I didn’t think I would get to this point, but I’ve been daily peering out my windows in search of the smallest signs of Spring, thinking I can hurry its arrival with wishful thinking. I’ve always loved the cold and the beauty of snow, but there’s a perpetual chill in my bones and a longing for the sun that I simply can’t ignore any longer. So to cheer myself up I chose something bright and colorful, lemon curd!

{makes approximately 16 oz} [ingredients] 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 6 lemons 1 cup sugar 4 eggs 4 egg yolks 12 tbsp unsalted butter 2 clean, sterilized glass jars [directions] Combine. Place all of the ingredients into a medium sized sauce pan, and heat over a low temperature, stirring continually with a rubber spatula to prevent the curd sticking to the bottom of the pan. The curd is ready when it is the consistency of fudge, and leaves a trail when you drizzle some off the back of the spatula. You don’t want it to reach boiling point.

Store. Remove the pan from the heat and pour the curd through a fine metal sieve into a bowl to strain out any little bits of egg that have become scrambled in the heating process. Decant the curd into your sterilized jars and enjoy immediately on some fresh buttered toast, or perhaps an english muffin!

All About the Color Over-highlighted hair is out. When it comes to your hair color think soft, blended tones and honey hues.

If you insist on continuing to do highlights, consider starting the highlights about 4-5 inches down from root for a softer ombre-like effect. A good rule-ofthumb is to stay within 2 shades lighter (or darker) than your natural color, that way the color variations don’t become too streaky. Now is a great time to start transitioning to the more one-colored look, as it may take 1-3 appointments to blend out your highlights the correct way.

Chop that hair!

Say goodbye to long locks and embrace chic and effortless shorter hairstyles. Everybody is doing it, from the likes of seasoned celebs like Charlize Theron down to the new-comers like Jennifer Lawrence. Short hair is classy and ladylike. While some celebrities have gone to the extreme, you can stay at a short fresh length by trying a layered cut that hits just past your collar bone. It is a fun and chic look. If your a little bit more rock and roll add some bangs for edge! Either way it is time ditch those dead ends and straggly strands! Trust us, it is freeing! Taking less time to look your best is just an added perk in losing your length. So, what are you waiting for?

The Ponytail Trend

Time to leave the topknot behind! Try opting for the wispy ponytail trend instead, it doesn’t take more than 5 minutes. Tousled ponytails are this summer’s go-to, and it makes for great use of yesterday’s leftover hairstyle!

How to: 1. Put dry shampoo powder at the roots to take away grease from unwashed hair, this will also help add volume at your scalp to get a more effortless romantic feel.

2. Tease your hair a tiny bit through the crown.

3 Put in a loose ponytail right in the back of your head - don’t get it too high.

4. Once the ponytail is secure take rub your temples with your palms.

This will loosen natural tendrils and make them fuzz up.

5. Use your fingers to smooth any pieces that look too wild. You can also pull some sections that are pulled back too tight.

6. Use a really light hold aerosol hairspray to keep the volume on the wispy pieces it also helps keep them in place.

It’s Beauty 101! Fashion and Beauty director, Katlyn sits down to get your most-asked beauty questions -- ANSWERED!

Q. What is the best method to get soft curls, with a curling iron?

A. The secret is two curls around the barrel. That’s all. So if your hair is long wind the hair around the entire barrel, medium length is BEST for this!

Q. I have short lashes - what’s the best method to make them appear longer?

A. Using a brush with thin, hairlike bristles. Smashbox Full Exposure is my go-to mascaras, I swear by it because I have this issue as well.

Also - I always do like 4 coats...no matter the mascara!

Q. Let’s be serious -- do makeup primers really do anything?

Yes! A primer, which you should always apply to your whole face before foundation helps makeup last! Makeup is less likely to smear as primer absorbs oil! Psst...it fills in wrinkles and those fine lines too!

Q. Should I toss my lipgloss after a cold?

A. No way! Not unless you have strep - strep is the only virus that seems to survive longer than most.

Q. How often do I need to clean my makeup brush?

A. Once a month, at least. Use the DIY method I’ve shared on cupcakeMAG.com before and if you’re in a rush blow dry the brushes.

Casi: First off -- how are you? Besides quick email - it’s been forever since we chatted! What’s new?

C: You always look amazing! Always. Tell us your beauty secrets and your favorite ways to work out.

Jilly: A LOT is new! I’ve made many New Years resolutions which I have rarely stuck with - but this year - I decided I needed a real big change. Over the last few years I am so grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have come my way - but, with the ‘seize the opportunity while I can’ attitude - I found myself getting busier and busier more concerned with social media, donating time, saying YES YES YES to everything. But I also found myself more tired, laughing less and becoming a serious party pooper…..which I was NOT loving. Of course one of the ‘yeses’ was starting a new company Charlie Ford which while it was my all time dream… it demanded more work, energy and capital than I would have ever ‘dreamed’. While all of this was happening I bought what I thought was my dream home only to find out I got duped by the previous owners and inspector and was left with literally thousands of dollars worth of repair. We had cancer in the family which tore our hearts up and so - 2013 needless to say wasn’t my best year. There were a lot of tears, a lot of heartaches and sleepless nights. One the first week of January 2014 Justin went to Mexico, I went back to work in Vancouver and I had a lot of time to just think. Thats when I decided I wanted to make a big change. I am so HAPPY to say I feel better than EVER!! The house is all fixed, we have let go of our anger towards the people involved. The family is healthy and I have made some big changes to allow me to be ME, not just a business woman. I have the pleasure of saying NO more, committing to less without feeling guilty, sleeping in more, exercising lots, eating healthy and working on being ‘funny’ again. Feels pretty damn good. I think 2014 will be my year! Not necessary for success but for happiness which means lots of time with family, less work, more sleep and more giggles. CAN’T WAIT!

J: (laughs) umm I don’t ALWAYS look amazing. TRUST ME. I have recently started working out with a trainer Rachel Doell - she has just launched a new site called Daily Routine Fitness which I use religiously while I’m on the road - that friendship has helped me tons with my health.

I also started yoga about 6 months ago and LOVE LOVE the hot yoga - its like going to the therapist, the spa and the gym in 60 minutes. (laughs) I also LOVE superfoods. I LOVE KALE , I think I eat pretty balanced and so i think that helps! Check out my website for some of my favorite beauty products here.

C: What are you just dying to buy for Spring?

J: All I want is to finish the renovation - the last piece of the puzzle is a built in entertainment unit which I am now saving up for. Other than that - all i want is to spend time with my family and work on the yard with a cold beer! :) C: When you get time to relax, what’s your favorite way to take a breather?

J: It’s so lame. I love cleaning the house and organizing. I love cooking & traveling. Yoga is in there too.

C: You’ve made your name as an interior designer and you are ever-so-talented. What’s your favorite room to decorate and why? What are your home decor essentials?

J: My new favourite is the kitchen as i just re- did mine.

just how she did -- no crazy diets here. Yes -- in just 11 months Diana lost 100 pounds. And yes, you are reading correct. One hundred pounds. Some kind of amazing right? We couldn’t wait to sit down with her so she could give us the scoop on just how she did it.

She’s not just an avid runner -- she’s a goal seeker.

Breakfast Protein shake with banana and some peanut butter.

Lunch Turkey sandwich on wheat bread, some sort of fruit, usually strawberries.

I also will eat some nuts and snack on those between lunch and dinner.

Dinner Ground Turkey seasoned with some vegetables.

Usually I will eat some broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, just whatever I have on hand.

Note: This is just a typical day for me but sometimes I incorporate turkey burgers or chicken for dinner instead of ground turkey.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday

I run at least 5 miles whether that be outside or on a treadmill. I also incorporate some sort of weight lifting.

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I still do cardio, but its usually Zumba, eliptical or bike. I still include weight training, but will alternate arms and legs between days.

I make sure I drink at

80 ounces

least of water a day.

Make goals for yourself that are obtainable. If you want to lose a lot of weight, its easy to get overwhelmed by that number. Set weekly goals, like lose 2 lbs or be able to run a faster mile.

That way you stay motivated for longer.

Allow yourself a cheat meal once a week. This allows you to still indulge, but once a week won’t hurt. Be really good all week, but remind yourself that Saturday night you get your favorite treat that you have been craving.

Reward yourself with things other than food. You may say, well wait a minute you just said I could have cheat meal. Yes, you can! But reward yourself with other things besides food. That way, new clothes or getting your nails done will be more interesting than your favorite dessert.

Workout for the Woman

on the Go in just 15 minutes

By Alissa Circle A year ago this past February, I was at a point in my life where I was busy, stressed out, juggling the work/life and mom/wife balance all the while feeling really down on myself. I’ve never been an avid exerciser, although I was a dancer and ice skater growing up, so I knew the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, I just needed to make some choices to let go of some of my excuses and start doing it!

A good friend of mine, Cristina Robeck (who also took all the amazing pictures for this article), had found a bootcamp that she loved and had been trying to convince me to join.

I really didn’t want to, but I was out of excuses because the Bootcamp met at the community center doors down from my house! So I went… and it was hard! Really hard! And I spend the first several weeks so sore!! Then something incredible happened, I gained a new, healthy addiction and I suddenly I began noticing myself getting stronger, loosing inches and feeling better about myself inside and out than I had in years. This inspired me to look into other areas of my life that needed a healthy change. I began cooking more meals at home, many from scratch, using all fresh herbs and seasonings. We began buying fruits and vegetables and our meat and fish from the local Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.

The combination of working out 3-5 times a week and

eating healthier has made a huge difference for me! Now, a year later, I’ve lost almost 13 inches off my body from head to toe and I’ve lost almost 8 pounds, but you know what I’ve gained that’s even more important? Confidence! I feel good about myself and that, in turn, makes me a better wife, mother, friend, and business woman.

I enlisted the help of my amazing trainer, Ambia Rossiter, and she helped me create a workout that can be done at home, inside or outside, using a chair or bench or even the curb outside your home and, the best part, it can be done while your kids are running in circles around you -- best part? Just takes 15 minutes. If you work full time, you can do this during your lunch hour. This is a whole body workout with 2-3 options for each exercise so as you feel yourself getting stronger, you can challenge yourself. I recommend doing 3 reps of this workout, which would total 45 minutes.

I’ve also included my favorite workout playlist to get your motivated to get started. So y’all let’s cut out those excuses, download some good songs and let’s workout!

Are you ready?

Exercise 1 • TRICEP DIPS: 20 Reps Find a chair or bench. Place your hands on the edge of the bench, keeping your arms straight and put your feet, knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Slowly bend those elbows to dip your bootie towards the ground, then push back up to straighten those arms out. That’s one, let’s go for 20!

Exercise 3 • ABS: 20 Reps

Start with your legs out 6 inches off the ground, then bring both knees in towards your chest, then push them back out again.

Exercise 5 • SQUATS: 20 Reps Place your feet shoulder width apart and squat that bootie down, tucking it under and then straightening out your legs.

That’s one, we’ve got 19 to go! Keep up the great work!

Exercise 2 • PUSH UPS: 15 Reps Push ups on the ground. In plank position, hands in line with your shoulders, drop and give me 15!

Exercise 4 • LUNGES: 20 Reps

Stand with one foot in front of the other. Your weight should be on your front foot as you lunge. Squat down so that back knee touches the ground and then push back up with your legs. Go for 20 reps on each leg. As my trainer, Ambia, always says, “ dirty knees equal clean lunges.”

Texting a picture or posting one on Facebook or instagram is one thing, but the thought of actually doing something tangible with those photos that you’re taking? Let me guess your stress levels just shot up a bit, right?

I hear you. I get it. And with all of my heart, I understand why some people shy away from the very idea of scrapbooking. I mean - it’s expensive and time-consuming and only really for super creative people with 2 kids, a white picket fence, and a lot of extra time … right?

Actually - Project Life® has changed many people’s minds about what scrapbooking is all about. You may have heard that this system is a life saver, the bee’s knees, the best thing since sliced bread. Who am I to disagree? There’s a reason that this back-to-basics, solution-based system has changed the scrapbooking landscape. Getting your photos and memories off your cell phone or computer and into a book does not have to be all-consuming or intimidating at all. Gone are the days that we have to feel that self-inflicted guilt for not preserving the memories that are so dear to us.

1. Be realistic. Don’t feel like you have to do it all at once. Just start with one topic or time period - like a recent trip, or last year’s family pictures, or your wedding from years ago. Pick one theme and stay focused on just that.

2. Just start. The first step is to gather pictures into one place - whether it’s getting those physical prints and memorabilia into a box, or gathering digital pictures for your project into a folder on your computer.

3. Keep it simple. Scrapbooking does not have to be about layout design or creative embellishments. You really only need 3 items to complete an entire 12” x 12” scrapbook — 1) the album itself, 2) a Project Life® Core Kit, and 3) a Big Pack of Project Life® Photo Pocket Pages. Notice I didn’t even mention scissors or adhesive. Nope - don’t need them. For real.

4. Get those photos printed.

There are so many ways to get those photos off your computer or cell phone so that you have actual prints. Technology will continue to change, but a tangible book that you can hold in your hands? That’s priceless stuff right there. Print your photos, my friend.

5. Schedule it in. Think you’re too busy to scrapbook? Perhaps you haven’t discovered just how speedy Project Life scrapbooking really is.

The process involves slipping photos and pre-designed journaling cards into Photo Pocket Pages. It doesn’t get easier - or faster - than that. Block off an hour this weekend and you might surprise yourself with how much you get done.

6. Try it on a smaller scale.

Sometimes the 12” x 12” size feels too big, and I can appreciate that.

7. The little stuff matters. If you go searching “Project Life” on Pinterest, or the #ProjectLife hashtag on instagram or twitter, that’s fine if you want to be inspired by what

people are doing. But I promise you that you’ll be quickly overwhelmed if you’re looking too closely. Avid scrapbookers and creative paper-crafters love Project Life too, but that doesn’t mean that you have to feel like all the embellishing that you’ll undoubtedly see is necessary. I personally add ZERO embellishments to my own Project Life albums. In my world, simple = done. Plus, this allows my photos to be the super stars on every page.

I’m a firm believer that when we take the time to document life (whether it be through taking pictures, writing in a journal, or actually getting those memories into a scrapbook) — we are more clearly reminded of just how blessed we are, even during the most difficult times. When we record life, we are more inclined to cultivate a better life.

Want to’s, Need to’s and Have to’s My son’s birthday falls two days after Valentine’s Day - a holiday that traditionally means very little to our family, but has now become a day to celebrate our special little “party

of three.” This year, as the big days approached, I wanted to be sure the entire week was full of special memories and experiences. I dreamed of a sweet little heart-shaped pancake breakfast awaiting my two Valentine’s when they woke on Valentine’s Day. But let’s be serious. How on earth was I going to make that happen with a laundry list of to-dos with family coming into town, Brady’s firetruck birthday party and his actual family birthday dinner; not to mention a business to run, bedtimes to make happen and, of course, my own hair to wash every now and then. I quickly become overwhelmed as the to-dos seemed to drag me down to the floor in a disastrous heep of “I-can’t-do-allthis!”

As usual, when I am overwhelmed, I grabbed whatever paper was around me and dumped my entire brain. It was a Target receipt that end up decorated with all my to-dos on the back of it. I took my Target receipt back home and on a big notepad, made three lists for the week. On the left side - my HAVE to’s (things that HAVE to get done or the world will stop spinning, you know the ones I’m talking about laundry, dinner on the table in one form or another, birthday gifts wrapped). In the second column I wrote out my NEED to’s (those tasks next in line to the HAVE to’s - I needed to pick up the dry cleaning, but that could wait if it had to). In the last column, I listed my WANT to’s (naturally, this

column was the most full - I wanted to drive twenty minutes to the specialty party store to get that super cute red heart balloons for Valentine’s Day breakfast but it was neither a HAVE to or a NEED to - just something that would make the morning extra special).

Once I took everything out of my brain and put it on paper, I was able to take a breath and realize it could all be done and in the proper order. If some of my want-to’s didn’t happen, the week would still go off without a hitch. I started distributing my have-to’s across the days of that week in my Simplified Planner. Next came my have-to’s. I left a few of those off that wouldn’t really have an impact on how the week played out. And lastly, I listed my want-to’s.

Knowing my need-to’s and have-to’s were taken care of, I was able to find the calmer spots of my schedule and pencil these in.

I’m afraid I’d fallen under the Pinterest-spell: the notion that A) Pinterest-worthy celebrations are the only your children will remember and that B) meaningful experiences

are supposed to happen without any effort at all. I’m just supposed to automatically have all the ingredients for heart shaped pancakes in my pantry because that’s what good moms do.

I’m smiling as I write this because I learned a big lesson last week. Incredible memories and experiences take preparation. We have to do the work ahead of time to set ourselves up for success. Heart shaped pancakes were served on paper plates (not the cute pink ones I’d envisioned) with a single red heart balloon (found at the grocery store!) tied to my little guy’s chair. It was the perfect breakfast.

When we start being intentional with our time and strategic with our to-dos, magic starts to happen. That’s when we’re able to make the special, perhaps-not-Pinterest-worthy memories our children will carry with them forever - even if the pancakes are lopsided little hearts or you ran to the store in your PJs to buy Bisquick in the middle of the night on February 13. You made what matters happen. That’s the good stuff.

Susan: When we filmed the episode, I felt like it went well but waiting to see how they edited my segment was torture.

It’s the weirdest thing where I feel like nothing has changed and yet everything has changed. The one thing that has changed the most is that we have way more emails!

Q from @thescribblepad: On Shark Tank, you bring up a heated topic for some about moving manufacturing overseas. But, “American Made” has been part of your selling point. What does this decision process look like when transition from a home based business to something significantly larger?

It’s a very tricky and very delicate process. I had searched the country high and low for a cut and sew that could make my moccs and always came up empty handed. However!

Shark Tank was so helpful and we’ve been able to find additional US manufactures. 100% of our moccasins are made in America.

Balance is a myth and I really don’t think that it exists for working moms! My focus is on my choices and whether or not something that I am doing outside of work is taking me away from my family. I try really hard to say no, more than I say yes.

ICalendar....haha. But really, the most important part of leading a team and owning a business is delegating. You not only have to let other people help you, but you have to let them make mistakes and learn. Tips from the master The biggest tip to other small business owners, is HIRE SOMEONE. Having a second pair of eyes, whether they are your assistant, your pack+shipper, or your customer service rep, it’s always amazing what lightening your load can do for your creative mind. It sounds daunting to trust someone else, and to take on an additional expense, but if you hire someone who you can work well with, and can delegate to easily, it will pay for itself.

Know your audience, know where they shop, know when they shop there, and how they do it. All that information is absolutely vital to marketing and branding your business.

Say no, often. You can’t say yes to everyone and everything. People always want to know how to make their work life and personal life balance, and saying no really is key to that. Some days (most days) I have to tell Eli he has to hang out with his nanny instead of me, but on Fridays, my staff knows it’s my mom-son day. I take him to breakfast, we go on an adventure, and I’m sure to spoil him rotten (both in affection, and cupcakes).

1.) What started The Printed Palette. Tell us the story!

I have always had the passion for design. In the process of searching for my calling, I became a certified event planner and interior designer. I put these things on hold to move to San Diego and help my best friend run a custom screen printing company. We did custom screen printing for close to seven years before The Printed Palette was

even a thought. It was definitely challenging and while I love a challenge, I did not love the stress and uncertainty.

Between the stresses of employees and customers, working myself to the bone, and not being able to be creative, I knew something needed to change. I remember the night like it was yesterday. I tossed and turned and was frustrated that I couldn’t sleep. I remember saying out loud “why God, why?”. It was the first time my head hit the pillow in a good 32 hours, so why couldn’t I sleep? God knew. The Printed Palette was born on a night of insomnia. I made 8-10 unisex designs, fashioned them on t-shirt templates, and opened up an Etsy shop. I thought, “if people like it, they will buy it” and had a “let’s see what happens” attitude. When I woke up the next morning, I mean afternoon,

“Little girls with dreams become women with vision” I saw that I had sold eight shirts. Eight! Eight people within a span of 6-7 hours spent money on something that I just put out there. For the next few months I would slowly design some more, adding women’s designs when I could.

But that thing called a job (even though my own company) had to take priority. It took me a couple more months to find a balance (I use this word lightly) and pass on some of my work to employees so I could focus more on designing. Applications for the Queen Bee Market came out, and I immediately signed up. As soon as I was approved for a booth, I added baby and kids clothing, pillow covers ,trucker hats, and tote bags. I was ready to show the world (or anyone coming to QBM) who The Printed Palette was.

Little did I know, the world did come. The blogging world.

By the end of the show, one blogger posted a photo of her son on Instagram and before I knew it I had 500 new followers in a day. That’s huge compared to the 248 I had at the time. Next thing I knew, I was getting emails from tons of bloggers wanting to work with me to feature our goods on their blogs. I was also being talked about as “one of the best new baby & kids brands”. Naturally, this became my focus. This became my passion. I had found my calling.

2.) What made you decide to open a store front?

Plans to be in a retail space were non-existent when the opportunity popped up. I think in my head I thought that it was definitely a goal I wanted to accomplish within five years. Time had come to look for a new place to live and we stumbled upon these super cool live/work lofts. Know-

ing this was a possibility suddenly made me realize that having my own store wasn’t a goal. It was a dream. Kurt, my best friend and business partner, stopped at nothing to support me and we made it happen.

3.) What’s the best thing about being your own boss?

The best thing about being my own boss is the freedom of choice. The choice of knowing I am in control of the next move that our company makes. The choice of knowing that if I make a great decision I can be happy and proud of myself, or knowing that if I make a mistake that I will learn from it. And mostly the choice that I am doing this in the first place. I am a leader, I am a woman with vision, and I am making this happen. “Little girls with dreams become women with vision”.

4.) However, there is always a downfall. What seems to be a challenge and how do you make it work?

Ironically, the most difficult thing for me as a business owner is that I have to set my own schedule. There is no one here to tell me what to do and when to get it done.

This, along with the adorable littles that walk into the store every day, can make me very easily distracted. Sometimes important things or opportunities pop up out of nowhere and deciding what to focus on is challenging beyond belief.

I used to hope and pray for balance, but somewhere along the lines, I realized this word doesn’t exist in dictionary of business ownership. Not for me, at least. Somehow, I make it work. I think it started working when I stopped stressing out over everything on my list getting done each day. And I’ve learned that stopping to connect with the customers that walk through my door is more important than making the deadline (that I gave myself) for that blog post I’ve been working on.

5.) What advice do you have for the budding entrepreneur?

I have been through a lot in business, so I could write a book on this subject. Maybe we will save that for later. To

a budding entrepreneur, I would say “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. This applies so many more aspects in business than you think. I will break it down in three points for you. 1. Having someone copy the work of something you are insanely passionate about and proud of is no fun. It is one thing to be inspired by someone, but being a copy cat is just unfair. So don’t do it. Be original so that when your work is doted upon you can truly be proud of yourself. You can say “I did this”. 2. You wouldn’t want someone to cut corners or hurry up a service for you, so don’t do it in your business. Don’t release a product or service until it is something you would purchase yourself. If you want to stand out, use the best materials and techniques you can find. Don’t settle. Make it so good that you want to shout from the rooftops “I made this”. 3. Give the kind of customer service you would want to have. Think outside the box and go the extra mile. If a customer is in any way upset or frustrated, do what you can to turn it around.

I have been taken advantage of in this way, so I am not saying go out and give away things for free. But a discount code or free shipping on a future order goes a long way.

If you notice a customer is very loyal, go out of your way to thank them for their continued support. No matter how “big” you want to get, don’t forget these are the people that helped shape your brand.

Kaitlyn Kirby doesn’t just run Mini Magazine, an online website and virtual magazine but she is the founder of Tulle Magazine and her personal blog, KATEVIOLET. How does she do it? She’s tell is all her secrets.

Tell us about how Mini Magazine started.

I started Mini Magazine after noticing a void in the market, especially after the closing of parent favorite Cookie Magazine. I sought out to take on the role in the digital space and bring celebrity interviews, modern products, trends and more into a fun-to-read format for busy parents.

What made you change the name from BabyStyle to Mini Magazine?

We evolved. It’s really as simple as that— we no longer were focusing on just babies, but from kids ages 0 to 10.

We felt Mini better represented us as a brand and the topics we cover.

If you could describe the magazine in a few words, what would they be?

Modern, Chic, Whimsical— it’s Vogue for the Juicebox Crowd.

As an Editor -- what’s your favorite part of the job title?

I wear many hats at Mini. I’m the art director, the graphic designer, the editor, the writer, the web producer, along with a few hundred other titles. I truly enjoy every aspect of running the magazine, but love giving readers a glimpse into the lives of their favorite celebrity parents, sharing parenting tips and tricks that get them through the day. I do have to say it’s also always thrilling every issue to watch the magazine begin as a series of blank pages and transform

into the content-rich publication that meets you on the web.

What has been your favorite part about putting together each issue?

I love all of the behind-the-scenes bits and bobs that go into each issue. I love compiling a list of our seasonal favorites, from new baby gear to interviews with popular celebrity parents, and turning that into a magazine of over 100 pages.

I think taking all of our months of hard work in preparation, pages of notes and scribbles, and beginning with a blank page is always my favorite. I get so nervous in the beginning of every issue— I’m always worried how the current issue will stack up to the rest— but it’s so exciting to put everything together and deliver it to our readers.

If you could have anyone on the cover -- who would it be and why?

Kate Middleton! I’m obsessed with her style and would love to chat about her mommy must-haves, parenting, and chic ensembles over a cup of tea. I’d also love to interview First Lady Michelle Obama, but one issue at a time.

As an expert at running your own biz, how do you stay organized?

It is CrazyTown 24-7, but I’ve found setting reminders on my iPad and iPhone really help me stay on track. Every night before I go to bed, I map out my entire day from sending certain emails to scheduling content on our websites. It might sound funny, but I even have to schedule

lunch or it will not happen. I’ve been known to work from 7 AM to 1 AM if left to my own devices and lately the reminders have pushed me to stop, take a break, and try to uphold “business hours.” Before I started this new system, I would have post-its literally stuck everywhere in my office and it was overwhelming. Now, when I think of something new I need to do, I simply add it to my schedule and when I finish it, I can check it off. You don’t know how amazing it is to wake up and see a full schedule, then watch tasks disappear from the list as you complete them.

allowing myself more “me time,” and by that I mean three hours of no work at the end of the day, I’m finding I’m not so exhausted.

I’ve found it helps me sleep better at night too as I can see exactly what I accomplished. Otherwise, my mind races and I end up thinking “What exactly did you do today?”

You don’t just run Mini Magazine you are also the founder of Tulle Magazine and your blog, KATEVIOLET. How do you manage to run 3 sites on a daily basis?

With lots of scheduling, that’s how! Thank goodness for scheduled posts. I’ve been running Mini for 3 years now

Where do you f i nd your inspiration for such amazing content?

Everywhere! I always say, “read everything and write often.” I’m constantly looking for new ways to deliver content or ideas for stories that our readers would love. I find inspiration on Twitter, Pinterest, in fashion magazines, on TV. I also look back at what has worked for us in the past, what our readers really connected with, and use those ideas with some sort of fresh, new spin.

If you have time to even read blogs -- what are your favorites?

I love blogs! You can find a longer list of my favorites on my personal blog, KATEVIOLET. But to name a few— Our Happiness Tour, The Ivory Lane, Mrs. Lilien, Glitter Guide, Style by Emily Henderson.

You’ve featured tons of products, shoots, interviews -- what’s been a favorite feature?

I have loved all of them, but I am so crazy about the illustrated editorial shoot by Gretchen Easton from our recent holiday issue with Tia Mowry-Hardridct. It looked like a J.Crew catalog and every scene was so sweet and creative!

What is your day to day life like -- do you ever sleep? :) How do you find time in your schedule to work and have a life? Where is your balance?

I have no life, it’s official. I get up around 6:30 and it takes vats of coffee to get me going. I start reading emails on my iPad to relax a bit before I sit down at my desk. Then it’s more emails, writing and editing content for our websites, checking in with our team, scheduling shoots for new issues, researching new products, reviewing products— lather, rinse, repeat. My fiance jokes that I think everything is a business and I’m always in “work mode.” And I am— It’s so hard to shut it off since I work with so many people in New York, LA, London, and I’m somewhere in the middle, but I’ve been in the habit of making myself shut the laptop at 6 PM to spend time with my fiance. Since I’ve been

In the beginning, I really had no balance. I would work all day, every day and burn myself out through the weekend.

And that was just with one website! Now that I’ve been doing this for three years, I’m learning that certain things can wait until the next day. It’s hard, but I’m making myself stick to that.

Bag you are currently carrying My go-to is a giant, hobo bag large enough to house a small village, but I’m trying to downsize with the Clare Vivier Foldover Clutch right now.

Must-Have Item always in your bag -- Besides my iPhone, my current favorite is my ONE TRUFFLE Black/Camel pouch that helps organize everything!

Go-to outfit Black leggings, chambray popover, oversized linen scarf, leopard loafers.

Drink at Starbucks I’m typically an Iced, Nonfat Caramel Macchiato lady, but lately I’ve been really into Raspberry White Mochas.

Favorite dinner Penne Alla Vodka from Patsy’s in NYC. I have no words for this pasta and I think about it daily.

Spring Essential Wellies! I adore Hunter wellies and have them in a few colors. I can’t wait to go splash in a few puddles this spring!

and the other two for only a few months— we launched Tulle in November and KATEVIOLET just a few months before. I’m lucky to have a great team working with me and helping manage it all, but content does ultimately go through me. I work on posts for the two magazines every day and schedule them accordingly to free up some time.

I’m really trying to post more on my personal blog, but as you can imagine that doesn’t always happen.

What is next for Mini Magazine?

Our spring issue is out March 17th and we’ll be launching a new summer issue in late June! Stay tuned!

Taylor Sterling is the girl behind the Glitter Guide. As founder and creative director of the glitz and glamour, she recently added Mom to her resume. Slowing stepping back into the swing of things since embracing motherhood, Taylor recently welcomed sweet Elodie into her world - she’s the cutest thing ever and we are seriously jealous over her wardrobe. We were thrilled she had time to catch-up with us!

1. Your go-to uniform.

As of late my uniform is easy and sporty. Typically you will find me in a pair of skinny jeans, a striped shirt and a pair of Nikes.

2. How do you instantly spruce up your home?

Since the baby, it’s so hard to find time to clean the house.

Just taking the time to put things away makes a huge difference. That and a nice smelling candle and flowers are an instant uplift.

3. What’s your go-to beauty secret?

I don’t really have one. I think it really about getting enough sleep, staying hydrated and washing your face every night. I also make sure to wear sunscreen every day.

I wish I did that when I was younger. It’s something I am going to be every strict about with Elodie.

4. Life motto or favorite quote?

“Work hard and be kind.” It’s my life’s motto. It’s so important to be kind to others and not get caught up in this ultra completive industry we’re in. I also work insanely hard all the time and I am kind of a workaholic. Since having Elodie I’ve really had to slow down. While it’s been really good for me it’s also super hard!

5. Advice for starting your own business or following your dream?

Just go for it! Life is too short to wonder and have regrets.

Just be smart about it. Try not to waist too much money or expect it to be successful right away. What I also have learned is, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” That is true for your business too. You will always want more and evolve so it’s important to love the every day work and the little things most of all.

6. Advice to budding entrepreneurs?

Put blinders on. Stop worrying about the competition.

Someone is always going to be bigger and (seemingly) more successful than you. You should check them out every once and a while and see what is out there and get motivated to be the best. However, don’t get caught up in it. It’s not healthy.

7. How to maintain living a healthy lifestyle?

Make time for YOU. That’s important for a heathy mind and body. Value fitness and get outside. Eat clean foods and drink lots of water. Read books and stimulate your mind.

Take vacations.

8. What advice to you have for the new mom?

I would tell new moms (which I still am) to not fret over things too hard. I would really freak out and get stressed about things happening with Elodie and then it would pass and I realized many things will just be in stages and then it’s over. You don’t know that in the very beginning and you think that it’s going to be your life forever and that can be very overwhelming. Also, what was important to me was to make Elodie a part of OUR life not vice-versa. So we would have her meet people, we would still go out on date nights (soon after her birth) and we tried to maintain our lifestyle the best we could. It’s definitely different but we think by doing that we stay more sane and it’s good for her too.

9. How can you look stylish and put together in 5 minutes?

A bright colored lipstick, mascara, black ballet flats, jeans and a loose fitting tee. It’s a simple recipe for a look that is super simple but looks great.

10. How do you balance time-management?

I really don’t. Time management is probably the hardest thing for working moms. Especially moms who are entrepreneurs. You really have two babies (or more). Since your business has to be treated like a baby too it can be rough finding time to dedicate to both (and to yourself and husband). I haven’t worked it out yet. I’m getting by each day and doing what I can and trying not to be too hard on myself. I have a lot of help from my parents which makes ahuge difference.

Any advice you would just like to share?

I think my advice would be to read all this advice and experience and take it in but don’t obsess over any of it. Ever baby is different and you will find your way naturally. If you stress over details you will loose your mind when you can’t make them work. Listen to your baby and follow their schedule and things will come together.

I have finally learned the key to a good well built wardrobe is knowing your style and what pieces work for you. When you have a good idea of your most frequently used colors and pieces, you know what you should invest in and what you shouldn’t be spending the money on.

If I see things out in front of me, I remember to wear them more often! I like to have accessories and shoes in sight so it is easier to put together outfits without digging and dumping:)

I love bold colors and patterns, but I realize my everyday consists of a good pair of jeans, blouses, tees, and booties. I choose patterns and colors I love to wear that can be easily layered with staples and mix matched together.

Boots are the most versatile shoe for me since they are comfortable and can be worn most seasons! I have one too many pairs.

Some might be surprised, you have a day job!

What is your day job?

Yes! I work full time as an interactive designer at an Ad Agency in CT. I design websites, email campaigns, banners, etc. I have been an interactive designer/art director for about 18 years.

How do you manage to be a mom, have a fulltime job and run a successful business?

I’ll admit, it’s a handful, but I find so much creative & personal satisfaction in my business that it motivates me to keep going. I have amazing loyal customers & so much family support. My kids are finally at an age where they play independently and I’ll probably jinx myself for saying this, but they get along so well. They are 5 years apart. My

oldest is very patient and practicing to be a babysitter. My husband cooks dinner A LOT and has done more than his fair share of cleaning, etc. I couldn’t do it without him.

What tips do you have for others Moms managing it all?

I don’t want anyone thinking that I don’t have moments where I completely lose it. It’s not easy! I wasn’t super motivated in college and a few years after that. Maybe I am making up for lost time? I really believe in Sophie & Lili. I won’t give up on it. I try not to take on too much at a time, but it’s hard to say no sometimes. I don’t believe anyone is really managing 100%, but this is what I want to do and I don’t want any regrets.

What made you decide to branch out from your well-known handmade dolls to illustrations?

I was sewing so many dolls myself - over 3000(!) in the 4 years since I started. I was getting burnt out and it was taking up all my free time. I was lucky to find a toy company (North American Bear Co) interested in licensing my designs. Silly me to not just sit back and relax and enjoy my ONE job. I blame instagram! I started to doodle and take pictures and post them. I got a few requests (through IG) and took on a few custom orders. Then I got an email from Joy Cho (Oh Joy!) asking if I would like to be a blog contributor. I jumped at the chance! I draw her “How I’d Wear It” feature. Everything just kind of snowballed from there. I just designed some wall art for Land of Nod & have 4 greeting cards coming out for American Greetings for Target in April. I am thrilled to be drawing again after all these years.

We recently you spotted you on Rachel Zoe’s instagram feed. How was that moment?

AHHH! I love Rachel Zoe. I draw what inspires me - lots of fashion week outfits, style bloggers, etc. I saw a cute photo of Rachel and Skyler and just had to draw it. I found her address and sent it to her as a gift. I never thought she would even see it, let alone post it. It was a fun day! I got

so many great emails, orders & business opportunities from it.

If you could illustrate for anyone who would it be and why?

My dream is to do editorial fashion illustrations for a magazine and also do something for J.Crew stores/catalogue.

A professor at FIT told me that fashion illustration was a dying art - this was back in ‘89. I guess it was at the time, but I wish I didn’t listen. I could have been drawing for so much longer.

What’s up next for Sophie & Lili?

Aside from some new products for North American Bear, I have some exciting things coming to Land of Nod (July), greeting cards that I did for AG for Target (April) and some other top secret things that I can’t yet say. I am really excited for 2014!

1.) Simone has serious style. Who does the shopping?

Bill: We both do. Lots of online shopping and trips to Bel Bambini in West Hollywood.

Scout: We love shopping for Simone. I can’t remember the last time I bought myself clothes.

2.) Do you have any go-to places online?

Bill: We love Gilt, H&M’s new online store, and Target. com.

Scout: I’m addicted to Amazon.com (especially their monthly subscriptions to household products!) - Plus, by purchasing via their Amazon Smile program, a portion of the sales go to charity. We give back to Baby Buggy by simply buying everyday necessities.

3.) Girls are so much fun!! So far, what have you learned about raising a daughter?

Bill: I’ve learned that just when i think there isn’t another way she could make me smile, she does or says something hysterical. She is infinitely entertaining and awesome. All at the same time.

4.) Any words of wisdom for parents of girls?

Bill: Always be ready with a potty, clean clothes, and a plenty of wipes.

5.) You’re in the process of adopting -- that is so exciting!!! Simone must be thrilled. When did you make this big decision?

Bill: We’ve talked about a second baby pretty much since Simone was born. When she started going to school by herself, for a full day, it clicked that we could now (hopefully) juggle a second.

6.) Most don’t know that you two are PR gurus and have your own public relations company, Marque Communications. How do you balance work together and family?

Bill: I’d love to say we’re great at balancing. We’re not.

Because of our smart phones, we’re working all the time.

But we can often incorporate Simone into our work since our clients are in the baby and kid space. So that’s fun.

Scout: We’re a true modern family - We have several jobs to make one great life!

7.) I speak for all when I say, we miss you on TV! What’s up next for the famous Guncles?

Scout: We have a few things in the works. Watch for us on your tv’s - very soon!
