Thornton's GCSE successful grades gave everyone in the school reasons to smile and celebrate.
All the hard work and dedication has paid off and no one was more proud than the parents and teachers of our amazing cohort of GCSE students. 48% of our year 11 achieved grades 9-7 and 95% of our students achieved 4-9 making 2021 one of our most successful years to date.
All of our students studied hard to achieve their results echoing the Cundall Manor value of having confidence in ones own ability. We know that our GCSE leavers will
continue to be self-assured and motivated to take on the challenges of A Levels and further education thanks to their Cundall Manor education.
As a school we are delighted that these GCSE successes will inpsire the younger years to work just as hard with as much resilent to achieve what they also, set out to do.
Our leavers remind us all that Cundall Manor School is not just a friendly and supportive community but a creative environment where each pupil can become adept at problem solving and can create their own ambitious futures.
As part of Form 3 & Form 4's buddy morning puils were asked to partner up and plant colourful flowers into pots to create a beautiful floral display outside the Music Classrooms.
This year we were blessed by good weather for the whole school Triathlon. The event proved to be a brilliant success and a great sporting day was had by all.

Pupils in Pre-Prep welcomed a visit from a friendly farmer who brought along a very old fashioned tractor and two special animals: a pony called Fudge and a very well behaved dog called Wellies.
Regardless of the weather, Pre Prep performed a fantastic Harvest Festival this year. We were grateful for all the parents and grandparents who came to watch. There was such a wonderful atmosphere, even with the heavy rain!
The Friends of Cundall hosted a fantastic Autumn Lunch at the beautiful Swinton Estate. Thank you to everyone who attended, for supporting the event. The lunch was made even more memorable thanks to Henry P who played some beautiful piano pieces, at the drinks reception.

Form 1 enjoyed understanding how the Great Fire of London started. They learned that in 1666 houses were made from wood and straw. They recreated their own model houses to see how easily the fire would have spread.
Volunteers from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service led our senior pupils in a training session in how to perform CPR. After watching a training video they practiced on special manikins. The pupils were highly commended by YAS staff for their fantastic attitude to learning and their pleasant manners.
We marked Remembrance Day by gathering together to remember those who lost their lives, through conflict.
Henry who played The Last Post, used his Great Granddad’s Bugle. Henry’s Great Granddad, who served in World War II was a Sapper Royal Engineer and served in Europe after D Day up until the war ended, in Germany.
Henry said “It was a great honour to be able to have the opportunity to play the Last Post using a bugle that has been passed through many generations, in my family”
Lest We Forget.

The annual elf hunt returned this year. Pupils throughout the school visited the Wild Wood and everyone joined the race to find the 28 hidden elves.
A huge well done to all of Pre-Prep for such a fabulous performance of the Nativity. The wonderful costumes and great singing made the performance very memorable, indeed. The story of the Nativity was told brilliantly making us all feel very proud of your hard work and patience.
A huge well done to all the pupils who to took part in our Cancer Research Race for Life. Pupils showed resilience, enthusiasm, and a never give in attitude while completing multiple laps of the field. This fantastic show of fitness raised over £3,500!
This year’s Thornton GCSE Art and Textiles groups headed to London for a whirlwind visit of the capital’s galleries and sights. Arriving early on Friday morning they headed off to the museums of South Kensington in search of inspiration for the pupils’ Set Tasks. The Natural History museum and V&A are treasure troves for the students who split into groups to make the most of the time to sketch and take photographs. After lunch, they moved to the National Gallery which houses the most representative sampling of European painting in the world and an experience that reaffirms the importance of seeing works of art, “in the flesh”.
After an early supper they went to see the Cirque de Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall and witnessed a breath taking show of extraordinary human feats - a visual spectacular that everyone will remember for a long time.
On Saturday after a hearty breakfast, everyone walked to the John Soane museum which is an extraordinary place. The sixteenth century architect amassed an amazing collection of art and artefacts from around the world, which he displayed in his house in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. The group then headed over to the Tate Modern to see some more contemporary works housed in the incredible old power station which, is a work of art in itself.
It was a busy visit with much to see, being a reminder of what amazing places and experiences, London holds.
During Swale's annual trip to Bradford they visited a Mosque, a Hindi Temple (Mandir) and a Sikh Temple (Gurdwara). This trip is important in developing an understanding and tolerance of different beliefs. The pupils were presented with a picture of moderation and tolerance by each of the Faith Tutors. Whilst visiting the Mandir, the pupils were able to observe the ceremony of Arti. Thanks to Seema Buttoo (Bradford Hindu contact) for arranging the trip and to Mme Cooke, Mme Hunzinger and Mr Conyngham for helping to ensure the day ran smoothly.
Pre Prep travelled into the past for "Back in Time" Day. Pupils came to school dressed in a wonderful variety of historical costumes and spent the day learning about different key figures from times gone by. Through a series of workshops they discovered many interesting facts about Christopher Columbus, Henry VIII, Grace Darling, Florence Nightingale, Rosa Parks and David Attenborough.
Form 3 visited the Science and Media Museum in Bradford, learning about climate change and watched a 3d film about Antarctica.
Pupils in Form 4 had a wonderful time visiting the Yorkshire Air Museum. It was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to visualize and experience what they had been learning in their History lessons.
Form 1 and Form 5 had a fantastic trip to Eureka Science Museum. They learned all about the human body, explored digital art and had lots of fun role playing in a shop, a bank, a garage and a post office.
Form 1 watched a show from a ‘Grossologist’ who specialised in gross things! They learned about how blood moves and how our bodies make scabs and they learned all about the digestive system.
Form 5 enjoyed a Science show called “Chew to the Poo!” They learned about the process of digestion by following the amazing journey of a banana and peanut butter sandwich from the moment it is chewed to the last moment when it is pooed! A brilliant day out!
Pre Prep arrived wearing a fantastic array of costumes during this year's World Book Day, The staff were very impressed by the amount of time and effort parents and pupils had taken to create such fabulous outfits, making the day a memorable success!
World Book Day inspired pupils in the Prep and Senior schools to visit Pre Prep to read to the younger children, excerpts from some of their favourite books.
Pupils in Forms 3 and 4 visited the White Rose Books & Coffee Bar to celebrate World Book Day.
Form 4 had a visit from BBC Radio York. Live on the radio, pupils got the opportunity to say what they had dressed up as and what their favourite book was.
Congratulations to all the pupils who competed in our annual Chocolate Cake Race. Pupils had to complete 2 laps of the field and luckily for our competitors, the weather was kind so the race was more of a chocolate than a muddy affair.
Pre Prep's Chocolate Cake Race was slightly shorter at 1 ½ Laps of the field. Well done Pre-Prep! A big well done to Tudors who claimed the eponymous prize.
Our school community has been shocked and saddened by the dreadful situation that has unfolded in Ukraine. We believe it is important that our community offer their support and enable our pupils to help those who have found themselves in the middle of a dreadful situation.
A gazebo was set up in the car park near the Wild Wood as a drop off point for donated items. Pupils had the opportunity to help sort and load items, whichh allowed them to feel a sense of ownership over the project and to help them feel more connected with those in Ukraine. This was a real opportunity for pupils to gain a better understanding of what is important in life; taking positive action instead of feeling helpless in the face of world events, the value of democracy and being an active participant in local and global communities.
Mrs Quarmby would like say a huge thank you for the enormous amount of donations made for the Ukrainian Crisis Appeal. We were inundated and overwhelmed with the generosity of our wonderful community of pupils, parents and staff and our students have been fantastic in helping to sort, pack and organise donations.
The donations were taken to a Thirsk drop off point before leaving for the Polish/Ukraine boarder.
We believe this will be an experience that our pupils will remember for many years to come. Their contributions will have made a positive impact on many people whom they will never meet.
Form 2 visited the Zoo at Flamingo Land and had a super day learning about lots of different animals. They learned how to help protect animals and they especially enjoyed playing at being African rangers; and identifying animals from different clues.
Form 2 learnt all about Space in their Science lessons this term. One Thursday afternoon they launched water rockets across the school field. It was a good job we all got out of the way of the water and Form 2 pupils wore their wellies!
Form 5 had fantastic 2 days in Edinburgh, visiting a variety of tourist attractions. On the first day, pupils visited Edinburgh Castle and the Zoo. The next day pupils had a delicious full English breakfast and then visited Holyrood Palace before their return to school. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone!
The GCSE Drama group has had an exciting and fulfilling two years. The students began, in Eldmire, by creating and performing their own devised piece and a year later the practical element of the course culminated with a scripted performance examination. On Wednesday 16th March 2022 Thornton GCSE Drama students performed a dress rehearsal of their practical examination to an audience of parents and teachers. The first group performed an extract of 'Ten Tiny Fingers & Nine Tiny Toes' by Sue Townsend and the second group performed an extract from 'The Dumb Waiter' by Harold Pinter. Both performances went down extremely well with the audience and gave the students confidence for their final performances that took place the next morning. The students completed the course on Thursday 19th May 2022 when they sat their written paper. The students worked incredibly hard over the last two years and this was reflected in their examination results. Good luck and best wishes for the future!
This year we saw the welcome return to normality for D of E with Thornton setting out for their qualifying Silver expedition. All three groups left Kettlewell under the glorious blue skies of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. After making their way past landmarks such as Coniston Pie and Kilnsey Crag the groups arrived at the fictional village of Darowby (or Grassington when James Herriot is not being filmed). After lunch all of the groups headed to the picturesque village of Burnsall with its neatly mowed car park, by the river Wharfe. After following the river (and one group taking a wrong turn and walking in a loop) the groups finally made it to Appletreewick and the first camp of the weekend.
Day 2 started off a lot cooler than Day 1 due to the overnight rain. The nearby hills were wearing the low lying cloud like a hat, but the groups set off in high spirits and started making their way to the second camp of the weekend in Malham. The day involved quite a lot featureless walking over moorland, until all three groups made it to Malham Cove, home to the limestone pavement (formed by melt water and erosion from the last ice age). Once on top of the cove the groups were met by a lift in the weather which allowed them an amazing view down the valley which would make up the next day’s walking and to the campsite endpoint of day 2.
After a good night’s rest and after some attention had been paid to some feet, due to blisters, the groups set out for a flatter day walking across parkland and manicured farmland to reach the finish at Horton, on the Border with Lancashire. All three groups made their way at a brilliant pace, obviously spurred on by the thought of a comfy bed and home cooked food which would meet them at the end of their Silver expedition. Well Done Thornton!
Form 3 & 4 visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in the summer term. They learned about the diets and habits of the animals they saw as well as using the world map to discover where the animals are found, in the wild. We think there may be some budding zoo keepers in Forms 3 and 4!
Form 2 enjoyed an exciting trip to Whitby, this summer. The children explored Whitby Abbey and discovered a pirate grave which was complete with skull and crossbones. They enjoyed counting each of the 199 steps down to the town where they bought some delicious fish and chips. The children had great fun playing on the beach and paddling in the sea. The day was topped off with an ice- cream!
On Thursday 28th April the cast of ‘We Will Rock You’ performed to a packed audience of parents, relatives, friends, and teachers. Over 100 people came to watch the evening performance and it was definitely a night to remember! The cast, band and crew created a production that was full of life, excitement, and oozed professionalism. Miss Vile and Mrs Reece were incredibly proud of everyone involved and they would like to say thank you, for everyone's support.
The Eldmire GCSE art and textiles trip this year took place this summer. The students - accompanied by Mrs Pearson and Mr Vale - enjoyed some warm weather in the beautiful town of St Ives, Cornwall.
They arrived late in the afternoon after a long journey and immediately headed off to explore the town and beaches. The sun was still shining so they whetted their appetites for what was going to be a busy few days.
On the first day after a good night’s sleep they were guided around town on a sketching tour by artist Greg Humphries. They visited Barbara Hepworth’s house, a beautiful oasis in the middle of town filled with amazing sculptures created by one of the twentieth century’s most important artists. Here the students were introduced to the theme ‘simplification to abstraction’ which was to inspire their work for the rest of the day.
The next day an early start saw them being the first arrivals at St Michael’s Mount, arriving along the causeway through the mist and drizzle was amazing. The island is steeped in history and incredibly magical, it is no wonder so many artists from JMW Turner to Ken Howard have painted it. Later on, the Tremenheere sculpture park, set in beautiful gardens overlooking the Mount demonstrated how art can work in symbiosis with the landscape. A relatively new destination, it has a great collection of works from the like of David Nash, Richard Long and Peter Randall-Page amongst others set in a beautiful wooded valley. After lunch it was back to St Ives for the final activity of the day - surfing - and the students made the most of the waves at the stunning Porthmeor beach.
Day three was spent at the Bernard Leach Potteries having a tour of the pottery studio and taking part in a ceramics workshop where the pupils created tea bowls. In the afternoon they visited the wonderful Tate gallery which houses a wonderful collection of artworks created by artists who have a connection to St Ives. The students who had been studying the work of the St Ives artists in school got to have the opportunity of seeing the work in context, as well as experiencing the wonderful light and scenery of Cornwall, which brought everything to life. All in all, a fantastic trip!
A race like no other... The uniquely Cundall Go-Kart Race returned with participants showcasing some wonderful designs. Well done to everyone involved.
The results:
1st - Andrew S
2nd - Henry P
3rd - Hedley B, William P
This year saw the return of our GCSE Art exhibition. It is a wonderful celebration reflecting all of the hard work our dedicated students have put in across the years. We had a wide variety of pieces, each one unique and telling the artist’s own story.
Well done Thornton!
Bangers & Thrash played at a sold out event Voltfest at Coronation Hall in Boroughbridge on 21st Nov 2021 and 21st May 2022. In November they helped raise £1758.04 for Cancer Research UK and in May they helped raise £1380 split equally between Cancer Research UK and Jenny Ruth Workshops.
Once their exams had been completed, Leckby pupils took the long journey to the Glencoe Outdoor Centre. Whilst in Glencoe pupils had the opportunity to go mountain biking and rafting on Loch Leven.
Congratulations to all of Leckby as while in Glencoe they even managed to climb Ben Nevis; a superb achievement!
What a sports day! A superb effort by all our athletes culminating with Tudors claiming the top prize. A huge thank you to everyone who came to cheer on our superstars. It was lovely to see our field filled with parents and grandparents, again!
Form 1 enjoyed hosting their parents at their make shift Continental Café. They served hot and cold drinks and a variety of fruit and pastries; all with a smile, of course! Well done Form 1.
This year saw the return of our fantastic Grandparents’ Lunch. We welcomed over 100 guests to dine in our school pavilion. It was a lovely event which tied nicely into Sports Day.
Our year 11 Leavers had a wonderful evening at Rockcliffe Hall celebrating the end of an era. The Leavers Dinner is always a poignant date in the School Calendar and it was with great sadness - yet with hope for their futures - that we bade all of our Year 11 pupils farewell and wished them good luck, in their next steps!
We love to keep in touch with all our alumni so please do share any news, no matter how small, with us.
Form 2 welcomed their parents to the school pavilion for a fabulous lunch during the summer term. The pupils lovingly prepared the food and hosted the event themselves, which was a huge success.
Form 6 performed a Play in a Week this term which reflected their creativity and superb team work.Their rendition of Jungle Book brought the pupils together with music, lyrics, make up and movement.
Thank you to Miss Anderson for helping create such a great Play in a Week!
Pre-Prep had a glorious Speech Day and Prize Giving ceremony towards the end of term. They also said farewell to Form 2 as they prepared for their Prep School Journey! Speech Day was then followed by a series of amazing performances in the Pre-Prep Summer Concert.
Well done to all involved for making it such a special day. You are amazing!
Our Games department hosted a whole school cricket festival in memory of the amazing, Mr Dan Woods who is still deeply missed by our whole school community.
#BeAmazing
It was a truly beautiful evening for the return of The Cundall Manor Summer Ball! We welcomed over 150 parents to celebrate what had been a fantastic year. It was a lovely day for our annual outing to Beadnell Sands. Thank you to everyone who made it such a wonderful occasion for our pupils. We even got a mention on Radio 2!
Speech Day is always an exiting day with which to end the academic year. This year’s Speech Day proved to be another wonderful celebration of all things Cundall. Some extremely powerful, funny and emotional speeches accompanied the well-deserved prize giving event.
We would also like to say a massive thank you to our guest speaker Mr Peter Wright who gave the school a fantastic insight of his career in the veterinary and film industry.
