The colour of the card border shows the framework step in which the sound is taught.
Step 2 (32 cards)
Step 3 (20 cards)
Step 4 (24 cards)
How to use the flashcards
1 Introduce the sound
• Hold up the letter(s) side of the flashcard and say the sound clearly.
• Ask children to repeat the sound.
• Say the example word shown on the picture side of the flashcard. The example demonstrates the sound being used in a word (‘ssss . . . sad’).
2 Practise regularly
• Go through a few flashcards daily.
• Mix new sounds with known sounds.
3 Engage multiple senses
• Ask children to finger trace or skywrite the letter while saying the sound.
• Include actions or hand movements for each sound.
• Match the sound to a real object or image when possible.
Top tips
• Keep sessions short and fun.
• Use lots of praise and encouragement.
• Repeat activities to build confidence and mastery.
• Say the sound not the letter name – for example, say ‘sss’ not ‘ess’. Try not to say ‘uh’ at the end of a sound – for example, say ‘mmm’ not ‘muh’.
