THE MACEBEARER The Marshall carries the Mace, the official symbol of academic authority, the meaning of which has evolved from medieval weaponry. The Mace is a symbol of the power of knowledge and the significance of a liberal arts education. At the base is a milkweed pod, representing the many directions the seeds of education travel. At the top is a globe, representing the world of lifelong learning. Cumberland University’s mace also displays a representation of the University’s special symbol, the Phoenix. The mythical bird boldly rises from the fire of ideas atop the globe. Phoenix medallions are also found on the staff of the Mace. The Mace was designed and crafted by Mr. Klaus Kallenberger, a craftsman living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Made of cherry wood, wrought, and cast sterling silver, red jasper, and red enamel, it was a gift to the University from University Trustee Jeanette Cantrell Rudy, who passed away in 2011. It is the tradition of this University to select a person from the Cumberland community to serve as Macebearer. The Macebearer walks with the Faculty of the University and is the last person to enter the commencement chamber before the President. The tradition traces to the Macebearer’s role in protecting the President, but for Cumberland, the meaning is deeper, as it represents the special historical role played by the community in assuring the continuity of this great University.

DR. ROBERT CARVER BONE, M.D., M.B.A., D. LITT. HONORUS CAUSA Dr. Robert Carver Bone was born in Lebanon, Tennessee. He received his undergraduate, medical degree, and master’s in business administration from Vanderbilt University. He later pursued two residencies in pediatrics and surgery. In the mid 70’s, Dr. Bone spearheaded a group of physicians and business leaders in the community whose tireless efforts, over almost a decade, led to the establishment of the University Medical Center, which is now Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital.

He served his country over 30 years in the U.S. Army Reserve and Tennessee Air National Guard, retiring with the rank of Colonel. Dr. Bone served on the Board of Cumberland University for well over 50 years, as Chairman for 20 years, and was awarded the title Chairman Emeritus.

The achievements and contributions Dr. Bone made at CU and in the community not only practicing medicine but serving as the catalyst behind new ideas, related to healthcare, made our community a better place to live. He passed in 2024, but his impact at Cumberland will live in perpetuity. He is represented today by his wife of over 30 years, Connie Lape Bone and his son, Robert Carver Bone II. 3

FACULTY AWARD OF EXCELLENCE The Faculty Award of Excellence is selected by the Faculty Senate. It is based on academic excellence, personal integrity, university and community engagement, as well as personal demeanor.

HAZEL RAE KONKEL Hazel Konkel is a top performer both on the volleyball court and in the classroom. She is graduating today Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise & Sport Science 3+2. She was captain of the Women’s Volleyball team in the 2024 season. She was Freshman Player of the year – 2022, 1st Team MSC - 2022, 2023, 2024, Cumberland University dean's list - 2022, 2023, 2024, and 4x MSC defender of the week.

Her clinical skills and foundational knowledge are exceptional. Even before officially starting the MSAT program, preceptors were vying for the opportunity to work with her—a testament to her reputation for excellence and reliability. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Gamma Beta Phi Honor Societies. Hazel is from Du Bois, Illinois. Her parents are Autumn and Josh Konkel.

THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD The President’s Award is presented to the graduate who most nearly embodies the ideals, principles, and spirit of the University. The candidates for this award are judged based on their scholastic attainment, personal bearing, integrity, leadership, moral and ethical conduct, and loyalty to the University.

VAIBHAV BISHT Vaibhav Bisht (fondly known as "VB" on campus) is from Lucknow, India. He came to Cumberland to pursue his passion for tennis and academics. Enrolled in the 3+2 program, he is graduating Summa Cum Laude, with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science and will continue his studies to earn a Master’s in Athletic Training next May. VB has excelled both academically and athletically, while being a key member of the Men’s Tennis Team since Spring 2022. His dedication to academic excellence has earned him ITA Scholar-Athlete honors (2022, 2023, 2024) and consistent recognition on the Dean’s List throughout his undergraduate career.

VB has served as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a Resident Assistant, and an inaugural member of the Student Alumni Ambassadors. He has served as an Exercise Science Lab Tutor, Science Lab Tutor, and now holds the role of Head Tutor for the Exercise Science Lab. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. His parents are Mahendra and Geeta Bisht.

ALGERNON SYDNEY SULLIVAN AWARD The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award was established by the New York Southern Society in 1925 in memory of Mr. Sullivan, a Southerner who became a prominent lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist in New York in the late nineteenth century. The Society and carefully selected colleges and universities jointly arrange for the issue of medallions which are to be perpetual reminders of Algernon Sydney Sullivan, the memory of whose life has been handed down with loving and grateful admiration as one that was ever encouraging and inspiring; they justify our highest ideals and hopes. These prestigious awards for excellence of character and service to humanity are being presented by Cumberland University at the 2025 Commencement Exercises to the following recipients:

AUSTIN DRAPER FELTS Austin is receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting today, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Austin has been involved in many areas of the University, including serving in Student Government for three years.

Austin received the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) Calvin & Jean King Foundation Award in August of 2023, and the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountant Student Influencer for Cumberland University. He has completed two accounting internships with Dempsey Vantrease & Follis PLLC, a public accounting firm here in Lebanon. He plans to attend graduate school and get a Master of Accountancy degree and become a CPA. Austin is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa – Leadership Honor Society and the Philomathian Society. He was voted Homecoming King last fall semester and Mr. Cumberland last week by his peers. Austin is from Lebanon, Tennessee, his parents are Sheena and Patrick Presson.

LUCY LEE Lucy Lee graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1994. She became the first Executive Director of Leadership Wilson. After retiring from Leadership Wilson in 2007, she continued providing leadership training and consulting to corporate and non-profit clients.

She was an adjunct professor here at Cumberland University from 2007-2012 teaching Principles of Leadership in the MBA program.

Lucy served as president of the Wilson County UT Alumni Association, and she has been a member of the Lebanon Rotary Club since 1995, where she served as treasurer and as the first woman president. She is also a Paul Harris Fellow.

Lucy has been recognized over the years with the Lebanon Mayor’s Community Spirit Award, and both the Tennessee Outstanding Leadership Educator award and the Founders Award given by the TACL, and the Wilsonian of the Year given by the Mt. Juliet/West Wilson Chamber.

Lucy is a member of Lebanon First United Methodist Church. She is married to Robert (Bob) Evans Lee, a local attorney. They have two grown daughters, Susan Bennett and Rebecca Walker, and five grandchildren Blair, Davis, Will, Annalee, and Eve. 5

PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE The President’s Award for Teaching Excellence is presented each year to a faculty member who has made a significant difference in the lives of our students. Nominations are made by the graduating class.

S. CHRISTOPHER FULLER, PH.D. Dr. Fuller graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Auburn University. He was a University Honors Scholar and was chosen by the faculty of two departments as the top graduate in math and in physics. In 2006, he completed a Master of Applied Mathematics for his work concerning the convergence of the iterative Jacobi method when solving a tri-diagonal system. He received his Ph.D. from Auburn University in May 2010 working with Frank Uhlig. As part of his dissertation, Dr. Fuller solved one of a dozen “Challenges in Matrix Theory” problems published a decade ago. None of the other challenges have yet been solved.

Dr. Fuller joined the CU faculty in 2010. He has taught most of the math classes offered at CU, as well as programming and statistics. After serving as Interim Dean for a year, Dr. Fuller was named Dean of the Labry School of Science, Technology and Business, a role in which he served from 2016 - 2024.

He now serves as Data Scientist and Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. Dr. Fuller and his wife Torri have two sons and live in Lebanon.

ALUMNI AWARDS AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE The Awards of Excellence are presented to Cumberland University graduates who have attained a significant level of achievement in their chosen field. Nominees demonstrate a positive impact on local, state, or national/international level and must be of high integrity and character. These awards are presented in separate categories which represent the three academic schools of Cumberland.

These prestigious awards for excellence by the Cumberland University Alumni Association are presented at the 2025 Commencement Exercises to the following recipients:

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN THE OAKLEY SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES, EDUCATION, AND THE ARTS RANESA SHIPMAN, ED.D. Dr. Ranesa Shipman is a lifelong learner and dynamic educational leader with over a decade of experience in educational leadership, professional development, and learning facilitation. Dr. Shipman holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Logistics from Alabama A&M University, a master’s degree from Cumberland University, an Educational Specialist degree in Supervision and Administration, and a Doctorate in Education from Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Shipman is widely recognized for her innovative ideas and commitment to academic excellence. As an expert in 21st-century learning methodologies, she is driven to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in today’s evolving workforce. In 2024, Dr. Shipman was elected Vice President of the Tennessee Government Professional Institute (TGPI) graduating class. She also holds the esteemed designation of Certified Facilitator for the Talent Management Center of Excellence. Her leadership and service have earned her accolades such as Citizen of the Year and Woman of the Year. She is the founder and CEO of Ivy Leadership Consultants, LLC. Outside of her professional endeavors, she enjoys spending quality time with her husband of 20 years, their two daughters, and their beloved dog, Sir Thor.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN THE LABRY SCHOOL OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND BUSINESS TAYLOR PORCH Taylor Porch is a 2004 graduate of Cumberland University receiving his Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While at Cumberland, Taylor played both Men’s Basketball and Men’s Golf.

Taylor is now the Vice President at Porch Stribling Webb, Inc. in Waverly, TN. Throughout his career in the insurance industry, Taylor has served on multiple Boards and President’s Councils and was awarded the Young Insuror of The Year in 2013 by the Insurors of Tennessee. In 2021 when his hometown was devastated by a flood, he organized a one-day event that raised nearly $300,000 for local flood victims. He and his wife Rebecca live in Waverly, Tennessee and have 2 children, Sawyer (18) and Sydney (15).

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN THE RUDY SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS TASHA WALKER IRBY Tasha Walker Irby is a dedicated healthcare professional and respected leader in nurse anesthesia, known for her commitment to clinical excellence, community service, and mentorship. A Watertown, Tennessee native, graduated as Salutatorian of Watertown High School’s Class of 1994. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Cumberland University and an M.S. in Nursing from Vanderbilt University, later completing her nurse anesthesia training at the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (MTSA), where she received the Bernard Bowen Award for excellence.

Tasha serves as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and Director of Risk, Quality, and Compliance at Anesthesia Medical Group, where she helps ensure safe, high-quality patient care. Her leadership extends beyond the clinical setting through passionate involvement in volunteerism and philanthropy.

She has volunteered with organizations including the Lebanon Junior Women’s League, My Sister’s Keeper, Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, Notes for Nurses, Wilson County Help Center, Sherry’s Hope, and the Gina Putnam Foundation, where she also serves on the board. Notably, she chaired Cumberland University’s Phoenix Ball, helping raise over $500,000 for scholarships and contributed to the creation of the Al Ashworth & Dallus Whitfield Endowed Memorial Scholarship.

RISING PHOENIX AWARD The Rising Phoenix Award recognizes alumni thirty-five years of age or younger who display outstanding leadership qualities and have exceptional achievement early in their careers, through public service, and/or volunteer activities. This prestigious award is being presented by the Cumberland University Alumni Association at the 2025 Commencement Exercises to the following recipient:

KARLIE CUNHA Karlie Cunha is a two-time alumnus of Cumberland University. Graduating in 2018 with her Bachelor of Fine Arts and in 2020 with her Master of Business Administration. She is the proud owner of Wild Colors Creative Design Studio in Lebanon, TN—a dream she’s nurtured since childhood. A lifelong creative and encourager, Karlie discovered her passion for teaching while working at Whiz Kids Preschool during and after her time at Cumberland. Her collegiate journey shaped her both personally and professionally, eventually leading her to serve as a Graduate Assistant and most recently as an adjunct professor, teaching foundational art courses.

A proud Lebanon native, third-generation female business owner, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, Karlie’s faith is the cornerstone of her life. Her mission is simple yet powerful: to use her art studio to share the light and love of Jesus with everyone who walks through its doors. With 29 years rooted in the Lebanon community, she is passionate about inspiring and nurturing the next generation of artists right at home.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Cumberland University Alumni Association on an outstanding alumna or alumnus. This award salutes the achievements of outstanding alumni whose personal lives, professional achievements, and community service exemplify the objectives of their alma mater. The Distinguished Alumni Award is intended to recognize both longevity and consistency of accomplishment over one’s professional lifetime and might not be awarded annually. This prestigious award is being presented by the Cumberland University Alumni Association at the 2025 Commencement Exercises to the following recipient:

WAYNE STARKS Wayne Starks, originally from White House, Tennessee graduated from Cumberland University with his Associate’s degree in 1967. As a student-athlete at Cumberland, he was a standout member of the 1966 men’s basketball team—the first in university history to earn a spot in the national tournament. In recognition of their historic achievement, the team was inducted into the Cumberland University Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

Wayne went on to earn his marketing degree from Middle Tennessee State University and later built a successful career as an entrepreneur, investor, and business leader. After relocating to Columbus, Georgia, he became a prominent figure in the medical staffing and real estate industries throughout Georgia and Alabama. His current company brings in nurses from 26 countries and places them in 44 of the 50 states.

A firm believer in the power of education and giving back, Wayne served as a member of the Cumberland University Board of Trust, where he continued to support the institution that helped shape his early life. Together with his wife, Stella, he established the Starks Family Scholarship Fund, created in honor of his parents, Odell and Esterlene Starks, and Stella’s mother, Tennie Mae Floyd.

The scholarship supports high school graduates in Robertson, Sumner, and Warren Counties— reflecting Wayne’s deep commitment to his Middle Tennessee roots. In addition to his scholarship at Cumberland, his family has endowed scholarships at three other institutions. He and his family support 14 nonprofits in three states. He believes in the bible verse, “In whom much is given, much is expected.”

In a continued display of generosity, Wayne returned to campus this past fall and awarded $72,500 in holiday stipends to support Cumberland’s athletic coaches and other athletic staff. Wayne Starks exemplifies the spirit of leadership, service, and philanthropy. His life and legacy serve as a powerful reminder that success is best measured not only by achievement—but by the impact made on others.

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS AMBASSADOR A.B. CULVAHOUSE, JR. Ambassador Culvahouse has led the highest levels of American government and built a distinguished international legal practice through five decades. A dedicated public servant, his work has been honored by US Presidents, and his counsel requested by many seeking to enter the White House.

In 2019, A.B. was sworn in as US Ambassador to the government and people of Australia. While leading the US Mission in Canberra, he facilitated American cooperation and aid during the tragic brush fires and global Covid crisis. A.B. worked to deepen economic engagement by developing strategically reliable critical minerals supply chains, frontier technologies, and joint endeavors in space exploration, earning him recognition as EAP Bureau Nominee for Outstanding non-career Ambassador.

A.B. served as White House Counsel to President Ronald Reagan, where he represented the President in the Iran-Contra investigations and advised on ratification of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty and Supreme Court nominations. Reagan awarded A.B. the Presidential Citizens’ Medal, an award established in 1969 to “recognize citizens who performed exemplary deeds of service for the country or their fellow citizens.”

Through over 40 years of work with O’Melveny & Myers LLP, A.B. guided the firm as Chair, Head of the Washington, DC Office, and Chair Emeritus. He brought world class expertise to matters on corporate governance, internal investigations, compliance, Congressional investigations, and strategic counseling, frequently at the highest level of geopolitical sensitivity regarding operations in China, the Middle East, and nations subject to US and international sanctions. His clients included the International Olympic Committee, major investment banks, energy concerns, Federal Reserve and SEC chairs, and he counseled corporate boards and audit committees for a wide range of multinational corporations.

A.B. was raised in Ten Mile, Tennessee, earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law. A.B. is the proud father of three accomplished daughters.

GRADUATION WITH HONORS The diplomas of graduating seniors will show honors categories based on the following scale: ▪ Cum Laude (with honors): 3.50 – 3.74 GPA ● Magna Cum Laude (with high honors): 3.75 – 3.89 GPA ♦ Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) 3.90 – 4.00 GPA These honors categories are based on a student’s cumulative grade point average at the end of the Fall 2024 semester. The honors category is also based on the cumulative grade point average of all Cumberland University course work at the end of the term preceding the graduation semester.

Graduating seniors are eligible for honors after completing at least twenty-five percent of credit hours required for the degree in courses at Cumberland University.

All honor students will wear a gold cord with their academic regalia. Names appear in the Commencement Program as Candidates requested they appear on their diplomas.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY Founded in 1842, Cumberland University holds a unique place in American history as one of the oldest liberal art universities in the South. Founded by leaders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Cumberland established a Law school, the first in Tennessee west of the Appalachian Mountains, a school of Engineering, and a school of Theology during the mid-1800s.

Cumberland was impacted by The Civil War when University Hall was burned to the ground during Union occupancy. After the destruction, a student wrote across a ruined Corinthian column the Latin word Resurgam, which translates to “I will arise.” Thus, from the ashes, the mythical phoenix became Cumberland’s enduring symbol which inspires the university to rise, endure, prosper, and illuminate the world. In 1892, Cumberland moved to its present location.

In 1946, The Tennessee Baptist Convention assumed control of the University, ending a century of operation under the Presbyterian Church. In 1956, the Board of Trust secured an amendment to the Charter, changed the institution to a private, independent corporation, and reopened the College of Arts and Sciences as a two-year institution, known as Cumberland College of Tennessee.

The Board of Trust expanded the academic programs of the Junior College in 1982. This expansion returned Cumberland to a four-year, degree-granting institution known again as Cumberland University. Its alumni include 14 governors, more than 80 members of the United States Congress, two United States Supreme Court Justices, three United States Ambassadors, a United States Secretary of State and founder of the United Nations.

Cumberland University draws on its enduring spirit of excellence to provide students from all backgrounds with a rounded education that is intensely personal, intellectually challenging, future focused and dedicated to preparing every individual for a meaningful career and fulfilling life.

Today, Cumberland continues to evolve to meet the needs of a diverse and expanding community while providing a transformational higher education experience through more than 100 fully accredited academic programs of study in three distinct schools.
