Dear
From Our PRESIDENT
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS,
the Board of Trust and Faculty/Staff that my top three priorities here at CU are People, Performance, and Planning. While people and performance are always critically important, careful planning is a close third in its relative import to the institution. Accordingly, the University has developed several essential planning documents. At the top of that list is the University Strategic Plan, which provides guid ance and direction for all other subordinate plans.
The Board of Trust approved our current Strategic Plan at its regularly scheduled meeting in June 2019, and in keeping with our tradition of updating and refreshing this plan approximately every four years, we assembled a comprehensive team. This team consisted of representatives from the University Board of Trust, administration, faculty, staff, alums, students, and the local community. The team met regularly throughout the fall and spring semes ters and began its work with a review of the most fundamental tenets of our Strategic Plan – i.e. the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of the University. This core team, which was ably facilitated by Trustee Dr. G. Edward Powell then collectively conducted several traditional exercises – including market condition analysis, SWOT analysis, ERIC analysis, and peer comparisons… to define a set of directional priorities and associated goals for the next 5-10 years.
NEW HEIGHTS
Cumberland University’s growth and influence in the broader Middle Tennessee region have reached remarkable heights, surpassing last spring’s enrollment figures by an impressive margin. The latest spring enrollment figures, a count of 2,858 students, stand as a testament to Cumberland’s ability to foster meaningful connections while prioritizing individual academic success.
With multiple years of enrollment growth spearheaded by Vice President of Enrollment Services, Reggie Blair, Cumberland remains steadfast in upholding institutional integrity and core principles amidst the evolving educational landscape. This sustained expansion underscores the dedication of Cumberland’s leadership, exemplified by University President, Dr. Paul C. Stumb, as the university continues to grow in public awareness, introducing prospective students to the rich history and culture that the university proudly embodies.
Cumberland University demonstrates unwavering dedication to retaining students and fostering pathways for future professional success. Despite economic pressures prompting other institutions to reassess fees and adjust tuition prices accordingly, Cumberland remains committed to providing accessible, quality education. Cumberland remains resolute in its pursuit of academic excellence and student engagement, acknowledging the pivotal role of community involvement in nurturing a vibrant educational environment. The close-knit community at Cumberland distinguishes it from other institutions, encouraging students to actively participate in campus life and contribute positively to the experiences of future generations.
As the campus readies itself for another fall semester, defined by a blend of new and familiar faces, Cumberland continues to serve as a beacon of inspiration for higher education institutions, exemplifying what it means to thrive amidst the ongoing transformations in education.
CUMBERLAND’S GLOBAL FOOTPRINT:
Nurturing Talent, Inspiring Change

Under current leadership, the University has seen unprecedented growth across all academic offerings, fueled by a strategic focus on international programs and partnerships.
“At Cumberland University, we’re dedicated to providing a transformative educational experience that transcends borders,” affirms President Paul Stumb. “Our commitment to excellence has attracted students from across the globe, fostering a diverse and dynamic learning environment.”
The University has witnessed promising growth in enrollment, with this year marking its largest International cohort ever. The University’s graduate programs have aided this growth, offering a wide range of disciplines tailored to meet the evolving needs of students joining the global workforce. By introducing new graduate programs, including the Master of Science in Information Technology Management (MSITM), Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM), Master of Science in Forensic Psychology (MSFP) and Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS), Cumberland has expanded its academic portfolio, attracting students from various backgrounds and aspirations.
Cumberland University’s international programs and partnerships extend far beyond campus borders. With a focus on affordability and accessibility, these programs have attracted students from nearly every state in the U.S. and 49 countries worldwide. The University’s commitment to providing a practical and comprehensive education has resonated with students seeking quality higher education opportunities.
Reggie Blair, Vice President for Enrollment Services, emphasizes the role of international partnerships in driving enrollment growth. “Cumberland University’s international collaborations have been instrumental in attracting a diverse pool of talented students,” states Blair. “These partnerships have expanded our reach and enabled us to offer unique opportunities to students worldwide.”
In addition to academic expansion, Cumberland University has prioritized enhancing the student experience through streamlined admissions processes and dedicated support services. By strengthening dual enrollment partnerships with local high schools, growing our internal International Admissions office, and focusing on faculty and staff’s commitment to student success, the University continues to foster an environment conducive to both professional and personal growth.
For more than 180 years, Cumberland University has continued to evolve and innovate, reinforcing its unwavering dedication to global connectedness, communication, and critical thinking skills and preparing students to become leaders in their respective fields on a global scale. As it continues to expand its reach and impact, the University remains steadfast in its mission to transform lives through the power of education.
LABRY SCHOOL OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, & BUSINESS EMBRACES LEADERSHIP CHANGE
During the 2024 spring semester, former Nashville Vice Mayor Jim Shulman was named interim Dean of the Labry School of Science, Technology and Business (LSSTB) at Cumberland University.
Shulman, who served as Nashville’s Vice Mayor from 2018 to 2023, and prior to that served as an At-Large Councilmember and the Councilmember from District 25, joined Cumberland’s faculty a year ago as an Assistant Professor of Political Science.
Dr. Shulman stepped into his new role at the conclusion of the spring semester and replaced Dean Chris Fuller, who accepted a new position at the University as a Data Scientist and Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science.
“I am honored and appreciative to be placed by the University in the office of interim Dean and to continue the legacy of excellence set by Dr. Fuller,” said Shulman, who holds both an undergraduate degree and Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Vanderbilt University. “I look forward to fostering a collaborative and innovative learning environment and ensuring the Labry School remains at the forefront of academic achievement.”
Cumberland President, Dr. Paul Stumb, is confident that the transition within the dean’s office will be “seamless, setting the stage for continued success for the Labry School of Science, Technology, and Business.” He added that he believes Shulman is “uniquely” qualified for this new role at the University because of his diversified administrative and leadership experience, his personal academic achievements, and “perhaps most
importantly he has proven during his time on our campus that he genuinely cares about our students and is committed to ensuring that they achieve success in the classroom as well as in life after their time at Cumberland.”
Under Fuller’s leadership, the LSSTB has experienced “remarkable growth and success,” said University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Bill McKee.
McKee noted that the number of full-time faculty positions has tripled, new academic programs have been introduced and the University has achieved what he termed “remarkable” enrollment growth, during Fuller’s tenure as dean.
“Cumberland University extends its gratitude to Dr. Fuller for his transformative leadership and welcomes Dr. Jim Shulman in his new role,” added McKee.
Shulman, an invested member of the Middle Tennessee community for more than 40 years, has held a number of administrative positions in state government including serving as executive director of the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability, deputy commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Health, chief of staff to Tennessee Speaker of the House, and legal counsel for the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration.
While executive director of the state’s Commission on Aging, he is credited for addressing the need to find solutions for seniors in areas including meals, hunger, transportation and efficiencies in home care services.
HONORING RESILIENCE:
THE BELLER FAMILY’S STORY OF SURVIVAL
There are moments in personal and collective history that are too important to forget. Every year on January 27, the international community collectively remembers the tragedy of the Holocaust. This year, on January 24, in an overflowing Baird Chapel, Bishop J. Mark Spalding began Cumberland University’s Eternal Memory & Life Beyond Survival series with this, “I was honored to be invited to the Holocaust Remembrance Day here at Cumberland University. We must keep in memory those lost and those who worked to save many through compassion and courage. Events like this affirm our belief in the precious gift of life.”
As part of this year’s observance, Dr. George Beller told the harrowing story of his family’s escape from Nazioccupied Europe.
Their story unfolded against the backdrop of a world marred by hatred and persecution. The Beller family’s odyssey commenced in a shtetl, a Yiddish term for a town or village, nestled in southeastern Poland where Dr. Beller’s grandparents and ancestors once thrived. In 1915, seeking a better life, Dr. Beller’s grandfather, Simon Beller, uprooted his family,
including a four-year-old son, and left for Vienna before Nazis entered Grodzisko in 1939.
Dr. Beller’s immediate family arrived in Vienna eager to assimilate to the prevailing culture. Despite their integration into Viennese society, the growing anti-Semitism became an inescapable reality.
The Anschluss (Germany annexing Austria) in 1938 marked a turning point driving Dr. Beller’s family to take flight once again. Escaping from Vienna in 1938 was a frightful endeavor, but with the help of a business contact, Dr. Beller’s father secured Yugoslavian transit visas. However, the Nazis intercepted their train at the Austrian-Italian border. Miraculously allowed to cross, the family continued the pilgrimage across Europe, reaching safety in Antwerp, Belgium, where many members of the Beller family found refuge.
Dr. Beller’s grandmother, Rosa, embarked on her own odyssey. Unable to accompany her family, Rosa endured imprisonment in England, survived the evacuation from Dunkirk, and ultimately rejoined her family in New York in 1945. Dr. Beller’s father, grandfather, and uncle ultimately
escaped from internment camps in France with the help of a network of Catholics defying Nazi orders. Their perilous journey involved crossing the Pyrenees Mountains, evading Nazi capture before finding sanctuary in Spain and Portugal, then ultimately being reunited with family in New York as well.
The Beller family now exists as a beacon, an exemplar of what can emerge from the shadows of war and loss because, as Dr. George Beller succinctly put it, “This story is just one among thousands that have been told by survivors of the Holocaust.”
Dr. Michael J. Spalding, long-time CU Trustee, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of continuing to host the annual Holocaust Remembrance event stating, “It is vital that we continue to host this particular event to ensure that future generations know the struggles and sufferings of the Jewish people. Bringing various speakers to campus helps convey unique experiences and the power of a positive outlook no matter your circumstance. I hope we will continue to educate future generations with this memorable event for many years to come at Cumberland University.”
CONNECTION WITH LEBANON SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
A philanthropic spirit is what makes Cumberland University so much more than a collection of buildings and classrooms. That spirit extends beyond the financial dimension in a myriad of ways, but not many are quite as fun as hosting Lebanon Special School District elementary students at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena to support our men’s basketball team. As over 700 students from Castle Heights Elementary, Coles Ferry Elementary, Sam Houston Elementary, and Jones-Brummett Elementary School filled the stands, the atmosphere buzzed with their collective cheers becoming a dynamic force propelling the men’s basketball team to strive valiantly. Collaborations like this not only add a layer of enjoyment to the university experience but also serve as a fulfillment of our commitment to fostering meaningful connections within the Wilson County community. The joy derived from creating and sustaining these bonds continuously yields dividends that enrich both the university and the local community.
Cliff Ellis, a towering figure in college basketball coaching, announced his retirement after a storied career that began at Cumberland University. Ellis, the winningest coach in the NCAA, leaves behind a legacy of success and impact that spanned several decades.
Ellis’s coaching journey started at Cumberland University, where he served as the head basketball coach and athletic director from 1973 to 1975. During his tenure, Ellis guided the then Bulldogs to remarkable heights, boasting an impressive record of 78-12 and clinching two championships in the Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association. Reflecting on
and paved the way for all the successes I have had in my career. I would not be where I am today without Cumberland. It is in my heart and I am forever grateful. Cumberland University will always be a part of my soul.”
Following his tenure at Cumberland, Coach Ellis transitioned to coaching at various Division I institutions, including South Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, and Coastal Carolina. His illustrious career saw him amass an astounding total of 833 wins at the Division I level, with notable Sweet 16 appearances with Clemson and Auburn, cementing his status as one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history.
CHAMPIONING EXCELLENCE
THE RETIREMENT OF COACH CLIFF ELLIS
One of Ellis’s most memorable seasons came at Auburn in the 1998-99 season, where he led the Tigers to an SEC regular-season championship and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Although Auburn fell short in the tournament against Ohio State, the season showcased Ellis’s exceptional leadership and strategic prowess.
Beyond his achievements in basketball, Ellis’s multifaceted talents and passions continue to leave a lasting impression. A musician, author, and even an ostrich farmer, Ellis’s diverse interests underscore his dynamic personality and creativity.
In honor of his exceptional career, Cumberland Athletics was thrilled to hold a special ceremony during the home basketball games on February 1st against Bethel University.
Ellis joined the Cumberland Sports Network at halftime of the women’s game for a special interview and appeared at a ceremony paying tribute to his legacy at halftime of the men’s game. The stands were filled with fans, alums, faculty, staff, students, and community members, all joining this momentous occasion to celebrate a coaching legend.
As Ellis embarks on the next chapter of his life, his impact on the basketball community and beyond will be remembered for years to come.
From humble beginnings, Coach Ellis’s journey epitomizes dedication, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His legacy has left an indelible mark on future generations of Cumberland players and coaches.
Cumberland University held its highly-anticipated 8th Annual Notes for Nurses fundraiser on February 10 in Alumni Hall after a five-year hiatus where they raised over $115,000 to ease the financial burden of a college education.
Since the inaugural event in 2013, Notes for Nurses quickly became the most popular and successful fundraising event for the Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions hosting more than 2,300 guests and raising over $488,000 in its first seven years. Proceeds from the community event support scholarships for Cumberland Nursing students as well as provide increased funds for simulation equipment in the classroom setting.
As many learned during the pandemic, the need for highly qualified and compassionate nursing professionals has never been greater. The support garnered through Notes for Nurses allows Cumberland to continue preparing students to become the change makers and healthcare professionals of tomorrow.
“As a nurse, every patient you treat is someone’s favorite person. Someone’s loved one. Someone’s everything,” said Dean of the Rudy School, Dr. Mary Bess Griffith. “Nurses are called to a service so much greater than themselves,
and we are so honored to celebrate both current nurses and future nurses during our event.”
In addition to the VIP reception, dinner, dancing, and live entertainment from CU Trustee, Dr. Wright Pinson’s band, Soul Incision (a talented group of musical medical professionals), guests in attendance this year heard from multiple inspirational healthcare professionals like TriStar Summit Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer and CU Trustee, Heather Stafford and Dr. Tiffany Street, Director of Advanced Practice for Vanderbilt Health and Vascular Institute.
To date, Cumberland University has graduated more than 1,600 nurses that
are employed in more than 20 hospitals and health agencies across Middle Tennessee. Cumberland is committed now more than ever to providing aid in combating a climate of nursing shortages with a reaffirmed and reinforced staple of nursing education- a strong foundation of nursing fundamentals.
Cumberland’s mission to inspire all students to lead impactful lives in their communities is evident as future leaders prepare for life beyond the classroom. Students across all academic programs not only apply their knowledge and compassion in the classroom but in their chosen fields after graduation.
“ Our nurses are crucial to the fabric and health of our Wilson County community and beyond,” shared Griffith. “We are humbled by the strong support of our Cumberland Family and simply can’t say Thank You enough. Your support not only gives our students incredible advantages, but it also gives our community empathetic healers. ”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Karlie’s Kismet Journey:
WILD COLORS DESIGN STUDIO
PAINTS A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE OF THE LEBANON COMMUNITY
Karlie Cunha’s professional journey began in the most unexpected of ways. While dropping off her niece at preschool, a teacher floated the idea that Karlie, a Cumberland University alumna turned instructor, should work at the institution. That simple question from Ms. Wanda, the preschool educator, was pivotal in the events that would ultimately become Wild Colors Design Studio. While being a teacher had always been a lingering idea, Karlie finally took the opportunity to teach at what was once her preschool years earlier. Her time spent with those children shaped and sharpened her growing desire to find a way to combine a passion for caring for children with the opportunity to complete her dream of building an art studio. Wild Colors Design Studio emerged amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which left a significant generational mark in the form of anxiety. Enter Wild Colors Design Studio, where the colors on canvases aren’t simply pigments; each brush stroke is a
thread, weaving a tapestry of community. Karlie’s studio has become a space where anxiety gives way to artistic expression, where the freeing presence of creativity and companionship replaced the uncertainty of the outside world. Karlie has always known art’s therapeutic properties and recognized its potential to alleviate the anxieties that permeated the post-pandemic world. She orchestrated the studio’s balanced approach and teaching technique without sacrificing the creative process, which proved to be a balm for anxious hearts. Once confined to limited interactions, kids found an outlet for self-expression, creating a sense of normalcy and routine.
Karlie’s dedication to fostering personal growth and building confidence through art became a beacon attracting families, children, and parents alike, creating a community all unto itself. Wild Colors is more than just a studio. Once
isolated by lockdowns and social distancing, families found solace within Wild Colors’ walls. The studio became a hub for shared experiences and is a space that reflects both student and instructor in the most authentic of ways. Cubbies from Karlie’s teaching days now stand tall as shelves; her desk is generations old, crafted by her grandfather, and works of future community members and leaders fill desks and counter space.
The circle completes as she imparts artistic techniques and the invaluable gift of encouragement and inspiration. Ms. Wanda, who once saw potential in Karlie, is now echoed in Karlie’s role as a guiding light for a new generation of budding artists.
In February, Wild Colors Design Studio held its inaugural Winter Gala. Student artwork hung all around the room, showcasing the growth and creativity of the juvenile Rembrandts. The Gala also featured pieces from Karlie’s Cumberland students and artwork made by participants of the Empower Me Center.
That night, as Karlie stood surrounded by vibrant canvases and the echoing laughter of young students, she found herself becoming a new generation’s pillar. Karlie’s reflection on this revelation is unique, “It would be an undeniable honor to be the Miss Wanda of the art world because when I tell you, she is just light and beautiful. It’s cosmic timing because last week, all of my memories were flooding. It feels like we were just getting our keys and the room was empty and we were filling the space. In four years, we’ve gone from 14 to 60 weekly students. We’ve gone from three summer camps to seven summer camps. And one of those summer camps sold out in a day. I’m so thankful for what God has done in this space and what he is doing in this space, and I have no idea where it’s gonna go, but I feel good in my bones.”
The Winter Gala was a resounding success. Behind the efforts of a dedicated group of parents, $2,000 was raised for scholarships to provide art classes for those who may not have easy access. However, the community’s overwhelming support saw the initial target tripled, resulting in a substantial scholarship fund for free lessons.
Karlie’s dream of creating a space where children can immerse themselves in art is not just a vision but an emerging reality. The studio, with its humble beginnings, has the potential to grow into a haven where creativity knows no bounds. If the beaming faces of families are any indication, their future is bright.
In the Service of Youth:
Judge Shelia Calloway’s Impactful Insights on Juvenile Justice and the Power of Choice
As part of the University’s Vise Library Speaker Series, both the Cumberland and local community had the privilege of hearing from esteemed Davidson County Nashville Juvenile Court Judge, Sheila Calloway, as they celebrated Black History Month together in late February.
“The library’s Speaker Series presents engaging leaders relevant to many of the academic programs on campus,” shared Vise Library Director, Stephen Spann. “This series provides an opportunity for students to learn about their chosen field outside of the traditional classroom setting and provides the community at large with an entry point to campus where they can expand their own knowledge and strengthen their connection to the University.”
Judge Calloway was elected to her seat in 2014 and continues to serve Nashville after her reelection in August of 2022. With decades of practicing law under her belt, Judge Calloway fondly shared many of the parallels between her own upbringing and adolescence and the lives of the young people she encounters daily.
In a given year, roughly 1,000 cases come through her courtroom, and of those, approximately one-third are specifically focused on the misconduct of a child. Judge Calloway shared that most cases actually have more to do with the dysfunction or disputes of the parents and adults caring for the child than the child themselves. This data opened her eyes and inspired her and her team to begin collecting statistics from the course of her career to determine just how many of the children they had previously seen, found themselves in the court system due to their own misconduct. To the dismay of all, approximately 75% of juveniles that fall in the misconduct category had previously been in the system due primarily to cases centered around parental or guardian disputes.
Judge Calloway offered some insight and examples from her own life of the fine line that many of these
children walk. As a young person, school and perhaps more candidly put, rules caused friction between Calloway and her parents. Judge Calloway’s speaking engagement showcased the varying paths she could have walked and her transparency emphasized the importance of our individual choices and the lasting impact that others, whether it be parents, family, leadership, or educators can have on our lives.
As a respected Judge and inspirational professional, Judge Calloway has dedicated her career to creating a system that works to treat the root of Juvenile court issues sharing, “Each day, I am more and more inspired by the children and families we serve in the Juvenile Court. I know that each of them have the potential to do great things. As a court, our role is to provide each youth with the support they need to be successful. I am grateful to be in a position to truly help others succeed in life despite their circumstances.”
Her passion and dedication for the children of Davidson County and the state of Tennessee are undeniably apparent. Judge Calloway’s time on campus left its mark on the day’s audience, with multiple students sharing their own desire to make a difference in their community’s legal system in the future.
The 2023-2024 academic year
marked a significant milestone for Cumberland University as it embarked on a journey to strengthen its alumni community through the establishment of the Student Alumni Ambassador (SAA) program. Made possible by Trustee Dr. G. Edward Powell and spearheaded by Caroline Haynes, Alumni Relations Coordinator, the program aims to cultivate a culture of philanthropy and fortify relationships within the entire Cumberland community.
Building upon years of record-breaking enrollment and a burgeoning pool of current and potential alums, the SAA program set out with ambitious goals. In its inaugural year, participating student leaders wasted no time making a tangible impact. Through their dedication, they not only met but exceeded expectations, setting a high standard for future cohorts.
SAA
cause was further exemplified by the countless hours spent reaching out to over 1,000 individuals, sharing personal narratives that underscored the transformative power of a Cumberland education.
Reflecting on this inaugural year with pride and optimism, Haynes shared, “The enthusiasm and dedication exhibited by our Student Alumni Ambassadors has been truly inspiring. In just one year, they have succeeded in fostering a sense of community and igniting a passion for philanthropy among their peers and countless alumni.”
Throughout the academic year, SAA members were actively engaged in university events. Aside from welcoming visiting guests and alumni while guiding them on campus tours, SAAs also spent time during the Fall Semester visiting each of the Foundations of Scholarsip and Learning (FSL) courses engaging with first time freshmen as they became acclimated to their new home at Cumberland. Their commitment to the
FIRSTFIRSTFIRST YEARYEARYEAR RECAPRECAPRECAP FIRST YEAR RECAP
The impact of the SAA program extends far beyond its quantitative achievements. By bridging the gap between past and present students, the program has forged lasting connections that will continue to strengthen the Cumberland University community for years to come. The SAA program is a testament to the enduring spirit of generosity and camaraderie that defines the Cumberland experience and the heart of the Phoenix.
Looking ahead, the future of the SAA program shines bright with promise. With each passing year, new cohorts of Student Alumni Ambassadors will find their wings, leaving their own mark on the fabric of Cumberland University.
NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINING MONTH CELEBRATED BY ALUMNI, STAFF, PRECEPTORS AND COMMUNITY
March marked the annual celebration of National Athletic Training Month, initially established by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) in 2000, to spread awareness about the evolving profession and highlight a specific group of healthcare professionals across the globe. This year, Cumberland’s Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program is focused on celebrating the importance of education, collaboration and community support in the field.
The Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations along with
Cumberland’s MSAT program hosted the second annual Alumni and Friends Luncheon, sponsored by Hughston Clinic, providing a platform for camaraderie and celebration. Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto’s declaration of March as National Athletic Training Month in Wilson County reaffirmed the significance of athletic trainers within the local community. The luncheon brought together alums, current students, local athletic trainers, preceptors, and Cumberland University staff, fostering a sense of unity for those within the growing profession. Such gatherings serve as an
undeniable reminder of the profound impact and support found among this particular network as well as offer a chance to appreciate preceptors and community supporters, whose unwavering dedication empowers the next generation of athletic trainers to excel.
“As curriculum standards of athletic training education now require different levels of immersive clinical experience, the role of a preceptor has an even more significant impact on students,” reflected MSAT Program Director, Dr. Whitney Graves. “I am constantly reminded of how fortunate
our MSAT students are to have a great variety of preceptors, many of whom are alums of Cumberland’s Athletic Training Program, as well as new and innovative clinical experiences to prepare them as they transition to their professional careers.”
Athletic Trainers treat a range of patients and work in various settings outside of traditional sports. To date, Athletic Trainers have been found in public and private secondary schools, universities, professional, and olympic sports. More non-traditional work settings include the performing arts working with both collegiate and professional level dancers and even musicians.
Cumberland University is one of only five schools in the state that currently offers the newly required Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) degree. In 2016, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) announced the transition from a bachelor’s required field to master’s, with the last bachelor’s class being fall of 2023. Cumberland promptly transitioned their bachelor’s program to the MSAT in Fall 2020.
This year, the Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions, home to the MSAT program, has seen a variety of budding partnerships. Through joint labs and simulations, students from the MSAT program and Cumberland’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program have embraced collaborative thinking and honed their skills in a supportive environment. The two programs ran a full-scale simulation allowing students to apply and reinforce their learning, fostering deeper appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration and collaborative patient care.
Future Athletic Trainers are not only excelling in the classroom at CU. With 31 NAIA sports on campus, Cumberland employs seven Athletic Trainers charged with providing quality patient care for athletes focusing on preventative care as well as rehabilitation. Additionally, Cumberland partners with preceptors in the greater Nashville area, such as Hughston
Clinic, Urban Physical Therapy, Vol State Community College, and Lipscomb University as well as preceptors at local high schools like, Friendship Christian, Lebanon High School, Watertown High School, and Wilson Central High School that are working with current students in the MSAT program in a clinical setting.
National Athletic Training Month is an annual testament to the athletic training community’s resilience, dedication, and collaborative spirit. Cumberland University’s MSAT program is just one example of the many academic offerings at the graduate level committed to excellence and professional growth.
“You don’t have to go all the way to NYC to see amazing theater,”
according to Cumberland University Assistant Professor of Theater and Director, Jenny Ballard.
In late March, students, faculty, staff, and the local community flocked to Cumberland’s June and Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center to support the University’s Theater Department as they performed “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a show that delivered on its promise to be a riotous ride filled with comedic genius.
“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” has received prestigious awards, including the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book. Set in a small town, the musical follows the journey of six quirky and talented young spellers as they compete for the coveted title of Spelling Champion. Amidst the laughter and excitement, the audience was treated to candid and touching stories from the spellers’ lives, creating a truly immersive experience.
The highly anticipated show featured a profoundly talented cast of CU students directed by Ballard and under the musical direction of Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choirs, Sandy Elliott, including, Christina Shandor, Andrew Ingram, Ally Barnett, JD Moore, Alex Sain, Takiah Ledo, Kai’a
Chaffin, Tristan Olsen, Mae Jenkins, Karsen Jefferson, Kayla Whyte, Carter Medley and Evin Ross. The show was choreographed by Debra Perry and Issac Osipchuk.
The June and Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center debuted a variety of new upgrades on the show’s opening night thanks to the generosity of Mr. William Heydel, including brand-new LED lighting, a new sound system, with state-of-the-art soundboard and body microphones. These enhancements not only benefit Cumberland’s Theater Department but organizations like the Cumberland University Arts Council (CUCAC) as well.
The Arts Council cultivates appreciation and support of the arts for the entertainment and enrichment of
the community through accessibility, education, and partnership. This particular organization is responsible for bringing the Nashville Symphony to campus for the summer’s annual Symphony on the Lawn event, helps host Camp Fame, a weeklong arts camp for children, on Cumberland’s campus each year, and coordinates the Chalk Art Fest each October.
“Living in Wilson County, I am delighted that we have a university in the heart of our community willing to foster both volunteerism and a connection to the arts. CUCAC has impacted both youth and adults by making theater, fine arts, the symphony and a number of other programs accessible to all,” said CUCAC board member, Susan Shaw. “I’m proud to be a supporter of the arts and Cumberland University!”
Alumni Reunion:
HONORING THE 2014 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL TEAM
Cumberland University hosted a 10-year reunion honoring the 2014 NAIA National Championship Baseball team at Woody Hunt Stadium on Saturday, April 6, 2024 with the generous support of community sponsors Whitt’s Barbecue and Hot Yoga Lebanon.
The Office of Advancement and Alumni partnered with CU Athletics to celebrate the 2014 team who claimed the program’s third title with a season finish of 49-20.
“The 2014 CU Baseball Team that won the NAIA National Championship is by far one of the best stories in CU athletics history,” said Vice President of Athletics, Ron Pavan. “Their coming together as a team and their will to win was simply unmatched and having them back on campus was truly an honor.”
While back on campus, the team and their families enjoyed a special reception at the Catron Alumni house on Friday night with Coach Woody Hunt and University President, Dr. Paul Stumb before being recognized during a double header against Freed-Hardeman.
“The opportunity to bring teams like this back to campus is truly special,” said Alumni Relations Coordinator, Caroline Haynes. “Hearing their stories and the impact of their time at CU all these years later is just one of the many reasons I love these reunions. Over the past ten years enrollment has nearly doubled and the physical landscape of our university has undeniably changed; however, the relationships built
and the community support has clearly stayed constant. That is evident by the excitement of the weekend and the stories shared.”
Former 2014 National Championship team member and CU Alumni Board member, Jake Collier, showed his appreciation sharing, “It was nostalgic to be back on campus at Cumberland, and not only with our team but with the community that lifted us up and supported us all the way to a National Championship. Our conversations were different, centered around kids, marriage, life events, but the thing about winning a national championship is you come to realize what matters most- your invaluable relationships. I know I speak for the team when I say, we truly walked away from our time at Cumberland with friends for life. I’m elated to know we left a positive legacy for the school, ourselves, and the program. What a special weekend, with special people. It means so much that Cumberland welcomed us back with open arms so we could live in the glory days one more time. I’m truly grateful for CU.”
Beyond the statistics and accolades of this inspirational team lies a story of camaraderie, perseverance, and the unbreakable bond forged on the field of dreams. As Coach Woody Hunt always says, “Dreams are somewhat improbable, but always possible.”
Dear Cumberland,
You’ve been an undreamt dream come to life for me.
As only a junior, Cumberland University has provided me with a myriad of opportunities that have spurred my growth as an individual and a professional. Being one of the more unconventional students to walk the halls of this institution, I’ve championed the philosophy that you truly get out of Cumberland what you put into it. I decided to put my heart and soul into it and haven’t been disappointed.
Embracing the path ahead, I decided to run for the esteemed position of Student Body President as a junior – with the confidence and support of the incredible family I’ve built here. This role has allowed me the privilege to expand not just for myself but to serve our community in meaningful ways. We’ve enhanced communication between the student body and administration and implemented significant, tangible changes across campus. Among these, we’ve championed sustainability efforts, including introducing filtered water bottle filling stations in all dormitories—a testament to our commitment to health and environmental responsibility.
On the topic of sustainability, I’m thrilled to share our journey with the Intentionally Green Composting Initiative. Still, in one of its final phases, I’ve poured countless hours into laying the foundation for this project, aiming to launch it by the fall semester. This initiative extends beyond composting; it’s about nurturing a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainable living within our community.
Our achievements in bringing our community together have been manifold – from triumphing in the College Voter Registration Competition hosted by the Tennessee Secretary of State to orchestrating the largest intercultural event on campus. This particular event was a vibrant celebration of our diverse community, ensuring that those who might otherwise feel overlooked are acknowledged and celebrated.
Moreover, SGA has empowered me to leverage the resources and connections I’ve gained to foster inclusivity and engagement beyond student government. This includes creating an inclusive student lounge in the Learning Commons Center as the Art of Life intern and hosting the university’s first successful student debate in decades as the Philomathean Society President.
To me, Student Government is more than an individual role; it’s a collective endeavor. It’s about us all working together to shape the future of Cumberland University. Serving in SGA provided me with a platform to collaborate with administration and board members, allowing me to contribute to shaping our university’s future. Thank you for entrusting me with this voice. Serving as your SGA President has been an indescribable honor.
D Commencement 2024
onald Graham, former publisher of The Washington Post, delivered a poignant address during Cumberland University’s commencement, urging graduates to embrace independent thinking and look beyond political affiliations. Addressing over 700 students, Graham emphasized the importance of scrutinizing. “Be independent in your thinking,” Graham said, noting that he had lived during a period dating back to the presidency of Harry S. Truman and that he’d never seen a president that “was always right” on every issue.
As a Vietnam War veteran and former D.C. police patrolman, Graham’s credibility extends beyond his role as a media figure. His tenure as The Washington Post’s publisher for two decades showcased a commitment to truth and
integrity in journalism, qualities he now imparts to the next generation.
Graham’s philanthropic contributions are notable: co-founding initiatives like the District of Columbia College Access Program and TheDream.US, he has worked to expand educational opportunities for underserved communities, including undocumented students.
Graham’s address didn’t just focus on political awareness; it also instilled a sense of responsibility in the graduates. By reminding them that they are the inheritors of the nation, he empowered them to recognize their potential to effect change. This call to action echoed throughout the commencement weekend, as alumni and faculty recognized students for their community leadership and academic achievements.
The spirit of giving back permeated the ceremonies, symbolized by the university’s coin tradition sponsored by CedarStone Bank and Wilson Bank and Trust. Through this tradition, graduates took their first step toward philanthropy, supporting future students through the Pay It Forward Scholarship.
The weekend also celebrated milestones in nursing and postgraduate education. The Nursing Pinning Ceremony honored 36 nursing students, welcoming them into the profession, while 126 master’s students were hooded, marking the culmination of their academic journeys.
Donald Graham’s words serve as a guide for the Class of 2024, empowering them to navigate the complexities of the world with clarity and purpose.
Take a look at the celebrations during our 2024 Commencement Weekend!

Dr. Mary Bess Griffith: Shaping the Future of Nursing Education HONORING CUMBERLAND’S
Cumberland University bids farewell to the Dean of The Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions, Dr. Mary Bess Griffith, after a remarkable 51-year tenure in healthcare at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 academic year.
During her six years as Dean, Dr. Griffith’s dedication and passion for education profoundly impacted the future of nurses under her leadership. With her departure, Cumberland closes a chapter on a distinguished career adorned with achievements that have shaped the trajectory of the university’s nursing program.
Before joining Cumberland in 2018, Dr. Griffith held the position of Director of the Nursing Department and Associate Professor of Nursing at Bethel University. Her extensive background includes pivotal roles at the Baptist Memorial Healthcare Corporation as Director of Market Services for West Tennessee and East Arkansas, as well as experience as a Nursing Lecturer at Murray State University, Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Tennessee at Martin, and Chair (Dean) of the Department of Nursing and Associate Professor at Dyersburg State Community College.
During her time at Cumberland, Dr. Griffith was the driving force spearheading transformative changes and enhancements to the nursing program, both in terms of infrastructure and academic rigor. Under her leadership, the Rudy School witnessed the addition of the Center for Nursing Education, Simulation, and Training; a lab equipped with 18 new beds, practice mannequins, and additional equipment.
One of the most impressive measures of Dr. Griffith’s impact is reflected in Cumberland’s NCLEX exam pass rate, for which the university had a 100 percent success rate in two of the past three years. The NCLEX, or the National Council Licensure Examination, serves as a crucial benchmark for assessing the readiness of nursing students to enter the workforce. Positioned at the top of the state in NCLEX scoring, The Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing produces skilled and capable nurses poised to make meaningful contributions to the medical field. This achievement among many others highlights the invaluable contributions of leaders like Dr. Griffith.
As Dr. Griffith embarks on this new chapter in her life, the Cumberland community stands forever changed, and the standards she has set within The Rudy School of Nursing will continue to influence the medical field for years to come. Even more, Cumberland University stands forever grateful for the lasting imprint her efforts and relationships have left on many as a true change agent in nursing education.

Dr. Ripski leaves behind a legacy of unwavering service and unique impact. Before joining Cumberland in 2016, he served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Tennessee at Martin, teaching courses in philosophy, religion, and Bible. Dr. Ripski has been a catalyst for spiritual and personal growth for the Cumberland community, inspiring students and staff alike. CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY’S PHOENIX BALL CELEBRATES REMARKABLE LEGACY AND TRADITION
Known as one of Middle Tennessee’s premier black tie galas, Cumberland University’s first Phoenix Ball was hosted in 1984 by former First Lady, Mary Clement and University President, Bob Clement. This year, on June 1, 2024 Cumberland celebrated a remarkable milestone as it held the 40th Annual Phoenix Ball in Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
“I’m so thankful that people are now enjoying this event 40 years later. I can’t believe it’s been 40 years and I love so many that have worked so hard to make this event a long living success,” said Phoenix Ball inaugural host, Mary Clement.
Phoenix Ball was initially formed as the university’s signature event with the hopes of raising Cumberland’s visibility among the local community and the greater Nashville area while raising funds to support deserving students and various campus enhancement projects. In addition to providing a night of celebration, entertainment, and dancing, Phoenix Ball still exists to continue supporting students in need within the Cumberland community.
This year’s Phoenix Ball Chairs, Greg and Heather Landers, looked back on the night fondly saying, “Our hope is that every attendee enjoyed the night but more importantly enjoyed all that was done to honor the past, the present, and the future legacy that Phoenix Ball is creating for CU students.”
Throughout the night, guests had the opportunity to be a change agent for Cumberland students by bidding on items in both a silent auction and live auction as well as participating in the Ball’s newest event, the live paddle raise. This initiative aimed to raise funds solely dedicated to the Phoenix Ball Endowed Scholarship.
“The 2024, 40th Annual Phoenix Ball was only made possible thanks to the support of many generous sponsors and dedicated committee members,” said the Landers. “We will never be able to fully express our gratitude to each and every individual who contributed to the night’s success, but we are truly grateful for the roles that so many played in making the night absolutely unforgettable.”

Inthe face of widespread challenges stemming from delays in national FAFSA processing and escalating inflation, Cumberland University has taken a decisive step: tuition rates for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year will remain unchanged. This bold move reflects the university’s core values of accessibility and transparency, aiming to reassure prospective students amidst uncertain times.
Cumberland University has underscored its unwavering commitment to affordability and inclusivity evident by the fact that over 90% of the student population receives financial aid, a testament to the university’s proactive efforts to increase higher education opportunities. While many peer institutions opt for tuition increases, Cumberland University is charting a different course. By maintaining current tuition levels, the university seeks to alleviate financial anxieties and provide clarity for students and families.
BREAKING THE MOLD:
CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY HOLDS TUITION AMIDST FINANCIAL AID STRIFE
Reggie Blair, Vice President of Enrollment Services, emphasized the institution’s dedication to supporting its community during these challenging circumstances. Blair noted, “Combined with escalating inflation costs, it’s understandable why prospective students and their families may be feeling anxious about college expenses and enrollment this year. While most colleges and universities are planning to raise tuition by the standard 2-10 percent, Cumberland University is taking a different approach, one focused on removing barriers for future students.”
Cumberland University’s announcement serves as a beacon of financial stability and support for those considering higher education. By defying conventional tuition hike trends and emphasizing affordability, the university seeks to instill confidence and bolster enrollment among prospective students navigating the complexities of college selection.
Looking ahead, Cumberland University remains optimistic about welcoming the incoming class of 2024. Prospective students are encouraged to leverage available assistance and support as they weigh their educational options in these critical times. The university stands ready to provide guidance and resources to ensure that every student can access the transformative power of education.
I N M E M O R I A M
Dr. Robert C. Bone “
Dr. Bone will be long remembered for the many contributions he made to our community, to Cumberland University, and to so many other causes and influences, from helping launch a community bank, to founding University Medical Center Hospital, to being a nationally recognized surgeon and prominent physician and teacher.
His gentle, caring, and sincerely compassionate bedside manners touched thousands whom he saw as patients.
Perhaps one of the most unique qualities about this special person was that he never ceased wanting to learn and being informed.
As chairman of the Board of Trust, he was at the forefront of Cumberland University’s revival in 1982 from a struggling junior college back to a four-year university and deserves much of the credit for the success the University has realized regarding its financial stability, academic achievements, increases in enrollment, and in other areas where the school’s performance has excelled.

2024 IMPACT REPORT
Thank you so much for your loyalty and support of Cumberland University. We are excited to present our third annual Impact Report for Fiscal Year 2023-24. It continues to be our priority to provide a detailed report about how your gift makes a unique impact on our students and how you are helping us transform lives through the power of education. And, this is our chance to celebrate you and your support of CU!
Cumberland owes much of its growth in enrollment, gifts, and endowment to each one of you. During this fiscal year, we celebrated the creation of three new endowed professorships, seven new endowed scholarships, we received federal and private grants to help update our nursing labs, we launched the Phoenix Foundation to support athletics, and we established the Phoenix Society to honor the families that included CU in their estate plans.
At Commencement, Cumberland graduated over 700 students hailing from 59 TN counties, 38 states, and 49 countries. Your gifts to the Rise Together Annual Giving Appeal allowed Cumberland to provide funding assistance to our students through academic coaches, library resources, and tutoring programs. Our alumni office continues to grow, raising our alumni giving participation to another level this year and in this year’s graduation coin tradition 99.8% of our CU students gave back their coin to begin the journey of giving back to their Alma Mater.
Please enjoy this report and I hope you will continue to support our vision and community. At the end of this report there are opportunities to continue to invest in CU. Please consider joining the President’s Club, and we in turn will continue to report how your investment is transforming the lives of our Cumberland students.
Sincerely,
Courtney Wheeler Vice President of Advancement

MAJOR GIFTS
Major gifts, defined as $25,000 or more, have a significant impact on the students, faculty and staff at Cumberland University. These generous donations allow CU to fund important initiatives, such as the endowment, research projects, scholarships, professorships, academic programs and capital improvements. Overall, these contributions help ensure the longterm sustainability and success of Cumberland and our students.
Jenny Bennett, Director of Major Gifts
Professorships
University Professorships are awarded to faculty at Cumberland University who have had a significant impact on the University in addition to fulfilling their normal academic responsibilities. The impact may be in the areas of policy development, teaching, curricular change, innovative programs, or academic leadership. The honor recognizes individuals whose actions (whether through their service at the University, in the community, through their professional organizations, or by other means) have improved the quality with which the University advances its mission. Professorships play a crucial role in enhancing universities. They provide a stable academic workforce that can teach, conduct research, and contribute to the university’s intellectual community. This year, three new endowed professorships were established. And, another faculty/staff grant was established to help our professors further their research and other projects.
Estate Gifts
Estate gifts, also known as planned gifts, are an effective way to support charitable causes even after an individual’s lifetime. These gifts can include bequests in a will, charitable trusts, or gifts of life insurance policies. The impact of estate gifts lies in their ability to create a lasting impact and legacy. Additionally, estate gifts can often provide tax benefits for donors and their heirs. Overall, estate gifts can be a powerful tool for individuals who want to make a meaningful difference in the world.
Phoenix Society and Heifner-Martin Lecture Series
Last fall Cumberland invited our most loyal and committed supporters to join our Phoenix Society. We were able to hear from those who have chosen to include CU in their estate plans. Dr. Fred Heifner spoke about the immense personal satisfaction he and his wife receive from giving and take pride knowing its impact will live on in future generations long after his teaching career is over.
This year we look forward to hosting a conversation about things to consider when creating a will, as well as financial planning, via Zoom August 8. Additionally, 2012 MSP Graduate, LaQuita Martin and her husband Dr. Richard Orland recently established the Heifner-Martin Lecture Series from a planned gift and a generous in person gift. The first lecture will take place this fall. Be sure to stay in touch for more information to follow.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Endowed scholarships make a significant impact on a student’s ability to reach their dreams and goals. Unlike a one-time donation, an endowed scholarship is a permanent fund that generates interest annually to support student scholarships. Thanks to the continued generosity and support of our committed donors seven new endowed scholarships were established this year. These scholarships allow us to further our mission of transforming lives through the power of education.

*Based on 2023 calendar year*
“This year, it was amazing to see so many of our Cumberland Family giving back during our campaigns like Battle of the Decades, GivingTuesday, Giving Week, and The Final Stretch. The students you invest in go on to shape our communities and our world. By giving annually, you are directly affecting their success and opportunities while they study with us along with strengthening our fabric of philanthropy. Transforming the lives of our students is heavily supported by the generosity of others and for that, we are incredibly grateful.
In my role, I get to work with a lot of incredible community members, alumni, and our parents and family members, who are heavily involved in their students’ journey by their involvement in our CU Parent & Family Association. This year, as we continue to grow this group, for the first time we are excited to recognize our parent givers. We hope that you enjoy this report and will join us this year once again for Welcome Week beginning Monday, August 19th as we greet our students back on campus. Be on the lookout for more information soon!”
Katie Wolfe, Director of Annual Giving, Cumberland University
