Hospitalist Service at the Beginning of March!
with
We are thrilled to have recently added APPs on to our Virtual Hospitalist Service allowing this service to reach a wider patient audience. We look forward to seeing the impact of this increased reach and better connect without community. It is always our mission to focus on team-based care and this is just another way we are keeping true to that focus!
Faculty appointments were recently expanded at Denver Health to include APPs. Help us congratulate Sarah Cope, NP who received her appointment as assistant professor, as well as Brendan Notestein, NP and Janice Van Bockern, PA-C who were appointed as instructors on January 1, 2025.
Our favorite day of the year has come and passed, but we will hold on to the positive influx of messages and celebrations that honored our hospitalists!

Started in 2009, the Advanced Practice Fellowship is one of the oldest Advanced Practice Provider inpatient training fellowships based on the successes of the Division's Hospitalist Training Program for Internal Medicine Residents. Our Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship program uses a multiphase approach to develop learners into well-rounded, competent inpatient clinicians. The Division of Hospital Medicine (DHM) has built core clinical teams around fellows in order to provide opportunities for high-yield, bedside clinical instruction from talented Physician and Advanced Practice Provider (APP) faculty. In addition to a strong clinical core, the APF utilizes frequent didactic sessions and case-based learning to enhance fellow development.
Help us welcome the three newest members of the March 2025 Cohort!

Grace Maurer, BSN, RN
Grace is an amazing contributor to our CUDHM admin team. In her role as Value-Based Care Program Manager, she works closely with our CARE Clinic team to provide support with oncology-related programs. Her background Inpatient Oncology & Hospice, UCHealth, as well as her degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she is uniquely qualified to manage these complex programs. Some of those programs include: Advance Care Planning, CARE Clinic, Collaborative Case Reviews, Electronic Symptom Management, and Oncology Provider/Team Quality Scorecards. She loves learning more about the ins and outs of hospital medicine and looks forward to learning more about the business operations side of things. Thank you for the incredible work you do!
Kimberly Indovina, MD

We offer quarterly “lung ultrasound and finding fluid” workshops that are four hours long and available to all CU faculty. The goal of these workshops is to provide faculty with the skills to obtain good quality lung ultrasound and pleural effusion/ascites images and integrate these scans into their clinical practice. The time is split between hands-on scanning practice and case review. During these workshops, we also provide the criteria for hospital credentialing and assist faculty in beginning this process. Congrats to the most recent faculty who went through the workshop and earned their lung ultrasound credentials! Learn more about our Lung POCUS

The DHM Visiting Professor Program is an exchange program that gives CU faculty opportunities to lecture at outside institutions and brings faculty from outside institutions to the University of Colorado. We love getting the opportunity to hear from outside healthcare experts, gaining different perspectives and institutions! Since its inception in 2022 the exchange program has brought an average of 7 visiting professors per year to the University of Colorado and sent 7 of our DHM faculty as visiting professors to outside institutions.
We kicked off the year strong with Dr. Maya Defoe from Northwestern University with her presentation on Tackling Physician Burnout. During the presentation she taught how to: Define burnout and engagement, identify causes of burnout, and describe frameworks to address burnout.
Outside of professors visiting our campus, we've had several individuals present at outside institutions. In 2024, Dr. Maria Klimenko from University of Colorado giving a talk on hospitalist identity and mentoring at John's Hopkins University. Check out her photo to the left!
We have a great line up of visiting professors for 2025 coming to our campus! We are excited to learn from these incredible individuals and put into practice what we learn. Stay informed on our program by following us on social media - our platforms can be found at the end of this newsletter!
The Department of Medicine has adjusted the structure of their wellness initiatives to empower wellness leads at the division-level. Congratulations to the team below!
We conduct quarterly check-ins with faculty and staff to identify areas where we can offer support. Based on the feedback gathered during these check-ins, the wellness team aims to implement meaningful improvements.
The wellness team has created their very own wellness cart to spread wellness through items like fidget toys, snacks, goal journals, etc.
The wellness team is creating a network of peer supporters, providing training to help them effectively support their colleagues. Individuals are encouraged to reach out anonymously to be matched with a peer for enhanced support.
On top of all the other initiatives, at the end of the day we want to create a place where individuals feel supported and welcomed. We're working to develop more activities to support that connectedness.
"We look forward to creating a space that supports wellness! It's always been a personal mission of mine to make sure individuals feel welcomed, included, and listened to, so I'm thrilled to be a part of a team making that happen!"
Our Goal
To be the best diagnosticians in Hospital Medicine so that no patient is harmed by the wrong diagnosis at the University of Colorado.
Research has shown that nearly one in six patients who experience a rapid response, ICU escalation or death in the hospital may have experienced a diagnostic error. Our Division has been proven as a leader in understanding diagnosis through a number of efforts, including participating sites in the UPSIDE/ADEPT studies. We are now building a program to help transform diagnosis.
1. Build a sustainable system for case review that acts as a mechanism for detecting diagnostic opportunity areas.
2. Lead innovation in diagnostic improvement to support our institution's six pillars of quality.
3. Ask new questions about diagnosis in an effort to contribute to scientific scholarship at large.
4. Foster excellent diagnosticians at all levels of medical training.
We are working on building dedicated teams to help push forward our goals and aims. Below are the individuals involved in the process broken up into specific teams. We are proud to see so many individuals invested in diagnostic excellence and look forward ton seeing the impact it has on our patients daily lives!
