Introduction
Martin Mak, Xixia Wang, Ivy Liu So Ling
We have written this book to help you develop your communication skills in Mandarin. It supports the Cambridge IGCSE™ Mandarin Chinese (0547) syllabus for examination from 2028; materials have been written based on real-life contexts, and real-life materials have been chosen in order to give you a taste of culture along with language.
The book has 25 main units, grouped under five topic areas: Everyday Activities, Personal and Social Life, The World Around Us, The World of Work and International World, as well as a welcome unit. Each topic area has 3–7 sub-topics, each of which constitutes a unit, and you will find material to cover listening, reading, speaking and writing under each sub-unit.
This book has been written for beginners. Therefore, from Units 1 to 5, pinyin and English meanings for questions and instructions are provided. However, they are gradually reduced in the later units, and there will be no pinyin and English meanings for the questions and instructions to support you in your studies at Cambridge IGCSE level.
You will need to take an active role in your learning. Following the sequence of our activities will reinforce your language learning and expand your Mandarin vocabulary to help you become a more fluent reader. We introduce sentence structures in each unit to help you improve your writing. It is important that you complete all the exercises as they will help you develop your communication skills in Chinese. We have also written a Workbook, which contains further activities.

Chinese names
• When Chinese people introduce themselves, they give their family name first, followed by their given name. For example, 王小云 ’s family name is 王 and her given name is 小云 . In English, however, she would be called ‘Xiaoyun Wang’.
• The most commonly used family names are 王 (Wáng), 李 (Lǐ ), 张 (Zhāng), 刘 (Liú) and 陈 (Chén), and most are only one character. There are usually 1–2 characters in given names, often with positive meanings. For example, 伟 (Wěi ‘Great/Heroic’), 芳 (Fāng ‘Fragrant’), 丽 (Lì ‘Beautiful’), 明 (Míng ‘Bright’).
• Use of 小 / 大 in names:
小 (Xiǎo ‘little’) is used affectionately or in childhood names. For example, 小云 (Xiǎo yún ‘Little Cloud’).
大 (Dà ‘big’) adds emphasis. For example, ( 大伟 Dà wěi ‘Big Hero’).
• Some general rules:
1 Never split a two-character given name.
2 Avoid using someone’s given name on its own. Use their full name, 王小云 , or family name + title, 王老师 (Wáng lǎo shī ‘Teacher Wang’). Calling a senior by their full name is considered disrespectful in Chinese.
