From Our

PRESIDENT

Some have heard me quip that a college degree today is tantamount to a high school diploma a generation or two ago, and that a graduate degree today is tantamount to a baccalaureate degree a generation or two ago. While the perceived value of a college degree has certainly been the target of criticism in recent years, the data still strongly suggests that the value of of earning a college degree has never been greater.

At a recent speaking engagement I attended at the annual Tennessee College Association (TCA) meeting in Nashville — which is a consortium of all higher education institutions, both public and private, across the state—Dr. Don Bruce, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Boyd Center for Business & Economic Research at the University of Tennessee, made a case for higher education. In his remarks, he shared that their most recent study indicates the average difference in lifetime earnings for those with a Bachelor’s degree versus a high school diploma has reached a new high of $1.4 million.

As the long-term value of a college degree continues to rise, and the projected earnings for college graduates increase accordingly, we also witness a consequential climb in tuition at many institutions. Contrary to these national trends,

experience. While several other private and public 4-year universities and all 13 community colleges across the state also offer the Tennessee Promise Scholarship, the graduation rate of Tennessee Promise students at Cumberland is approximately 20% higher than the best-performing community colleges. In addition to the Tennessee Promise program, Cumberland University proudly offers a wide range of endowed and performance-based scholarships, including those in athletics, fine arts, and academic achievement. These opportunities are made possible thanks to the unwavering generosity of our alumni and dedicated community supporters, whose continued investment helps us nurture the potential of every student who walks through our doors. While many colleges and universities across the nation have announced higher tuition, Cumberland University has proudly maintained its tuition for two of the past three years. Our continued efforts to control costs and expand scholarship offerings were recognized by Money Magazine when Cumberland was named one of the best-performing universities in the nation for affordability and value.

There is a phrase I have always appreciated: “The only thing rising faster than the cost of a college education is the cost of not having one.” At Cumberland University, we are working diligently to ensure that the opportunity to earn an increasingly valuable college degree remains both accessible and affordable to all who seek it. We are deeply grateful for the continued support of our community as we strive to transform lives through the power of education.

WHERE GRATITUDE: GIVING

THIRD ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

Cumberland University kicked off the rain-soaked month of April with our third annual Scholarship Dinner, which unites endowed scholarship recipients with the generous donors and families who fund their scholarships. This year’s dinner was the most attended, with over 160 students, faculty, and donors filling Baird Chapel.

The Scholarship Dinner serves as both a celebration and a time for reflection. It provides scholarship recipients the platform to personally express their appreciation for the individuals funding their education. For donors, the dinner is an opportunity to witness the real, life-changing impact their generosity has on students’ lives.

Megan Edwards, a class of 2026 student and recipient of the Effie Holloway Sloan Endowed Scholarship, Sean Putman Memorial Endowed Scholarship, and the W.G. & Blanche P. Catron Endowed Scholarship, took to the podium to describe the financial freedom her scholarships have afforded her. Edwards, like the vast majority of students at Cumberland, depends on the support of scholarship donors to pursue her education, and being able to thank them in person is a privilege.

DINNER MEETS

The crowd also heard from Tammye Whitaker, namesake of the Tammye & Gary Whitaker Endowed Scholarship. Whitaker shared the joy she felt in meeting the current recipient of her family’s scholarship, a powerful reminder that she is helping fund a real-life dream. Courtney Wheeler-Biggs, Cumberland’s Vice President of Advancement, echoed this sentiment, reinforcing to the crowd that philanthropy is all about making a lasting difference in the lives of others–often complete strangers.

“This evening fills me with so much inspiration,” shared Allie Poston, Cumberland’s former Scholarship Coordinator. “We have the privilege of connecting scholarship recipients with generous donors who make their dreams possible. Having been a recipient myself during my undergraduate studies at Cumberland, I understand the profound impact of receiving a scholarship and the importance of showing appreciation to those who made it happen. It is a heartwarming experience to hear the stories of students and the reasons why donors choose to create these life-changing opportunities.”

CU PARTNERS WITH NSCA:

A GRADUATE’S PATH TO PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Cumberland University had the unique opportunity to partner with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) to host the Southeast Regional Conference in Alumni Hall this past March.

Founded in 1978, the NSCA is an educational nonprofit dedicated to advancing science and education in the field. The NSCA supports and communicates research-based knowledge to improve athletic performance and fitness.

Representing Cumberland were Dean of the Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions, Dr. Jason Grindstaff; Esports Head Coach, Spencer Claypool; Director of Sports Performance, Gunnar Helland; and recent CU graduate and Sports Performance Graduate Assistant, Tyler Hanes.

For Hanes, this was a huge opportunity and step for his career. As a 2025 Master’s of Sport and Exercise Science graduate and aspiring professional in the field, playing a role in the organization of the conference and within CU’s presentations provided invaluable hands-on experience. Opportunities like this exemplify Cumberland’s vision to transform lives through the power of education, equipping students with real-world experiences that prepare them to lead and succeed in their chosen fields.

Reflecting on the conference, Hanes shared, “This conference gave me the chance to help others in the Health & Performance industry off the field so they can succeed in their own endeavors.”

He explained that the idea took shape during a conversation in spring 2024 with his director, Gunnar Helland. “We were discussing how the Strength and Conditioning department could provide a service to Cumberland and its community,” Hanes said. “Of all the ideas we had, this conference was the first I seriously pursued. After a full year’s worth of work, we successfully brought this event to life.”

Cumberland’s session, titled “Proliferation of Esports in Collegiate Athletics: The Emerging Role of Sport

Performance and Culture,” focused on the unique demands of esports athletes, while situating it in the broader conversation around modern collegiate athletics- one that questions how rising sports like esports fit into traditional athlete development techniques.

Hanes, along with Helland, addressed their approach to training esports athletes, emphasizing the importance of balancing screen time with physical training. Given the sport’s growing popularity, Cumberland’s Sports Performance team has adopted a holistic approach. This approach focuses on the relationship between endurance and mental sharpness, ensuring that the athletes are in peak decision making, stress managing, and competitive shape.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

“My participation in this event has already opened doors for me to volunteer at the 2025 NSCA National Conference this July in Kansas City,” Hanes shared, noting the connections he made through the regional conference. As he looks ahead to a full-time career in sports performance, experiences like this serve as a powerful reminder of the value of initiative, mentorship, and hands-on learning. Hanes’ story is just one example of how Cumberland equips its graduates to make an immediate impact in their chosen fields.

Cumberland University is proud to announce a developing partnership with the KazakhAmerican Free University (KAFU), a respected institution located in UstKamenogorsk, Kazakhstan. This initiative represents more than just a collaboration between two universities; it is a gateway to cultural exchange, academic growth, and transformative international experiences for students on both sides of the globe.

Founded in 1994, just three years after Kazakhstan gained independence, KAFU is the oldest private university in the country and a pioneer in higher education across Central Asia. The university offers more than 40 degree programs with particular strengths in Business, Economics, Law, Education, Psychology, and Foreign Languages. The KAFU Business School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, the same accrediting body that endorses Cumberland’s own business programs. This shared accreditation reflects a mutual standard of academic excellence and opportunity.

The emerging relationship between Cumberland and KAFU is built on the belief that education flourishes when ideas, cultures, and experiences are shared. Students from Cumberland will have the opportunity to study at KAFU for a semester or an academic year. A short-term study abroad program, lasting approximately two weeks, is also being planned to give students an intensive introduction to life and learning in Kazakhstan. In return, KAFU students will soon have the chance to study at Cumberland University, with the first group expected to arrive in the fall of 2025.

“We are very enthused about the growing relationship between Cumberland University and KAFU,” said Dr. Mark Hanshaw, Associate Provost and General Counsel for Cumberland. “This relationship presents opportunities for domestic students to engage in studies and research in partnership with a premier Central Asian university and for students from KAFU to travel to and experience our own campus culture. There are numerous options that we are exploring, each of which could enhance the educational experience for many students.”

Professor Sean McDaniel, who recently traveled to Kazakhstan, described the visit as deeply meaningful. “My first trip to Kazakhstan was certainly a transformative event in my life,” he said. “Our relationship with KAFU will hopefully enable us to participate in that growth through a program of mutual exchange. I look forward to fostering a relationship that will help provide similar opportunities for students on our campus.”

With instruction at KAFU offered in English, Russian, and Kazakh, students will be immersed in a multilingual and multicultural academic environment. This partnership reflects Cumberland’s ongoing commitment to providing students with access to experiences that broaden perspectives, deepen understanding, and prepare them for meaningful impact in an increasingly interconnected world.

CU ON STAGE:

Spring 2025 Arts Recap

The Cumberland University Theater Department had an exciting and busy spring 2025 semester, highlighted by a successful run of Sister Act and the return of the Arts Extravaganza. Proving that incredible talent and true theater can be found right here in Lebanon, Tennessee, CU students lit up the stages at both events with an unmatched passion for the performing arts.

The second annual Arts Extravaganza, with support from The Capitol Theatre, featured Cumberland students across several different fine and performing arts disciplines including music, theatre, art, and creative writing. The evening’s festivities included an art exhibition, instrumental ensembles, creative writing readings, theatre and dance productions, and choir performances. In addition, a silent auction was held to raise funds in support of the University’s arts programs.

The one-night-only event brought together a community of arts supporters to The Capitol Theater on March 22, elevating the local Wilson County arts scene and celebrating the creativity and collaboration that Cumberland University continues to nurture through its arts programs.

Just weeks later, on April 4, the June and Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center came alive with the energetic and empowering opening night of Sister Act, a divine musical comedy that showcased the exceptional talents of Cumberland University’s cast and crew.

Directed by CU’s Assistant Professor of Theatre, Jenny Ballard, the three-show run delivered over-the-top energy and incredible vocals that encouraged audience participation, bringing together the entire community for a memorable weekend.

“The musical and theatrical talent at Cumberland University is off the charts,” shared Ballard. “I’m honored to be a part of such a wonderful program. Make sure to join us for Grease and Waitress in November 2025 and April 2026, as well as our 3rd annual Arts Extravaganza in March 2026!”

Matthew P. Ashwood, an accomplished entrepreneur and advocate for education, has been elected to the Cumberland University Board of Trust.

As a first-generation college graduate, Ashwood deeply values education- a sentiment reflected in his leadership roles as Vice Chairman for the Equal Chance for Education Board and as a founding member and Chair of Cumberland’s Business Council.

Sam Hatcher, the Chairman of the CU Board, praised Ashwood’s commitment to student success and his already-established connection with the University as Chair of the Business Council.

“We are so very pleased that Matt has joined the Board of Trust,” shared Hatcher. “He has spent countless hours over the past couple of years serving as Chair of the University’s Business Council and has demonstrated his commitment and willingness to help ensure our students will be successful in their respective endeavors when they leave the Cumberland campus.”

Ashwood’s influence reaches far beyond the Cumberland campus. He is an active member of the Middle Tennessee community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Westminster Home Connections and the Westminster Presbyterian Church branch of Habitat for Humanity. He also volunteers with Living Waters for the World, a nonprofit organization that partners with communities to implement clean, sustainable water systems.

Ashwood’s entrepreneurial journey is just as impressive as his community involvement, fueled by an ambitious spirit and instincts that helped him build multiple successful businesses from the ground up. His first startup, The Merrimac Group, was a Nashville-based insurance brokerage firm specializing in replacing lost or damaged cell phones. Ashwood and his partner sold the business in 1999, and it later became known as Asurion, which now employs more than 23,000 people worldwide.

Following the launch and sale of The Merrimac Group, Ashwood took on the role of CEO at The Monitor Company, a yacht insur ance brokerage based in Delray Beach, Florida. The company was sold to its employees in 2002, leading Ashwood to his next business venture with Bonded Filter Co.

Under Ashwood’s leadership, Bonded Filter Co. blossomed into a nationwide organization with over $100+MM in revenue. Today, BFC is the nation’s largest HVAC-focused service provider in the facility services space. Though Ashwood stepped down from dayto-day operations with the company, he continues to serve as a shareholder and firm Director.

Ashwood shared his excitement about this new chapter with Cumberland, stating, “I am thrilled to join the CU Board of Trustees. What excites me the most is the opportunity to help men tor and nurture the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and inno vators for a brighter future here in Middle Tennessee & beyond.”

Cumberland University Student DETECTIVE ZACHARY PLESE

Receives Medal of Valor

“ I believe Cumberland University’s MSP Program has already enhanced my communication and critical thinking skills that I utilize in my everyday professional life. I also think it will have a major impact on my ability to take on leadership roles within my agency. ”

Detective Zachary Plese, a current Master of Public Service (MSP) student at Cumberland University, was among the eight recipients honored with the Medal of Valor by former President of the United States Joe Biden at the beginning of 2025.

The Medal of Valor is the nation’s highest award for courage exhibited by public safety officers, or others who have exhibited exceptional bravery, recognizing those whose extraordinary actions go above and beyond the call of duty. The nominees are recommended by the Attorney General and the Medal of Valor Review Board.

Detective Plese, who serves at the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, was one of the five first responders who risked their lives against the Covenant School shooter on March 27, 2023. Plese, along with Sergeant Jeffrey Mathes, Officer Rex Engelbert, and Detectives Michael Collazo and Ryan Cagle, responded to the tragedy with heroic bravery. These efforts earned them the Medal of Valor.

Established in 1996, Cumberland’s MSP program prepares students for careers that address some of the most pressing challenges facing society today. The twoyear program is designed for current and future managers employed by state and local government entities and non-profit organizations, with coursework in human relations, management, and research.

Reflecting on the impact of his studies on his work, Detective Plese shared, “I believe Cumberland University’s MSP Program has already enhanced my communication and critical thinking skills that I utilize in my everyday professional life. I also think it will have a major impact on my ability to take on leadership roles within my agency.”

Balancing a demanding career with educational pursuits, Detective Plese exemplifies the approachability and realworld application of Cumberland’s MSP program. The program accommodates busy professionals, giving flexibility and immediate value to those who apply what they learn in real-time.

Cumberland University legend Coach Woody Hunt was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the 17th class on February 13, 2025. This prestigious honor is the product of 41 years of leadership at Cumberland, a career that not only produced incredible talent but also cemented the University’s reputation in NAIA baseball.

“To be recognized in such a prestigious way feels like more than I deserve, and I am truly thankful,” Hunt explained in a statement that perfectly summarizes the humility and grace of the three-time NAIA National Champion coach. “I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Cumberland University for their unwavering support throughout my career.”

One of the most successful coaches in college baseball history, Hunt led Cumberland to 12 NAIA World Series tournaments and secured 20 regular-season conference championships across multiple conferences before retiring in 2021. Under his leadership, the program had 24 seasons with 40 or more victories, including eight seasons with over 50. Hunt’s career record stands at a remarkable 1,630-774-5. He is one of just eight coaches in all of college baseball history to win 1,600+ games and is sixth on the all-time wins list across all levels.

A LEGACY CEMENTED: Coach Woody Hunt Joins the

Hunt’s legacy has helped produce 69 NAIA All-Americans and 99 signed professional contracts, with former players including major leaguers Aaron Wilkerson, CU Trustee Mark Suarez, and Luis Martinez. He is no stranger to Hall of Fame recognition either, as his excellence has been recognized with inductions into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Cumberland Sports Hall of Fame, Boyle County Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. His contributions outside of the CU baseball stadium- now aptly named “Woody Hunt Stadium”have also been recognized, earning him the Pat Summitt Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and the Fred Russell Distinguished American Award from the National Football Foundation.

Joining Coach Hunt in the induction class were Ohio University great and 12-time MLB All-Star, Mike Schmidt; University of Texas legend and seven-time Cy Young Award winner, Roger Clemens; and Georgia Tech National Collegiate Player of the Year and threetime MLB All-Star, Mark Teixeira.

“Coach Woody Hunt is a legend in the baseball community and in the State of Tennessee,” praised Cumberland’s Vice President of Athletics, Ron Pavan. “He has put Cumberland University on the map with his baseball success. Coach Hunt is a great coach, but a better person.”

Beyond his success on the court, Ellis

Cumberland University’s growing student body is strongly supported by an evolving catalog of course offerings and experiential learning opportunities. The University is dedicated to preparing students for today’s dynamic workforce with a transformative education beyond the classroom.

This year, for the first time in its history, Cumberland University sent 11 students, three faculty, and one staff member to work Super Bowl LIX. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity inspired business and sports management students with unparalleled field experience and exclusive networking opportunities within professional sports. Students had the chance to interact with industry professionals, receive training in behind-the-scenes operations, and worked a 3 a.m. game-day shift at the stadium- all while immersing themselves in the rich Louisiana culture.

Dr. Joshua Greer, Cumberland’s first-year Sports Management Program Director, guided students through a week-long

introduction to the world of professional sports. Super Bowl LIX marked Greer’s seventh time attending the event, having previously chaperoned six Super Bowl trips with students at Bethel University.

“The Super Bowl isn’t just the biggest event in sports—it’s a massive operation that showcases the complexity of event management at the highest level,” explained Dr. Greer.

The expenses for this experiential learning opportunity were covered by the Bone Grant, a generous grant funded by former CU Board Chair and Trustee W.P. Bone and the Titans Ticket Sales Fundraiser, an initiative that gave a portion of ticket sales from designated Titans’ home games to Cumberland’s Sports Management program.

On February 4, the team embarked on a nearly nine-hour road trip to New Orleans, fueled by excitement and anticipation. Their first shift upon arrival was at the NFL Media Party, where they assisted in hosting and directing

media professionals and sports industry influencers. This event gave students the chance to connect with sports photographers, event planners, and journalists— setting the tone for the week ahead.

Throughout the week, the CU student representatives were involved in everything from behind-the-scenes operations to attending the NFL Super Bowl Experience, an interactive football festival where fans could meet NFL players and take photos with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Dr. Greer was intentional about providing networking opportunities to his students throughout the week. He dedicated two evenings to expanding their professional connections, which in turn helps increase Cumberland’s global reach. First, the group met with the students from the University of New England, allowing them to connect with like-minded peers eager to establish themselves professionally after graduation.

The following evening, they attended a larger networking session at a local

community college, where students from various universities had the opportunity to meet industry professionals. Three guest speakers, each holding various roles in the professional sports industry, shared their insights on event planning, management, and overcoming barriers in the field.

When game day arrived, the team clocked in for their 3 a.m. shift, spreading around the perimeter of the Caesars Superdome to greet and direct workers arriving before dawn. The students were immersed in the adrenaline rush of pulling together an event as massive as the Super Bowl, passing by the millions of individuals it takes to run a smooth operation.

“Getting to see even a small portion of how a major sports event is put together and knowing that thousands of volunteers have to come together to pull it off was incredible,” reflected Peyton Martin, a Cumberland Marketing junior. “Being able to play even a small role in this major operation was amazing, and I couldn’t thank the university or Dr. Greer enough for this opportunity.”

Cumberland was one of just 30 universities- alongside a private for-profit organization- privileged to work Super Bowl LIX and its associated events. Experiences like this are part of Cumberland’s commitment to preparing the next generation of professionals with the skills and experience needed to succeed in today’s competitive workforce.

The Cumberland baseball team swung for success this season, bringing home the MidSouth Conference Championship Woody Hunt Trophy for the first time in 11 years.

CUMBERLAND BASEBALL BRINGS HOME

Woody Hunt TROPHY

AFTER OVER A DECADE

The coveted trophy has returned to Lebanon, Tennessee, as the 2024–25 Phoenix made significant strides that culminated in a conference title.

Cumberland entered the tournament with a 33-15-1 overall record and a 13-5 mark in Mid-South Conference play. For perspective, the team finished the previous season with a 22-28 record, highlighting Head Coach Ryan Hunt’s ability to recruit, develop talent, and turn the program around in just one year.

Hunt’s efforts were recognized with his first Mid-South Conference Baseball Coach of the Year award. The son of Hall of Fame legend and trophy namesake Woody Hunt, Ryan made a major statement this season, leading his team to win every conference series and dropping only one series all year.

Ten Phoenix players earned spots on the Mid-South Conference AllConference team ahead of the tournament. Senior pitcher, Carter Post, also received national recognition, as he was named a third-team All-American for his efforts on the mound.

Cumberland then rolled through Georgetown College and Freed-Hardeman University before facing the No. 8 nationally ranked and top-seeded University of the Cumberlands.

After an assertive 11-4 win in their first matchup against the Patriots, Cumberland secured a spot in the championship game. The Cumberlands responded with a 5-3 win to force a winnertakes-all finale.

In a storybook ending, the Phoenix exploded late, scoring four runs in the seventh inning and four more in the eighth to blow open a tight game and secure a 12-6 victory.

PHOENIX TRACK & FIELD DOMINATES INDOOR SEASON

Cumberland University’s Track & Field program has long stood as one of the school’s most decorated athletic teams, and the 2024–25 indoor season was no exception. This year’s campaign featured ten conference champions, a national title, and a sweeping performance in the MidSouth Conference (MSC) Awards, on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Senior standout Praise Idamadudu continued to cement her legacy as a Phoenix, adding to an already illustrious career. She was named Mid-South Conference Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year for the third time, her fifth overall conference Athlete of the Year honor in her career. At the championship meet, she dominated the sprints, winning the 60m (7.50 seconds) and the 200m (24.85 seconds) while also claiming second place in the 400m (56.58 seconds).

Idamadudu’s achievements came under the leadership of Head Coach Atsu Nyamadi, who was named Mid-South

Conference Coach of the Year, and assistant coach Cecilia Francis Amou-Berry, who earned Assistant Coach of the Year. Both received their respective honors for the third time in their careers.

On the men’s side, the Phoenix brought home three individual conference champions at the Mid-South Conference Track & Field Indoor Championships.

Freshman Mustapha Bokpin made a huge impact, winning both the 60m (6.64 seconds) and 200m (21.26 seconds) titles. His outstanding performance earned him the title of Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year.

Kennedy Bett delivered a strong performance in the 3000m, securing the championship title with a time of 8:32.25. Cumberland also took home a relay title as the 4x400m team of Veron Ifill, Bokpin, Logan Istre, and Benjamin Nyakudya crossed the finish line first in 3:16.30.

On the national stage, Cumberland track & field wrapped up the NAIA Indoor

National Championships with Praise Idamadudu securing her seventh career national title while four other Phoenix earned All-American honors on the final day of competition.

Idamadudu successfully defended her title in the women’s 400m, crossing the line in 53.91 seconds to claim first place. She later earned national runner-up honors in the 200m with a time of 23.65, finishing just 0.06 seconds behind the first place finisher. Idamadudu has now collected 17 NAIA All-American honors in her career.

For the men, Mustapha Bokpin sprinted to a second-place finish in the 60m dash, clocking in at 6.69 seconds. He finished behind William Carey’s Barnabas Aggerh, who set both a facility and NAIA record with a time of 6.53.

At the conclusion of the championships, the Phoenix women tied for 11th place with 26 points, while the men placed 21st with 12 points and two AllAmerican finishes.

CUMBERLAND WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL TAKES FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRIP TO COSTA RICA

For the first time in program history, the Cumberland women’s volleyball team took their talents internationally, heading on a week-long trip to Costa Rica for an incredible opportunity to teach, play, and explore.

It was a trip two years in the making, described Head Coach Hannah Vadakin, who just concluded her fourth year in the position. Vadakin strongly believes that young athletes should have the opportunity to play and travel abroad- something she was determined for her players to experience.

Bring it on Promotions, a full-service volleyball travel agency, helped match the team with their destination, decided upon by factors such as cost and level of competition. With sights set on Costa Rica, the team spent nearly the next 12 months raising funds to make the trip a reality.

The entire trip was funded through a variety of efforts, including hosting camps for local middle and high schools, and an evening of team bonding over a phone-a-thon. The team formed a lucrative partnership with Nissan Stadium, which saw players working hands-on at concerts and Tennessee Titans games.

The teamwork and determination paid off with seven days across three cities in Costa Rica: San Jose, Jaco, and La Fortuna. Each day in this new culture brought bucket-list opportunities, like hiking and ziplining through a rainforest in La Fortuna, as well as opportunities for personal growth, like planting 25 native trees as part of a reforestation project.

The 21 players took to the court to run three different clinics around the country for young players and faced competition against local club teams.

Perhaps most fulfilling, however, was rounding out the week by volunteering at two disability centers. The first was an adult center that specializes in empowering people with disabilities, encouraging them to work and earn a living. The second center introduced the team to children of all ages and ability levels.

“Women’s volleyball had the amazing opportunity to step out of our normal routine over spring break,” Vadakin reflected. “On our seven-day trip to Costa Rica, our team participated in three friendly matches against local teams, led three clinics in local communities, volunteered at two centers for people with disabilities, and did a reforestation project. We planted trees, danced with new friends, and used our love of volleyball to cross language barriers.”

CUMBERLAND ATHLETICS LAUNCHES WOMEN’S FLAG FOOTBALL

The Cumberland University Athletics Department is continuing to raise the bar, solidifying its dominance and ingenuity among peer programs with the addition of women’s flag football, set to kick off during the 2025-26 academic year.

Women’s flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation today, and Cumberland stands proudly ahead of the trend. The sport first launched at the NAIA level in 2021 and has grown rapidly in the years since, with 22 featured teams in 2024.

Committed to offering students unique opportunities to grow and excel, the addition of women’s flag football makes 31 total sports programs at CU and the tenth women’s program.

Cumberland also sponsors 11 men’s sports, three co-ed sports, and seven junior varsity programs. This will be the ninth sport added since 2008 and the first since eSports in 2021.

“I am excited to announce that Steven Miller will be joining us as the new Head Women’s Flag Football Coach,” announced Vice President of Athletics, Ron Pavan. “With extensive experience as a football coach, principal, and athletic director, Steven brings a dynamic combination of leadership and expertise to our program. His deep understanding of high school athletics and recruiting will be invaluable as we add this program.”

Miller’s coaching background includes positions as a head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator across the country. He most recently served as the Defensive Coordinator at Jackson County High School, where he helped lead the team to the playoffs in 2021.

The Phoenix are just the second NAIA team in the state of Tennessee to add women’s flag football and the third in the MidSouth Conference. The team will compete during the spring season at Nokes-Lasater Field.

“I am very excited to be here at Cumberland University,” shared Miller.

“I am very blessed to get an opportunity to start the women’s flag football program. It is an exciting time to be involved with flag football, as we are seeing tremendous growth in the college and high school ranks. I’m excited to work with the women’s flag football community to grow the game and I look forward to creating a team at Cumberland University that can compete with the best that the NAIA has to offer.”

Stepping into the role of head coach and helping build the program from the ground up is Steve Miller, who brings 16 years of coaching experience to the position.

CUMBERLAND ALUMNI SPRING EVENTS

Check out a recap of our Spring Alumni Events!

It was an action-packed Spring semester for the Cumberland University Alumni Association, as they hosted five memorable events throughout the academic year, welcoming some familiar faces back to Lebanon.

“It’s been such a joy to welcome so many of our alumni back to campus this spring. Each event reminded us of the incredible impact our graduates continue to make and the strong sense of pride they carry for Cumberland,” shared former Cumberland Alumni Coordinator, Caroline Haynes. “These gatherings aren’t just about reminiscing—they’re about reconnecting, celebrating our shared history, and continuing to grow together as a Cumberland family.”

The University is committed to fostering, protecting, and nurturing its relationships with students, and this dedication extends well beyond graduation day. Events such as these are incredible opportunities for alumni to network, connect with one another, and continue sharing in the pride of their alma mater.

ATHLETIC TRAINING

In celebration of the National Athletic Training Month in March, the Alumni Association organized a special gathering for CU Athletic Training alumni and friends at Cumberland’s Center for Nursing Education, Simulation, and Training (CNEST). The morning was sponsored by Hughston Clinic Orthopaedics and celebrated the successful partnership between the clinic and the University’s athletic training program. Over a light breakfast, attendees engaged in meaningful conversations about the future of athletic training, reminisced about shared experiences from the program, and participated in a live dissection simulation.

EDUCATION

On March 25, Cumberland University’s education alumni were honored for their dedication to shaping the future of education. Dr. Sandy Smith, the Education Preparation Program Coordinator, and Academic Area Leader, shared updates on the program’s continued growth and success, highlighting the impressive results from Cumberland’s Educator Preparation Report Card. With a 91% first-year employment rate in Tennessee public schools and high retention rates—97% in the second year and 88% in the third year—the program continues to surpass state averages.

The evening also included the presentation of several awards to the Education Preparation Programs alumni and supporters: Becky House received the Outstanding Elementary School Cooperating Teacher award, Jason Dunn was honored as Outstanding Administrator, Rachael Agnew was named Outstanding Special Education Cooperating Teacher, and Taylor McElroy was celebrated as Outstanding Alumni. Additionally, Carol Melvin was recognized as the Outstanding Middle School Cooperating Teacher, Shelby Rich as Outstanding Secondary Cooperating Teacher, Courtney McFarland as Outstanding Physical Education Cooperating Teacher, and Tina Amelunke as Outstanding Fine Arts Cooperating Teacher.

SPORTS MANAGEMENT

Cumberland University’s Sports Management program had an eventful first year under the leadership of Dr. Josh Greer, Program Director for both undergraduate and graduate tracks. Highlights of the year include a trip to the Super Bowl and participation in two National Collegiate Sports competitions, showcasing the program’s new focus on hands-on, experiential learning. These accomplishments were celebrated at the Sports Management Pro Day Lunch & Learn, a networking event designed to connect students and alumni.

Dr. Jason Grindstaff, interim Dean of the Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions, expressed his excitement about the changes seen in the program in such a short time. In emphasizing experiential learning, Dr. Grindstaff explained, Cumberland is preparing sports management students for one of the most competitive industries to break into: sports.

Additional speakers at the event included Ryan Ruff and Natalie Logan from the Tennessee Titans, along with 2020 and 2021 Cumberland graduate Jake Croasman, a Guest Experience Team Member with the Nashville Predators.

SOCCER

FOOTBALL

Cumberland’s inaugural Football Reunion was a resounding success, bringing together former Bulldogs and Phoenix on the evening of April 4. Sponsored by Cedar City Brewing Co. and Sallis Realty Group, the event not only honored the program’s history but also built excitement for its promising future.

Kenny Sallis, a CU football alum who also just ended his term on Cumberland’s Alumni Board, spoke to the unique bond that CU’s football program creates, and the responsibility fellow alumni have to keep it strong. Tim Mathis, Cumberland’s head coach, also spoke to the crowd, sharing exciting updates on his current roster and the vision he has for the program’s future- which includes making this event a yearly occurrence.

The final Alumni Association event of the season brought former Cumberland men’s soccer players back to Lindsey Donnell Stadium for a friendly alumni match against the current roster. The match brought together players from different generations and served as a reminder of the special bond that forms between members of athletic teams, especially at Cumberland University.

NATHALIE NUTU’S CUMBERLAND YEARS

For many students, college is a chapter; for some, it’s the beginning of a whole new story. Such is the case for Cumberland University alumna, Nathalie Nutu, who came to Lebanon, Tennessee, from Sweden with dreams of becoming a professional golfer and left with a vision far more expansive.

“My favorite memory?” she asks, “When the women’s [golf] team won conference. We fought so hard that year. That moment, it was pure joy. We did it together.”

That theme, togetherness, echoes through her reflections on CU. Whether on the green or in class, it was the relationships that defined her time here. “Being so close to my friends, creating a family away from my family that was really special,” Nathalie says.

Arriving as a student-athlete, Nathalie quickly fell in love with the sciences and created a clear plan to enter the medical field. She double-majored in chemistry and biochemistry, completing pre- med requirements along the way. But it was outside the lab, during an internship with CU’s marketing team, that something shifted. “I realized how much I love solving complex problems and that I didn’t have to choose between science and creativity. I could do both.”

Today, she’s building a dynamic career that blends those exact interests. As the founder of her own consulting company, she works with international clients across industries from banking and marketing to sports and tech. She leads strategy, designs websites, runs campaigns, and dives deep into AI-driven solutions.

Though she’s already a graduate, Nathalie has never stopped learning. She’s completing a bachelor’s in economics and preparing to begin a five-year master’s program in industrial engineering and

management in Sweden.

“It’s the perfect blend of science and economics. Honestly, it feels like me in a nutshell.”

She credits CU for planting the seeds. “Being in such a diverse environment taught me to stay open-minded, adaptable, and curious. That’s shaped how I approach both business and life.”

A LIFE TAKING SHAPE A WORLD AWAY

But the legacy she speaks of isn’t just academic. It’s personal.

“Moving across the world, away from everything familiar, I had to grow up fast. But CU gave me the space to do that, to take risks, to redefine success on my own terms. I left knowing who I am and what I’m capable of.”

She now mentors young entrepreneurs, works on accessibility tools for learners with disabilities, and speaks openly about creating a life that integrates passion, purpose, and adaptability. “You can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and I want to help as many people as I can along the way.”

For Nathalie, Cumberland is not just a university. It’s the place where potential met possibility and her life was transformed.

CUMBERLAND B WLING

MAKES HISTORY WITH NAIA TOURNAMENT DEBUT

Cumberland’s men’s and women’s bowling teams made history during the 2024 season with the program’s first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament and a strong showing in the Mid-South Conference.

The women’s team impressed throughout conference play, finishing second in the Mid-South Conference Tournament out of eight competing teams. Their consistent efforts throughout the season led to Christina Hollis being named Mid-South Conference Women’s Coach of the Year, an impressive achievement in just her fourth season with the Phoenix.

Under Hollis’ leadership, the Phoenix placed four bowlers on All-Conference teams, including Jennifer Chiarillo, who became the first MSC Freshman of the Year in program history.

The women’s success extended beyond conference play, reaching as high as No. 5 in the national RPI rankings with a .628 rating, a new program record.

The men’s team also had a standout season, culminating in Chris Hollis being named Mid-South Conference Men’s Bowling Assistant Coach of the Year. He helped guide four bowlers to AllConference honors and, most notably, led the team to its first NAIA National Tournament appearance.

The Phoenix earned their spot as one of six at-large selections determined by the NAIA Bowling Selection Committee, which evaluates teams based on overall season performance.

Cumberland University’s 2025 Commencement

Ceremonies celebrated 615 bachelor’s graduates and 379 master’s graduates as they stepped into the next chapter of their lives, marking the culmination of years of growth and academic achievement.

As the undergraduate students prepared to turn their tassels, they were inspired by the poignant words from Arthur B. Culvahouse, former U.S. Ambassador to Australia. Culvahouse’s story of small town beginnings carried a powerful message: no dream is too distant when led by integrity and ambition.

Over the past five decades, Culvahouse has held leadership roles at the highest levels of American government while building a respected international legal practice. In 2019, Culvahouse was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the government and people of Australia. While leading the U.S. Mission in Canberra, he facilitated American cooperation and aid during Australia’s devastating bushfires and the global COVID-19 pandemic.

He also championed deeper economic cooperation, advancing initiatives in critical mineral supply chains, cutting-edge technologies, and joint space exploration efforts. His leadership earned him recognition as the East Asia and Pacific Bureau’s nominee for Outstanding Non-Career Ambassador.

Earlier in his career, Culvahouse served as White House Counsel to Ronald Reagan, representing him during the Iran-Contra investigations and advising on ratification of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty and Supreme Court nominations.

For over 40 years, Culvahouse has brought world-class expertise to O’Melveny & Myers LLP, where he served as Chair, Head of the Washington, D.C. office, and later as Chair Emeritus.

A native of Ten Mile, Tennessee, Culvahouse’s story of local roots blossoming into a prominent career in global affairs and presidential counsel reminded the Class of 2025 to follow their passions proudly, no matter where they begin.

Listen to a heartfelt “Thank You” from some of our 2025 Graduates!

Presidential History Comes to Life at Cumberland:

JAMES BRADLEY DELIVERS CYNTHIA VAN BUREN LECTURE

On Monday, February 17, Cumberland University welcomed historian and author James M. Bradley to deliver the Spring 2025 Cynthia Van Buren Lecture. His talk, “Revenge or Redemption? Martin Van Buren’s Run for the Presidency with the Free Soil Party in 1848,” drew a full crowd to Alumni Hall and offered fresh insight into an often overlooked chapter of American political history.

Bradley, an instructor in the public history program at the State University of New York at Albany, is co-editor of the Papers of Martin Van Buren, a pioneering digital humanities project based at Cumberland. His recent biography, Martin Van Buren: America’s First Politician (Oxford University Press), has received wide acclaim, with the Wall Street Journal describing it as “engaging and careful,” and Kirkus calling it “a gem for students of U.S. history and politics.”

The Cynthia Van Buren Lecture series honors the legacy of Palm Beach philanthropist Cynthia Van Buren, whose $100,000 bequest in 2020 helped lay the foundation for the Van Buren papers project’s long-term success. Her vision and generosity continue to shape the project’s mission of making presidential history widely accessible.

“James Bradley’s role in this project cannot be overstated,” said Dr. Mark Cheathem, Professor of History and Director of the Papers of Martin Van Buren. “He was the first to envision a digital edition of Van Buren’s presidential papers, and his leadership has been instrumental since the beginning.”

The Papers of Martin Van Buren is an ambitious effort to digitize and publish approximately 14,000 documents written by or sent to the eighth president. The project is hosted at vanburenpapers.org and is supported by Cumberland University, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the Center for Digital Editing at the University of Virginia.

Bradley’s lecture not only showcased the scholarly value of the project, but also highlighted Cumberland’s unique role in preserving and promoting the legacy of a consequential, yet often underestimated, figure in American history. Continued support ensures this vital work can grow and serve future generations of historians, educators, and engaged citizens.

Cumberland University honors the life and legacy of Dr. Michael Spalding, whose unwavering commitment to service and advocacy for education will impact generations to come.

Dr. Spalding served on Cumberland’s Board of Trust, most recently as Chair of the Academic and Student Affairs Committee, leading with a profound dedication to education and a belief in its accessibility.

Following a decades-long career in urology and medical leadership, Dr. Spalding devoted his retirement to founding Equal Chance for Education (ECE), a nonprofit that has provided over 600 scholarships to undocumented students pursuing college degrees. He served unpaid as President and Chief Fundraiser, a role that became his passion and full-time job.

In 2021, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to medicine, service, and education, Cumberland established the Dr. Michael J. Spalding Endowed Professorship in Nursing. The inaugural recipient, Dr. Beth Chatham, now Cumberland’s Director of Nursing Programs, continues his legacy through her work in healthcare, student mentorship, and servant leadership.

From his service in the U.S. Navy to his years in medicine, and later through his work with ECE, Dr. Spalding devoted himself fully to the well-being of others. Cumberland University will continue to carry forward his vision, ensuring the power of education remains a transformative force for future generations of students.

In Memoriam DR. MICHAEL SPALDING

For 41 years, the Phoenix Ball has united the Middle Tennessee community and championed Cumberland’s mission through a night of celebration, entertainment, and the opportunity to transform lives.

lars towards scholarships and programs.

The impact of the Phoenix Ball extends far beyond a single evening. Thanks to the generosity of Phoenix Ball patrons, Cumberland is able to provide critical financial assistance to students through the Phoenix Promise and Cumberland Promise programs. During the last academic year alone, 319 students received this support, with 69 awarded through the Phoenix Promise and 250 through the Cumberland Promise.

This year’s Chairs, Kevin and Christine New, brought to life a vision filled with twinkling stars, community connection, and a night dedicated to making the pursuit of education possible for Cumberland students. In a moment of heartfelt appreciation, the News addressed the packed Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena, inviting guests to celebrate the incredible impact unfolding right before their eyes.

One of the highlights of the evening came when representatives of the Kosloski Family Foundations presented a $200,000 grant check in support of Cumberland’s Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions’ new Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing (PMHNP) track, set to launch in the fall of 2025. The gift marks a significant investment in the future of nursing education at CU.

After a successful launch during last year’s Ball, the live paddle raise continued as an inspiring initiative, with proceeds dedicated to the Phoenix Ball Endowed Scholarship, which will be awarded at the beginning of the 2026 academic year.

Before the raise, attendees heard from Lily McPeak, who was the first-ever recipient of the Al Ashworth and Dallus Whitfield Endowed Scholarship established by Tasha and Brad Irby in 2023. Lily’s story made this raise especially personal and motivating, a powerful reminder that real lives are changed by the generosity of this community.

In addition to the paddle raise, Phoenix Ball guests were given the opportunity to show their support by bidding on items in both a silent and live auction.

The evening’s success would not have been possible without the generous backing of dedicated sponsors. For the third consecutive year, Hunt Brothers Pizza returned as the Presenting Sponsor, continuing a strong and valued partnership with the event. Other local supporters, including Carroll Homes as this year’s Phoenix Sponsor, are pivotal to bringing the vision of the Ball to life and helping make educational opportunities possible for CU students.

“It was a truly magical night, not just because of the theme but because of the overwhelming support shown for Cumberland students,” reflected the News. “The generosity and values of our beloved community were on full display, and witnessing everyone coming together with such purpose was incredibly inspiring.”

Relive a night under the stars full of dancing, music, and impact!

2025 IMPACT REPORT

Thank you for your loyalty and support of Cumberland University. We are excited to present our fourth annual Impact Report for Fiscal Year 2024-25. It continues to be our priority to provide a report detailing how your gift makes a unique impact on our students and how you are helping us transform lives through the power of education. This is our chance to celebrate you and your support of CU!

Cumberland’s growth in enrollment, philanthropic gifts, and endowment this fiscal year is a direct result of your continued commitment. Together, we celebrated the creation of a new endowed professorship and four new endowed scholarships. We also received generous support to establish the Palla International Student Services Center, named the Randall and Peggy Clemons Lecture Hall, hosted our third annual Scholarship Dinner, and launched the Heifner Martin Endowed Lecture Series with Mrs. Charlie Blackwell Thompson, NASA’s first-ever female launch director.

At this year’s Commencement, Cumberland proudly graduated over 1,000 students representing 60 Tennessee counties, 38 states, and 64 countries—a powerful reflection of our expanding reach and impact. Thanks to your generous support of the Rise Together Annual Giving Appeal during Giving Tuesday, Giving Week, and The Final Stretch, we were able to provide critical student support services to our students. And, our Alumni Office continues to thrive, helping to raise alumni giving participation to its highest level in recent history.

As Cumberland grows, so does our vision. We are now looking ahead to expanding our campus capacity with plans for additional classroom space, new residence housing, and enhanced facilities to support our dedicated faculty and ever-growing student body. It is an exciting time to be a Phoenix!

Please enjoy this report and I hope you will continue to support our vision and community. At the end of this report there are opportunities to continue to invest in CU, please consider joining the President’s Club. And, we in turn, will continue to report how your investment is transforming the lives of our Cumberland students.

Sincerely,

What we Achieved Together this 2024-2025 Fiscal Year

Mission: Our mission is to build a culture of philanthropy within our Cumberland community so we can continue to support our students, faculty and staff, and community. By giving to Cumberland University you are helping us protect and grow the treasure that CU is to so many. And, an important part of building that culture is that we let you know where and how your investment is making a difference in the lives of our Cumberland students, faculty and facilities.

We had another year of growth raising over $6.26M from 3,954 gifts.

Here is a breakdown:

Total Raised Restricted, Foundations & Grants Over $4,000,000

Total Raised for Annual Giving Campaign Over $1,300,000

Total Raised for Endowed Scholarships and Professorships Over $960,000 *All financials based on 6.1.24 - 5.31.25 fiscal year except Board of Trust and Faculty/Staff*

MAJOR GIFTS

“Major gifts (defined as $25,000 or more) have a powerful and lasting impact on Cumberland, touching the lives of our students, faculty, and the entire campus community. These generous contributions help open doors through scholarships, support faculty, and bring new opportunities to life—whether through updated learning spaces, innovative programs, or meaningful research. More than just financial support, major gifts are expressions of belief in the University’s mission and a shared commitment to its future. They allow the University to dream bigger, reach farther, and change more lives for the better.”

SCHOLARSHIPS

Endowed scholarships make a significant impact on a student’s ability to reach their dreams and goals. Unlike a one-time donation, an endowed scholarship is a permanent fund that generates interest annually to support student scholarships. Thanks to the continued generosity and support of our committed donors four new endowed scholarships were established this year. These scholarships allow us to further our mission of transforming lives through the power of education.

Please save the date for our next Annual Scholarship Dinner on March 31st, 2026. We look forward to this great event to connect our scholarship supporters and the scholarship recipients. Please contact the Office of Advancement at advancement@cumberland. edu or Executive Director of Advancement, Jenny Bennett at jbennett@cumberland.edu for more information.

PROFESSORSHIPS

University Professorships are awarded to faculty at Cumberland who have had a significant impact. The impact may be in the areas of policy development, teaching, curricular change, innovative programs, or academic leadership. The honor recognizes individuals whose actions have improved the quality with which the University advances its mission. Professorships enhance universities by providing a stable academic workforce that can teach, conduct research, and contribute to the intellectual community.

This year, we proudly established the Joe Scarlett Endowed Professorship in Business Leadership, awarded to Dr. Valerie King, Business Academic Area Leader; Associate Professor of Marketing.

ESTATE GIFTS

As we reflect on the history of these professorships at CU, we remember that Dr. Suzann Lafferty, Assistant Professor and Program Director Criminal Justice and Homeland Security and General Tom P. Thompson, Jr. Professor of Criminal Justice, was the first recipient. We are excited to share how she is enhancing the lives of her students through this professorship.

In fall 2025, Dr. Lafferty plans to take her students to the American Mock Trial Association to participate in the national tournament. Exposing CU students to mock trials offer valuable experience in critical thinking, public speaking, and legal procedures - critical traits for any career. And, the data collected by Force Science and Vir-Tra during an on-campus event hosted by CU Criminal Justice using the Vir-Tra simulator were recently published as an article (Time to Stop: Firearm Simulation Dynamics) in the Journal of Forensic Biomechanics. Thank you to the generosity and supporters of the General Tom P. Thompson, Jr. Endowed Professorship for making these enriching experiences possible.

Estate gifts, also known as planned gifts, are an effective way to support charitable causes even after an individual’s lifetime. These gifts can include bequests in a will, charitable trusts, or gifts of life insurance policies. The impact of estate gifts lies in their ability to create a lasting impact and legacy. Additionally, estate gifts can often provide tax benefits for donors and their heirs. Overall, estate gifts can be a powerful tool for individuals who want to make a meaningful difference in the world.

Cumberland University is honored to receive a generous gift from the estate of Joyce Vise, continuing a legacy of philanthropy rooted in resilience and a deep belief in the power of education. The Vise family’s enduring commitment to Cumberland is reflected in the naming of our library in memory of Joyce’s parents, Doris and Harry. Harry was a Holocaust survivor who was a devoted advocate for higher learning and civic service. Harry served on the Cumberland University Board of Trust for several years and was instrumental in expanding CU’s campus during that time. Joyce Vise continued her father’s legacy by speaking annually at CU’s Holocaust Remembrance Day. Recently, David Vise, son of Harry and Doris and Joyce’s brother, was named a Cumberland University Trustee. The Vise family legacy is truly marked by generations of dedication, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.

“I am very excited to step into the role of Alumni Relations Manager. As a two-time alumna of Cumberland, I’ve truly cherished my time here—both as a student and as a full-time employee. I’m excited to connect with fellow alumni, foster relationships, and help reconnect alumni with one another while sharing all the exciting developments happening at Cumberland. Over the past two years, I’ve served as the Scholarship Coordinator, where I had the rewarding opportunity to connect with students, encourage them to apply for scholarships they may not have known about, and support them on their path to graduation. I also had the privilege of working with generous donors who are passionate about helping students succeed.

Alumni engagement has grown significantly over the past few years thanks to the efforts of our previous Alumni Relations Coordinator, and I’m eager to build on that foundation to expand our alumni network and involvement even further. Cumberland has recently enjoyed hosting a variety of alumni events and welcoming graduates back to campus. I look forward to continuing that momentum by connecting with both alumni and community members to strengthen relationships, increase engagement, and support the continued growth of the Cumberland family! ”
