. New surgical tables and tools will enable the operating theater to reach new heights in quantity and quality of care.

Executive Director Elly Chemey says, “We are continuously grateful to The Beit Trust for donating medical equipment to us. This donation included a critically needed C-arm that enabled our surgeons to monitor the progress of the highly specialized surgeries they perform and make decisions accordingly. The C-arm they donated has fluoroscopy technology that enables the machine to provide realtime, high-resolution X-ray images.”

CURE Malawi performs over 1,500 surgical procedures in a typical year thanks to its world-class staff and a 58-bed ward. The teaching hospital is the only hospital in sub-Saharan Africa recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Established in 2002 with the help of The Beit Trust, the two organizations celebrate their 20 years of partnership to provide free, high-quality care to children.

THE HUMAN IMPACT OF THIS DONATION BY THE BEIT TRUST IS IMPOSSIBLE TO QUANTIFY,”

In 1906, The Beit Trust was established by the will of financier and philanthropist Alfred Beit “for the benefit of the people in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.” For over 100 years, The Beit Trust has funded various initiatives across southern Africa, including everything from building hospitals and bridges to supporting scholarships and wildlife conservation.

Without The Beit Trust, thousands of children in Africa would still be suffering from treatable disabilities today. Their significant actions have allowed CURE International to succeed in its mission to bring hope and healing to children who need it most.

The Beit Trust is a UK-based partner of CURE International that helps to fund initiatives that improve the lives of children in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

HOPE & HEALING FOR EDA

Simple childhood accidents can become lifelong disabilities in places with scarce medical resources. This scenario could have been the case for Eda, a charming and resilient 14-year-old girl from Malawi, who fell one day and unknowingly broke her right arm and leg. A couple of days later, she began to feel intense pain and could not walk or move her arm. Eda needed immediate medical attention, but unfortunately, she had to wait two months before she got admitted to a hospital.

Even as Eda was experiencing extreme physical pain, the social rejection hurt just as badly. People in Eda’s village ridiculed and judged her. They even told her to drop out of school because of her disability.

These are the barriers that children with disabilities encounter. Pain. Immobility. Rejection. It is estimated that 90% of these children do not attend school. Yet Eda remained strong and did not give up.

“The only way I can make it in this life is through education, and I knew what I wanted, so I kept going and worked hard at school,” says Eda.

Finally, Eda was referred to CURE Malawi. When she arrived, the doctors quickly addressed the bone infection and scheduled her for surgery. Her operation was four hours long. Bone infections are unpredictable and hard to manage, so preventing the infection from spreading can be extremely difficult. For Eda’s bones to heal correctly, the wound site remained open so the nurses and doctors could keep an eye on the infection. However, the discomfort and pain didn’t faze Eda; she knew what God had in store for her.

“What I loved most about CURE was how the team welcomed us, cared for us, and had a very nice and clean bed, but on top of that, the people love to pray!

“MY LIFE AT CURE WAS AMAZING. I CAME TO KNOW JESUS AND HAVE FAITH IN HIM. THROUGH THAT FAITH, I WAS HEALING, AND MY LIFE IS [CHANGED].
I AM HAPPIER, AND MY FUTURE IS HOPEFUL!”

After months of surgeries, recovery, and physical therapy, Eda finally went home. More than two years later, she was walking and running.

“I’m very happy because my bone has joined together, and now I am able to walk. Before my mom used to carry me everywhere. I’m so glad that I came to CURE,” says Eda.

SIX YEARS LATER

It’s been six years since Eda first arrived at CURE Malawi. Since then, she’s done wonderful things, like finishing her 12th-grade exams and enrolling in nursing school! When asked what she plans to do next, Eda says,

Your support changes the lives of many children like Eda. Today, she can walk and pursue her dreams for further schooling, and she walks with Jesus, who makes a hopeful future possible.

“I WOULD LOVE TO WORK AT CURE! THAT WOULD BE MEANINGFUL FOR MY LIFE AS WELL AS MY FAMILY’S.
IF THAT HAPPENS, I CAN BE A TESTIMONY TO MANY OTHERS OUT THERE.”
