A Message from Marisha

Welcome to our Summer 2023 Newsletter! This season, we’re celebrating both growth and notable achievements. We’ve added new team members and proudly recognized the promotions of seven faculty members to Associate Professor and four to Professor. Inside this edition, discover our collaboration with the virtual health center, a testament to our commitment to ensuring rural communities receive essential care and to building novel care models. As we evolve and build new clinical care models, we also cherish opportunities to both teach and learn. One such highlight has been the arrival of our Health Innovations Scholars, who are eagerly delving into health care redesign. We hope that you will explore this edition as we celebrate these milestones and more and hope that you find as much joy in it as we did curating it for you!

Incoming Health Innovations Scholars Program

The Health Innovations Scholar Program (HISP) is an intensive training program for medical students who seek to lead innovative transformation of American healthcare. Though advances in science, technology, and models of collaboration promise continued discovery and improvement in human health, the care systems designed to bring benefits to patients do not live up to their potential. This program wouldn’t be successful without the help of our leadership including, Tyler Anstett, DO, Michelle Fleshner, MD, and Sam Porter, MD.

Yassine Lamzadrhi

Yassine is a medical student from Morocco, 2 years away from defending his MD thesis and graduating from Cheikh Anta University Faculty of Medicine in Dakar, Senegal. He is fluent in three languages and has a black belt 1st Dan in Aikido. He loves photography, music, traveling, discovering new cultures, leadership and volunteering.

Kimia Ziafat

Kimia is an incoming 2nd year medical student at University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and she is originally from Iran. She is most excited to learn about the similarities and differences between the Canadian and U.S. healthcare systems through the HISP in an aim to advocate for more equitable and accessible patient care.

Michelle Yan

With a large portion of her life spent in Washington State and Vancouver, BC, Michelle has grown a great appreciation for the outdoors, cultural exchange, and the arts. She’s so excited to be a part of the HISP program to gain applicable skills that can contribute to better patient experiences on a systemic level in our healthcare system!

Emmanuel Cruz

Emmanuel is a native New Jersian and medical student here at CU Anschutz. He loves his poodle Ada, grilling anything from Costco, and bachata dancing. His background is in chemistry, business, and computer science with four years in small biotech drug discovery. Learning from others around the U.S.

We had the honor to welcome several different professionals through webinars and on our campus to share their expertise in several different areas. Some of these topics included patients experiencing delirium, writing tips and tricks, and policy as it relates to healthcare.

Visiting Professors Program

The DHM Visiting Professor Program is an exchange program that gives CU faculty opportunities to lecture at outside institutions and brings faculty from outside institutions to the University of Colorado. We host a visiting professors quarterly and get the opportunity to learn from fellow healthcare professionals on their recent research and healthcare knowledge. This past quarter we had the privilege to hear from professionals from the University of Wisconsin as well as University of California San Francisco.

Innovations Grant: Writing Speakers Series

Dr. Mark Kissler was awarded a small innovations grant for his Writing Speaker Series idea. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Narrative Medicine for the Division of Hospital Medicine. So far, this grant has brought the knowledge of two amazing professionals. Each speaker shares about their work, participates in a Q&A session, and then offers a small group writing session. Learn more about them below! We are looking forward to the future Innovation Grant Speakers Series sessions!

Dr. Ricardo Nuila brought a unique perspective to our group as an Associate Professor of Medicine, Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine, as well as an internist and hospitalist at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, TX. He has used the power of narrative writing to tell the story about healthcare in America. He read through a few passages from his book “The People’s Hospital”. This was following by a great small writing session with individuals eager to learn more about strengthening their own writing skills and learning about the power of narrative writing.

Patrice Gopo is an award-winning essayist and the author of books for adults and children. In her work, she often returns to themes of race, immigration, identity formation, and belonging. With eloquence born of pain and longing, her reflections invited us to consider our own journeys toward belonging. She provided the group with a reading and a conversation about the ways writing can contribute to advocacy, reflection, and care.

Leadership Updates

APP Clinical Lead

Stacey

Q: What is your clinical background/what brought you to apply for this role?

A: I have been a PA in the DHM since 2015 and prior to that a hospitalist PA at Denver Health and worked in the St. Anthony’s emergency departments (EDs). Our DHM APPs are arguably the most astute clinicians at navigating hospital operations and see a high volume of patients. Thus, we are also well-poised to identify potential project opportunities and inform quality improvement (QI) efforts. This role is an excellent opportunity to engage our APPs in QI efforts and to develop my own skills in this arena.

Q: What will you be doing in this role?

A: I will be attending DHM Quality Action Committee (QuAC) meetings providing input and APP perspectives on the direction of DHM Quality/Patient Safety work and assisting with bidirectional communication between the QuAC and APP faculty. Additionally, the goal is to partner with other QuAC leaders to develop quality projects and dashboards that are specific to APPs.

Q: What are you hoping to accomplish in this position?

A: I aim to build my own skillset in QI, provide input into ongoing efforts, and connect other APPs with projects of interest. I also serve as the Assistant Service Line Director for the Hospital Medicine Service. In this role, we are working to implement more Quality Improvement efforts within the service line, so this role is very complimentary and provides an opportunity to gain skills and partners to implement QI efforts into the HMS service line. Additionally, building APP-specific dashboards can provide our APPs data to support their professional development and promotions.

Q: What are you most excited for?

A: I am excited for the opportunity to advocate for our patients and providers, and, on a personal level, I look forward to additional mentorship and learning in QI. I hope this role allows me to participate in efforts that improve care for our patients and that I can mentor other APP faculty in getting involved in QI efforts. In many cases, efforts to improve the quality of care for our patients by improving and streamlining processes can benefit not only our patients, but also positively impact provider satisfaction and wellbeing, so I look forward to supporting our faculty in this capacity as well.

Both Michelle and Carolina have been active participants and advocates in our Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and procedure service lines. In this new leadership position, they will continue working on implementing POCUS in our Division. We hope to spread the knowledge and the use of POCUS among our clinicians. We will mentor those more interested in building their portfolios and becoming credentialed in POCUS.

Together they are hoping to enhance the knowledge and application of POCUS within our division. Like reading X-rays or EKGs, I hope our providers feel confident enough to know the application and interpret ultrasound images. Lastly, but equally important, I hope to inspire others to use POCUS in their daily clinical work. They look forward to being the face of POCUS in our division, and share their passion for POCUS!

Hospitalist Highlight: Q&A with Co-Associate Division Head

How long have you been with CUDHM?

3 years, 9 months

What do you love most about being a hospitalist?

I love the diversity of patients and clinical conditions that we see as a hospitalist – each day is different! In the last decade, hospitalists have become integral in the advancement of quality, patient safety and medical education around the nation and it has been exciting to see the field evolve and have such varied opportunities. Lastly, I am fortunate to work alongside and learn from so many accomplished colleagues in the Division of Hospital Medicine at CU.

Do you have any interesting projects or grants going on right now?

Most of my recent effort has been working alongside Darlene Tad-y, MD, MBA and the UCHealth Virtual Health Center to successfully start a Virtual Hospital Medicine service (VHM) providing night coverage to critical access and remote hospitals in Colorado.

What advice do you have for someone who is considering hospital medicine or in their early career as a hospitalist?

For early career hospitalists, I’d recommend pursuing opportunities that sound interesting – as you get involved with projects, committee work or education you will start to identify mentors and figure out your future career goals.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m an amateur equestrian and compete frequently with my horse, Lucky Number Slevin. I also make pottery and love Peloton!
